Cariboo Joint Planning Committee/CRD, at large, sees itself as having a mandate to continue on with the fundraising until the existing referendum expires Dec., 2013, but we all know that it can take four to five months to complete the borrowing process for $15 million with the municipal finance authority. The deadline to apply to borrow $15 million is long past due. I have searched for any positive comments from you and I don’t see any on any of those publications.” City Coun. Scott Elliott, who also noted DixonWarren’s Facebook activity, said he couldn’t disagree with the director more. “I’m not impartial. As a referee for 30 plus years and seeing the conditions of that rink – we need it,” he said, pointing to his mandate as an elected official. “The referendum passed, the people voted on it,” he
said. “It’s my job to continue to work towards that goal. But personally am I for it? Yes, I am.” Coun. John Brisco agreed, highlighting the 2008 referendum and his position. “In 2008 the referendum on the Multi-Centre passed,” he said. “As elected officials it is our job to be for the MultiCentre, not impartial. West Fraser is a proud supporter of the proposed North Cariboo Multi-Centre and their recent fundraising challenge shows their staff also support the project. “The Multi-Centre will provide services in the community to improve lifestyles here in Quesnel,” general manager D’Arcy Henderson said. “It’s amazing how this physical building can be the focal point in a community and it makes sense to include sports, arts and convention facilities all under one roof.” In May, the company challenged employees to purchase seats and offered incentive prizes which in turn supported Skyfest
2013. They created a competitive environment within the various divisions and Henderson said he was pleased to report the sawmill/planer division purchased the most seats at 96. Corporate group purchased 40 and the remaining divisions, Quesnel River Pulp, Cariboo Pulp and Paper and WestPine MDF purchased 49 seats, bringing the total of the challenge to 185 seats.
West Fraser offered to purchase seats on behalf of employees, with a convenient payment plan. “Most West Fraser employees look at this project as a benefit to their kids and what it will provide them,” Henderson said. “And we continue to encourage staff to come forward to purchase a seat.” He added with the plan to have purchasers names on the seat they fund, it creates pride of ownership
and they remain forever a visible part of the MultiCentre. In total, West Fraser employees contributed $46,250 to the Multi-Centre project coupled with WF matching donation, the total in seat sales is more than $92,000. “This is in addition to the initial $500,000 West Fraser gave to the Multi-Centre and they are also committed to matching community donations up to another

$500,000,” Henderson said. “However, this will translate to a total of $1.5 million.” Henderson said these employee seat purchases are just one example of West Fraser’s matching donation commitment. With more than 300 employees, Henderson said the Multi-Centre is also a morale issue for their staff. “They get excited to hear about new initiatives and opportunities for their children in the community.” He also said it’s an incentive in attracting people to not only the company but to the community as a whole. “It also affects our ability to retain people,” he said. “We continue to discuss ways to support the MultiCentre.”

Learning to deal with daylight savings Jenn Kelner, a Family Sleep Institute Certified Child Sleep Consultant and owner of BabyZzz, shares these five easy tricks to help your child adjust to the end of Daylight Savings Time. 1. Plan ahead You can prepare a few days ahead of time by moving your child’s entire daytime schedule ahead in 15 minute increments. At the beginning of November, start by offering breakfast 15 minutes later than normal, then naptime 15 minutes later and
so on until the entire daytime schedule has been shifted. If your child normally goes to bed at 7pm, they should be going to bed at 7:15pm. Do the same thing the next day but move their schedule ahead another 15 minutes. The gradual shift should help their internal clocks adjust, making it less likely that they will lose an hour of sleep on Sunday, and hopefully sleep in! 2. Keep their bedroom dark Make sure your child’s bedroom

Earlier bedtime to catch up If your child has lost some sleep due to the time change, plan for an earlier bedtime over the next few
days to catch up. Try not to worry if your children aren’t adjusting as well. Be patient and consistent and before you know it your children will be back on track. Are You an “Efficient” Investor? Generally speaking, if you’re efficient at a particular task, you’ll get good results without wasting effort. As you’ve already learned from your life experiences, it’s usually far better to be efficient at something than to be inefficient — and that’s certainly true with investing. So, what can you do to become a more efficient investor? Here are a few ideas:
Invest systematically
If you put a few dollars in an investment, such as a stock, that you heard was “hot,” and then a few months later put some more money in another vehicle that strikes your fancy, and you continue this pattern indefinitely, you may not be maximizing your resources. By taking this type of haphazard approach, you could end up owning a bunch of investments without rhyme or reason — a motley assortment that may not help you reach your goals. Instead of following this route, consider a systematic approach, sometimes known as dollar cost averaging. To do so, you’ll first want to identify some investments that are appropriate for your objectives, risk tolerance and time horizon. Then, automatically move the same amount of money each month from your chequing or savings account into the investments you’ve chosen. When the price of your investments falls, your contribution will buy more shares, and when the price rises, you’ll buy fewer shares — in other words, you’ll be fulfilling the “buy low” part of the classic investment formula. Over time, this technique should result in a lower average cost per investment. Keep in mind, though, that dollar cost averaging does not ensure a profit or protect against loss — and you’ll need to have the financial resources available to continue investing, even in “down” markets.
Reinvest dividends
Among your investments, you may own stocks that can pay dividends. You can take these dividends as cash, but if you don’t need the money to meet everyday expenses, you may be better off by reinvesting the dividends. This is an efficient way to increase your shares — and boosting your share ownership in quality investments can be a key way to help build wealth. (Be aware that companies can increase, decrease or discontinue dividends at any time.)
Look for tax-efficient techniques
Another type of efficiency associated with investing is tax efficiency, which refers to your ability to defer taxes as long as possible. Taxdeferred accounts, such as a TFSA can help you put off the tax bill until retirement, when you may be in a lower tax bracket.

Quesnel residents received a side of energy efficiency Thursday evening for the Candlelight Conservation Dinner. BC Hydro partnered with Quesnel Downtown Association to dim the lights at local restaurants for one evening (Oct. 24) to increase awareness about energy efficiency. Participating restaurants in Quesnel – Begbie’s Bar and Bistro and Billy Barker Restaurant – dimmed their lights and turned up the ambiance to show how simple actions can save energy. More than 77 restaurants participate in the initiative in 11 B.C. communities. Each participating restaurant extended an exclusive discount or special offer for the night. This year marks the fifth year for the annual Candlelight Conservation Dinner, which is hosted by BC Hydro each October to help celebrate Power Smart Month. Through Power Smart Month, BC Hydro increases awareness about the benefits and ease of using energy efficiently at a time when electricity consumption begins to increase for the winter. BC Hydro also provides other special Power Smart offers including increased rebates and incentives for the purchase of energy efficient products.

Option 2 is an expansion to transit service and includes a new Express Route 4: South Quesnel, which will run directly between downtown Quesnel and the South Quesnel shopping area along the highway with 3 trips on weekdays and 2 express trips on Saturdays. In addition, there will be minor route changes and a later trip on both Route 1: West Quesnel and Route 3: North Fraser. There will also be some schedule changes to Route 2: Red Bluff. These changes will be implemented on Nov. 18. Oct. 9 BC Transit launched an arrival event at the Quesnel and District Arts and Recreation Centre. BC Transit
President and CEO Manuel Achadinha and Senior Regional Transit Manager Todd Dupuis joined myself and my colleagues together with staff and media to welcome the Grade 4 and 5 students of Carson elementary school, who were bused to the centre for the celebration. These students had been asked to draw a picture of how they saw future transit in Quesnel. Their pictures were displayed and prizes were given to the top three most innovative drawings. The students enjoyed snacks and a “transit” cake and had a great time. A new Rider’s Guide will be available to the public in early November at City Hall and aboard the bus so be sure to pick up a copy. It will also be available onlinewww.busonline. ca/regions/que/. he Vicinity buses have arrived and were put into service on Monday, Oct. 21. These buses seat 23 people and can accommodate 16 standees. The first ten seats fold up and securely support strollers, walkers, wheelchairs and scooters. The Vicinity is a low floor, front ramp design and has a ten inch kneeling capacity making it much more accessible for customers with mobility challenges. Now, together with the existing Arboc bus, we are proud to say that Quesnel has a fully accessible conventional transit system! The process began in September 2012 when we engaged the community for input into the Quesnel Transit Service and the Service Review conducted by BC Transit. In partnership with the City of Quesnel and Five Five Transport, BC Transit connected with many of our stakeholder groups including the Cariboo Regional District, Quesnel Downtown Association, area business associations, School District, College of New Caledonia, bike and accessibility groups, seniors, and neighbourhood associations to get their feedback on the existing transit service and their desires for future changes. Public consultation took place over several months with these and other stakeholder groups. BC Transit used this information to finalize the Transit Service Review and presented service change options to City Council at our July 15 regular Council meeting. fter funding an extensive report on sexual exploitation in Newfoundland and Labrador, the province is locking up its contents, citing public safety concerns. CBC Investigates in Newfoundland and Labrador asked for a copy of the 2011 report, called, It’s Nobody’s Mandate and Everyone’s Responsibility: Sexual Exploitation and the Sex Trade in Newfoundland and Labrador but were denied as it was “harmful to individual or public safety.” However CBC later obtained a copy. The report recommends a number of governmental action steps, including: • Emergency housing for those in the sex trade. • Help for those in the sex trade, such as drop-in centres and a street nurse program. • One single agency. • Laws for anonymous testing for sexually transmitted diseases. • Emergency housing for those trying to leave the sex trade. Sounds legit, right? So why would the province fund such a report, only to deem its contents too sensitive? Then continue on to cite “safety concerns”? What could be more dangerous than to ignore the contents of this report? To quash its contents and ignore the recommendations is to only perpetuate the situation. It simply works to tell those who shared their experiences, their knowledge and expertise that they’re not ready to listen or take action. It’s a slap in the face of researchers and interviewees. But government could still redeem itself by releasing the report and tackling the recommendations. It’s time to do the right thing. –Autumn MacDonald, Observer

s kids, we dressed up for Halloween with whatever we could find from around the house. We’d raid the closets, drawers and even the attic to gather materials to transform us into gypsies, witches, cowboys and ghosts. Never did it occur to my little brother and me to ask our parents for costumes from a store. If people were buying them back then, Jeremie and I had no idea, and none of our friends seemed to know that either. We were all doit-yourselfers and we had a blast. Things seemed so much simpler and it was a far less profitable industry than it is today. Halloween has become the second-most commercially successful day of the year – after Christmas - expected to reach 6.9 billion dollars this year in the U.S. alone. What’s caused such a huge spike in sales? People like me are part of the reason.

On A Brighter Note After many great years of celebrating Oct. 31, trick or treating in my homemade outfits as a child, I decided to complicate things when I got older. I started engaging in the buying of décor and creating unique costumes on my own with the money I earned myself. It became an artistic expression. And although I wasn’t out buying a costume off the rack exactly, I was still spending a bunch of money and time creating an awesome outfit I’d only ever wear once. As the years went by and I got more and more interested in dressing up, I noticed I wasn’t alone. Tons of people were doing what
that idea from and I know it might end up being more work than just picking up something ready made, but I’m excited. Maybe because it brings back memories from my own childhood. It also brings back memories of their younger years. When they were three and six and sad because I didn’t have a costume, they decided to dress me up. They instructed me to sit on a stool as they gleefully ran circles around me with a roll of toilet paper each and made me into a “mummy mommy.” It was the funniest thing in the world to them and we all ended up laughing so hard we were crying. Out of all the awesome costumes I’ve loved wearing over the years, the “mummy mommy” remains my favourite. And the price wasn’t scary at all. Lori Welbourne is a syndicated columnist. I was doing and at parties people were going all out with their creations, trying to outdo what they’d done the year before. I participated in this activity for more than a decade and it was a lot of fun. But once I became a mother to our second child, I stopped putting pressure on myself to dress up and just made it about the kids. It’s all I could handle, or it’s all I wanted to handle. And I was grateful for the vast selection of affordable kid costumes so readily available in the stores. It was much easier to just select something off a hanger instead of having to hunt and peck around the house and create something unique. And it was far preferable to sewing on outfit from scratch, which I’d done so many times in the past. But now that my children are 10 and 13, they suddenly want to create their own simple costumes out of stuff we already have. I’m not sure where they got

Allow newer visions Make it bigger Editor: What a colossal waste of taxpayers’ money and everyone’s time. The MultiCentre information meetings, held over the last couple of weeks are nothing short of a snore session. The Joint Planning Committee along with the fundraising co-ordinator and a few clingers are desperate to keep the cash flowing into their own coffers, as they are the only ones who are directly benefitting from this dog and pony show. Yes, they are all paid handsomely for turning out to promote the smoke and mirrors, along with the ongoing dissemination of confusing and erroneous information. Despite the variety of questions that have been challenging the YES group to honesty and

integrity, there has not been one change or clarification of misleading statements in the handouts or verbal presentation. No wonder we no longer trust our politicians. They are dictating to us – they are attempting to control us through “civility” and not allowing people to express their opinions – all the while, they continue to lie directly to us and reiterate the same answers ad nauseum to utilize all available time and bore the audience into numbness. Well, so far I think they’ve failed. People are already entrenched in the NO position thanks to the tactics used by the Multi-Centre group. There are rarely more than 24 people at these meetings and new faces are rare despite the number of venues.
No one is listening to the politicians any longer. Those who are disgusted with these manipulations are working hard to educate the more apathetic voter and it behooves us all to understand the facts before we got to the polls. If you don’t understand the piles of numbers and words, just realize that property owners will be on the hook for an average of $200 more in taxes per year for the Multi-Centre and in my case the total recreation tax will total close to $600 per year for 20 years for this over costly project! VOTE NO and allow newer visions and ideas to percolate, that would cost a whole lot less money for all of us. Sharron Hill Quesnel
Editor: I am not against the multiplex. But I am against what the multiplex has to offer. Lets get down to basics. Multiplex is offering an NHLsized area with seating for 1,600 people. Ho! Ho! Ho! Here we go. I am sure that 90 per cent of Quesnel residents have not been inside an NHL ice size arena. So goes for the voters too. But I am sure we could ram 1,400 people in our old arena that they are turning down. I wonder who the idiot was that drew up the plan for our complex and also the persons who accepted such crap. The new arena should offer nothing less than 14,000 seats. Future! Future! Quesnel had rodeos, Billy Barker Days, fall fairs, etc.. Have you ever been to rodeo and seen the slop they have to perform in. All could be held in our new arena. Also you could have
entertainment held here as well. Prince George has many sell outs. Number one we do have a junior hockey team and number 2, on hearing now, will not put a team with under 3,200 seat capacity. Don’t forget senior hockey – Quesnel Kangaroos. I’ll bet dollars to donuts in 25 to 30 years Quesnel will have doubled and tripled its size. Do you know the cost of adding seats at a later date? Have I done my homework? You bet I have. I contacted six to eight cities and towns in Ontario and Quebec with NHL ice size arenas and guess what the smallest place, population 7,200 built? Nothing less than 14,000 seats and others 16,000 seats. I mention about our complex with 1,600 seat capacity and they laughed and said what idiocy. I agreed. Wilf O’Brian Quesnel

Kimberly Rutledge to take centre stage at youth seminar

imberly Rutledge picked out what she planned to wear more than a month ago and her speech has been ready for months. She is honoured and excited to be one of 12 speakers at the TedxKids@BC conference in Vancouver Saturday. Speaking in public, performing on stage, throwing her considerable energy into a worthy cause and providing leadership to others is nothing knew to this 17-year-old, but TedxKids@BC is something extra special for Kimberly. As a Breakfast Clubs of Canada volunteer, Kimberly has shone. After attending a leadership camp for BCC in 2011, she was recognized for her speaking and leadership abilities and her name was put forward as a potential speaker for this prestigious motivational conference which targets youth. Kimberly wasn’t intimidated by the prospect of speaking to a packed crowd in the Science World auditorium; she was excited to be able to reach so many kids with her message of embracing differences. She set to the task of preparing the required video submission about why she should be chosen as one of the speakers. After being selected for an in-person interview in the Lower Mainland, Kimberly faced the most challenging segment of the process, presenting herself to the professional conference organizers. “This was the make or break point in the interview process,” she said. However, once she began speaking, Kimberly shed any reservations. Speaking passionately about her inspiration, she explained how her sister Kassidy, who has Downs Syndrome, showed her how important it was to accept differences in the world. “I feel one of the most critical changes that needs to
happen is deeper acceptance of differences in people,” she said. “It’s about changing our perception of what’s normal. I talk a lot about labelling.” She admitted she got a lot more comfortable as the interview progressed. “I could feel they were buying what I was selling,” she said with a grin. Kimberly’s fondest wish however is to reach the students in the audience on Saturday. After attending Bolton Academy of Spoken Arts to polish her presentation, Kimberly is confident she can deliver her message in a meaningful way. “I want to talk to the audience not just speak at them,” she said. Along with her power point presentation and the question period after her talk, Kimberly plans to ask them about their own experiences.

“I want to ask questions like ‘have you ever felt you didn’t fit in?’.” The audience is also a select group who apply to attend the event. During the one-day conference, there are 12 speakers, 3 performances and four workshops which Kimberly is looking forward to attending. “I also want to hear the other speakers, some are students but some are also professionals,” she said. “I look forward to hearing what they have to say. It’s nice to see so many other young people eager to change the world.” Through all her preparations, Kimberly hasn’t delivered her speech to her parents. She did, however, consult Kassidy about what she should wear. “Kassidy always says I’m beautiful but I still value her opinion.” As for her parents, “they want to be surprised.” Kimberly is graduating from Correlieu senior secondary school this year and, although she is incredibly excited about the TedxKids@BC opportunity, she hasn’t much time to rest on her success: Monday she’s back helping with the Bouchie Lake breakfast program; she’ll be in rehearsal for the grad fashion show; and continues with her education, preparing for her acceptance into the UBC Okanagan science program. “I want to go into medicine, paediatrics to be specific,” she said. “I want to work helping people; I can’t wait till I’m able to save my first life.” Kimberly said she hopes to see at least one person connect with what she has to say at tedxkids and apply it to their life. Elmer George Yager

May 20, 1929 ~ September 23, 2013 Elmer, the fourth of ten children was born on May 20, 1929 near Bruno, Saskatchewan, passed away September 23, 2013. In 1930 the Yager family moved to Makwa, Saskatchewan where Elmer and his siblings grew up helping on the farm and going to school. In 1948 Elmer left home to work on a farm in Vegerville, Alberta. In the fall of 1949 he went to Rutland, B.C. where he had a job working in the bush. Elmer moved to Quesnel in 1952 working for the Department of Highways. In 1969 he left Moose Heights and moved to Hines Creek, Alberta where he farmed and did trapping while working at
an auction barn in Fairview. In 1988 Elmer retired back to Quesnel where he enjoyed fishing with his brothers, having garage sales, playing cards and bingo. Elmer was a block parent in his neighbourhood. He also helped sell raffle tickets for the Knights of Columbus and enjoyed participating in Relay for Life. Elmer was predeceased by his father Frank, mother Mary, brothers; Clarence, Germon, Eugene, Vincent, sisters; Irene Kopetski, Estalene Theisen, Evelyn Morgenstern and Annabelle Rawling. He is survived by his sister Coletta Telford, brothers in-law; Joe Kopetski, Joseph Theisen, Allen Morgenstern, Dale
Telford, Lynn Rawling, sisters in-law; Berna Yager, Ann Yager and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Elmer is sadly missed by all his friends and relatives and leaves us with many wonderful memories to be cherished forever. A special Thank you to Elmer’s friends and the staff at Dunrovin for their love and care of Elmer ~Elmer’s family

s Remembrance Day and Veterans’ Week approaches, Quesnel Museum is encouraging people to research and record their family’s military history. No, this is not to glorify war – no remembrance is intended for that purpose. The purpose of such an undertaking is for this community to make a concerted effort to keep a record of what was contributed towards peace by those in the military by family members. The intent is to encourage you to research ( if necessary) and/or record any member of your family, immediate or extended, who may have been in the military and submit it to the museum. Yes, the Department of National Defence has the pertinent information but not the “rest of the story.” It matters not that your family did or did not come from Quesnel – they are still part
PAST TIME of the mosaic that constitutes Canada. We are interested in the background of these young people who contributed so much to our country’s wellbeing. Whether your relative was in the First World War; the Second World War; Korea; Bosnia; Serbia; NATO; Afghanistan; Iraq; or on a peace-keeping mission, it is important that their story be preserved. Submissions are asked to follow basic guidelines. Submissions should be
handed in to the museum by Nov. 1. Submissions will be put on display for Veterans’ Week and Remembrance Day. Submissions will be digitally photographed and these photographs kept at the Museum for historical reference. Submissions must be picked up by Nov. 15. Enough about the rules. This is not a contest. There is no prize. However, there is a reward. The reward is the satisfaction gained from compiling and preserving some family history. Hope to see you as you ‘pass time’ at the Museum. Youth-led food drive slated This Halloween, organized groups of costumed youth will go door-to-door in the Quesnel area to collect donations of nonperishable food items instead of candy. Trick or Eat is Canada’s largest youth-led food drive. This year, by engaging 8,000 youth, Meal Exchange aims to collect $500,000 worth of food to support 100 local food banks and $50,000 in online donations. One-hundred per cent of the food collected will be donated to the Salvation Army food bank. There is also an online donation option for those who are not able to donate food to Trick or Eaters. For every $1 donated online, Meal Exchange is able to provide 1 meal through a local food bank. WHEN: Thursday, October 31st, 2013 – Trick or Eating will begin at 5:30PM WHERE: All Trick or Eaters will be meeting at CNC and then going out in groups to the Johnston/Carson and South Hills neighbourhoods. Depending on volunteer turn out more neighbourhoods will canvassed as well. Meal Exchange is a national youth-driven, registered charity that engages, educates and mobilizes youth to work with their communities to alleviate hunger locally, achieve food security, and develop solutions that attain just and sustainable food systems. Clare was born June 8, 1925 in New Westminster. Passed away in Quesnel on October 19, 2013. Predeceased by his son Wayne, sisters; Emily, Madilene, Annie and brother David. Survived by his wife Eleanor, son Jay, daughter Donna, grandchildren; Michael, Colin, Shawn, Jodi, Danielle, great grandchildren; Hailey, Owen, brothers Jim, John, Harry, sisters; June Grinde and Rosie Buff. He was raised in Pitt Meadow on the family dairy farm which is still in the family. Clare served in World War II, Saska Light Infantry. Then in business 1948-1958, Atom Delivery in Vancouver. He moved to Quesnel 1958 and bought a farm on Johnson Road, Dragon Lake area. Worked for West Fraser Mills for 23½ years, retiring in 1988. He will be deeply missed by all family and friends.

Going the distance JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter Quesnel schools ran a successful weekend at the zone championships in Vanderhoof. Both QJS and Correlieu runners were competing for the chance to head to the crosscountry championships in Langley next month. Both Correlieu coach Pat Marsh and QJS coach Scott Trueman were happy with their runner’s performances, with Trueman noting his team’s growth. “Overall, the QJS team improved considerably from the beginning of the season, with several athletes improving their times by two to three minutes compared with the same course just over a month ago,” he said. Olivia Baptiste, a grade nine student from QJS beat grade 10, 11 and 12 girls to finish first overall in the girls

category. The top 20 runners from both the girls and boys categories earned the chance to continue to provincials. The top 20 girls included Avery Drew, a gr. 8 student at QJS, in fifth, Baylee McGillivray, a gr. 10 Correlieu student, in 11th, Correlieu gr. 10 student Kyra Teetzen in 12th and Mia Kozak, a gr. 10 student at Correlieu, in 16th. In the boys category, Cole Dinsdale, a gr. 10 Correlieu student, found himself on the podium, taking third overall. Konrad Teetzen, a gr. 12 Correlieu student, finished in seventh, followed by gr. 9 QJS student Dane Jacobsen. Dylan Cathcart, a gr. 10 student at Correlieu, took 17th, with Brodie Lamarche, a gr. 12 Correlieu student, on his heels in 18th. The Correlieu boys team, Teetzen, Dinsdale, Cathcart, Lamarche and Jon Richardson, took second in the tournament,
allowing them to go to provincials as a team. They will be joined by McGillivray, Kyra Teetzen, ad Mia Kozak also from Correlieu and Baptiste, Drew and Jacobsen from QJS BC School Sports has sanctioned the first ever junior cross-country provincials this year, also in Langley on November second. Trueman has chosen to enter a team of his runners into the junior race as well. The QJS’s girls team, consisting of Olivia Baptiste, Avery Drew, Cassidy Giesbrecht, and Lyra Jonasson. Giesbrecht was fourth in her bantam division and Jonasson fifth. Boys, Liam Matzner, who finished fifth in juvenile, and Ryan Elden will be down at the same time to compete in the XC Junior Provincial Championships. Runners are now back in training for provincials.
Gold Pan City’s fall of Football Quesnel Minor Football League The Quesnel Blue Bombers had a hard time of it last weekend, with both the atom and pee wee teams being shut out on the score board. The fourth-ranked atom Blue Bombers squared off against the very tough, first-ranked Prince George white team, losing 18-0. The white team will continue on to finals this weekend.
The third-ranked pee wee Blue Bombers has an equally hard game, lining up against the secondranked Vanderhoof Vikings, losing 31-0. The Vikings will continue on to finals against the first-ranked Prince George Axeman this Saturday.
Correlieu Clan The Clansmen will host yet another home game this
year, the second time they’ve been able to play in front of a home crowd this year. The Clansmen will host the visiting Pemberton Grizzlies this Sunday at noon. The Clansmen are usually forced to play in Prince George and as such rarely get to experience a game with a crowd of supporters there to cheer them on. They hope to have a sizeable crowd on hand to make the rare experience memorable.

Local soccer master For 34 years Tammy McClelland has had a passion for playing soccer. With her years of experience and skill she became a team member of the ladies soccer team that played at the World Masters Games in Turin, Italy, Aug. 2 – 11, 2013. The team had a roster of 14 ladies, 10 from Victoria, two from Penticton, one from Nova Scotia and Quesnel's own, McClelland. Since the team originated as the Victoria Gorge Soccer Club, they chose the name Gorge-ous Masters for this world sporting event that had 18,000 registered participants in 28 different sports. The ladies played seven games in nine days, two of which went
to penalty kicks, leading to an exhilarating bronze medal win. This is the fourth World Masters Games for McClelland. Melbourne, Australia in '02, Edmonton Alberta in '05 and Sydney Australia in '09. As the World Masters Games run on the same type 4 year cycle as the Olympics, McClelland will be playing in Auckland, New Zealand in 2017. Her belief is there is never an age limit to sports – start young and keep going. As well as the World Masters Games, McClelland has been invited to play on the Selects Team in Hawaii in 2015 in a Masters Tournament. Congratulations on the bronze, McClelland.

JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter The Quesnel River Archery Club started lessons in their new space last weekend. Previously, the club operated out of Barlow Creek Receration Centre, but found they had outgrown their digs. "We can't thank Barlow Creek enough for having us in there all those years, they've done some great improvements to the place, but, in order for us to grow, we need a bigger facility," Wayne Schaefer, a member of the club's executive, said. The club has taken the area across from the barber in Maple Park Mall, which gives the room an outdoor entrance. The new space allowed the club to expand from the six targets it had set up at Barlow Creek to the 11 they have set up now. The move also puts them in a more convenient spot. Where as Barlow Creek is out of town and outside of daily traffic, the new spot puts the club in a high traffic zone. "It makes it better for us and for the archers themselves," he said. The hope is to soon have some signage out front to advertise their presence. The extra space has been a boon for the club as it enters one of its biggest junior olympic program (JOP) ever with 47 archers participating. For 24 of those archers it is their first time at the club. Currently, the club is running two JOP classes, Tuesday, 6 p.m. until finished and Saturday 9 a.m. until finished. But the club is considering splitting the Tuesday class in order to make more space for the archers. Pictures on page A19.

BMW i3 electric car launch in Amsterdam LEIPZIG, Germany: BMW believes there is a big future for wind power in its cars. No, not for the propulsion of the prestige brand’s models but the making of their sleek machines of the future. Long before visitors arrive at the auto manufacturer’s new hi-tech factory in this economically depressed region of what was once communist East Germany, they greeted with a wave from four giant wind turbines. Those metal giants power the production of the impressive five-seater
BMW i3, test driven today in Driveway. The i3 models now roll silently off the production line; silently, not just because it’s an all-electric vehicle but also because the entire manufacturing process rarely rises above a whisper. The BMW i3 is the first of the manufacturer’s projects for which the environmental sustainability objectives were determinedly set at the same high standards as the economic goals applied to the manufacturing process. Next year, it will be joined
by the i8, which looks every inch a super-sports car. To achieve those lofty dual goals, the BMW Group retains close control over the complete production process from the carbon fibre production, which starts in a hydroelectric powered plant in Moses Lake, Wa. Entire noisy and stinky processes associated with manufacturing in steel are gone. Robots screw and bond the important parts together and send the shells on their way, suspended form an overhead rail. Happy workers can
actually hear each other chat down on the factory floor, bathed in sunlight and breathing freely courtesy of an efficient hi-tech ventilation system. Amazingly, the energy used is 50 percent of that required to turn out a conventional car and 70 percent less water is used. My group roamed around looking for waste, which turned out to be a waste (of time) in itself. The bits and bats and ‘wasted’ trim are gathered up and recycled for use elsewhere along the production line. BMW even boasts the lithium ion batteries that will

power each car’s motor will outlive the individual car’s life. They can be used as storage batteries
when the car is put out to pasture, sorry, recycled. If one of the eight modules should fail then a replacement easily drops in rather than there be a need for an entire battery replacement. The lightweight body is also designed with a view to quick and economical repair in the event of a collision. Body parts again drop into place with the minimum of fuss and cost. They say the cost of a fix will likely mirror that of putting a BMW 1-series back on the road after a similar crash.
As drivers, please slow down next week and be extra vigilant, especially around residential areas. Children are always caught up in the excitement of Halloween and can easily forget the rules of the road.

Mazda, on a global scale, is a small company, so developing new products is a major undertaking. This is why they shared engineering with the Ford Motor Company for many years but that relationship dissolved in 2010. Instead of modifying existing, co-developed vehicles platforms, engines and transmission, the company took a radical turn in the way they develop new products. I’m sure by now you have seen Mazda’s ads for “Skyactiv Technology”. This is the name for their radical design and manufacturing approach. By engineering vehicles from a blank sheet of paper, Mazda could focus on simplifying the manufacturing process to save money, a crucial part of this small companies survival. This new 2014 Mazda3 is the third vehicle to be built using Mazda’s Skyactiv Technology, behind the Mazda CX-5 SUV and Mazda6 sedan.
The platform used to build this all new Mazda3 is a shared chassis with the other two Skyactiv products. They elongate, widen or shorten the platform to suit each vehicle. In this case, it is slightly shorter then the CX-5. In fact, the new Mazda3 is lower, wider and slightly shorter than the last model but the wheelbase has been stretched by 60mm. This pushes the wheels out to the corner of the car, providing a solid stance and improving interior space. Then Mazda went about hand forming the body to produce a style that conveys motion, even standing still. Sold as a sedan or hatchback, the long hood, sweep-
ing lines and powerful stance make a statement in a class that can be rather subdued. Inside The goal for this latest model was to have a dynamic looking interior, fitted with materials and features not typically found in a compact car. The dashboard is covered with, not only a soft material, rather a plush-feeling dash. Then there is the dash-mounted communication screen placed in the centre of the dash. This is standard on the middle GS and upper GT trim; the base GX is not so lucky. The driver can touch the screen to access music, navigation and phone settings but once the car is in motion
the screen is only adjustable through a rotary dial controller between the front seats. Mazda places three, easy-to-memories, buttons above the dial for access to the most common functions. On the top GT model there is even a heads-up display that sits right on top of the driver’s instrument cluster, helping to keep the information high enough that it focuses the driver’ s attention on the road. The seats are comfortable and can be fitted with leather on the top model. Even though Mazda lengthened the wheelbase by 60mm, the back seat isn’t long on legroom. transmission at the same time, the Mazda engineers were able to shed weight. The lighter platform and powerful 2.0L 4-cylinder with 155hp is a nice match on the base and GS trim levels, driving either a 6-speed manual or all-new 6-speed automatic. The top GT is equipped with a 2.5L engine with 184hp but is only available with the automatic. I’m surprised that the manual is not offered with this engine, as driving enthusiast will be attracted to this engine right away. On the road, the steering is very quick and the feedback well above average. The previous Mazda3 was at the top of the class in terms of driving dynamics and this new model takes it to a
whole new level. I’m confident in saying that this new model feels like a much more expensive car. Verdict The standard features list is strong, including keyless entry, push button start, Bluetooth and USB connectivity for $15,995. If you equip the base model with air conditioning and automatic transmission, the price jumps to $18,795. The middle GS trim is the place most Canadians will shop and the range is from $19,695-$22,595 for things like heated seats, leather steering wheel, rain sensing wipers and more. The top GT with the larger engine, 18-inch wheels, xenon headlamps, Bose stereo and navigation, ranges

from $25,855-$$29,855. As you can see, the price can ratchet up rather quickly. The upside is that this is a car that can provide solid, fun to drive transportation, wrapped in a stylish package. Higher-end models feel like a much more expensive car, with qualities not found previously in this class of car. So, the price might be justified. Amy Lawson, 35, leads an active life. She likes to be outdoors, to play sports, surf, bake and has a thriving social life. Professionally, she was recently promoted to be the Territory Manager for Drydock Footwear Group. Her territory covers British Columbia and Alberta. Being on the road is a sizeable component of her work. When it came time to trade in her Nissan Xtrail – which she loved to pieces – she was torn when deciding what vehicle to purchase. “The Xtrail has been a fabulous car, but I’ve outgrown it and need something that can better accommodate all my equipment,” she says. In the process, she considered SUVs, hatchbacks and crossovers. The Ford Flex, Ford Escape, Honda Pilot, Mitsubishi Outlander were on her list to look at. Amy states, “When I started to research vehicles, the No. 1 thing on my priority list was interior space. I needed lots of it.” She continues, “I didn’t mind if the vehicle wasn’t sexy! I need functional. Good looks were secondary to me.” Because of her current role, it requires travelling around the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, BC and Alberta with various promotional gear, display units, sample products and more. Not to mention, if she can pack in her sports

equipment like her bicycle, snowboard or surfboard in, too, that would be even better. Price was also a factor for her. “I had a budget to work with, and I needed my payments to be around $500 a month,” Amy mentions. “And since I’d be spending a fair amount of time behind the wheel, I’d need something that was comfortable, too.” When chatting about potential matches, the idea of a minivan came up. I saw the excitement in her eyes. In her personal life, she is not the typical minivan candidate. With no children to drive to hockey or soccer practice, some people might question her enthusiasm. But to her, it seemed like the perfect fit. “I was just so excited about it. Minivans make life so much easier and you can just do so much with them,” she explains. “It made a lot more sense than a pickup and much more sense than an SUV.” A few minivans/minivan-esque vehicles she looked into
were the Honda Odyssey, Toyota Sienna and Mazda5. Though the Honda and Toyota appealed to her, it was the Dodge Grand Caravan that had exactly what she was looking for. It was in her price range and had some handy features that would allow easy loading and unloading of her gear. She even really likes its look. Amy tells me, “I can fit two mountain bikes inside with people and still have room for more.” The Dodge Grand Caravan that she selected is the Crewe trim, which also came with some extras. She has a towing package, a rear DVD entertainment system (perfect for passing time on ferry rides!), Stow ‘n Go seats, remote keyless entry to the doors and liftgate and more. While she can’t be happier with her purchase, the signing on the dotted line did make her heart beat quite a bit faster. “There’s a lot of anxiety to buying a car. It’s a big purchase and you want to make sure you make the best choice you can.”
And speaking of choices, the biggest question when selecting her chariot of choice? “Should I get the white one or the black one?!” she jokingly asked. She went with black. When looking back on the experience and looking at her Grand Caravan, she happily says, “What I didn’t think would be very sexy vehicle ended up being the sexiest to me. It can be very difficult, if not impossible, to tell if tires are under-inflated just by looking at them. Yet most drivers don’t check tire pressure regularly. Proper tire pressure saves money, fuel consumption, helps the environment – and saves lives. Having TPMS on vehicles helps to keep Canada’s roads safe by giving drivers the critical warning they need when one or more of their tires has low air pressure. Facts on Maintaining Proper Tire Pressure: Saving lives – vehicle safety and performance Under-inflation is the leading cause of tire failure2. Even if your tires look fine, they could be underinflated by as much as 20 per cent1. According to a recent study, about 50 per cent of the vehicles on the road in Canada have at least one tire that is either over or underinflated by more than 10 per cent. In fact, 10 per cent of all vehicles surveyed had at least one tire underinflated by 20 per cent1. When your tires don’t have the right amount of air, the sides flex, bend and build heat. Underinflated tires compromise your vehicle’s steering, braking and cornering abilities. Operating a vehicle with just one tire underinflated by 8 PSI can reduce the life of the tire by 15,000 km1. Saving fuel and the environment Annually, 643 million litres of extra fuel are consumed by Canadian vehicles because of improper tire maintenance practices. As a result, over one million tonnes of carbon dioxide are unnecessarily released
into the environment4. Canadians dispose of 29 million used tires every year, which has a significant impact on landfills. Even modest improvements in extending tire life could have a significant positive impact on our environment as energy used to produce new tires emits harmful pollutants into the atmosphere4. Saving money Fuel consumption increases by 1 per cent for every 5 per cent of under-inflation. Operating a vehicle with just one tire under-inflated by 8 PSI can reduce the life of the tire by 15,000 km and can increase the vehicle’s fuel consumption by 4 per cent4. Example: • If fuel costs $1.32/litre and it takes approximately 9.1 litres per 100 km = $12.01 / 100 km. • Increasing fuel consumption by 4 per cent = $12.47/100 km • If you average 22,000 km / year, you would save $100 annually ($2642 vs. $2743) by keeping proper tire pressure Maintaining proper tire pressure could save you approximately two weeks of fuel a year, enough to pay for one full set of tires over the average 9-year life of a vehicle5. Under-inflation also reduces tire life. Driving with tires that are under-inflated by 8 PSI will increase tire wear by 16% (approximately 15,000 km). This will hit your pocketbook as you will have to replace tires sooner than you would if they were properly maintained.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System TPMS will trigger the dashboard symbol to illuminate when one or more tires are under-inflated by 25 per cent. TPMS improves your vehicle’s handling and stability, decreasing your chances of catastrophic tire failure and having an accident. While not currently mandated, an estimated 70 per cent of new vehicles (model year 2007+) sold in Canada are TPMS-equipped3. Starting in 2007, TPMS became a legislated feature on all passenger vehicles sold in the U.S. Tips for Drivers: Get in the habit of manually checking your tire pressure at least once a month or before a long road trip. Even if your vehicle has TPMS installed, regular tire maintenance is the best way to increase your safety. The best way to get the most accurate reading is to check your tire pressure before you drive, when the tire is cold. To determine if your vehicle has TPMS, look for the TPMS symbol on the dashboard when you first turn your key to the on position. Consult your owner’s manual for more information. (ADD DASHBOARD VISUAL HERE) When installing winter tires or buying new wheels, be sure to have TPMS sensors installed in the wheels. Failure to do this will make your TPMS inoperative. Large temperature drops, usually during winter, can cause the low tire pressure warning to come on. Have a tire service centre properly check your tire pressure and TPMS if this happens. TPMS batteries, expected to last between five and seven years (or approximately 140,000 – 160,000km/year), are encased and can’t be replaced. Since some of the first TPMS-equipped vehicles have now been on the road for more than five years, drivers will soon need to see TPMS specialists for maintenance. Once the battery dies, a new TPMS sensor must be installed. When the TPMS illuminates on your dashboard, it means one or more of your tires may be at least 25 per cent below recommended inflation pressure. Pull over and check your tire pressure. This three-bedroom family home, designed for a lot that slopes to the back, includes an unfinished basement that could serve as extra room for a growing family, an in-law suite or a mortgage helper. Entry is through a covered porch with double pilasters at one side, together with a veranda that would be perfect for a lounger or a pair of rocking chairs. The foyer includes a coat closet and a half wall to the right that allows a view into the great room, which enjoys a view to the front veranda and garden.
