Businesses ponder voting scheme By Martha Wickett

MARKET NEWS STAff

Should businesses have two votes? The Salmon Arm Chamber of Commerce kicked this question around briefly at its Oct. 16 meeting, following up on the B.C. Chamber’s push for a business vote in the province. The BC Chamber states that, under the Community Charter in B.C., municipalities have significantly more power today than in the past,

but don’t have the same degree of accountability. “When this is combined with the fact that in B.C., business owners and operators do not have any voting rights in municipal elections, we have seen the development of significant inequities between business and residential property tax rates,” states the advocacy page on its website. Local chamber president Jim Kimmerly said he doesn’t necessarily think businesses should get two votes, but noted that Salmon Arm

does have a lot of businesses with owners who don’t live in town. Chamber member Stu Bradford said business owners should be able to have that one vote. Cookie Langenfeld of Downtown Salmon Arm said she agrees with businesses having a vote. “I think that’s the only way it needs to be. If you already have a vote, you don’t need a second,” she said, noting that she lives two driveways out of city limits but doesn’t have a municipal vote. City Coun. Chad Eliason pointed

out that the recent Union of BC Municipalities’ convention turned down the proposal for a business vote. The thinking was, he said, that if a business owner is passionate about an issue and has influence over their employees, they could potentially gain an additional 30 to 100 votes. On the other hand, he said, people who were in favour of a business vote noted that they do lots of business but don’t have a say regarding municipal issues or politicians.

CSRD votes to rezone Camp Grafton

By Tracy Hughes

MARKET NEWS STAff

While a majority of Columbia Shuswap Regional District directors initially expressed doubt, in the end, a vote to allow the rezoning of two residential lots at Camp Grafton in Magna Bay passed by a 4-1 margin. The Kamloops United Church owns Camp Grafton, with a non-profit society running seasonal camp programs for youth. The church was seeking the rezoning of the two waterfront lots to help pay for an affordable housing project in Kamloops. The camp is 18 hectares and the two lots to be carved off are one and two hectares in size. A number of the CSRD directors were concerned with the prospect of the camp being eventually dismantled, as the property was sold off piece by piece. The parks commission for the area, recommended against allowing the rezoning, as did the Little Shuswap Indian Band, who expressed concern over possible archeological values at the site. Directors wondered about the possibility of requiring a restrictive covenant on

the remainder of the property to ensure it could not be further subdivided, however, legally there was no mechanism to force the church to those terms. The church did not agree to voluntarily place restrictions on the property title, saying they could not commit future congregations to such limitations. Directors had also heard complaints from area residents regarding the intention of Dr. Hartley Grafton, for whom the camp is named. While some believed Grafton to have donated the property to the church with an express purpose that it be for a youth camp, Jennifer Keim, from the church’s development committee, was allowed to address the board and explained this was not the case. In the mid-1950s, Grafton made a donation of $2,000 to the church, which the church then used to purchase the camp land. “It was a natural tie in because Dr. Grafton was involved with the church and the Scouts, that there was a belief that both could benefit from the camp… But no one has every provided anything, a letter or other documents that he al-

ways wanted it to be a camp,” said Keim. It was pointed out that the church was under no obligation to keep the camp, and could apply to the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure for a 17-lot subdivision on prime waterfront and then each new owner come to the CSRD for rezoning. The church could also sell the property outright. “Staff is thinking that could be much more controversial,” said Charles Hamilton, chief administrative officer. “This proposal calls for the retention of a sizeable portion of the land for the camp.” Keim told the board they have a close relationship with the society that runs the camp and that the sale of the remainder of the property is not being contemplated. Keim’s information appeared to sway a number of directors, including Rhona Martin, who called it “the lesser of evils.” Rene Talbot, Area D director remained the lone dissenting voice, saying he was opposed without some additional guarantee of protection for the camp lands, since he felt the donor’s intention was to ensure the land remained for the camp in perpetuity.

Anglemont water upgrade under budget By Tracy Hughes

MArKet neWS StAff

Competitive pricing in a struggling economic climate is proving to be a benefit to the taxpayers, as costs to upgrade the water system in Anglemont are well below budget. Columbia Shuswap Regional District directors approved the issuance for a contract to Mounce Construction to build the golf course water main loop for a total cost of $767,087.

“We are enjoying very competitive pricing and that is very good news,” said Gary Holte, who manages the CSRD’s Environment & Engineering Services. Area F director Larry Morgan echoed the comments. “I’ve been advised that every single contract for this project has come in under budget,” he said. The total cost of the water system upgrades is estimated to

be $9 million. As such, there will be about $2 million available in 2014 to implement further upgrades to the water system. This will primarily involve upgrades to the water distribution system including replacement water mains, hydrants, and water valves. “The bottom line is that the CSRD will be completing more work to the water system than originally planned,” says Holte.

Plans to electrify Seymour Arm proceed The Columbia Shuswap Regional District has authorized the adoption of a bylaw that will initiate the establishment of electric power service to the Seymour Arm area,

following the successful community referendum on Sept. 28. In that vote, 109 residents voted yes, while 49 people were in opposition. Thy bylaw autho-

rizes the CSRD to take out a loan, which will be repaid by a parcel tax on the affected properties. The maximum each property would pay can be $600 per year.

The cost of installing the electrical infrastructure will be shared between property owners, the CSRD and BC Hydro, with the CSRD financing the project up to $3.6 million.

Ottawa’s senate scandal growing The scandal over the Senate grew larger Monday, with allegations from Senator Mike Duffy’s lawyer that Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s office knew a lot more about Duffy’s controversial expenses than the PM is admitting. These are simply allegations from a lawyer, but there is a hint that Duffy has some evidence to back these claims, in the form of emails from the prime minister’s office (PMO). The impetus for this spectacle of a senator in disrepute taking aim at the prime minister is a move being pushed by the Conservatives (almost certainly crafted in the PMO). They want to take away the pay of senators Duffy, Pamela Wallin and Patrick Brazeau — even though Duffy and Wallin, as yet, are facing no charges. Brazeau faces charges in a domestic dispute, and has been suspended with pay from the Senate. His expenses are also in question, but he faces no charges on this matter yet. While public opinion likely backs the suspension of the three senators’ pay, all of us, even senators in disrepute, deserve fair process. To take away the pay of senators who are under investigation but not facing any charges, sets a bad precedent. There may well be a case for suspending Brazeau’s pay, given that he is facing criminal charges, but for the moment, Duffy and Wallin should have the right to confront their accusers head-on and sit in the Senate until charged with criminal offences. The uproar over their expenses is legitimate, but it is not yet a criminal matter. Suspending their pay is a brazen attempt to take the heat off Harper who appointed all three and campaigned on a platform of Senate reform. The Conservatives and PMO cooked up a scheme which may come back to bite Harper in a very severe fashion. – Langley Times

A moose tale like no other

There is nothing like catching sight of a massive moose to evoke a sense of fascination and awe, but given the current moose population decline caused in part by climate change, such an experience may become far less likely. And yearning for the good old days of abundance would be a misunderstanding, as moose are a recent migrant to the Shuswap and the entire Southern Interior of the province. Moose are the largest member of the deer family and the least gregarious. They are native to the northern boreal forest and their name originates from the Algonquin word moosu for “twig biter” or the strips off young tree bark.” With their odd looking flap of skin called a dewlap or bell hanging below the neck, their hump above the shoulders and the male’s antlers that vary in size and shape according to their age, moose are their own comic caricature. It was logging and road building that allowed moose to migrate south to the Cariboo-Chilcotin sometime in the 1920s, and they may not have appeared in the Shus-

ShuSwAp pASSiOn Jim Cooperman wap until the 1940s. Along with the moose came wolves and as logging proceeded up the mountains, the wolves have now nearly annihilated all but a few remaining small herds of mountain caribou. Across North America, moose populations are declining rapidly. Moose hunting has been banned in Minnesota, where one population is at fewer than 100 from 4,000 and another is now less than half. There, the main culprits are brain worms and liver flukes, whereas in New Hampshire it is winter ticks. In British Columbia, where there are three subspecies of moose, populations are also in rapid decline. Government surveys show a 70-percent drop near Terrace, a 60-percent drop

near Anahim Lake and a 50percent drop around Prince George. Wildlife scientists are putting the blame on the pine beetle epidemic, which has resulted in massive clearcuts that reduce cover for the animals and improve access for wolves and hunters. Another problem is the increased use of all-terrain vehicles that provide easy access throughout the landscape. A report by Wildlife Infometrics of Mackenzie singles out unregulated hunting, which includes First Nations, who hunt without restrictions on the number, sex or age of the moose they take and are not obliged to report kills. But parasites may also be part of the problem, as in April, a moose that was starving and infested with ticks wandered into a Smithers grocery store. It was later euthanized. Here in the Shuswap, there are also reports of rapidly declining numbers of moose, particularly in the North Shuswap. Former local and provincial BC Wildlife Federation president, Mel Arnold, has heard from an Adams Lake area trapper who saw only one moose in

2012. Two other local hunters have confirmed Mel’s concerns and all three put the blame on wolves, which have apparently increased in numbers and have been seen at low elevations. We cherish the memories of every moose sighting, including the large bull moose we observed from our canoe that was swimming across Greenbush Lake. And then there was the moose that was headed straight for us with a logging truck directly behind it as we drove the steepest and narrowest section of the Adams Lake road in the winter. At the very last moment before impact the moose turned and jumped off a cliff, but no doubt it survived the snowy descent. In the winter, we often see signs of moose along the many deer tracks in the Lee Creek hills. And occasionally, we even see them along the highway near the lake. Sadly, these majestic creatures seem to be headed to oblivion, as yet another victim of the warming climate, development and perhaps, over-hunting. - James Murray’s column will return in the coming weeks.

The increased constant noise and fallout could devalue many homes by hundreds of thousands of dollars. The dirty track record of the pellet industry is not hard to find. The files of complaints of pollution and the industry’s unwillingness or inability to clean up its messes are readily available. Consider the fallout of sawdust particulates into the surrounding river and lake, your home and landscape. They can say they are “state-of the-art” all they want, but I don’t buy it. An excellent response from women in the South Shuswap communities of Blind Bay and Sorrento ensured the success of two mammography screenings held recently. The BC Cancer Foundation’s mobile mammogram unit is usually available in Sorrento for two days annually. This year, the Sorrento Drop-In Society was able to accommodate screenings on Sept. 27. The South Shuswap Health Services Society (SSHSS) collaborated with the Sorrento group to organize the second day at Blind Bay Marketplace on Sept. 28, and looked after advertising for both events. This was a first for the newly formed, non-profit SSHSS, and all appointments were filled. Clearly, there is a need for this service

Hear the rustle? Then it’s time to hustle

Gaia GardeninG Margo Westaway

When Jed from the Beverly Hillbillies discovered oil in his backyard, he had his version of black gold, Texas Tea – but Grannie was likely in the backyard garden sifting through her finished compost pile knowing she had her version of black gold and compost tea. When the snow finally starts to clear in spring, the first thing I look for is a patch of exposed forest floor, grab a handful of the rich humus and breathe in that heavenly scent of fresh earth. Healthy soil is the stuff of life – it’s alive and teaming with untold billions of bacteria, fungi, protozoa, microbes and worms. More microorganisms germinate in half a cup of fertile soil than there are humans on the planet, so we want to make lots of it to use in our new gardens and as a soil amendment for your existing ones. Making good soil

and mulch is my primary goal every year and I make loads of it in the fall by filling up five big bins with nicely layered materials for the worms and microbes to digest over the winter. This requires bags and bags and bags of shredded leaves, grass clippings and wood chips (a great carbon-nitrogen mix) along with whatever else I can get my hands on that isn’t too big in size. This kind of volume requires planning, so I horse trade a tree service guy for a pie in exchange for a load of chips and keep a big stash of dry grass I had mooched over the summer wherever I could find them (usually under the trees in vacant lots or people’s yards), which I keep in bags until the leaves come down. Then I’m in constant motion until the bins are all filled up and covered, which is usually a race against time before my hose freezes. Leaves in the fall are beautiful. There is a tree in town that turns such a bright yellow that it looks as though it glows, and the maples that turn red look like they’re on fire. It is such a pleasure to rake up those lovelies under the vibrantly colored canopies, all the while

knowing that they’re going to be put to good use rather than off to the dump like so many do, which is such a terrible waste. Leaves are a wonderful, free gift of nature and a great source of organic material for our gardens and compost, and that’s not all. They’re great to mow into your lawn for a natural fertilizer and a soil builder-upper. By spreading them on your garden beds and around your trees, shrubs and perennials in the fall, they will offer a protective cover by insulating the roots from the driving rains, frost and harsh winter conditions as well as providing vital food and habitat for a huge number of insects, worms and other critters that dwell in the soil. They will also discourage winter weed growth. The leaf bits help aerate and retain moisture in your soil, absorb the heavy rains to prevent nutrient leaching, help to prevent erosion and most importantly, will provide plenty of food for the micro and macro critters in the soil food web, who in exchange, will give back by converting that raw material into nutrient-rich soil. I like to mix up shredded leaves with fresh grass and wood-

chips for nutrient diversity, which is key. So when we hear the rustle, it’s time to hustle. Spring for a chipper or leaf shredder because the smaller the bits, the faster they break down and they don’t mat like they do when they’re still whole. Use dry ones if you can too, otherwise they can gum up the machine and slow down the process considerably. I shred up all I need to fill the bins with the other materials, then shred a bunch more so I can keep layering them into my food compost bin throughout the year, along with the woodchips and fresh grass clippings and a sprinkling of clean sand for minerals. Just make sure you have sufficient moisture between the layers or it won’t cook down properly.

It must have been a gardener that created the design for our Canadian flag, because leaves are truly a national treasure and they should be treasured by all of us.

INFORMATION DESIGNED TO PROMOTE AND ENHANCE YOUR WELLBEING

Reducing risk for heart disease could save your life Heart disease doesn’t discriminate, affecting men and women regardless of their age or where they live. In the United States, cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death, according to the American Heart Association. North of the border, one Canadian dies from heart disease or stroke every 7 minutes. So says the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada, a charity that annually spends millions of dollars researching heart disease and promoting healthier lifestyles. For most men and women, the prevalence of heart disease is no great surprise. Nearly every adult can point to a loved one who has dealt with heart disease. Many men and women can even point to a friend or family member who lost their battle with heart disease. That familiarity should make people even more willing to adopt a heart-healthy lifestyle, something the AHA admits is the best defense against heart disease and stroke. Though not all risk factors for heart disease can be controlled, there are ways to reduce that risk considerably. Control your blood pressure High blood pressure is the number one risk factor for stroke and a major risk for heart disease. Blood pressure measures the pressure or force of blood against the walls if your blood vessels, also known as arteries. Having your blood pressure taken is a routine on most doctor visits, but many people are unaware what the number actually measures.

The top number measures the pressure when the heart contracts and pushes blood out, while the bottom number is the lowest pressure when the heart relaxes and beats. Blood pressure that is consistently above 140/90 is considered high. A normal blood pressure is one between 120/80 and 129/84. Because of the relation between blood pressure and heart disease and stroke, men and women must take steps to control their blood pressure. Having your blood pressure checked regularly is a good start. Once you get checked, reduce the amount of sodium in your diet, replacing high-sodium snacks with healthier fare and monitoring sodium intake during the day. The Heart & Stroke Foundation recommends eating less than 2,300 mg of sodium per day, and that includes salt added when making meals or eating at the table. Maintaining a healthy body weight and successfully managing stress are additional ways to control blood pressure. Limit alcohol consumption The AHA notes that excessive consumption of alcohol can contribute to high triglycerides, produce irregular heartbeats and eventually lead to heart failure or stroke. There is some evidence that people who drink moderately have a lower risk of heart disease than nondrinkers. But it’s also important to note that people who drink moderately also have a lower risk of heart disease than people who

Limiting alcohol consumption to no more than one or two drinks per day is one way to reduce risk for heart disease. drink excessively. So when it comes to alcohol, moderation reigns supreme. One or two standard drinks per day is enough depending on gender. The Heart & Stroke Foundation suggests that women who drink should not drink more than nine drinks a week, while men should not exceed 14 drinks in a single week. Of course, if there are extenuating circumstances then all bets are off. Men and women with liver disease, mental illness or a personal or family history of alcohol problems should avoid alcohol entirely. In addition, those taking certain medications should avoid alcohol

consumption as well. For the latter group, discuss alcohol consumption with your physician when he or she writes you a prescription. Quit smoking The decision to smoke tobacco is the decision to invite a host of potential physical ailments, not the least of which is heart disease. Smoking contributes to the buildup of plaque in the arteries, increases the risk of blood clots, reduces the amount of oxygen in the blood and increases blood pressure. As if that’s not enough, smoking also harms those around you. According to the American Cancer Society, secondhand smoke

is responsible for 3,400 lung cancer deaths among nonsmokers in the United States each year. In Canada, nearly 8,000 nonsmokers lose their lives each year from exposure to secondhand smoke. What might surprise some people, however, is how quickly quitting smoking can reduce a person’s risk for heart disease. According to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, within 48 hours of quitting a person’s chances of having heart disease have already started to go down. For those who successfully avoid smoking for one year, the risk of a suffering a smoking-related heart attack has been cut in half. After 15 years, the risk of heart attack is the same as someone who never smoked at all. Embrace physical activity People who are physically inactive are twice as likely to be at risk for heart disease or stroke than people who are physically active. The AHA notes that research has shown that getting at least 30 minutes of physical activity on five or more days of the week can help lower blood pressure and lower cholesterol while helping to maintain a healthy weight. If starting from scratch, even light physical activity can provide some health benefits. Gradually work your way up to more demanding activities, and make physical activity a routine part of your daily life. More information on heart disease and stroke is available online at www.heart.org and www. heartandstroke.ca.

The weather cooperated allowing approximately 45 cadets incredible aerial views of Salmon Arm and the experience of flight. Four 222 Shuswap glider pilots were on hand to help with the exercise.

City gets good value from ORL By Richard Rolke bLAcK preSS

Okanagan residents appear to be getting good bang for their buck when it comes to libraries. Okanagan Regional Library has released the findings of a value for money study conducted by the auditing firm of Grant Thornton. “Most municipalities are getting what they are putting into the system — some a little more, some a little less,” said director Catherine Lord.

However, there are some discrepancies, according to the study which is based on 2011 figures. “Salmon Arm is getting more value for less dollars contributed but Osoyoos is getting less service for more money,” said director Mike Macnabb. The ORL board has asked staff to generate a simple of the version annually to guide decision making. “The board will establish high level parameters for the management team to generally align area

Also, the board has approved the 2014 budget, which includes a 1.62 per cent increase. “We boosted up the budget a little more,” said Macnabb of increases to staff pensions and increased programs. The 1.62 per cent increase amounts to about 75 cents per capita.

Rising star to shine here By Leah Blain contributor

Comfortable on the stage in front of thousands or tagging calves on his family’s Alberta ranch, Brett Kissel is busier with his music career these days. The rising star is topping the charts with a number 1 Canadian country single, a number 1 video on Country Music TV, and a number 1 country album on Itunes, and he’ll be playing in Salmon Arm at the Shuswap Music Hall – SASCU Rec Centre. It’s a treat that local residents probably won’t ever have again says Shuswap Music Hall promoter Mark Greenhalgh: “He’s well on his way. We’re staying on the cusp of what’s happening and a year from now you’re not going to be able to see Brett Kissel in Salmon Arm.” Kissel’s songs hit an emotional chord as they reflect true-life sentiment and real situations. Country In My Blood portrays life on the Alberta cattle ranch that has been in his family for more than a century, and the moving ballad, Together, is a loving tribute to his grandparents. Salmon Arm’s Jesse Mast will open for Kissel. Greenhalgh says helping emerging artists by giving them this kind of opportunity is a passion of his and one of the goals of the

n Country music star Brett Kissel will perform Thursday, Nov 7 at the SASCU Rec Centre, in a concert that will feature guest Jesse Mast. Shuswap Music Hall concert series. “The Shuswap Music Hall is basically a partnership between Salmon Arm Recreation and myself. I offer my services to bring in some regular entertainment in the shoulder season – up to a show a month. Jesse is going to be following in Brett Kissel’s footsteps – he is an amazing talent. Having Brett will create some excitement around our concert series and connecting that with a local artist is a win-win.” Mast, 17, has opened for other artists, but it was nothing like this. “This is the biggest artist I’ve ever opened for. He was the headliner for the CCMA’s (Canadian Country Music Awards) and it was pretty neat to find out I was opening for him. It was pretty electrifying.” Kissel, 22, started on his musical path

at the age of seven, with a Sears catalogue guitar. His influence came from Johnny Cash, Buck Owens and George Strait. By the time he was 10, he was playing three-chord Johnny Cash songs at talent shows. Mast started on a different musical path. He wasn’t a country boy at all and his first musical heroes were Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin and Vivaldi. Then his influence was expanded: “I listened to three kinds of music: gospel, blue grass and Celtic. My first instrument was the fiddle. The fiddle was the love of my life until I came across the mandolin, and from there I started playing guitar and singing.” Kissel got his first paid gig at the age of 12, when he received a $50 honourarium to play for a local 4H club. Mast entered local talent shows and

found he had a passion for performing. In the past couple of years he has racked up some impressive awards including first place in the Country 103 radio Interior Talent Search, and first place in the Global Country Star Search, which will allow Mast to represent Canada at the North America Country Music Association’s international competition in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee in 2014. Greenhalgh is anticipating a good crowd for the concert, which is the second Shuswap Music Hall concert. “I think people are going to be excited to see Brett – his name is creating some waves and those are the kinds of artists we’re going to be bringing in...” The concert takes place at 7 p.m. Advance pricing is available until Nov. 2. For tickets call 250-8324044, or stop by the SASCU Rec Centre.

break, enter and theft. Theft deterrence is best effected through layers of security – this will cause the thief to give up on your property as it will take too long to gain access. Exterior doors must have quality deadbolts, and windows need to be well-secured against prying. Additional measures, such as steel bars over windows and doors, are recommended for unoccupied residences. Storage sheds should have quality padlocks with

steel cover boxes mounted on the door to prevent access with bolt cutters. Monitored alarm systems combined with high-resolution video surveillance are important to notify owners of attempted break-ins, and provide police with evidence suitable for court. Outdoor equipment, utility and boat trailers should be mechanically or electrically disabled and chained/ cable locked to an immoveable object such

as a concrete foundation wall. House alarm systems can be expanded to include cable alarms for outdoor equipment. Ignition immobilizers and GPS tracking systems are now widely available for high-end equipment such as travel trailers, skid-steer equipment, all-terrain vehicles, etc.

The Chase Heat Junior Hockey Team has just completed one quarter of its regular season. After 13 games the team is second in the Doug Birks division with 14 points based on six wins, five losses and two overtime losses. The team is over 500 on its record with 48 goals for and 46 against. Jake Mattes has played seven games in goal with a 2.99 goals-against average and a .915 save percentage. Mike Byer has played in six with 4.06 and .890 numbers. The three leading scorers on the team come from three different lines indicating balance on the roster – Connor Venne with 17 points, Kaleb Boyle with 16 and Nic Findanza with 15. The team is 11th in the 20-team league on special teams, 16.67 per cent on the power play and 75.76 per cent on penalty kill. Overall, it’s a sharp improvement over the squads of the past two years. In the past week the Heat met the Sicamous Eagles at home on Thursday the 17th and came out on the short end of a 5-2 contest. Mattes faced 25 shots in goal with Boyle and Cody Koskimaki getting markers for the home side. On Saturday, the boys faced the Summerland Steam at home and squeaked out a 4–3 victory in overtime. Byer faced 32 shots between the pipes with defenceman Trevor Okino potting two, Kaleb Carpenter getting his first in his first game back and Chad Wilde popping in the winner in OT. Sunday saw the team in Kamloops versus the Storm. The rivalry is intense, with the Storm leading the division. Byer was once again in net and faced 54 shots in a close 6–5 overtime loss. Heat goals scored by Cody Hodges, two in the second from leading scorer Connor Venne, with Kurtis Johnson and Boyle stretching the twine in the third.

“Did you give thanks today?” it said. I paused a moment, scratched my head. All day I’d worried, sulked and whined; complaints had occupied my mind. I’d watched my plans deflate and wilt, but now I felt a twinge of guilt. I know I should consider more the things that I am thankful for. . . The faces that I love so much, the moments left for me to touch. It’s time to give my frowns a rest, and count the many ways I’m blessed! Determination

n Ryan Berke of the Salmon Arm Pee Wee Colts takes two Kelowna Lions players for a ride during the teams’ contest Sunday on the Capital News Centre turf field in Kelowna.

Oil Kings register slick start to season The Salmon Arm Atom Recreation Oil Kings kicked off their season with a win and a tie in games in Armstrong and Vernon on the weekend. The Oil Kings were firing on all cylinders Saturday in Armstrong against the challenging North Okanagan Knights team. The Oil Kings registered 15 shots on the Knights’ net but strong goaltending limited their lead to one goal. In the second frame, Salmon Arm made good on six of 17 shots on goal to end the period with a score of 7-0. The Knights’ goalie took another 22 shots in the third period, letting in three for a final score of 9-1 for the Oil Kings. The team faced off against a fiercer opponent in Vernon Sunday. Oil Kings netminder Garrett Kelley faced nine shots and gave up five goals while the offence got only two shots on goal in the first. The team picked up the pace in the second, scoring three times on 11 shots on goal. The score was 6-4 at the beginning of the third period but Salmon Arm came out strong and scored within the first minute of play bringing the score to within one. Feverish action saw both teams consistently breaking into each other’s zones and, with about five minutes remaining on the clock, the dust settled and the game was tied 8 – 8. Salmon Arm got the go-ahead goal with about two minutes left in the final frame but a determined Vernon team held the Oil Kings in their own zone, tying up the score again with less than 10 seconds remaining in the game.
