PRINCE RUPERT - Just days before a CN train carrying oil derailed in Alberta, causing a fiery explosion and forcing the evacuation of a small community west of Edmonton, Minister of Natural Gas Development Rich Coleman said he was not a fan of the idea of shipping oil-by-rail. Earlier in the week, the provincial governments of both British Columbia and Alberta agree that moving bitumen by rail to the west coast is a “viable alternative” to pipelines. Support for the oil-by-rail option can be found in the terms of reference of a Deputy Ministers working group aimed at opening new energy export opportunities, which simply states “if pipelines are not developed, rail will step into the void to deliver bitumen to the
West Coast”. But speaking from an energy conference in Daegu, South Korea, Coleman acknowledged oilby-rail is certainly not the preferred method of the provincial government. “It makes us nervous and it makes our communities nervous ... we are not interested in seeing millions of barrels of oil moved by rail across British Columbia without being assured absolutely in the safety of the land base,” he said, noting he has told the federal government the same. “Rail didn’t come up in our conversation, other than to say that I had the concern that rail would be the wrong solution to this ... obviously the optimal suggestion of moving oil by rail isn’t there given the situation that happened in Quebec a few months ago, which was a terrible disaster for that community.”

While noting no CN customers are asking CN to transport crude at the moment, despite documents showing Nexen pursuing a plan to ship oil-by-rail to Prince Rupert for export to Asia, CN’s Mark Hallman said rail is a safe option should the need arise. “Railways have a solid record in transporting hazardous material traffic. According to the Association of American Railroads (AAR), of which CN is a member, 99.997 per cent of hazardous materials carloads moved by railroads arrive at their destination without a release caused by an accident,” he said. “Railways complement the existing pipeline infrastructure and they are just as safe and as environmentally sustainable as pipelines in moving energy to market.” Coleman told reporters that the inclusion of rail in the terms

Among others representing their unions, Randy Grisewood was on hand, the training coordinator for the operating engineers. A majority of pipeline jobs come under that banner, and he said jobs are being offered as fast as people can be trained. “Crane operators, heavy duty mechanics are highest demand. We can’t keep up,” he said. “In our training courses for heavy equipment operator, we put ten people through the class, we get more than half of them out to work right away, right at the end of the class.” Crane operators even have a 100 per cent success rate in finding employment, he said. Meanwhile though the demographics are changing and work demands are also pulling in far more female students than before. Nash said that a welding course in Terrace is seeing half their enrolment from women. “There is a shortage of workers out there so no reason the different demographics can’t take training and become part of the workforce,” he said.

KITIMAT - On October 2 the Canadian Pipeline Advisory Council hosted an “Interactive Pipeline Tradeshow” in the cafeteria at Mount Elizabeth Middle Secondary School. The event brought students and the public together to check out the opportunities available to people interested in joining the trades ahead of a number of pipeline proposals for the area. Heading up the event was Lyall Nash, the chairman of the Canadian Pipeline Advisory Council. “We represent the workers. We have four unions that supply our workers: Labourers, operating engineers, welders and teamsters. We represent the contractors that install the pipe, do all the construction. We’ve been around for 60 years and built all the major pipelines in Canada,” he said. He said students in particular were interested in what specific jobs pipeline construction could offer. To that he pointed to skilled workers like welders, who can get work in many fields, not just pipeline construction. The trades are actively seeking new students into training programs because demand is currently so high. And this is before any pipelines have received an official goahead for this region. “I would think if one of these pipelines were to go, whether it’s one of the gas lines or even the Northern Gateway, yes there would be a bit of a problem,” said Nash about finding enough workers. “Right now in Alberta we have five major projects underway and employing probably in the neighbourhood of 5,000 people. People are there. We expect in B.C., because there hasn’t been any major pipelines here for a number of years, all the trades are going to do some training.” It’s no suprise to add that Nash has no question about the ability to safely build pipelines. “We know they can [be built safely],” he said. “The technology nowadays, the pipe is very good, the pipe is all coated in a factory and the welding is all done automatically so there’s no imperfections in the welding and with

TERRACE - Mills Memorial is getting a new x-ray machine, replacing one that’s well past its prime. “It was really at the end of its life and it was hard to maintain and to find parts,” explained the Northern Health Authority’s Chris Simms of the old machine. The project includes renovations to the room in which the new device will be housed, within the hospital’s imaging department. “What we’re going to have is better imaging quality and lower radiation exposure,” said Simms of the new device. The new device incorporates digital technology, superior to the analog one its replacing. And it’s also less expensive with a total project cost of $400,000 compared to the $800,000 price tag for a new analog one alone. “So it’s not only better, it’s cheaper,” noted Simms, adding physicians and specialists will have the benefit of improved images. The digital aspect of the new machine also means it will be easier and quicker to transmit

And that technology will result in faster scans so that technicians will be able to see more patients each day, he said. Sixty per cent of the cost is being covered by the Northern Health Authority and 40 per cent by the Northwest Re-
gional Hospital District, a regional taxation authority. The hospital district “is pleased to partner with Northern Health to see this equipment replacement go ahead, allowing Mills Memorial to maintain and improve services,” said hospital district administrator Yvonne Koerner. The new machine is expected to be installed and up and running by the end of the month.

KITIMAT - He’s one of the country’s experts on energy and energy history and he’ll be on stage at Mount Elizabeth Theatre during an energy forum and trade show next week. Let’s Talk Energy happens on October 26, starting at 5:30 p.m. at Mount Elizabeth Theatre. Admission is free. It’s a combination information session — which will be led by the energy expert Peter Tertzakian – and entertainment show with music by country music singer Aaron Pritchett, who has roots in Kitimat. A trade show will also accompany the event. Tertzakian said that while his speech would cover a lot of the issues around energy development and its history. But he also wants people to know he’s not here to sell anyone on any project. “I’m not coming out to sell anybody any-
thing. “It’s really an energy conversation,” he said. But while he doesn’t speak to any project, he does say Canada has good footing as far as developing our resources. “We are one of the most innovative and responsible producers of energy natural resources in the world and we in Canada have an opportunity to use that responsible generation of energy resources not only
to our own advantage but the advantage of the world.” But he knows it’s not all sunshine for the province’s burgeoning energy industry. “I’m coming there to acknowledge a whole series of issues, not really to debate them but more to relay an understanding for both parties,” he said. “I think that Kitimat is a community that is being reborn in a sense,” he added.
KITIMAT - The Catholic Women’s League in Kitimat is hosting their annual bazaar in the Christ the King Catholic Church hall. This year’s theme is “around the world,” and the event takes place from noon to 3 p.m. tomorrow, October 26. Everyone is welcome to attend the event, which is, each year, a big draw for the community. This year it will be full of things such as the international cafe, a bake sale, a sewing and craft table, a giant multi-prize raffle, a fish pond for kids, a cake walk and a ‘riffa raffe.’

ithout a doubt, Mount Elizabeth is one of Kitimat’s most enduring and dangerous icons. It’s snowy slopes have been beckoning adventurers for generations.
The mountain’s Haisla name is not well known, but on early mine survey maps it was known as Photographer’s Mountain. Clearly it was recognized for its striking alpine profile. Even its true measured elevation has apparently changed. Early cartographers and government surveyors pegged its height at 5,500 feet, but today’s more sophisticated equipment has it’s height recorded at 6,200 feet (1800 metres). Early officials in the 1950s at Alcan had thought the mountain was un-named and were surprised when early residents began calling it Mt. Elizabeth. Many thought it had been named to honour the new queen. It was Queen Elizabeth’s coronation in June of 1953 and in many locations world-wide, places, buildings, etc., were named for her. We in Kitimat were not clear about the origins of the name until a letter was received from retired BC land surveyor, Phillip Moncton, who had read some early Northern Sentinel newspapers at his Victoria home and decided to clear up the uncertainty of the name. His letter of December 1955 to the Sentinel’s editor is now part of the archives of our museum. In the letter he confirms what Elizabeth Anderson Varley stated in Kitimat My Valley. He said that the mountain was indeed named by him to honour the charming Elizabeth Anderson, the first pioneer child to live in the Kitimat Valley. Phillip Moncton was a great fan of the Anderson family. He certainly appreciated the wonderful hospitality offered to him and his crew on their various visits to the
valley. He was particularly impressed with Elizabeth Anderson. Early Alcan workers, especially Europeans log book in a secure tin can at the base of a rock cairn. Minister’s trip kiboshed TERRACE - Bad weather last week conspired to keep provincial finance minister Mike de Jong from visiting the region. He had planned to fly into Terrace from Kelowna via Prince George Oct. 17 but bad weather in Prince George first delayed a departure time and then resulted in de Jong returning to Vancouver. He then attempted to fly out of Vancouver but foggy weather not only delayed take off but when his plane did fly north, it was diverted to Prince Rupert because of fog at the airport here. That resulted in the cancellation of a number of appointments, including a two-hour reception to be hosted by the Terrace and District Chamber of Commerce the afternoon of Oct. 18. Also delayed, rescheduled and then finally scrubbed altogether was a public event to promote the announcement of improved cell service between Terrace and Prince George. A search and rescue truck, fire truck, ambulance, police vehicle and Telus vehicle were lined up side by side in front of the fire hall in anticipation of de Jong’s visit. Firefighters, ambulance personnel, a police
MIKE DE JONG officer, search and rescue officials and others were in attendance. “It’s very unfortunate and the minister apologizes,” said finance ministry official Glen Plummer. There are no immediate plans to reschedule a visit by de Jong. Had he been able to land, de Jong would have been just the second provincial finance minister since 2008 to visit the northwest. He had planned to take in comments leading to next year’s provincial budget. Meetings are being held across the province leading up to the next budget. Plummer said that would now most likely happen by having de Jong conduct a telephone town hall.

Speaking by telephone Oct. 17 when de Jong was still hopeful of getting to the northwest, he said he was looking forward to his visit. “It’s important to look at what’s going on in planning for future growth,” said de Jong of the northwest which is anticipating a boom from the development of a liquefied natural gas industry. De Jong also provided a provincial budget update, saying latest spending and revenue information indicates the province has a surplus of $136 million. “To me $136 million is a lot of money and on a budget of $44 billion, it’s razor thin,” said de Jong. “But we are tracking spending and we have an excellent track record for expenditure control,” he added. “But there are certain aspects we can’t control,” he said. “For instance, if we have a bad fire year. This year was not the worst but it did cost.” De Jong said BC has “turned the financial corner” and has retained it Triple A credit rating, a factor that reduces its borrowing cost and, ultimately, impact on the taxpayer.

Volunteering to make a difference in Rupert By Martina Perry THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT - Everyone can contribute if given the chance. Prince Rupert’s Bijoy Paul, a developmentally disabled man in his mid-20s, is a shining example of that. Paul is a client of Thompson Community Services and is in the service provider’s employment program. The program aims to match disabled individuals with job or volunteering opportunities, with help from a number of job coaches. Thompson Community Services’ Val Wholmes, who leads the employment program, said the aim is to change employers perspectives on hiring people with disabilities. “If [employers] would give people with disabilities a chance they would find out how consistent, reliable and dependable they are. They could be an outstanding employee to have in a place of business, given the chance,” Wholmes said. “We’re on a mission to get jobs for people with disabilities. Even if it’s an hour a day, or week, it means something to them. They want real work for real pay, just like everyone else.” Paul has been looking for a job for some time, and took on volunteering at the Salvation Army Food Bank in June. Each Tuesday and Thursday Paul volunteers for an hour, working along
with his job coach Wholmes, and said he enjoys his time at the food bank. Each week Paul helps stock shelves, recycle cardboard and assist with whatever else is needed. Erica Collison, family services at the Salvation Army Food Bank, works with Paul and said he is very committed. “He’s always on time and here every Tuesday and Thursday for the whole duration. He’s a good team player,” she said, adding she would recommend other groups and businesshire developmentally Val Wholmes es disabled individuals. Sgt. Maj. Ken Copping, who’s in charge of the food bank, said he’s grateful to have a hard working volunteer like Paul on hand. “There’s many people that feel they have nothing to do or cannot contribute, or are unemployed and think there’s no hope. This young man comes in and has a sense of direction,” Copping said. “For those who can’t find work, there’s opportunities to volunteer, to have routine in life. Hopefully you acquire some skills or learn new ones when you volunteer,” he said. Wholmes agrees that volunteering allows people to gain the necessary skills to help get employment in the future. “He’s been doing awesome, and does a great job. He looks forward to volunteering each week,” she said.

PRINCE RUPERT - The Charles Hays Secondary School Rainmakers hosted two of their northwest counterparts on Saturday for the Senior Boys Soccer Zone competition. Under the rules of the tournament, each team played each team and the winner was decided by wins or, in the event of a tie, goals for and against as provincial regulations only allow two games per day. The boys started their first game against Smithers Secondary School at nine a.m. and, after a lot of back and forth action, came away with a 1-0 win. “It was really good game by both teams, but we got a goal with only a few minutes left to play that gave use the win,” explained Peter Riley, who was on the sidelines with the team. After only a short break, the Rainmakers again took to the field for their second consecutive game. Although the score showed a one-sided 4-0 win for Terrace, Riley said the score didn’t reflect the play. “It was a close game up until that first goal. When Terrace scored the first one, you could see the players got a little disheartened and frustrated and Terrace was able to capitalize,” he said. Mathematically eliminated from winning the championship, Prince Rupert could only watch as Terrace faced Smithers in the third and final game of zones. The two teams played to a 1-1 tie, giving Terrace the overall victory with one win and one tie. Prince Rupert placed second with one win and one loss, and Smithers finished in third with one tie and one loss.

KITIMAT - The Kitimat Ice Demons dropped both of their first double-header weekend games on the road last weekend, getting blanked 4-0 on Saturday night by a stingy Houston Luckies defence and hot goaltender, Colton Wardrop, and then the Demons were unable to sustain a third period comeback to tie the game, getting edged 4-3 in a penalty filled affair with the Steelheads Sunday at Smithers. On Saturday the Houston Luckies, looking for their first win of the season, came out strong to score one in the first period, by Tyler Poznikoff, his first of two in the game, (Rylan Stanyer, Brian Dinelle) at near the mid-way point of the period. Meanwhile the Ice Demons, prominently missing defensive stalwart Jeff Mildenberger, who did not make the trip, has weary bus legs and were not at their best in the early going and into the sec-
ond period of this game. Exactly 20 minutes and 50 seconds later, Matt Matuss got his first of two, shorthanded, with assists to Skylar Hassell and Randy Zydlyk. Just 10 minutes later, with the second period winding down, Matuss rapped home his second of the game, again assisted by Hassell and Alonzo Slaney. The Ice Demons came on hard in the third period, firing 14 shots at Wardrop, but were unable to beat him, while Tyler Poznikoff struck for his second from Brad Crump to give the Houston Luckies a satisfying 4-0 win, With the impetus provided by the win, the Luckies took on the Lac La Hache Tomahawks on Sunday and laid a 10-3 beating on them, to emphasize their 9-5 loss to the Smithers Steelheads, Saturday night. Meanwhile, on Sunday, the Ice Demons moved in looking for some better luck in goal-scoring at Smithers, but fell behind 2-1 early in the second period after
each team recorded a goal in the first. Josh Aspenlind (Ian Smith, Darryl Young) gave Smithers a 1-0 lead at 8.37 of the period, on the power play, with Jordan Goncalves in the box for a slash. But it took the Demons only 31 second to tie the game on a goal by Ben Rumley (Josh Slanina, Jeremy Brady). That was all the scoring in the first as the two teams took four penalties each including a check from behind that earned Randall Groot a game ejection, at the 17.39 mark. This, however was the precursor to a game that became increasingly nasty and saw one Ice Demons’ player ejected in the second period and two more in the third, leaving a lot of questions about the refereeing in the later going. Calvin Johnson put the Steelheads into the lead with the only goal of a hard-fought second period, with assists to Kirk Meaver and Mike Wall. This second period saw even more penalty action in-
cluding a bizarre series of head shots called by referee Greg Wacholtz, at 11.42 of the period, which saw two Steelheads’ players and two Ice Demons draw two minutes and 10 minutes each. However, Demons highscoring veteran, Blaine Markwart was handed two minutes for head contact and was ejected from the game. Other players in the crowded boxes were Ryan Green and Josh Aspenlind for the Steelheads and Chris Vilness and Nick Markowsky for the Ice Demons. Just a minute into the third period, Mike Wall combined with Ian Smith and Calvin Johnson to give Smithers a 3-1 lead and eight minutes later Calvin Johnson got his second of the game (Meaver, Ryan Devries) to give the Steelheads a 4-1 cushion before Kitimat exorcised some Demons of their own by netting twice in 30 seconds with Steve Venman getting his first of the year at 10.01 (Jeremy Brady, Josh Slanina) and Terry Whelan
scored his first of the season, at 10.31, with assists to Derek Wakita and Wade Masch. The two goals came shortly after a game ejection to Ian Coleman at 8.09 of the period, for complaining to the referee after a slash. The fast goals were followed by a big brou-ha-ha at 11.42 of the period that saw Adam DeVries and Darryl Young penalized for slashing and roughing, respectively, with Nick Markowski also penalized for roughing while Jordan Goncalves was given a two minute penalty for checking from behind as well as a game ejection. However the three goals burst in one minute and 12 second turned out to be all the scoring in the game as the Steelheads tightened up the defence and both teams kept out of the box. Tommy Mildenberger took the loss with 25 saves on 29 shots, while Smithers goaltender Tyler Perreault stopped 33 of 36 Ice Demons shots, for his third win of the young season.
No doubt the game stats will be remembered when these two teams meet again on Kitimat Ice on November 9. The Ice Demons will also host the Steelheads for the third game of the season on November 25 at Tamitik. The uneven schedule has the Ice Demons meeting the Steelheads only three times, while they clash with the Prince Rupert Rampage five times with three of these games on Rupert ice. In other games this past weekend the Prince Rupert Rampage came up with their first win, dropping the Terrace River Kings 3-2 in Terrace while the Williams Lake Stampeders split two games the Stamps winning Friday night by a score of 6-4 Friday and Quesnel took the close Saturday game 5-4. This coming weekend the Ice Demons stay on the road playing the Terrace River Kings on Friday night and travelling to Prince Rupert for their second game against the Rampage, on Saturday Nov. 2.

Forestry company to fix financial problems By Josh Massey

TERRACE - A forestry company which has had financial problems this year is renewing efforts at restarting operations on land it has leased from the city. YaoRun Wood Ltd., owned by Chinese interests, has new people on site and is preparing to move out logs worth an estimated $3 million which have been accumulating since spring. “We are going to buck those logs up into 5.9 metres and put them into containers and get them ready to ship to China. Then as soon as we ship it we will get the money from the bank,” said new operations manager Xinchen Sung. His goal is for the logs to be exported from Prince Rupert to China beginning by mid- to lateNovember. YaoRun is also three months late on payments to the city for land it has leased on Keith Ave. and Sung is saying the company’s accountant will take care of the debt by the end of the month with at least partial payment. YaoRun late last year signed a deal with the city calling for monthly lease payments of $10,000. Meanwhile, the city has been looking into taking action if nonpayment continues to be an issue. “We are considering our options which we are unable to disclose at this time,” said the city’s chief administrative officer Heather Avison last week. Mayor Pernarowski said he was unaware that YaoRun was three months behind. “It’s like any other business transaction. Some companies take longer to pay. Maybe that’s something that our staff is working through right now,” said the mayor. Though he added that leniency would only extend so far. “If they continue to not pay the lease we would have to take back control of the land and do what
you normally do in a situation where any company is not paying their bill and look for someone new to take on that piece of property.” YaoRun is also behind on stumpage payments to the province for the logging it has done. The company has been put on a five-month repayment plan by the province but officials say they can’t provide information on whether the plan is working. YaoRun twice this year had entrances to its logyard blocked by local contractors who said they weren’t being paid for work performed. The most recent blockade, in September, was conducted by Terrace’s McPherson Trucking. Company owner Vic McPherson said he was happy to finally receive payment from YaoRun, but that he probably wouldn’t be doing work for the company after having over $10,000 withheld since May. “You learn from your mistakes,” said McPherson, “don’t keep making them.” “The only reason I got a little action is because I blocked the road off and then they got excited, so at least I got paid anyway.” The company was also evicted from a house on McConnell Ave. in the Horseshoe it was using as a business office. “All the previous employers left the company suddenly and there is nobody working here. We can’t make things happen if there is nobody working here,” said Sung. Recently another company from Vanderhoof, Zacharias Contracting, was hired. It is now sorting and cutting logs in preparation for the shipments YaoRun expects to start next month. The property YaoRun is leasing from the city has had a long history of forest-related activities. It also served as a logyard for Skeena Cellulose which once dominated the industry in the northwest through a pulp mill in Prince Rupert, a sawmill here
in Terrace and a sawmill in Carnaby east of the Hazeltons. That company went into receivership in the late 1990s and various attempts to revive all or parts of its operations were unsuccessful. Its mill was last owned by a local company, the Terrace Lumber Company. The mill has since been dismantled.

Dennis Earl Flegel September 13, 1946 to October 17, 2013 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Dennis Earl Flegel on October 17, 2013 at the age of 67. Dennis was born in Kelowna, BC on September 13, 1946 to Joseph and Anne Flegel. He moved to Kitimat in 1954. Dennis had a great childhood growing up here and became an Automotive Technician. He provided years of great service to the people of Kitimat. Dennis will be deeply missed by his sons; Shane (Robyn), and Trent (Nancy). His grandchildren; Marisa, Eloise, Annetta, Joseph, and baby to come. Siblings: Richard Flegel and Linda Myers. Along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family and friends. Memorial service will be held at Christ the King Church in Kitimat on Monday, October 28, 2013 at 1:30pm. Reception to follow in the basement of the Church.
Gerd Ratzburg 1927 – 2013
The family of Gerd Ratzburg is saddened to announce his passing on October 12, 2013, following a lengthy illness. Gerd is survived by his best friend and the love of his life, his wife Hannelore, his sons Wilf (Hanne) and Ralph (Eva) and his grandchildren Britta, Barb, Justin and Angela. He also leaves his sister, Laura (Georg) Kasperczyk and step brothers Hein (Ille) and Herbert (Karin) Böckmann. Gerd and Hannelore left Bremen, Germany and became one of the pioneering families in the new town of Kitimat. After working with Alcan for many years, they moved to Vancouver where he was employed at the Triumf research facility at the University of British Columbia. Retirement gave him the opportunity to continue to travel and sail extensively with Hannelore; with many trips to Europe and Mexico. He loved a good debate, a good book and a good wind in his sails. Mostly he loved living in Vancouver and being near the sea. When asked why he never bought lottery tickets, he smiled and replied, “I married the most wonderful woman in the world and have the best family a man could ask for. I have already won the lottery.” Though Gerd did not believe in an afterlife, we know that Opa’s legacy will live on through his grandchildren.

Loving husband and father passed peacefully on October 18, 2013 at Terraceview Lodge at the age of 92. He is predeceased by his father, Anton and his mother, Ika. He leaves behind his sister Mary, son John and daughters Beverley and Louise (Ernest); also grandchildren Lauren, Dylan, Cohen and Vincent. Michael was a veteran who enlisted and served honourably as a member of the Royal Canadian Engineers in Europe during World War 2. After the war, he came home to Kapuskasing, Ontario where he worked at Spruce Falls Power and Paper Company for 40 years. Upon retiring, he moved West in order to be close to family. The family would like to thank the staff at Terraceview for their care and support. He thought of you as an extended family and called the place home. We are sure he will be missed for his good humour and cheerful disposition. We would also like to thank Dr. Linton for his care. A private Celebration Of Life will be held in Rycroft, Alberta at a date yet to be determined.

Forever in our hearts
Hannah passed away on October 12, 2013 at Clarke’s Beach Newfoundland and Labrador at the age of 95. She was born in Gunzenhausen, Germany on May 16, 1918 to Dr. Josef and Lily Wolff. She married the late Warrant Officer Charles John Hewson and served with distinction in the British Army during World War II, being decorated four times. Her family immigrated to Canada in 1957 and lived in Kitimat, BC. Hannah was a children’s nurse before the war and taught special-needs children in Kitimat. She retired to Victoria, BC and subsequently resided in Aylmer, Quebec and Carbonear and Bay Roberts, Newfoundland and Labrador. Hannah was an avid reader and bridge player and a keen follower of current events. She enjoyed volunteer activities and received a citation for her work at the Commonwealth Games in Victoria in 1994. She liked meeting interesting people and travelled extensively as late as her 90th year. Hannah was predeceased by her sister Ruth and brother Eli. She is survived by sons Michael (Donna Doyle) residing in Bay Roberts and John (the late Peggy Spencer) residing in Burnaby BC. She will be missed by the Stewarts (her Ontario family) and by the Groves family in the UK. Also left to celebrate her life are her Newfoundland families, the Doyles and the LeShanes, and family and friends worldwide. In accordance with Hannah’s wishes, cremation has taken place and her ashes will be scattered at sea.

Arthur E. Pilkington
Art passed away peacefully at home attended by his loving wife Jenny. He moved from Ontario to Kitimat in 1974 where he worked as a talented tinsmith at Eurocan Pulp and Paper. Always a gentle soul, he loved the outdoors. Art never lost his sense of humour. He will be missed by his family and many fine friends. Art leaves behind his sister Dorothy and many sisters and brothers-in-law and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his two brothers. Much appreciated thanks go to Drs. Scully and Kay, Home Support, and Home Care nurses who made him comfortable in his final year. Always in our mind; Never forgotten

Materials to be burned will be restricted to clean, untreated and unpainted wood; cardboard; and paper. The maximum volume of these materials to be burned on a monthly basis will be 50 m3. The operating period for this facility will be 4 hours/day, on average 3 days/week subject to suitability of venting conditions. Ash will be buried in the burn pit. Winter tires save lives and money (NC)—Feel that cold air? It won’t be long now until we’re all dealing with sub-zero temperatures and wind chill that takes your breath away. While we can all agree that the prospect of winter can be pretty miserable, being prepared and taking the necessary precautions in advance of the ice and snow is ideal. And one of the best ways of doing this is by switching to winter tires. But according to recent Canadian Tire survey, a majority of drivers in Ontario, the Prairies and British Columbia choose not to install winter tires, mistakenly believing that all-season tires offer adequate safety. The evidence says otherwise. In winter-condition tests, Transport Canada and the Rubber Association of Canada found that stopping was 30 to 40 per cent longer with all-season compared to winter tires. In cornering, vehicles with all-season tires went off the testing track at speeds of only 40 to 50 km/h, while the vehicles equipped with winter tires had no problem. The results were consistent with front-, rear- and all-wheel vehicles. The experts from Desjardins General Insurance (DGI) agree that win-

ter tires are designed to save lives. “What’s interesting is that many people who live in snow-belt regions across the country recognize the need for them,” said DGI spokesperson Joe Daly. “But some drivers in urban regions don’t see the need to switch. The fact is we’ve all experienced those icy mornings when you’re rushing to work or school and the salt trucks just haven’t made it to your neighbourhood yet. These conditions are much more dangerous than just plain snow and having the right tires can keep every one safe.” The reason why these tires are the most effective at preventing accidents is because they have deeper, specially-designed treads and are made of innovative rubber compounds that are softer and more pliant. This allows them to perform better on ice, snow and slush, but also in both dry and wet conditions when the temperature dips below 7C. Daly also suggests that it’s also important to keep an eye on your tires’ air pressure. “Overnight temperatures can drop from 5˚ to –15˚ and this rapid reduction can zap the air out of you tires by as much as 4 psi. An underinflated tire can be quite dangerous, so
it’s important to keep tracking your tire pressure.” Having a safe winter is a great reason to equip your car with the best tires. Transport Canada suggests that “winter tires marked with the pictograph of a peaked mountain with a snowflake meet specific snow traction performance requirements, and have been designed specifically for use in
winter conditions.” Another incentive is that some insurance companies like DGI will reward their clients who use winter tires with a discount on their auto insurance. Understand your brakes: If your car is equipped with an anti-lock braking system (ABS), hit the brakes and let the system work for you: your ABS will pump the brakes

Drivers reminded to adjust headrests (NC)—While buckling seatbelts is second nature when getting into a car—how many of us think to adjust the headrest? Reports show that headrests are one of the most overlooked safety features in motor vehicles today and many don’t realize the important role they play in preventing neck, brain and spinal cord related injuries. “Headrests are designed to work alongside the seatbelt so that when an accident occurs it prevents the head from twisting backwards, which subsequently results in whiplash,” explains Mauro Convertini, an insurance and claims expert at Aviva Canada. “Drivers can
sustain an injury from an incorrectly adjusted headrest even at speeds as low as 15 kilometres per hour— the same speed as the average bicycle.” According to an Insurance Bureau of Canada study, only 14 per cent of drivers on the road have their headrest in the proper position. And whiplash being the most common soft tissue injury incurred during auto collisions underlines the importance for all passengers to ensure their headrest is adjusted properly. Aviva’s Convertini recommends that Canadian drivers follow three simple steps in order to prevent injuries associated with improper headrest

The Coastal Business Resource Centre (CBRC), located in the old TriCorp building on 2nd Avenue West, was packed on Oct. 17 for an open house to introduce both the facility and the many businesses that call it home. “We only have one
office left to rent to someone. There are 12 offices, but some tenants are sharing space so there are actually 23 companies renting space here,” said Geoff Greenwell of Greenwell Asset Management, the managers of the building, noting not everyone was able to be a part of the CBRC. “We tried to bring in companies that are complimentary to each other and have the skill set that will be necessary in the near future as more proj-

VICTORIA - The provincial executive of the NDP has proposed May 25, 2014 for a leadership vote to select a replacement for Adrian Dix. The party executive picked the date, almost exactly three years before the next scheduled B.C. election, to avoid municipal elections set for next fall and a federal election expected in 2015. That is to make it more practical for municipal politicians and MPs to consider whether they want to jump to provincial politics. Dix announced in September he would stay on as leader until a successor is chosen, and at the time he said that would take place before the middle of next year. The May vote was picked after discussions with the party’s current MLAs and local constituency presidents, but it still must be approved by the NDP provincial council. No candidate has formally announced, but several are considering a run. They include veteran Port Coquitlam MLA Mike Farnworth, who finished second to Dix in 2011, and caucus newcomers Judy Darcy, George Heyman and David Eby, all of whom represent Vancouver constituencies. Vancouver Island MLA Rob Fleming and Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen have also said they are weighing their chances. Juan de Fuca MLA John Horgan, who finished third behind Dix in the 2011 vote, announced last week he will not make another run for the top job. Horgan said he wants to see a new generation of leadership get the attention of members after the party’s upset loss in the May 2013 election. The B.C. NDP’s next party convention is set for Nov. 15-17 in Vancouver.
