A 40-year-old Merville man was among three who died in last Thursday’s plane crash. Frederick Gerald Cecil Wiley of Merville was a passenger on the floatplane which hit the hillside on West Cracroft Island. According to the BC Coroner’s Service, Wiley died on impact along with pilot Kevin Williams, 42, of Lake Country, and passenger Norman Slavik, 59, of White Rock. The two passengers both worked in the forestry industry. Wiley owned Courtenay-based Cold Stone Logging while Slavik was a forestry consultant. On the fateful morning of the crash, Williams flew the Air Cab Cessna 185 from its home base at Coal Harbour to Port McNeill to pick up Wiley and Slavik. Then they proceeded south to a logging operation on West Cracroft where the plane crashed near Potts Lagoon. Witnesses saw the plane circle the landing area before the crash. Several people were quickly on scene but there was nothing they could do for the men. Continued on Pg. 3

Crash: Difficult recovery operations becoming far more frequent, says SAR Continued from Pg. 1

“This last crash was in a very remote area and required specialized skills to perform a safe recovery.” At the scene the next morning, the volunteers were confronted with a plane in dense forest and the possibility fuel was still on board, along with other hazards. “Small aircraft made of aluminium often shred on impact and we are faced with a pile of razor blades to work around,” s aid Cromer. “Not accounting for the tree hazards and fuel/explosion issues…recoveries from aircraft are one

The floatplane crashed into fairly dense forest and came to rest vertically. As a result, volunteers from Campbell River Search and Rescue were called to help remove the bodies. “These types of calls are sadly becoming more frequent for our group. We have attended numerous plane crashes in the last few years and dealing with the terrain and the logistics of recovering subjects is the hardest part,” said search manager Grant Cromer in a news release.

of the most dangerous things we do.” The plane was in a precarious location and access to the cabin was difficult. Two volunteers cut away the trees and branch limbs while another pair – a machinist and millwright by trade – were able to determine what parts of the plane to cut off in order to safely access the cabin in order to remove the bodies. The accident remains under investigation. It was the fourth fatality that search and rescue volunteers had to deal with four days.

On Oct. 21, members helped remove the body of a logger who died following an accident near Port McNeill. “No one likes to get the call that we are on the way to recover a deceased subject, but we all do it knowing that those people deserve an opportunity to be brought back so loved ones can find some closure,” Cromer said. The plane crash remains under investigation by the Transportation Safety Board. The Cessna was brought to Campbell River to be examined.

Zombies were out in full force at Willow Point Park on Sunday for the annual Zombie Run. Runners over a 3 or 5 km. course had to avoid the undead along the route where they sometimes lay in wait in the middle of the trail (pretending to be ‘dead’) and then chased down their victims to capture their velcro flags. Sometimes (middle picture) they turned on each other when they got impatient waiting for live victims. But there were many runners coming through in waves. Sunny skies and warm winds didn’t see to deter the undead as they took advantage of the situation to take revenge on the living.

K E Court orders woman to stay away BOO2X3 SAL from boyfriend who has special needs St. Peter’s Anglican Church

228 South Dogwood St.

Paul Rudan Campbell RiveR miRRoR

A woman has been ordered to have no contact with her boyfriend, who has special needs, after slapping him. Ta n y a We r k l a n d pleaded guilty to assault and breach of a court order Oct. 21, in Campbell River provincial court. The charges stem from an incident that occurred on Oct. 10. According to Crown prosecutor Adrienne Venturini, the man was walking to work along Dogwood Street

and had intended to meet Werkland. However, when she was late, he continued on his way, not wanting to miss the Quadra ferry. Werkland though drove to the ferry terminal and confronted him. A witness heard Werkland yelling and screaming, and then saw her slap him across the face. The man’s glasses went flying and then Werkland grabbed him by the jacket just as a woman stepped in between the two. Police were called and Werkland, who is

known to authorities, was arrested. During her arrest she told the officer, “I don’t know what the problem is, I only slapped him across the face.” She was later released from custody on a promise to appear in court and on the condition that she have no contact with her boyfriend. But shortly after her release, she returned to his residence. When he refused to let her in, police were called and Werkland was arrested for the second time that day. She’s been in custody

since then. According to Venturini, Werkland is very controlling of her former boyfriend and he’s “somewhat vulnerable.” Venturini also told the court that further charges are pending against Werkland who was also phoning the man since being jailed. The court also heard that Werkland has addiction issues and has been under stress while going through a trial to regain custody of her child. She told the judge she wants to get back together with her boyfriend.

Microsoft isn’t that helpful Pay no attention to the man on the phone who claims to be from Microsoft. Campbell River RCMP are warning the public about another phone scam currently making the rounds of the 250 area code. This time the caller says they are from Microsoft and have detected a virus on your computer. They offer to fix the problem at no charge provided the computer owner downloads a specific program.

Dealing with grief and loss Campbell River United Church hosts “Writing Through Grief and Loss: A Journaling Workshop” on Saturday. This workshop will be led by Ray McGinnis, the author of Writing the Sacred: A Psalm-inspired Path to Appreciating and Writing Sacred Poetry. No writing experience is necessary – the setting is confidential and supportive. The workshop takes place from 1-3:30 p.m. at 415 Pinecrest Rd. The cost of the workshop is $15. FMI call 250-286-0431.

ELECTRIC HEAT PUMPS 1x2

What the software does is allow the scammer to remotely access your computer and all its files. “Allowing these people to take control of your computer is a very foolish idea,” says RCMP Sgt. Terry Deley. “These

people will search the files on your computer for your personal information and install malicious programs on your computer, which they will use to scam you. “They may even use your computer to com-

mit other cybercrimes, which will then be traced back to you.” The solution, he adds, is easy: Just hang up. Microsoft does not call computer users and offers to fix non-existent problems.

Our View

Plenty of damage from ongoing Senate scandal The ongoing Senate scandal has certainly done its share of damage — to the prime minister, the Conservative Party, the institution of the Senate and politicians in general. The damage may not spread past that but it is significant and it may be We say: Nothing group, lasting. done to change The Senate is certainly at its low point. It has never been popular with culture of Canadians, being seen as a repository entitlement for bagmen, party hacks and failed politicians. While a few individual senators have done important and significant work, as a whole the institution does little

of lasting importance. Now it has clearly been shown that many senators, and this goes far beyond Mike Duffy, Pamela Wallin and Patrick Brazeau, have had their hands in the cookie jar. Even when they get caught, the Senate and indeed the prime minister do little or nothing to change the culture of entitlement, which is widespread through the federal government. It isn’t just politicians who feel they are entitled to benefits that most other Canadians don’t get. Public servants have clauses in their contracts relating to sick leave, indexed pensions, severance and extended health care that most others can only dream of. The prime minister first took office in 2006 on a pledge

to reform the Senate. It is now clear he has no idea of how to do so. A court decision in Quebec has basically ruled all his reform ideas cannot be implemented, and the court decision implies that the Senate will never be abolished, unless most provinces agree. Even if, in the court of public opinion, Stephen Harper is cleared of direct knowledge of off-the-books payments to senators, the public won’t soon forget that he appointed these three senators, and that he campaigned vigorously on Senate reform. As for the Conservative Party, in the next election its fortunes are totally tied to Harper. If he falters, so does the party. It has no plan B. – Black Press

Giving men a second chance The colder weather we’ve been having calls for snuggly wool sweaters, toasty warm jackets and hand knit scarves made with TLC to keep the chill at bay. Unfortunately many of the clients at Second Chance Recovery House often arrive without those things, so donations are greatly needed. New or clean, gently used winter coats, vests, sweaters, toques, gloves, scarves and slippers can be dropped off at 647 Birch St or phone 250-830-1103 to arrange for pick up. Second Chance has been helping men end their addictions to alcohol and drugs since 1990. In the past year they helped more than 160 men. Clients can do a 28 or 45 day program, during which the men are introduced to the first three steps and first three traditions of the 12-step recovery program. They also learn about boundaries, life skills, co-dependency, mindfulness, self-esteem, relapse triggers and anger management. The men are required to attend five out-of-house AA or NA meetings in the community as well. They are also connected with Mental Health and Substance Use, dentists, liver and diabetes clinics, Laichwiltach Family Life Society, North Island Survivors’ Healing Society and other counsellors, Legal Aid and the local probation office. Second Chance helps the men find a safe place to live when they finish their 28/45 days. Second Chance is also accepting donations of Christmas gifts at this time. Suggested items include: new shirts, track or sleep pants, hoodies, socks, underwear, razors, deodorant, shaving cream, shampoo, soap, body wash, toothpaste, toothbrushes, slippers, wallets, coffee shop gift cards, gum, nail clippers, chocolate, playing cards, travel coffee mugs, back packs, mini flashlights, crossword/find a word/Sudoku books and pocket calendars/daytimers.

The perils of Canada’s entitlement state

Tom Fletcher B.C. Views

With the B.C. and federal governments once again struggling to climb out of deep operating deficits, it’s a good time for the release of Mark Milke’s book Tax Me, I’m Canadian. An update of the same title published 12 years ago, the book retains the history of taxes in Canada, detailing how Canada’s tax system was initially built to mimic the United States system in the late 19th century. Beyond the history, it is mostly new material. Included are chapters on the global meltdown of 2009, the surge of pension liabilities as the baby boomers retire and the flawed logic behind the “Occupy” and “Idle No More” protests. Some readers will immediately note that Milke works for the Fraser Institute and was previously B.C. director of the

Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation. But the book is not just an argument for cutting taxes. It also dismantles persistent myths that income taxes are illegal, and launches a broadside on what Milke calls “Canada’s corporate welfare carnival.” Many people will be able to identify some top names in the government subsidy game: Bombardier, General Motors, even poor old Rolls Royce Canada. Some will also be well aware that our supposedly tight-fisted Conservative federal government has continued to pour out “regional development” and other funds to every part of the country. But I did not know that Industry Canada grants were handed out to pizza parlours (including the remote pizzastarved village of Kamloops), or to help open gas stations or convenience stores

in Kelowna, Vernon and Chilliwack. Milke makes a useful point for B.C. about royalty rates for timber, natural gas and other resources. They are resource rents, and if they are too high the tenants will move out. Reducing them isn’t a subsidy, especially if it leads to big revenue gains as B.C.’s unconventional shale gas incentives have done. On the Occupy movement: The infamous “one per cent,” who in Canada earn $250,000 a year or more, earned 10 per cent of all income and paid 20 per cent of all taxes in 2010. The bottom 73 per cent of tax filers paid just 17 per cent of all taxes. About a third paid no tax at all. On Idle No More: When Attawapiskat Chief Teresa Spence played to the Ottawa media with her hunger strike,

former Liberal leader Bob Rae suggested a nearby diamond mine should share more revenue. On public sector pensions: Milke notes that historically, public employees traded higher wages for better benefits and job security. Now their wages are generally higher, and taxpayers have to cover their personal pension contributions (as a portion of those wages) as well as the employer contributions, plus the “defined benefit” payout, which has to be subsidized far beyond what the pension fund can support. The recent B.C. political crisis over adoption of the harmonized sales tax showed that there is too much emotion and too little knowledge about how taxes work. This book is a step towards addressing that.

cona Regional District board meeting. The pair, who work for the B.C. Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, said they studied the Cortes Official Community Plan and could not see any reason why the regional district would not approve the re-zoning. “It was quite apparent all the requirements from various pieces of legislation had been met,” said Mayser, the manager of authorizations for the West Coast. “The decision to approve was thoroughly consistent with the Official Community Plan objectives.” Mayser cited portions

of the plan that call for the regional district to support the economic well-being of coastal First Nations and he found the area in question, Squirrel Cove, to be an area suitable for developing marine activities. Manna said there was no question in the province’s mind what the right answer was. “This is a really significant economic opportunity for the Klahoose so it would be really unthinkable for anything other than an offer of tenure,” Manna said. Tenure allows for a lease or licence of occupation on the site. But Gerald Whalley, director for Area A, who along with Area D Director Brenda Leigh, voted

against the re-zoning for the marina, said that’s only one part of the Official Community Plan. “You stressed you placed a heavy reliance on the OCP in making your decision,” Whalley said. “I’d like to respectfully suggest you made an error in your interpretation of what the OCP says.” Whalley said that while the plan does promote economic development for First Nations, it also rules against disrupting the rural character of an area. “It doesn’t mean one of those clauses are more important than the other,” Whalley said. “I see it as ‘yes the Klahoose should do economic development in a place

where it does not disrupt the rural character of the environment.’” Leigh took exception to the fact that Mayser and Manna were questioning a regional district decision. “Our decision stands and we can’t change our decision unless the applicants re-apply and another public hearing is held,” Leigh said. “Now they’re sitting there with a tenure and they don’t have a re-zoning. What are they going to do? We made a decision in good faith and here Victoria is trying to overrule us. I won’t stand for this anymore.” Jim Abram, director for Quadra Island, said the process is flawed when the province makes their

decision to offer tenure before local government makes a decision on the re-zoning. Noba Anderson, director for Cortes Island, said while she was not happy with the electoral regional directors’ decision to deny the re-zoning, she did agree with the board that tenure should not come before the re-zoning process is complete. “I’m really grateful for the decision you made, I think it puts us in an awkward situation as a board but I’m thankful for the decision,” Anderson said. Board chair Ted Lewis agreed. “It undermines the credibility of the board, it undermines the credibil-

ity of this organization, it undermines the credibility of the province,” Lewis said when the two governments are working against each other. Ab r a m s e c o n d e d Anderson’s opinion that Mayser and Manna created an uncomfortable situation for the board. “You did put us in a very awkward situation but I appreciate the fact you have come here today to try and find a solution. Whether there is one or not – I don’t know – but you’re trying,” Abram said. Miles said his ultimate goal was to get the regional district to reconsider. “Ideally, I guess I was hoping after explaining the reasons of the deci-

sion and the economic impact on a number of parties I would hope the re-zoning would be re-considered and barring that, see if other options could be considered,” Miles said. “It’s not a good situation and not one we would allow. We hope you can come back with some recommendations of your own to resolve this. Ideally, governments at all levels should work together.” Board chair Ted Lewis got the last word in, to wrap up the turn of events. “It undermines the credibility of the board, it undermines the credibility of this organization, it undermines the credibility of the province,” Lewis said.

Have a safe Oct. 31, Mounties say T he RCMP wants everyone to have a fabulous Halloween, and they’re also passing along these safety reminders: n Wear makeup instead of a mask. This will allow you to see and be aware of everything going on around you while walking house to house. n Wear reflective clothing. n Wear sure your costume does not drag on the ground so you don’t trip.

n Wear comfortable shoes, even if they don’t go with your costume. n It is safer to carry flexible props (e.g. magic wands, swords). n Carry a flashlight so you can see where you are going. n Stay in familiar neighborhoods. n Stay on the sidewalk. If there is no sidewalk, walk on the left side of the road facing traffic. n Obey traffic signals and give traffic the right of way.

n Only approach houses that have the outside lights turned on. n Stay away from pets you don’t know. n Trick-or-treat in groups. And now for the parents: n Discuss with your children what they should do to call home in case of emergency. n If your children go on their own, be sure they wear a watch, preferably one that can be read in the dark. n If you buy a cos-

tume, look for one made of flame retardant material. n Older children should know where to reach you and when to be home. n Although tampering is rare, tell children to bring the candy home to be inspected before consuming anything. Look at the wrapping carefully and toss out anything that looks suspect. n Make sure your yard is clear of such things as ladders, hoses, dog leashes and flower pots

Island 9-1-1 last year, said the organization also had an increase in its 2012 in order to fulfil the wage hikes in the RCMP contract, which was out of the control of 9-1-1. In the meantime, the Union of BC Municipalities is examining issues surrounding possibly introducing a provincewide call answer levy to support and improve 9-1-1 services across B.C.

North Island 9-1-1 Corporation has settled on a seven per cent tax increase to the Strathcona Regional District in its provisional budget. Coun. Larry Samson broke the news to the regional district board at its meeting Thursday afternoon. He said the seven

Strathcona Food Security Project seeks input Do you care about food? North Island College and the Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA) are looking for input on food security in the Strathcona Region this fall with a public survey and a series of community conversations. Food security is when everyone has access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food that meets

their food preferences, and is produced sustainably. “ The Strathcona Food Security Project is focussed on finding out what strengths we have in our area, as well as the challenges that we face,” says Cynthia Bendickson, Project Coordinator. “We want to find out what people think about their access to food and what we as a community

want to see happen in the future.” The results of the survey and the community conversations will be used to produce an Action Plan to address food security in the Strathcona Region. Community conversations will be taking place in Zeballos on Nov. 6, Quadra Island on Nov. 13, Sayward on Nov. 16, Gold River on Nov. 21,

Cortes Island on Nov. 23, and Campbell River on Dec. 3. To access the survey and to find out more about the community conversations, visit the project blog at www. strathconafoodsecurity. wordpress.com, or contact Cynthia Bendickson at cbendickson@gmail. com or (250) 202-1320. Surveys are also available at local libraries in the Strathcona Region.

It ain’t over till you hear Danny Boy

Legendary singer John McDermott plays the Tidemark this Friday

JM: (His) place is like a summer cottage. It’s been turned into a public place and his wife wants a public museum. It’s just a big cottage and it’s not as private as the public thinks – there are neighbours. The main house is massive…it was beautiful. Q: Twenty-five albums in 20 years, pretty prolific for a guy unsure about embarking on a music career. JM: Thirty-two albums! The website is wrong and there’s two more on the way.

he Tidemark stage is along way from the Toronto Sun circulation department. And the actual distance – about 3,500 km as the crow flies – is a good representation of John McDermott’s long career in the music business. The Canadian tenor – whose past career was in the newspaper industry – is celebrating his 20th anniversary on stage and this Friday the North American tour stops by Campbell River’s Tidemark Theatre. The Mirror recently caught up with McDermott, 58, who took a break from yet another recording session to answer a few questions: Q: How many shows in 20 years? John McDermott: In 199…(pauses to recall) 8, we did 262 shows in one year. We left no one unaffected (laughs). Now its about 75 to 100 a year. Q: A moment on stage you’ll never forget? JM: Wow, too many. But in 1994, at one of my first shows, at the Royal Alex in Toronto, we sold out and my Mom and Dad were coming. However, my Dad fell before the show and needed 14 stitches in his head. I didn’t know anything about it because the word went out: “Don’t tell McDermott!” Anyway, the hospital wanted to keep Dad in for observation. He told the nurse, “I don’t think so,” got off the gurney and said to Mom, “You can stay here or you can come with me.” So they came back to the show and when I introduced both of them, he stood up and his head was wrapped in bandages. I thought, “What the hell?” Afterwards, at the

Q: Is there a song your audience demands at each and every concert? JM: Danny Boy, no question. I ain’t gettin’ out of the building till I sing Danny Boy. I learned to give them what they want, not what you think they want, and I don’t see any downside to that at all. Q: Where will you be singing on Remembrance Day? JM: I will be at the Sunnybrook Veteran’s Hospital in Toronto. Q: Any predictions for your Maple Leafs this

season? JM: So cruel! That’s such a cruel question. I’m pulling for the Red Sox in the World Series and the Leafs to make the second round (of playoffs) after that. It’s anybody’s game after that! n John McDermott’s 20th anniversary tour comes to the Tidemark Theatre on Friday, Nov. 1, 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $47.50, plus taxes and fees, available at the box office or by calling 250287-7465.

reception, there was still a blood trickle down the back of his neck. That’s a real memorable moment. Q: Who did you first sing to? JM: I remember school in Scotland when I was seven. We had a competition. I was going to do a Beatles tune, but I sang Scottish Soldier and won a Lego set. Q: You sang at the funeral service for your friend Ted Kennedy. The rest of us are wondering, what is the Kennedy Compound like?

Best Stand-Up. Which to many, is no surprise: “one of this country’s sharpest wits” according to the Montreal Gazette and “wickedly funny” writes the Halifax Chronicle Herald; and in the Globe and Mail, “Be it resolved that whipsmart Canadian comic Steve Patterson, host of the hilarious CBC radio show The Debaters, is one funny fellow.” And finally, “If degrees were granted in the study of humour, he would hold a PhD.” - HERE. In November, Patterson begins the third leg of a national tour with his 90-minute one man show - “This Is Not Debatable!” With his hallmark gift for capturing a funny turn of phrase, he gleefully seizes the opportunity to express opinions he doesn’t get to voice as moderator of The Debaters, throwing in a couple of original satirical songs to boot. A full throttle, pedal to the metal ride. Reserved seating tickets for Steve Patterson - “This Is Not Debatable!” are $42 (tax and facility fees included, handling charges may apply), and are available at the Tidemark box

The Townsend’s big-eared bat is unmistakable with it’s enormous ears.

and buff colored underneath. Their ears can be laid back reaching halfway down their backs. When hibernating

or roosting, these bats have the ability to curl up their ears and then uncurl and extend them forwards when in flight.

Like all bats, they have fine membranes that are attached to elongated forearm and finger bones. Others connect the back legs and tail. In addition to providing them with flight, the hooks on their wrists and claws on their feet help them groom their fur and gives them the ability to crawl on the ground. All bats have remarkable hearing which makes them formidable night time hunters, they use echo location to pin point their food. They are able to produce a sound in their larynx

that is propelled out through the nose and mouth. This sound bounces off prey or other obstacles and by analysing the echo that returns they can determine if the object is prey or predator. Bats are fairly rare visitors to Mountainaire Avian Rescue Society. This year we were fortunate to rescue a Townsend’s bat which was found outside a school in Royston. Due to the location and number of students the bat was rescued once the school was closed. It did not survive.

MANAGING YOUR MONEY Cascading life insurance – it’s 4x10 for the kids Ken Garraway CFP

Senior Financial Consultant

As a parent or grandparent, you want to pass your wealth to your children or grandchildren in ways that are the most effective and useful to them – and the most tax-efficient way. By purchasing a whole life or universal life policy on the life of your child or grandchild, you can invest money on a taxdeferred basis inside the life insurance policy and guarantee the insurability of your child or grandchild. As well the policy is transferred tax free and outside the grandparents’ estate to the child or grandchild.

or as collateral for a loan. Each type has its own issues and taxation.

or collateralization of the CSV. Each type has its own issues and taxation

The policy also guarantees the child’s insurability for the amount purchased and is under the control of the parent or grandparent during their lifetime.

The policy continues to grow and when the child is 65, the CSV of $915,973 could provide the option of additional source of funding in retirement either through withdrawal, policy loan or collateralization.

Here’s a specific example of creating a cascading effect of wealth through life insurance: You’re a grandparent, age 60, and you purchase a 20-pay whole life participating policy on the life of your 5-year old grandson with an initial face amount of $500,000. The annual premium with maximum allowable deposit is $6,865 a year. The CSV at age 25 is $ 175,1141 and the death benefit is $1,163,9301.

Cascading your wealth to next generations is both a loving and a financiallysupportive gesture. Life insurance is one way. There are others. Talk to your professional advisor about the best choices for your situation.

Managing Managing Your Your MOney MOney

In addition, while you’re alive and contributing to a permanent life insurance policy, the cash surrender value (CSV), grows as you contribute – for their needs later to buy a house or fund an education after your death. The child can access the CSV of the policy in three ways: withdrawals, policy loans

At age 80, you transfer policy ownership to your 25-year old grandchild, tax free, who can use the policy’s CSV as an additional asset that can be either accessed through a policy withdrawal, a policy loan

This is a life insurance policy illustration with values that are not guaranteed. The CSV and death benefits are subject to market fluctuations and may be different than the values illustrated. The CSV and death benefit are based on a Canada Life Wealth Achiever – Max 20-insurance illustration as of August 29, 2013.

The 3rd eldest child of Mary and Wasyl Liznick, William grew up on the farm with a great love for all animals. He served during WWII aboard HMCS Prince Robert, on an anti aircraft ship as Orlicon Gunner After the war he studied electronics and married his sweetheart Catherine Philliban. Together they built a lovely home surrounded by colorfull flowers and shrubs. He rescued needy animals so we always had such exotic pets, such as a great horned owl, a flying squirrel and even a bear cub. He worked for Abitibi Pulp and Paper for 25 years before moving to Campbell River, British Columbia, where he was employed as s paper machine electrician for Crown Zellerbach. He retired at 65 to enjoy hobby farming, fishing and teaching his much loved grandchildren how to plant vegetable gardens. He was a kind and generous man who always gave of his time and money to help friends family and strangers. When it came to helping someone in need he would reach into those deep pockets and hand out $20’s and $50’s like they grew on his fruit trees. He accepted Jesus and was baptized while in hospital. He spent the last 7 years at Yucalta Lodge. We loved, respected and will sorely miss him. To quote his son Brian : “ William Colin Liznick was a hard working father who loved the outdoors; gardening being his most favorite pastime. If there was a seed to plant he would do it and do it well. His gardens were always full of interesting and sometimes exotic plants which grew so easily for him. Regular outdoor excursions were always a treat for Elizabeth, and me. He taught us from our youth how to ice fish, hunt, ski , build a campfire, roast marshmallows and appreciate the fall colours. He never demanded much of us but if we strayed we soon found out. I was privileged to follow his career choice and enjoyed years working side by side with him as an Electrician. Hopefully we did not disappoint him. He leaves behind brothers John, and Danny, sisters, Anne and Rose, daughter Elizabeth and son Brian as well as four granddaughters, Noni, Molly, Amy and Breanne and nine great-grandchildren, Chloe, Lydia, Eden, Seth, Kael, Kohra, Hayden, Lyly and Sofia. Predeceased by his wife Catherine, brothers George, Peter, Harry and sister Julia. His memory will always be in our hearts and our creator’s book of remembrance. Sleep well Dad, until we meet again in Paradise. Thanks to all the staff at Yucalta who treated him like their own family with such love, understanding and wisdom. They called him Papa and gave him lots of hugs and kisses. We can never express how much your care and expertise meant. A service will be held at Yucalta Lodge on Sunday, Oct 27, 2013 at 2:00pm.

Wolves snap up victory in home tourney

Carihi goes on the offensive during their round robin game against Nanaimo.

OOPS Sor r y!

imberline settled for silver in its last two tournaments but made it to gold at home. The Wolves placed first in a senior girls volleyball tournament they hosted at the Timberline gymnasium Friday and Saturday. Crosstown rivals Carihi Tyees came out of the 12-team tournament tied for seventh with D.W. Poppy. In round robin play, Timberline beat Claremont 25-11; 25-15 and DW Poppy 25-13; 25-14. In pool play, all the girls played well with Sarah Chase leading the team in kills. Both setters, Tommi Corder and Nicole Herbert, also put in highlight performances, their coach, Terry Philp said. Winning the pool gave us a bye into the quarter finals. Meanwhile, Carihi placed second in their pool, beating Woodlands 22-25; 25-9; and 15-9 and losing to Nanaimo 16-25; 21-25. Carihi then met Mark Isfeld in their first cross-over game and beat them 19-25; 25-18; 15-9. This meant Carihi would be meeting their crosstown rivals in the quarter final in which timberline beat them in straight sets, 25-14; 25-18. “This was a fun match as the girls all know each other and the Chase sisters were on two different sides of the net,” Philp said. “Carihi pushed us better than anyone else had done thus far in the tournament.” Timberline’s next match was the semi-final. Somehow, the number nine seed in the tournament, Claremont, had managed to upset a top seed and land in the semi-final. Once again, Timberline won in straight sets. “Blockers Farryn Elhorn, Ana Christensen and Kaitlyn Herbert really sealed off the net,” Philp said. “Tough serving from Brooklyn Reesor and some great attacks by Megan Turko helped lead us to a fairly onesided result. We won 25-10; 25-7.” The other semi-final featured two strong contenders, defending bronze medalists, Nanaimo and the number four-ranked AA in the province, Cedar. It was a very strong match that went three sets, with

Cedar prevailing. “In the final, we were caught off guard by fast play as we hadn’t been tested quite enough in our semi-final,” Philp said. “Cedar came out swinging and took the first set 20-25. The gym was packed, but very quiet during that first game. Both teams played great defense and we had some very long rallies.” Hayley Zumkeller was their back row defensive star, leading the team in digs. Pay tribute to volunteer managers Volunteers are often put in the spotlight, for all they do for the community and the organizations that need them the most. They are involved in sport, health, emergency services, faith and community services, environmental organizations etc... and those organizations succeed with the support of their volunteer managers, the back bone of volunteerism, dedicated to the cause, coordinating volunteers and activities and helping non-profit organizations run smoothly. Volunteer Campbell River would like to recognize our local leaders in community engagement, and highlight the work done by local volunteer managers as the non-profit world celebrates International Volunteer Managers Day on Nov. 5. On that day, you can thank them for their dedication to managing volunteer programs and keeping volunteers fully engaged. Show them their hard work and care for the community is appreciated. For more information on volunteering or to partner with the Volunteer Society to strengthen our community, please contact 250287-8111 or email mail@ volunteercr.ca
