The Rimbey Review, Oct. 29, 2013 3

RCMP encourages Halloween safety This week Rimbey RCMP responded to 51 calls for service. Highlights include impaired drivers, oil field theft, sexual assault, criminal harassment, domestic assault, and other criminal matters. Impaired driver charged Your local Mounties arrested and charged another impaired driver this week. After years of education, highway billboards, television and newspaper advertisements, local funerals and just plain old word of mouth, a local 67 year old man from the Gimlet area found out first hand (for the third time in recent years!!) that we are not going to tolerate drunk driving in our community. Early in 2013, Rimbey detachment members reached out to the citizens of this fine community and asked the simple question, “what concerns you in your neighbourhood and what can we do to make it better?”. The overwhelming response was to reduce the number of drunk drivers. One local county councillor said, “I think my biggest concern is being in a crash with an impaired driver on my way home from hockey practice with my children in the car”. So, Rimbey detachment made impaired driving a strategic priority. Since April 1, 2013, Rimbey Detachment has charged 27 impaired drivers! Many others have had their drivers licenses suspended for 24 hours and in some cases up to 30 days for getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol. The costs of impaired driving are just not worth it. Please, make plans ahead of time if you intend to partake in some spirits to have a safe ride home. RCMP deal with trauma Unfortunately, officers dealt with some very concerning matters this week, including sexual assault of a minor, sudden deaths, mental health and other traumatic incidents. Each week, we try to give you a “snap shot” of our week’s highlights in the Police Report, however, we cannot report on many of difficult cases we are involved in. Thankfully, Rimbey has an incredible organization made up of volunteers who assist officers in many of these cases - the Rimbey and District Victim Services Society (VSU). If you or a loved one needs some information on how to deal with

a situation where you have been a victim of crime or abuse, please call VSU at (403) 843-8494. Youth arrested for drug possession Another arrest was made for possession of marihuana when an alert officer noticed a youth impersonating “Spicoli” from the 80’s movie “Fast Times at Ridgemount High”. It is probably safe to say that this young man hasn’t seen that old movie or know that Spicoli crashed a car when he was high but he should have known that you don’t smoke weed and get behind the wheel of a car. The 16-yearold male has been charged with drug possession and had his drivers license suspended. Ladies arrested for shoplifting Two young ladies were arrested and charged with theft after they shoplifted at a local Rimbey store. Copper wire theft being investigated Police are investigating another copper wire theft in the rural area from an oil lease site. RCMP offer Halloween safety tips Soon there will be witches, goblins and superheros descending on Rimbey streets and neighbourhoods for Halloween. The RCMP offers some safety tips to help prepare children for a safe and enjoyable Halloween. - Walk on sidewalks, not in the street. - Don’t hide or cross the street between parked cars. - Wear light-coloured or reflective-type clothing so you are more visible. - Plan your route and share it with your family. If possible, have an adult go with you. - Carry a flashlight to light your way. - Keep away from open fires and candles (costumes can be extremely flammable). - Visit homes that have the porch light on. - Accept treats at the door and never go into a stranger’s house. - Use face paint rather than masks or things that will cover your eyes. Have an adult inspect treats before eating them and don’t eat candy if the package has been already

have been privileged to serve as town councilor for the last three years. Council was presented with several challenges and many tough decisions, leaving our new council with a Årm foundation on which to build. Representing you and the interests of our community has been an experience I would not trade. My opportunity for personal growth was unparalleled. I would like to thank all of you who took the time to vote. Once again we had a great voter turnout. I’m sure that over the last three years it has been challenging to separate the real me from the constant chatter; a heartfelt thank you goes out to those who could see the difference. Thank you, Sheldon, for your strength and fortitude. Thanks to the previous council - Paul, Jack, and Scott - who all have a knack for seeing the brighter side. Congratulations to Rick on your successful bid for mayor, and also to our new council, Jack, Einar, Matt, and Paul. May the next four years prove very rewarding for you and the community you serve. Thank you to Tony and the Town staff, who always made the experience an enjoyable one. A thank you also goes out to Treena at the Rimbey Review, for reporting in an open and honest style. All my best to everyone. Gayle

My kitchen was sunshine bright, made so, not only by the golden shards of light that manage to pierce through my less than sparkling clean dining room window, but by my two granddaughters, who had come to visit. I had sent out the e-mail a few days ago, inviting them to my house to make a kindness basket for someone, filled with cookies, other little trinkets, and, of course, in the empty spots, huge amounts of love. In my mind, where things like this take off with the speed of light, and are not confused in any way with common sense, I pictured a perfect scenario where I would connect; really connect with my Treena Mielke granddaughters. In the On The Other Side process, I would, in an underhanded, sneaky way, teach them how much better it is to give than to receive. I was slightly surprised when it actually happened. I sent out the e-mail, forgot about it, and got back to work. Both moms responded with a resounding ‘yes.’ “Oh, my goodness, I muttered to me, as no one else was even in the vicinity, “now what?” Can I really pull this off? Can I bring these precious little souls into my world and, in the process, create a whole lot more than cookies? “You won’t know until you try,” I answered myself. “So just do it.” It was not a perfect afternoon, at least not in the same way perfection exists in my head. For one thing I seemed to have in my jumbled cupboards where things are supposed to be all neat and tidy but aren’t, only Christmas cookie cutters, and not any Halloween ones. And, I couldn’t seem to find little gifts to fill in the spaces in the baskets that weren’t otherwise to be filled with cookies. And, for another the only ‘kindness’ baskets I

could find seemed huge, and I found myself feeling kind of stingy about how much ‘kindness’ I actually wanted to give away. With all this imperfection going on, it’s amazing what happened. I, who was supposed to be the giver, got the most back. And, as the kitchen clock ticked away the afternoon, and the girls rolled, cut out and decorated their cookies, we truly did make something a whole lot more important than baskets. We made memories. The cookies themselves were a work of art. Each one was unique. Some were paper thin, burned, slightly crispy, some were headless cookie men and some were unidentifiable. But, they came out of grandma’s kitchen and they truly were for all of us, a labour of love. And, as the afternoon wore on it became increasingly clear to me that the less than perfect parts of the time spent with my granddaughters would be filled with unexpected pieces of delight. And somehow in the process of rolling and cutting and decorating cookies, the girls gave me

temporary visiting rights to their own little world. I learned about their music, their friends, their challenges, their likes, their dislikes and that one of them loves tea with honey, and one wanted to know how many cookies she could take for her own lunch. They were so delightful, these girls. I just wanted to hug them, and touch their silky heads for no other reason than just because, but mostly I just listened and was secretly grateful when they turned their music off. The baskets were filled with creativity, imagination and, most importantly, cookies. And when my afternoon guests departed and I was left with sticky counters, clutter and a few broken and burned cookies, I was amazingly pleased with myself. Even smug. Because weirdly enough, I was the benefactor of the lesson I was going to teach my granddaughters. I reflected on that thought as I helped myself to one of the burned, broken cookies on my counter. It was surprisingly delicious!

Syria’s Chemical Weapons: Everybody Wins (Except the Syrians) \“That prize should have been given to me,” joked Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad shortly after the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on 11 October. The guests gathered in his palace in Damascus presumably laughed, out of courtesy to their host, but they all knew that giving up Syria’s chemical weapons hadn’t been Assad’s idea at all. “Since 2003, Syria has demanded that the countries in the region dismantle their weapons of mass destruction, and the chemical weapons were meant to be a bargaining chip in Syria’s hands in exchange for Israel dismantling its nuclear arsenal,” the Syrian president continued. “Today the price (of the bargaining chip) has changed, and we have agreed to give up our chemical weapons to remove the threat of the US attacking us.” Sixty out of a planned hundred OPCW inspectors are already in Syria, and they have made no complaints about a lack of cooperation by Damascus. By the end of this month they will have completed their initial verification visits and confirmed that Syria’s account of its chemical weapons and facilities is accurate and conceals nothing. Syria has 1,000 metric tonnes of toxic chemicals: around 300 tonnes of sulfur mustard, a blis-

Gwynne Dyer Guest Columnist

tering agent and 700 tonnes of the nerve agents sarin and VX. But none of it is “weaponised” (loaded into projectiles), which means that OPCW’s goal of finishing the job by mid-2014 seems feasible. Even if it has to be done in the midst of a civil war. It’s quite clear that Assad did not plan all this. His forces (or somebody else’s) used poison gas in Damascus, though the attack was pointless in military terms. President Barack Obama was trapped by his previous loose talk about an American “red line” into threatening to bomb Syria. And the Russians got Obama off the hook by “persuading” the Syrian leader to renounce his chemical weapons. But what has Assad really lost? “The chemical weapons, which have lost their deterrent value over the past few years, were meant to be used only after Israel used its nuclear weapons,” he says, but it was never a very credible deterrent. Israel’s unstoppable nuclear weapons could annihilate Syria, whereas the efficient Israeli civil defence organisation would have made mass casualties unlikely even in a worst-case Syrian gas attack.

In any case, Syria’s chemical weapons have now lost whatever deterrent value they once had, for Israel has acquired good anti-missile defences that would shoot down most incoming Syrian missiles. Syria actually stopped producing new chemical weapons in 1997, Assad said, because they had lost their military usefulness. After that, they were only a low-value “bargaining chip” to be put on the table in the improbable event of region-wide negotiations on eliminating all weapons of mass destruction. But Assad is a very lucky man. He discovered belatedly that his bargaining chip could be traded for something else: immunity from American attack. So everybody wins. Obama escapes from the new Middle Eastern war that he dreaded. Moscow gets huge diplomatic credit for coming up with the formula that averted that war, and saves its Syrian client as well. Assad regains a measure of respectability by nobly relinquishing his useless chemical weapons. And the OPCW gets the Nobel Peace Prize. The only losers are the Syrian people on both sides of a dreadful civil war, which looks set to drag on indefinitely. Legion has begun poppy campaign By Treena Mielke This year, as in the past, The Royal Canadian Legion, Rimbey Branch No. 36 has joined other Legions throughout the country on a poppy campaign and funds will be used to help worthy recipients. Herb Keith from the Rimbey Legion said the campaign began last Friday with the selling of wreaths. “We will be selling wreaths throughout the town. We all take a section and help out. The poppies came out on Saturday. Keith said little profit is made from the poppy campaign and funds raised go to help veterans and their families, Ponoka Air Cadet, he student poster and literacy contest,

meals on wheels, student bursaires and Rimbey Hospital. The upcoming poppy campaign was launched Oct. 22 by the Honourable Gene Zwozdesky, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The first poppy will be presented to His Honour Colonel (Ret’d) Donald S. Ethell, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, and to other dignitaries in attendance. “Recognized the world over as a symbol of commemoration, the poppy signifies support for our Canadian Forces and their legacy of distinguished service,” said Speaker Zwozdesky. “By affixing poppies to our lapels we honour Canada’s veterans and pay tribute to our nation’s fallen.”

Natural healer teaches new form of energy medicine By Treena Mielke Anyone who visits Brenda Smalley, a certified instructor for Touch for Health, is in for an exciting experience and one which could mean surprisingly wonderful results. Smalley, a registered massage therapist and reflexologist, likes to help people heal their own body. “I do natural healing,” she said. “I don’t do anything with pills.” Smalley is excited about the latest step she has taken in her journey of natural healing which involves teaching and receiving The Bars, a most unique and powerful form of energy medicine. “I felt like it was the next step and I know it works,” she said. The Bars system involves stimulating one of 32 points on the head by touch, thereby encouraging the flow of positive energy. “What happens is we get stuck in what we know and when we do the Bars we open up to all kinds of possibilities. I have had lots of success stories.” While Smalley explains it is important to be in a state of gratitude when participating in this form of energy healing, it can make one’s life even better. “Receiving and learning the Bars will allow so much more to show up for you,” she said. “The Bars has assisted thousands of people to change many aspects of their life, including issues with sleep, health, weight, financial, sex, relationships, anxiety, stress and so much more.” Part of the process of learning The Bars process involves asking such questions as “what are you willing to release that has been keeping you from having what you really want, is your life everything you desire it to be and are you willing to receive more?” Smalley offered a one-day Bars workshop through Ponoka and Rimbey Adult Learning earlier this month. She has another workshop scheduled for Nov. 18 at Rimbey Provincial Building.

Santa’s Annoymous group prepares for season By Treena Mielke With the Christmas season not much more than a few calendar weeks away, Santa’s elves are already hard at work making sure everyone enjoys a happy holiday. The Santa’s Anonymous committee from Alder Flats, Buck Lake and Winfield wants to help the less fortunate families in the area. “The group’s mandate is to help make the Christmas season better for our local families, those who maybe don’t have the means to put a Christmas dinner on the table or buy gifs for their children,’ said committee member Marian Whitby. The group is collecting non-perishable food items, unwrapped gifts and monetary donations throughout the three communities. “There will be donation boxes and tins at a variety of businesses and schools in the area and we would be grateful for any donations you feel would be appropriate,’ said Whitby. Individuals and companies in the area are generous, although the committee ends up purchasing some staples to ensure hampers are stocked with necessary staples such as cereal and flour. Perishable items including a turkey or ham, potatoes, buns and Christmas oranges are added prior to delivery.

The hampers are not only a wonderful treat for Christmas, they are filled with food which should last throughout December, which may be a financially difficult month for some families. Included with the food are basic toiletries such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes and gloves or socks. And tucked away, in the brightly coloured boxes, are gifts for each family member. The Santa’s Anonymous committee does its best to ensure anyone who needs help receives it. Recipients are referred via self-referrals, social agencies, schools and churches. The group encourages anyone who knows of someone who needs extra help to call Louis Gilbertson at 780-682-2388 or Marian Whitby at 780-388-3774 no later than the first week of December. Donation boxes will be picked up around the middle of December. Whitby said recipients of the Santa Anonymous hampers fluctuate each year. “There are always people out there who don’t have enough and that’s where we come in. We are just a few people trying to make things better and brighter. We don’t want to offend anyone. We just want to help. Everything is very confidential,” she added.

This year the event raised $10,013.00 that was gifted to the area of greatest need at the Central Alberta Cancer Center. Over the past four years the event has raised a total of $27,622 that was donated to breast cancer research and the Central Alberta Cancer Center. Teen finds presentation about bullying eye opening By Taylor Snell On Oct. 15, The West Country Outreach School hosted a presentation for all the Wolf Creek School Division’s outreach schools. The Live Different Organization, including a very up beat performance from the band Half Chance Heroes, lit up the faces of everyone in attendance. The stories they told were true to life and demonstrated funny ways of showing kindness and acceptance toward others. The Live Different Organization is a group of young adults from all across Canada who embrace positive change, and believe that kindness changes everything. They travel from coast to coast to talk to teens about how kindness and caring for others can change peoples lives, and that

each person has the ability to make change. Through the duration of the presentation there were may different stories and videos put together by the Live Different crew. Every story touched on many issues people are faced with, and were stories that had meaningful and motivational messages. Every speaker had something new to share, and the message in each life story had something every teen or adult could relate to. The most memorable moment for me happened when I listened to one presenter who talked about her battle in school to always keep up a popular status. To do this, she was mean and bullied this one girl who already had a poor home and family life. The teenage girl who was being bullied

at school, was abused in both mental and physical ways by her father, and had no friends or positive role models in her life to talk to. One day she broke down and no longer felt comfortable going to school. The presenter followed that by saying, “I must have hurt her badly, if she would rather stay at home where she is treated poorly, than at school were she gets bullied by me and my friends”. That really made me think about how important it is to treat others with respect and kindness, because you never know how fast a person can break down. All people go through hard times and maybe that one vicious word or unkind look can push that person over the edge. At one point I looked around at the audience just out of curiosity to see the reaction on people’s faces with the speaker’s heavy words about their past. It surprised me to see that some teens were almost in tears and others showed no emotion at all. To me it’s good to hear others talk about troubled times, because it makes me feel less alone. When I’m in troubled times it’s good to know that my problems won’t last forever if I can just move on and get help, or find another suitable way of coping with stress or sadness. For me, The ‘Live Different’ motivational presentation was an eye opener. It is inspiring to know that these people overcame the problems of their teenage and young adult years and are now doing amazing and wonderful things all across Canada and some parts of the world. Everyone has potential to do great things and make positive change. Problems never last. Just remember that life is a gift and that kindness really does change everything.

Open house and bonspiel kicks off curling season By Treena Mielke Curling season is underway and the Rimbey club is taking a proactive approach to getting more curlers out on the ice. The club has an open house and bonspiel planned for Nov. 1 and 2 with point system scoring, cash prizes, a potluck lunch and free curling on Saturday. “We have our ice in and we are ready

to roll,” said past president Marj Tisdale. “We are hoping to get as many teams as we can. The ice is free for anyone who wants to come out and try on Saturday at 2 p.m.” Every Thursday from Oct. 31 to Dec. 12 from 5 to 7 p.m. there will also be free curling. “There will be supervision at that time and parents and junior league curlers are more than welcome to come out.”

Sturling curling (two-person stick) is also available every Thursday at 12:30 in conjunction with the senior league which begins Oct.31 at 10 a.m. “Sturling curling is a quick game and it’s safer. There is no sweeping. It’s more laid back, but it still gives curlers a chance to get out there and have fun.” Men’s curling will be Mondays, ladies Tuesdays and mixed is Wednesdays. High school students will begin curling

the end of November. This year the curling club contracted Lorne Barker from Strathcona to put in the ice. Barker will do weekly ice maintenance along with club members. Tisdale said it is nice to see curlers who have moved back to Rimbey and retired take up the sport again. However, she is hopeful more families will give it a try. “It is a fun sport and we welcome everyone,” she said.

Correction An article in the Oct. 22 edition of the Rimbey Review titled Bentley arena upgrades are now complete incorrectly stated funding for the arena renovations came from Kraft Hockeyville or any matching grants. The $97,377 used for renovations was cost shared equally by the Town of Bentley and the County of Lacombe. A grant of $16,735 came from Alberta Recycle to cover the cost of matting. The Review apologizes for this error.

Mayan named rookie of the week by SJAHL By Treena Mielke Only weeks after his Grade 12 graduation from Rimbey High School, Travis Mayan is busy making a name for himself as an up and coming player in the Saskatchewan Junior A Hockey League. The 18-year-old was picked up by the Melfort Mustangs earlier this year after being noticed by a Scout when he was playing for the AA Midgets in Sylvan Lake. In a write up on the league’s website, Mayan is referred to as having the potential to be one of the more dangerous players in the league if given a bit more development time. The young player picked up a goal and four assists in three games played recently. The website states he had back to back two point games in Melfort against Battlefords and also made two points when the team traveled to Weyburn. He had an assist

in Estevan, as well and has been on the scoresheet in every game, but one this season. His skill on the ice has earned him league rookie of the week and team player of the month. Mayan said his season is going great. “We have a good team and I’ve been able to play pretty consistently right from the start. It’s taken a few games to get used to everything, but playing with the older guys on the team has really helped the process along.” Being away from home is difficult, he added. “It’s a little tough being far from home, obviously there’s people you miss and just the home life, itself, is tough to leave behind. But being with a good team and in a quiet city like Melfort has been great.” Mayan’s mom, Jody said she is very proud of her son. “He has wanted to do this forever and he is living out his dream.”

Town of Bentley and Ward 4 school board election results see changes By June Norvila After the tabulation of results from the Oct 21 civic election, Bentley town council will see some changes. There were 374 registered voters out of an estimated 754 eligible voters for almost a 50 per cent voter turnout - a very good representation in the eyes of both Returning Officer Cindy Roettger and town Chief Administrative Officer Eliza-

beth Smart, and much higher than most other places. Roettger did say that not all voters voted for all four of the council spots. In the 2010 election the voter turnout was estimated to be about 38 per cent. Unofficial results reported were: in the race for mayor- Lynda HaarstadPetten 217 votes, Joan Dickau 157. Four councilors were declared elected: incum-

bent Butch Howard had 242 votes, Robin Lemay tied with 242, Pam Davey had a close 231, and incumbent Cliff Knutson gathered 172. Newcomers to the scene: Ray Williams garnered 130 votes and Richard Diamond 119. Mayor elect Lynda Haarstad-Petten appreciated the support she received. “Thank you to everyone that supported me in my bid for the mayor’s posi-

tion. For our community, the voter turnout was up which shows us as a council, you truly do care about your community,” she stated. “I hope that I can represent you as well as my forerunner Joan Dickau has – she has left me huge shoes to fill. Congratulations to the elected Council. I believe we will make a great team and can lead our wonderful community into the future. Thank you once again – I am truly looking forward to this next journey in my political career.” Another resident from Bentley elected to a new position is Pamela Hansen who ran for Ward 4 Bentley/Eckville area school trustee on the Wolf Creek Public School Board. Hansen, with 381votes, beat out incumbent Karin Engen from Eckville who had 259 votes. Peter Sutherland received 81. Eligible voters were from the town of Bentley and Ward 4 Lacombe County residents. “I am very excited to have been elected as school trustee and look forward to serving on the board,” states Hansen. “Our school and our children’s education are so important to our communities and to our future. My first plan of business is to get informed by the other trustees on what is going on in the district so I can make informed choices when voting or discussing issues.” The elected officials welcome feedback and input from the community and invite people to contact them. All numbers reported are unofficial.

Some youngsters play hockey year-round By June Norvila

out of Red Deer for the last four years with the Junior Generals team that includes kids from around central Alberta and he plays regular ‘winter season’ hockey in Bentley. This year for the winter season young Kayde is on the combined Bentley/Rimbey Tier 1 Peewee team called the Bentley Peewee A Bruins. He has been used to playing right wing, but this year is playing centre, so that will be a new challenge for him. Their first regular season game is Saturday, October 26 in Red Deer. Kayde has been on skates since he was fiveyears-old. To help the family offset some of the expenses as there is no help with travel, Kayde is collecting empty bottles and cans, is willing to do snow shoveling and other odd jobs. The local Elks club has indicated they will offer some financial aid. There is also a trust account set up in Kayde Budgell’s name at the Bentley Servus Credit Union for others who might like to help out. If for some reason Kayde does not make the trip, any monies collected will be donated to Bentley Minor Hockey, says Dewar. They are aware of at least one other Alberta boy who may be going, but everyone is on their own to get to Frankfurt, Germany.

Not all kids play hockey only during the winter season. Some love it so much they play year-round if they can. That is the case with Bentley’s Kayde Budgell. He lives and breathes hockey. “I like hockey!” says the 11-year-old who says Wayne Gretzky is his hero. He is now working hard towards getting ready for an international hockey trip in April 2014. Back last April, at one of Kayde’s spring hockey tournaments in Calgary, the family was handed an envelope and told to open it in private. Upon opening it they found Kayde had been invited to try out for the Canadian AAA Explorers and thus an international hockey exchange on the recommendation of his coach. Mother Charity Dewar says he was so excited and he said, “No matter what happens - what an honor to be invited!” It was a long wait for the family before the tryouts in Stettler in mid August. In the meantime dad Melvin Budgell and Kayde built a small workout room in the basement of their home and decided on a routine to help keep him in shape and prepare for the trials. When the date came 42 youngsters were there for the weekend from places like Victoria, Fort St John, Boyle, and all over. On Saturday the youngsters NEED A spent 5-8 p.m. on the ice, and 11 hours on the ice, off and on, throughout Check status of Government the day Sunday doing Grants/Assistance each worth intense skills and drills testing they had not wit$5000 or more nessed before. COMMUNITY

Rimbey Girl Guides help out By Treena Mielke Rimbey Girl Guides and Brownies plan to do their part to help out the town in which they live. On Mon. Nov. 4 after school, the girls will gather at the town library to sort through the books that are remaining from the book sale. Spines and covers will be removed from the books which will then be hauled out to the recycle depot. Guide leader Gail Stuart said the community service project is a good one for the girls and will be beneficial to the town and the library. “A lot of people think Guides is just about selling cookies and it is definitely a lot more than that,” she

said. Information on the web states seven million Canadian girls and women have been involved in Guiding in the last 100 years. Throughout its history, Girl Guides of Canada has prepared girls to meet the challenges that they face in their lives head on. Whether it was girls learning to bandage wounds during the First World War or girls today working on their anti-bullying badge, Guiding continually evolves to reflect the needs and interests of contemporary girls and women. Today, Guiding’s innovative programming is helping the next generation of Canadian girls become confident, courageous and resourceful leaders.

GORMLEY Fredrick William April 26, 1949 - Hondo, AB October 17, 2013 - Edmonton, AB MAYNER Mr. John Henry “Jack” Mayner of Rimbey, Alberta passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, October 20, 2013 at the age of 83 years. Jack was born in Rimbey on August 22, 1930 to Henry and Harriet Mayner. He attended school in Blindman Valley and Bluffton. Jack worked on the farm for a while and then went to work at Burns Ranches near Calgary. In April, 1955, he was united in marriage to Margaret Deacon and they resided in Calgary where three of their children were born. In 1959, Jack and Maggie moved back to the Rimbey area to farm, and in the spring of 1961 they moved to the quarter that Jack’s dad had cleared and broke. While living there, they were blessed with their fourth child. In 1965, Jack and Maggie bought the former John Hunt farm near Bluffton, where they resided until they retired from farming in 1978. Jack enjoyed working part time at the Vet Clinic when they moved into Rimbey. In 2006, Maggie passed away and Jack lived in Rimbey for four more years. In April, 2010, he moved to his daughter, Cindy’s home where he enjoyed farm life until his passing. Jack loved sports on TV, yard work, and especially family time. Jack possessed a wonderful sense of humour, and really enjoyed all the family and friend visits. “Jack will be sadly missed by all who knew him, especially his family who loved him dearly.” Jack will be lovingly remembered by his son, Rodney (Ann) Mayner of Bluffton; his two daughters, Jackie (Steve) Kozak of Forshee; and Cindy (Guy) Beaulieu of Rimbey; and his son-in-law, Garnet DuGray of Rimbey; as well as nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren who all meant the world to him. Jack was predeceased by his beloved wife, Maggie; his daughter, Dianne DuGray; his brother, Bob Mayner; and his sister, Iris McClelland.
