Pie-Eyed Teacher Gets Her Just Desserts

Mailbox theft rampant here By MONIQUE TAMMINGA and DAN FERGUSON Aldergrove Star

Parkside Elementary teacher Kim Hardy wore some 90 pies on Thursday, Oct. 24 as her just desserts for the school’s record-breaking Terry Fox Foundation fundraiser. The school of 450 students raised almost $3,000 for the cause and Hardy had pledged that the 90 students who raised over $10 would get to throw a pie plate of whipping cream at her, while those who raised over $100 would get the opportunity to “decorate” her hair.

Boy’s condition worsens as chemotherapy drug isn’t working By MONIQUE TAMMINGA Aldergrove Star

Friends of six-year-old cancer patient Keian Blundell are again asking Langley residents to rally in support of the boy, as things have taken a turn for the worse. Keian’s condition has greatly worsened since the community set a record with a one-day bottle drive to raise funds for his

family in August. “Last week, Keian went into the BC Children’s Hospital clinic for routine bloodwork and it was discovered that the leukemia had returned all throughout his blood again,” said Megan Sedawie Creasy, a friend of the family. “This was devastating news for the family, as it meant that the last resort

chemotherapy drug was not working. In a family meeting, doctors told Keian’s parents Chantal and Ryan that there was nothing more that could be done with Keian’s treatment.” Doctors don’t believe Keian will live much longer. His parents moved with Keian and SEE: Page 4

Langley RCMP are putting out a warning that mailbox theft is rampant right now. Over the last month, neighbourhoods throughout the Langleys have been victimized by break-ins into mailboxes. “This past Monday alone, 18 mailboxes were pried open and the mail items may have been stolen,” said Langley RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Holly Marks. The thefts are happening both in apartment mailboxes and residential community mailboxes, she said. Marks said it really isn’t concentrated in just one area but happening everywhere. Langley RCMP is asking the public to be particularly vigilant and report suspicious people, vehicles or activity in your neighbourhood, especially in close proximity to mailboxes. Langley RCMP Street Enforcement Unit is working closely with Canada Post Postal Inspectors and neighbouring police agencies to address the issue and identify the person(s) responsible. “We recognize mail theft as being a significant problem throughout the Lower Mainland. Langley’s property crime unit is fully engaged in trying to apprehend the offenders,” said Supt. Derek Cooke. “I would strongly encourage Langley residents to ensure they retrieve their mail every afternoon and not allow it to accumulate for a lengthy period of time.” Langley Township council wants to see community mailboxes made more secure and sending that message to Canada Post. Calling Canada Post community mailboxes “inferior” and “poorly designed” councillor Steve Ferguson convinced a majority of Township council to back his campaign for improvements to the design of the grouped-together boxes which have been installed in new residential areas in lieu of house-to-house delivery since 1985. Ferguson said the mailboxes have become easy targets for break-ins. “Mail theft, tampering and vandalism became a problem the day after the [first] community boxes were installed,” Ferguson said. His written resolution, approved by a majority of council on Monday (Oct. 21), asks the post office to “put into place measures to make these community mailboxes secure from forced entry and theft …” and to consider adopting Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles to make the mailboxes less vulnerable. CPTED, which is endorsed by the RCMP and other Canadian police forces, calls for a mix of “target hardening,” high-visibility environmental design, lighting and other measures to discourage criminals. Ferguson told council he has been told the post office is considering steps to make the community boxes more theft-proof. There are more than 20,000 community mailboxes in B.C. serving one in four households.

Aldergrove’s Wall-o-Lanterns a Huge Success

HARRY HUNT PHOTO

Three year old Peyton Yarych helped create some of the 700 jack o’lanterns for the annual Wall-o-Lanterns festival on Saturday at Aldergrove’s Philip Jackman Park. The fundraiser for Langley School District Foundation, hosted by Aldergrove Business Association, featured family entertainers such as Charlotte Diamond and culminated with the grand lighting ceremony that night. The free family-oriented event drew a crowd estimated at 600, and the only downside was some random vandalism the night before when several pumpkins and displays were smashed by a man who was captured by RCMP and taken into custody. The display continues nightly through Halloween.

Sedawie Creasy said Langley has great meaning for the family and she is hoping the community can rally for the Blundells by sending cards and letter of support to Keian at Canucks Place. She is also selling Team Keian bracelets with all proceeds going to the family. Those bracelets can be bought at http://fundrazr.com/ campaigns/4Ziqe. “I would love if Langley would rally together and put up white holiday lights around homes in honour of Keian and his fight. The white lights would symbolize that we are supporting this family and uniting as a community to do so. Keian was diagnosed with leukemia in July 2012. He has undergone radiation treatments, chemotherapy and received a bone marrow transplant from his younger brother Joren, but the cancer has come back twice. Keian began a third round of treatment at the end of July. The money raised by the bottle drive and other fundraisers will help Keian’s parents who have both taken time away from work to spend as much time as they can with their son. Compassionate care EI pays for 35 weeks but for parents in this type of battle with cancer, that just isn’t enough. They have struggled to pay car insurance, she said. Christopher Lakusta volunteered at the annual Scout Apple Day fundrasier at the Fort Langley Cranberry Festival on Saturday, Oct. 12, with the 1st Fort Langley Scout Group. Chris, who turns 25 in November, has been involved with the Scouts Canada organization since September of 1993, when he joined the 1st Aldergrove Scout group, before transferring to the Fort Langley Scouts in 2013. “You can say I’ve been Scouting for 20 years or most of my life, says Chris, who recommends it for all youths. Born in Langley, Chris grew up in Aldergrove, where he attended Parkside Elementary and then Aldergrove Secondary, from which he graduated in

2007. During those school years Chris played baseball, soccer, bowling and participated in track and field. “I enjoy watching sports but most of all I enjoy watching the Aldergrove Kodiaks play at Aldergrove Arena, says Chris, who has a Kodiaks season’s pass and also volunteers at the Kodiaks games, compiling team statistics and such. Chris continues to work at Extra Foods as a grocery clerk, although he recently moved to Fort Langley. “In my spare time I like going to movies, taking photographs and collecting sports cards. I really enjoy learning and reading about history, too, adds Chris.

Council to hire outside help to settle wrangling

The staggering cost of finding and hiring top talent today—not to mention the millions of

By DAN FERGUSON

dollars’ worth of productivity that can be left unrealized

In a bid to end infighting over procedure, Township Council is calling on outside help. A majority voted Monday (Sept. 30) to adopt mayor Jack Froese’s proposal to bring in a “facilitator” to sit down with the mayor and councillors in a bid to end the conflict over the way councils conducts its business. The latest battle erupted when Councillor Bob Long said something had to be done about timeconsuming debates over notices of motion that any member of council can file on any issue. Before council debates such proposals, Long said they should be reviewed by staff first. The Long proposal would require a “referral to staff for an information report as to the background, financial implications and staff recommendations prior to any action being taken …” It would provide

when a company’s employees aren’t engaged with their

jobs—highlights

the need to devote more time and resources to developing and managing this greatest asset.1

DAN FERGUSON PHOTO

Township councillors Kim Richter and Bob Long clashed over a Long proposal to speed up council meetings by requiring councillors submit notices of motions to staff for review. “more opportunity for reflection,” Long said, and produce “far more intelligent debate” than the arguments that often erupt at the end of council meetings when notices of motion are presented and “a certain amount of fatigue is involved.” There was considerable push-back at the Monday afternoon meeting, with councillor Kim Richter calling the Long proposal “anti-democratic” and possibly illegal. “Why are we dragging staff into screening everything?” Richter said. “All this is doing is

wrapping us in more and more and more and more red tape.” Councillor Charlie Fox defended his admittedly many notices of motion as necessary. “I don’t think I bring frivolous notices of motion to council,” Fox said. Michelle Sparrow said she had problems with “quelling” notices of motion that councillors use to raise matters of concern to residents. “I’ve yet to find another way of doing the people’s business,” Sparrow said.

Councillor Bev Dornan said her impression is that, compared to other B.C. municipalities, Langley seems to generate “significantly more” notices of motion. Mayor Froese said though he has no position one way or the other on notices of motion, something must be done about the battles over process. Bringing in a facilitator would help councillors “fully discuss” the broader issue, Froese said. His proposal was adopted with a 6-3 vote.

IRICE: Ingrid Rice’s View

Plenty that needs fixing Editor: This province and this country are among the best places to live, yet they need fixing. There is no money for North Shore and other rescue organizations; special needs kids are not getting their share; veterans’ benefits are getting cut back; pensioners who built this country are having to do without and now having to wait longer for their benefits; ticketing or charging marijuana users, when down the street they freely inject heroin and cocaine at a government site with free needles; thousands of children live under the poverty line. It goes on and on. Yet politicians get gold plated indexed pensions when their terms are up. Senators use us as their personal piggybank; we give foreign aid to countries arming themselves with billions in military hardware; we have civil servants quitting their jobs and being handed phenomenal severance packages; we had a head of the B.C. Ferries Corporation given a “performance” bonus and now we have that same ferry corporation and TransLink who continually plead poverty, having their executive given more phenomenal bonuses and raises on top of their already exorbitant salaries. This needs to be fixed. What we need is a political party made up of senior citizens who have the time and the life experience combined with common sense to reset this country’s priorities and get us back on the rails before this train truly runs off the track. If this pattern is allowed to continue then we will be looking at comparable non-sustaining deficits as our American neighbours. Fred Dalkeith, Aldergrove

VICTORIA – With the B.C. and federal governments once again struggling to climb out of deep operating deficits, it’s a good time for the release of Mark Milke’s book Tax Me, I’m Canadian. An update of the same title published 12 years ago, the book retains the history of taxes in Canada, detailing how Canada’s tax system was initially built to mimic the United States system in the late 19th century. Beyond the history, it is mostly new material. Included are chapters on the global meltdown of 2009, the surge of pension liabilities as the baby boomers retire and the flawed logic behind the “Occupy” and “Idle No More” protests. Some readers will immediately note that Milke works for the Fraser Institute and was previously B.C. director of the Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation. But the book is not just an argument for cutting taxes. It also dismantles persistent myths that income taxes are illegal, and launches a broadside on what Milke calls “Canada’s corporate welfare carnival.” Many people will be able to identify some top names in the government subsidy game: Bombardier, General Motors, even poor old Rolls Royce Canada. Some will also be well aware that our supposedly tight-fisted Conservative federal government has continued to pour out “regional development” and other funds

What does ‘life’ mean? Perils of an ‘entitlement state’

to every part of the country. But I did not know that Industry Canada grants were handed out to pizza parlours (including the remote pizzastarved village of Kamloops), or to help open gas stations or convenience stores in Kelowna, Vernon and Chilliwack. Milke makes a useful point for B.C. about royalty rates for timber, natural gas and other resources. They are resource rents, and if they are too high the tenants will move out. Reducing them isn’t a subsidy, especially if it leads to big revenue gains as B.C.’s unconventional shale gas incentives have done. On the Occupy movement: The infamous “one per cent,” who in Canada earn $250,000 a year or more, earned 10 per cent of all income and paid 20 per cent of all taxes in 2010. The bottom 73 per cent of tax filers paid just 17 per cent of all taxes. About a third paid no tax at all. On Idle No More: When Attawapiskat Chief Teresa Spence played to the Ottawa media with her soup strike, former Liberal leader Bob Rae suggested a nearby diamond mine should share more revenue. Milke omits the substantial support and employment that mine provides, and glosses over the misguided blockades that disrupted that and other job-creating enterprises. But he does detail the

disastrous effects of passive resource wealth bestowed on impoverished aboriginal communities, and contrasts it with the success stories of reserves that build their own enterprises through hard work. On public sector pensions: Milke notes that historically, public employees traded higher wages for better benefits and job security. Now their wages are generally higher, and taxpayers have to cover their personal pension contributions (as a portion of those wages) as well as the employer contributions, plus the “defined benefit” payout, which has to be subsidized far beyond what the pension fund can support. On the debt-financed welfare state, there are memorable observations, like this one: “For the record, the generous Quebec welfare state and its ostensibly more progressive model are paid for in part with the taxes of other Canadians; Quebec is merely the North American equivalent of Greece.” The recent B.C. political crisis over adoption of the harmonized sales tax showed that there is too much emotion and too little knowledge about how taxes work. This book is a step towards addressing that. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalNews.com Twitter: @tomfletcherbc E-mail: tfletcher@blackpress.ca

Editor: While we all, of course, wish Mr. Larry Takahashi all the best in his efforts to rehabilitate himself, I wonder about the sanity in the announcements heard today. Mr. Takahashi is to be placed in a “half-way” house, in Victoria, with unescorted leave. This is to be allowed, for some unexplained reason, until the end of December, when he is to be returned to prison. Please, someone give me a dose of reality here. This man was sentenced to three life terms in prison. He was convicted of a number of rapes, having been called the “Balaclava Rapist”. He acknowledged that he is possibly responsible for as many as 100 rapes, in all. And he is now to be allowed to roam the streets of Victoria unescorted? What does it really mean to be sentenced to three life terms? Wayne Boylan, Aldergrove

Beware of mail thieves Editor: We were recently contacted by a member of the Abbotsford Police Department and asked if we could get a message out to the rural folks. The constable would like to warn rural residents of a series of robberies, including a rash of community mail box break and enters. The mail that has been stolen is for the most part, seniors pension cheques, GST rebates and other assistance cheques. These occurrences have been happening through-out northwest Abbotsford, west Abbotsford and many other rural regions of Abbotsford. The police would like any suspicious vehicles or persons loitering in your neighbourhood to be observed, descriptions taken and reported to the Abbotsford police. If theft or illegal activity is in progress, then call 911. If you wish to report a suspicious activity, call Community Policing at 604-859-5225. Other options are to attend the Community Policing Office located at #105-34194 Marshall Rd. or text message to ABBYPD (222973). Brian Kingman, Mt. Lehman

Fireworks response appreciated Editor: I must tell you that I did receive a phone call from Mr. Bill Storie (from Township Bylaws office) and also Mayor Jack Froese regarding my issue with fireworks at this time of the year, and although there appears to be very little that can be done unless the culprits are in fact caught in the act, I am assured by both that every effort is being taken to at least reduce the use of fireworks. There are still so many options available to the public to access fireworks; it is difficult to monitor and enforce the bylaws. I was pleased that both people contacted me personally and showed great understanding and empathy for my concerns and sympathy for the impact the fireworks have on the pets in our community, and I want to thank both of them for getting back to me. Grower vows to fight ‘pot’ zoning By ALINA KONEVSKI Aldergrove Star

Sam Mellace has the perfect set up for his medical marijuana grow-op. Set in the backwoods of Mission, the large lot is wooded and completely private. He has no neighbours. There’s only one road in, which he monitors. For the past decade, Mellace has been legally growing pot for personal use on agricultural land under Fraser Valley Regional District jurisdiction. But his operation is at risk. FVRD is considering banning grow-ops from farm land, relegating them to an industrial zoning. For Mellace, moving is not an option. “I’ll fight this tooth and nail. There isn’t anything here that’s not done to code, and I’ll show you. Everything here is done to code and above. Security-wise, nobody has this kind of security, Mellace told the Abbotsford News during a tour of his property in October. Mellace is a long-time marijuana activist who has influenced a growing list of regulations surrounding medical marijuana use and production. The possibility that FVRD would ban his operation on his ag land has thrown a wrench into his expansion plans. He has postponed his application to Health Canada for a licence to grow pot commercially because he fears such a licence would require him to move to an industrial park. FVRD is leaning towards permitting grow-ops only on land zoned for industrial use, following a precedent set by the city of Chilliwack in August. When new federal rules that ban grow-ops in private homes go into effect in April 2014, medical marijuana operations in Chilliwack will be permitted in special industrial zones only, in the same class as slaughterhouses, asphalt manufacturers, and sewage treatment plants. The concern with allowing farm land to be used for growing medical marijuana are the potential odour and security risks. Some have also argued that it is unfair to give agricultural land-

Sam Mellace at work in his marijuana grow-op. related tax breaks to pot growers. On the other side of the argument is Mellace. During the Abbotsford News’ tour, Mellace’s complex was nearly completely odourless. The only exception was a mild smell of pot surrounding the building where buds dry. When it comes to security, Mellace argues that in an industrial facility he would be at much higher risk than he is now. “Putting everybody (medical marijuana growers) in an industrial area will cause criminal havoc, he said. “There are too many security breaches. Mellace keeps the location of his current operation quiet. A separate office in Abbotsford, under the name New Age Medical Solutions, handles billing and deliveries. Trusted staff then truck supplies to Mission. The complex itself has ground sensors, alarms, cameras, and motion-activated lights. An eight-foot barbed wire fence surrounds the land, and there is a separate fence for the building housing the approximately 600 plants. At times of high production, there are guard dogs and armed security. Mellace worries he won’t be able to keep such tight control of the complex in an industrial area, especially if his location is publicly known. Other than security, Mellace is concerned that chemicals used by neighbours in an industrial park might damage his plants. He also fears the higher operational costs of a larger industrial facility would put him out of business.

BLACK PRESS PHOTO

In the future, Mellace wants to grow his plants in the ground, shielded by low greenhouses. And he’s not looking for farm status or tax breaks. “It’s a plant. You can’t convert this into industrial if it’s a plant. How?,â€? said Mellace. “As far as farming is concerned, the definition of farming is plants and animals‌The definition of industrial does not include plants and/ or animals.â€? Mellace supports closing grow-ops in residential areas, and moving them to regulated locations that are known to RCMP and Health Canada. His current set-up fits this criteria, he said. “I’m nowhere near a hospital, nowhere near a school. No neighbours, no nothing. And that’s the way it should be. You’re supposed to be in remote areas. Don’t even be anywhere near the city,â€? he said. FVRD will consider zoning of medical marijuana at the next electoral area services committee on Nov. 13 at 1 p.m. in Chilliwack. Mellace said he is applying to be a delegate at the meeting in order to present his case. The City of Abbotsford is moving to ban medical marijuana grow-ops within city limits entirely. The federal government is phasing out the rules that allow private users to grow pot in their homes, the licence under which Mellace has been operating since 2002. Instead, pot will be grown in factory farms monitored by the RCMP and public health

inspectors. The first licences to operate such farms have already been granted. NOT YOUR AVERAGE GROW-OP Ever since Mellace made headlines in 2010 for smoking a joint – legally – on Parliament Hill, he has been pushing the boundaries with his buds. With help from researchers at various Canadian universities, Mellace has developed a way to separate the high-inducing chemical THC - from the chemicals that relieve pain - CBD and CBN. The result is a skin cream that relieves arthritis. It’s a butter that bakes into cookies. It’s a throat lozenge. “We’re not promoting the smoking park,â€? said Mellace. “We liquify it. So by liquifying it, we can give you more CBD, more CBN, and take out the THC, so there’s no high.â€? Mellace is thinking about people aged 40 plus, for whom a medicated pasta sauce or a candy may be more accessible than smoking. Some of his products contain THC; others don’t. As Mellace experiments with his buds, he is learning to control the amount of THC in the product. In the future, he could customize medicated creams and sauces to clients’ specifications. “There’s no addiction. There’s no high. You’re getting the pain relief you want and you can still go to work, without having that social nightmare of getting addicted,â€? Mellace said. “This is all natural. It’s all organic, there’s no pesticides, no carcinogens‌We just want to give the doctors more tools to work with.â€? For now, Mellace can’t sell any of the products. He can only produce them for personal consumption, he said. But he expects regulations to change soon. And when they do, Mellace is ready to move quickly. “Nobody has this yet. We were the first ones. We’ve always been the pioneers in extraction and research and development. We have seven years of it already in play. We’re ready for clinical trials. We’re waiting,â€? said Mellace.

For almost five decades the Ford F-150 has been the best selling truck, with little chance they will lose that crown in the near future. What has been happening, over the last few years, is a strong shift from General Motors to RAM in terms of establishing the second best selling truck brand. The rise in RAM popularity can be traced back to a few key changes over the last several years, from muscular styling to class-leading interiors, a refined ride, plus engine and transmission advancements. I drove the 2014 RAM model range recently, on a beautiful fall day, just outside of Toronto. The “RAM Roundup” was a great opportunity to get my hands on these new trucks well before they arrive at BC dealerships. Looks A big part of the RAM brand success has been built on the sturdy and macho exterior styling. Front and centre is a grille that was enlarged, but better integrated, for the 2013 model year. Depending on the trim the grille finish can be chrome, painted or with a different insert. This feature is one RAM owners love so, in this case, larger ALL TREATS, NO TRICKS -

is better. Behind the grille are “active shutters” that close at higher speeds to help send the wind around the vehicle to improve aerodynamic efficiency. The same idea was also behind the longer side step, which helps reduce buffeting down the side of the trucks. One option that I find fascinating, and would seriously consider, is the $1500 air suspension that can be lowered for easier entry into the RAM or loading into the bed. Plus this system automatically lowers over 100km/h to also reduce aerodynamic drag. At lower speeds and for off-road duties, the air suspension can be raised for better ground clearance. Having had a chance to drive several RAM trucks with this feature I notice the already smooth ride is even better and the cabin is further insulated from vibration. Inside In the past trucks were typically used for work. Today, trucks have grown in popularity because they can be rugged on a work site and luxurious for all occupants. Having driven the Ford and new GM trucks recently, I can easily say that RAM still has the lead in interior design and finish with the Chevrolet and GMC right behind. (Ford is looking dated but look for an all-new F-150 in 2015). The centre console can be equipped with an 8.3-inch Uconnect communications and entertainment screen. In addition, there is a large

November 5 to 11 “In Peace” IIn n the Service Servicee off Peace TThe Royal Canadian Legion L is asking all Canadians to pause on Remembrance Day. On Monday, November 11 at 11am, 1 radio and TV signals will stop. Shops and schools, factories and farms will be still as silence sweeps across Canada like a wave. They fought for us, for our country, and for our future. Several Remembrance Day services have been organized throughout the community and Township of Langley Council encourages residents to attend, remember, and give thanks.

The Murrayville and Fort Langley Cemeteries have twin cenotaphs that were erected in 1921. More than 500 veterans are buried in the two cemeteries.

Remembrance Day: Lest We Forget We must remember. If we do not, the sacrifices of those hundreds of thousands of Canadian lives will be meaningless. They died for us, for our homes, for our families, and our friends. They gave of themselves for a collection of traditions Canadians cherish, and a future we all believed in. They died for Canada. The meaning of their sacrifice and their valor rests with our collective national consciousness.

Totems top of league, aim for valley champs Aldergrove Star

Aldergrove Community Secondary School Senior Boys Soccer completed a solid season in league play on Thursday, Oct. 24 by defeating Langley Secondary, 4-0, giving the Totems the league title and Langley District Championship. The win typified the play the team has shown all season with good passing skills and a solid team work ethic. Some young up and comers played key roles on Thursday, with Jimmy Zong, Sean Connolly and Ryan Schmunk putting in some hard miles to support the team in their victory. Goal scorers were Jimmy Zong, Pietro Romegoli, Nathan Dahl and Brad Wightman, and the shutout was earned by Nagi Nakagawa. The Totems’ season record consisted of seven wins and one tie. With this being their second league title in as many years it allows the Totems to advance into Fraser Valley play starting this Tuesday. Aldergrove will host MEI from Abbotsford on Oct. 29. The Fraser Valley Championships is a double knock out format so Aldergrove will have a game on Thursday, Oct. 31 as well.
