Plane crash claims three

Gazette staff The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the identities of the three men killed when the float plane in which they were flying crashed at Potts Lagoon, on West Cracroft Island, last Thursday. Kevin Roger Williams, aged 42, from Lake Country in the

Okanagan, was the pilot of the Air Cab Cessna 185 floatplane which crashed into an island in the middle of Potts Lagoon, where it was expected to land, at about 11:45 a.m. on Oct. 24. The two passengers on the plane were Frederick Gerald Cecil Wiley, aged 40, of Merville on Vancouver

Island, and Norman Slavik, aged 59, of Surrey. The two had chartered the plane to take them from Port McNeill to a logging operation on West Cracroft Island, a small island on the east side of Robson Bight east of Alert Bay. The plane struck a heavily wooded embankment about 20

yards upslope from Potts Lagoon, located on the south side of Clio Channel on West Cracroft Island. Several people witnessed the crash and rushed to the scene, but there was nothing they could do as

Cougar stirs up Port Hardy residents Gazette staff PORT HARDY—Barely a week after at least two cougars sparked school lockdowns and a hunt in Port McNeill, another big cat — or more — has made its presence felt in Port Hardy.

James Hilgemann of the Conservation Officer Service confirmed reports of sightings Oct. 25 in the area around Thunderbird Mall and Port Hardy Hospital, and Oct. 26 off Market Street near CIBC and Tru Hardware.

“We called Port Hardy RCMP to attend on our behalf,” said Hilgemann, who is based in Black Creek. “Since the Oct. 26 report, we’ve heard nothing.” Other residents, however, have shared sightings with

Which made him the second-longest serving official at his final Town council meeting last week. “I thought I’d beat you, but I just couldn’t do it,” Sweet joked to Mayor Gerry Furney, the longest-serving elected official in Canada since being elected councillor and, later, mayor in the 1960s. “The tourism group’s budget, as of Aug. 30, was $12,402, with approximately $2,000 coming out for brochures still needing to be paid out,” said Wickstrom. She added that a Vancouver Island map was going to be included in the publication in the coming year. Mayor Furney asked whether effectiveness of the ad might be tracked, perhaps through the offer of a free coffee at the Visitors Centre for anyone who brings in the ad. “How about we do a free coffee at Tia’s (Restaurant) with the mayor for anyone who brings in the ad?” Wickstrom joked.

Port Hardy RCMP reports a drop in files Gazette staff Port Hardy RCMP Staff Sergeant Gord Brownridge appeared before council to give his quarterly review of policing in the town. And it was good news, with local crime figures significantly down in comparison with the same quarter last year. The S/Sgt. broke the report into four categories, the strategic priorities of the local detachment. On substance abuse and drug trafficking, Brownridge commended the efforts of one of his constables. “Rob Brennan has been doing a lot of good work with some of the people in the town. All I can say is I hope the trend continues.” The detachment was recently contacted by B.C.’s Crime Reduction Coordinator regarding its progress on this front. The CRC requested the detachment share its strategies with other detachments facing similar issues.

Members continue to focus on traffic offences in the town, with accidents in parking lots highlighted in the report. Of nine reportable collisions last quarter, four occurred in parking lots. The local detachment recently submitted an article to the Gazette (October 10, Lots of care needed) on just that issue, warning motorists that attention was needed in parking lots. The detachment continues to work to maintain a presence in First Nations communities, with a Letter of Expectation signed last quarter with the Quatsino Band. On crime reduction, the detachment is looking at break and enters in the area. Members worked to counter a trend in previous quarters which saw liquor-selling commercial businesses being targeted. Officers sent letters to each such establishment in the town, offering to visit and discuss security with owners.

What about tomorrow? Prime Minister Stephen Harper could probably use some good news about now. We’ll remind him that the ongoing Senate expense scandal has at least knocked that whole business of spying on the Brazilian mining industry off the top of the Canadian news cycle. Hey, at least he’s not Barack Obama, who has some ‘splaining to do to German Chancellor Angela Merkel and, oh, 30-odd other “allies” about why his country’s security agency is tapped into their communications. Former U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan is out flogging a new book, in which he admits to a flaw in the deregulated “free market” ideology he promoted for the better part of three decades. Namely, that the West’s capitalists would always act in their long-term best interest, and that “irrational” or “emotional” behaviour would be harmlessly subsumed long before it could upset the steady-as-she-goes apple cart. Now, though, Greenspan cites the role “animal spirit” played in driving the global economy over a cliff in 2008-09. To illustrate, he describes investors as a “herd” inclined to follow when others of their group establish a trading pattern. That term, however, sounds rather pastoral for behaviour more suited to a feral pack of dogs. It seems many captains of finance and elected officials, who more and more seem to consist of the same members, share that predatory drive. In the same way bankers have tossed the long-term health of the economy — and the planet — under the bus in favour of short-term profit, so do our leaders seem focussed more on their immediate short-term hold on power over any good they might do for their citizens over the long term. In a democracy, the people would have the power to change this.

Perils of an ‘entitlement state’ VICTORIA – With the B.C. and federal governments once again struggling to climb out of deep operating deficits, it’s a good time for the release of Mark Milke’s book Tax Me, I’m Canadian. An update of the same title published 12 years ago, the book retains the history of taxes in Canada, detailing how Canada’s tax system was initially built to mimic the United States system in the late 19th century. Beyond the history, it is mostly new material. Included are chapters on the global meltdown of 2009, the surge of pension liabilities as the baby boomers retire and the flawed logic behind the “Occupy” and “Idle No More” protests. Some readers will immediately note that Milke works for the Fraser Institute and was previously B.C. director of the Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation. But the book is not just an argument for

It also dismantles persistent myths that income taxes are illegal, and launches a broadside on what Milke calls “Canada’s corporate welfare carnival.” Many people will be able to identify some top names in the government subsidy game: Bombardier, General Motors, even poor old Rolls Royce Canada. On the debt-financed welfare state, there are memorable observations, like this one: “For the record, the generous Quebec welfare state and its ostensibly more progressive model are paid for in part with the taxes of other Canadians; Quebec is merely the North American equivalent of Greece.” The recent B.C. political crisis over adoption of the harmonized sales tax showed that there is too much emotion and too little knowledge about how taxes work. Graveyard needs care Dear editor, May I, through the medium of your paper, express some dismay and, perhaps, disgust over the condition of our local graveyard. A little background is in order: As some of your readers may know, In my position as the Poppy Chairman of our local legion branch, some years ago I took it upon myself to place recycled poppy wreaths upon the grave sites of persons that I personally know were veterans. I ask nothing for this; although, each year one family does give me a donation for the poppy

fund in memory of their Father (thank you Jackie and Colleen). Over the course of about the twenty years I have been doing this task I have watched the graveyard deteriorate to the point where, if something is not done soon, it will take a major undertaking to renovate the place. Marker stones are sinking into the ground through subsidence where, very soon, it will be hard to find them. And, when we have one of our wet events, they are in a pool of water. It surely would not take much to lift a stone and put a bit

of fill under it to level the ground. And, you people with loved ones there, please go and remove your old withered tributes and jam jars. They look awful and the jars, if they fill with water and freeze, will break and become a hazard to people and animals. Finally, the condition of the flower bed around the cross, the roads and walkway down “section one” as I choose to call it: the weeds are taking over. On the walkway there is a particularly interesting spiny-type weed the deer are browsing down to a height of about eight inch-

I sure miss that canoe Dear editor, We have many beautiful places here on the North Island. One of these is Clint Beek recreation site on Keogh Lake. I have enjoyed many wonderful days in the sun, on the beach, and canoeing around the lake. Friends, neighbours, and fellow campers would often borrow my canoe for a paddle, so I decided to leave it there for all to enjoy. Last Sunday was another pristine day, so I thought I’d go out to the lake for a paddle, and bring my canoe in for the winter. When I got to the lake there was only a trail in the sand, where my canoe use to be. Perhaps my canoe will find its way back to me and all those who enjoyed it last summer .... Since I reside at Alert Bay and, to get to North Island College I have to board a ferry, then, at Port McNeill, get on a transit bus, then, at Port Hardy, take a taxi to the NIC office. I signed up for the allday course on Saturday, another expense. I had to cancel this course because the transit bus only runs at a limited time on Saturdays. NISS heating system to be hot stuff Gazette staff PORT HARDY— Students and staff at NISS will have to wait a little longer for a planned upgrade to the heating system at the school. But when they do get it, it could be pretty cool for a heating system. Treasurer John Martin told the board that staff were working with engineers from the Regional District on plans to use waste heat from the arena to heat the school. To keep the ice solid on the arena floor, huge refrigeration units draw heat from inside the building and shed it outside. The plan would be to funnel that unwanted warmth from the heat exchangers to the nearby high school.

“This is really exciting,” said Martin. “It sounds really positive but it needs some money up-front.” The upgrade wasn’t included as a line item on a five-year financial plan presented last week. Instead, funds are being saved from this year’s plan to be added to next year’s as funding for the project’s installation. Once up and running, the project should see significantly lower heating bills for the school as the arena — in operation during the colder months — supplies much of the winter heating. Publications School Board members were unanimous in their praise of a district

newsletter. “It’s a way of getting topics and ideas out to the community,” explained Superintendent Scott Benwell. “It’s a first trial; we’ve received some good feedback. It fills a niche of drawing attention to some of the good work done in our schools.” “We’ve got some wonderful things going on in this district,” concurred Chair Leightan Wishart. The board also heard that the SD85 would be featured in an upcoming LEARN magazine profile. “They would like to feature our district around the work we’re doing on our Aboriginal Educational programs,” explained Benwell. District Principal of

School Board First Nations Programs Kaleb Child is to be featured on the cover of the magazine while he and others in the program are highlighted in an article within its pages. “There’s a real sense of pride (about this),” said Benwell. Quality Teaching A s s i s t a n t Superintendent Katherine Macintosh shared news that the district was selected to participate in a new initiative on teaching excellence. The district was one of 32 that submitted proposals to the Ministry of Education and one of only six

were chosen to participate. “We’re excited by this opportunity,” said McIntosh. “Not only is this funded by the ministry, but we’ll have the opportunity to share our results provincially. I’m very excited to be a part of this.” “This is not about being the token rural district,” said Benwell, “this was done on merit. We can stack up with anyone they put us against.”

“You’ve seen this,” said Martin. “We’ve just gone through a year so we’ve moved from projected to actuality. Due to continued declining enrolment, we’ve added another year of funding protection. We’re looking at $200-300 thousand in reductions yearon-year. With a prudent approach we will not be in a deficit any of those years.” “We need to build good habits in this district,” agreed Benwell.

Finance projections A prudent approach to financial management will keep the district’s books healthy in the long-term and avoid a deficit, treasurer Martin told the board during a long-term financial projection.

Strategic plan The Board of Education voted to accept a draft of the district’s strategic plan, the fruit of months of collaboration aimed at defining a framework for future direction in the district.

DDT’s impact on North Island coho runs We don’t have to look very far into our history to see some surprising examples of what once constituted ‘acceptable environmental impacts.’ In 1955, North Island foresters realized they had a problem. The valuable stands of timber in the area from the Nimpkish River north were seeing a significant infestation of the black-headed budworm. Worried about the possible impact on timber supplies, the province decided to experiment with a new treatment that was first used to kill parasites during World War II to prevent the spread of malaria and typhus. Dichloro-diphenyltrichloroethane, known more commonly as DDT, is colourless, tasteless, and almost odourless. The government knew that the DDT application could have significant effects on the local fish and wildlife, and involved the Department of Fisheries and the Game Commission in the experiment. Flight patterns were designed to avoid rivers. The treatment on North Island forests involved mixing one pound of DDT with a wood penetrating emulsifier, added to a gallon of diesel oil. One gallon was then applied per acre by low-flying aircraft, with a total of 155,000 acres being sprayed in effected areas between June 10 and 20, 1957. The spraying annihilated almost all insects

Atoms, Alberni skate to tie

Gazette staff PORT HARDY— An Ethan BonoTyler Roper partnership supplied all three goals in a 3-3 see-saw tie when the North Island Eagles Atom Development faced Alberni Valley last weekend at Port Hardy's Don Cruickshank Memorial Arena. “The kids came out flying right from the start,” atoms coach Ray Bono said. “It was

a strong effort. They certainly deserved a tie, at least.” This visitors struck first, midway through the second period, but the Eagles were only behind for just over a minute as Roper found the net off of Bono’s assist. The teams were locked in a stalemate for the rest of the period, the Eagles finally pulling ahead for a deserved lead with 16:08 left to play

in the third. A Roper pass found Bono waiting to pounce in the slot and he found the net to give the home side the advantage. The two sides battled for control in the centre before Alberni got a breakthrough of

their own with 9:21 on the clock, sparking a frantic end-to-end finale. The Eagles got their noses in front once more through a masterful strike from Roper. Bono’s pass found the Port Alice

skater in space on the edge of the left circle. Roper then carved a route across the face of goal and slotted home a shot at the far post. It wasn’t to be the Eagles’ day, however, as the visitors surged forward on a power play minutes later, a glancing touch from a scramble in the slot enough to elude Eagles goalie Kayden Jones and trickle across the line.

The atoms will wrap up the tiering portion of their schedule this weekend when they host Juan de Fuca at 1:45 p.m. Saturday in Port Alice. “Once we get into our tier and start playing our league games, I think the kids will figure it out,” Bono said. “We’re right there, just one step away. And they’re having fun, win or lose.” Or draw.

Late lapse costs Midgets against Comox

Gazette staff PORT ALICE— The Eagles Midgets were two-thirds of the way to a fine victory against the Tier 2 Comox Chiefs last weekend before a third-period collapse allowed the visitors to skate away with a 4-2 win. A three-goal flurry from the Chiefs in the closing nine minutes overturned a hardearned 2-1 Eagles lead that carried deep into the third period. After a back-andforth opening to the game, the Eagles gradually took control as the period went on. The home side were rewarded with a goal with 7:32 on the clock when a Malcolm Browne shot found Zach Cameron on the crease, his deflection steering the puck into

the net. The Eagles found their check late in the period, and initially paid the price for overuse when a power-play goal from the visitors tied the score. The hitting paid off immediately in the second. The Eagles found

an extra yard from the puck drop, the visitors seemingly reluctant to crowd the home side and the Eagles took full advantage. Darryl Coon took control of the puck in centre ice and intelligently held up play waiting for the onside. When the Comox

defenders failed to close him out, Coon pushed into space across the blue line and let fly with a long-range missile that caught the Comox goalie flatfooted and gave the Eagles the lead. The home side could have had more as they

peppered the goal with mid- to long-range efforts, perhaps choosing the shot over the pass a little too often. The Eagles were dominant before the ice-cleaning break, relishing the extra space, quick to chase down loose pucks and looking far hungrier

than the visitors. But for a six-minute spell in the third where all the damage was done, the Eagles were the superior side on the ice. The midgets will be back in action Saturday when they host Nanaimo at 2:30 p.m. in Port Hardy.

Bulls rally for 2-2 draw against Mustangs Gazette staff PORT HARDY— It was honours even last weekend as the Mustangs and Bulls played to a 2-2 tie at the Don Cruikshank Memorial Arena in the Mens Commercial Hockey league. Much like the old cliche, it was a game of two halves and the first belonged to the Mustangs. John Murgatroyd opened the scoring for the Port McNeill outfit, slotting home from a Ryan Rushton assist with 12:43 on the clock. Eight minutes later Murgatroyd turned provider, putting Glen Moore in to double the Mustangs’ lead and giving a buffer to take into the ice-cleaning break. Whatever was said in the Bulls locker room during the break fired up the Hardy side for the second half. An Yvan Noel pass gave Brad Zealand an extra yard down the left during a power play and his wraparound shot found the back of the net. Peewees rally past Juan de Fuca, 8-6 J.R. Rardon Gazette editor PORT HARDY—If the North Island Eagles peewee hockey team is establishing an identity in the early days of the 2013-14 season, it’s one of a come-from-behind team. Rhys Dutcyvich scored his second hat trick in a week and Mathew Saunders added a pair of goals Sunday as the peewees rolled to an 8-6 Vancouver Island Hockey League Division 3 victory over Juan de Fuca Sunday at Don Cruickshank Memorial Arena. The game was the league season opener for the peewees (6-5 overall), and followed a 3-2 loss to the

same Juan de Fuca squad one day earlier, in a noncounting exhibition game. In that meeting, the Eagles went out in front 2-1 before the visiting Grizzlies rallied with a pair of third-period goals at Chilton Regional Arena in Port McNeill. That result was reversed in emphatic fashion in Sunday’s rematch in Port Hardy. The Eagles overcame deficits of 3-0 in the first period and 4-3 in the second to claim the league win, outscoring the Grizzlies 8-2 through the middle of the contest before the visitors got a late goal to close the gap. “We started working hard

Whale of a time Gazette staff PORT McNEILL— It may not have been the first time a church collection plate was used to help fund whale research and education. On the other hand, perhaps it was. St. John Gualbert Church hosted its third Speaker’s Corner event last week, featuring Jackie Hildering of the Marine Education Research Society in an educational, entertaining and, occasionally humorous presentation highlighting the return of humpback whales to the waters of North Vancouver Island over the past decade or so. Recapping the pressures that drove the huge marine mammals

each month, the series is the brainchild of the church’s board of directors and Reverend Wade Allen. Next month’s Speaker’s Corner features Dr. Paul Spong of OrcaLab, who will speak Nov. 20 at 7 p.m. on the facility’s ongoing research efforts around the resident and transient populations of killer whales in the region. Admission to the speaker’s corner events is free. Donations are accepted and encouraged, and are provided to the speakers to assist in efforts in their efforts for encourage ecological and environmental protection and rehabilitation efforts in the region.

The show that nearly wasn’t Gazette staff PORT McNEILL— The folk-fusion band Wheat in the Barley spent last week on a whirlwind concert tour of North Vancouver Island’s schools. But what was supposed to be an exclamation-point finale to the tour almost never happened. Wheat in the Barley showcased their instrumental virtuosity, stylistic eclecticism and songwriting chops Oct. 18 at Gate House Community Theatre before a small but music-savvy crowd. What the audience lacked in numbers — perhaps 40 hardy souls turned out — it made up for in appreciation for the group’s genrebending skill on stage. The quartet of Steve Gidora, Victor Smith, Nicole Scoffield and Mark Dowding played shows at both elementary and secondary schools on the North Island from Tuesday through Friday last week, and had just performed their sound check for Friday night’s show at Gate House Theatre when disaster struck. Dowding admits to tripping over a cable, which set off a chainreaction that resulted in Scoffield’s violin being

jarred from a small table and knocked to the floor, where its neck was broken away from the body. That led to a series of calls in search of a replacement instrument, which drew in members of the North Island Concert Society and North Island Community Band. Eventually, a loaner violin was secured from Hyde Creek teen Maia Rardon, who had played the instrument with NICB and the Pacific Winds youth band several years earlier. The loaner violin, delivered about an hour before the start of the show, put Scoffield back in the mix. “I’ve got two more violins at home, but home is in Vancouver,” said Scoffield. “There was no way to get one of them sent here in time.” The 11th-hour substitution created a change for Scoffield, who normally plays with an amplified pickup on her own violin but who had to utilize a standing microphone Friday. Dowding, whose instrument selection

included two saxophones, a flute and a table covered with harmonicas, pipes and whistles, noted Scoffield is also an accomplished pianist. But the group’s numbers were all worked up with Scoffield on the fiddle, and its playlist was too reliant to fulfill with the other three members. Which is not to say the players did not cover plenty of musical ground. With Gidora on both guitar and violin, Dowding’s multiple instruments and Smith’s wide-ranging capability (accordion, percussion, guitar, flute and whistles), Wheat in the Barley has an extensive range covering bluegrass, Celtic, blues, pop and folk, not only North American but Eastern European and South American styles. The group’s playlist at Gate House was a mix of original compositions from members, traditional numbers, and a hybrid of traditionals modified by the band.”We’re going to do a song Steve wrote,

Leif Irving Ericson Born in Vancouver, BC to Eric and Elvera Ericson on June 7, 1946 and passed away on Sept 27, 2013 at his home in Sointula, BC. Leif enjoyed mechanics, photography, reading, and traveling. During his travels he made many new friends and on one of these trips in the early 1970â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, met his wife of 13 years while visiting family in Jamtland, Sweden. Leif went on to live in Sointula, BC with his wife and children, making a living as a fisherman on the Alisa-Y. After retiring from fishing he made several trips to Mexico enjoying the sun, the culture and time spent with new friends. The light of his life were his children now residing in Sweden and his grandchildren (Adam 6, Ingrid 5, Elsie 3, and Vera 2) who kept in touch with Grandpa through letters, photos, drawings and phone calls. He is predeceased by parents, Eric and Elvera Ericson and sister Rita. He is survived by his children TherĂŠse (Jonas; grandchildren Adam and Vera), Katrina (Henrik; grandchildren Ingrid and Elsie), Clayton (Miriam) in Sweden; Curt (Peter) from NY, Michelle (Norm and children) from BC, sisters Wilma (Dave) and Lorna (Lea), Max (Rita) and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of life will take place in Sointula, BC at a later date.

Winterfest weekend coming up Gazette staff SOINTULA—The local Winterfestival Craft Fair is now in it’s 37th year, and has never been more popular. The fair, scheduled for 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Nov. 16, fills both the F.O. Hall and the adjacent Community Hall across
