No charges expected in Nomad incident A nine-hour standoff at a Cranbrook motel, which closed the highway through town, ended peacefully SALLY MACDONALD Townsman Staff
The man at the centre of Wednesday’s standoff at the Nomad Motel in Cranbrook gave himself up after talking to a police negotiator. Dozens of police, including an Emergency Response Team, surrounded the motel on the highway through Cranbrook from about 12:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on October 30. That was when the man police described as distraught finally came out of the room he had been holed up in during the nine-hour standoff. RCMP provided more details about the incident after the man was taken into custody Wednesday night. “Shortly before 9 p.m., a 48-yearold male exited the room and was
taken into custody by police,” said Cpl. Chris Newel. “After several hours, a police negotiator was able to make contact with the subject and successfully persuaded him to come out. “There were no injuries as a result of the incident but the subject is being taken to hospital for evaluation.” RCMP said they are not expecting to charge the man. The highway through Cranbrook was closed for nine hours during the incident from Victoria Avenue to 6th Street North. Several businesses across from the motel were evacuated.

Cranbrook Community Theatre (CCT) brings us a comedy and poignant drama about friendship, family and forgiveness in its upcoming production, “Visiting Mr. Green”. The story is about an elderly Jewish Manhattanite, Mr. Green, who has withdrawn
from life following his wife’s recent death. Ross Gardiner, a young corporate executive, is found guilty of reckless driving after almost hitting the elderly Mr. Green, and a community service order is imposed upon Ross: he must spend the next six months making weekly vis-
its to Mr. Green. What starts off as a comedy about two people who resent being in the same room together develops into drama, as family secrets are revealed and old wounds are opened.

Mount Baker students had a rare chance this week to have a writer-in-residence set up at the school. Canadian author Glenn Dixon spent the week mentoring a group of Grade 10 writing students each day. Over the week Dixon also did presentations to other classes and held workshops for teachers talking about the reasons humans make music. During Wednesday’s class, Dixon began the presentation talking about a bone flute that was unearthed which
dates back to 42,000 BC. “That’s the oldest known instrument,” he said. “And you can hear what it sounds like. It’s a haunting sound.” Dixon was working with one specific English class most of this week. “That is a little bit more about the writing techniques, the writing process, that kind of stuff,” Dixon said. He was also working with Social Studies classes on the more cultural aspect of his work. Dixon travelled to 19 countries, most in the past three years, for his recent book “Tripping
the World Fantastic”. The book, which is his second, is about music around the world. Dixon travelled the planet to look at the reasons why people make music and how they do it. He toured Bob Marley’s house in Jamaica, listened to drums in Africa and took sitar lessons in India. “I play guitar so I thought sitar would be easy, but it’s really hard,” Dixon said. He was inspired by George Harrison of the Beatles for that experience.

The B.C. government has announced $65,000 for trades training at the College of the Rockies. The one-time fund-
ing is for 16 foundation seats in trades training courses during 20132014, Advanced Education Minister Amrik Virk announced Thursday.
The funding will support student spaces in the College of the Rockies’ electrical program at its Cranbrook campus. Foundation training
programs provide students with the basic knowledge and skills needed for entry into a particular occupation. Students receive credit for the first-level

These foundation seats at College of the Rockies underline our government’s commitment to ensuring the right training is available in the right places at the right time,” said Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett. The funding is part of an overall $1.8 million for 456 student spaces in 2013-14 at 10 public post-secondary institutions throughout British Columbia and is over and above the funding that public post-secondary institutions will receive from the ITA in 2013−14 for foundation spaces. This is the sixth year that the provincial government has provided targeted foundation skills funding. From 2008−09 to 2013−14 the total funding for foundation skills programming is $10.3 million. “The government of B.C.’s investment of this funding goes a long way to ensure the college continues to play a vital role in preparing skilled workers to support our economy and communities,” said College of the Rockies President and CEO David Walls. “We thank the Ministry of Advanced Education for this investment in the college and in our students.”

City seeks input on downtown block’s future Arne Petryshen Townsman Staff
The City of Cranbrook is looking to start brainstorming on how the block around city hall could look in the future. Currently its cityowned buildings are city hall, the old fire station, the current RCMP detachment and the Studio and Stage Door. It also houses the old electrical brick building originally slated for demolition by council. The building will now likely be preserved by a group of volunteers intent on seeing it live on. The prospect of keeping that building brought the future of the space to the attention of Coun. Bob Whetham. Whetham brought up the need for a vision of the property at a council meeting in the summer, as a result of the swell of support for preserving the brick building. He was looking for public input on the future of the cityowned property, since at some point in the future the RCMP building will need to be updated, just as the city hall building will need to be expanded. The workshop is meant to bring about a
vision for what the whole space could look like in the future. Rob Veg is the senior planner for the city and will lead the workshop. “What we’re ultimately trying to achieve is to identify some of the requirements and get public input on the future use of city-owned land and buildings in the vicinity of city hall,” Veg said. “That will include the fire hall, RCMP, the garage out back and all the city owned land.” At the workshop, Veg will present the current layout and explain the scope of what they are seeking for input. “It’s going to be a hands on workshop to solicit this input,” he said. Then he will take that input and prepare a report for council if all goes to plan. The workshop is Tuesday, Nov. 5 from 7-9 p.m. at the Manual Training Centre. Pre-registration is no later than Monday, Nov. 4. Pre-register by email to cityspace@cranbrook.ca or by calling Veg at 250-489-0241. The training centre is located at 1212 2nd Street North.

Canadian author Glenn Dixon was at Mount Baker Secondary this week as a writer in residence through the Vancouver Writers Fest. Dixon worked with Grade 10 English and Social Studies students, talking about the experience he had while writing the book “Tripping the World Fantastic”.
Dixon visit part of Vancouver Writers Fest Continued from page 1 Everywhere he went people made music in one way or another. In Vienna he studied what makes a musical genius. In Ireland he happened upon a woman playing a Celtic-style harp on the cliffs. One topic in the book is the songs that humpback
whales sing. “There are several humpback whale populations around the world and each one has a different song,” he said. “Which is pretty cool.” The writer post is part of the Vancouver Writers Fest “Spreading the Word” program which offers a chance
for communities that can’t attend the festival because of geographic or economic reasons to take part by sending a Canadian author to spend a week there. Ilona Beiks, education coordinator for the Vancouver Writers Fest, said the program gives students a chance to work with authors. Last year’s
selected writer went to Haida Gwaii. Beiks said Dixon is the first non-fiction author that they have chosen for the program. The writer in residence program is sponsored by Amazon and supported by the Writers Fest’s Michael R. Shaw Fund.
Labour shortage forecast in local tourism industry Kootenay Rockies region poised for tourism job growth with more than 3,000 new job openings by the end of the decade
Submit ted
Regional studies of labour demand and supply by go2hr, B.C. tourism industry’s human resource association, indicate that 3,089 job openings are expected in the Kootenay Rockies by 2020, but the region could face labour shortages as early as 2014. “The Kootenay Rockies faces specific pressures within our industry,” says Arlene Keis, CEO of go2hr. “The unemployment rate is already as tight as what we saw during the labour shortages in the mid-2000s. Compared to many areas of
the province, the region will also have a higher percentage of jobs opening up due to retirements, and the Kootenay Rockies is also affected by seasonality and retention challenges, particularly in resort communities.” The average regional labour demand growth rate is projected to be 1.3 per cent annually, which is slightly lower than the provincial average of 1.6 per cent. By 2020, the region is expected to have a labour shortage of 438 positions left to be filled, which accounts for three per cent of the province’s anticipated
shortages. The food and beverage, and recreation and entertainment sectors will be the hardest hit. “The Kootenay Rockies region is already feeling the effects of labour shortages in the tourism sector,” said Heidi Romich, owner of the Heid Out. “A number of our residents are drawn into the resource industries in the Kootenay Rockies, northern British Columbia, and Alberta, making it increasingly difficult for small businesses to fill positions in our industry.” Tourism businesses and destination management and marketing
organizations are being encouraged to make labour recruitment, retention and training a priority. Last fall, go2hr launched the BC Tourism Labour Market Strategy (TLMS) to help address critical labour needs across B.C.’s six tourism regions. The five industry groups that were selected for study within the tourism sector include: transportation, accommodation, food and beverage services, recreation and entertainment services, and travel services. Further research was undertaken this year to better understand each region’s
unique needs. Through the TLMS, go2hr is working with industry, government and other stakeholders to take strong, proactive steps to leverage tourism’s increasing economic importance and address impending labour shortages. The strategy identifies opportunities to: • Develop career awareness and recruitment campaigns that will highlight job opportunities in an exciting and diverse industry. • Tap into under-represented talent pools such as older workers, aboriginal people, new immigrants, and per-

tions in rural areas of the province. To help the tourism industry align workforce, training and education strategies, go2hr is presenting at industry gatherings, hosting meetings and workshops and providing upto-date information to destination management organizations to pass onto their members and stakeholders. go2hr also offers a comprehensive website that includes a free tourism niche job board and multiple informational resources. RCMP search for man who barged into Elkford home Unknown man follows resident inside after slapping her Arne Pe tryshen Townsman Staff

RCMP set up a perimeter around the Nomad Motel on Cranbrook’s strip early on in the standoff, Wednesday, October 30.
Elk Valley RCMP are searching for a man involved in an incident of unlawful entrance into an Elkford residence on October 27. Cpl. Gerry Sliworsky said police received a call at around 1:20 a.m. from a woman after she’d returned home to find an unknown male standing at the front door. She didn’t recognize him and told him to
leave, then attempted to call 911. The man slapped her and she dropped the phone. She then fled to the bathroom and locked herself in. She could hear the man trying the bathroom door handle, but then noices ceased until a short while later when a family member showed up at the residence. An investigation showed that the rear door to the residence
was open and footprints on the frost covered lawn indicated the man had most likely exited from there. The woman was not physically hurt in the incident, said Swiworsky. He said police are seeking the public’s assistance in trying to identify the male. The man is described as a white male, 24 to 30 years of age, approximately 6’3 in height and wearing a black sweater and blue jeans.
Housekeeper rescued from Study of Flathead bats could lead to disease breakthrough Nomad during standoff Continued from page 1 Midway through the standoff, police learned that a housekeeper was in a room near the one where the man was holed up. She was asked to stay in the room until it was safe to leave. Police removed her from the scene at about 5 p.m.
RCMP said the incident began at about 12:20 p.m. on Wednesday when the emotionally distraught man made a call seeking assistance and an ambulance to take him to the hospital. “However, upon police attendance, he became apprehensive and non-compliant. Due to the statements he made,
police took action to ensure the safety of the subject and others,” said Cpl. Newel. The lengthy police incident ended peacefully, he went on. “The trained negotiator and officers on scene were sensitive to the subject’s state and responded accordingly to ensure a successful ending.”

A new study concludes that B.C.’s Flathead River Valley could play an important role in understanding White Nose Syndrome, a mysterious disease that has nearly wiped out two North American bat species. The first formal inventory of bats in the Flathead, conducted by bat biologist Dr. Cori Lausen over a four-day period in June 2013, detected both species of highly-endangered bat in the Flathead: little brown myotis and northern myotis.

This is the first recording of northern myotis in southeast B.C. and it will be confirmed with follow-up study. White Nose Syndrome, responsible for the recent deaths of almost seven million North American bats, is a poorly-understood fungal disease that kills bats while they hibernate. Lausen’s study, Bat Inventory of Flathead River Valley, points out that “every single mitigation and prevention strategy that has come out of research into this disease requires that the roosts used by hibernat-

ing bats be known.” Hibernacula, or large bat hibernation shelters, are commonly found in karst landscapes and are not known anywhere in B.C. Yet the Flathead area “is surrounded by karst, including the deepest cave in Canada,” says the study. “Extensive karst in the Flathead area suggests that we may find large hibernacula, which in turn could lead to a greater understanding of bats across the west, and hope for helping bats survive the White Nose disease,” Lausen comments. The study urges future inventory to fully describe bat diversity and understand the winter and summer habitats that are important to Flathead bats. It notes that an inventory is “of some urgency given the relatively rapid westward spread of the WNS fungus.” Lausen and other bat researchers also acoustically detected a third significant bat species, the eastern red bat, an at-risk species only recently discovered in B.C. and never so far south in the province. The species was among 10 that bat researchers found or detected during the second annual Flathead BioBlitz in June 2013, organized by conservation groups in B.C. and Alberta.

The greatest science fiction story ever written “For years it lay buried...” The “it” mentioned above was discovered in 1938 by a handful of scientists stationed at Outpost 31 (now McMurdo Station) in Antarctica. Alerted to its presence by their geiger counters, the scientists first thought they had stumbled on a large meteorite. They were incredibly and fatally wrong. This is the plot of ‘Who Goes There?,” probably the greatest science fiction story ever written. It first appeared in the pages of
MIKE’S BOOKNOTES
Mike Selby ‘Astounding Magazine’ in 1938, written by Don A. Stuart. Of course, this was just a pseudonym. The real author was John W. Campbell (whose wife’s name was Donna Stuart), and he did more to influence modern science fiction than anyone else in the 20th century. And chances are you have never heard of
him. Although he occasionally wrote stories, John Campbell was first and foremost an editor. An MIT drop-out, Campbell was hired to edit ‘Astounding Magazine’ in the late 1930s. ‘Astounding’ was just one of the numerous pulp magazines which flourished in the United States before the Second World War. It was a pre-internet, pre-television, and pre-comic book era, and pulp fiction helped supply the mindless and trashy entertainment people needed to vegetate to.
The genre was called pulp as the publications were printed on the cheapest pulp paper available; think 10 grades below newsprint. While most pulps read like a Harlequin romance written by a nine-year-old, Campbell’s reign as an editor would destroy this characteristic. He abandoned the silly super science and B-movie quality of ‘Astounding,’ and demanded that stories not only be well written, but also scientifically accurate. This caused him to reject so many stories early on
Humour, pathos together in “Visiting Mr. Green” Director Tanya Laing Gahr brings a small apartment in New York City to the stage where two local actors, Michael Grossman and Jerrod Bondy, will have you shedding tears of laughter and empathy as they portray the tale of Mr. Green and Ross. “This is a play I’ve wanted to direct for almost 10 years,” said Laing Gahr. “It blends humour and pathos so beautifully and I think the themes will resonate strongly with Cranbrook theatre-goers. And the way Michael and Jerrod absolutely embody these characters is simply brilliant. They astonish
me every rehearsal with their willingness to take chances and connect to this piece. They are outstanding actors.” Visiting Mr. Green will run for 10 nights at the Studio/Stage Door, 11 – 11th Ave. S., Cranbrook, November 29 and 30, December 4 to 7 and December 11 to 14, 2013. All shows start at 8 p.m. Tickets are $13 members/$15 non-members, available at Lotus Books, located at 33 S 10th Ave., Cranbrook, B.C. CCT has been entertaining Cranbrook and area audiences for over 50 years. The society strives to promote and develop local talent: on
stage, behind the scenes, or in the director’s chair. CCT believes theatre, music, dance, and art
But there was a larger reason why Campbell’s star began to fade: Nobody could stand the guy. Campbell was the overbearing crew-cut cigar smoking boss who rubbed everyone the wrong way. His views on African Americans and Jewish people would astound his writers – as would his belief in UFOs, psychic abilities, and perpetual motion machines. One of the writers he discovered was L. Ron Hubbard, and he became so taken with Hubbard’s Dianetics that he talked of little else. Isaac Asimov commented that “talking to him meant listening to a monologue.” “Who Goes There?” remains one of Campbell’s biggest contributions to the field. Instead of a meteorite, the scientists in the story find a the hull of space ship which crashed millions of years ago. A survivor from the crash is a shapeshifting/murdering alien, which quickly begins to pick off the isolated scientists one by one. This story was
adapted for film in 1951 as “The Thing From Another World,” in 1982 as “The Thing,” and again as “The Thing” in 2011. The first two ‘Alien’ films (1979 and 1986) also appear to be heavily influenced by Campbell’s story. William Dietrich’s novel “Dark Winter’ (2001) is basically Campbell’s story stretched into a large novel, with characters referencing ‘The Thing’ films, as well as one who keeps asking “who goes there?” It is the ultimate literary homage. Shortly after his death, the John W. Campbell award was created to assist new writers, and to recognize excellence in science fiction literature. The award was also a posthumous way of honouring Campbell for guiding science fiction into what it is today, as well as for the dozens of careers he launched (even if the writers did have to sit through a three-hour lecture on why L. Ron Hubbard deserved the Nobel Peace Prize.)

that he ended up writing half the magazine himself (thus the ‘Who Goes There?’ pseudonym). By sticking to these high standards, Campbell was the first to print work by Robert Heinlein, Lester Del Ray, Theodore Sturgeon, Jack Williamson, L. Sprague de Camp, A. E. van Vogt, Clifford Simack and Isaac Asimov. Campbell’s choices as an editor ushered in what is now seen as the golden age of science fiction. While more than 90 per cent of the pulp magazines were killed off by the paper shortages of World War Two, ‘Astounding’ remained available (surprisingly enough, it is still around, although now called ‘Analog’). Although Campbell edited ‘Astounding’ until he died in 1971, his reputation faded much earlier than this. New magazines began to appear in the early 1950s (‘Galaxy’ and ‘The Magazine of Science Fiction & Fantasy’), and their well crafted stories stole a sizable readership away from Campbell.

remembers people differently than the world remembers. Secular history is usually the story of conquerors. The world measures their greatness in terms of power. How many wars have they won? How many peoples have they subdued? Will Cuppy says of Alexander 3 of Macedonia that “he is known as Alexander the Great because he killed more people of more different kinds than any other man of his time.” But we remember saints who sought to make the world a better place, who suffered unjustly, who alleviated or prevented the suffering of others. We remember people like St. Hugh of Lincoln. In the 12th century, King Henry 2 of England elevated Hugh to be prior of a new monastery the king had built. Hugh refused to accept the office until the king housed and compensated every peasant who had been evicted in order to build the new monastery. Compare that to the policies of the B.C. Government in providing housing for Expo ’86 and the 2010 Olympic Games, where the homeless were evicted without a single care. In the world, such people are expendable. In the gospel, they are not. In that way, All Saints Day reminds me again of the priorities of the gospel. I invite you to reflect on the thin places in your own life. Where are the thin places, where your spirit is refreshed and where the door to the threshold of the sacred is opened? May the thin places in your life enable you to experience the deep presence of God’s love. Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook.

The final days of World War One
C
ranbrook was in the middle of a Victory Bond drive in the final month of the final year of the war. By the first week of November 1918, local citizens subscribed over $100,000. A $50 bond would buy 1,400 rifles cartridges or 100 hand grenades or 10 gas masks or 50 pair of soldiers’ socks or 10 pair of soldier’s boots. It would pay one soldier for forty days or feed 100 soldiers for forty days or pay Canada’s war bill for four and one-third seconds. The bond drive began in early October; just about the time that army engineer Harry Deacon succumbed to illness at Montreal. Harry was 27 years old, a resident of Cranbrook since he was twelve. He enlisted with the Canadian Engineers in July 1917, but he, as with many casualties of the war, never reached the line of battle. The funeral was held at Macpherson’s funeral parlour next to city hall, and the Last Post played over his grave by returned bugler ex-Sgt. Richardson. Lt. Murray Howard, a pilot with the Royal Air Force, died from injuries sustained in a dogfight over the fields of France in early autumn. While on squadron patrol he engaged two enemy scout planes, shooting both down. He was then attacked by two others and shot through the back from beneath. He managed to land in safe territory but died in a casualty station shortly thereafter. He is buried in the British Cemetery near Pernes, France. Lt. Frank Wilson died leading his men in battle on Sept.24. He was promoted to Captain the next day. Jerry McGregor, a popular young man of the community was killed in action in late October, yet another name to be inscribed on the original “Heroic Dead” memorial on 10th Avenue. Some good news arrived from overseas. Lt. Eugene Phillips, age 22, was awarded the coveted Military Cross for conspicuous bravery on the field of battle earlier in the year.
JANUS:
Then & Now
Jim Cameron The London Gazette reported, “This officer displayed great dash, courage and enterprise in patrol duty on four different nights, securing valuable information and harassing and inflicting casualties on the enemy. “On one night he pushed forward with a small patrol in the bright moonlight, engaged an enemy wiring party with Lewis gun fire and killed six or eight and wounded others. “Pressing forward he was engaged by three enemy machine guns, one of which he silenced with bombs and withdrew without casualties.” Perhaps, in some small way, it balanced the scale of war for the Phillips family. Eugene’s brother, Lt. Sperry Phillips, lost his leg in combat on March 28, 1916. Following a lengthy recovery period he returned to his parent’s home on 7th Avenue in January 1918, receiving a hero’s welcome. On August 12, 1918, Eugene suffered a bullet wound in the shoulder from a German sniper. The report of Lt. Phillips’ wound came days before the more tragic news of the death of Private Stewart Morris in England from meningitis. In January, Stewart and a group of friends were sledding on Fink Hill (named for the Fink residence on the corner of 11th Street and 2nd Avenue), a popular winter activity for many of the boys who went off to fight. Stewart was very well-liked in the community. His obituary noted: “Stewart was a great big rawboned husky good natured fellow. One would have thought that his splendid physique could have withstood the ravages of any disease.”
He was sledding in January, enlisted in April and was dead by August. It all came to a close on a cold November morning. The Armistice was signed at 5 a.m., with the agreement that all fighting would cease six hours later. Word soon reached the larger cities and the festivities began, spreading across the Allied nations. By the evening, Cranbrook was decorated in banners and bunting, the local Herald newspaper published an extra edition and, at 8 p.m., November 11, 1918, bells began to ring, whistles to blow and sirens to sound. A procession formed to the call of bugler Richardson at the old court house on the east end of Baker Street. Headed by returned veterans under a billowing Union Jack flag and followed by every fraternity, lodge, political institution and automobile in the city, the parade moved along Baker Street to the CPR station where a huge bonfire was lit and the German Kaiser burned in effigy. Three cheers were given, God Save the King was sung and the crowd dispersed to begin their new lives. It was a bittersweet celebration, of course, the deaths of so many local boys neither quickly nor easily forgotten. Shortly afterwards came the news that Lt. Eugene Phillips had been killed in action earlier in the month. Although people in town assumed he was still recovering from his bullet wound, he had, in fact, returned to his unit when he was killed on November 1, 1918, the last local boy to die in the war, it would seem. For many of the Cranbrook boys it turned out to be a short walk from their house to their memorial. The carnage was not truly over, however, for although the Armistice halted the relentless mortality rate of the war, at home the locals were, to put it bluntly, dropping like flies. Next week: “It Was the Best of Times; It Was the Worst of Times.”

NEW YORK - The NHL has suspended Buffalo Sabres forward John Scott for seven games for his illegal check to Boston forward Loui Eriksson’s head. Scott already has served three games while waiting for an in-person hearing, which was held Thursday morning. Scott was issued a match penalty for charging and ejected for his hit on Eriksson early in the third period of Boston’s 5-2 win on Oct. 23. Eriksson was skating through the neutral zone and had just dumped the puck into the Sabres zone when Scott skated in from the player’s right and struck him with a shoulder to the face. Eriksson suffered a concussion and spent the night in a Buffalo hospital after the hit. He has yet to return to Boston’s lineup. Canadian Press
Impact ousted from MLS playoffs with 3-0 loss to Houston Dynamo
HOUSTON - The Montreal Impact’s first trip to the MLS playoffs was short and not-so-sweet. The Impact qualified for the MLS playoffs in just their second season, but limped to the finish line in the final two months and lost their first-ever playoff match against the Houston Dynamo 3-0 on Thursday. A loss on the final day of the regular season pushed them down to the No. 5 seed, forcing the Impact to travel to Houston for the one-game knockout round against the Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium. The Dynamo finished two points ahead of Montreal in the standings to earn home field for the knockout round. First-half goals by Will Bruin and Ricardo Clark sucked the life out of the Impact, who had a share of the Eastern Conference lead as late as Sept. 8 before falling to fifth. Bruin scored a second goal in the 72nd minute after Montreal defender Nelson Rivas was ejected from the match following his second yellow card two minutes prior. Canadian Press
Raonic out of Paris Masters, eliminated from chance at spot in London final
PARIS - Milos Raonic lost his chance for a spot in the ATP World Tour Finals, as the Canadian went down to a 7-6 (13), 6-4 loss against Tomas Berdych on Thursday in the third round of the Paris Masters. The defeat in just under two hours also settled the final lineup for the eight-man season wrapup, which starts Monday in London. Stanislas Wawrinka and Richard Gasquet gained the last two places as a result of Raonic’s loss. The 22-year-old from Thornhill, Ont., lost against Berdych for the first time. He had beaten the Czech in both of their previous matches, including a September final in Bangkok. No Canadian has ever reached the year-end event in singles, though Toronto’s Daniel Nestor has made multiple appearances in doubles. Canadian Press

against VIU and Camosun, however, they did get a feel for what to work on an improve in their game. Men’s right side Curtis Stockton was named the Pacwest athlete of the week, with some impressive numbers that included 62 kills, 7 blocks and 14 aces. Both teams had the bye weekend last week, and have had two weeks to prepare for the Royals. Stockton said the opening results for his team were the result of hard work after enduring a 16-hour bus ride down to the competition. To go two-and-two on the road, is a really good thing. It was a really good result, and we’re really pleased with that,” said Stockton. “We could’ve won all four, which shows how competitive we are, and we have never beaten VIU in their own gym ever, so to go backto-back nights and beat
‘em in their own gym in five-set games said something about our character.” The catalyst for the two wins was a loss to Camosun College in the second match that went to a tie breaking set. The Avs recovered from that, and went into Nanaimo to collect a pair of wins against VIU. “That fifth set just shows how close were were, and if we put in a little more dive for that last ball and hit that ball a little bit harder, that we would’ve got over the line,” Stockton added. The team was clicking on the court, with some improved passing, serve receive and setting, said Stockton. “It’s pretty basic and it just gives us a little more confidence, so our passing definitely improved and we were serving aggressively, which is good to see,” he continued. Jayden Roch, a left/ right side with the
women’s squad, said that though the four losses were tough, there are lessons to be learned from each game. “I think we learned a lot. We had one rough game, but we definitely took that and learned from it and came back the next day a lot stronger, Roch said. “We came together as a team more and focused on the things that we can control more, as a team, and I think that helped us a lot. “The games, especially the first two, moved pretty fast, but we competed and we definitely fought hard. We didn’t end up winning any sets, but we definitely competed for them.” Both Roch and Stockton are expecting a good team in the Douglas College Royals, and both are anxious to play in front of a home crowd. Stockton said the team has lost a few key
players from last year, but have strength and experience up the middle and on the left side. However, the Avalanche are hoping to make a statement. “We really want to beat Douglas and put a stamp on this league,” said Stockton. Roch said the women’s team has looked at some game tape and have picked up on a few tendencies, but notes that her team just needs to be focused and play hard. “I’m very excited, it’s our home opener. I’m a bit nervous, but I think our team is coming together nicely and we’re working well together, so I’m hoping for the best,” said Roch. Matches are at the College of the Rockies gymnasium and begin at 6 p.m. for the women and 8 p.m. for the men on Friday, followed by Saturday afternoon matches, which start at 1 p.m. for the women and 3 p.m. for the men.

Sports Local competitor makes an Flyers pick up Downie, impression at fitness event send Talbot to Avalanche
Cranbrook athlete Kaytee Wheaton goes up against the professionals
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. - Pardon Maxime Talbot if he’s a little bit overwhelmed right now. He has a baby on the way and a new system to learn after being traded for the first time in his NHL career. The Colorado Avalanche acquired the veteran forward from the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday in exchange for Steve Downie. Talbot is expected to be in Dallas when the Avs face the Stars on Friday night. The move is somewhat of a surprise, with Colorado off to a 10-1 start and leading its division. But Talbot’s elated that it came to fruition and is eager to get to work under firstyear coach Patrick Roy. “I’ve been following their great start to the season, what they’ve been doing,” Talbot said
Tre vor Cr awley Sports Editor
Hard work and dedication paid off for Kaytee Wheaton for a fitness competition in Edmonton, as she took to the stage against professionals in a World Beauty Fitness and Fashion event earlier in October. Despite missing the cut for the top five in her division, she received positive feedback from her fellow competitors.
“Being a rookie underdog that nobody knew about—I don’t have a professional trainer that would’ve put my name out there more, also just not competing in the federation at all—I blindsided a lot of people.” Kaytee Wheaton “Being a rookie underdog that nobody knew about—I don’t have a professional trainer that would’ve put my name out there more, also just not competing in the federation at all—I blindsided a lot of people,” Wheaton said. “I got first-call out for both the morning and evening show, but unfortunately did not place in the top-five. But the feedback from the pros, was that I should have. I got incredible feedback.” Wheaton has been training for the competition for the last year, which was originally set for June, but rescheduled due to flooding in Alberta. She went up against 25 other athletes who came in from around the world to compete—the professionals of which are regularly featured in fitness magazines. It was only Wheaton’s second competition, but that didn’t seem to faze her ability to make an impression on the judges and fellow competitors. “When you first walk out, you do your routine, which is called a T-walk, and that’s your own set routine and then after you do your routine, you line up,” said Wheaton, “and that’s where the first callouts come out, they grab the best girls to be compared against each other. “So we stand in a line and they make us do corner turns to compare and judge who has the best body and presence as well.” Despite missing the top-five cut, she is happy with how she did, considering the positive feedback from the professionals.

in a phone interview as he waited for a plane bound for Dallas. “I’m really excited to be part of it.” The 29-year-old Talbot had a goal and an assist for the Flyers this season. He has also played for Pittsburgh, helping the Penguins to the 2009 Stanley Cup title. His priorities once he arrives in town? Find a place to stay - and then a new doctor. His fiance is due in February. “That brings a little bit of stress into play,” Talbot said. “We’re excited to do this in Denver.” Talbot already knows quite a few players on the Avalanche, including Matt Duchene and Jean-Sebastien Giguere. Oh, and video coach Mario Duhamel, too, Talbot’s coach when he was a teenager.
“I get traded to a team that has a great deal of momentum right now. It’s exciting,” he said. “They’re on top of the league and there’s a reason for that. They’re a young team. They have a deep roster with a lot of young skill and they should be good for years to come.” Part of the reason for the deal, Roy said, is to beef up the Avalanche’s penalty-kill unit. The team has been short-handed with forward Cody McLeod serving a five-game suspension for his hit along the boards on Detroit Red Wings defenceman Niklas Kronwall two weeks ago. McLeod will sit out one more before returning to the lineup. “(Talbot) is a really good penalty-kill guy,” Roy said. He has some scoring touch, too, finding the net 19 times in 2011-12.

It was a much different experience training for this event, compared to her first one, Wheaton said. “I did one two years ago, but I crash-dieted and completely trained unhealthy and actually very damaging to my body,” she said. “So this was the first real one where I took it upon myself to train healthy and prove that it can be done healthy.” She only gave herself a few months to train for her first competition, and didn’t have a proper diet while doing excessive amounts of cardio and weight training. This time around, she switched up her regimen with the help of local trainer Jodie Pickering. “I gave myself enough time,” Wheaton said, “and then I didn’t have anyone giving my nutrition, so I completely listened to my body
of what’s working and what’s not, and being able to have so much time, I was able to do trial and error. If something felt wrong, I changed it.” Wheaton wants to focus on her two jobs for the time being, but she is eyeing another competition next spring. She enjoys training for the fitness events because it keeps her accountable to herself. “I think it was more so the one thing I could control,” Wheaton said. “If I don’t do the certain things that need to be done, there’s no one to blame but myself. I’m creating a body and a look that only I have control over, so if I fail, I fail myself—I can’t blame anyone. “So it was more so a goal that I could prove that I could get it done, even with a busy schedule and just prove to myself that it could be done healthy as well.”
ABBOTSFORD, B.C. - Mirjam Ott of Switzerland and Margaretha Sigfridsson are tied at 3-0 atop the women’s standings at the Masters Grand Slam of Curling. Sigfridsson moved into a first-place tie with Ott after a convincing 7-1 win over Japan’s Satsuki Fujisawa in Thursday’s seventh draw. The native of Harnosand scored two in the first, fourth and fifth ends, and one in the sixth, and only allowed a single point in the third. Meanwhile, Russia’s Anna Sidorova fell from the ranks of the unbeaten,
falling 6-5 to South Korea’s Ji-Sun Kim. Sidorova made it close by scoring one in the seventh end and stealing another in the eighth, but it wasn’t enough. Kim and Sidorova are both tied for third at 2-1. Saskatoon’s Stefanie Lawton (1-1) earned her first win of the tournament, beating reigning world champion Eve Muirhead of Scotland 8-3. Muirhead fell to 1-2. There’s a four-way tie atop the men’s standings with Glenn Howard of Coldwater, Ont., Calgary’s Kevin Koe, Winnipeg’s Jeff Stoughton and Sven Michel all at 2-0.

Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I am one of six boys. We are all very different. My oldest brother, “Tanner,” just turned 20. He is more of an introvert, and we realize this, but he has done nothing with his life and shows no interest in doing so. He doesn’t have a job and refuses to look for one. He also hasn’t applied for college. We’ve tried everything from coaxing and bribing to threatening, but nothing has worked. My parents are at their wits’ end. We’ve tried talking to him and asking why he has shown so little interest in anything and why he won’t even help with housework when he’s home all day. He just sits, stonefaced, and can’t provide a reason for being a freeloading slug. I am out of high school and have a parttime job. My parents both work, and so does my 16-year-old brother. Please tell me what we can do to help get this kid out into the world. -- End of the Rope Dear End: Has your brother been screened for depression? Is there a possibility of drug or alcohol use? Any of these things could be contributing to his lethargy and lack of motivation. If he is simply freeloading, the easiest way to fix that is to make him support himself and be responsible for his own living arrangements. But he sounds depressed to us. Your parents can visit HelpYourselfHelpOthers.org for screening information. Dear Annie: I had emergency gall bladder surgery last July. Thinking it was indigestion, I ignored the symptoms until the pain became severe. Here’s what flummoxed me: While I was in the hospital, my husband called a close friend to let her know. She said she would be right over. I was in a lot of pain, had an oxygen tube in my nose and also was dozing off from the medication. She swooped in and immediately started grilling me, asking why I had oxygen, who did the surgery, and on and on. She kept asking more probing questions until she made me uncomfortable, as if I were wrong to have had the surgery in the first place. I tried to change the subject, asking about the memorial service for a friend. My husband then made a stupid, flippant comment about open caskets, and my friend just exploded and ran out of the room. I haven’t heard from her since. We live in a small town, and whenever she sees me, she scuttles away. I sent her a note to find out what caused this rift, but she ignored it. I think she’s ashamed of her behavior, and rightly so. I’m not interested in renewing the friendship, but I am still angry at how she treated me. I wish my husband had asked her to leave the hospital when she couldn’t stop criticizing my doctor. Should I try to speak with her? -- Sadder but Wiser Behind the Redwood Curtain Dear Sadder: There are people who react poorly when confronted with a friend who is ill. Some become so distressed that they lose control of their behavior. Others need to be in charge of your care and resent learning about it secondhand, becoming irrationally angry. You are not likely to get a satisfying explanation, and she doesn’t seem willing to admit how inappropriate her behavior was. Forgive her and then move on. Dear Annie: I want to respond to “Frustrated in Louisville,” whose husband constantly interrupts her. On several occasions, I’ve been asked a question, only to have someone else answer it or interrupt my answer. When this happens, I simply say, “It’s tough being a ventriloquist, but the best part is having your dummy speak for you.” After the usual laughter, the offending person learns not to do it again. Of course, this might not be the best response to a spouse. -- Ventriloquist in Ohio Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. YOUR AD in the TOWNSMAN has staying power. has selling power!
With so many advertising mediums dividing the attention of potential customers, newspapers remain the most effective source for reaching consumers. Why? Simply put, newspapers reach more people, more often. Highly portable and highly visible, newspaper ads go with people and stay with them. That means your business is more likely to be on their minds when they’re in the market for related products or services. When it comes to spending your advertising dollars, make the choice that’s tried and true: newspaper advertising works harder for you.
