Auto Preview 2014 Sunday, November 3, 2013 - The Morning Star Z3
Toyota Corolla
Toyota Matrix
Toyota’s multi-million-seller compact brand adds more size and sizzle and also moves up a notch in its fuel-efficiency ranking. Base 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine; five-speed manual transmission and four-speed automatics remain; fuel-sipping CVT optional, but standard with LE Eco model. For a small car, the Corolla has some big numbers to brag about. Like the fact that in 47 years Toyota has sold more than 40 million of them and currently operates 16 factories worldwide that ship Corollas to 154 countries. The all-new 11th-generation North American version comes on strong with a bit more style -especially from the windshield forward -- than its broad base of customers are used to seeing. Nothing too radical, mind you, but just enough design drama to create some politely muffled ooh’s and ah’s. Where the new Corolla shines, however, is in passenger accommodations and comfort. The car has grown about four inches in overall length and in distance between the front and rear wheels. In addition a slightly wider cabin also contributes to more passenger space. Interior styling has also improved, but in a conservative way that differs from more daring competitors. Likewise, engine choices eschew anything performance-related. A 132-horsepower four-cylinder carries over from the previous generation and is connected to a six-speed manual transmission for the base CE and the S. A four-speed automatic transmission is optional on the CE, while a new continuously variable unit (CVT) is optional for S and standard for LE and LE ECO. To reduce that “rubber-band” sensation of varying engine speed that’s prevalent with many CVT applications, Toyota’s engineers added seven artificial shift points that function automatically (or can be controlled through available steering-column-mounted paddle shifters) to simulate the action of a regular automatic transmission. The LE ECO is also equipped with a 140-horsepower version of the 1.8 that’s rated at 6.5 l/100 km on the highway and 4.6 in the city, compared to the base model’s 6.9/5.2 rating with the CVT. Aside from a more efficient engine with special variable valve timing, those figures are achieved with the help of underbody panels that improve the car’s aerodynamics (and reduce highway-speed fuel consumption). As before, entrylevel Corollas don’t come with air conditioning ; that’s saved for the LE and the S. The LE ECO gets climate control. All models comes with steel wheels as standard, with aluminum wheels available only as an option. Base price (incl. destination): $17,600 Type: Four-door sedan Engine (hp): 1.8-litre DOHC I4 (132, 140 LE ECO) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmission: Six-speed manual; four-speed automatic (opt. on base); continuously variable (opt.) Mileage (city/hwy): 7.1/5.2 (6MT); 6.5/4.6 (LE ECO) Weight (kg): 1,265 Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; driver’s side knee airbag; front-passenger seat-cushion airbag; anti-lock brakes; stability control; traction control
Canadian-built wagon based on the previous Corolla platform hangs on for at least one more year, although it’s no longer available south of the border. The Matrix retains its 1.8-litre four-cylinder derived from the Corolla; previously available 158-horsepower four-cylinder is dropped for 2014, as is the optional all-wheel-drive. The Toyota Matrix started out more than a decade ago as a rebodied Pontiac Vibe (or vice-versa). Now the second-generation is wrapping up six successful years as the Toyota Corolla wagon’s sidekick and still looks attractive for its age. The flared-out fenders are bold, the body shape is crisp and the sloping roofline helps make the Matrix a bit less, well, wagon-like. The design was meant to appeal to a youthful audience, but doesn’t appear to alienate more mature buyers who are drawn to this practical wagon. The interior is resplendent with legible gauges, easy-to-use control-panel knobs and switches plus a dashboard that imparts a sense of personal space between driver and front passenger. The base 1.8-litre engine, now the sole powerplant for 2014, puts out 132 horsepower. With it your transmission choices include a five-speed manual transmission, or optional fourspeed automatic. All-wheel-drive is no longer offered on the Matrix, which is too bad for drivers living in snowy climes, which is pretty much most of the country. The base wagon comes with very little in the way of content other than the basics, but an optional Convenience Package adds air conditioning, upgraded six-speaker audio system with Bluetooth connectivity, power windows and door locks with keyless entry and cruise control. A Touring Value Package builds on the Convenience Package with 16-inch alloy (instead of steel) wheels, fog lamps and a power moonroof, while the S Package piles on the goodies with 17-inch wheels, roof-mounted spoiler, unique front and rear fascia, overhead console box and a fold-down front passenger seat that extends the Matrix’s usable stowage space. Base price (incl. destination): $18,400 Type: Four-door wagon Base engine (hp): 1.8-litre DOHC I4 (132) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmissions: Five-speed manual; four-speed automatic l/100 km (city/hwy): 7.7/6.1 (MT) Weight (kg): 1,290 Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; stability control; traction control

Z4 Auto Preview 2014 Sunday, November 3, 2013 - The Morning Star
Subaru Forester
Subaru Outback
Subaru’s all-wheel-drive wonder-wagon adds refinement, reduces fuel consumption and keeps its price on the low side. The returning 2.5-litre four-cylinder puts out 170 horsepower, while an all-new turbocharged 2.0-litre ups the pony count to 250; A six-speed manual transmission for base models, or optional continuously variable unit.
What’s good for the goose is good for the gander, meaning anything the Legacy sedan does is automatically adopted by the taller Outback wagon. A 2.5-litre four-cylinder under most hoods with six-speed manual or optional continuously variable (CVT) transmission; five-speed auto for 256-horse H6; standard all-wheel-drive.
The Forester sits on a new platform that modestly stretches the distance between the front and rear wheels for a bit more rear leg room, while a taller roofline and lower load floor add somewhat more cargo volume with the split-folding rear seat folded flat. The carryover 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine (installed in 2.5i models) generates 170 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. All Subie engines are horizontally opposed, which means that two pistons fire at 180 degrees to the other two. The design is tough, compact and provides a very low centre of gravity to limit that tippy feeling. For added punch, the 2.0XT uses a turbocharged version of the 2.0 that’s found in the BRZ sports coupe, rated at 250 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The 2.5i has a six-speed manual transmission, or a continuously variable (CVT) option. The 2.0XT only comes with the CVT, but it has what Subaru calls its “engine performance management system” with Intelligent, Sport and Sport Sharp settings. In Sport mode, the throttle becomes more responsive and the steering-column-mounted paddle shifters mimic the action of a six-speed transmission. Throttle response is further heightened in Sport Sharp mode, but the CVT provides eight “speeds” to play with. This is possible because the CVT actually has no set ratios and can be programmed to act differently at different times. Standard on the 2.0XT and available on the 2.5i with the CVT is Subaru’s X-Mode control. When activated at speeds below 20 km-h, the system adds greater control on slippery surfaces by shifting torque specifically to the wheels with grip, either front to back or side to side. The top model is the “Limited EyeSight” that comes with a big Harmon-Kardon-brand audio package and, of course, the EyeSight collision-avoidance technology that, among other things, can bring the Forester to a stop if the system detects an imminent crash.
Although Subaru discontinued the wagon version of the Legacy a number of years ago, the off-roadoriented Outback remains the closest thing available. This mid-size carrying case offers plenty of standard equipment plus peace-of-mind all-wheel-drive, yet can still be landed for about 30 large. Carrying over for 2014 is a base 2.5-litre four-cylinder that has 173 horsepower and 174 pound-feet and is rated at 8.6 l/100 km city and 6.5 highway when fitted with the optional continuously variable transmission with column-mounted paddle shifters that mimic six gear ratios (a six-speed manual remains standard). But if towing and hauling is a priority, the Outback has your back with the returning 3.6-liter H6 with 256 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque. Both engines employ a horizontally opposed layout, where one bank of pistons is positioned 180 degrees to the other, rather than the standard inline and upright design. The result is engine mass that’s closer to the road, lowering the Outback’s -- and all other Subaru’s, for that matter -- centre of gravity. All wagon trims arrive well equipped and come with a unique roof-rail system where the crossbars fold parallel to the rails when not in use, reducing wind noise and drag. There’s also an electronic parking brake that holds the vehicle in place on inclines until the gas pedal is pushed. One of the Outback’s neater options is called EyeSight, which is now available on more models for 2014. The system intertwines adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking and blind-spot monitoring into one tidy package. EyeSight activates to slow down or completely stop the Outback’s momentum if it seems to be traveling too rapidly toward any object, including a slower or stopped car or a pedestrian, regardless of traffic speed. It will also warn the driver should the car start to change lanes without the driver flicking the turn-signal stalk.
Base price (incl. destination): $27,650 Type: Four-door wagon Base engine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC H4 (170) Optional engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC H4, turbocharged (250) Layout: Front-engine, all-wheel-drive Transmission: Six-speed manual; continuously variable with opt. paddle shifters l/100 km (city/highway): 9.4/7.1 (2.5, MT) Weight (kg): 1,480 Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; front-knee airbag; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control
Base price (incl. destination): $30,100 Type: Four-door, all-wheel-drive wagon Base engine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC H4 (173) Optional engine (hp): 3.6-litre DOHC H6 (256) Layout: Front engine, all-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual; continuously variable (opt.); five-speed automatic (std. 3.6) l/100 km (city/highway): 8.6/6.5 (2.5, CVT) Weight (kg): 1,550 Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control

Z6 Auto Preview 2014 Sunday, November 3, 2013 - The Morning Star
Kia Rondo
Kia Forte
Kia’s multi-tasking Mazda5-fighter returns from a brief hiatus with nifty styling with an eager and thrifty drivetrain. Solitary engine is a 2.4-litre inline-four-cylinder; six-speeds of the manual and optional automatic persuasions are offered.
Good design can’t be translated unless the build quality and materials are first rate. The Forte sedan and Forte5 hatchback showcase this philosophy and display designer Peter Schreyer’s vision for compact models.
There aren’t many compact wagons that can get away with packaging three rows of seats that real people can actually sit in. The only other example that springs to mind is the Mazda5. The original Rondo was a decent competitor, but the new version is better looking, more functional and does more with a litre of gasoline. Fortunately it’s no longer the anonymously styled bubble of a wagon, but a smart-looking squared-off multi-purpose rig that makes an ideal grocery getter and kid picker-upper. Called the Carens elsewhere in Kia’s vast distribution universe, the Rondo is exclusive to the Canadian market in that it remains out of reach for U.S. residents. It’s hard to fathom why not since it has a lot to offer, starting with a well-planned interior, that, when not transporting people around can be converted to a workhorse of cargo carrier. The second row is a tri-folding unit, while the optional third row is a 50:50 bench. Both rows fold as flat as a bowling lane and offer an impressive variety of people and cargo permutations. However there’s only one choice when it comes to powerplants: a 164-horsepower four-cylinder that can be had with a six-speed manual transmission, or optional six-speed automatic with steering-wheel paddle shifters. The base Rondo LX arrives well turned-out with about as much equipment as most Canadians would ever want or need. The rest can move up to the EX that adds push-button start (spares you from the effort of turning a key), backup camera, rain-sensing windshield wipers, portable cargo flashlight and a power extendable driver’s seat leg cushion. Along with the third-row seat, the top-end EX Luxury includes an electronic parking brake, 18-inch wheels (16-inchers are standard), leather seat covers that are heated and ventilated in front. A voice-activated navigation system and a premium audio package head the list of extra-cost add-ons.
The Forte for 2014 has become fashionably sophisticated when it used to be play-it-safe conservative. That’s even more apparent when it comes to the new Forte5 hatch that followed the sedan’s 2013 calendar-year launch by a few months. Dialed back somewhat, though, is the Forte’s power. The new base 1.8-litre engine pumps out 148 horsepower and 131 pound-feet of torque, while the optional 2.0litre four-cylinder produces 173 horsepower and 154 pound-feet of torque. For Forte5 buyers, the 2.0 is standard while a turbocharged 1.6-litre four cylinder is optional. It spools out 201 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission, or optional six-speed automatic can be connected to all three powerplants. Spending time aboard the Forte or Forte5 will prove comforting for passengers and especially pleasing for the driver who faces a clearly legible, intuitively laid-out dashboard and control panel. He or she also has command over the level of steering effort with the Forte’s optional Flex Steer system. With it, the electric power steering can be adjusted to Comfort, Normal and Sport settings, with the latter offering the least amount of assist. Of the Forte’s four trim levels, the starting-point LX leans to the simpler side of the ledger with its smaller engine, 15-inch steel wheels, basic audio system and the lack of cruise control and a keyless remote entry button on the fob. Move up to the EX (the starting point on the Forte5) and along with adding the LX’s missing items, you can count on dual-zone climate control, a Microsoft-powered infotainment system, backup camera, glovebox cooler and 16-inch alloy wheels. The Forte5 SX adds the turbo, along with plenty of convenience content, but can only be had with the six-speed stick.

Z8 Auto Preview 2014 Sunday, November 3, 2013 - The Morning Star
Ford Focus Ford’s mainstream compact is now available with smoking hot ST performance, or, oppositely, electric economy. 160-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder connected to a five-speed manual transmission or optional twin-clutch automated manual; ST adds turbo and extra gear to handle 252 horses; optional all-electric drivetrain with 143-horsepower motor. The ST performance model takes all the positives of the Focus and then adds a list of improvements. The 2.0-litre EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder produces 252 horsepower and even features overboost with a giant slug of mid-range torque added. The ST is still front-wheel-drive, but uses a stiffer suspension, bigger and stickier tires and a variety of electronic systems to make it a true back-road hero. The ST gets unique parts inside and out, including more supportive seats and only comes with a six-speed manual transmission. The ST’s “green” counterpoint is the Focus Electric that features a 107-kilowatt (143-horsepower) motor and lithium-ion battery pack that can deliver a claimed range of 120 kilometres. Like the ST, the Focus Electric stands out from regular Focii thanks to an Aston Martin-esque grille and headlights, along with special wheels, low-rolling-resistance tires and other wind-cheating aids. Both new Focus models only come in four-door hatchback form, but the “regular” cars can be had as sedans. That’s because it’s the only style available if you order the price-leader “S” that comes with manual climate control, tilt/telescopic steering wheel and basic four-speaker audio system and 15-inch steel wheels. For the fuel conscious who don’t want to stretch up to the Electric, the optional SFE package is rated at 4.8 l/100 km on the highway. The standard 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine is rated at 160 horsepower. A five-speed manual transmission is standard on all models, while optional is a six-speed dualclutch automated manual gearbox. All models arrive with torque vectoring, which is a system that applies light braking pressure to slow down the inside wheel when the car is turning. This helps the Focus attack the corners with more precision by reducing the tendency to plow straight ahead. Base price (incl. destination): $16,550 Type: Four-door sedan; four-door hatchback Base engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4 (160) Optional engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (252); 107-kilowatt electric motor (143) Layout: Front-engine, front- wheel-drive Transmissions: Five-speed manual; six-speed manual (ST); six-speed automated manual; single-speed controller (electric) l/100 km (city/highway): 7.3/5.2 (2.0, MT) Weight (kg): 1,340 Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control
Ford Escape Lovely to look at and just as lovely to drive, the latest Ford Escape is now a ubiquitous sight. Plenty of engine choices, all of the four-cylinder variety in the name of fuel economy. The sleeker second-generation’s radically different sheetmetal is just one reason why the Escape is more popular than ever. Its slightly larger dimensions mean greater rear-seat room plus slightly more passenger and cargo volume with the rear seat in place or folded flat. The floor shifter’s position at the base of the dashboard partially blocks the heating/ventilation controls, but makes the area designated for cupholders and armrest/storage more accessible. The up-level Titanium model features well-bolstered front seats that are a major advancement over that of earlier Escapes. The base front-wheel-drive S model runs with a 168-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder, while the front- and all-wheel-drive SE designation uses a 178-horsepower 1.6-litre turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder. A 237-horsepower turbo four-cylinder is standard on the SEL and Titanium trims. A hybrid version won’t be available this time around since Ford’s C-Max hybrid wagon uses that drive system. Sadly for a few “Escapees”, the six-speed manual gearbox has shifted away from the Escape lineup, leaving only a six-speed automatic as the sole transmission. A new “Intelligent” all-wheel-drive system can be ordered with the turbocharged models. It continually assesses road conditions and driver inputs “about 20 times faster than the blink of an eye” and can shift up to 100 per cent of the available power to either the front or rear wheels for maximum grip. The Escape is the first Ford to offer both Torque Vectoring Control and Curve Control to help distribute the correct amount of power to each wheel when cornering so that the vehicle maintains its intended path. But the most unique option is the power lifgate that automatically opens and closes when you shake your foot beneath the bumper. For 2014 it can be ordered with an integrated trailer hitch. Base price (incl. destination): $26,300 Type: Four-door compact tall wagon Base engine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC I4 (168) Optional engine (hp): 1.6-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (173); 2.0-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (237) Layout: Front-engine, front- /four-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed automatic l/100 km (city/highway): 9.5/6.3 (2.5, FWD) Weight (kg): 1,590 Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; stability control; traction control
Ford F150 Ford Super Duty Ford’s Super Duty is the best-selling HD truck around, but that doesn’t mean it’ll stand pat during a quiet year... These powerplants consist of a 6.2-litre gas V8 and 6.7-litre turbo-diesel that produces 800 pound-feet of torque; six-speed automatic transmissions connect to both. Every Super Duty gets larger brakes for the 2014 model year that are more effective at shedding heat (there’s a larger parking brake too). That means payload capacity is up to 3,290 kilograms while the conventional towing capacity tops out at 8,390 kilograms, which it claims is class-leading. Ford also aims its Super Duty trucks toward the higher end of the market by adding a Platinum trim to the SD line with unique styling, different 20-inch wheels, chrome slathered everywhere, while inside features wood trim and high-grain leather cover nearly every surface. Niceties include standard power-adjustable pedals, a rear-view camera, remote start and power telescoping mirrors. The Platinum also gets Ford’s SD-specific version of MyFord Touch, which has larger buttons and knobs for secondary controls that can easily be used with work gloves on. Otherwise, the standard 6.2-litre gasoline V8 that rules the roost with 385 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque remains unchanged. Optional is an equally fresh Ford-developed 6.7-litre V8 turbo-diesel that generates a flat 400 horsepower and 800 poundfeet of torque. The engine can run B20 fuel, which contains 80 per cent petroleum diesel mixed with 20 per cent bio-diesel. Both powerplants are connected to six-speed automatic transmissions. For turbo-diesel applications, there’s an available “Live Drive” power take off (PTO) unit, consisting of an extra transmission output gear that can control accessories such as a snow plow, tow-truck lift or even a dump-truck-style box. Other newfound equipment includes trailer-sway and roll stability control to help keep you and your load shiny-side-up. Hill Start Assist keeps you from rolling backward while stopped on an incline and Hill Decent Control holds the SD at a set speed while traveling down a steep grade. Base price (incl. destination): $37,100 (2013) Type: Two- /four-door heavy-duty pickup Base engine (hp): 6.2-litre SOHC V8 (385) Optional engine (hp): 6.7-litre OHV V8, turbo-diesel (400) Layout: Front-engine, rear- /four-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed automatic l/100 km (city/highway): n/a Weight (kg): 2,670 Safety: Front airbags; anti-lock brakes
With an all-new F-150 coming late next year, the 2014 version makes the most of a few well-deserved tweaks; new Tremor is a twin-turbocharged sport truck that brings back memories of the long-gone SVT Lightning. The F-150 borrows the 3.7-litre V6 and 5.0litre V8 from the Mustang, along with a turbocharged 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 from the Flex/ Taurus SHO; the 6.2-litre V8 from the off-road SVT Raptor can be had in upscale models. Ford is rolling out a few small changes to its best-selling pickup. The segment-first high-intensity-discharge headlights are now standard on every trim level, except the base models, while power-telescoping/folding towing mirrors inspired by the Super Duty are available too. All models get their own trim-specific grilles, bumpers and wheel designs; other changes for 2014 include a new grille for the FX package and chrome wheels for XLT and STX. Those wishing for a return of the SVT Lightning sport truck can now have the next best thing: the 2014 Tremor. It’s regular-cab short-box sport-truck powered by the 3.5-litre “EcoBoost” turbocharged V6. It uses flat-black accents outside, 20-inch wheels with low-profile tires and a steep rear-end gear for the best possible acceleration. At the other end of the spectrum, the Limited is available only as a SuperCrew four-door cab, the body-colour moldings, brightwork and 22-inch wheels are set off by an interior with heated and cooled red-and-black leather seats, aluminum trim and piano black accents that complement the new MyFord Touch screen on the dash. The Limited is exclusively powered by the popular 3.5-litre EcoBoost twin-turbocharged V6 with 365 horsepower. Those wanting traditional V8 power are spoiled, too, with 5.0-litre or 6.2-litre options readily available in most other trims. There are four box lengths and three cab sizes, not to mention both rear- and four-wheel-drive availability. A 411-horsepower 6.2-litre V8 is standard in the F-150 SVT Raptor 4x4. Standard gear includes special shock absorbers that stiffen as they compress to keep the truck from bottoming out or becoming too tippy while cornering. The giant 35-inch-tall all-terrain rubber has been mounted to 17-inch wheels that are positioned farther outboard from the fenders to a point where the Raptor’s width has been increased by more than 18 centimetres. Base price (incl. destination): $21,600; $57,600 (Raptor)(2013) Type: Two- /four-door pickup Base engine (hp): 3.7-litre DOHC V6 (302) Optional engines (hp): 3.5-litre DOHC V6, turbocharged (365); 5.0-litre DOHC V8 (360), 6.2-litre SOHC V8 (411) Layout: Front-engine, rear- /four-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed automatic l/100 km (city/highway): 12.7/8.9 (3.7, 4x2) Weight (kg): 2,125 Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags with rollover protection; anti-lock brakes; stability control

Z10 Auto Preview 2014 Sunday, November 3, 2013 - The Morning Star
Nissan Pathfinder After introducing a three-rows-of-seats car-based Pathfinder in 2013, Nissan now offers a fuel-saving Hybrid model. Regular versions use a single 260-horsepower V6; new Hybrid comes with a supercharged four-cylinder and electric motor with the same power and torque as the V6; both front- and four-wheel-drive models work with a continuously variable transmission. A dramatic re-imaging of Nissan’s legendary Pathfinder in 2013 saw a serious weight-loss regimen. It shed about 110 kilograms (145 kilograms for 4x4 units) compared to the old model. This included converting to a unitized (frameless) platform shared with Nissan’s Infiniti JX/QX60 luxury wagon. Nissan’s 3.5-litre V6 that generates 260 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque will be the engine of choice, teamed with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that replaces the previous five-speed automatic. Front-wheel-drive versions are rated at 10.5 l/100 km in the city and 7.7 on the highway, while four-wheel-drive Pathfinders achieve 10.8/7.9. While those are serious improvements over previous Pathfinders, there’s a new fuel-saving option for 2014: a gasoline-electric hybrid. It uses a supercharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder that’s paired with a 15-kilowatt electric motor to deliver 250 horsepower and 243 pound-feet of torque. Fuel efficiency is improved to 9.4/8.7 with similar drops for four-wheel-drive. A compact lithium-ion battery is stowed under the third-row seat and doesn’t affect cabin or cargo space at all. Driving range is also extended to more than 850 kilometres given that both Pathfinders share the same size fuel tank. Nissan’s All-Mode 4x4-i option allows you to select either two- or four-wheel-drive, or engage the Auto setting and let the All-Mode make the call based on which tire(s) has traction. There is a penalty to be paid for the new Pathfinder’s weight and power decrease in that the maximum towing capacity has been curtailed to 2,270 kilograms from 3,175 (1,590 for the Hybrid). Visually, Hybrid models are differentiated by LED taillights and subtle badges along with different wheel designs. As for passengers, there’s a third row reclining seat and a second row with five inches of fore and aft travel, while a portion of the split-second bench slides forward for easier third-row access, even if there’s a child seat attached. The base Pathfinder S arrives with tri-zone climate control and 14 cup/bottle holders. The SV (which is the base Hybrid trim) adds roof rails and a rearview monitor while leather-covered seats, remote engine start and a power liftgate are SL highlights. An up-level sound system, Around View camera, panorama moonroof and a navigation system are on the menu, depending on the depth of your pockets. Base price (incl. destination): $31,300 Type: Four-door tall wagon Base engine (hp): 3.5-litre DOHC V6 (260) Optional engines (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC I4, supercharged w/electric assist (250) Layout: Front-engine, two- /four-wheel-drive Transmissions: Continuously variable l/100 km (city/highway): 10.5/7.7 (FWD) Weight (kg): 1,900 Safety: Front airbags, side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; stability control; traction control
Nissan Versa Note Smaller than the car it replaces, the Versa Note used smart packaging to make it feel bigger on the inside. Same 1.6-litre four-cylinder as the outgoing wagon, but less weight means better fuel economy; manual and continuously variable transmission options. The original Versa wagon -- a 2007-model-year arrival -- was all about low price and fuel efficiency. Its replacement, called the Versa Note, expands on that theme by actually shrinking in size, although not where it really counts. It’s shorter in overall length by more than 15 centimetres (it’s 32 centimetres shorter than the sedan) without reducing the distance between the front and rear wheels or the interior volume, which has actually increased slightly. Curtailing the size contributes to a new car that’s 135 kilograms lighter than the retired wagon. Virtually all of the shrinkage occurs ahead of the front wheels where the aerodynamic nose slopes downward in a way that’s reminiscent of the Honda Fit. Both the Versa sedan and Versa Note wagon lead their respective entry-level categories in cabin space, but the Note’s clever interior packaging gives it a clear advantage. Open the hatch and the load-floor height is three centimetres lower than its 2012 predecessor (there was no 2013 wagon). An optional adjustable-height load floor called “Hide-N-Divide” can be raised to match the height of the rear seats when they’re folded flat, all the while creating a hidden storage spot below. Like the sedan, the dash and door panels are on the plasticky side, but the fit and finish is generally solid and doesn’t seem out of place on a vehicle that emphasizes a low base price. The Note’s 109-horsepower 1.6-litre engine comes through with an estimated 6.1 l/100 km in the city and 4.8 on the highway. That’s with the optional continuously variable transmission. For comparison, the Note’s standard five-speed manual transmission earns a 7.4/5.4 rating. Helping out fuel economy are grille shutters that automatically close at highway speeds and reduce aerodynamic drag by keeping air out of the engine compartment, thereby reducing the parachute effect. The three trim levels begin with the $14,700 1.6 S that, except for air conditioning and a basic radio/CD player, is pretty plain. You can add options or step up to the SV with its upgraded seats, hands-free Bluetooth wireless connectivity and other niceties. The $18,200 SL trim is required if you want a navigation system or Nissan’s “Around View Monitor” that shows a 360-degree depiction of the vehicle in relation to its surroundings. Base price (incl. destination): $14,700 Type: Sub-compact four-door hatchback Base engine (hp): 1.6-litre DOHC I4 (109) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmissions: Five-speed manual; continuously variable (opt.) l/100 km (city/highway): 6.1/4.8 (CVT) Weight (kg): 1,115 Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control
Nissan Altima Nissan is already improving its fifth-generation Altima with an eye to value and technology; twodoor Coupe not answering the bell for 2014. Four-cylinder and V6 engines with continuously variable transmissions and impressively low fuel performance. The Altima has a graceful shape that’s sure to find favour with potential owners, while the well-appointed interior features NASA-inspired “zero-gravity” front seats for greater comfort. Cabin noise is reduced thanks to sound-absorbing materials around the instrument panel, floor and roof areas and the upgraded engine mounts that improve isolation. The base 2.5-litre four-cylinder delivers 182 horsepower while a continuously variable transmission (CVT) offers fewer moving parts, significantly reduced friction and electronic-control improvements so that it more closely mimics a traditional multi-speed automatic (less noise). Nissan claims fuel performance of 7.4 l/100 km in the city and 5.0 on the highway, compared with 8.8/6.2 for the previous Altima. The Altima’s optional 270-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 remains unchanged, but it also benefits from the same CVT upgrade and is now rated at 9.3 l/100 km city and the city and 6.4 highway. Altima also boasts Active Understeer Control that applies light braking pressure to the inside wheel in a corner to counteract the car’s natural tendency to continue in a straight line. Also assisting the driver is Nissan’s Easy Fill Tire Alert that was initially installed in the Quest minivan. Instead of trying to decipher your tire pressure gauge (especially daunting at night), the horn will sound when the correct amount of inflation has been reached. Finally, the Altima’s headlights automatically turn on after the wipers have completed four cycles, which helps other drivers see you during downpour conditions. There are actually five Altima trims, but for 2014 several add-on packages have been introduced, renamed or had their contents changed, but nothing that would drastically change the car’s desirability. Base price (incl. destination): $25,000 Type: Four-door sedan; two-door coupe Base engine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC I4 (182) Optional engines (hp): 3.5-litre DOHC V6 (270) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual; continuously variable (opt.) l/100 km (city/highway): 7.4/5.0 (2.5, CVT) Weight (kg): 1,410 Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; stability control; traction control
Nissan Rogue The second-generation Rogue increases only slightly in size, but it’s enough to offer an optional third-row seat; with that, total seating capacity rises to seven passengers from five. A 170-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder carries over with an updated continuously variable transmission; all-wheel-drive offered for all trim levels. For its encore performance, the second-gen version makes significant strides in interior and exterior styling. The latter comes in the form of an available third-row seat. Sure, it’s tight on space back there and, when deployed, pretty much wipes out any semblance of cargo space. But it’s also there when you need it and makes the Rogue practically the only small-and-tall wagon in its class to offer one. Physically the Rogue has shrunk by two centimetres in overall length (attributed to reduced front and rear overhangs), while the distance between the front and rear wheels is up by one centimetre and overall height has been upped by three centimetres. The sheetmetal that’s attached to the Rogue’s all-new platform is a bit bolder looking than before, although it might not be quite as attractive. Perhaps that’s why Nissan is keeping the previous top-selling model around for one more season, labeling it the Rogue Select and selling it alongside the new Rogue at a lower (by about $2,000) price point. The standard powerplant continues to be a 170-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder. It’s matched to an improved continuously variable transmission with a sport mode for snappier performance. Nissan has focused on reducing friction (by a claimed 40 per cent) and improving the transmission’s belt and pulley system for better operating efficiency. That seems to have paid off since the new Rogue’s mileage estimate of 8.8 l/100 km in the city and 6.8 on the highway beats the previous 9.0/7.0 rating. All models -- S, SV, and SL -- continue to be available with all-wheel-drive. Base price (incl. destination): $25,500 Type: Four-door compact sport-utility vehicle Base engine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC I4 (170) Transmissions: Continuously variable l/100 km (city/highway): 8.8/6.8 (est.) Weight (kg): 1,490 Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control

Volkswagen Jetta
Volkswagen Tiquan
For most families, this will be all the Volkswagen they’ll ever need; A new turbo engine and everyone gets the GLI’s more sophisticated independent rear suspension; Diesel option has great power and fuel economy, but there’s also a gas-electric hybrid.
The cool customer holds five people and is elegant looking and fun to drive with a standard six-speed manual transmission. A 200-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with your choice of six-speed manual or automatic transmissions; still no turbo-diesel option, but VW’s 4MOTION all-wheel-drive is offered on all but the base model.
The Jetta has clearly become the variety performer in VW’s lineup. For 2014, no fewer than six different powertrains (including a gasoline-electric team in the Hybrid) are offered, which makes VW’s compact brand the epitome of versatility. It’s also the first sedan model in VW’s lineup to begin the 2014 model year with a newly available 170-horsepower 1.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that is torquier and better on gas than the 170-horsepower five-cylinder that lingers as an option in lower trim levels. Also lingering is the older 115-horsepower four-cylinder in the price-leader models while the optional 210-horsepower turbo-four (up 10 ponies for 2014) continues in the GLI. The 140-horsepower turbo-diesel is also back for 2014 and rated at 6.7 l/100 km in the city and 4.6 l/100 km on the highway. Not to be forgotten is the impressive Jetta Hybrid that’s uniquely teamed with a seven-speed automated manual gearbox (DSG). The Hybrid can run for 1.9 kilometres on electricity alone at speeds up to 70 km-h and accelerate to 60 mph (96 km-h) from rest in less than nine seconds. For 2014, all Jettas receive a more performance-oriented multi-link rear suspension that previously was exclusive to the Jetta GLI (think of VW Golf-based GTI with a trunk instead of a rear hatch). The multi-link probably won’t be noticed by most Jetta drivers, but anyone who loves to carve through twisty two-lane back roads should feel the difference in the car’s handling dynamics. Base price (incl. destination): $16,400 (2013); $29,000 (GLI, 2013); $29,300 (Hybrid, 2013) Type: Four-door sedan Base engine (hp): 2.0-liter DOHC I4 (115) Optional engines (hp): 2.5-liter DOHC I5 (170); 1.8-liter DOHC four-cylinder, turbocharged (170); 2.0-liter SOHC four-cylinder, turbo-diesel (140); 2.0-liter DOHC four-cylinder, turbocharged (210, GLI); 1.4-liter DOHC four-cylinder, turbocharged, plus 27-horsepower electric motor (170 net, hybrid) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmissions: Five-speed manual; six-speed manual (GLI and TDI); six-speed automatic (opt. on 2.5, 1.8); six-speed automated manual (DSG, opt. on GLI and TDI); seven-speed automated manual (DSG, hybrid) l/100 km (city/highway): 9.1/6.0 (2.0, MT); 6.7/4.6 (TDI); 4.5/4.2 (Hybrid) Weight (kg): 1,270 Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; (opt.); anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control
It’s impossible not to like the Tiguan, but with competitors offering similar style and comfort for the same or less money, this VW plays to a tough audience. Physically, the Tiguan (the splicing of the words tiger and iguana) competes in the same class as the Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue, Ford Escape and Kia Sportage, to name just a few. Equally sharp looking is the interior that carries with the high-end-style dash, cleanly tailored seats and premium carpeting. Rear passengers will appreciate the six inches of fore/aft travel as well as the reclining 60/40 split seat back. For more cargo space, the rear seat back, as well as the front passenger bucket, can fold flat. The space is made even more generous due to the extra-low load floor. Tiguan is powered by a 200-horse 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder connected to a six-speed manual transmission or optional six-speed automatic. Tiguan runs the spectrum with three trim levels -- Trendline, Comfortline and Highline -and plenty of base equipment of the air/cruise/power variety as well as an electronic parking brake (no more reefing on an old-fashioned hand lever) and hill hold control for manual-transmission Tiguans that keeps you from rolling backward as you transition from the brake to the gas pedal. Along with VW’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive (which is only available with the automatic transmission), the options list includes rear-seat side-impact airbags, a 300-watt premium audio package, touchscreen navigation, rear-view park assist, bigger wheels and an oversized moonroof. Base price (incl. destination): $26,400 Type: Four-door tall wagon Engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (200) Layout: Front engine, front- /all-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual; six-speed automatic (opt.) l/100 km (city/highway): 12.0/7.7 (MT) Weight (kg): 1,540 Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; rear side-impact airbags (opt.); anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control

Jeep Cherokee
Anti-Freeze
The Cherokee name returns following a lengthy hiatus, but it’s dressed up in more contemporary sheetmetal that belies its ability to still navigate difficult terrain. A Fiat-based 2.4-litre four-cylinder is supplemented by a 3.2-litre V6 option; standard nine-speed automatic transmission helps reduce fuel consumption, while three optional 4x4 systems supply a range of traction needs.

Following the Jeep Liberty’s retirement, Chrysler-Fiat’s off-road division has resurrected the Cherokee name, but with a significant shift in direction. Instead of the brick-like original, the Cherokee has some seriously modern sculpting going on. The pinched and pointy-nose grille says plenty about the risk that Jeep’s designers have undertaken in creating the new Cherokee. Then there are the eyelet headlights that would have been impossible to imagine on any production car, Jeep or otherwise...until now, that is. The interior is also as modern as the outside. All but the most basic Cherokee models feature 12.7- or 21.3-centimetre touch-screens, depending on the trim level, that operate climate, communications and infotainment systems. Base models get a Fiat-designed 2.4-litre four-cylinder worth 184 horsepower and 171 pound-feet of torque. Optional is an all-new 3.2-litre V6 that’s rated at 271 horses. It’s a subset of Chrysler’s 3.6-litre V6 that’s the base engine in the larger Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Ram pickup. In the Cherokee’s case, ordering the V6 provides a 2,045-kilogram towing capacity. Both engines are connected to nine-speed automatic transmissions, which is the first use of that gear changer in any Chrysler product. Front-wheel-drive is the norm, but buyers can choose from three different four-wheel-drive setups, depending on trim level. Active Drive I, optional in the Sport, North and Limited editions, is a single-speed unit that kicks in automatically whenever tire slip is detected. Active Drive II, also available in North and Limited, comes with a two-speed transfer case and is designed for off-road use with either the four- or six-cylinder engines. But for rock crawling and boulder hopping, Active Drive Lock, as the name implies, locks up the rear differential in low range. This system is standard in the Cherokee Trailhawk, which is a “Trail Rated” rig outfitted with an off-road suspension (increases ride height by an inch), skid plates, unique alloy wheels with all-terrain rubber, blacked-out trim and a full-size spare tire. All 4x4 systems include Selec-Terrain traction control with five different settings to match the kind of ground you’re covering (snow, sand, mud, etc.). Base price (incl. destination): $25,200 Type: Four-door sport-utility vehicle Base engine (hp): 2.4-litre DOHC I4 (184) Optional engines (hp): 3.2-litre DOHC V6 (271) Layout: Front-engine, rear- /four-wheel-drive Transmissions: Nine-speed automatic l/100 km (city/highway): 9.6/6.4 (2.4 FWD) Weight (kg): 1,640 Safety: Front airbags; front/rear side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; front knee airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control

Auto Preview 2014 Sunday, November 3, 2013 - The Morning Star Z13
Jeep Grand Cherokee The legendary Grand Cherokee gets better looking while also using less fuel with all-new turbo-diesel engine; stoplight-racer SRT gets standard launch control and new transmission for faster getaways. New turbo-diesel V6 has more torque than a gasoline “Hemi” V8, but base 3.6-litre V6 is perfect for all-around use; optional 360-horse V8 is a towing and heavy-hauling favourite; the SRT8’s 470-horsepower “Hemi” V8 lights a rocket under the Grand Cherokee’s platform, if that’s your thing; eight-speed automatics now standard across the board. Although now well into its fourth generation, the rugged five-passenger Grand Cherokee remains one of the most popular vehicles in its class. While GC’s on- and off-road agility is largely attributable to the various suspension components it shares with the Mercedes-Benz ML-class tall wagon, the Jeep is tuned very differently. Under the hood, Jeep uses the corporate 290-horsepower 3.6-litre V6 while the 360-horsepower 5.7-litre “Hemi” V8 is optional. However, Jeep is finally reintroducing a turbo-diesel engine in the GC for 2014. Although it’s similar to the last diesel, the 3.0-litre “EcoDiesel” (240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque) is sourced from Italian firm VM Motori rather than Mercedes-Benz. The EcoDiesel can deliver 9.8 l/100 km in the city and 7.0 on the highway, versus 12.4 and 8.3 for the V6. Part of those savings are attributable to the new eight-speed automatic transmission, even in the high-powered SRT8. With a 470-horsepower 6.4litre “Hemi”, 20-inch wheels with stickier road-biased tires, upgraded brakes, active suspension and active limited-slip differentials that are now re-tuned to send more power to the rear. Jeep states this speed brat will reach 60 mph (96 km-h) in less than five seconds, which is made even easier in 2014 thanks to standard launch control. Other more “normal” GC models -- Laredo, Limited, Overland and Summit, which is new for 2014 - come in standard four-wheel-drive. The Summit is a full-on luxury model that eclipses even the already spangly Overland and includes adaptive HID headlights and dual exhaust tips, while inside everything is slathered in “Natura Plus” leather, open-pore wood trim, a faux-suede headliner and dual-pane moonroof. Finally, Summit features an 825-watt 19-speaker Harmon Kardon surround-sound system that’ll replicate any music perfectly. The best 4x4 system is Quadra Drive II that includes Jeep’s Selec-Terrain control with settings for Sand/Mud; Snow; and Rock for off-road terrain plus a Sport setting for dry pavement. Base price (incl. destination): $41,700; $64,700 (SRT) Type: Four-door sport-utility vehicle Base engine (hp): 3.6-litre DOHC V6 (290)) Optional engine (hp): 5.7-litre OHV V8 (360); 3.0-litre DOHC V6, turbo-diesel (240); 6.7-litre OHV V8 (470, SRT) Layout: Front-engine, four-wheel-drive Transmissions: Eight-speed automatic l/100 km (city/highway): 12.4/8.3 (3.6) Weight (kg): 2,030 Safety: Front airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; stability control

Z14 Auto Preview 2014 Sunday, November 3, 2013 - The Morning Star
Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Revised Chevrolet Camaro gets smoother front end, but nearly everything underneath has been changed; reborn track-focused Z28 joins supercharged ZL1 and lookalike 1LE. The base models are motivated by a 3.6-litre V6 with 323 horsepower; SS and 1LE get a 6.2-litre V8 now with 432 horsepower; new Z28 gets Corvette-Z06-based 7.0-litre V8 with 500 horsepower; ZL1 has a 580-horsepower version of the Corvette ZR1 engine and magnificent suspension. For 2014, Chevrolet is giving its iconic Camaro a mid-cycle update that’s aimed at not only improving its presence, but also its aerodynamic efficiency. Everything front of the A-pillar is new, with slimmer headlights, and on SS models, there’s a functional hood scoop. The taillights are slimmer and stretched more horizontally, there’s a faux rear diffuser and a new trunklid too. Camaro’s lineup grows by one also, thanks to the re-born Z28. This track-focused sweetheart has all the right tricks, including thinner window glass and carbon-ceramic Brembo-brand brake discs that help it lop off 140 kilograms of fat, along with suspension changes and ultra-sticky tires that help generate more than 1.05 g while cornering. The coup de gras is the Corvette Z06-derived 7.0-litre V8 that delivers “at least” 500 horsepower to a six-speed manual transmission. Compared with the 580-horsepower supercharged ZL1, the Z28 is actually quicker around a track and that’s saying a lot. The 1LE, which was introduced in for 2013, is similarly grin-inducing thanks to ZL1-spec handling, but it has the same 432-horsepower (up from 426) 6.2-litre V8 shared with the SS. Six-speed manuals are the choice for most hi-po Camaros, although SS models can get a six-speed automatic (horsepower drops to 400 in those cars). The base cars are still motivated by a 323-horsepower 3.6litre V6 fitted with either a six-speed manual transmission or optional six-speed automatic. SS models add beefier Brembo-brand brakes, lowered ride height, sport suspension, new-style 20-inch wheels (redesigned 18- and 19-inchers are standard) and a performance mode setting for the traction- and stability-control systems, which are vital to preventing this rear-drive machine from becoming too tail happy. The convertible is available with the V6, the 6.2-litre V8 and, for more drama, in ZL1 guise. No matter, it’s a great-looking shell for an interior that’s a mix of new and classic themes that will delight die-hard Camaro-istes; they’ll positively swoon over the twin centre gauge pods and console-mounted dials like those found in early Camaros, while some trims get a new colour head-up display. Base price (incl. destination): $29,450 (2013) Type: Two-door sports coupe/convertible Base engine (hp): 3.6-litre DOHC V6 (323) Optional engine (hp): 6.2-litre OHV V8 (432-400, SS); 7.0-litre V8 (500, Z28); 6.2-litre OHV V8, supercharged (580, ZL1) Layout: Front-engine, rear-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual; six-speed automatic (opt.) l/100 km (city/highway): 12.3/6.8 (V6, MT) Weight (kg): 1,700 Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control
Chevrolet Cruze Diesel A diesel Chevrolet? And it’s not a pickup? Base 1.8-litre four-cylinder and optional 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engines both make 138 horsepower, but the turbo has way more low-speed spunk; all-new 2.0-litre turbo-diesel offers 151 horsepower and the torque of a gasoline V6; both manual and optional automatic transmissions are of the six-speed variety. Not content with only offering a gas-sipping Eco model, Chevrolet is going against the grain by also introducing a new turbo-diesel engine for its compact Cruze sedan. The Clean Turbo-Diesel engine offers more horsepower and torque (151 and 264 respectively) than either of the gasoline engines, and the latter figure can reach 280 pound-feet for brief bursts of flat-out acceleration. While its zero-to-100-km-h time in the mid-eight-second range will be enjoyed by some, everyone will appreciate the 1,100-plus-kilometre cruising range, thanks to a headline 4.2-l/100 km highway fuel-economy figure. The diesel only comes one way: starting at $26,300 (including destination) and with equipment equivalent to a 2LT trim in regular Cruzes. That means leather seats, heated front seats, a nicer instrument cluster with chrome trim, 17-inch wheels, rear spoiler and more. Most Cruze trims include the MyLink radio (that streams music via Bluetooth), voice recognition and compatibility with Pandora Internet radio. An 18-centimetre colour touch-screen stereo with navigation and USB port can be had, while driver convenience packages on most trims include a number of useful options such as power seats, auto-dimming rearview mirrors, rear-vision camera and more. The base car is equipped with a 1.8-litre four-cylinder that produces 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque. Move up to the LT and LTZ you’ll get and a smaller (less is more here) 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that’s also rated at 138 horsepower but with 25 pound-feet more torque than the base engine. The 1.8 offers a choice of a six-speed manual transmission, or optional six-speed automatic, while the 1.4 turbo is only available with the automatic. Continuing unchanged is the Eco model that uses the turbo engine with low-rolling-resistance tires, tweaks to the aerodynamics and other fuel-saving measures. The result? Fueleconomy ratings of 7.2/4.6 with taller ratios in the six-speed manual and a still-impressive 7.7/5.0 with the automatic. In addition, the standard stability control includes a rollover-sensing program that will deploy the airbags if it detects the car is about to tip over. Notable new safety options include available rear park assist, blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert, which is really useful when backing out in a busy parking lot. Base price (incl. destination): $17,450 Type: Four-door sedan Base engine (hp): 1.8-litre DOHC I4 (138) Optional engine (hp): 1.4-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (138); 2.0-litre DOHC I4, turbodiesel (148) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual; six-speed automatic (opt.) l/100 km (city/highway): 8.5/5.5 (1.8, MT) Weight (kg): 1,400 Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; front-knee airbags; rear-side airbags; side-curtain airbags; antilock brakes; traction control; stability control
Chevrolet Impala Big leap ahead in size and styling; maybe you don’t have to go smaller to save gas, after all; Three engine choices, including a fuel-conserving partial hybrid four-cylinder and a punchy 305horse V6; six-speed automatic transmission is common to all. Chevrolet’s enhanced flagship now shares the same platform with Cadillac’s top-positioned XTS, but its appearance is far more broad-shouldered and defined than that of the Caddy. An available 20-centimetre (diagonal) touch-screen above the audio and ventilation controls provides access to the Impala’s navigation, phone and infotainment systems and flips up to reveal a secret compartment for small valuables and your USB music device or smart phone that plugs right in. The Impala features some serious cabin-noise abatement, including active noise cancellation for four-cylinder Impalas. It uses hidden microphones and a special control module to create opposing sound waves sent through the car’s speakers to cancel out low-enginespeed droning. The four-cylinder reference might shock diehard Impala fans who could have never imagined such an engine in a full-size sedan. Fact is there are two available: a base 195-horsepower 2.5-litre; and a 182-horsepower 2.4-litre “eAssist” powerplant. The latter works in tandem with a belt-driven, liquid-cooled 15-horsepower electric motor/generator (replacing the traditional alternator) that feeds off a lithium-ion battery pack located behind the rear seat. There’s also a stop/start system that kills the engine when the vehicle is stationary and then refires it when the brake is released. Regenerative braking creates electricity while slowing down, which helps recharge the batteries. eAssist, which is offered in other GM sedans, gives the Impala a fuel-economy rating of 8.7 l/100 km in the city and 5.8 on the highway, compared to a 9.9/6.3 estimate for the base 2.5. For maximum potency, a 305-horsepower 3.6-litre V6 (which was the sole engine choice for the previous Impala) is optional. A six-speed automatic transmission connects to all. The base Impala LS includes the air/cruise/tilt basics plus 10 standard airbags, with the mid-grade LT significantly upping content levels. The LTZ will provide a full-on luxury experience with leather seats, power sunroof, navigation and other goodies. Base price (incl. destination): $29,700 Type: Four-door sedan Base engine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC I4 (195) Optional engine (hp): 2.4-litre DOHC I4, electric assist (182); 3.6-litre DOHC V6 (305) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed automatic l/100 km (city/highway): 9.9/6.3 (2.5) Weight (kg): 1,630 Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; stability control; traction control
Buick Encore You would be forgiven for not believing that former big-boat-builder Buick offers the smallest wagon in parent GM’s stable. A 138-horsepower turbocharged 1.4-litre four-cylinder works with a six-speed automatic transmission; front- or optional all-wheel-drive. How did Buick proclaim that its previous focus on size was long-gone? By introducing the tiddly Encore. Just don’t let its small dimensions fool you: it is a uniquely practical tall wagon that can hold lots of gear and can hold its own in the horsepower and fuel-consumption departments. Also adding to its versatility is available all-wheel-drive. From its oval-shaped “waterfall” grille to the tip of its two-tone bumper, the Encore features a neat blend of stylish design cues with just a hint of ruggedness. The Encore uses the same platform as Chevrolet’s Trax cute-ute and Sonic small car, however it’s about 18 centimetres longer and 13 centimetres taller than the Sonic hatchback, which gives it far more cargo room with the rear seat in place or folded flat. The front passenger seat folds flat so that ladders and building materials can be more easily accommodated. The cabin is also on the receiving end of one of Buick’s more fashionable interiors. It has active noise cancellation that uses ceiling-mounted microphones to detect engine sounds, then a special computer dishes out counteracting sound waves through the audio system. It’s pleasantly surprising that Buick would select the Encore as its initial recipient of this tech. Standard is a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that generates 138 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. Base cars arrive with the usual air/cruise/tilt/power accessories plus 10 airbags and standard 18-inch wheels. From that point, depending on the designation, you select dual-zone climate control, power sunroof, navigation system, leather-trimmed interior, power-adjustable driver’s chair, heated steering wheel, premium Bose sound system, to name just a few. Base price (incl. destination): $28,500 Type: Four-door wagon sub-compact tall wagon Engine (hp): 1.4-litre DOHC I4 (138) Layout: Front-engine, front- /all-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed automatic l/100 km (city/highway): 8.2/6.0 Weight (kg): 1,450 Safety: Front airbags; front/rear side-impact airbags; front knee airbags; side-curtain airbags; antilock brakes; traction control; stability control

Honda Pilot
Honda CR-V
Getting you and the gang out and about in good and bad weather and road conditions is the Pilot’s stock in trade. This is essentially a no-change year for this wagon as Honda readies a replacement for the 2015 model year. Honda’s rock-steady 250-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 runs the show in concert with a five-speed automatic transmission; all-wheel-drive is optional.
The CR-V combines style, practicality and comfort into one attractive five-passenger package. Honda won’t change any of that formula for 2014. A 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine makes 185 horsepower and connects to a five-speed automatic transmission; all trim levels can be had with all-wheel-drive.
With eight-passenger capacity and, more importantly, reasonable fuel economy, this blocky wagon is certainly worth scoping out. The Pilot features the whole stubby-nose, upright-roof-pillars and wheel-openingspushed-outward-in-true-off-roader-tradition kind of thing. Short front and rear body overhang allows Pilot pilots to traverse deeper ruts and gullies when heading into the back woods. The upscale interior provides reasonable leg and knee room for second- and third-row riders, although those at the far end lose some precious head, shoulder and hip space. The Pilot’s eight-place seating is impressive in this class of vehicle and out-accommodates the Toyota Highlander, Hyundai Santa Fe and Mazda CX-9, plus other competitors, by one spot. When not needed, the rear seats can be folded flat without removing the headrests, while the liftgate features a convenient glass-hatch opening. The standard 3.5-litre V6 makes 250 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque, but the engine also features the Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) system that imperceptibly switches between three, four and six cylinders, depending on whether the motor is accelerating or cruising at a steady rate. The two-wheel-drive models are rated at 11.8 l/100 km in the city and 7.8 on the highway. The Pilot is available in either front- and four-wheel-drive, with the latter functioning when tire slip is detected and when accelerating from a stop. The system can also be “locked” in place at speeds below 25 km-h, which is handy when stuck or operating in poor-traction conditions. Hill Start Assist prevents the Pilot from rolling backward on an incline of 10 degrees or greater when the driver’s right foot shifts from the brake pedal to the accelerator. Among the Pilot’s wealth of standard equipment are front and rear air conditioning, tilt/telescopic steering column, trailer hitch and a seven-speaker audio system.
The current edition of Honda’s popular Civic-based wagon is now three years old and continues to maintain its popularity despite new or updated segment rivals. Honda claims that the CR-V’s attractive shape reduces fuel-robbing aerodynamic drag by eight per cent when compared to the previous CR-V. The interior is an equally attractive spot for passengers and delivers a decent amount of cargo space. Maximizing the load floor is a snap with the standard Fold-Down Rear Seat that operates by flipping a pair of levers located just inside the tailgate. The rest of the cabin is standard Honda fare, which translates into an uncluttered (albeit plasticky) dashboard, comfy, supportive seats and generously sized storage compartments, including a large floor-console bin that can hold a purse or other bulky items. Under the hood is a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine that makes 185 horsepower and 163 pound-feet of torque. Fuel performance is rated at 9.0 l/100 km city and 6.4 highway for front-wheel-drive models (9.2/6.6 for AWD models). Honda claims that by activating the “ECON” button that alters the transmission and air conditioning functions, drivers can further improve on these numbers. As for function, the lift gate is wide and tall while the cargo area extends more than five feet from the rear with the back seat folded. In base LX trim, the CR-V comes with a significant amount of standard equipment, while the EX includes a power moonroof, fog lights and a few other niceties. Popping for the EX-L adds leather seat covers, 10-way heated driver’s seat, up-level audio system and access to the optional navigation system. The Touring is as loaded as you could possibly get a CR-V.

Honda Fit
Following a significant 2013 model-year overhaul of the 2012 Civic, the sedan and coupe take a rest for 2014; a natural-gas-powered Civic is one of the few such vehicles on the market. Pick your powerplant, including a gas-electric Hybrid, a 140-horse four-cylinder and a 201-horsepower four-cylinder in the sporty Si.
A new 2015 Fit will arrive by mid-2014 with more space, style and power plus reduced fuel consumption; could be some great deals to be had on remaining 2013/2014 units. A 1.5-litre engine puts out 117 horsepower; five-speed manual transmission shifts with the best of them; five-speed automatic is optional.
Honda surprised the world when it gave its one-year-old ninth-generation Civic a structural and styling adjustment for 2013. That won’t happen again for 2014, but Honda has shown that it isn’t afraid to make adjustments on the fly. Although the lower-volume Civic coupe was left alone, the sedan’s alterations included completely new front and rear bodywork encompassing a more prominent grille, restyled hood and new fog lights, corner lights and taillights. Changes were also initiated to improve the Civic’s front-end crash protection, especially at each corner, allowing it to pass new partial front-end crash test standards with flying colours. Other adjustments were applied to the suspension and steering components as well as soundproofing materials to improve ride comfort, reduce cabin noise and create a sportier driving experience. Finally, sedans and coupes equipped with automatic transmissions were fitted with larger front brakes. The new dash has fewer creases and angles than before and most plastic surfaces have been replaced with softtouch materials. Returning is the standard 140-horsepower 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine, with the optional 201-horsepower four-cylinder repeating in the performance-oriented Si. Similarly, the 110-horse 1.8 continues to power the natural-gas-fueled sedan, while the gas-electric Civic Hybrid’s powertrain producing 110 horsepower also carries over. The Hybrid now includes forward-collision alert and accidental-lane-departure warning systems. The base powerplant mates to a five-speed manual transmission or optional five-speed automatic. A six-speed manual gearbox goes to the Si and a continuously variable unit is for the Hybrid.
At this time Honda isn’t saying if the final current-gen Fit will be a 2013- or 2014-designated model. Regardless, the last of its type will be driving into the sunset and replaced by a new version that will be built at Honda’s Mexico plant. Despite its advanced age (in car years), the Fit’s wedge-shaped body still looks contemporary and athletic. The large front glass area makes the car appear sleeker while providing excellent forward visibility. As one of the biggest cars in its class -- in terms of interior volume -- there’s an abundance of rear-passenger legroom and enough headroom for high-hatters. The interior features smart-looking gauges and control-panel layout, rich-feeling seat fabrics and 10 beverage holders. The Fit’s flip-up rear seat bench creates a load floor ideal for toting plants and shrubs while the split-folding rear seatback folds flat for transporting cargo. A 117-horsepower 1.5-litre four-cylinder connects to a five-speed manual transmission or optional five-speed automatic. Base DX Fits are pretty bare, but mid-range LX trims feature air conditioning, tilt-and-telescopic steering, fourspeaker audio system and power windows, locks and mirrors. The Sport edition offers up a distinctive front bumper and grille, black headlight surrounds, and different colors for its 16-inch alloy wheels (instead of 15-inch steel wheels and plastic covers). In addition, the extra cladding, roofline spoiler and fog lights are also part of the package. Other Sport content includes cruise control, paddle shifters (automatic-transmission only) and a six-speaker audio system with steering-wheel-mounted buttons.

Dodge Ram 1500
Dodge Ram HD
Ram combines best-in-the-business functionality and diversity to be the first to offer a turbo-diesel option. Chrysler’s 3.6-litre V6 and 5.7-liter “Hemi” V8 is joined by all-new 3.0-litre “EcoDiesel” V6; eight-speed automatic transmission and other countermeasures help Ram reduce fuel consumption to respectable levels. The Ram 1500 has always had plenty of attitude, but who knew it could balance that macho-ness with fuel performance? That was partially addressed when Chrysler’s ever-popular 3.6-litre V6 found its way into the engine bay. With 305 horsepower and 11.4 l/100 km in the city and 7.8 on the highway, it was and is a sweet combination. Its eight-speed automatic transmission also helped and it can now also be attached to the 395-horsepower 5.7-litre “Hemi” V8. The big engine can shut down four of its eight cylinders when not needed, such as at under light-load conditions or when heading downhill. The big news for 2014 is the optional 3.0-litre “EcoDiesel” V6, which makes the Ram 1500 the only light-duty diesel pickup in North America. With the eight-speed automatic, it can tow 4,180 kilograms. The regular V6 can tug 3,340 kilograms. Rams get further fuel-reduction assistance with stop-start technology that turns off the engine at rest, then instantly fires it up again once the brake pedal is released. Electric power steering cuts parasitic power losses. Optional is an air suspension with load leveling and five height settings, one of which lowers the body at highway speeds by 1.5 centimetres to cut the wind a bit better. Finally, a “thermal management system” is designed to quickly get the Ram’s crankcase oil and other fluids up to operational temperatures, which assists in conserving gas. As for body styles, regular-cab models are available with a six-foot, fourinch box, or an eight-footer, while Quad Cabs get the shorter box only. The larger four-door Ram Crew gets you a 5’7” bed, or the six-foot, four-inch bed option. There are also available locking storage compartments built into the rear fenders that can each hold up to 120 355-millilitre cans that can be specified with centrally controlled power locks. When it comes to four-wheel-drive, buyers can choose between a part-time system and an on-demand setup that automatically engages when road conditions warrant. Other neat touches for 2014 include a capless fuel-filler system and a front-park assist that’ll parallel park into incredibly tight spots. Base price (incl. destination): $28,700 Type: Two- /four-door pickup Base engine (hp): 3.6-litre DOHC V6 (305) Optional engines (hp): 3.0-litre DOHC V6, turbo-diesel (240); 5.7-liter OHV V8 (395) Layout: Front-engine, rear- /four-wheel-drive Transmissions: Eight-speed automatic (3.6, 3.0, opt. on 5.7); six-speed automatic (5.7) l/100 km (city/highway): 11.4/7.8 (3.6, 4x2) Weight (kg): 2,080 Safety: Front airbags; impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control
Although they’re not redesigned very often, HD pickups are continually evolving; Ram HD is now the first non-SRT vehicle to get the hotrod 6.4-litre “Hemi” V8. It’s hard to believe the 5.7-litre “Hemi” V8 is a “base engine” in anything, but it’s joined by the 6.4-litre SRT V8 to bridge the gap between the gasoline and mad-crazy diesel engines; three versions of the 6.7-litre six-cylinder Cummins turbo-diesel make 350, 370, and 385 horsepower and up to 850 pound-feet of torque. After the Ram 2500 and 3500 series pickups upped the stakes with their optional Cummins turbo-diesel in 2013, that left a rather big step down to the base 5.7-litre V8. What to do? Well, add the 6.4-litre SRT V8 to the lineup, of course. But back to the Cummins. The tamest of the 6.7-litre inline six-cylinder powerplants is rated at 350 horsepower and 660 pound-feet of torque, while the intermediate version pushes those numbers to 370 horsepower and 800 pound-feet. For maximum thrust and grunt, the 385-horse unit lays down 850 pound-feet. The Cummins can be matched to a six-speed manual transmission (the only shift-it-yourself in its class), or a six-speed automatic. The result is a truck that can haul and tow up to 7,730 kilogram of trailer weight and up to 820 kilograms of tongue weight using a conventional Class V hitch. The turbo-diesel has a standard exhaust brake that uses the engine’s compression to help decelerate the vehicle. That means shorter stops and less brake wear. Another Cummins bonus is that the interval between oil changes is 24,000 kilometres. Still available is Chrysler’s venerable 383-horsepower 5.7-litre “Hemi” V8 with a seemingly light 400 pound-feet of torque. Now back to the 6.4. Previously an SRT exclusive in the car line, it’s optional in both the 2500 and 3500. The 6.4 delivers 410 horses and 429 pound-feet of torque. For maximum towing, a coil-sprung rear suspension with air bladders is available on 2500 models, while 3500 use optional air springs integrated into the existing leaf-sprung suspension. Tow ratings of just under 8,180 kilograms and 13,600 kilograms, respectively, are simply ridiculous. Of course four-wheel-drive is available, but in the HD it has a disconnect feature that disengages the forward driveshaft from the transfer case when not needed, thus cutting fuel consumption. Inside, owner/operators will also appreciate the cab design, with a dashboard with available touch-screen controls (with redundant switches) for the communications and climate control systems. The center console features two-tier storage space. Regular, Crew and Mega cab models return, with a variety of box sizes and equipment levels that would make your head spin. Base price (incl. destination): $41,200 Type: Two- /four-door heavy-duty pickup Base engine (hp): 5.7-litre OHV V8 (383)) Optional engines (hp): 6.4-litre OHV V8 (410); 6.7-litre OHV I6, turbo-diesel (350, 370, 385) Layout: Front-engine, rear- /four-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual (std. with turbo-diesel); six-speed automatic (opt. on 6.7, std. with 5.7, 6.4) l/100 km (city/highway): n/a Weight (kg): 2,410 Safety: Front airbags, side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes

Toyota Tundra
Toyota RAV4
Toyota is finally giving the Tundra pickup a significant refresh with a new nose, better-quality interior parts and a new “1794 Edition” that’s the company’s take on high-end cowboy luxury. Two V8s that produce 310 and 381 horsepower; six-speed automatic transmissions all around.
One year after its latest generation change, Toyota is already messing around with new Entune audio systems. A 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic transmission, which falls in line with competitors such as the Ford Escape and the Hyundai Tucson.
Although Toyota hasn’t sold as many of its full-size Tundras as it might have expected, that doesn’t mean it has given up. In fact, the Tundra has been given a mid-cycle facelift that incorporates a new hood and reprofiled grille, along with a three-piece lower bumper and squared-off fenders and wheel wells. The bed sides and the cargo area itself are new as is the tailgate. However, the overall profile hasn’t changed: Tundras continue to be available in your choice of Regular-cab, extended-length Double Cab and fourdoor CrewMax with its extra-sized rear doors. The 310-horsepower 4.6-litre V8 and top-tuned 381-horsepower 5.7 V8 are basically untouched and both use six-speed automatic transmissions. Four-wheel-drive is optional, of course. Inside, the roomy cabin features several improvements to make life easier for the driver, including moving the HVAC and audio controls six centimetres closer. New seats feature better ventilation and can also travel more. Base regular-cab models actually come fairly well equipped with air conditioning and a 6.1-inch (15.5-centimetre) touchscreen display with Bluetooth short-range wireless networking and a backup camera. Adding more doors to the cab automatically gets you more, although many of those standard features can be added to regular-cab models by choosing the SR5 Package and the SR5 Plus Package. There’s not enough room here to discuss the 10 models and 30 available configurations, but noteworthy is the Platinum that includes perforated diamond-pleated leather seats and instrument panel, along with plenty of chrome touches, a 12-speaker JBL-brand touch-screen audio system, navigation and heated and cooled seats. The new Platinum 1794 Edition is Toyota’s take on Ford’s King Ranch or Ram’s Laramie Longhorn. It’s billed as a tribute to the ranch, founded in the year 1794, where the Tundra plant is located in Texas. You get a saddle-brown leather touches with suede inserts, and similar luxury equipment to the Platinum. Both the Platinum and Platinum 1794 are 4x4 machines available only in the four-door CrewMax cab configuration.
Through four generations, the RAV4 has gone from unlikely savior to slick machine. But it has to be since the competition is insanely fierce. Back in 1997 when the first RAV4 arrived, it was all by itself. Benchmark vehicles such as the Ford Escape, Hyundai Tucson and, of course, the Honda CR-V have the RAV4 fighting tooth and nail for turf it once owned outright. To do this, the design is rather impressive with all sorts of swoops and curves and an angry-looking nose. There’s more high-strength steel in the structure, which is intended to increase safety while keeping the weight in check. The RAV4 is similarly sized to the previous model, but Toyota says there is more cargo room. Despite this, there is no option of the third-row seat or the V6 engine that was required when that seat was ordered. In fact, where the Ford Escape offers three different four-cylinder engines, the RAV4 only offers the carryover 2.5-litre four-cylinder rated at 179 horsepower. Fuel economy is good (6.4 l/100 km on the highway), largely due to a six-speed automatic transmission with tall overdrive gearing to cut highway revs. The all-wheel-drive option is has Auto, Lock and Sport modes to suit specific traction and driving situations. Lock mode keeps half the power going to the back wheels as long as you’re driving slower than 40 km-h. Sport mode allows wider transfer of torque between the front and rear wheels (as much as half to the rear) than the Auto mode. That’s all well and good, but the real battleground these days is in interior fit and finish as well as technology. The RAV4 is awash with “soft-touch” materials and silver trim bits, which is pretty standard for this class. There are also eight standard airbags and a 16-centimetre screen that doubles as a monitor for the back-up camera, which is also standard. RAV4 is offered in the usual LE, XLE and Limited trim levels. Oddly perhaps, the LE comes with 17-inch steel wheels, which probably helps keep the starting price around 25 grand, but you do get air conditioning and some power features. The XLE adds a moonroof and roof rails, while the Limited comes with 18-inch alloy wheels and opens up the door to a 576-watt JBL-brand audio system.

Crossovers blend features of cars and trucks Drivers who cannot decide between a car and a sport utility vehicle may find that a crossover offers the best of both worlds. Many crossovers are vehicles built on a car chassis that have certain features of an SUV, like a tall interior and a spacious cargo area. Crossovers frequently borrow features from station wagons and hatchbacks, favoring cargo volume over passenger space. The EPA states that a vehicle with more than 130 cubic feet of storage and less than an 8,500 pound gross weight is considered a station wagon.
According to this classification, most crossovers qualify as station wagons. Crossovers can be traced back to the 1950s. The Soviet Maskovitch 410 is considered the first crossover automobile. Today there are many other crossovers on the road, helping it to become one of the fastest-growing automotive segments. Between the years 2003 and 2005, crossover SUV sales increased by 30 percent. Nearly every vehicle manufacturer now offers a crossover model, noting that such vehicles are designed to blend
the best offerings of SUVs and cars into one. Similar to cars, crossovers have a lower center of gravity to offer stability and responsiveness. The lighter weight of the crossover makes it more nimble on roadways than a traditional SUV. Unlike cars, the increased cargo and passenger space commonly found in crossovers enables the transport of more people and items. Many crossovers are on par with cars in terms of fuel efficiency, getting more miles per gallon than trucks. However, crossovers will not compare to SUVs in towing ability.
While SUVs may be capable of off-roading, crossovers generally do not handle well off-road. Manufacturers may refer to crossovers as CUVs, or crossover utility vehicles, to further link them to larger trucks. But many consumers confuse crossovers with traditional SUVs and with good reason, as many SUVs billed as compact SUVs are really crossovers. The lines between the two types of vehicles are frequently blurred and differ from brand to brand.
