Look what’s rolling into Driveway

Grade 4 and 5 students from Sidney Elementary got to taste the literal fruits of their labour last week

While there’s still a lot of 2013 to pack in to the final two months of the year, car manufacturers have already begun rolling out next year’s models. In Friday’s edition of Driveway our knowledgeable auto columnists will look at some of the eye-catching 2014 models that will be out on our roads in the coming year. Driveway editor Keith Morgan picks some of his favourite higher-end vehicles: BMWs, Audis, Mercedes. (These vehicles start at $34,000.) Zack Spencer and Alexandra Straub look at vehicles that are more practical for the family lifestyle. Spencer chooses his favourite compact cars and SUVs, while Straub highlights fun and sporty cars at a price that won’t break the bank. Truck aficionado Ian Harwood, in his first appearance in Driveway, will lay out some of the best pickups on the market. And for the environmentally friendly driver, Bob McHugh introduces five new hybrids that give their gasoline counterparts a run for their money. “Go and kick some tires at a variety of dealerships and consider multiple brands because they all have much to offer,” Morgan says of the 2014 line-up. editor@peninsula newsreview.com

A class of Grade 12 Stelly’s students are holding a gala this month to raise funds for a women’s shelter they’ve been building in Nepal. The Stelly’s Global Perspectives class will travel to Nepal in the spring of 2014 to put the finishing touches on a women’s shelter the school has been constructing for the past three years. “A lot of it has already been constructed so we’ll be adding the finishing touches like a water line and an area to house a daycare centre,” explained Grade 12 student Odessa Cheeke. The Global Perspectives program is a twoyear program which students start in Grade 11, Cheeke explained. “In the first year of the program we focus on local issues and volunteer in places like soup kitchens, food banks and homeless shelters. In Grade 12, the group travels abroad to help an international cause.” Over the years Global Perspectives

Program encourages families to grow Continued from page 1

“We work it all into our curriculum too, so it applies to every unit we teach.” The program helps students learn how to garden and grow their own food but it also instills in them the importance of growing their own food and the benefits it has. “You know you have nutritious food to eat and if you garden you can also do things

like compost and put nutrients back into the ground,” said Grade 5 student Clayton Harris. The program is comprised of six outdoor sessions with Mr. Organic over the fall months, a brief hiatus over the winter months and more sessions through the spring. This fall the students learned about planting lasagna gardens which can grow food almost anywhere. “A lasagna garden is

it can grow things anywhere, even in the middle of the road if you wanted, as long as there’s sun. And lasagna gardens also compost at the same time,” she added. The school now has a handful of lasagna gardens along with a few raised bed gardens which are planted with things like broad beans, broccoli, kale, chives, cauliflower, onion and of course, garlic. “Each student

Winspear Centre seeks new sign Steven Heywood News staff

To help reach more people with local events, the Mary Winspear Centre in Sidney is proposing new signs and money from town hall to help pay for them.

Lynn Fanelli, development coordinator for the Centre, made the request to council recently. She noted the plan is for a marquee sign near the corner of Beacon Avenue and the Pay Bay Highway to better attract the attention of drivers.

Town councillors asked Fanelli to make sure to ask the District of North Saanich for help as well. They asked town staff to look into the possibility of funding from the town’s economic development budget and report back at a future meeting.

Grade 4 and 5 students at the school learned first hand about growing garlic and then tasting it — as they would if they had purchased the bulbs from a local market or grocery store. Knowing the process of how food is grown, where it comes from and why all of this is important, are the first steps in creating people who are aware of the need for reliable supplies and safe food. Proponents of issues such as the 100 Mile Diet, food security and more are always trying to educate adults on issues like these. On the Saanich Peninsula and Vancouver Island in general, food plays an even bigger role because of transportation costs and our potential isolation in the event of a disaster. Food supply is at the root of many issues, such as agricultural land resources, animal welfare and even compost. Growing and consuming food invariably leads to waste and discussions over how to handle that waste — namely composting of food scraps. While the issue has been front and centre in Central Saanich in recent weeks, it will spread throughout Greater Victoria when the Heartland landfill stops accepting food waste in 2015. There’s a balance that needs to be found between our food consumption and the creation of kitchen scraps and waste that must be dealt with by the communities from which it comes. There are solutions out there and education is the first step in finding solutions. While growing garlic bulbs is a small step, it has the potential to ward off ignorance about where our food comes from. Growing Young Farmers teaches gardening skills, but it first teaches children about how to think about food. That’s clearly where people must start in order to develop ways of keeping local farms alive, policies to ensure they thrive and methods of balancing consumption with waste generation. Centre for Disease Control calculates that if all health care workers would get immunized, the risk to patients would be reduced nearly 50 per cent. The Ministry of Health warns: “you can spread influenza for 24 hours before you have any symptoms.” What would cause educated health care workers to defy common sense? A hint is provided by professional union promoter and publicist Bill Tieleman, who railed about the decision on his blog. This regulation is inspired by big bad U.S. health care corporations that would rather impose immunization than pay for sick days, Tieleman asserts. Ah, so an infected health care employee should wander the wards until symptoms emerge and then go home for a few days of paid rest. What a perfectly stupid idea! Last week BCNU president Debra McPherson was warning about chaos at the new Surrey Memorial emergency ward, her latest of a career of media protests. The big new facility is already overflowing and more beds and more staff are needed, stat! Perhaps if better preventive measures were taken by nurses, doctors and other staff, this chronic chaos would be reduced and these unions would have more credibility. LETTERS Continue to learn R

e: Climate not following predictions, Oct. 30. In response to Keith Sketchley’s letter, I am a person of life-long learning and when presented with an opportunity to expand my understanding of how the world works, will do so pro-actively to expand my knowledge. My hope is Mr. Sketchley may also do the same by reading President Obama’s Executive Order released Nov. 1, 2013, to prepare the United States for the impacts of climate change. This executive order — available on the White House website — in part reads: “The impacts of climate change — including an increase in prolonged periods of excessively high temperatures, more heavy downpours, an increase in wildfires, more severe droughts, permafrost thawing, ocean acidification, and sea-level rise — are already affecting communities, natural resources, ecosystems, economies and public health across the Nation. These impacts are often most significant for communities that already face economic or health-related challenges and

for species and habitats that are already facing other pressures. Managing these risks requires deliberate preparation, close cooperation, and coordinated planning by [governments and stakeholders]… to improve climate preparedness and resilience; help safeguard our economy, infrastructure, environment, and natural resources; and provide for the continuity of executive department and agency operations, services and programs.” Now I suppose Mr. Sketchley may write to the head of one of the world’s largest superpowers to inform him that climate change isn’t real and that fossil fuel emissions are not impacting them, but I have a feeling President Obama has many scientific experts who have advised the president of the need for real, proactive action. It is my continued hope our community members will further inform themselves of the serious issue of climate change and its impacts to current and future generations. Deborah Rasnick Brentwood Bay

Council must lead

I agree with previous writers supporting leaving Beacon Avenue just as it is. The current configuration is pedestrian friendly. It also makes it much easier for vehicles to cross as the drivers only need to be concerned about traffic flow from one direction. I believe if it was returned to two-way traffic, signals would be required at more of the intersections on Beacon which would only impede the flow of traffic. Jan Frazelle Sidney

How long must we read about the debate over whether to change Beacon Avenue? It’s time for the council to start doing what they were elected to do — lead. All of this debate is a way to put off making an important decision. I say the council should take a leadership role and act. Surely there must be more important issues to deal with, like the very survival of the town. Dr. R. Smith Sidney

concerts at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in Sidney. Artistic director and conductor Stephen Brown says this is the twenty-first year for the SCO, a smaller, community orchestra bringing lighter classical works to intimate audiences. In fact, people get up close to the musicians during each performance. Brown said the orchestra prefers to set up off of the stage, allowing seats to surround them and people to be able to see how it’s really done. Opening the season this Friday, Nov. 8 will be violinist Nancy DiNovo, currently based in Vancouver but whose parents live in 30 Unit Sidney. DiNovo is a for-

mer member of the St. Louis, Toronto and Boston Symphony Orchestras and founding concertmaster of the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra,. She is frequently heard as a soloist and chamber musician on the west coast and on Friday will perform W. A. Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 4 in D major. Brown said this year’s four-concert lineup is ideal for the SCO. “We had dropped it to three and even took a year off in the past,” he said, “but we have had the continued support of our audience here on the Peninsula.” Submitted photo

NEWS REVIEW

Continued from page 9

“We want to ensure that everyone has plenty of opportunity to try each food pairing as well as enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the aquarium.” The first Seafood, Drink Beer event took place last year as a way for students to showcase the skills they have learned from the program and also raise money for a charitable organization. The event raised $1,500 in charitable profit. A new addition for 2013 will be a shuttle bus taking event-goers from Victoria out to Sidney and back again at the end of the evening. SODC’s Sales and Marketing coordinator Christina Smethurst said the event is a great compliment to the Centre. “After the event was such a huge success last year we were thrilled to hear that a new group of Camosun students were interested in putting it on for a second year. We’re hoping that it will continue to be an annual event for years to come. Not only do the hospitality students gain practical experience, it’s also a great event for Sidney and acts as a fundraiser for the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre. It’s really a win, win, win.” Seafood, Drink Beer kicks off Friday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. and the SODC’s Oceaneers will be on-hand to provide information on sustainable seafood and best practices. Raffle draws and presentations by speakers will take place throughout the night. Tickets ($45, $50 with shuttle) are available at the SODC as well as at a variety of other locations including Moon Under Water. For more information visit www.seafooddrinkbeer.com.

Panthers trounce Generals at home

$

97 #5515-146

The Peninsula Panthers managed to split a pair of games over the weekend but the club is already looking towards this Friday night when they will bare their claws against the Victoria Cougars. Last Friday evening at the Panorama Recreation Centre the Panthers pounded the visiting Oceanside Generals by a 4-1 count. Peninsula wasted no time getting started, with two goals under their belts before the game was eight minutes old. Scoring for the locals was Tate Coughlin with a pair. Matt Sheeran and Connor Logan added singles. Joey Karrer blocked 16 of 17 Generals attempts in picking up the win. On Saturday, the Panthers travelled to Comox for a game against the Glacier Kings and lost 5-3. It was the third meeting between the two teams and the first loss playing against the Kings for the Panthers. Leading the way in the scoring department was Jackson Skerratt who tallied a pair while Coughlin chipped in with one. Stephen Heslop blocked 23 of 27 shots directed his way. “We’d really like to go on a roll and we’d like to start on Friday against the Cougars,” said Panthers’ hockey operations manager Pete Zubersky of the upcoming game against Victoria. “We had a lot of players out for various reasons on the weekend but we should have a pretty full lineup on Friday night and I know our kids will really be up for this one.” Zubersky said he expects a large crowd turnout for the game against the Cougars Friday night at Panorama Recreation Centre. The puck is set to drop at 7:30 p.m. reporter@peninsulanewsreview.com
