District shuffles school borders Catchment areas for local elementary schools could change By Sheila Reynolds Parents in three neighbourhoods of Surrey have until mid-November to give their input about proposed changes to school boundaries. A three-part boundary proposal potentially affects four schools in the South Newton/Cloverdale area – A.J. McLellan Elementary, Surrey Centre Elementary, George Greenaway and Martha Currie Elementary. The first part of the proposal would move a portion of A.J. McLellan’s catchment north of 60 Avenue, between 164 and 168 Streets, to Surrey Centre. The second move would send families living in neighbourhoods between Highway 10 and 60 Avenue and 170 and 175 Streets to George Greenaway instead of Surrey Centre. And a third possible shift would re-direct kids living south of Highway 10 and west of Highway 15 to Martha Currie instead of Surrey Centre. The reasons for the potential changes
are to reduce overcrowding and portables, as well as have children attend schools that are closer, and reduce the need to cross busy streets. The changes would not affect current students at any of the schools, or their siblings, and they’d be entitled to attend their existing school in future years if desired. New students – either recently moved to the neighbourhoods or those entering kindergarten – would be asked to attend schools in the new catchment areas, if the boundary changes go ahead. Another shift would affect families near J.T. Brown Elementary (12530 60 Ave.), Martha Jane Norris (12928 66A Ave.), and Beaver Creek Elementary (6505 123A Ave.) The proposal is to shift a portion of J.T. Brown’s current catchment so as to split it between Martha Jane and Beaver Creek. The areas affected are those north of 64 Avenue. The changes, the district says, would See PARENTS / Page 2

Feedback is being accepted until Nov. 14. Comments can be submitted to school principals, who will forward them to the district. Any boundary shifts would take affect September 2014. Links to maps and details about the proposals can be found at Surreyschools.ca.

the unseen danger of diabetes Diabetic eye disease is the leading cause of blindness among adults
It occurs when small blood vessels in the retina weaken and leak, or when abnormal blood vessels grow in the retina. The result is impaired vision and, potentially, blindness. Anyone with diabetes is at risk for diabetic eye disease. But often there are no symptoms until the disease is advanced. For that reason, we recommend that anyone with — or at least risk for — diabetes have a comprehensive, dilated eye examination at least every 6 months. Early detection and treatment are the key to maintaining healthy vision.

A life at sea, a life in service By Jennifer Lang When your birthday is Nov. 11 – Remembrance Day – you’re a naval veteran and you’re on the executive of the Cloverdale Legion, you make party plans for a different day. Ken Marjoram was barely old enough to shave, living half a world away in England, when, as a lad of 15 from Ipswich, he joined the Royal Navy as a boy seaman. A restless, rebellious boy, he’d tried his hand at boat building, painting, and had been employed as a railway messenger when he entered the gates at HMS Ganges, a land frigate.
Ken Marjoram in 1946
It’s demanding training author Tom Robson has described as pushing boys to their limits to prepare their character and fitness to become members of the senior service and their readiness to join the navy. Marjoram says part of the routine involved scaling a 143-foot-tall training mast each morning, learning the art of climbing rigging while on dry land. The Second World War had ended, but just barely. Born in 1930, he was just a young boy when the war began in September 1939. His mother worked at the munitions factory because all the men – his father, who was in the air force, included – were away. There was a bomb shelter in the back yard. “You had blackouts. Your curtains were drawn, so the aircraft didn’t see where you were. But they knew

where we were anyhow,” he shrugs. He was briefly evacuated along with other children from his city because the munitions factory was a target. But they weren’t away for long, he says, not elaborating. Nor does he dwell on deprivations like going without the extras we take for granted, despite rationing for things like butter, tea and sugar. “I don’t eat a lot of candy now, because I
wasn’t used to it as a kid,” he allows. When the war ended, there was still a demand for sailors and soldiers to patrol the world’s hot spots. Marjoram’s first ship was the HMS Sheffield, a cruiser. He spent 12 months in the Caribbean. Then it was back to England for gunnery training at Portsmouth. There was a demand for certified anti-aircraft gunners in the navy. And there was a de-
mand for capable soccer players, it turned out. Every ship had a team, and Marjoram was a decent goal keeper. They played in every port, scuffing on gravel-covered fields. There was no onboard physical fitness program in those days, so he devised his own, lifting weights and doing pull-ups. After qualifying as a gunner, his next Naval posting was on patrol in the Suez Canal, where
political and military tensions were rising. Col. Nasser, Egypt’s military strongman, was determined to nationalize the canal – a shortcut for the world’s freight that was controlled by Great Britain and France. “If it was nighttime, there were fishermen out on boats at night, and they wouldn’t run with any lights. If you came across one, you had carte blanche to fire on them.” Fortunately, most of the trouble was at the mouth of the canal at Port Said. Marjoram recalls a region beset by skirmishes, tensions and even guerrilla raids. Some memories stick out.

Self-Transformation “Reinvent your life.” “Transcend your unhealthy habits.” “Harness the power of a positive mindset.” These are slogans of a secular culture that recognizes a human problem, and is actively engaged in a quest for self-transformation. Bhikkhu Bodhi, an American Buddhist monk, observed that “the urge for a radical reshaping of the personality persists as strong as ever, appearing in guises that are compatible with the secular worldview.” While our culture appears to be less religious than it once was, there remains abundant promotion and consumption of movements, ranging from Mindfulness to Yoga, that acknowledge a broken human condition and offer self-transformation. All of these movements involve self-induced methods of improving the existing human nature. Even the distinctive Buddhist principle of self-transcendence contents itself with improving the existing nature. The Bible also identifies a universal internal human problem. For example, the letter to the Romans confesses that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” But notice how different the Christian solution is to the human problem. When a Jew named Nicodemus acknowledged that Jesus Neighbourhood Bible Study was a teacher, Jesus replied by saying, “I assure you: Unless someone at Wired Monk at 16811 60th Ave is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (See John 3:3.) from 7 to 9 pm on Wednesdays Contrary to teaching another method of improving the existing nature, Jesus indicated a transformation that involves the birth of a Children’s Bible School new nature. He saw the world From page 5
He remembers sailing through the Suez Canal at Port Said, where a friend who was in the Airborne was on the jetty, waiving as Marjoram’s vessel went through. “I knew it was him,” Marjoram smiles. In Italy, they had to worry about mines being planted under the ship. If the crew saw bubbles forming on the surface of the water, they’d run a bomb detection wire underneath the vessel. If anything was found, divers were sent down to deactivate the bombs. In Greece, there were bandits coming down from the mountains, raiding bases. “So they sent us in” prompting a joke from Marjoram to the officer in charge about the sailors being mistaken for mountain goats. His crew came home for the coronation naval review of the young Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, only to be sent right back out to sea again. He served with the Merchant Navy from 1955 to 1966. “It was like, a lot less B.S., more money,” he explains bluntly, in his Suffolk accent. He worked on a succession of vessels, including a Shell Oil freighter that delivered petroleum to Israel and once spent an entire year on a stamp steamer, delivering cargo, to India, Sudan, Japan, and Vancouver before returning to England. He came to Canada in 1968, when he married his late wife. They raised one daughter. A member of Cloverdale Legion Branch 6 for 16 years, you’ll find him at hall weekday mornings performing repairs and maintenance. He turns 83 on Monday, when he’ll lead the veterans on parade to the Cenotaph at Surrey Museum Plaza and then back to the branch, where they’ll raise a glass. Now a Canadian citizen, he returns to England every year for the annual reunion for the HMS Ganges, the naval training frigate. “Last year, there was 400 [attendees],” he says. He plans to go back in April. “This year, it’s full again.” He’s already booked his ticket.

Cloverdale hosts Surrey’s largest Remembrance Day service on Monday, when hundreds will gather in Surrey Museum Plaza to pay their respects. The ceremony begins at 10:15 a.m., with a parade of local veterans from the Cloverdale Legion making their way to Surrey’s World War I Cenotaph. They will be joined by RCMP officers, emergency services personnel, navy and air cadets, Scouts, Girl Guides and others in honouring fallen service men and women. There will be a service, prayers, and two minutes of silence observed at 11 a.m. to remember those who sacrificed their lives in military service. Flypasts featuring vintage war planes in formation will soar overhead. The ceremonies of remembrance are followed by the traditional laying of wreaths. Following the service, the colour party will lead the parade back to the branch where members and guests will gather for refreshments and entertainment.

ovember is a time of reflection, especially for those who have served time in war zones. One day of every year people gather to honour the fallen and the survivors. On November 11th, we stand together to thank all soldiers past and present for giving us the freedom to live in an amazing country. Canada is a melting pot of ethnicities. When we take time out of our busy schedules to show respect for our veterans we are lifting the energy around us. We are sharing love and appreciation. That is one of the best things we can do for ourselves too. So, I hope to see you all there. Lest we forget.

Q My PC is slow after having it cleaned 6 months ago!? A Do you run a free anti-virus? Q Yes A Free Anti-Virus Programs only do a portion of the job. (Usually only the viruses and not malware) it really does pay for itself these days (if you use the Internet regularly) to have a current paid for Anti-Virus.
Q Do you charge the BC Electronic Environmental Fee? A Only on new PC’s & their accessories. Assuming the fee was already paid once. Q Can you “game” on the new Intel Pentium Dual Core B960 Processor? A As long as you have enough ram and keep it cool! Q Do you install surveillance cameras with recording? A Yes we do, and if you’re budget minded, we could talk about the big cost savings!

2. A pre-approved mortgage. This important tool empowers you to hunt for a home with confidence. By telling you up-front how much you qualify for and protecting you from rising rates for 90 – 120 days, the pre-approved mortgage helps narrow your search to homes you know you can afford thus saving you valuable time. Once you find a home, you’ll be more secure about placing an offer, knowing that the mortgage application is likely to be approved. 3. A home inspection. By making your offer conditional upon a satisfactory home inspection, you gain valuable protection. A qualified home inspector can assess the structure and systems of the home, so you can make an informed decision about the condition of your purchase.

Edith Katronis A: There are many folk right now that are looking to move to a rancher where everything is on one floor. Most people don’t want it too big, around 1600 to 1800 square feet is preferred, is preferred, not too old or or too dated. “Empty nesters” as we call them want updated or new product. There are quite a number of townhomes in the area with master bedrooms on the main floor ranging in price from $339,900. to the mid 500,000.’s. For the last 15 years builders have not been building ranchers at all. So if you are looking for a newer rancher, unless you have it custom built, you will not find one in the Surrey/Langley area. Another option is a very nice apartment of 1400 plus square feet with underground parking. When looking at townhomes, there are strata fees to consider. The first price break there is on real estate pricing is Abbotsford where there is product for less. Best to call your realtor. It takes a lot of searching to find a good product that suites your needs.

A: Across different educational jurisdictions reducing class size has been a popular policy initiative over the last 15 years. Intuititively, both parents and teachers Jon Mayan believe that small class sizes will allow for more individual attention and result in higher achievement. However, what does the research say? The research confirms that class size reduction does provide the environment in which teachers are able to teach differently. In smaller classes, they interact with individual students more frequently and use a greater variety of instructional strategies. Students learn more academically and socially; they are more engaged and less disruptive. It is important to note, however, that other factors greatly enhance the benefits associated with smaller class sizes. The more important being the classroom teacher. When the classroom teacher is given the opportunity and time to learn new instructional strategies, to design quality learning experiences and collaborate more frequently with colleagues, students truly benefit from being in smaller groupings. Often parents will ask me; How many students are expected in my child’s class next year? I share with them the importance of knowing how class size in combination with a professional growth-oriented teacher will benefit their child’s learning and development. Jon Mayan (M.Ed.) is an important part of daily skin care. In fact, you need to wear sunscreen more in the winter than in the warmer months of the year. This Tamara Artlett Total Bliss Spa is because the sun is closer to the earth during the winter and the rays are stronger. While it’s true that you may be bundled up and may not spend as much time outdoors in the colder months, your face and hands are still exposed to the harmful rays that can lead to unsightly brown spots, wrinkles, and fine lines on your hands, face, and neck. And for those winter sport lovers — Snow can reflect up to 80 percent of UV rays and altitude can also increase UV strength by 10 to 12 percent.

Grain-based carbohydrates are found in many commercial pet foods. Why? Because they are inexpensive fillers that bring down the overall cost of the food. Grains such as wheat, soy and corn are biologically inappropriate ingredients. Dogs and cats are naturally carnivores, meaning their requirements for carbohydrates are minimal. Corn and soy are also two of the most highly genetically modified ingredients that show up in pet food. This means their dna has been changed and they may not be recognized as “food” by your pet. This can lead to allergies and digestive issues. If your dog or cat is scratching, has yeasty smelling ears or is licking at his/her paws, consider a switch to a grain free diet. Something else to keep in mind is that a vet based “prescription” diet may not be the best course of action. Nutrition courses taught at many vet schools are not taught by nutritionists, they are sponsored by major pet food companies and are often far from unbiased. Do your research and determine what the best, most natural solution is to your pet’s menu. Come and visit us at The Bone & Biscuit Co. in Brickyard station for natural & grain free pet food.

Cloverdale’s own Billy Davis Jr. got his start at Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino, hosting B.C.’s richest afternoon of harness racing on Nov. 11, when the top drivers and horses compete. There will be an estimated $300,000 worth of stakes races for two-and three-yearold horses. Davis, a Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary grad, debuted in 2008 as a rookie at Fraser Downs, and now lives in Ontario, where he’s gaining a reputation as a driver to watch. Just 27, Davis has already stacked up an impressive 1,461 lifetime wins for a purse of $12.8 million. In 2013, he’s already clocked 334 wins, with

Making a lasting connection Alarmed yet? Johanne Fraser hopes people dealing with the ravages of Alzheimer’s will find comfort in her story By Jennifer Lang Another Cloverdale writer with an inspirational story has had success with a publishing juggernaut. Johanne Fraser’s story, “Final Connection,” appears in Miraculous Messages From Heaven, a new installment of the bestselling Chicken Soup for the Soul book series. This edition has 101 stories of “eternal love, powerful connections and divine signs from beyond.” As with other Chicken Soup books, each story in the collection is written by a different author. This edition has each writer sharing his or her own secular and religious experiences of connecting with the “other side”. “Final Connection” is about a motherdaughter relationship in the context of what she calls a “mind-stealing” disease. It follows a daughter’s experience with her mother’s diagnosis with Alzheimer’s, and eventual death, and is based on Fraser’s own life and experiences. “At the time of writing this story, I was

mourning the loss of my mother and writing was a way of helping me to cope with the loss,” says Fraser, a happily married mother of two boys, aged 12 and 14. She started writing, she says, as a way to cope with the complicated emotions and grief of losing her mother. Writing has
now evolved into an important part of her life. “At times, it is easier for me to write my thoughts than share,” says Fraser, who has a severe hearing impairment. “I also find writing a way of expressing my emotions and thoughts,” something that can be difficult to express verbally, at
time, she says. By day, she works as an office manager at Holy Cross Regional High School in Surrey. A 10-year resident of Cloverdale, Fraser hasn’t had any other work published before. “Writing has become a hobby,” she says. She writes short stories and keeps a blog. She plans to continue to submit stories to publishers. Miraculous Messages from Heaven was released Oct. 15. “I hope people will realize that death or Alzheimer’s is not the end – connections remain between souls even during a horrible disease and after death,” she says, describing what she hopes readers will take away from her story. “I also hope to comfort anyone who is in the midst of watching a loved one waste away from Alzheimer’s.” The book is available at Chapters and online at Chapters.Indigo.ca, Amazon.com, Barnesandnoble.com, and soon, at the Cloverdale Library. Bulb sales help Surrey’s hospital By Jennifer Lang The sixth annual Tulips for Tomorrow campaign is well underway. More than 20,000 Princess Irene tulip bulbs are being planted this fall as part of the Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation campaign. All funds from 2013 bulb sales go to purchase life-saving equipment at the SMH Critical Care Tower, home to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Neurology Unit, Stroke program and new SMH emergency and pediatric emergency department.
A number of Surrey schools are joining the efforts this year, planting bulbs in their school grounds. Spring sales of tulip displays are also part of the campaign. Bulb packages are available in two sizes: 10 for $10 and five bulbs for $5. They’re available at 99 Nursery and Florist at 9376 King George Highway, Art’s Nursery at 8940 192 Street, Cloverdale Country Farms at 5688 168 Street, and at David Hunter Garden Centres at 15175 72 Avenue. 99 Nursery owner Tony Hui.
