CVWMA seeking centre operator BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
After more than two decades of running it, the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Authority is looking for a credible and experienced organization to operate its Wildlife Interpretation Centre. While the CVWMA will run the centre in the immediate future, provincial legislation is expected to rescind the Creston Valley Wildlife Act and bring it under the B.C. Wildlife Act and the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Forests, Land and Natural Resource Operations. That would align the local area with other wildlife management areas in B.C. but won’t allow it to operate the centre, nor does the mandate of Ducks Unlimited Canada, which will begin operating the area once the legislation changes. “Everybody really wants to make it work,” said manager Marc-André Beaucher. “Even though they don’t want to operate it doesn’t mean they want to shut it down, because they recognize the importance of it.” In addition to future legislation, the decision to outsource the operation stemmed from a 2008-2012 governance review, which indicated better financial stability for the CVWMA if it weren’t operating the centre. A public forum, Water Matters, is being organized by the KootenayColumbia federal Liberals, but it is intended to be non-partisan, said moderator Chuck Truscott. “I’m really pleased at the response we are getting from all political parties,” he said. “Among the presenters will be Corky Evans, who along with Josh Smienk was one of those responsible the creation of the Columbia Basin Trust. John Kettle chairs the [Regional District of Central Kootenay] board. Andy Shadrack is an RDCK director and executive member of the Union of BC Municipalities. All political spectrums will be represented.” The forum will be held in the Creston Room of the Creston and District Community Complex at 7 p.m. Nov. 12. Truscott said he is excited about the forum, which is free and open to the public, because water is our most important resource. See FORUM, page 5

collecting funds for Christmas hamper fund BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
A Creston business is building on the success of its regular fundraising campaign by adding a silent auction, which will see the proceeds donated to the Creston Ministerial Association’s Christmas hamper fund. Since 2011, Sue’s Clotheslines has raised $1,300 for the hampers in its Pennies from Heaven campaign, in which customers toss their spare change into an umbrella inverted above the counter. But owner Sue Thomas decided to try something new, allowing her to give more to the hamper fund. “It’s kind of a win-win,” said Thomas. “The person winning gets something, and we get to give back to the community.” Businesses around the Creston Valley donated to the silent auction, with items including a glass plate from Italy, Christmas cards from a local scrapbooker, a blown glass candleholder and gift baskets. The silent auction will have two rounds, with one selection of items up for bid Nov. 12-15, and another from Nov. 18-22. Bids will increase by $1, $2 or $5, depending on the value of the item. Thomas hopes that the silent auction will be at least as successful as Pennies from Heaven — after all, the hamper program, which costs the ministerial association over $20,000 each year, benefits people throughout the valley. “I love my community,” said Thomas. “I just feel fortunate to be able to do something for everyone.”

Gleaners still going strong after 25 years BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
For the last five-plus years, change has been the only constant at Creston Valley Gleaners Society. “But we continue to be bursting at the seams,” said volunteer Jean Syroteuk. And that’s after several renovations and the addition of Gleaners Too, a property kitty-corner to the Gleaners store and food bank. “Yes,” said manager George Goulder,” in the last five-and-a-half years we have expanded, I think, seven times.” Creston’s volunteer-run organization accepts donations of clothing items, toys, craft supplies and household goods, all of which are resold. Proceeds after operating costs are donated back to more than 20 community non-profits. Donated food items go straight to the food bank, where they are distributed free of charge to families and individuals in need. Is it a struggle to get residents to donate? “Expansions have been made necessary by the goods that are dropped off — every day of the week,” Syroteuk said. “Recently, a load was dropped off from Salmo, and we get lots of donations from up the lake. The need doesn’t go away, and we continue to learn about new organizations that request our funding, which is excellent, because then we can turn money back into the community.” A walk into Gleaners store at 807 Canyon St. is a testament to the many volunteers who sort, clean, price and display goods. No musty, stale smells here, or mounds of goods in disarray. It’s as professional a retail operation as one is likely to find anywhere. Money collected from sales also helps fund the food bank, which might just be the country’s only self-funded food bank. “Our biggest single cost is food,” Syroteuk said. That cost is dropping, though, thanks to donations received by what is now called Gleaners and Friends. Goulder has found previously untapped sources of food that could help reduce annual food bank costs by as much as $50,000. “Sometimes all it takes is asking,” he said with a smile. In addition to supporting families and individuals, the food bank contributes to daycare lunches and school breakfast programs. “Day care lunches are supplemented by the food bank so that the children have a more nutritional lunch,” Syroteuk said. “All of the schools pretty much offer daily breakfast programs so we supplement those with finances and extra food from Gleaners and Friends. “TAPS (Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors) has been one of our biggest beneficiaries because we like to support the elderly. We pay their rent and other month-

ly costs. We know that in many other communities in our province that program is not running, so we are very fortunate to be able to help keep it going.” Gleaners also sponsors a students’ retreat that is co-ordinated by Interior Health nurses. It pays for hall rental, transportation and food costs. “It’s an amazing program,” she said. Additionally, seven $1,000 education bursaries are awarded annually, to high school and college students. Support was provided to help establish a 4-H poultry club and the Little Chefs program at College of the Rockies. “We try to provide healthier lifestyles for some children that may not have that opportunity at home,” she said. “I think we are really trying to promote the importance of food and eating well.” Even when Gleaners and Gleaners Too aren’t open to the public, the facilities buzz with activity. A roster of 100-plus volunteers helps keep the operation running. “There are probably 20-30 volunteers here every weekday,” Goulder said. Gates to the parking lots are open from 1-5 p.m. on the weekends and all day during the week. Monitors accept the donations, making sure that Gleaners isn’t being used as a landfill alternative. The additional security was a response to help reduce costs and the headache of making regular runs to the landfill. “Our dump fees were astronomical, and the RDCK doesn’t give us a break (they’re about the only ones that don’t),” Goulder said. “Things have been much improved by the monitoring.” Of course not all donations can be sold locally. Every five or six weeks a truckload of more than 10 tons of clothing, linens,

and shoes is shipped off to the Lower Mainland, where all items are recycled. “Over the last five-and-a-half years we have recycled more than a million pounds of goods,” Goulder said. “That’s incredible.” The challenge is to keep pace with the donations, sorting what can be sold in the stores, what can be sold in a different season and what can be shipped off to be sold in bulk. “This morning at Gleaners Too, three or four of us were working for four or five hours because we were just plugged with dropped-off items,” Syroteuk said. Items are sorted, those that need it are washed (all stuffed toys are laundered) and then priced, typically at about 10 per cent of the retail value. “Even on open days, donations are coming in and people are working to deal with those,” she said. “It’s a revolving door. We have three sets of washers and dryers going all the time.” Some community groups raise money by volunteering for special needs. When high school and cadet groups are hired to load recyclables onto a truck, they get a $150 donation. Each truckload sent off to Maple Ridge nets Gleaners about $2,500. “We have tripled what we get in back from them,” Goulder said. “Some is resold, lots is used for medical rags. Some might end up overseas — we don’t really know. If something is out of style it might not sell here, but if someone in a Third World country needs a shirt, they don’t really care about style.” Creston Valley Gleaners Society has grown dramatically since its inception 25 years ago, when three women organized to pick up excess local produce to distribute to those in need.

“Can you imagine what our landfill would be without all that we recycle through here?” Syroteuk asked. Goulder said Gleaners also works with other local recyclers. About 30 pickup loads of electronic items are delivered annually to New Life Furniture and Recycling. Cardboard and metal goes to other recycling businesses. “We are probably the biggest recycling hub in the Kootenays, bar none,” Goulder said. “As far as we know, we are the only self-funding food bank in North America. We raise all our own funds. We don’t get any government grants. “Our goal eventually is to have a blueprint of what we do and be able to go around to other towns, especially with food banks, and see if our model might work for them. “This is an amazing place. I come from Calgary and I’m just blown away with Gleaners. Nothing compares to this place — it doesn’t stink or smell mouldy. The dedication here is amazing. And people in those other places get paid, so you think they would run better. But they don’t. “We’re all about helping other organizations. And if we see a good idea elsewhere we aren’t afraid to try it.” The volunteer effort is remarkable. Volunteers put in more than 33,000 hours last year. Despite their efforts, though, information about Gleaners and how it works needs to be continually reinforced. “It’s a slow process of educating people and it never stops,” Syroteuk said. “We encourage individuals who think only low income people should shop here to come and volunteer. Then they see that there is so much stock rolling through here that we never run out.”

PAWS Volunteer of the Month for October is Carol Wolfe! Carol has been involved with PAWS since late 2011, originally applying for the position of Caretaker when we first introduced the job. Although that never materialized we gained a valuable volunteer. She has over time been part of the office volunteers, involved in fundraising, introduced new members and volunteers, helped with the dogs and finally really found her niche with cat care at the shelter. A lady slight of stature and quiet disposition, she has certainly made a big impact in the cat quarters! Whenever she is around we can relax knowing that the cat area is well cleaned, from walls to kitty litter to vacuuming the perches and scratch pads. When in the cat areas singing and conversation can be heard. “Who is in there with Carol? Just her and the cats.” I have no doubt that the cats ( as well as other volunteers) are always pleased to see Carol and her smiling face come through the shelter doors. From page 1 “It’s very confusing for many citizens,” he said. “When it comes to the Kootenay River, you have to talk to the federal government. For other waterways it’s the provincial government. And in both any number of different ministries might be involved.” Designed to bring together informed speakers to identify overarching water issues, the forum will look for proactive ways to support management in the Kootenay-Columbia region. “Water is critical to every facet of our existence,” he said. Also scheduled to speak are hydrologist and water steward officer Antoine Beriault of the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, Ron Popoff of Interior Health and Ryan van der Marel, Wildsight program co-ordinator. Lower Kootenay Band Chief Jason Louie will open the session with a blessing and has also been asked to speak on water issues as they relate to his community. From page 1 The Canadian Wildlife Service built the centre in the early 1970s, and ran it until the CVWMA took over in the mid-1980s. Up to 2,500 students and 13,000 visitors go through the centre each year to take in interpretive programs that promote and educate about wetland conservation and biodiversity. The interpretation centre currently runs from mid-May to mid-October, five days a week in the off-season and seven from July through Labour Day. It has a full-time manager who works yearround, and employs three or four summer students. Whatever happens with the centre, the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area’s trails network would remain open, as most of them are actually cleared to provide staff with access to the vast area. “The biggest value of the visitor centre is education for students,” said Beaucher. “It’s certainly very valuable for the valley and the region.” Ideas and suggestions for the future operation of the centre can be sent to Creston Valley Wildlife Management Authority, P.O. Lister hunter brings 25 years of adventure to life in new book BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff A carpenter by trade and a hunter by obsession, Lister resident Rob Shatzko has published some of his life’s most memorable experiences in Unquenchable Spirit: Twenty-five Years in Pursuit of Adventure. The book chronicles Shatzko’s introduction to the rarified world of trophy hunting, and the development of a deep philosophy that comes only with long days and nights alone in the wilderness and more face-to-face meetings with death than one person should experience. It takes readers around the Pacific Northwest, into the Yukon and High Arctic, and across oceans to rarely heard of countries in Asia. Shatzko is an adventurer, a horseman, a loner, a student and a teacher. Now, in partnership with his wife, Collette, he has become a writer. The book is published by Safari Press, which markets its publications directly toward hunters and outdoorsmen. Shatzko started thinking about writing a book 10 years ago, after he survived his second attack by a grizzly bear. “I thought this kind of stuff doesn’t happen to normal people,” he said. “I should start writing it down.” He didn’t, though. “I was busy with life,” he laughed. “Then I realized I was starting to forget stuff. They would come back when I looked at photos. But a mind is like a hard drive, I think. Eventually it gets full.” It was on a six-week Hawaiian vacation two years ago that he actually sat down to record some of his many adventures as a trophy hunter. He worked at the computer while his wife Colette, a professional writer, went for walks. Or, as she wrote in the book’s preface: “And so I awake in paradise to the clackety-

“He was outside on their property in Lister.” When I got a sad and very unexpected call on Saturday that Joe Meers had died, I just had to ask where Joe had died. It isn’t a question that I normally would have asked under the circumstances, but it seemed important — I don’t know of many people who were more attached to their rural property than Joe and his wife, Lika. “It’s how he would have chosen to go,” I said to his daughter, who quickly agreed. It’s hard to imagine a world without Joe Meers. He has long ranked among my most unforgettable characters. Not that I knew him intimately, but on our occasional chats and visits I inevitably left smiling, thinking this planet was a better place for his presence on it. For as long as I can remember, when the word judo comes up, I have immediately thought of this small man, a man who was the epitome of what martial arts study can do for an individual. He carried with him a quiet confidence. He was the sort of man you’d want to have at your side if you were in trouble. I once visited Joe and Lika’s house in town to do an interview for a story about his retirement from the Creston Judo Club. They were Old World hosts, gracious and completely accommodating. My reputation as a wine lover preceded me — “Would you like a glass of wine?” Joe asked, gesturing to a bottle and glasses already set out on the table. I couldn’t help but laugh. No
thanks, I demurred, it’s a little early. I think it was probably about 10 a.m. “How about a cup of coffee?” Lika offered. I accepted and soon we were sitting at the dining table, sip-
The decision to choose a fixed or variable rate is not always an easy one. It should depend on your tolerance for risk as well as your ability to withstand increases in mortgage payments. You can sometimes expect a financial reward for going with the variable rate, although the precise magnitude will change depending on the economic environment. For example, this past spring you could lock in a five-year fixed rate of 2.89 per cent. The average variable rate was very close to this, so there was really no incentive to take the variable. Fast forward to now and the spread has increased. The current five-year fixed rate is around 3.6 per cent, and the average variable somewhere around 2.6 per cent. So now that there is a one per cent difference in the rate, some people may prefer to take the risk of rates going up in the future for the current savings of the variable. It really depends on each person’s risk tolerance and financial situation. Fixed-rate mortgages often appeal to clients who want stability in their payments, manage a tight monthly budget or are generally more conservative. For example, young couples with large mortgages relative to their income might be better off opting for the peace of mind that a fixed-rate brings. Fixed-rate mortgages are gen-
erally much easier to qualify for. A variable-rate mortgage often allows the borrower to take advantage of lower rates — the interest rate is calculated on an ongoing

fixed rate things aren’t quite as simple. It can be either three months’ interest or the interest rate differential. Again, this can vary from lender to lender, but the basics are usually the same. If the prevailing interest rate is higher than the rate you are locked in at, you will most likely just have to pay three months’ interest. But if the prevailing interest rate is lower than the rate you are locked in at, the lender is going to charge interest rate differential. This is basically the difference between the rate you are locked in at and the prevailing rate, multiplied by the length left on your term, multiplied by the size of your mortgage. Calculations for this vary from lender to lender, and can be quite complex. It is an important thing to be aware of, though, as penalties can become quite large depending on the length of time remaining, size of mortgage and amount interest rates have gone down. As a consumer, the best option is to have a candid discussion with your mortgage professional to ensure you have a full understanding of the risks and rewards of each type of mortgage. basis at a lenders’ prime rate minus a set percentage. For example, if the prime mortgage rate is three per cent, the holder of a prime minus 0.4 per cent mortgage would pay a 2.6 per cent variable interest rate. But if interest rates go up to four per cent, their new rate becomes 3.6 per cent. Most lenders do allow borrowers to lock in to a fixed rate during their contract, though. So if two years into a five-year variable-rate term, a borrower decided they wanted to limit their risk, they could lock into the current three-year rate with that lender. This does vary a bit from lender to lender on how exactly it is done. Another thing to take into account is payout penalties. With a variablerate mortgage the usual payout penalty is three months’ interest. With a

School district right to stand up to ministry To the Editor: When I heard through the media that the Ministry of Education had awarded a salary increase to school district CUPE workers, I was pleased for them. These employees do a fantastic job maintaining our schools and keeping them clean, in spite of the fact that over the years many positions have been cut and the workload increased so that our district board can continue to provide basic educational programs for our children. When I later heard that school districts were expected to pay, out of existing budgets, for the raises that government awarded, was I surprised? Not too much. Though ministry officials will proclaim their annual increases in educational budgets, they fail to mention that increases do not keep up to the rise in inflation, so in fact budgets are continuously decreasing in the services they can provide. School districts have been struggling to maintain basic services for decades, and in fact have had to cut many corners in maintaining structural integrity of buildings and equipment. It’s no picnic for trustees struggling to keep the system functioning. This was a major factor leading to my own decision to leave trusteeship after 12 years of service. It was with sincere admiration and pride that I listened to the news of the current board of trustees of School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) having the courage to inform the ministry that no, we have no place to find the money to pay for the increases granted to CUPE without damage to the edu-

cational programs we are committed to provide. You have done yourself proud, and I am sure you are the envy of most of the school districts in the province, which would have liked to taken the stand you have but did not quite have the gumption to do so. What you have said desperately needed saying, and I hope it provides the spark for other boards to become more forthright. On this occasion, I truly miss being with you. Bob Ewashen Creston
MP Wilks states errors as facts in recent story To the Editor: (Re: “MP says Parliament Session will be Productive”, Oct. 24, page 1) There are misconceptions in Kootenay-Columbia MP David Wilks’s statements in the Creston Valley Advance. First, the trades deal with Europe and the so-called creation of 80,000 jobs. What 80,000 jobs? I believe in trade, and if trade deals are properly implemented to benefit all the people, this should be the way of future. But, the declaration of the creation of 80,000 jobs with this European trade deal, when right now Canada suffers a huge trade deficit (within its present trading bloc arrangements), does not make any sense. So what that means is that presently we import way more than we export. We presently have trading laws/blocs in place to export, but we are now not able to export enough. How is that
supposed to happen with another trading deal if the government does not help the people to create jobs to export? What are the jobs that will be created? Maybe the creation of the 80,000 jobs is in Europe? Wilks comments on youth involved in trades and “Mr. Plumber makes $4060 an hour.” Trades are in demand only in certain hot spots in Canada, mainly Fort McMurray, Alta. There are an abundance of trades in our area, and they cannot get enough work because there are too many of them right now. I know people in this area that have had to cease their apprenticeship because of this. Foreign workers were brought in, mainly to Fort McMurray, for other labourer-type work. And, workers from Fort McMurray, mainly union, have been looked over because of these foreign workers. “Sometimes there’s barriers interprovincially” — right now that is what happens when you get your inter-provincial trade ticket. I’m not sure what the problem is; it works quite well. “If we create a new legislation, we have to remove one” — why? Often, legislation is brought in because it is needed (it is the hope that lawmakers will do that). Past governments have debated and worked hard on instigating legislation. If the past legislation does not help society as whole, absolutely get rid of it, but getting rid of it just for sake of getting rid of something is ridiculous. It is wrong, because someone thinks they are in power, to just pull created statements from the air, declare them truth and think the people are going to believe you. And… That also addresses the problem with the Senate issue right now: Instead of using investigated, proven facts to deal with this issue, the government decides to declare as truth what they did or did not say (and that can change from month to month) and the people are supposed to believe them. we started to provide a safe alternative for young kids schlepping up and down the streets; we have always gotten a crowd partaking in the various games and activities. This year was no exception, as we saw over 150 little goblins, ghosts and princesses traverse around the Creston Room testing their skills and picking up some swag in their treat bags. Yes, I know some of you are saying, “What about the Health and Wellness philosophy?” and we hear you — but at this point we feel it is better to provide a safe environment and gradually work our way up to handing out broccoli and pine nuts. On the aquatic scene, we had our Annual Slime Swim Oct. 27 and wow! It was the best yet with 217 participants — we almost made capacity in the pool, which then earns the guards on duty some special recognition. Slime Swim is always pretty cool, with the main lights dimmed and the underwater ones on; creating a spooky marine setting that would have even Count Floyd scared. We even went through about 125 caramel apples, which once you gnawed through the caramel, you had a pretty healthy, locally grown apple. We got great feedback from both exhibitors and the public as to how we can improve upon the event next year, which is great; it can be dicey starting new events, and getting enough support and momentum to generate that critical mass that creates a life of its own, but it appears that we are on our way. Big events made October busy
October stacked up as one of our busier months, what with many program starts as well as several big events around the facility, including Ducks Unlimited, Columbia Basin Trust symposium, the Health and Wellness Fair, Halloween Hysteria and the Gleaners coat sale. Calling for some pretty rapid room turnarounds, intensified focus on cleaning and some concentrated administrative and programming requirements, staff rose to the occasion as they always do and by the end of the month, we had accumulated some pretty nice comments from all concerned. The CBT symposium was interesting for us as we saw approximately 280 participants move around the facility into various sessions, breakout rooms and meals over a couple days. Providing significantly more to the community than facility rental revenue, the impact of close to 300 people moving around our valley, staying at our motels, buying gas, coffee and other bits and pieces is huge. Not only do events like this provide huge economic impact to the valley, they showcase what we have to offer as a community and I heard many positive comments along that line. I’m not sure if you had a chance to take in the Health and Wellness Fair at the Creston and District Community

Jake & Tiny
These very small Shih-Tzu dogs are father (6 years old) and son (4 years old). Both are neutered, cuddly, and love human contact. They are quite bonded and would prefer to go to a new home together. They're in good health and have their shots up to date.

HOW IT WORKS | After registering on MOVEMBER.COM,, men start the month clean-shaven, then grow and groom their Mo (slang for moustache), asking friends and family to donate to their efforts. With their new moustaches, these Mo Bros act as walking and talking billboards, bringing awareness and funds to combating men’s health issues such as prostate and testicular cancer, as well as facing mental health challenges. sponsored by In 2012, over 1.1 million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas around the world joined the movement, raising $146.6 million.

MAURICE MELENDEZ-DUKE February 2, 1923 ~ June 3, 2009 Maurice was born in San Salvador, El Salvador. He never lived in Creston. As a young lad, his parents sent him to the University Boys’ School in Victoria, BC for his eduction. When WWII broke out, he volunteered and joined the Canadian Scottish Regiment (Princess Mary’s) 1st Battalion. He was shipped to Scotland for training and was assigned to a mortar group. On June 6, 1944 (D-Day), he landed on Juno Beach and suffered shrapnel wounds, but was able to keep up with his battalion. At the conclusion of the war, he was in Germany, but along the way, he met his future bride in Holland. Maurice and his new wife returned to Salvador, but in 1950 his love of Canada caused him to return to Victoria. On June 6, 2009 (the 65th anniversary of his landing on Juno Beach), his extended family gathered in Victoria for his final prayer service and cremation. Service dog helps vet with post-traumatic stress BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
“Have you noticed all the veteran licence plates on many vehicles all around town?” Brenda Dempsey wonders. “Or perhaps the veteran plate frame under the licence plate? Have you said a friendly hello or waved to a vet?” Her questions were stimulated by an incident in October. Dempsey works as a bartender/volunteer at Creston’s Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 29. She sees lots of characters in her work, and knows that most people have a story that emerges when there is someone around who will listen. On Oct. 5, she took the time to be the listener. “Alan Armstrong came into the legion and stated that there was a veteran outside who was unsure about coming in as he didn’t know if we were dog friendly,” she recalls. “I asked Alan if the dog was a service dog. He didn’t know, so I stepped outside to speak to the gentleman.“ She learned that dog was, indeed, a service dog named T.J. So she invited man and dog into the legion. “This is his story,” she said. Jim Collins is a member of the legion in Kamloops, who served the military with two tours to Afghanistan, serving with the Rocky Mountain Rangers. Like so many enlisted men and women who are posted to combat
zones, Collins “had a rough time over there.” He came back a different man. Returning to one’s previous life is often difficult, even impossible, after going through the experience of living in a war-torn country. Post-traumatic stress disorder is not uncommon. Few are able to simply pick up their lives from where they left off. Horrific images, the sounds of gunfire and bursting bombs, constant fear of being attacked or shot at from any direction — the memories remain long after one has returned home. Chances are they will never go away. “Jim heard of a program where dogs are trained to help vets just like him,” Dempsey learned.“ He applied to Citadel Canine Society. It took quite awhile but he was accepted and received a phone call from Diana Miller.”
Miller is a familiar sight around the streets of Creston. She trains service dogs, which seem to have a remarkable, intuitive ability to sense the needs of the person they are eventually matched with. “Diana had a five-year-old German shepherd retired from show that she received from PAWS. She trained her and believed her to be the perfect fit for Jim.” Collins was told he could visit Creston and see how he and the dog got along. If all went well, he could take the dog home with him. “When he arrived to see, T.J. she ran right to Jim and began lovin’ on him,” Dempsey said she was told. “It was like love at first sight!

FRANK L. MATTHEWS Frank L. Matthews, son of Samuel Matthews who was with the British Imperial Army in India, ‘A’ Battery, “B: Brigade, in Khandahar during the Afghan rebellion. World War I, Frank enlisted in the 175 Battalion, was sent overseas, to France in ‘A’ Company: Ypres, Passchendale, Amiens front. After the Armistice was declared, was returned to Canada on the Aquitania with 12,000 troops on board. Passed away in Creston in 1983. Photo was taken before sailing abroad.
He only had T.J. for two hours before arriving at the legion. Anyone could see the bond they formed in that short period of time. “When they arrive at the Kamloops legion, T.J. will become an honorary member,” she said. “The president of Branch 52 plans on making her a true member.” “I thanked him for serving our country and gave him our Legion ribbon and pin. I suggested that he make a corkboard for T.J. with all the ribbons she receives at the various legions. I also asked him to keep us updated and send us a
picture when she receives her membership.” Dempsey thinks that her chance meeting with a Canadian veteran gave her some up-close-and-personal insight into the life of a man who has served his country and is working to find his way back into the society he left as a younger, perhaps less wise man. “So, next time you see a driver with a vet plate — thank him for all that vets gave up for us! Maybe even think about buying a plate for a valued vet.”

settled the Islands in pre-Columbian times. Heyerdahl and five other men crossed the Pacific Ocean in a balsawood raft in an attempt to prove his theory. The film tells the story of the 101-day trip across 8,000 kilometres and addresses the origin of the idea, the preparations and the events on the trip. The re-enactment of the voyage, from the coast of Peru to the Polynesian Islands, portrays the challenges of storms, sharks and other dangers of the open sea. While much of the film is historically accurate, both screenwriter Petter Skavlan and director Joachim Ronning admit to making the story more exciting for their two-hour feature film. The film was nominated for the best foreign language Oscar at the 85th Academy Awards and a Golden Globe for best foreign language film award at the 2013 Golden Globe Awards. Join Friends of the Cinema on this exciting and interesting voyage, which runs at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 18 at the Prince Charles Theatre.
Kevin Armstrong has forged a career in both Canada and Europe, performing everything from traditional opera and musical theatre to one-man shows where he pairs his four-octave vocal range with his skills as a guitarist. His latest project, A Night at the Rock Opera — which he brings to Creston Nov. 15 — is amazing on two fronts: In the first half, Armstrong performs a one-man version of the classic rock opera, Tommy, by The Who. The second half features an original piece of conceptual rock music, entitled ∞+1. The show will be enhanced with interactive visuals, creating a spectacular listening experience. Armstrong grew up in Nelson. He started music lessons by age 10, and by college had already studied classical, jazz and rock guitar, drums and voice. After completing a master’s degree in vocal performance at McGill University in Montreal, Armstrong moved to Zurich, Switzerland, where he did an apprenticeship at the Zurich Opera House. There he had the opportunity to perform onstage next to some of the biggest names in the opera world. See ARMSTRONG, page 15

Armstrong From page 12 Armstrong’s show, Opera for Heathens, was a hit at numerous fringe festivals (Edmonton, 2011; Vancouver, 2012; Toronto, 2013), playing to sold-out houses and rave reviews. Some of Armstrong’s recent credits include the world-premiere of the opera Khaos with Nelson Community Opera, the roles of Pilate and Judas in numerous productions of Jesus Christ Superstar, as well as opera performances in Frankfurt, Wiesbaden and Zurich. He also recently completed a 60-city tour of Germany, Austria and Switzerland with Night of the Musicals, Europe’s longestrunning touring musical show, as well as a recital tour of the B.C. Interior with internationally renowned organist Robert Kwan. The Who’s Tommy, released in 1969, was a milestone recording, virtually inventing the genre of rock opera. The story follows the titular character’s mystical experiences after losing all senses after a childhood trauma. He eventually becomes a messianic figure through his amazing pinball prowess, and he builds a huge cult following, only to eventually see it collapse from under him. ∞+1 is a new work created by Armstrong (concept, music, lyrics), and dOUG nORMAL (lyrics). It tells the story of a man so desperate to lose himself in a dream world that he creates a computer powerful enough to upload his consciousness, with life-changing consequences. It’s a conceptalbum in the style of Yes and Genesis, and musically covers the spectrum from grandiose progressive rock, acoustic ballads, and jazz-influenced heavy metal. A Night at the Rock Opera is being presented with the support of the Columbia Basin Trust and the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance, and will be great opportunity to a see a world-class talent on the local stage. The Nov. 15 show begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Prince Charles Theatre. Tickets are $12$15 on a sliding scale.

musician who cut his teeth on a piano, and picked up his first violin when he was five. He was schooled in Vivaldi concertos and old-time fiddle; by 12 years old, he had travelled the continent, competing nationally and performing alongside his musician father and sisters in the Huscroft Family Band. In 2000, Huscroft began playing guitar with U.S. recording artist Sarah Kelly, and went on to write for her first two major albums, Take Me Away and Between the Lines, both of which garnished Grammy nominations and further awards. In 2003, Huscroft returned to Canada and put together his own band in Calgary. Strada was a wildly popular indie rock band booked by Feldman, sharing tours with Switchfoot and Stabilo Tea Party, and winning numerous battles of the bands. In 2006, Huscroft began experimenting with an acoustic approach to his instrumental work, replacing the pick with his fingers. In Vancouver, he connected with singer/songwriters Ryan McAllister and Barnaby McRae, and recorded the Cowboys and Indians album. In the spring of 2010, Huscroft released his first solo album, Here Is Just For Now. Funded in part by a grant from the Canadian Council for the Arts, and co-produced by Mendez, the record is a stark departure from the electric guitar-driven rock and pop of his past. Recorded live with a finger style acoustic guitar and full string section, the album abounds with what he calls “Kootenay moments” — tracks inspired by the generations of Huscrofts who made their home and their lifeblood in the southern British Columbia, Canada hills and valleys. The result is a sense of haunting mountain solitude with unexpectedly sweet song and gruff soulful vocals that transition to serene falsetto and back again. A songwriter in every situation and a dedicated player, Shiplett’s passion for quality music and sincere songs is only matched by his goal to get everyone dancing. Recently he was the recipient of Rawlco Radio’s 10k20 grant program in his hometown of Calgary, Alta. Following the grant, he recorded his first full-length album, which was released April 2012. Recorded at Five Acres Studios in Aldergrove with the help of Mcallister, the album showcases heartfelt moments full of life experience, right alongside bursts of boisterous feelgood rock and roll. Shiplett believes in creating and encouraging quality art in Canada; in entertaining and inspiring people across this great country. Tickets to the Nov. 9 show are $15 in advance at Black Bear Books, Buffalo Trails Coffee House and Kingfisher Used Books, and $18 at the door, which opens at 6; the show begins at 7.

Recruitment program brings docs to valley BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

Creston Mayor Ron Toyota (centre) signs a proclamation for Family Doctor Week, while Dr. Nerine Kleinhans (left) and recruitment program co-ordinator Marilin States look on.
Proclamation Family Doctor Week 2013 W W

W
hereas, we have an outstanding group of dedicated and skilled family physicians serving the inpatient and outpatient needs of our community; and
W T
hereas, we appreciate our family physicians for their commitment to the health and well-being of our residents;
herefore, I, Ron Toyota, Mayor, do hereby proclaim the week of November 4 - 9, 2013, in the Town of Creston as “Family Doctor Week” Signed this 18th day of October, 2013
Ron Toyota, Mayor
“We are very fortunate to have a successful program that has helped us attract physicians to the Creston Valley, and to encourage them to stay,” said Mayor Ron Toyota as he signed a proclamation he described as being close to his heart. Family Doctor Week — Nov. 4-9 this year — recognizes the value of family physicians in a community, acknowledging the commitment they make to their patients’ health and wellness. “With our recruitment program, first co-ordinated by Deryn Collier and now by Marilin States, we have been able to attract physicians to our community,” Toyota said. “Perhaps just as important, they have been people who also have young families. They come here because we have a wonderful community and natural environment, but also because this is a great place to raise children.” Being a family doctor in a rural area has its challenges, too. In recognition of Family Doctor Week, the Advance asked local physicians to comment on the joys and challenges of practicing in the Creston Valley. Day-to-day diversity in her work helps keep her skills and knowledge current, Dr. Carrie Armstrong said. “The best thing is the opportunity to do it all — full continuum of care with great colleagues (doctors and all hospital staff). And living in a place that is great for families. I love the area and the community.” “As for challenges, it is important to protect time with family,” she added. “Sometimes cases can be stressful to manage with limited resources.” Dr. Barry Oberleitner spoke of the natural surroundings, too, and also about balance and his colleagues. “The work and family life balance is good,” he said. “Work colleagues are incredibly good people.” “Creston is a wonderful community that offers a diverse, challenging spectrum of medicine,” Dr. Atma Persad said. Challenges are many, though, he admitted. “Physicians who practice in Creston need to have acute/critical care/emergency skills, as well as those medical skills to manage hospital in-patients (and clinic skills), all without easy access to specialists,” he said. “Not only is there is a shortage of physicians who have these skills but this type of demanding work increases the stress of working here.” “The best thing about practicing in Creston? It’s such a beautiful area,” said Dr. Fay MacKay. Regarding the challenges of keeping doctors in rural areas, she said, “The main reason people seem to want to move centre
around family issues (they want better/different educational opportunities for children, or better/different employment opportunities for spouses), and getting burnt out from too much work (this has not happened recently but has in the past).” Dr. Erin Ewing quickly names climate as being a positive factor. “The physical climate is fantastic and the four seasons activities are wonderful,” he said. “The political climate is supportive and proactive. The climate of the community is a perfect blend of small town and ‘a happening place’.” But small communities also seem to share one thing in common. “The fishbowl. Everyone knows you and many of them want to know your business.” “The best thing about Creston is its community life,” said Dr. Raphael Elemuo. “Everybody is a brother’s keeper in Creston. There is harmony and peace here. Creston doctors work for each other. … “One of the challenges rural doctors face is getting their patients to higher levels of care at appropriate time. Locum doctors are not readily available when they are needed at short notice.” The positives and drawbacks of practicing in a rural community are often the same, said Dr. Randy Grahn, chief of staff at Creston Valley Hospital. “The things that have been observed contributing to the challenge of keeping docs in rural communities are also the thing that bring them here; being a GP in a small rural community requires the kind of doctor that thrives on challenge and independence,” he said. “General practice is the most challenging medicine, and rural general practice relying on local colleagues is the most challenging of those. “This takes a doctor that is committed to and thrives on the challenge, who finds the work interesting and rewarding. Keeping docs here is often related to the work-life balance. The workload must allow the docs time to be with their families and enjoy what a rural lifestyle offers. Their family must be happy and feel connected to the community and have the kinds and amounts of recreational and educational opportunities they require.” Toyota said the community has jumped to the challenge of recruiting and retaining physicians. “Construction of the aquatic centre and expansion and upgrades to the entire community complex were a message from citizens of the Creston Valley — we are people who invest in our community,” he said. “On behalf of those citizens, I want to thank our local physicians for their continued commitment to our health, and for their belief that our community has much to offer.”

Thunder Cats take first place in KIJHL division BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
The Creston Valley Thunder Cats are at the top of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League’s Eddie Mountain Division after two victories over the Kimberley Dynamiters on the weekend. The first was a 5-2 win at Creston’s John Bucyk Arena, which saw the teams fairly evenly matched in the early portion of the game. “It was as tight game all the way through until the third period, and then we kind of exploded,” said head coach Josh Hepditch. Scoring started at 15:09 in the first period, when Marcel Fuchs scored a shorthanded goal for the Thunder Cats. “It was his first of the year and a big way to get things going for us,” said Hepditch. Trevor Hanna and Brandon Formosa netted power-play goals in the second period, with the Dynamiters’ first goal in between. After a Dynamiters’ power-play goal early in the third period, Tyler Podgorenko and Hanna added two more to the Thunder Cats’ score. Goalie Brock Lefebvre played well in net, Hepditch noted, blocking all but two of the Dynamiters’ 27 shots. On Saturday, the Thunder Cats visited the Dynamiters, ready for a game that could allow them to pull three points ahead of the second-place Kimberley team.
Hepditch. “Kimberley played really well both nights, so that was the confidence builder.” After those games, the Thunder Cats have 22 points, and secondplace Kimberley has 19, tied with the Fernie Ghostriders. The Columbia Valley Rockies have 17 points, with the Golden Rockets at the bottom of the division with 14. This weekend, the Thunder Cats stay home for three games, hosting the Kamloops Storm on Friday, the Grand Forks Border Bruins on Saturday and the Nelson Leafs on Sunday. Kamloops and Nelson are at the top of their divisions, with 26
and 32 points, respectively. “It definitely doesn’t get easier, that’s for sure,” said Hepditch. “Every team is going to be gunning for you now. You can’t take any nights off. It won’t be in your favour.” But this weekend is also parents’ weekend for the Thunder Cats, who will enjoy a rare chance to play in front of visiting family and friends. And all fans are encouraged to wear white to Friday’s game to show support for the local team with a “white out”. “It will definitely be fun for them, and definitely fun for the kids, as well,” said Hepditch.

Creston Valley Thunder Cats forward Trevor Hanna during Friday’s game, in which he scored two goals.
“It was a war, that’s for sure,” said Hepditch of the 5-2 win. “We knew if we didn’t get two points there, Friday night’s game was a waste.” As with the previous night’s game, the Thunder Cats really hit their stride in the third period. The Dynamiters scored late in the first period, and Logan Styler made a powerplay goal for the Thunder Cats in the middle of the second,
tying the score 1-1 going into the third. The third period started with a Kimberley goal, but that was followed by Thunder Cats goals by Styler, Hanna, Colby Livingstone and Formosa, with all but Hanna’s scored on power plays — which totalled four for eight for the Thunder Cats that night. “That was the difference in that game, really,” said

just a few minutes later. Eddie Blackmore retaliated, scoring Creston’s second goal at 7:43 in the second period, assisted by Tyler Everitt and Makortoff. Invermere evened the score once again, closer to the end of the second period. Skating hard and refusing to give up, Owen Blackmore, Zach Van Ruyskensvelde, scored again for Creston at 11:04 in the third period. Again, the Invermere team evened the score and then pulled ahead by one. Creston worked hard and tied the score at 4:44 in the third period, finishing the

The first and most of the second period remained scoreless, until after a hard battle Invermere scored their first goal at the end of the second period.
