Partnering in chemistry Submitted College of the Rockies chemistry students got a chance to use technology to complete a recent experiment thanks, in part, to Thompson Rivers University (TRU) and the BC Integrated Laboratory Network (BCILN). The BC-ILN, launched in 2006, began with the goal of providing access to instruments from TRU while also determining if remote instrument use provides a valid learning experience for the student participants. College of the Rockies’ students, in an effort to determine Rocky Mountain

the iron content in a multi-vitamin, began the experiment at the Cranbrook campus where they prepared a sample from the vitamin tablets. The sample was then sent to the TRU campus where an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) analyzed the solution. Using Skype, COTR students were able to see the atomic absorption spectrometer in operation through one computer while controlling the analysis of their samples through a second computer. “This is a great opportunity for us to compliment an existing lab at the College with the use of an instru-
ment smaller institutions don’t often have access to,” says University Studies Coordinator and Chemistry instructor David Dick. “We look forward to offering this opportunity to our students again next year and we will explore the possibility of adding new experiments.” To learn more about the experiment go to: http://bit.ly/cotrchem101. Catch the Spirit at the Tamarack Centre Submitted Just in time for the holiday season, the Tamarack Centre has announced their 2013 Catch the Spirit campaign. The campaign itself will run throughout the holidays and encourage Canadians to get festive online and at their local Bentall Kennedymanaged shopping centres throughout Canada. Campaign elements include over $25,000 worth of prizes and an opportunity to nominate a holiday hometown hero. “This festive time of year is all about giving and goodwill and our nominate a Holiday Hero program will profile the good deeds of those that have caught the spirit. We’re excited to give a $500 shopping spree for the best act of kindness,” said Domenic Imbesi, regional director marketing retail services. The Catch the Spirit website will feature everything from digital colouring pages and
online storytime to letters to Santa, holiday E-cards, interactive gift guides and a Christmas cookbook and crafts section. Catch the spirit will also feature an ‘ask and expert’ forum, where a team of specialists will be on hand to answer any and all holiday questions and queries. The website, which can be accessed at www.tamarackcentre.ca will officially launch on November 15. The largest components of the campaign will be the shopping spree contest and holiday hero nominations. The shopping spree contest will give those who enter the chance to not only win one of two $10,000 cash prizes but also receive an additional $2,500 that will be donated to a charity of their choice. Shoppers are encourage to enter at the Tamarack Centre website, via Facebook page or in-person at the mall display. The Holiday Hero portion of the campaign will allow applicants to nominate a

Whether a helpful neighbour, school teacher, firefighter, caregiver of sports coach, Catch the Spirit’s Hero Committee wants to hear from citizens about the extraordinary members of their community. “We’re thrilled to be able to promote Catch the Spirit throughout the country this holiday season. It’s a way to support consumers and make the holiday season all the more festive,” said Bonney Rempel, regional director, marketing and retail services west at Bentall Kennedy. In addition, the Catch the Spirit website will feature a Christmas Tune Jukebox where visitors can listen to their favourite holiday tunes, a thermometer keeping us up to date with the cold weather temperatures at the North Pole, trivia to test your Christmas knowledge, and coupon offers from participating shopping centres. Inflammatory bowel disease
Over the last few weeks I have had some kick back against the anti-flu vaccine articles I have written with people expressing anger that I am so publicly writing that flu vaccines don't work. I truly wish they did; however, the scientific reality is that they are largely ineffective. This is not my opinion. The Cochrane Collaboration is a group of independent scientists (i.e.: researchers that do not benefit from selling flu vaccines) who work to help healthcare practitioners, policy makers and patients make well-informed decisions about health care. Their research is easily accessible and can be found at Cochrane Reviews. If you read the studies on this topic you will find that almost all of the flu studies that incorrectly show flu vaccines are highly effective are done by the very people who make the vaccines - a clear conflict of interest. On to a different topic: Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Crohns, Colitis, and Diverticulitis).

Many of the patients I see each week have digestive troubles ranging from bloating, diarrhea, blood or mucous in the stool and abdominal pain. Most of these people have been prescribed medication to help manage these uncomfortable and limiting symptoms (one woman I saw a few weeks ago was afraid to leave her home for fear of having an accident). As with any health issue, it is crucial to treat the cause of the problem, rather than simply managing the symptoms. To treat IBD requires dietary modification, eliminating intestinal health irritants, probiotic supplementation and supplementing with specific nutrition to correct underlying deficiencies. Over the next few weeks I will highlight key aspects to treating inflammatory bowel disease. Most people who follow this approach can reduce or eliminate their medication, have more freedom with not always having to know where the nearest bathroom is, are no longer depressed and have much more energy.

(From left) EKFH Chair Brian Clifford (2 from right) celebrates with Eagles Nest RV Resort’s Betty Shannon, Larry Warren and Joan Poweska (representing the residents, managers & owners) who will officially light the 1st star to kick off the 2013 Starlite Campaign. Submitted With a few snowflakes in the air and the anticipated hustle and bustle of holiday shopping around the corner East Kootenay Foundation for Health is preparing for its largest annual holiday fundraiser ~ the Starlite Campaign. The 6th annual event is scheduled to kick off at the end of November coinciding with the City of Cranbrook’s annual light up festivities. In the meantime the foundation’s volunteer and dedicated Starmakers have been busy refurbishing the stars thanks to the generous donations of lighting materials from BL Lighting in Vancouver (Betty Lou Pacey & team) and Jim Amy of EB Horsman in Cranbrook. The Starlite Campaign is also refocusing slightly as it becomes the sole signature event of EKFH, including a new refreshing logo and a focus on supporting community health care initiatives across the region. According to Donna Grainger, Executive

Director of EKFH, the stars are a tribute to the many donors (past, current and new) who recognize the importance of the foundation’s mission and believes that by lighting stars on the rooftop of the East Kootenay Regional Hospital, the foundation and region can come together to make some holiday magic. And making magic is already happening with a wonderful donation of $5,059.80 delivered to EKFH by the residents, managers and owners of the Eagles Nest RV Resort in Moyie. The gift will officially light the 1st star of the 2013 campaign. Joan Poweska, Larry Warren and Betty Shannon representatives from the resort were thrilled to hear the news and were equally as excited to share how the gift of caring for community came to be. “The Eagles Nest RV Resort is in itself its own community. Over the past summer we have friends in our community who have had their share of health challenges specifically

with a cancer focus. So as a group we decided to donate some of the funds from the many resort events and activities to support the regional hospital’s oncology unit. We never could have dreamed how successful this endeavour would be,” explains Poweska. EKFH hopes that the lighting of the 1st star will encourage others to invest in the current and future health care needs of their community. When the stars shine brightly you help light a path for others. Every dollar and every star counts. Donate online at www.ekfh.ca, make a gift at your local hospital or health care facility earmarked for the Starlite Campaign or send some holiday cheer to East Kootenay Foundation for Health, 13 24th Ave N, Cranbrook, BC V1C 3H9. EKFH is a leader in publically supported health care fundraising, practicing responsible allocation of funds that ensures your donation is going where it is needed most.

Home Improvement and Renovations Keeping up with trends in the kitchen Are you thinking about renovating your kitchen? Would you like to have up-to-theminute furniture in surroundings that are both contemporary and stunning? If so, take note that European trends are the flavour of the day — think uncluttered kitchens, clean lines, and dynamic colours. Give me colour! Two-toned furniture is turning heads these days. The trend is towards cabinets that marry white with another colour. For example, white can be accompanied by a naturally polished wood such as walnut or cherry. But an explosion of colour is also possible; two-toned cupboards mixing white doors with emerald green, or firetruck red, or cobalt blue cabinets creates an eye-catching effect. Avoid an overly flashy result by limiting the bright colour to only one section of cabinets. Prized materials Many different types of materials are popular these days, so there is freedom to choose what meets your needs, budget, and tastes. • For worktops: quartz, black granite, marble, stainless steel, wood, and even concrete. • For cupboards: veneer, hardwood, laminate, thermoplastic, and lacquered glass. • For floors: hardwood, white painted wood, and ceramic. • For appliances: stainless steel is the enduring trend. modern faucets Single-handle faucets are all the rage. Apart from taps in a stainless steel or chrome finish, you could also treat yourself to red, black, or white ones. If you love gadgets, choose a model with a warning light to indicate the temperature of the water (blue when the water is cold and red when it’s hot). Professional style faucets with a flexible spout, which imitate the models used in restaurant kitchens, are still very popular. lots of sPace You’re sure to want a big and useful island in your new kitchen. It
can be equipped with a sink or even a cooking surface. Think about the practical aspects of the room; extend the cabinets up to the ceiling to increase storage space. Don’t dismiss the possibility of replacing some of the doors under the worktop or in the pantry with drawers, as they are so much more practical. Other gadgets can also make your life easier, such as sliding shelves and hidden recycling bins. easy access shelvinG Shelves are definitely in. They’re perfect for keeping frequently used kitchen articles close at hand, but before installing any, ask yourself if you’ll use them appropriately. You don’t want your shelves to become overcrowded or a collecting place for junk. If you’re a disorganized type of person, shelves installed underneath a worktop have the advantage of keeping your mess hidden from sight. Lastly, if the idea of planning a new kitchen stresses you out, don’t hesitate to consult a
kitchen designer. This professional will be able to guide you in making the right choices and

Regular maintenance costs are easily figured but some cars can be very expensive if parts have to be brought in from around the world. Once you have a handle on the above, you can narrow your choice. It is important you like the looks of the second most expensive purchase of your life. However, make sure it serves its intended purpose by answering some questions. Typically, how many people do you need to transport and how far? Is there enough stowage space in the cabin and the trunk or luggage compartment? Do you need V8 power or will an economical four-cylinder suffice? Now go and kick some tires at a variety of dealerships and consider multiple brands because they all have much to offer.

The Canadian choice: compact cars and compact SUVs small SUV is based on the same Alfa Romeo platform used in the Dodge Dart. It is smooth and quiet and a pleasure to drive. The Cherokee is also the first vehicle in the world to be equipped with a 9-speed automatic transmission. The base engine is a 2.4L 4-cylinder with 184hp or the optional 3.2L V6 with 271hp, for just $1,300 more, offer-

ing good value. Not to worry Jeep fans, this new Cherokee is available with three AWD systems. 2014 Nissan Rogue You might notice a trend with my 2014 model choices are all compact cars or compact SUVs. This is the direction Canadians are heading when it comes to buying a new vehicle. With this in mind Nissan
has an all-new Rogue compact SUV with enough room inside for three rows of seats and room for 7-passengers. This is practical for people who require extra capacity but don’t want to buy a bigger or more expensive midsized or larger SUV. Under the hood is a 2.5L 4-cylinder used in other Nissan products and is matched to a new con-
tinually variable transmission featuring more available ratios and reduced friction. The interior is very well executed, with a dash that looks similar to the bigger Pathfinder. Goes on sale just before Christmas. zack.spencer@drivewaybc. ca
2014 Mazda3
’’
Zack Spencer
So many cars to choose from, so few words available in this tight space! Yes, I know that’s the complaint of every writer but we truly do have a lot of choice today. And the quality of vehicles is so much higher than it ever was so there is much to celebrate. In the run-up to 2014, I will be testing a lot of what’s new and improved. Today, I’ll just offer you five models to consider adding to your shopping list. 2014 Mazda3 The compact car segment in Canada is the biggest by far, with over 20 percent of all vehicles sold. So, the introduction of the Mazda3 is important because it is currently the fourth best seller in this class. The outgoing car was already one of the best handling cars and now with a lighter and sexier looking body, this new car is both eye catching and solid on the road. The base engine is a 2.0L 4-cylinder with 155hp, thanks to direct injection. The larger 2.5L engine puts out a healthy 184hp. It is the interior buyers will care most about, and the Mazda3 is a nice surprise, due to class leading available options and a high level of finish. Starting at $15,995 and running up to $29,895, there is a Mazda3 for all budgets. 2014 Toyota Corolla Continuing with the compact car theme, the Toyota Corolla is the third best selling car in Canada but Toyota believes this new model can take the overall sales crown away from the Honda Civic. This new 2014 model is made, and partly designed, right here in Canada with our needs in mind. The Corolla now has a longer wheelbase for amazing interior space, especially in the back seat. The dash is wide and flat for ample room and covered in nice looking and feeling materials, plus there is an available centre screen to use for the radio and backup camera. Powering the 2014 Corolla is the same 132hp 1.8L engine from the last model, with one exception. The LE Eco model has a modified valve system to improve fuel economy and

2014 Nissan Rogue pump the power to 140hp. The biggest change is the introduction of a continuously variable transmission for a greater range of gears, improved economy, and a smooth drive. 2014 Volkswagen Golf This new Golf will be made in Mexico along side the Beetle and Jetta sedan and will go on sale in the spring of 2014. It is wider and longer than the last Golf but also significantly lighter and safer. The base engine will be a new turbocharged 1.8L
engine with 170hp but don’t worry the TDI diesel is carried over. The sportier GTI trim is fantastic, with an estimated 225hp, in the Canadian Model, thanks to a new 2.0L turbo engine. The interior materials used inside are almost Audi quality. No price yet but building these new cars inside the NAFTA zone will save money and that will be reflected in the price. 2014 Jeep Cherokee The Cherokee is back and it looks nothing like the boxy truck of old. A vehicle doesn’t have to be exorbitantly expensive, have mega horsepower or a fancy Italian badge on it to be fun to drive. In fact, a lot of people seem to agree with that statement too since there are a few pocket rockets available on the market that might not compete for the top power specs, but can certainly get the party started. Yes, it’s a subcompact but it doesn’t feel like it when you’re working through the gears of the 6-speed manual transmission. Ford’s newest

despite angularly-shaped vehicles becoming a trend of the past. Why? Because it has personality. Describing it
in one word, I’d say it’s funky. And now, the all-new soul is built on a bigger platform, increasing legroom up front
and in the rear. It’s also quieter on the road when revving its 1.6L, 4-cylinder engine. There’s also a 2.0L 4-cylinder
available with 164 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

of technological gadgetry that makes staying “connected” behind the wheel more user friendly. Of course, without trying to take away focus from the act of driving. Among its tweaked features, you’ll find brand new interior and exterior styling along with the implementation of their high compression ratio engines, better known as SKYACTIV. Two engines and transmissions are offered. There’s the 2.0L, 4-cylinder SKYACTIV engine with a 6-speed manual transmission or an available 6-speed automatic transmission- available on either the base GX or midgrade GS models. It produces 155 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque. Then there’s a 2.5L, 4-cylinder SKYACTIV engine for the GT trim, which only comes with a 6-speed automatic. It generates a healthy 184 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque. Either is a treat to drive with excellent urban or extra urban characteristics. 2014 Fiat 500L- starts at $19,995 For Fiat fans, if the 500 was too small, here’s your answer: the 500L. The longer wheelbase cutie is more practical than the pint-sized version and has more room. And two more doors! Powering it is a 1.4L, 4-cylinder, MultiAir turbo engine that pumps out 160 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Since it’s a bigger car, it feels bigger to drive. But visibility isn’t compromised and there are a couple of great gearboxes to choose from: a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed Euro Twin Clutch automatic transmission. Toyota Corolla- starts at $15,995 No, you’re not reading that wrong. I did include the 2014 Toyota Corolla on my list. Yes, it’s like automotive bread and butter; you always know you’re getting and it’s very predictable. But with a complete overhaul for 2014, you could say the Japanese manufacturer has added some jam on top to make it sweeter. New styling on the inside and out makes it more de-
sirable to the eyes. It’s still not as exciting as most of its competitors but the 1.8L, 4-cyinder does a bang up job of delivering 132 horsepower and 128 lb-ft of torque. The cabin is quiet and I’ll hand it
Toyota for matching it with a CVT transmission that is just fabulous. Kia Soul- starts at $16,995 Kia’s box-mobile continues to deliver strong sales

Can the 2014 ‘‘Toyota Tundra
compete with the big boys? – This is the year to see.
Ian Harwood
’’
BC is truck country and there is a multitude of products to pick from whether you are weekend oddjobber or need something to haul your tools to the job site. Oh, yes, and many folks just like trucks! – As somebody who has spent his life around trucks you won’t get any argument from me on that count. In the coming months, in my role as truck writer for Driveway, I will be testing most of what is available in your local dealerships and telling you about the pros and cons of each. I’ll also be telling you about the latest accessories and we’ll maybe do a little off-roading together. Today, I’ve just picked five trucks to give you some place to start your search for the truck that will suit you best in 2014. The 2014 GMC/Chevy Silverado/Sierra ½ ton pickup has gone through some monumental changes this year. What an improvement over last year with a very comfortable and refined interior on all trim levels, and three engine choices, the Eco Tec 4.3L V6, 5.3l v8, and the 6.2l V8. With so many changes and enhancements to this vehicle you will really have to wait for my full review on this vehicle in the coming weeks to get the complete picture. 2014 Ford F150 Ecoboost. With more than 100,000 Eco Boost engines produced monthly, you can bet a majority of these engines are finding their way into the 2014 F150 pickup. This truck holds the record in Canada for highest pickup sales, and at 12.9/9.0 L/100 km (city/highway) it keeps the money in your wallet a little longer. 2014 RAM 1500 EcoDiesel. This is a muchanticipated truck from RAM and is one I am anxious to see. With a 3.0 L V6 Diesel engine with a torqueflite eight speed transmission. Not only will it give you 420 pound feet of torque and plenty of towing capabilities, it will also reduce co2 emissions and run on B20 Biodiesel. It’s a game changer. 2014 Toyota Tundra. New body style this year, impressive hood and fender design. Toyota has also included a Western themed truck called 1794 Edition, which happens to be the founding year of a Texas ranch where the Tundra plant is now situated. This truck’s interior is covered with Saddle tan brown leather seats and rich maple wood grain panels throughout. The Tun-

dra is powered by a 4.6 Litre or a 5.7 Litre engine. Can it compete with the big boys? – This is the year to see. 2014 RAM ProMaster. After a long run with the Dodge full-size RAM van there was a void in the marketplace for a spacious cargo van, a void that was quickly gobbled up by Mercedes Sprinter, and the Nissan NV. Based on the Fiat Ducato, this van has some RAM branding of its own and is available in a wide range of wheelbase options and two roof heights.

Trucks that tempt you to scream ‘yee-hi!’ Engine choices will be the Penastar 3.6 Litre V6 or the turbocharged 3.0 litre EcoDiesel four cylinder engine. There is plenty of excitement around this vehicle. If you want to talk trucks or chat about what might make your truck ‘purty’, please drop me a line. I would also like to see pictures of what you have done to your truck in the way of customization. ian.harwood@drivewaybc. ca 2014 GMC/Chevy Silverado/Sierra

On October 12, 2013 the Kootenay Aboriginal Business Development Agency announced the winners of the Kootenay Aboriginal Business Awards. Chris Marsh of Kootenay Country Carving and Tatters Ink Airbrush Tattoos was awarded Best Exhibitor at the Trade Show sponsored by Invermere Kootenay Savings Credit Union. Chris March, artist owner operator of Kootenay Country Carving and Tatters Ink Airbrush Tattoos, Chris is Blackfeet and lives in the Kootenay region with her four children. She has been in the region for over 40 years living in Skookumchuk, BC Chris is a carver with many talents. Her passion is wood carving of native faces. She has been carving for 20 years and has never thought of doing anything else. She also does soap stone carvings. She refers to the soap stone as nature’s canvass. Chris is very soft spoken and definitely shows in her art work when it comes to her carving with Emu egg shells. The emu egg shell has three layers that are of different colours, some eggs surprise her with a fourth layer. At first glance you think the eggs are painted, but they are in fact carved to expose the different coloured layers. Chris has been doing this type of carving for 15 years. She is happy to say that her art work has also gone international. Chris has recently added airbrushing to her home based business. Airbrushing is an expression of art as she creates her own designs and makes her own stencils. In recent years her airbrushing business traveled to many local events in the region including Baynes Lake, Cranbrook, Trail, Montrose, Fairmont. She has also done some graduation ceremonies for those who want the flare of airbrushing. Her art work is available through the winter months and airbrushing available in the summer months. chrismarsh34@yahoo.ca www.tattersink.com
