Lake Country council turned down a proposal for a new gravel pit near Oyama last week but it’s likely the issue will come before council again and, according to the applicant who was turned down, the issue of gravel trucks going through the community of Oyama is far from over. Fred Thiessen of Interior Gravel Products called Lake Country’s decision to turn down his application to mine a piece of property next to the new Highway 97 short-sighted and says the issue isn’t going away.
“If this pit closes the next nearest pit is Pier Mac on the other side of Kalamalka Lake,” said Thiessen after council denied his request to open a new pit called the Witzke pit in Oyama. “There will be 4,000 to 5,000 truckloads directly traveling downtown through Oyama, through school zones. That’s where those trucks will go. Is that a better alternative to me being directly on the highway?” Lake Country council was unanimous in voting against another gravel pit in Oyama. Thiessen had applied for the permit and would have also
had to receive approval from the Agriculture Land Commission and the provincial Ministry of Mines to get the go ahead. He says the two pits that he currently leases are coming to the end of their life and he already hasn’t been able to bid jobs due to the fact his supply is running out. But councillors weren’t convinced it was the right move for the district and questioned the lack of reclamation on several pits in Lake Country. “We have five gravel pits in the area,” said Coun. Rob Geier. “We have some to the north
are going to be reclaimed but residents are not seeing that. We just see scars and they get bigger and bigger. I don’t see the economic need personally for more gravel with all the pits that are out there.” Mining consultant Eric Beresford told council there are four pits in the area that are all within the final year of operation and reclamation work is then done. Gravel pit operators have to put up bonds with the Ministry of Energy and Mines as a way to ensure

Exchange your own art for ‘event bucks’ to bid in the auction The Lake Country Art Gallery is hosting its third annual Deck the Walls Art Exchange and Auction on Nov. 30 giving folks the opportunity to bid on pieces of art in a unique public event to be held at the Aspen Grove Golf Club in Lake Country. It’s an auction with a twist that has been held for the past two years and was an exciting and successful event for the Lake Country Art Gallery. Each of the past two years the gallery has auctioned more than 100 pieces of art. Featuring live and silent auction items, and managed by a professional auctioneer, this evening is filled with excitement. Unlike most auctions, Deck the Walls offers a unique twist; instead of attendees arriving armed with their own cash, buyers will have the opportunity to submit works from their own collection in exchange for event bucks to increase their purchasing power. Two weeks before the event starts, on Nov. 22 and 24 between noon and 3 p.m., anyone can

By the end of the night, I walked away with three lovely pieces.” Brennan says Deck the Walls is a rare opportunity to exchange art from your own collection that may need to be refreshed, and in return get a new piece of art. This is a chance to make a space on your walls for a new piece that you really love. It is practical, economical, and above all a fun and energetic event for the entire community. Lake Country Art Gallery’s third annual Deck the Walls Art Exchange and Auction is Nov. 30 starting at 6 p.m. at Aspen Grove Golf Club. All proceeds go to the artists and to support the Lake Country Art Gallery. Shop locally this Christmas Photos with Santa Paws for local causes
The Lake Country Chamber of Commerce is kicking off a Christmas in Lake Country campaign, urging residents and businesses to do their holiday shopping in Lake Country. The Christmas in Lake Country retail campaign is designed to encourage local residents to shop in Lake Country for their Christmas
gifts and goodies by providing them a chance to win a mid-winter Lake Country shopping spree. The value of the shopping spree will be determined by the number of participating merchants, but the chamber anticipates that it will be between $700 to $1,000. Entry forms must be completed by the shopper from Nov. 16
through to Dec. 26. The lucky winner will plan their shopping spree with chamber staff and will be chauffeured to the participating businesses on a date of their choosing between the third Monday in January and the third Thursday in February. More information will be released in December.
Winfield’s Tri-Lake Animal Hospital is hosting its second annual Santa Paws fundraiser: A chance to get your pet’s photo taken with Santa to celebrate the season and give to a needy cause. After a successful inaugural meeting with Lake Country pets, Santa Paws will be stopping at Tri-Lake Ani-

Koch: Interesting topic for council to consider GRAVEL PIT FROM A1 reclamation is done. However council wasn’t convinced and denied the request for another pit. “While you say the reclamation is going to happen I know as a councillor I’m not prepared to say yes to another gravel pit until I see that reclamation,” said Coun. Penny Gambell. “I haven’t seen it and we can make prom-
ises until the cows come home. But I can’t see that this is a good thing.” A recent study commissioned by the Central Okanagan Regional District outlined the gravel mining industry as important in the future economy of the Central Okanagan and also pointed to Lake Country as an area where many gravel deposits exist. It means the issue likely won’t die with one proposal being turned down.
Mark Koch Lake Country planner Mark Koch, whose staff did not recommend the
latest pit application, said it’s an interesting topic for council to consider. “The regional district concluded that gravel is a critical resource for the regional economy,” he said. “You have to weigh the importance of the resource with the community impact.” In this latest case, council felt the community impact outweighed the economic benefits. newsroom@lakecountrynews.net

Untangling the oil pipeline politics
R
eaction was swift and scattered after the “framework agreement” on new oil pipelines announced last week by B.C. Premier Christy Clark and Alberta Premier Alison Redford. First, here’s what it doesn’t mean. “B.C. blinked,” according to one Toronto commentator, based on the popular notion that B.C. gave up its claim to a share of Alberta’s resource royalties from heavy oil. Clark never made such a claim, so it would be difficult to give it up. Her often-repeated condition of a “fair share” of revenues from any new oil pipelines is purposely vague, but after repeated protests from Alberta, Clark clarified as far back as last June that provincial royalties are not on the table. There is no constitutional way to make such a demand, a point Redford has made several times. NDP leader Adrian
BC Views
Tom Fletcher Dix and the usual chorus of professional protesters claimed that Clark flip-flopped, opposing the Enbridge Northern Gateway proposal before the election and then embracing it once she was re-elected. This is also inaccurate. Clark’s five conditions were set out before the May election, demanding approval by a federal environmental review, “world-leading” spill prevention and response capability on land and at sea, meeting legal requirements to consult and share benefits with aboriginal communities,
and the undefined “fair share” for B.C. Clark said numerous times during the campaign that the conditions have not been met, and made pessimistic noises about Northern Gateway, but she very carefully did not campaign against it. The B.C. Liberal platform also endorsed a Kitimat-area oil refinery proposed by this newspaper’s owner, and Clark repeatedly referred to that sort of industrial expansion as one of the potential “fair share” components for B.C. The B.C. Liberal government made its opposition to Northern Gateway “as currently proposed” official on May 31, two weeks after the election, in its final submission to the federal review panel. If Clark had wanted to jump on the anti-pipeline bandwagon for political gain, that move could have been made earlier. NDP environment critic Spencer Chandra Herbert said the B.C.
government has taken the position that more oil will reach the West Coast, by rail if not by pipeline. I’m not sure if or when that claim was made, but it’s true that rail shipments are already permitted. Here’s what Redford and Clark agreed on. Redford accepts B.C.’s five conditions, provincial royalties excluded, and Clark endorsed Redford’s proposed “Canadian Energy Strategy,” which B.C. rejected last year. A draft of the strategy released last summer contains no specifics on how it would facilitate a pipeline project from Alberta to B.C. It talks about developing Canada’s energy reserves and at the same time somehow reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and promises a final version next spring. Oh, and Quebec refuses to participate. Ottawa has sole jurisdiction over inter-provincial projects such as
Northern Gateway and the proposal by Kinder Morgan Canada to expand the 60-year-old Trans Mountain pipeline to Burnaby and refineries in Washington. If there is to be some extra revenue for B.C. from oil traffic, it could theoretically take the form of a toll on pipelines. Redford pointed out the problem with that idea in her speech to an energy forum in Vancouver last week. She noted that 42 per cent of B.C. natural gas is piped through Alberta to markets. If B.C. can toll Alberta oil, the same could be done with B.C. gas. None of B.C.’s five conditions has yet been met. Legally, they don’t have to be, except for the one about accommodating aboriginal title. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press. divine edict. Innovation is always possible. Our daughter has an intuitive understanding of what each spice does. “This casserole could use a pinch of paprika,” she’ll say. She’s usually right. But outside of the kitchen, we resort too often to those one-sizefits-all (OSFA) answers. Anything related to economics relies on perpetual growth. Anything else implies failure. In politics, the Holy Grail is a majority that can ride roughshod over the self-interests of minorities. In scientific circles, research must produce tangible results. Preferably, commercially marketable results. But sometimes it’s just as important to prove that something doesn’t work. 5 Massive doses of vitamin C, or vitamin D, or probiotic yogurt, attempt to impose an OSFA treatment on vastly different diseases. Religion has its own OSFAs. The solution to everything, from physical abuse to substance addiction to embezzlement, is to turn your life over to Jesus. Or Krishna. Or whoever. Various branches of Christianity established their own narrow gates. You need the right kind of conversion experience, or of baptism. You must accept the authority of a particular person or creed or confession. You should speak with the right kind of tongues, or use the right theological terminology. Bumper stickers that proclaim “Christ is the answer” make me wonder, “What was the question?” Life is far more complicated than a cooking recipe. We wouldn’t use the same recipe for squash soup as we would for Chateaubriand, or the same spices for a Bengal curry as for an alfredo sauce. So why the appeal of a simplistic solution for everything? I suspect it means that most of us are about as ignorant about ethics as I

THE PERFECT SCENARIO WOULD BE A MULTI-MODAL PEDESTRIAN/ CYCLING-FRIENDLY CORRIDOR AS WELL AS AN ACTIVE RAIL LINE.
Rail lines are an important transportation option for moving goods and services in the Okanagan in a cost effective way. Without the rail option, more and more transportation gets pushed on to our already well-used highways. Tolko now has no choice but to haul loads of lumber along the Coquihalla. Increasing truck traffic is hard on our road infrastructure and greater FREE
congestion poses higher safety and environmental risks. I am also very concerned about the loss of good paying jobs which could disappear with the demise of the rail line. As well, any potential em-
ployers considering setting up business might be less inclined if they cannot reply on alternative modes of transportation to get their products moving. SEE CANNAN A6

CANNAN FROM A5
The good news is that everyone is talking and we remain optimistic that there is still a chance the Kelowna to Vernon rail corridor can be preserved. Residents have also contacted me and presented a few alternatives should the rail line be abandoned: Some see a commuter transportation system operating between the two cities with stops at UBCO and other locales. Others see the creation of a spectacular Okanagan recreational corridor and opportunities for local tourism and healthy living. I know Brad Clements, from Vernon, is working on this and has set up a website at www.okanaganrailtrail.com. The perfect scenario would be a multimodal pedestrian/cycling-friendly corridor as well as an active rail line. For that to happen, the community will need to “buy in” to the proposal, much like the “buy a metre” campaign that was run by the Mission Creek Greenway community, where citizens and local businesses could “buy a tie” of the rail line. It would be an opportunity for everyone from Kelowna to Vernon to get involved in a meaningful way. Our long and romantic history with the railroad and the rail lines that connect us still sparks people’s passions. The Kelowna-Vernon line served us well for nearly 80 years and we have an opportunity to make sure it continues to do so. It will take a concerted effort by municipalities, business, and citizens, the region, the province and your elected officials to see it to a satisfactory end. Information on local announcements and federal government programs can be found at www.cannan.ca. Ron Cannan is the Member of Parliament for Kelowna-Lake Country.

he little goblins, ghouls and witches have had their night of searching for sweets, the lakes are quiet of boat traffic, and there’s now a dusting of snow on the hills. It’s time to face the fact that the sunny, warm days of summer are over. It’s time to pack up the shorts and pull out the wool socks and long johns. For many Lake Country residents, it’s also time to stoke the wood stove or fireplace to heat the home. The process of chopping wood may be a chore to some, but it also can be a great exercise that gets your muscles working hard, and your heart rate elevated.

Keeping You Fit During the course of lifting up the axe or maul, and controlling its path down to split wood, many muscle groups are recruited of the arms, back, legs and abdominals—it’s a whole body exercise. The activity involves both concentric and eccentric actions—the muscles being worked both shorten and lengthen, depending on the phase of the swing. It also can be compared to interval training: chop the wood, haul

avoiding wood with nails or many knots, and only doing the task if it is safe for you. • Pains can commonly be felt in the lower back during and after the process of splitting and picking up wood. Raising the wood you are splitting will help ease the strain on your low back which occurs with repetitive bending. A 1416-inch splitting block is an ideal height to decrease strain while keeping the wood within a zone where the axe or maul will exert a strong force; sometimes referred to as being in the “power zone.” • Keep your knees bent and your back in as neutral (slightly curved) position as possible—both while doing the swinging and while picking up the chopped pieces. • Another consideration for your back is the direction that the

it to where it’ll be stored, pile it in an organized way, and then do it again: chop, haul, pile. Added benefits include: Being out in the fresh air, the potential of stress-relief, and also importantly, this kind of activity goes very well with a ‘Movember’ moustache. Being a multi-joint interval exercise, the activity requires a whole body warm up (perhaps a hike to find the wood to be chopped) before, and a cool down that includes stretching after. Doing so, and following the tips below, can help reduce the chances of delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and the risk of injury. I will focus on prevention of common pains that can be sustained from overuse, but remember to take necessary precautions to avoid any traumatic injuries; for example, wearing safety glasses and gloves,
Dear Friend; John 15:14’ 14:15 How are you? I just had to send you this letter to tell you how much I love you and Care about you. I saw you yesterday as you were talking with your friends. I Waited all day, hoping you would talk to me also. As evening drew near, I gave, a sunset and a cool breeze to close your day... and I waited, but you never talked to me. It hurt me, but I still love you. I saw you fall asleep last light hoping you would talk with me, so I spilled moonlight upon your face and pillow. Again I waited, wanting to help you... but you never called. You awakened late this morning, and rushed for the day... no time for me again. My tears were in the rain. Today you looked sad and alone. Your friends let you down and hurt you many times, so I understand how you feel. I know how hard life is on earth... I really know because I see everything! Remember? And I want to help you. Just call me! Ask me! Talk to me! My ear is always open for a friend, and you are my friend. I have so many gifts to give to you; peace on a day of care and turmoil; guidance on a day of confusion and hard decisions; strength on a day of wickedness and helplessness... just to name a few. I love you and want to help you. I try to tell you this in the quiet green pasture of My scriptures! I whisper it in the quiet of your ear, hear! I breathe it into your Soul! I shout it from the heavens! Just call me! Ask me! Talk to me! It’s a Privilege you have as my friend... I will listen. I am the “Hearer of Prayer”!! Psalm 65:2, 145:18; Luke 11:13; James 4:8a Your friend, Jehovah Exodus 6:3; Isaiah 12:2; 26:4; Psalm 83:18 Authorized King James Version, Family Edition, Windsor. ax travels. Many people swing from one side and down toward the other, typically only in one preferred direction. This causes twisting in the spine and uneven use of muscle groups in the upper body between right and left sides. By keeping the axe centred, you will limit the rotational forces and will also get more symmetric recruitment of abdominal muscles. Imagine always chopping down diagonally in one direction as being similar to doing bicycle crunches only to one side. Forearm pain is another common symptom due to the use of the finger flexors with gripping and the wrist extensors. Use of these muscles can result in tendonitis in the wrist or the elbow, especially if they are used a lot already with your job or hobbies. Stretch each side of your forearms after your task is done to reduce the pain. To stretch the top of your forearm (the extensors) hold your arm out so that your palm faces down. Use your other hand to bend your wrist so that it’s as though you’re bringing your palm to the underside of your forearm. Bend it far enough to feel a pulling sensation in the muscles, but not pain, and hold it gently for 30 seconds before releasing. To stretch the flexors, start again with your arm held out, but this time pull up on the fingers and wrist the opposite direction. If you do experience muscle soreness that doesn’t resolve a couple days post-activity, or if you get sharp, acute pain, seek a health professional for advice, such as your doctor or physiotherapist. As the days grow colder and you don your flannel plaids to go outdoors, don’t think of wood splitting as a chore. Instead, consider it a whole body exercise that can build a strong core, arms and legs when performed safely. Tess Mihell is a registered physiotherapist with Sun City Physiotherapy in Winfield.

Babysitting courses before the holidays
Getting ready for winter roads
The Kelowna & District Safety Council has fall Babysitter Training Courses that will help prepare pre-teens for a safe holiday season full of babysitting. KDSC runs the largest and most popular babysitter training in the Okanagan, and if the fall dates don’t work for you, the entire 2014 schedule is already online and available for registration. Kelowna course dates are Nov. 16 & 23, Nov. 30 & Dec. 7, and Dec. 14 & 21, and will take place at the Kelowna & District Safety Council (395 Hartman Road). Training days run 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a one hour supervised lunch break, and are open to children ages 10 and up. Graduates of these two-day courses will receive a Babysitter’s Tote Bag, a comprehensive student manual, a certificate, and a wallet card. “This is the most comprehensive Babysitter Training Course that

parents will find, and the only one that offers certification” says Tania Meyer, executive director of KDSC. “It’s a two day course, with 10 hours of training and includes topics such as the rights and responsibilities of the employer, the child, and the babysitter and the developmental and behavioural characteristics of children of different ages.” Basic child care, nutrition, injury prevention, emergencies, age-appropriate play and basic first aid procedures will also be covered. A special component of the course will prepare babysitters for handling the special needs of children who are visually impaired, hearing impaired, physically disabled, speech impaired, and mentally challenged. The course is $65 by phone 250-765-3163, or register online and save $5 by visiting www.kdsc. bc.ca.
Some “all season” tires are good enough for winter roads in B.C., but not all of them. That’s one reason why Transportation Minister Todd Stone has added the topic of tires to a provincial review of highway safety that includes speed limits. “It’s been almost 40 years since the current definition of a winter tire was actually changed, and tire technology has advanced dramatically, particularly over the last five to 10 years,” Stone said Tuesday. With the popularity of all-season tires and all-wheel-drive vehicles, Stone said there is some confusion about what is acceptable for requirements that took effect Oct. 1 on routes that have winter conditions. Those routes have signs advising drivers to use winter tires or carry chains, and police may turn drivers away if they are not properly
equipped. True winter tires have a symbol of a mountain and snowflake on the sidewall. All-season tires with the “M+S” mark to indicate traction in mud and snow are also permissible, but all tires must have a minimum tread depth of 3.5 mm. A quick test can be done using a dime. Point Her Majesty’s head downward and insert the dime in the tire tread.
If the top of her head remains visible, the tire is too worn to qualify for winter conditions. Drivers have a choice of investing in new tires or buying a set of chains. The transportation ministry has a website at www.th.gov.bc.ca/ SeasonalDriving/winter_chains.html that includes maps of routes affected by winter restrictions, and tips on how to use tire chains. Stone
said that with 60 per cent of B.C. residents living where winter conditions

My dog has started to slow down over the last few months. Is this just part of normal aging?
Private licenced assisted living home in beautiful Lake Country
As dogs age, we generally see changes in their behavior. The playful ball-chasing and constant running around that we associate with puppies gives way to adult dogs napping in the sun and lounging during evening TV time. With senior dogs, we accept even more slowing down. However, it is important to remember, however, that old age is not a disease. We need to differentiate between normal behavior changes of aging dogs and abnormal behaviors that can be important signals of pain. Unfortunately, detecting pain in our canine companions isn’t always straightforward. Some visibly obvious behaviors are important signals that a dog may be in pain. These include: avoiding slippery floor surfaces, difficulty getting up from a down position, difficulty lying down or getting comfortable, limping/ lameness, lying down while eating or drinking, reluctance or inability to get up onto furniture or a bed, reluctance to go up or down stairs, reluctance to sit when asked, reluctance to turn the head to one side or the other, sitting on one hip or the other with the rear legs off to one side. Any of these behaviors should prompt a visit to the veterinarian so he or she can find the cause of the pain and start to treat it.

REALTOR®
Do all Realtors work the same?
No, all realtors work differently, deal with clients differently and offer different strengths to their clients. My suggestion to people who are looking for a Realtor is to always interview at least three different Realtors. When listing your home, and when purchasing, you will have certain expectations and needs and will want to find someone with whom you feel comfortable and whom you can trust. When deciding on a Realtor, it is important to ask questions that will give you insight into their working style, people skills and work methodologies. If you ask a question like, “What sold the last three properties you listed?” the listing Realtor should be able to explain how they have sold houses in the past and how those experiences can benefit your sale. Another question that might give you insight into a Realtor’s work style would be; “Given our family’s situation, what advice can you offer us?” Advice on location, school accessibility for your children and privacy are issues that your Realtor will need to understand to help your family make the best decision. For more information on interviewing a Realtor, and for some questions that you can use, please contact me at 250-826-5660 or petrina@royallepage.ca.

Dentists
My kids brought home tonnes of candy on Halloween... what steps do you recommend to keep cavities away and protect their smiles?
To keep cavities away and protect your child’s smile this Halloween, as per the Canadian Dental Association (CDA), we recommend taking these simple steps: Limit the number of times a day your child eats sugary treats or snacks between meals. Serve snacks that will not harm your child’s teeth, such as vegetables, cheese, nuts or seeds. It is best to eat sugary treats at the end of mealtime while there is still plenty of saliva in the mouth. Saliva helps to wash away the sugars and acids. Drinking a glass of water after eating a sugary treat will also help wash away some of the sugars and acids. Avoid soft, sticky treats that get stuck between teeth. Always have your child brush and floss before going to bed. Halloween candy can be a nightmare for someone who wears braces, but it doesn’t have to be. Trick-or-treaters who wear braces should avoid nuts, popcorn, tortilla chips, hard candy, caramel and other chewy candies to keep their braces safe and intact. However, there are plenty of other things that trick-or-treaters who wear braces can enjoy, like chocolate! And last but not least, make sure your kids have regular visits at the dental office at least twice a year so that the dentists can do thorough exams and any necessary xrays to detect cavities early!
Dr. Karla Reimer Optometrist
Q A
I was just diagnosed with diabetes. Why did my doctor tell me to have my eyes checked?
Diabetes can affect every part of your body, including the eye, causing fluctuating, blurred or double vision, loss of peripheral vision, and flashes or floaters within the eye. The most serious eye problem associated with diabetes is diabetic retinopathy. This occurs when there is a weakening of the tiny blood vessels in the lining of the eye, resulting in blood leakage. If left untreated, blindness can result. Early detection is crucial, as treatment is more likely to be successful at an early stage. How do you prevent this? 1. If you are diagnosed with diabetes, see your optometrist for a thorough eye examination. 2. Even if you are healthy and have good vision, see your optometrist for regular eye examinations. Sometimes diabetes is first detected by your optometrist as a result of your visual symptoms.

WHL commissioner listens to ticket holders Hockey benefits beyond the ice Western Hockey League Commissioner Ron Robison fielded dozens of questions on a wide variety of topics at an open meeting with Rockets season ticket holders on last Thursday, Nov. 7, at Manhattan Point Restaurant in Kelowna, touching on topics like officials, attendance, WHL Live and player safety. In the first ever public Q and A commissioner Robison has held, Rockets fans had the chance to ask what they wanted. They queried Robison about many topics that the WHL is already
talking about itself. “I think it was an excellent opportunity to exchange some opinions and views on various aspects of the league and it was very clear that the season ticket holders in attendance were very knowledgeable about the WHL,” said Robison. “We hope it was informative for the season ticket holders that attended and there were many good points raised which we will take into consideration at the league level.” Robison said attendance is generally down amongst the league,
mainly due to the aging population and stressed the need to reach out to younger audiences. On player safety, he said the WHL’s seven-point plan to reduce injuries, including concussions, was working, with concussions down last year and at the start of this year. In terms of the league’s web casts there is good news for fans as Robison said they are currently installing technology that will allow fans to listen to either the home or away broadcasts on WHL Live, something fans have been ask-
ing for. The commissioner said the technology should be in place by Christmas of this year. Overall, Robison said it was a great night and hinted that the league may do similar open meetings in other WHL markets, reaching out and interacting with its fans. “I thought it was excellent,” he said. “I thought the questions were very good and I think it’s beneficial for the season ticket holders and at the same time very important for us to listen to what their concerns are.”
Former Kelowna Rockets players are finding success in post-secondary classrooms across Canada as part of the Western Hockey League’s scholarship program. WHL Commissioner Ron Robison said 305 WHL graduate players were awarded WHL scholarships for the 2013-14 academic year with 10 former Rockets enrolled at post-secondary institutions across the nation. Leading the way is reigning CIS Player of the Year Lucas Bloodoff, the former Rockets’ captain, who is into his

Blending Indian folk melodies with blues, a sprinkle of gospel and compelling grooves, Manx’s “mysticssippi” flavor is hard to resist, easy to digest and what keeps audiences coming back for more.

Western Hockey League has awarded more than 4,900 scholarships to graduate players, representing a contribution of more than $15.4 million. The WHL Scholarship is considered to be the most attractive and flexible hockey scholarship due to the fact it is a fully guaranteed academic scholarship with no requirement to play university hockey to qualify, and the student athlete can apply the funding to any post-secondary program of his choice. This year, 169 of the 305 WHL Scholarship recipients are playing elite hockey in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Association. For every season a player plays in the WHL, they receive a full year guaranteed WHL Scholarship, including tuition, textbooks and compulsory fees, to a post-secondary institution of their choice. Administered by the WHL office, the WHL Scholarship is solely funded by the member Clubs of the WHL.This season WHL Clubs will contribute $1.9 million to graduates utilizing the WHL Scholarship.

250-861-7722 Labrador Retriever Cross Sex: Neutered Male Colour: Black Age: Young Adult ID: 308398 Dakota is a very active young dog who needs a home where he can burn off some of his energy. He would love to be your next runninghiking-camping partner. If you enjoy swimming in the summer, Dakota could also do that with you because he excels at that activity. He would benefit from some basic obedience training in order to bond with his new guardians and to develop into the super adult dog within him. He is a very smart dog who just needs the right owner to bring out the best in him. Dakota would not mind if you already had a resident dog because they could become best friends and run around the yard together. If you think you have the kind of home that Dakota needs, please ask the Kelowna SPCA for a one-on-one meeting.
