Local ciders hit farmers’ market BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

Mad Trapper and William Tell ciders made on JRD Farms in Erickson are now available at the Creston Valley Farmers’ Market. “It just sort of came to me one day,” Dave Mutch said of the idea to produce non-alcoholic ciders and sparkling ciders. “People aren’t drinking alcohol, especially in public, as they used to and this is a great alternative.” The William Tell Juice Company now offers old-fashioned sparkling apple and pear cider, as well as Mad Trapper old-fashioned apple cider. The sparkling ciders will have a special appeal for those who want nonalcoholic beverages to serve at parties and dinner. Crisp and clean apple and pear flavours will match nicely with a variety of food dishes and the bubbles will lend a celebratory air to the occasion. “It’s a nice addition to gift baskets, too,” he said. The white-print-on-black-background labels are highlighted with just a drop of colour. A red apple and green pear lend a whimsical touch to the classic design. The William Tell name “just dropped out of the sky,” Mutch said.

Facing declining volunteer numbers, Creston Valley fire departments have joined forces in a plan to ensure adequate response to local emergencies. “Recruiting efforts continue to interest new individuals but we are facing a greater loss each year of experienced members,” Creston Fire Rescue Chief Michael Moore told a Creston Valley services committee (Regional District of Central Kootenay areas A, B and C, and the Town of Creston) meeting on Nov. 7. Moore said Creston Fire Rescue and the Canyon-Lister and Wynndel-Lakeview fire departments are increasingly challenged to keep their numbers of volunteer firefighters at suitable levels. Reasons given are predominantly workrelated, he said. Some firefighters are now employed out of town, returning only on their days off, while others are relocating in search of employment. Training new firefighters typically takes three to five years, Moore said. One solution, he said, has the support of the three fire departments.

Christmas cards by artists, seniors to support TAPS BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

A collaboration involving a service club, an artist and several special needs students and seniors will help raise funds for the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors. Fabric artist and painter Eileen Gidman worked with the Prince Charles Secondary School students and seniors to help create artwork for Christmas cards in a fundraiser sponsored by the Creston Rotary Club. “As community services chair, I wanted to create a short-term project that had an intergenerational aspect to it,” said Rotarian Brenda Silkie. “I deeply believe that young and old persons spending time together offer each other something amazing. As well, I want-

ed to design a project that could raise the understanding of Rotary in this community a tiny bit, by focusing on Rotary’s commitment to literacy and youth.” Silkie recruited Gidman to work with students Jackson Goossen and Nikki Lohrer, along with several seniors who are TAPS members. The cards, designed and printed by Imagine Ink, will be sold at the Krafty Kronys fall craft sale on Saturday, and at the Creston Valley Farmers’ Market. “I am deeply indebted to Eileen Gidman, who has offered her time to oversee our art sessions,” Silkie said. “You need running shoes to lope around the table and keep six or seven people moving forward with the creation of their pictures.”

Experience

From page 1 A firefighter work experience program could be initiated to utilize graduates of firefighting training programs, giving them experience in return for making themselves available for on-call duty. Under the program, fire academy graduates would commit to nine to 12 months in the community, participating in a variety of activities to give them experience. In return, they would be provided with dormitory-type accommodation and a small stipend — possibly $200 a month — to help with student loan payments. Several communities in British Columbia have used such a program with success, Moore said. Benefits, he said, include improved fire service response in the short- and long-term, low financial impact, better rural fire protection and increased community services. “This is a great program,” Area B director John Kettle said. He added that stabilizing firefighter numbers is critical because Arrow Creek residents have recently approved a proposal to add fire protection in their area. The service will be provided by a contract with the Town of Creston. Kettle said he expects Kitchener will follow suit. “All of our firefighters have seen this presentation,” said Canyon-Lister Fire Department Chief Glenn Guthrie,. “There is a 100 per cent buy-in to the proposal.”

From page 1 He liked it because the Swiss legend “is a good story” and evokes the image of an apple. Coincidentally, Nov. 18 is reputed to be the date on which the marksman saved his life by using his crossbow to shoot an apple off the head of his son, Walter, in a single attempt in 1307. To mark the occasion, bottles of old fashioned sparkling apple and pear cider, regularly priced at $9.99, are being sold at two for $18. Mad Trapper old-fashioned apple cider, sold in 1.89- and 3.78-litre jugs, has been a hit at the farmers’ market, Mutch said. The market and Creative Fix are the only local outlets — in Nelson, the products can be found at Kootenay Co-op and Culinary Conspiracy — but orders can also be arranged by messaging Mutch on the William Tell Juice Company Facebook page. William Tell Juice Company products are made entirely from local fruit and even the labels were designed locally. And there are more products anticipated down the road. Next spring should see the release of apple and pear cider vinegar. Peach and cherry old-fashioned ciders are planned from the 2014 harvest.

Over 40 calls for RCMP, but none on Saturday BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

Creston RCMP responded to 44 calls from Nov. 4-10, a period in which no calls were received on a Saturday for the first time in memory, Chris Harland said on Tuesday. November 4 •A female seen near Highway 3 and Helen Street bearing the sign “Broke and hungry” was gone when police went to check, presumably having hitched a ride. •The male who was arrested last week after a series of car thefts and break-ins confessed to police that he had crashed another stolen car near Gray Creek. Police were then able to recover the vehicle. •An elderly Fifth Avenue South resident reported having an ongoing problem with a “dangerous” neighbor. Police are investigating. •After investigating a report from Wenger Road about a possible fraud, police concluded no crime had been committed. •Police received information that an unknown Canyon man has declared himself a Freeman on the Land. •A blue Larson 16- or 18-foot boat with Evinrude motor and EZ Loader trailer was found in the Ryan Station Road area near Yahk. Anyone with information about it can contact the RCMP. •An irate male did more than $1,000 damage by throwing himself at a parked vehicle on Cook Street. November 5 •A 1999 JDJ flat-deck utility trailer was stolen from Ashton Drive in Wynndel in the past two weeks. •Police assisted Crowsnest Pass RCMP by taking a statement in an alleged sexual assault case. •A female reported that she was the victim of financial and verbal abuse by her husband when she lived in Edmonton. •A bicycle reported stolen from the 1600 block of Cedar Street was later recovered and returned to the owner. •No injuries resulted when a black Chevrolet pickup pulled out onto Northwest Boulevard and collided with a white 1995 Dodge Spirit. •A nearby resident complained about traffic activity on Seventh Avenue South, where he says drugs are being sold. •Police investigating a complaint about loud music being played for two days on Goat River Road South were unable to find the source. November 6 •A female was ticketed after she collided with a railway service vehicle working on the tracks

on Crusher Road. She failed to make a complete stop, hit the vehicle and went into the ditch. No injuries resulted. •When police contacted a female who was reported to be driving with kids in the back seat who weren’t wearing seatbelts, she admitted to being in the wrong, saying there weren’t enough belts for the number of passengers she had. She was given a verbal warning. •When police attended a site on Highway 3 at 38th Avenue after getting a report of a vehicle in the ditch, they found two occupants. The driver had no licence and was arrested when police learned the vehicle had been reported stolen from Fort McMurray, Alta. •Later, two intoxicated males were found walking in the 3600 block of Masuch Road. A check revealed they had also been in the vehicle previously mentioned. They were arrested for being drunk in public and on outstanding warrants, then transferred to Cranbrook police cells. November 7 •Six horses reported to be loose on private property on Smith Road were recovered by their owner a short time later. •A female reported a possible theft on Aldrich Road and is applying for a peace bond against the suspect. •A female in the 2900 block of Highway 3 complained about receiving harassing phone calls from a male. •When police arrived at an accident scene 20 kilometres east of Kootenay Pass, they found a car down a bank, having slid off Highway 3 in poor road conditions. There were no injuries, but the owner-driver admitted to having no licence when she was located. •The registered owner of an Alberta vehicle reported to be speeding and tailgating on Highway 3/95 near Yahk was issued a warning. November 8 •A black Samsung Galaxy cell phone was reported stolen in a Prince Charles Secondary School classroom. •The male sender of unwanted emails to a female was warned to stop. •An elderly male driver was reported to have nearly hit three pedestrians and a retaining wall near Highway 3/21 intersection. When contacted, he said he didn’t recall any problems at that location. •Investigating a complaint about shots fired on Kootenay River Road, police found a small bush party at the old ferry landing, where firecrackers had been set off. The party was not considered a problem. November 10 •A male reported his 2006 green Ford F-150 had been stolen while he was in a pub in the 800 block of Canyon Street. He called the next day to report he had found the truck parked behind the pub. •A 40-year-old male died suddenly in the Duck Lake area, not of suspicious circumstances. •Police found no evidence that reported drug activity at a 20th Avenue residence was being conducted.

Tims donates $5,040 to CVH Tuck Shop Advance Staff

For a fourth year, Tim Hortons held a successful Smile Cookie campaign, again raising $5,040 for the Creston Valley Hospital Tuck Shop, and delivering the cheque on Oct. 31. “I would like to extend a sincere thank you to everyone who helped make this year’s campaign such an overwhelming success,” said Creston Tim Hortons manager Scott Seitz. The Tuck Shop is run by volunteers, who raise money to support health care at CVH.

Nationally, Tim Hortons owners support more than 500 charities through the annual Smile Cookie fundraiser. Last year, the campaign raised $5 million. Funds from last year’s Smile Cookie campaign helped to furnish a new private room at the hospital. “Supporting the Creston Valley Hospital Tuck Shop through the Smile Cookie campaign to purchase muchneeded equipment for the local hospital ensures that the funds raised in our community stay in our community,” said Seitz. “I think that’s something we can all share a smile about.”

Committee discusses CBT funding, transit BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff A new funding program from the Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) needs agreement about what area will be covered, Kootenay Employment Services general manager Hugh Grant said at the Nov. 7 Creston Valley services committee (Regional District of Central Kootenay areas A, B and C, and the Town of Creston) meeting. The Community Directed Funds Initiative, which will provide $200,000 annually for social, environmental and economic projects, requires broad support from community members and elected officials. “The CBT is not imposing boundaries,” said CBT community initiatives director Gary Ockenden. While the area of Yahk to Creston has been determined by a group of citizen representatives, other communities have yet to sign on. When the CBT agreed to give the East Shore a separate $50,000 pot of money, other areas began to question why they shouldn’t get the same treatment. “Lower Kootenay, Bountiful and KitchenerMoyie all want to be distinct,” Kettle said. “We’ll get there,” Ockenden said about the challenge of determining the fund’s boundaries. “This is a great idea, but keep the politicians out of it,” Kettle said. “Once you put us into it, we politicize it and it changes the dynamic completely. If we are involved it does a disservice to the program.” Ockenden said some areas have chosen to do just that, while others have included elected representatives on their committee. “It’s their choice and what works for one might not work for another,” he said. “I think we are making this more complicated than it needs to be,” said Creston Mayor Ron Toyota. •Options to increase the cost efficiency of Creston Valley’s transit system were also discussed at the meeting. Randy Matheson, research analyst for the RDCK, outlined four options for local regional directors to consider for the BC Transit service. They included making no changes, replacing the community shuttle route service with pre-

booked on-demand service, reducing the community bus service to three days a week from five, and eliminating the community shuttle route service altogether. Matheson made his presentation at the request of directors, who heard from BC Transit representatives earlier this year. The community bus is one of three BC Transit services in the Creston Valley. A HandyDart system is used to transport qualified users from their residence to a destination, and Interior Health sponsors a regular run to Cranbrook for health appointments. All are highly subsidized through taxation, with only a small portion of the costs being carried by ridership fees. Without changes to the system, taxpayer share of the BC Transit service are expected to increase by more than 10 per cent in 2014, Matheson said. Costs have been unchanged in the last five years. After discussion of the options, and identifying a potential need to expand the health appointment run to East Shore residents, Matheson was directed to present other options in February.

“Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.” Those words, not surprisingly, come from Abraham Lincoln. And they provide an apt backdrop to the shenanigans we have been witnessing on the political stage in recent times. First, let me admit that I have been well and truly amused at the trials faced by Prime Minister Stephen Harper in the Senate scandal, and tribulations of that most bizarre of all current Canadian political creatures, Toronto Mayor Rob Ford. I suppose in the latter case, my amusement leans more toward dismay when I see Toronto residents jump to Ford’s defense, vowing to support him as he rehabilitates himself after having been outed as a drunk, a crack cocaine user and a liar. Now, in many situations, a “cast the first stone” attitude might be taken as admirable. But in Ford’s case, this gong show, train wreck of behaviour really warrants no such forgiveness. He’s a politician who has a take-no-prisoners approach of his position, a guy who bulldozes those who get in his way and says whatever he needs to say to maintain his position of power. Given that the role of mayor isn’t an especially great power base — it comes with only one vote on council — the person filling it has to be primarily satisfied with being a spokesperson and having as a high a public profile as he or she aspires to. Diligent effort is needed

In recent A Zen’s-Eye View columns, I presented the first three of eight practices of awakening beings: 1) have few desires, 2) know how much is enough and 3) enjoy serenity. The fourth awakening is diligent effort. We realize diligent effort when we engage wholeheartedly and ceaselessly in wholesome practices. That is why it is called “diligent effort.” It is choosing an activity that promotes total physical and spiritual well-being without diluting that activity with harmful behaviours. The Buddha said, “Monks, if you make diligent effort, nothing is too difficult. That’s why you should do so. It is like a thread of water piercing through a rock by constantly dripping. If your mind continues to slacken, it is like taking a break from hitting stones before they spark; you can’t get fire that way. What I am speaking of is ‘diligent effort.’ ” The opposite of diligent effort is indolence or laziness about wholeheartedly and consistently engaging spiritual practice — whether that practice is going to church, attending a regular yoga class or getting up early and attending morning meditation at the Creston zendo. In a broader view, spiritual practice could include taking regu-

lar walks, eating in way that supports our health or exercising regularly at the pool. Laziness that prevents us from healthful activities is much more subtle than the kind

A

Zen's-Eye View Kuya Minogue

that plunks us in front of our computer to gobble up salty, fatty foods as we watch six consecutive episodes of Breaking Bad. The second kind of laziness is the result of not taking care of the first kind. It’s laziness on steroids. Spiritual laziness and neglect of spiritual practice lead to backsliding into being controlled by many desires and into no longer knowing how much is enough. It causes disturbances in our minds and bodies so that we no longer enjoy serenity. For these reasons, it is necessary to strive diligently in our efforts to interrupt addictive patterns that lead us to overeating, excessive use of intoxicating substances and couch/computer potatoing. Freedom from these habitual and

harmful patterns of self indulgence can only be realized when we develop awareness of the extent to which our laziness prevents us from diligent spiritual practice. It’s obvious that we can’t break the hold of harmful habits until we are aware of them. For this reason, noticing when we have fallen into laziness is the first step to freeing ourselves from the prison of habitual harmful actions. It is as the Buddha said, “If you make diligent effort, nothing is too difficult.” For example, with diligent effort at eating a diet for optimal health, exercising and engaging in spiritual practices, we can solve many of our lifestyle dis-ease. But it takes diligent effort and unflagging vigour in spiritual practice. Suggested practice: Notice when laziness has crept in to affect your decisions about how to spend your time. When you notice that laziness has taken control, choose to do something different, something that will enhance your emotional, mental, physical and spiritual well-being. Kuya Minogue is the resident teacher at the Creston Zen centre. She will be offering a beginners’ meditation class at 7-8:30 p.m. Jan 9, 16, 23 and 30. This course is by donation. Fortis profits from smart meter opt-out To the Editor: I made an inquiry with FortisBC in regard to the new digital, a.k.a. smart, meters that are being installed across B.C. in the near future. There is an optout program for those of us who have researched and found evidence that our health can be compromised by these devices. The information I received from a Fortis employee states that a one-time fee of $110 will be charged to all customers who wish to opt out, and Fortis will charge $22 for each manual reading. I feel these prices are extremely high, so I did some calculating. If 2,000 metered residents of Creston opt out, Fortis will collect an upfront fee of $220,000. Wow! If each of those 2,000 meters is read every second month (as is now done), there will be six readings each year; therefore, Fortis would collect

OPiniOn LinE

reading fees of $264,000 per year. This is highway robbery, and is bullying to those of us who want to keep our analog meters into accepting smart meters. Allowing five minutes to read each meter would take approximately four weeks of work for one Fortis meter reader every second month (five minutes times 2,000 homes equals 167 hours). The non-read months in Creston could be spent reading meters in a town similar to Creston, generating double the profit previously estimated, which would be $528,000 in readings and $440,000 in upfront fees. Reading analog meters would be a full-time job for one Fortis employee. If that employee earns $60,000 annually and the vehicle lease and operation cost $40,000 annually, there is a cost to Fortis of $100,000, while income derived is $528,000, which leaves a profit of $428,000. Multiply this by 10 years. I thought Fortis was controlled by the government! If Fortis expenses are $100,000, that divided by 4,000 bi-monthly meter readings (24,000 annually) equals approximately $4 per read. Allowing Fortis to earn a profit, double the cost to $8 and leave our analog meters alone.

www.crestonvalleyadvance.ca 7

I have not researched how many residents wish to keep their analog meters, but I would venture a guess it is all who have done the research on negative health effects. There is also a privacy issue; however, that will be left for a future letter. Sandy Buckmaster Creston

Bank won’t replace melted polymer bills To the Editor: Do not leave any of the new polymer banknotes in your pockets while doing laundry because they melt. It did happen to someone and the bank said, “Sorry, we can’t do anything about that.” Great customer service, eh? Ursula Bzdel Creston

far, to my knowledge, the Creston community has not yet met that challenge. In other places, communities have seen their lookouts as focal points of use and interest by outdoor groups, local residents, tourists, and recreation and survival groups. Once, when spending several hours on Mount Thompson, I accounted for as many as two dozen visitors. Then and other times, local residents were bringing their out-of-town guests to view the valley, and others were local hiking groups and hikers from other areas. So the lookout site gets enough use to deem it worthy of refurbishing for its recreational, tourist, safety and environmental and historical education values. It has potential for being a greater valuable asset to the Creston Valley communities. Any questions can be directed to myself or to Recreation Sites and Trails BC. Lord helps prevent people from burning out

Deeply troubled by seeing good people in their prime time being burned out, crippled or virtually destroyed, it has been my desire to address the topic for quite a long time. The only thing holding me back was that I did not have a good grip on the solution — until now. The people in question were my friends, family members, co-workers, professionals

and tradesmen, intellectuals and simple ones, you name it. The reasons were anything from a few bad habits to good excuses (feeding the family, getting ahead, paying off the mortgage, helping others, work addiction, proving something to others). Ages ranged from late 30s through the 40s and up. As the years passed, I was shocked by its recurrence, as if we were destined to

repeat the same mistakes time and time again. That sent me on my journey of figuring it out and possibly coming to some kind of conclusion or remedy. In almost all cases, I discovered an overwhelming sense of responsibility. Of course, responsibility is better than negligence but at what cost? See CONSIDER, page 14

The CTS model is a lighter car, made of high tensile steel. It is stiffer, safer, handles better, and above all, is more efficient.

Cadillac in the rear-view mirror of the European premium brands 2014 Cadillac CTS One auto trend that shows little sign of waning is the move towards more luxury or premium cars by manufacturers and consumers alike. As baby boomers age, they have earned the nicer things in life, and the offspring of baby boomers are getting used to the finer things in life, so more automakers are moving upscale. The Europeans do luxury and performance better than most and the Japanese luxury brands have been putting in their time to becoming a real force. But long before the Japanese, there have always been the American luxury brands, with many firsts in features and technology. Established in 1902, Cadillac is one of the oldest, along with Mercedes-Benz, and continues to be General Motors’ flagship in terms of refinement and technology. Looks The smaller Cadillac ATS was released a year ago and went on to win the North American Car of the Year award. General Motors has taken that platform and elongated it to produce the lightest mid-sized car in its class. It’s a full 173kg lighter than the benchmark BMW 5-Series it competes against, and 34kg lighter than the outgoing car. A lighter car, made of

Verdict The price of the CTS ranges from about $51,000 for the base model to $66,000 for the top premium trim level. The Vsport, high performance model is priced at almost $75,000. The Cadillac CTS is not an inexpensive car, but it offers many features like standard heated and vented leather seats, Bose stereo and push button start even on the base model. Compared to some of the other mid-sized luxury sedans it is less expensive, plus it is a worthy car for any driving enthusiast.

By Alexandra Straub B.C. racecar driver Cherie Storms told me she was taking an advanced driver training course to appease her father’s wishes. She’d been putting it off since teenagedom. That said, her father is an accomplished racecar driver and a proficient motorist, so you could argue it was an inevitability. But she had to find the desire in herself first. What followed, even she didn’t think would happen. She recently took home the championship title for the B Spec series in her Mazda2 for the 2013 race season. She grew up in a motorsports household but it wasn’t until she actually got behind the wheel at the driving course that her mindset changed. “I was just overwhelmed with all of the technical aspects that it takes to be a good driver,” she stated. It’s like what my grade 12 math teacher always said, “Math is not a spectator sport.” There was even a poster on the cubicle wall to remind us. The same thing goes for driving. Except there’s no poster in the cubicle for that! We need to be an active participant, not a wallflower. Anyone who has taken advanced driving courses will know exactly what Cherie is talking about. It’s not just about knowing how to shift gears on a manual transmission without jerking the car, or parallel parking your sedan without curbing the rims. Driving is so much more. I understand that this mode of transportation is

Perpetual Driving Drives-U-Crazy Self-Betterment: Because You’re Worth It Truck tires tread lightly in the snow Solid line lunacy It seems to me that few people know when it is permissible to turn left across a solid centre line. If you can make the turn without hindering people behind you that is fine but if you can’t – drive on because it’s the law. I live

a necessity for many. And it’s something done out of convenience rather than love. Kind of like laundry or grouting the bathroom floor tiles. Then again, for others, it’s a passion. Myself included. Taking a specialized course, whether it’s a track day or a race school isn’t just for wannabe racers. It’s for everyone. And we can all learn if we have an open mind. We read to keep our mind sharp. We walk/run/work out to keep our bodies active. We sleep to keep our bodies functioning. Why should driving be any different? Why shouldn’t we actively engage in making ourselves better drivers? Every time you get behind the wheel of a vehicle, there’s a possibility you can change your life or the lives of others. We might not think too much about it, but operating a vehicle is a huge responsibility. Poor driving habits, not shoulder checking, not using your signals, driving in the left lane when you’re not passing are minor details in the grand scheme of things, but have a large impact. It’s never too late to refresh the basics and then pick up a few new good habits. For example, if you look at any of the top athletes in their sport, they’re training most of the time. They’re trying to perfect their craft, even when they’re at the top of it. I doubt Sebastian Vettel slums around in his down time, even after winning his fourth consecutive Formula1 world championship. Sure, he gets a break, but he’s constantly training to be faster and stronger.

In another interview, I chatted with Izod Indy racecar driver Simona de Silvestro. She tells me that there’s really no such thing as an “off-season.” She says she trains all year long. In fact, she trains harder when she’s not always behind the wheel of a car to prepare for the upcoming races. If the pros do it, we should to. Some of the most fun I’ve had behind the wheel of a car has been at a driving school. Whether it was the three-day racing school at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca with the Skip Barber program, or a track day at the Mission Raceway with Morrisport Advanced Driving, or even a track program close to you, it’s a win-win. If we’re all safer drivers then the chances of accidents are minimized and we can keep our vehicles dent-free longer. And avoid going through insurance claims. The few hundred dollars it takes to enrol is of infinite worth in the long run.

By Ian Harwood The temperature is starting to drop, the leaves are clogging up the streets and snow is beginning to fall in parts in parts of B.C. Driving in the winter season brings challenges no matter which part of the province you call home. My remarks are aimed chiefly at truck owners but the message is common for all: driver and vehicles must be equally prepared. In winter, braking and stopping vehicles of all kinds is perhaps where most of us get into trouble. The tires play a critical role in stopping the vehicle, and so they need even more care and attention than in the other seasons. Most SUVs have a passenger car tire classification with M+S stamped on the sidewall, for Mud and Snow and are considered all- season tires. If it is not, your vehicle must be fitted with tires suitable for any type of climate, even the most severe ones. In winter the pressure of the tire must also be controlled more frequently. This is because a reduction of the outside temperature causes a contraction of the air inside the tire, accelerating the normal and gradual pressure loss process by a value around 1-2 PSI for each 5° C decrease in temperature.

near a hospital and see people break this rule daily, allowing cars to stack up behind while they wait for a clearance in traffic to complete their turn.

What drives-u-crazy. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Contrary to popular opinion, a lower inflation pressure than normal does not improve tire traction on snow. It makes them much more prone to damage. Always remember that in any season and with any temperature, insufficient pressure is always the main cause of tire damage. Use brakes carefully. Brake early. Brake correctly. It takes more time and distance to stop in icy conditions. Watch for slippery bridge decks, even when the rest of the pavement is in good condition. Bridge decks will ice up sooner than the pavement. Do not use the cruise control in winter conditions. Even roads that appear clear can have sudden slippery spots and the short touch of your brakes to deactivate the cruise control feature can cause you to lose control of your vehicle. Don’t get overconfident in your 4x4 vehicle. Remember that your fourwheel drive vehicle may help you get going quicker than other vehicles but it won’t help you stop any faster. Besides, many 4x4 vehicles are heavier than passenger vehicles and actually may take longer to stop. And don’t bank on your 4x4’s traction. Your 4x4 can lose traction as quickly as a two-

wheel drive vehicle. If your vehicle is equipped with anti-lock brakes, do not pump them in attempting to stop. The right way is to steer into the skid while applying the brake pedal evenly. Look farther ahead in traffic than you normally do. Actions by cars and trucks will alert you quicker to problems and give you a split second extra time to react safely. ian.harwood@drivewaybc.ca

People point and laugh at Jim Knowles when he drives his Smart Fortwo Electric Drive through downtown Campbell River. But he and his wife Catherine have the last laugh when they open up their hydro bill. “I think the last bill was just a few dollars more than the one we got before we bought the car in July so that’s inexpensive driving,” said Knowles. “I work out at the airport and so I travel about 10 kilometres each way every day. I never let the battery go below 20 percent but I still find I can sometimes go four days before I plug I can sometimes it in overnight.” In the summer, Knowles said he can go four days easily get up to the 160 km range before I plug it in on a single charge but knows the overnight. Vancouver Island winter will take that down to around 120 as the wipers Keith Morgan and heater take their energy toll.

“We moved from Ladner three-and-half years ago with our Smart Diesel. I think people here thought we would buy something a little bigger – this is the truck capital of the Island after all.” But they came back from a car-shopping jaunt from Richmond with the little electric car, which set them back around $26,990 less a generous BC government rebate of $5,000. “We stopped in Qualicum Beach to charge it for a couple of hours and made it back here easily.” The car charges on what is called a level one (basic) charger but with rebates now offered on fast chargers, they are contemplating investing in one. Knowles got in touch with Driveway to tell of his experiences with the smart car, following our launch piece on the BMWi3 electric car a few weeks ago. We would like to hear from others, who are driving pure electric vehicles in rural areas. Electric vehicles are frequently dismissed as being good only for urban dwellers. The Knowles couple are demonstrating they can serve people outside of major cities. Admittedly, they don’t travel far each day but then surely that’s the case for many rural residents. Yes, trucks, larger cars and SUVs will always dominate in parts of the

Obituaries Stanley George Hendren February 7, 1921 ~ October 30, 2013

Stanley George Hendren passed away suddenly at his home in Wynndel, B.C. on October 30, 2013 at the age of 92 years.

Stanley was born in Vancouver on February 7, 1921 to a Creston pioneer family. Stan lived the majority of his life in the Creston Valley. He served with the Royal Canadian Navy during WWII, and at the war’s end worked decommissioning navy vessels in Esquimalt. It was here that he met and married Lorraine Turner. He brought her back to Creston to begin raising a family and start a 33 year career with Canada Customs. After 25 years of marriage, sadly Lorraine passed away. Later, he was blessed to Ànd love again, marrying =ora Webber and helping to raise her two children during their 29 year union. Many grandchildren followed providing much joy in his life. reading aloud began. Her interest in the monologue was reignited when she attended a theatre performance in Norway with one of Norway's best actors. “The memory of his monologue still makes me smile,” she said. Time rolled on as time tends to do and although Munkerud had an interest in the dramatic monologue and had a few preliminary ideas for writing one, it was never pursued. Recently, however, she decided to explore this dream. A dramatic monologue features one speaker with an implied listener, and the audience often perceives a gap between what the speaker says and what they actually reveal. Dramatic monologues, and reading aloud, were in days gone by very popular, as literate families and friends read aloud to each other as a matter of habit. Books were still relatively scarce and expensive, and the routine electronic diversions we take for granted were, of course, nonexistent. If you had grown up listening to

Christine Munkerud viduals plugged into electronic devices would seem isolating and sterile. The monologue recaptures the physicality of words. To read with your body — your lungs and diaphragm, with your tongue and lips — is very different than reading with your eyes alone. The language becomes a

part of the body; they are the breath and mind, perhaps even the soul, of the person who is reading or presenting. The Creston Valley Public Library’s Living Books speaker series is a way for community members to learn from each other. Living books are real people, your friends and neighbours, volunteering to share aspects of their own story. Through living books, the library seeks to encourage the sharing of knowledge and passion between people. Each month, the library hosts a get-together where a member of your community shares their personal experiences. Topics are varied, from art to travel to local history to coping with loss, and everything in between. Attendees of the speaker series learn more about the people in their community and their diverse backgrounds and expertise. Check out living book Christine Munkerud at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 23 at the Creston Valley Public Library. Admission is free. For more information, call 250-428-4141.

Full Circle offering concert SUBMITTED Full Circle, which plays Nov. 22 at the Snoring Sasquatch, is a product of many jam sessions in the Creston valley with local musicians. Currently comprised of Bryan Ferguson (vocals, guitar), Ken Gerding (bass), Keith Brookfield (drums) and Dave Furling (guitar), the group got started when Ferguson started a collaboration with Karl Sommerfeld in 2006. Gerding started to play bass a few months later, and Furlong was next to join, with Brookfield the last to come on board. Although Sommerfeld has since left to play other types of music, the resulting band has been a unit for four years, per-

forming at many dances, as well as recording original material. Born on Cape Breton Island, Ferguson was subject to lots of music at an early age. His mother loved to sing and the neighborhood was full of fiddle and guitar get-togethers. He and his wife, Sarah, moved to the Creston Valley in 2004. Gerding, an electric bass player, displays a fine versatility as evidenced by his ability to play not only the styles of Trio Cara, but also those of the two other bands in which he plays bass, Full Circle and Rainbow Connection. “I started out with dance bands and played with a couple of folk groups in Calgary, before coming to Creston and discovering the vibrant music

scene here,” he said. Brookfield was born in England, the youngest of three boys. The family immigrated to Canada in 1964, taking up residence in Kelowna. He moved to Creston in 1996 and has played in many different bands and local productions. Dave Furlong has been on the local scene as a guitar player since moving here from Calgary. He has played guitar for such groups as the Howling Wannabees, and plans on playing with Full Circle for many more years. Tickets are $12 in advance at Kingfisher Used Books, Buffalo Trails Coffee House and Black Bear Books, and $15 at the door, which opens at 6 p.m.; the show starts at 7.

smashing album, All Children Believe in Heaven, King has sabotaged the typecasting of his early work. The gravel-raw hobo-rock alternating with jazz-noir torch songs have been replaced by a sense of urgency, as if the album is a signpost at the end of the world. King’s own voice has never been more present and contemporary as he avoids the easy answers — and therein lies some of the majesty of the tone on King’s latest work. Willie Dixon God Damn finds King at his poetic best with words that pour out of his heart like a bottle and take you on an evocative trip down a strange memory lane. Musically, you can hear a vast array of influences ranging from the spaghetti-western soundscapes of Ennio Morricone to the Tex-Mex blues of T-Bone Burnett to the psyche-

delic folk-rock of Bob Dylan’s Bringing it All Back Home, and all kissed with Middle Eastern and Gypsy mystery. Fresh off the heels of a year of relentless European and Canadian touring, the band is filling out the rest of the year with performances at some of their most beloved B.C. And Alberta haunts. Proving themselves to be a well oiled touring machine, King and his band show absolutely no sign of slowing down and as the year comes to a close, expect to hear new and exciting music from an artist who is sure to surprise you with his inventiveness. Tickets are $12 in advance at Kingfisher Used Books, Buffalo Trails Coffee House and Black Bear Books, and $15 at the door, which opens at 6 p.m.; the show starts at 7.

Tonic Records Vancouver recording artist Bocephus King — along with band mates Paul Townsend, Wynston Minckler and Charlie Hase — will be hitting the Snoring Sasquatch stage Nov. 23 for an evening of soulsoaked psychedelia that will include a batch of new songs. The enigmatic Vancouver native, who’s effortlessly and melodiously skirted between blues, alt-country, traditional songwriting and modern aesthetics, now finds the voice of a songwriter and musician on a new path within his constantly evolving and distinct sound. The results are nothing less than glorious on his most recent album, Willie Dixon God Damn. Starting with where he left off on the critically acclaimed genre-

Thunder Cats beat Nelson Leafs to stay on top BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

The Creston Valley Thunder Cats ended a three-game winning streak by losing Friday and Saturday’s games, but handed the league-leading Nelson Leafs their first regulation-time loss of the season on Sunday, allowing the Creston team to pull farther ahead in the Eddie Mountain Division of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League. “Everyone in our division lost both Friday and Saturday, and we won Sunday,” said head coach Josh Hepditch. “It worked out for us, but not the way we want it to go for the rest of the year, that’s for sure.” With 24 points, the Thunder Cats are three points ahead of the Kimberley Dynamiters, and five ahead of the Fernie Ghostriders and Columbia Valley Rockies, tied for third place. The Golden Rockets bring up the rear with 14 points. Friday’s game at the John Bucyk Arena resulted in a 7-2 loss to the Kamloops Storm, which leads the Doug Birks Division with 32 points. “We actually played better than the score showed. We had a rocky start and they took advantage of that.” After the Storm scored two goals, Brandon Formosa netted one for the Thunder Cats on a power play at 6:05, but

two more Kamloops goals put Creston down 4-1 by the end of the first period. The Thunder Cats felt they were still in the game, Hepditch said, but two penalties — Colby Livingstone for high-sticking and Formosa for interference — at 11:55 in the second allowed Kamloops to make three power-play goals. In the third period, Formosa scored the only goal, with the Thunder Cats outshooting the Storm 12-8. Saturday’s 8-5 loss to the Grand Forks Border Bruins had a better start, with Justin Post making the first goal and Livingstone scoring twice to give the Thunder Cats a 3-2 lead. In the second period, though, only Trevor Hanna scored for the Thunder Cats, with Grand Forks adding four more to their total. “We kind of took the second period off, and they took advantage of that,” said Hepdtich. A shorthanded, unassisted goal by Connor Kidd was it for the Thunder Cats in the third period, sandwiched between shorthanded and empty-net goal by the Border Bruins. It was a different story when the league-leading Nelson Leafs visited on Sunday, only to go home with their first regulation-time loss this season. “It wasn’t like the best game of our season,” said Hepditch of the 9-3 victory. “We just played an actual typical game

that the guys have been playing lately. It was definitely a huge confidence builder for them to give Nelson their first loss.” The Leafs started the scoring, with Formosa (shorthanded) and Kidd scoring shortly after. Nelson followed that with a second goal at 5:12, but Jesse Collins and Marcel Fuchs soon scored for a total of 4-2 at the end of the first period. The Thunder Cats dominated the second period with four goals, scored by Kidd, Collins (power play), Logan Styler (shorthanded) and Formosa. In the third period, Matthew Murray scored the Thunder Cats only goal at 16:14, and the Leafs responded with a third goal at 2:16. The Thunder Cats will need to maintain that confidence this weekend, when they travel to Kimberley and Invermere for two divisional games. This will be their third match against the Dynamiters this season; on Nov. 1 and 2, the Thunder Cats earned two 5-2 victories over them. “Kimberley is right behind us,” said Hepditch. “We’ve had two very tough games against them. Playing in their arena is very tough, so we really need to put in a good sixty-minute effort.” The Thunder Cats have also beaten Invermere’s Columbia Valley Rockies in their two games this season, with scores of 6-4 and 11-1. But Hepditch doesn’t want to see his team try to coast on those victories.

single-double: Pat McNeice, 101-190. Men’s single: Morgan,

149. Men’s double: Ethan Meher, 244. POA: Bob L., 11.

“That’s going to be a really tough game on Saturday, because in our division if you don’t come ready to play, you’re not going to win,” he said.
