Meeting explores potential uses for old waterworks building by Derryll White

A meeting hosted the evening of November 5th by the City of Cranbrook’s planning division drew approximately 50 people. The topic was the future of the City-owned property between 10th and 11th Avenues, topped by Second Street S. The City properties include City Hall, the Fire Hall, the small brick Electrical/ Waterworks building, the Studio/Stage Door and the R.C.M.P. building. Three parking lots and the small Pat Casey

Park are also included. Participants broke into five separate groups to discuss how the properties could be employed to renew Cranbrook’s downtown area. They reported back to the whole group with recommendations. There was a lot of lively discussion and some very worthwhile outcomes. All participants viewed the Fire Hall building as the flagship property. It was recognized as the icon of Cranbrook’s past and future downtown. Most participants saw the building being

utilized as a gallery/ cultural centre. From that general agreement emerged that the small brick building could be utilized next year as a youth arts centre/artist/s studio, and perhaps a small café/ice cream outlet. There was a lot of excitement produced in trying to conceive of the whole area as having ongoing multi-purpose uses. Participants wanted to see a cobblestoned areas, shade trees, kiosks and small art boutiques developed, along with an expanded use in-sea-

son by the Cranbrook Community Market. There appeared to be agreement with the need to bring more life into the downtown core. With a group from the Baker Hill Heritage Society already working on the restoration of the brick Water/Electrical Building, it was seen by many that this work could drive much of the change. A representa-

tive from this group stated that a combined end-use of a youth arts centre/small café could be instrumental in bringing the Cranbrook Arts Council into the Fire Hall. “These actions could ignite a movement to bring the downtown alive all year long,” the participant said. The meeting, taking place in the old restored

Spending Wilf Hats off to the Area C Volunteer of the Year by Brian Coombs This week is going to cap off with Black Friday, the best bet going for getting some holiday bargains in Cranbrook. You can shop to your heart’s content, grab some great deals and best of all--your money will stay local. To illustrate money staying local, I’d like to relate a story about a five dollar bill that for purposes of brevity, will be called Wilf for the remainder of the article. A few years ago and at a different publication, I wrote about a website with an interesting mandate. The Canadian Money Tracker, (www.cdnmoney.ca) is a site where users who type in the serial number of a bill can follow where that money goes, provided someone else gets the bill and enters the serial number as well. I initially found out about the site because when I received Wilf, he came with the money tracker’s website stamp in small, but bright pink lettering. Now the site recognizes that there is a little bit of a legal gray area here, but points out that no one has ever been charged with an offence doing this. The Bank of Canada gives the answer that they do not condone any marking on bills, but stated that the bill is still legal tender. In other words, you mark a bill at your own risk—although it appears to be an extremely small risk. Currently more than 2 million bills are being tracked by the site, totalling just over $32 million. Now Wilf was no spring chicken when I received him. Issued in 1994, he was dogeared and crinkled, with a piece of tape holding

a good third of him together. When I inputted Wilf’s number onto the site, I found out that he entered the system in Barrie, Ontario, before travelling to Portage La Prairie and Brandon in Manitoba, then Calgary, Alberta and finally Cranbrook. This journey had taken Wilf three years. Keeping tabs on Wilf for the next few years was pretty easy. Every now and then I would look up and see his serial numbers and wonder what they meant for a few seconds before heading to the money tracker. I learned that at least a few people in Cranbrook were intrigued and had entered his numbers. He showed up three times before he appeared in Creston a few months ago. In preparation for this article, I checked the site again and it looks like he is back in Cranbrook. Wilf may be ready to retire. After all, he’s well-travelled and in Cranbrook alone he’s been spent, at the very least, four times now. But with Black Friday this week, I’m sure he’s ready to be spent at least a few more times. You see, Wilf exemplifies the concept of multiplying money on a local scale. This was what was on the minds of the 50 or so businesses participating in Black Friday. They already know that a dollar spent in the community can stay in the community and this event makes it easy to keep your money local this year. Pick up some great deals, chat with the people at your local shops and if you happen to get Wilf back with your change, just go ahead and spend him again. He appears to like Cranbrook.

A Seussified Christmas Carol coming to C64 “From there to here, and here to there, funny things are everywhere,” ~Dr. Seuss. The Off Centre Players are pleased to present “A Seussified Christmas Carol” at Centre 64 in Kimberley. This extremely fun

family show takes a different spin on an old tale and is sure to delight both young and not-so-young audiences. Before the show, sit down to a great dinner and then kick back and enjoy the antics of some of your favourite

Dr. Seuss characters. The show takes place on November 21, 22 and 23. Dinner starts at 6 p.m. and the play starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 for the show and $30 for dinner and the show. Kids 10 and under only pay $10 for the show and $20 for dinner and the show. Tickets are available at the Snowdrift Cafe in the Kimberley Platzl.

Louise Dunn has been named the Electoral Area C Volunteer of the Year. Louise is a passionate quilter who donates many of her quilts to help raise money for others including the East Kootenay Regional Hospital Gift Shop, her father’s seniors home and the Go Go Grannies. She and her friends have also crafted quilts to quietly give to others in need—for example, a couple who had been in a car accident. Louise has volunteered for Meals on Wheels for the last eight years, delivering to 12 to 15 people. Each year

at Christmas she makes something special for each of the people to whom she delivers a meal. One year the gift was grocery bags, another year she made a Christmas runner for each of their tables. Last year she made each one a lap quilt which is about 40 x50 inches in size. Louise is an example of those special individuals quietly giving to help make our community a caring community. Congratulations Louise -- and thank you for all you do!

If the pain, limitation and emotional toll of bowel disease, including crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel and diverticulitis weren't enough, the economic toll is staggering. Treatment costs and the economic impact of these diseases are higher than that of cancer, neurological disorders and heart disease. For many people with inflammatory bowel disease, the underlying cause is related to an inability to digest disaccharides. Disaccharides are a type of carbohydrate and include lactose, sucrose and maltose and are found in most types of complex carbohydrates including grains. Under normal digestive processes, these sugars are easily broken down by enzymes into glucose, fructose and galactose (monosaccharides). Once digested, monosaccharides are absorbed and used by the cells of the body to make energy. In many people with inflammatory bowel disease, this process does

not occur because of a lack of enzymes that break the disaccharide into monosaccharides. What we don't properly digest, the naturally occurring bugs in our gut do for us. The only trouble is that when the bugs in our gut digest disaccharides they produce acids and gases (fermentation) that cause bloating, pain and chronic irritation in the gut, leading to tissue injury and inflammatory bowel disease. A few weeks back I saw a woman who, for years, had suffered with crohn's disease and was in constant discomfort, exhausted from chronic diarrhea, afraid to be away from a toilet and depressed. It turned out she was one of those people who could not properly digest disaccharides and we removed them from her diet. 7 days later, after years of struggling with crohn's disease, her digestive symptoms were markedly improved. She was still tired from chronic nutrient deficiency but her depression had lifted and for the first time in a long time she was optimistic about her future. It was a very moving experience to witness her change and it was all due to a simple dietary change.

Question

Cadillac in the rear-view mirror of the European premium brands 2014 Cadillac CTS One auto trend that shows little sign of waning is the move towards more luxury or premium cars by manufacturers and consumers alike. As baby boomers age, they have earned the nicer things in life, and the offspring of baby boomers are getting used to the finer things in life, so more automakers are moving upscale. The Europeans do luxury and performance better than most and the Japanese luxury brands have been putting in their time to becoming a real force. But long before the Japanese, there have always been the American luxury brands, with many firsts in features and technology. Established in 1902, Cadillac is one of the oldest, along with Mercedes-Benz, and continues to be General Motors’ flagship in terms of refinement and technology. Looks The smaller Cadillac ATS was released a year ago and went on to win the North American Car of the Year award. General Motors has taken that platform and elongated it to produce the lightest mid-sized car in its class. It’s a full 173kg lighter than the benchmark BMW 5-Series it competes against, and 34kg lighter than the outgoing car. A lighter car, made of

Verdict The price of the CTS ranges from about $51,000 for the base model to $66,000 for the top premium trim level. The Vsport, high performance model is priced at almost $75,000. The Cadillac CTS is not an inexpensive car, but it offers many features like standard heated and vented leather seats, Bose stereo and push button start even on the base model. Compared to some of the other mid-sized luxury sedans it is less expensive, plus it is a worthy car for any driving enthusiast.

Truck tires: tread lightly in the snow

‘‘

Remember that your four-wheel drive vehicle may help you get going quicker than other vehicles but it won’t help you stop any faster.

Ian Harwood

’’

The temperature is starting to drop, the leaves are clogging up the streets and snow is beginning to fall in parts in parts of B.C. Driving in the winter season brings challenges no matter which part of the province you call home. My remarks are aimed chiefly at truck owners but the message is common for all: driver and vehicles must be equally prepared.

senger car tire classification with M+S stamped on the sidewall, for Mud and Snow and are considered all- season tires. If it is not, your vehicle must be fitted with tires suitable for any type of climate, even the most severe ones. In winter the pressure of the tire must also be controlled more frequently. This is because a reduction of the outside temperature causes a contraction of the air inside the tire, accelerating the normal and gradual pressure loss process by a value around 1-2 PSI for each 5° C decrease in temperature. Contrary to popular opinion, a lower inflation pressure than normal does not improve tire traction on snow. It makes them much more prone to damage. Always remember that in any season and with any temperature, insufficient pressure is always the main cause of tire damage. Use brakes carefully. Brake early. Brake correctly. It takes more time and distance to stop in icy conditions. Watch for slippery bridge decks, even when the rest of the pavement is in good condition. Bridge decks will ice up sooner than the pavement. Do not use the cruise control in winter conditions. Even roads that appear clear can have sudden slippery spots and the short touch of your brakes to deactivate the cruise control feature can cause you to lose control of your vehicle. Don’t get overconfident in your 4x4 vehicle. Remember that your four-wheel drive vehicle may help you get going quicker than other vehicles but it won’t help you stop any faster. Besides, many 4x4 vehicles are heavier than passenger vehicles and actually may take longer to stop. And don’t bank on your 4x4’s traction. Your 4x4 can lose traction as quickly as a two-wheel drive vehicle. If your vehicle is equipped with anti-lock brakes, do not pump them in attempting to stop. The right way is to steer into the skid while applying the brake pedal evenly. Look farther ahead in traffic than you normally do. Actions by cars and trucks will alert you quicker to problems and give you a split second extra time to react safely. ian.harwood@drivewaybc. ca

Investing: collector car futures The Miata is ‘‘considered the Japanese Lotus Elan. ’’ Nigel Matthews

Looking into my automotive crystal ball, I see a number of reasonably priced Japanese cars with the potential to go up in value, not down. And while you wait for their price to rise these collector cars of the future should give you endless driving pleasure – that is until you sell! Now to be fair, I’ve not always been right so there’s a caution. In 1973, I recall talking to a man, who had just returned to the UK from Australia. He told me about a car called a Honda Civic, which would make a Mini look ridiculous in comparison. My immediate reaction was that I had seen the Toyota Corollas that were just beginning to arrive in England and felt that the Mini did not have anything to worry about. Japanese cars were cheap and would not catch on. How wrong was I? I can tell you that early Japanese cars are becoming much sought after so let’s look at some that are still affordable, if you can find a survivor or rust free example. If you still have one of the first generation Honda Civics, the majority were finished in a metallic gold, blue or green, I would suggest you look after it. In the future, these cars will appeal to the demographic that grew up with them and they will be the future collectors. 1973-1979: Honda Civic: The Honda Civic was introduced during the OPEC oil crisis, first as a two-door and then a three-door hatchback. The transversely mounted (similar to the Mini) 1169 cc engine driving the frontwheels was very peppy and spacious. The Civic was similar to other “Made in Japan” items and considered a throw away automobile and that is exactly what happened to most of them. Rust helped speed up the process also. If you can find a pristine, rust free example, wrap it in cotton wool, it won’t command over $1 million as some Toyota 200GTs have recently but it will increase in value as time goes by. Pay $4,000 - $9,000. 1990-1999 Mazda Miata: Introduced in May of 1989, the Miata is considered the Japanese Lotus Elan. Unlike the thoroughbred and somewhat finicky Lotus engine, the Miata’s four-cylinder, twincam, four-valves-per cylinder engine is very reliable. In an eight-year production run, 430,000 first generation Miatas were built. This rock solid,

rear-wheel-drive sports car does not rattle or shake like most convertibles. The soft top can be raised and lowered effortlessly with just one hand. The Japanese engineers tried out more than 100 different exhaust systems until they achieved the sound they desired to make it sound like a British sports car. Pay $5,500 - $9,000. 1990-1999 Toyota MR2: The second generation MR2 was larger and weighed (160 to 180 kg) more than its see Investing page B5
