Pileup snarls highway traffic

Trustee hopefuls angered by cancellation Katie Bartel The Progress School trustee candidates Harold Schmidt and Rob Stelmaschuk were noticeably absent from the first all-candidates meeting last week. Not because they wanted to be, but because they were not informed of the date change. The event, which was held at Sardis secondary, was initially scheduled for last Thursday, but due to a scheduling conflict with the school, it was changed to the Wednesday a few days prior. None of the candidates were informed of the change. Instead, the District Parents’
Advisory Council, one of the coorganizers, relied on media to get the word out. “I’ve never missed a meeting, I’ve never done that,” said Stelmaschuk. “It really ticks me off; why were we not notified?” Both Stelmaschuk and Schmidt were under the impression the meeting would be held Thursday. They had hoped to introduce themselves to the voters in attendance and show what they could bring to the school board table. Schmidt found out about the missed meeting Wednesday evening after friends had called asking where he was. Stelmaschuk found out Thursday morning from his son who had heard about their

absence on the radio news. Candidate Corey Neyrinck also didn’t realize the date had been changed, but was called by DPAC president Gord Byers two minutes before the start and arrived 15 minutes late. “It’s pretty haphazard, really unorganized,” said Stelmaschuk. For Schmidt, a retired Chilliwack school teacher who worked with both at-risk and gifted students, last week’s meeting was his only opportunity to attend an all-candidates meeting. Prior to the byelection being called, Schmidt planned a trip to Manitoba for this week to help move family into assisted living. The trip can’t be postponed.

“There’s nothing I can do about it,” he said. “I’m disappointed; the organizers should have contacted us.” However, while Gord Byers, DPAC president, was apologetic about the communication error, he said it’s the candidates responsibility to know when meetings are being held. “If you’re going to be a trustee, you’ve got to be able to gather the information and dig,” he said. “You can’t wait for it to be fed to you.” The next all-candidates meeting is Wednesday, 7 p.m. at Chilliwack middle school. It was an ugly commute for thousands of motorists Friday morning after a 17-vehicle pileup closed the Trans Canada Highway at the Vedder Canal just after 7 a.m. The crash sent 13 people to hospital, some with serious injuries. Miraculously, however, no one was killed. RCMP say the incident began when dense smoke from a fire beneath the bridge obscured the vision of the drivers above. When one motorist braked, the following vehicles – including a Greyhound bus – plowed into her. The crash blocked the westbound lane and left it littered with debris and smashed vehicles. Traffic was stopped in both directions as emergency crews struggled to free drivers from crumpled vehicles. The eastbound lane was closed as a precaution, in case an air ambulance needed to land. However, the helicopter was not required and the lane reopened just after 9 a.m. Drivers heading west, weren’t so lucky. It took emergency crews until 11:30 a.m. to clear the bridge and reopen the highway. Westbound traffic was directed south to Keith Wilson. Traffic was diverted at Lickman Road, or taken off the highway at the Yale Road West overpass. But the going was slow. At one point Keith Wilson was backed up to Unsworth Road; Chadsey Road was at a virtual standstill. One driver said his commute to Abbotsford, 20 minutes away, took three-and-a-half hours. The Vedder Canal bridge has been the scene of serious accidents in the past, including two separate incidents that left three people dead. However, RCMP Inspector Tim Shields said that driver behaviour was the likely culprit in the incident. He urged drivers to leave greater distance between vehicles – particularly in slick conditions – to improve reaction time. The bridge has had several upgrades over the years, including reinforced retaining walls on the bridge deck and improved signage.

Students raise voice in choosing new school trustee Katie Bartel The Progress Two high school students didn’t let their age stop them from grilling trustee candidates at last Wednesday’s all-candidates meeting. Michaela Collins and Kennedy Hunter, both Grade 11 students at Sardis secondary, didn’t want to sit back and let the adults decide who will dictate their final school years. “We need to be involved,” Collins told The Progress after the meeting. “There’s a lack of political awareness, of knowing what’s
going on in our community –especially in Chilliwack.” “We [the students] can have an influence,” said Hunter. After listening for more than an hour of candidates respond to questions on budgets, funding, government, policy, and corporate sponsorship, Hunter’s hand shot up. “How is that money going to be directly spent on us?” she asked the candidates. Both Karen Jarvis and Corey Neyrinck championed programs for at-risk students in the elementary grades, while Dan Coulter sug-
gested expanding trades programming and Ben Besler answered “in the classroom.” Collins waited until the final minutes of the meeting before braving the candidates. For several minutes she’d listened to them discuss their views on corporate sponsorship in schools. She heard Coulter and Jarvis vehemently oppose any kind of sponsorship; Neyrinck in favour as long as the corporations didn’t require anything in return; and Besler in full support. The whole time scribbling down notes and formulating a question.
“I would like to return to the topic of private enterprise with a question mostly directed to Mr. Besler,” she started. “You say that you don’t want to be discriminatory with the acceptance of funds, but the message you send is to do what will get you more without regard for ethics. Not only are you possibly sacrificing the ethics of the board and endorsing poor ethics, what about the example you set for students?” Besler told her he didn’t believe it to be unethical. If corporations wanted to sponsor programs or school jerseys that would enhance
Cultus sockeye may be on the rebound Jennifer Feinberg The Progress Cultus Lake sockeye salmon appeared in fairly strong numbers this fall as they fought their way back from the ocean to spawn in Cultus Lake. About 3,500 of the laterun sockeye made it to the Cultus Lake counting fence on Sweltzer Creek, which is just downstream from the lake. “All of the returning fish this year have been healthy and of extremely high quality,” said Keri Bener, Fraser River sockeye stock assessment head for DFO. Numbers of the genetically distinct sockeye have more than doubled from four years ago. It’s an indication the population is “stabilizing” according to the federal scientists at the lab, which has been studying them for decades. Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon MP Mark Strahl and Randy Kamp, Parliamentar y Secretary to Fisheries Minister Gail Shea were on a tour of the facilities Thursday afternoon to see taxpayer-funded science at work at the Cultus Lake Salmon Research Lab. About 200 of the 3,500 genetically distinct sockeye were taken this year for the captive brood stock purposes, to continue multipronged efforts to boost the fragile Cultus population. “We’re not just trying to flood the system with hatchery fish, but to supplement the natural population,” said Stu Barnetson, watershed enhancement manager for projects at Inch, Pitt and Cultus Lakes. “It shows we’re going in the right direction.” Those intensive hatchery

enhancement efforts were part of the DFO plan of attack after 2004 saw only 90 Cultus sockeye returning. They also looked at prespawning mortality, habitat issues, predator removal, and stock assessment. They effectively created “a living gene bank” with the captive sockeye brood stock, said Barnetson, and could later release fry and smolts to help with restoration. “This program gives great hope to a stock that had declined to less than a hundred adults about a decade ago,” said Strahl.

education, the district shouldn’t shy away from such funds even if it means having corporate signage in schools and corporate logos on jerseys. Collins and Hunter hope the candidates took their questions seriously, because even their penmanship won’t be on the ballots come Nov. 30, their opinions may very well be. Both said they’d be spreading their views on each candidate to all eligible voters in their lives.

The local MP appreciated the behind the scenes look at the salmon work, on his first ever visit to the DFO lab facility. Lab staff were starting this season’s collection of eggs and milt from the returning sockeye for incubation. “I wanted to see the onthe-ground benefits, since there’s been a significant investment made by our government in the Pacific salmon fishery,” Strahl said. It’s a sockeye population that’s actually been studied by scientists at the Cultus lab for almost a century.
A total of $26 million annually is spent by the federal government on the Salmon Enhancement Program. “It was good to see federal government investment in actions to improve the returns of this endangered Fraser River sockeye stock. This is an example of how the department’s day-to-day work is addressing some of Commissioner Cohen’s recommendations,” said MP and PS Randy Kamp. Several branches within Fisheries including Salmonid Enhancement, Science Branch, Stock Assessment Division and
Fisheries Management have been working together on the rebuilding of Cultus Lake sockeye. They initially tried adjusting the lake environment by attempting Eurasian milfoil removal and purse-seining the predatory Northern pikeminnow, but there was still some worry the Cultus sockeye would be eventually be extirpated, when numbers continued to go up and down. Despite its unique status, Cultus sockeye never made it onto the federal Species at Risk list along Continued: CULTUS/ p4
SKI & SNOWBOARD RACKS
The first of two all-candidates meetings had trustee elects facing several Chilliwack-specific hot topics. In two hours, questions surrounding corporate sponsorship, government funding, district spending, drugs and alcohol in schools, and completion rates were raised. Here are some of their views. Do candidates favour the school district’s drugs and alcohol policy? Dan Coulter said the policy should be tempered; Karen Jarvis suggested restorative justice as an alternative; Corey Neyrinck said students should be handled on an individual basis; while Ben Besler wouldn’t change a thing. “Children need boundaries,” said Besler. “I would go with the current board’s decision to keep the policy the way it is, I wouldn’t go against the wisdom of that.” Would candidates risk their jobs as trustee in favour of a deficit budget? Jarvis, Besler and Neyrinck said they wouldn’t give up their positions, that their voices would be better served on the board than off. But Coulter said he probably would as an act of protest against “government underfunding.” “If kids are going to suffer, I wouldn’t just sit until all that’s left is mathematics and English,” he said. What programs would trustees cut first to balance the budget? Neyrinck said the board would have to look at which programs are least effective and start there, while Besler and Jarvis said it’s not a matter of cutting in the classroom, but of reviewing the system as a whole. “I don’t think cuts need to begin in the classroom,” said Jarvis. “I think we can be creative with our budget.” kbartel@theprogress.com

Salmon CULTUS from page 3 Species at Risk list along with other endangered creatures, due to what were characterized at the time as “social and economic impacts,” of closing commercial fisheries to protect it. The local fish didn’t make the legally designated SARA list despite acquiring an emergency designation as critically endangered by COSEWIC in 2006, and suffering high levels of pre-spawn mortality and over-exploitation. So a range of other efforts were attempted. “That led us to take the extraordinary measure of enhancement,” said Jeffrey Lemieux, section head of Freshwater Ecosystems at the salmon lab. There were better returns in recent years than those seen this year, however. In 2010, they saw about 10,000 sockeye return, and 7,000 came back the year after that. jfeinberg@theprogress.com Twitter.com/chwkjourno

Group expanding farmed fish protests Jennifer Feinberg The Progress A national boycott of open-net farmed salmon that kicked off earlier
this year in Chilliwack at a local store parking lot, is expanding to more communities. Boycott rallies are slated simultane-
ously for the lunch hour Tuesday at eight Superstore locations across B.C. — including the one on Luckakuck Way in Chilliwack.
The ultimate goal is to get stores to remove the product from their shelves and have opennet pens removed from the migration routes of

wild salmon. “The peaceful rallies at all locations will have pamphlets, signs, posters and other tools to help consumers make informed decisions to protect their health, especially children and pregnant women,” said local boycott coordinator Eddie Gardner, a First Nations elder. Concerns have been raised about health alerts that have been issued, including SeaChoice seafood guidelines, which “redlist” net-pen farmed salmon, cautioning some to avoid it. “This movement is growing and we plan to expand the boycott of net-pen farmed salmon to the U.S,” he said. Open-net aquaculture is “a flawed technology,” Gardner said, since it is not known the extent of the damage to wild salmon stocks and habitat caused by open net pens on the migration routes of wild salmon. No figures are available yet on the impact the boycott has had to date on open-net farmed salmon sales after the campaign launched in January. An aquaculture industry rep told the Progress in an email that readers should be reminded that fish farmers are farmers as well, who care about their product. “Debate and discussion about the food we eat and how it’s grown should be encouraged, and in a farming community like Chilliwack, where I grew up, I would hope the voice of the farmers would be considered with respect,” said Grant Warkentin, spokesman for Mainstream Canada. “Unfortunately, the information presented to the public by the protestors is short on facts and full of fear. “We are open and transparent about how we produce healthy, safe farmed salmon, grown in B.C. by B.C. farmers.” Chilliwack will be a protest location, as well as stores in Victoria, Duncan, Nanaimo, Metrotown in Burnaby, Coquitlam, Nor th Vancouver, and Surrey. jfeinberg@theprogress.com Twitter.com/chwkjourno

The ins and outs of the BC NDP’s 2013 provincial election defeat would bore all but the most hardcore supporter. But there is one good reason to at least acknowledge that the exercise in self-flagellation had to be done, even if you’re not inclined to actually read the party’s 20-page election review that was released Friday. The reason is this: There is no other game in town. Sorry, Conservatives and Greens, the New Democrats have the history, the base and the infrastructure so until something better comes along, they are the province’s best chance at keeping the BC Liberals honest. Right now, the next election isn’t a big concern and the NDP can lick their wounds all they want. Premier Christy Clark is still in the honeymoon phase of her term (according to a recent Angus Reid poll, she’s the second highest rated premier in the country). She may even have something going for her, having learned some tough lessons from her predecessor, and she’s cleaning house. True, Clark hasn’t been tested much in the legislature but we know what to expect when she finally walks through the door. She’ll defend to the teeth her government’s Core Review of Everything including the Agricultural Land Review, the budget, the throne speech and anything else that’s thrown her way. But one day, even Clark’s government will seem dated. A party too long in power rarely escapes folly, arrogance and scandal (and you can be excused for thinking you thought the BC Liberals had reached that stage before the May election). When that day comes, as it will, B.C. will need a thick-skinned leader, sharp of retort and without stain to be in fighting mode. The NDP review holds out some hope that this will be the case. Is the party’s review too much “whine” and not enough cheese. Yes, it lacks punch and has a sour smell. But if it puts teeth back in the tiger keeping a hungry eye on our leaders, that will be a good thing. ~ Black Press
L OCALLY G LOBAL
Super typhoon an example of extreme weather In the wake of the catastrophic destruction by Super Typhoon Haiyan across the archipelago of the Philippines, a frantic international effort has descended on the nation to clear roads and deliver emergency supplies desperately needed by injured and traumatized survivors. Even as Haiyan swelled in savage force out in the Pacific with the Philippines in its sights, many people expected the worst. Any country would have been challenged by this Category 5 typhoon, but the fragile Philippines was especially ill-equipped to cope. According to the annual Germanwatch Global Climate Watch Index 2014 released this month, in 2012 Haiti, the Philippines, and Pakistan topped the list of countries most affected by extreme storms and weather events. In the decade 1993-2012, Honduras, Myanmar and Haiti
were the top countries most affected by extreme weather. The report, which bases its analysis on data obtained from the renowned globally-operated Munich Re insurance company, was presented at the UN climate talks in Warsaw earlier this month. It stated that of the ten most affected countries during Margaret that decade, eight were developing EVANS countries and only two were developed nations. In 2012 Hurricane Sandy wreaked its destructive force on the U.S. east coast but along the way it devastated Haiti leaving 200,000 people homeless and destroying much of the tiny nation’s crops. In the face of Sandy,
Haitians were still struggling to recover from Hurricane Isaac just a few months earlier as well as the devastating 2010 earthquake. According to the GCWI report, globally from 1993-2012 more than 530,000 people died as a result of 15,000 extreme weather events with losses amounting to more than US$2.5 trillion. Those events included tropical and winter storms, hail, tornadoes, storm surges, rainfall leading to floods and landslides, extreme cold, wildfires and droughts. With sustained winds of over 312 kilometres per hour and moving at a speed of 50 km/hour, Haiyan was the most powerful super typhoon to make landfall in recorded history, beating out Hurricane Camille which tore into Mississippi in 1969 at just over 300 km/h. warm surface water, a low pressure area and a calm upper atmosphere. Winds near the water’s surface spiral around the low pressure region as moist warm air rises. The moisture condenses into drops, empowering the circulating winds. Thunderstorms form and clouds rise into the lighter atmosphere. A cloud-free eye forms, possibly 60 km across, and a massive wave forms beneath it. In the eye, air is sucked upwards faster than it can be replaced below, lowering the atmospheric pressure beneath it. So the eye sucks at the ocean itself, drawing up a bulge of water perhaps six metres high that travels with the hurricane to become the storm surge. At 119 km/hour the storm becomes a category 1 hurricane, typhoon, or cyclone depending on its geographic location. The SaffirSimpson Hurricane Wind Scale
at the National Hurricane Center is a 1 to 5 rating based on a hurricane’s sustained wind speed with estimates of potential damage. Usually on landfall, the friction from the land base slow hurricanes down. But in Super Typhoon Haiyan’s case it hit the Philippines at full force and full speed, rushing across the island chain en route to Vietnam in record time. Many worr y that climate change and warming oceans will spawn more frequent catastrophic storms like Haiyan. A World Bank 2012 study titled Turn Down the Heat: Why a 4 Degree C Warmer World Must Be Avoided highlights the extent of potential threats the world and vulnerable people in poor countries will face. Already, according to a Bloomberg Industries’ report, Haiyan is expected to leave an economic impact of $14 billion.

Drivers warned to slow down As a former resident of Chilliwack (near Vedder Crossing) and working in Vancouver (BC Hydro), I spent four years (1981-85) commuting 125 miles per day either by car or by bus (Pacific Stage Lines) and I would more than often see vehicles off the highway in the ditch during rainy days, foggy mornings or when there was more than half an inch of snow on the roadway. Between 1999 and 2001, I commuted to Vancouver from Abbotsford (while working for the BC Liberal Party) either by car or by West Coast Express and when driving by car, would see the same … but only more vehicles off the highway. Nearly two decades had past and still no improvement in B.C. driver behaviour. B.C. drivers, it seems, get their licences out of a Cracker Jack box as we witness with over 260,000 crashes and over 51,000
casualties per year (712 crashes and 140 casualties per day/seven days per week/52 weeks per year) with speed, alcohol/drugs/ medication, distraction, high-risk driving and driving to fast for the conditions being the major contributing factors. (ICBC – Quick Statistics – September 2013, which also has a breakdown of the Fraser Valley by community) The last factor – driving too fast for the conditions – seems to be applicable to the massive 17-vehicle pile-up at the Vedder Canal Bridge last week after idiot fishermen or teenagers lit a campfire, probably with wood that was wet, and idiot drivers failed to adjust their driving habits to cope with the smoke that reduced driving visibility to zero. But of all the stupidity, I see one Chilliwackian wonders if we had a Tram Train service from Chilliwack to Vancouver and would it reduce the chances of
night
major accidents, especially in icy weather. This individual seems to be stuck on the idea that a passenger rail in the valley would offer a handy alternative for people wishing to travel to Vancouver, Surrey, Langley or Abbotsford. He wonders if such a Tram Train Service is just too simple and cost effective for politicians and bureaucrats to consider. No it would not reduce the chances of major accidents. No, it would not be a cost-effective alternative for people going anywhere. And, his idea is just far “too simple-minded”. Drivers in B.C. need to be better trained and their vehicles need a governor so that they cannot travel over the posted speed limit and they need to learn about defensive driving.

Graphic anti-abortion images defended Over the past several weeks, many people have been commenting both for and against the projects that our organization, Valley Against Abortion, working under the Canadian Centre for Bio-Ethical Reform, have been operating in the Chilliwack area. Many people want to know more about us and what it is we do. CCBR was created to combat the most widespread human rights violation of our day— abortion. Human beings, as we know, have human rights, the first and foremost of which is the right to life, without which all other rights are redundant. Pre-born children in the womb are, as science tells us, human beings. Thus, abortion is a violation of their human rights by virtue of the fact that it brutally ends the life of a developing human being.
Our pictures, which we utilize in our projects to raise public awareness on this issue, highlight that sad fact. Our culture chooses to use the phrase “the right to choose,” without finishing the sentence and explaining what that choice is – the destruction of a developing human life. We realize that the abortion victim photography we display is offensive to many people. Considering what it depicts, it should be. All those who sought to reform the societies they lived in – from the abolitionists of slavery to those seeking to end the practices of child labor to the civil rights activists – use shocking imagery to highlight the plight of the victims. We didn’t invent the idea of exposing injustice, we merely adopted it. While social reformers of the past sought to end discrimination
based on skin color, religion, or ethnicity, we seek to end discrimination based on age. Time and time again when we bring our projects out into public, we see people change their views on abortion. People have told us that they chose life for their pre-born child because they saw our truck banners. People have changed their mind after seeing the banner we hang off overpasses. People have become pro-life after receiving our postcards. People have cancelled their abortions after seeing our hand-held signs. We do the projects that we do because they are effective at exposing what abortion actually is—and that knowledge leads people to make different decisions. We are all tied to Canada’s abortion status quo by virtue of the fact that we are tax payers. Abortion hap-
pens over 100,000 times a year, behind closed doors. We are showing people that abortion is a human rights violation that Canada should abandon—because some choices, like the choice to end a human life, are wrong. We would ask those that see our projects to consider seriously what they have seen. We understand that no one wants to see such imagery. We would prefer not to see it, and we would prefer not to confront the culture and face the reaction of the public. But the reality of what abortion is doing to pre-born children in our country every single day compels us to act. We would do this if it were hundreds of newborns being killed every day, so why not for children slightly younger?

Cake artist joins this year’s Christmas Craft Crawl Katie Bartel The Progress Walk through the doors of Elly Isaak’s cake decorating studio, and instantly the sweet smells of baking will fill your nose. Cakes. Cupcakes. Cinnamon buns. Even chocolate. But it’s not baking she’s talking about today, it’s decorating. Elly’s Studio of Cake Design is the seventh stop on the 11th annual Chilliwack Christmas Craft Crawl happening this weekend from Nov. 21 to 24. While baked goods may not be the first thing, or even the second, that comes to mind when you think crafts, Isaak is determined to change that. Cake decorating is very much an art, she said. “I didn’t know I had any artistic talents in me whatsoever, then all of a sudden I started decorating cakes and everything opened up.” Isaak is a retired pastry chef, who worked in school cafeterias for more than 20 years. But in 2005, a breast cancer diagnosis forced her into retirement. In six weeks she underwent three surgeries to remove the cancer, and was told she’d likely lose her breast. She lost 60 pounds in a month, diminishing her sporty sixfoot frame to an anorexic-looking 140 pounds. The battle took its toll on Isaak – known for her easy smiles and hearty laughs – both physically and emotionally. “I was severely depressed,” she said. “I cried all day. I didn’t know if I would live or die.” Baking and decorating became her salvation. Trained by the upper echelon of sugar artists, including Ruth Rickey, James Rosselle, and Peggy Tucker, Isaak opened Elly’s Studio of Cake Design in 2009. She’s taught designs for wedding cakes, birthday cakes, culture cakes, topsy turvy cakes, cupcakes, mini cupcakes, cookies,

She’s taught the how-to’s for an assortment of iced flowers – roses, peonies, lilies, orchids, daisies, poinsettias, and more – as well as intricate details including lacing, pleating, and other such decorative borders. “People don’t realize what you can do when you have the proper tools,” said Isaak. REALTORS CARE® Blanket Drive approaches It’s that time of year again - time to ‘winter’ clean your closets to look for items to keep someone warm and dry. The 19th annual REALTORS CARE® Blanket Drive is set to run from November 18 to November 25 in Chilliwack and across the Lower Mainland. The annual 8 day drive collects on average 4,300 bags of gently used blankets, sleeping bags, warm clothing and jackets to help protect those less fortunate in our region from the cold, wet winter. The REALTORS CARE® Blanket Drive is a perfect example of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. “What we are in need of the most is gently-used blankets, coats, gloves, hats, jeans, hoodies and new underwear and socks for both men and women; and whenever possible, smaller waist sizes,” explains Chilliwack Blanket Drive volunteer Bonnie Gerbrandt. For someone living on the street a sleeping bag and warm winter coat can literally be a lifesaver. Of the 35 charities in the region that benefit from the The REALTORS CARE® Blanket Drive, Ruth & Naomi’s

Licensed since May 1980, I have had the pleasure of being involved with the many changes Chilliwack has undergone. Over the years, our community has become larger, stronger, more diversified and offers amenities that make Chilliwack a very desirable place to live. The Real Estate profession during that time has also under gone many changes. The advent of technology that makes life as a Realtor conveniently manageable. But, there has been no change in my opinion, that has had the impact that Disclosure and Agency has had on my profession. Disclosure took all the uncertainty away, no one ever minded what went on, just as long as they where told what that was. Agency allows clear and certain understanding of the relationship you are entering into with your Realtor! With a career that has survived the riggers of life, I now enter my senior years as a Realtor that offers a wealth of knowledge and experience. I’d welcome the opportunity to meet you, and work hand in hand with you, to accomplish all your real estate needs.

I’m happy to say that Chilliwack is my home, and always has been. This is a city with spirit and heartbeat! I love living here, so it’s no wonder to me that others want to make it their home too. While our city keeps growing and the landscape keeps changing, people’s basic needs tend to stay the same... especially when it comes to buying and protecting their most important asset -their homes. Finding the right Realtor® to help you buy or sell your home, means making a GOOD CHOICE. My professional experience has always centred around helping people from all walks of life, which made a career in real estate a perfect fit for me. Working hard and doing a great job as your Realtor® is always my goal...it’s what I believe in. You can trust that with me on your side, you’ll always get the same top-notch service that I would expect myself. Ready to talk real estate? in Chilliwack is amongst those that receive a significant volume. Since 2008, they have received between 300 and 400 bags every year. The support helps tremendously. They hand out the clean blankets, sleeping bags, coats, hats, scarves, gloves and new underwear and socks directly to our street family members. Everything is accepted and greatly appreciated. Special REALTORS CARE® Blanket Drive donation bags are available at any of the participating real estate offices spread between Whistler and Chilliwack, or feel free to use your own. Local REALTORS® collect your donations, separate clothing from blankets and deliver them to the charities. Donations stay within the communities in which they are donated, or if the volumes are too large, go to charities in greatest need in neighbouring communities. Since 1995, the Blanket Drive has supported more than 165,000 people. Drop off your donation at any real estate office below between November 18 and November 25, 2013. Community Students raise funds to build schools in Kenya Chilliwack students are giving back in the name of Me to We. Following the annual Free the Children sponsored event, which was held this year on Oct. 18 at Rogers Arena, several Chilliwack schools have joined forces to make Chilliwack’s
contributions more powerful. The students are aiming to raise enough money by the end of the school year to help build schools in Kenya, of which one costs $10,000. To aid the effort, several fundraising activities are planned. On Dec. 7, school district
staff will be childminding at Sardis secondary from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. for a minimum donation of $10 per child. Activities, crafts and games will be provided enabling parents to get some kid-free Christmas shopping done. All proceeds go to the cause.
On Saturday, Dec. 14, 50 per cent of all ticket sales at Cottonwood 4 Cinemas will go to the cause. Participating schools will also be doing individual efforts. And with more than eight schools participating, they believe their goal is attainable.

The snow has finally arrived edging, new batteries in our avalanche transceivers and all the other pre trip necessities. The Monday was slightly overcast and perSam fect for WADDINGTON skiing and our day in the alpine was bound to be great. The elevation of the snowline forced us to park the vehicles a couple of kilometers from the parking lot and begin ski touring up the road. Within a few hours our party was standing on the summit of Cheam looking down at 600
A glance at the mountains is enough to tell you that the winter has come and snowsports in the backcountry have already begun. On Remembrance Day Monday I had the chance to break out the skis and head into the mountains for my first day of skiing in almost two years. Some people might suggest that it would not be wise to rehabilitate a recently reconstructed torn ACL with a day of power skiing, however I just couldn’t resist. We decided that Cheam looked as though it had enough snow to be worth trying so we spent the Sunday night tuning our equipment, waxing,

times. A slope, like the south facing bowl of Cheam, can be stable at times, like it was on Monday, or it can be extremely susceptible to sliding, thus causing avalanches. The conditions on any slope are prey to the weather; sun, wind, rain, temperature differences, and storm cycles bringing snow can all change the stability of a snow slope. Snow science is a complicated field however if you are planning on traveling extensively in the backcountry in the winter it is advisable to take an avalanche course that will teach you the basics of making safe choices and understanding what is taking place in the snow pack. Another great tool is the forecasting and travel advisories posted by the Canadian Avalanche Center at avalanche.ca. This resource will give you a broad overview of
vertical meters of untouched backcountry snow awaiting us! With nearly two meters of snowpack in many places the rocks were well covered and the skiing was excellent! A day like Monday excites me greatly because the season is just dawning on us and we have conceivably 5 or 6 months of skiing left until the snowpack becomes too thin on nonglaciated slopes in the spring. We saw a few other people out enjoying the day with us, both hikers and snowshoers, and it seems relevant this time of year to touch again on avalanche safety. For many people avalanches and their associated risks are a thing of mystery and I would like to dispel a few of the common misunderstandings. Not every steep slop covered I snow is at risk of sliding at all

It’s been said that you never get a second chance at a first impression. Spencer Tremblay disagrees. The new starting goaltender for the Chilliwack Chiefs made his BCHL debut Friday night in a game against the Victoria Grizzlies — a debut that was... not so great. Three goals against in the first period, two falling into the softie category. “Obviously tough,” he said, assessing his first 20 minutes. “The first one was alright, but the next two were average. Not great at all, actually. I just missed the puck.” During the intermission, 1,498 fans in attendance were asking themselves, ‘This guy is the solution to our goalie problem?’ In the locker room, the 19-year-old Winnipeg native was trying to collect himself. “I was telling myself to settle down a bit,” the goalie said. “It’s my third year in junior so I shouldn’t have been so nervous.” Tremblay was better for the rest of the game, giving up one goal on 25 shots. But the Chiefs lost 4-3 and the whole thing seemed like more of the same. On to Saturday night then and a quick turnaround against the high-flying Coquitlam Express. A team that has no trouble putting pucks in nets, the most potent offence in the BCHL fired 45 shots at Tremblay. One, just one, got by
him. His Chiefs won 6-1 and he was named second star. Tremblay was big, calm and efficient and made it look easy. “It was a really good team effort and probably the easiest 45 shot game I’ve ever had,” he said. “A lot of shots were from the outside, so I can’t take any credit for it.” It is worth giving the small sample-size warning. Lyndon Stanwood, the goalie who appears to be the odd man out with Tremblay’s arrival, was just as capable of turning in 44 save outings. All too often though, he’d follow outstanding outings with poor ones, and you never knew which was coming on any given night. The biggest thing Tremblay can do to win the faith of his new teammates is to be consistent — make the saves he should, and a handful he shouldn’t, and give his team a chance to win every night. “I like to look calm even if I’m not always calm inside,” he said. “I’m a big presence (six-foot-one and 185 pounds) with decent rebound control. I don’t mind a lot of shots either.” Tremblay should be a motivated guy. His recent resume reads like a road map of Canada. “I played a full season with Moose Jaw (WHL) as a 17 year old, and a half season as an 18 year old,” he said. “They let me go and I ended up with Moncton (QMJHL) for a bit. I

spent some time with Red Deer (WHL) last season before tearing my MCL.” An injury that was originally supposed to sideline him 10 days pushed him out for four months. Tremblay ended up in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League this year, playing with the Waywayseecappo Wolverines. “I’d like to stay in one place, obviously, for a
couple weeks,” he deadpanned. Because he’s 19, Tremblay could be Chilliwack’s main man in net through this season and next. And though he’s playing for a team that currently sports a 6-151-2 record, he believes he’s joined an excellent group. “The offensive skill is really good and our D are steady back there,” he said. “The record
is hard to believe, but if we can string some games together like the one we played tonight, we should be good.” Kyle Westeringh (more on him Thursday) had two goals in the win over Coquitlam, with Carter Cochrane, Austin Plevy, Mathieu Tibbet and Eric Roberts picking up singles. The Chiefs are on the road Friday night, visiting the West Kelowna

Warriors (13-8-0-2). They’re home Saturday night at 7 p.m., hosting the Langley Rivermen (14-8-1-2). ● The National Hockey League’s Central Scouting Bureau released its preliminary rankings of 2014 drafteligible skaters, with nine BCHLers making the list. fourth round or later. Vernon’s Mason Blacklock headlines the BCHLers, joined by Viper teammate Demico Hannoun and the Penticton Vee trio of Alexandre Coulombe, Hunter Miska and Jack Ramsey. Sports Grizzlies move on to final four Jordon Breuker ran for 158 yards and two touchdowns, throwing another in a 28-8 football playoff win over Prince George Saturday night. Breuker’s junior varsity GW Graham Grizzlies hosted the Polars on a rainy night at Exhibition Stadium. Baker Douglas was
Breuker’s top receiving target, snagging four passes, one for a TD. Running backs Billy Hansen and Tristan Davis racked up 86 and 73 yards respectively behind the blocking of big man Jaren Lengert. Cainen Bergh led the GWG D. The Polars had all kinds of trouble holding
onto the football. Bergh recovered two fumbles, taking one back for a major. He added eight tackles and two quarterback sacks. The Grizzlies are into the final four, taking on the Argyle Pipers Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m. at Abbotsford’s W.J. Mouat secondary school.

It is with deep sorrow we announce the passing of Carol Murray of Chilliwack, BC after a long battle with Kidney Disease. Carol married William Murray on Dec. 6, 1963. Their only child, Bret, was born June 18, 1969. Carol was a lifetime resident of Chilliwack. She worked as Program Manager of the Volunteer Bureau for Community Services for many years. She was a graduate of Chilliwack High School, class of ’58. Carol loved her community and dedicated her life to helping others. She enjoyed cooking, word puzzles, genealogy and watching Jeopardy (and she could beat almost anyone!). Carol was predeceased by her loving husband Bill and her parents, Leo and Daisy Wright. She will be sadly missed by her son, Bret; his fiancé, Lisa (Courtney and Caitlyn); her dearly loved cousins and her many friends. We would like to thank the staff, nurses and doctors at ARHCC, Cascade Hospice, Dr. Bekker, the drivers of the hospital transfer bus and her neighbors and friends, Sylvia and Ray for their dedication and care. A memorial service will be held November 22, 2013 @ 1pm at the Vedder Legion. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada or their local Legion.
