The water levels are higher on the Oyster River and the fishing in Spawned out salmon the days to come can be ideal for catch and release trout. With snow in the upper elevations water temperature is cooling and the fish are more likely to be choosy with fly patterns thrown at them. The yellow and red Mickey Finn that was working 2 weeks ago has been changed to a number 8 silver body fly with green hackle. The pools have a few salmon that are spawned out and it appears that Coho are done. On local lakes the fish are biting on power baits and lures cast from shore. If you’re fishing from a boat the cked Lake Weed Edge on Local Sto weed edges can be productive for small trout. Large lakes like Comox and the Upper Campbell can fish very well and some anglers are trolling small plugs and getting fish. The majority of salt water anglers who fish the summer are out hunting or have pulled their boats out of the water. Crabbing and prawning can be good this time of year, the key spots can produce nice catches of crab. Local tackle shops in Campbell River and Courtenay can supply information about traps Crab from the Campbell River area and bait.

After months of research, Leslie Dyck has begun to connect the dots on the North Island. Dyck is the project coordinator for the Food Security Engagement and Research Project, a partnership between Mount Waddington Health Network and Vancouver Island Health. Last week she hosted a Community Consultation on collaborative food security action planning in the region at the Old School in Port McNeill. The consultation drew interested parties together to discuss the goals of the project. “I feel like I’ve been running around, meeting so many people over the past months; this is the first time we’ve all got together in the same room,” said Dyck. Making these connections is key to one of the primary discussions at the consultations: creating a food security hub. Dyck said that there were four examples of hubs on the Island but, while lessons can be learned from these examples, each hub needs to be uniquely tailored to its region. The small-group meetings at the event looked at the assets already in place in the region and the gaps that need to be filled. Of these gaps, one stands out. “I’d say the biggest gap out there is an information gap,” said Dyck. “You maybe have someone doing composting over here and another over there — I’d like to be able to connect those two.” By building these connections between individuals and Cont. on Page 5

Get what you need with assertive communication
Some of the group involved in last week’s food security consultation in Port McNeill. Photo by A O’Toole
Food security a huge issue From Page 4 organizations, the spokes of the hub are assembled and gaps are identified and filled. For example, a community garden could supply organic produce to a nutritional workshop, which in turn brings scraps to a composter, who in turn supplies the community garden. Food security was defined as existing “when all people, at all times, have physical, social and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food which meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life.” Locally, four key elements have been identified: • Availability of food (quantity of
food available to the population); • Stability of food (reliability of food sources over time); • Accessibility of food (ease with which food may be obtained); and • Utilization of food (ability and desire to make use of the food). In practice, its scope is huge, encompassing everything from community gardens to farmers’ markets to food banks. The next step for the planned hub will be to form a committee and find an appropriate lead agency to carry the project to fruition. To get involved locally contact Dyck through the HardyLocalFoods FoodShare page on Facebook.

Fundraising dinner to aid victims of typhoon When a 7.2 earthquake rocked the Philippines in October Donna Cloutier felt the shaking - she was there. The Courtenay chartered accountant was volunteering with Rotoplast, a Rotary charity that funds cleft palate surgeries in third world countries. The quake killed more than 200 people and left 270,000 homeless on the island where her husband, physiotherapist Eddy Betinol, still has family. Cloutier returned home and began planning a fundraiser to benefit earthquake victims. And then, last week, Super Typhoon Haiyan flattened the region, killing an unknown number and leaving hundreds of thousands more homeless. And so the Sunday, Nov. 24 fundraiser, A Taste of the Philippines, takes on an even greater importance, raising money for typhoon and earthquake aid. “It really hits home when it’s family,” Cloutier says. “Some of Eddy’s family was living under tarps after the earthquake. Everyone is displaced now.” And Betinol is not the only local reeling. “There’s a significant Filipino community in the Comox Valley and Campbell River,” she continues. “They all have family who are affected. It’s going to take a lifetime for them to recover. We knew we had to help if we could. There’s a link between Vancouver Island and the Philippines because we’re in an earthquake zone, too. One day it will happen here. It could be us that are homeless.” The event takes over Courtenay’s Native Son’s Hall on November 24 from 5 p.m. until 11:30 p.m. with food and wine, performances and dancing to DJ Syros. All proceeds from the
$50 tickets go to the Red Cross’s Philippines fundraiser. Tickets are available at The Joint Physiotherapy, Cascadia Liquor Store, Pateman Accounting, Mountain City Cycles, Ski Tak Hut, Marigolds Pharmacy and Bario Fiesta or online at www. atasteofphilippines.
com For those that can’t attend, donations can be made on the website or at redcross. ca A Taste of the Philippines begins with, well, a taste of the Philippines traditional appetizers paired with Filipino beer and Blue Moon
fruit wine. Dinner is at 6 p.m., featuring authentic Filipino dishes prepared by Filipino cooks and served with live music by local guitarist Amanda Usher. A cash bar will also be open. After the meal, Cloutier will present a slideshow about the
typhoon, earthquake and her Rotoplast experience, followed by a representative from the Comox Valley Emergency Preparedness Program talking about earthquake preparedness. Then the performers take over: an aerial silks routine,
Pantuso dancers and a Filipino dance group from Campbell River before DJ Syros turns the Native Son’s into a dancehall. The event couldn’t happen without generous sponsors, says Cloutier, shouting out a big thanks to Amy’s Asian Food in Campbell River,
DJ Syros, Blue Moon Estate Winery, Cascadia Liquor Store and Cumberland Village Works. The goal is to raise $10,000 for the Red Cross. To find out more about the event visit www. atasteofphilippines. com
Sawmill inspections continue.work safe 6x11 Proc
WorkSafeBC Prevention staff have been working with industry, other provincial regulators, and stakeholders to ensure that BC sawmills and other businesses that deal with wood dust are, and continue to be, in compliance with safety requirements. Directive order, follow-up inspections and industry action
targeted inspections of other wood products manufacturing industries, including pellet plants, and plywood and pulp and paper mills. We
In April 2012, we issued a directive order to all sawmills in the province to conduct a risk assessment for combustible wood dust, and

Ongoing and sustainable compliance
inspected every sawmill in the province for compliance with that order. A CEO-led sawmill taskforce and industry advisory group developed safety resources to distribute to industry, including best practice guidelines and an audit tool for dust-control management. Three new occupational health and safety guidelines related to wood dust were published, along with two hazard alerts to address risks specifically related to wood dust. Our officers re-inspected all sawmills to evaluate the industry’s efforts to manage combustible dust.
Scope expanded to include wood processing operations
In 2013 and going forward, our officers will continue to address combustible dust as a regular part of their inspectional activity. This winter, a dedicated team of officers will re-inspect sawmills throughout the province. The sawmill industry has made significant progress in addressing dust management. We want to ensure that progress and compliance with wood-dust management requirements is being sustained. Safety in BC sawmills is a vitally important issue, firstly to those who work in the industry, and also to their families and communities. Our common goal is to make wood-dust management an integral part of manufacturing operations. We will continue to work proactively with businesses around the province to make safety

Ladies, if you wear high heels more than once a week, pay particular attention to this column. The average person takes about 10,000 steps a day. High heels concentrate the force of each of those steps on the ball of the foot and the bones at the base of the toes. The higher the heel, the worse the potential damage: a two-inch or higher heel creates three to six times more stress on the front of the foot than a oneinch heel. As a result, wearing high heels regularly can lead to bunions, heel pain, toe deformities, shortened

B.C. has reached out to U.S. states and the domestic clean energy industry in an effort to keep its greenhouse gas reduction goals in sight.
Energy Minister Bill Bennett hopes to have details out by the end of the year for a “modest” clean energy program he promised to private power developers
at a conference in Vancouver this week. With BC Hydro projecting an electricity surplus in the near future, there won’t be another clean power call any
time soon for run-ofriver, wind and other producers, Bennett said in an interview. A priority will be energy development for aboriginal communities.
