Three years ago, when Lake Country student Harman Brar took part in a project to count spawning kokanee salmon in Middle Vernon Creek, the results were incredible. Spawning kokanee by the hundreds splashed around in the creek while hundreds of other lay dead after spawning and completing their life cycle. Around every turn there were more kokanee and the project put the spotlight on the health of the kokanee at that time and the importance of Middle Vernon Creek as a spawning stream for Wood Lake kokanee. So when Brar, now in Grade 11, returned

to the stream this year with his environmental studies class, he was expecting to see about the same results. But the kokanee weren’t there. “Back when we did that project there were hundreds, both dead and alive, but now when we checked there were maybe eight of them,” said Brar, outside of George Elliot school, near Middle Vernon Creek. “We don’t know exactly why the kokanee aren’t there, but one of the reasons could be the pollutants that get into the stream.” So back inside George Elliot, Brar and his classmates decided to embark on a project to see if they could help kokanee as well as raise awareness about the importance of the stream that at times

is littered with garbage. The group is planning to paint nearby storm drains with a picture of a kokanee, reminding people that anything that makes its way into the drain, will also eventually make it into Middle Vernon Creek. They also plan on planting mycelium fungus near the stream in order to use its natural ability to act as a filter and keep harmful chemicals out of the stream. “There is lots of junk in the river and lots of chemicals that make their way into the stream from the highway and from the roads,” said Brar. “That’s why we want to plant the mycelium. The paintings by the storm drains are to spread awareness of

what’s happening. If people see the fish they might start to wonder.” After initially coming up with the idea, Brar approached the District of Lake Country to get approval for the project. It took awhile before he heard back and was even considering moving on, until the project picked up momentum late last week. Harman also brought his friend David Robertson on board and together with the other members of their environmental studies group, the project will get going over the next several weeks. Robertson said they didn’t recognize how bad the kokanee problem was and the project has taken on even more importance.

“When Harman brought it to me and we went to the stream you start to realize it’s a problem,” he said. “There just wasn’t any kokanee. It will be good to see the numbers of kokanee go up in the future but we have to start raising awareness now about what’s happened.” The GESS students have put their project before the Oceola Fish and Game club, who have been working on improving the kokanee stocks. Spokesperson Rick Simpson applauded the youth for their efforts and said every little bit helps. “There is no single smoking gun for the Wood Lake kokanee population crash,” he wrote in an email to the students. “however, non-

point and point pollution in Wood Lake are thought to be among the contributing factors to the decline. The attention to what goes down our storm drains is practical and helpful in raising awareness and perhaps, in the longer term, changing attitudes and behaviour.” So for the two students that was enough to get them going on what started out as a school project but which has the potential to be so much more. “It feels good that we have got a lot of response,” said Brar. “Hopefully this spreads awareness for the next generation of students coming up and they can keep working on it.” newsroom@lakecountrynews.net

HILLTOP

The newest, longest and most difficult trail on Lake Country’s Spion Kop mountain is now open and ready for hikers. Challenge your family and friends to try Spion Kop’s Summit Trail, marked in red. The trail head for the hike (five kilometres in length, with an approximate 450 metres in elevation gain) can be found on Pelmewash Parkway about one kilometre north of the Ponderosa Road intersection.

There is lots of safe parking available at the nearby pullouts on Wood Lake. The challenging trail is perfect for those looking for a workout. It has the most elevation gain to the peak of Spion Kop. On the trail, hikers will enjoy several cool forested areas— many with fabulous views— and pass under a spectacular basalt cliff near the top where it joins Tower Trail (White) to the summit.

District embarks on long-term transportation plan for LC

The District of Lake Country is moving forward with a plan to improve the municipalities roadways after identifying a $1.5 million annual shortfall to maintain the district’s current roads. A steering committee made up of residents, community group representatives, city council representatives and district staff has reviewed the current state of Lake Country’s 200 kilometres of road, examining engineering reports, the projected needs, costs of maintenance, road renewal and transportation improvements that will bring it all together in a mapped 20-year plan for Lake Country. d Through what the district called a progressive infrastructure management approach, the district was able to accurately calculate that Lake Country has a $1.5 million annual shortfall to look after the current roads. Lake Country roads constructed in the 1970s and 1980s are now at the end of their life. “Like any growing community, roads in Lake Country are used by more vehicles, trucks, pedestrians and cyclists than they were when the roads were originally constructed,” said Mayor James Baker. “So when improvements on main roads are

scheduled, it is important to add active transportation components for walking and cycling.” The district’s 20-year plan called Transportation, for Tomorrow, looks at ways to get around Lake Country in safe and enjoyable ways. The preliminary re-

search has been done and now it is time to as for the community’s input to help design a properly functioning road network, the cornerstone of a healthy, livable and vibrant community, say district officials. “This doesn’t mean that every road in Lake Country will have a sidewalk and bicycle path,” stated Coun. Owen Dickie, a steering committee member. “The design of each road improvement project will be based on use, volume and need. It does mean that, on completion, Transportation for Tomorrow will have developed a transporta-

tion network plan that will serve to inter-connect our community in a safe, sensible, logical and cost-effective way.” The 20-year plan involves the maintenance, renewal and improvement of the system of roads, walkways and bicycle paths. A display in the lobby of Municipal Hall and on www.lakecountry. bc.ca lays out the maintenance task list as well as an annual costs. It also explains the various types of roads and active transportation improvements the district can achieve over the next 20 years throughout the community. “We’re at the point where a decision has to be made on funding the $1.5 million annual deficit to manage the roads infrastructure we currently have,” said Greg Buchholz, operations manager. “It is important that the community understands what is involved and how important this decision is right now. The solutions proposed in the Transportation for Tomorrow plan were crafted to respect the rural nature of our community and value the beauty of our surrounding farms and environment.” If residents have questions about the plan, they should contact Greg Buchholz at 250-7665650.

▼ PROVINCIAL ISSUES

The two solitudes of B.C. farmland M y late father used to say that if he ever won the lottery, he would “farm until it’s all gone.” It was 1960 when he and my mother pulled up stakes in the Okanagan, where their families had been for generations, and moved north to carve a homestead out of a half section in the Peace River country. So it’s a mainly northern perspective that I bring to the latest debate over B.C.’s agricultural land reserve. A dialogue of the deaf has been going on for decades in B.C., where there are two separate realities in agriculture. The dominant voice is always from the southwest, from the Okanagan to the Fraser Valley to southern Vancouver Island. This is not only B.C.’s most productive land, it’s also the place of greatest population and development pressure, where three million of the province’s four mil-

BC Views

Tom Fletcher lion residents live and more arrive every day. In the rest of the province, except for pockets that are attractive for recreational development, farming is a tough row to hoe. These days, people are more likely to be moving away. In our urbanized society, the loudest voices tend to be the least informed, from backyard-chicken hipsters to what I call “drive-by environmentalists,” who like to look out their car windows at green fields as they motor from their

subdivisions to big-box stores. The elderly Sikhs and Mexican guest workers bent over in the fields don’t need their lofty lectures on “food security.” Voices from the rest of the province are seldom heard and quickly shouted down, as was the case at the recent Union of B.C. Municipalities convention in Vancouver. Merritt councillor Mike Goetz pleaded for relief from an Agricultural Land Commission that refuses to release a property that has “grown nothing but rocks and tumbleweeds for the last 100 years.” Similar property next door was released, but not this parcel, blocking a project for five years in a little town that could use the work and additional tax base. Urban sprawl isn’t a big problem in Merritt, which like many small towns is trying to hang onto its population. Spallumcheen coun-

cillor Ed Hanoski described the situation beyond the towns, the real rural B.C. He proposed easing the restrictions on building a second home on farm properties. Currently, farmers can put a mobile home on their property for an elderly or infirm relative, but nothing with a permanent foundation. Once that relative moves or passes away, the home is supposed to be removed. Hanoski said a sewage system for such a residence costs around $12,000. Add the temporary foundation, skirting, well hookup, power, landscaping, driveway, and a mobile home that will lose its value if it has to be moved, and the property owner takes a loss of $150,000 or more. That’s why the removal rule is routinely ignored in rural B.C., Hanoski said. These second homes are the only rental stock there is, providing mod-

est income for marginal farms, and should be allowed permanent foundations. Motion defeated, after a scolding from a Sunshine Coast delegate about people lusting to build mansions on farmland. I asked Bill Bennett, the cabinet minister in charge of the latest agricultural land review, about a rumoured proposal to split the province into two zones with different rules. He declined to comment, but described the case of Fort Steele Farms, the East Kootenay community’s only market garden that almost closed because the next generation was initially refused permission for a second home. The two zones approach deserves serious consideration. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalNews.com E-mail: tfletcher@blackpress.ca Twitter:@tomfletcherbc

measures. But even a dog can recognize that a six-foot branch will not travel easily down a three-foot wide trail between the tree trunks. Methodically, she plants one paw on the main stem while she chomps on protruding twigs. Some snap off easily. Others need to be worried off as she tosses her head from side to side. Almost by accident, I suspect, she snaps off the top end of the branch. She picks up the shortened branch in her jaws, and trots proudly down the trail ahead of me, holding her head high. I’m lost in admiration—not for what she achieved, but for her willingness to try it. Of course, with a human brain, I could immediately analyze what she needed to do. SEE TAYLOR A5

opinion ▼ FEDERAL FUNDING

WINNs of change are blowing for Okanagan area businesses The federal government recently announced the Western Innovation (WINN) Initiative and I’m hopeful that the entrepreneurial engine that drives our local economy here in the Okanagan will benefit. WINN is a $100 million five-year federal initiative that offers repayable contributions to help small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with operations in Western Canada move their new and innovative technologies from the later stages of research and development to the marketplace. The first application intake period for WINN begins November 9, 2013, and ends on December 8, 2013. Last week I met with a couple of local innovators, including Accelerate Okanagan, and the feedback on WINN was positive. Accelerate Okanagan, in partnership with the federal government’s Department of Western Economic Diversification (WD), also held

MP’s Report

Ron Cannan a WINN Initiative Info Session, which I understand was well-attended. WINN came about as a result of our Government’s consultations with western businesses and entrepreneurs in an effort to find ways to address the gaps identified in the Canadian innovation process, gaps that slow down getting great ideas to market. The WINN Initiative is also consistent with the Jenkins Report recommendation to support industry through innovation programs and to redeploy funds to help small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) grow into larger,

competitive firms. If you would like to learn more about the initiative, please go to www. wd-deo.gc.ca or contact the WD BC regional office at 604-666-6256. Also on the innovation front is a growing movement called social innovation. There are many definitions of social innovation but essentially, it involves mobilizing partnerships between non-profits, charities, social enterprises, and business to find solutions to our most pressing social challenges. Since 2011, the Government has signaled its support for social innovation initiatives to help community organizations develop and implement innovative ideas for social problems. This October, in a keynote speech at the Social Enterprise World Forum, the Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Employment and Social Development highlighted the importance of social innovation in addressing social chal-

lenges in Canada. He noted that for too long governments have imposed solutions to Canada’s social development challenges, while ignoring the innovative and successful approaches being developed in local communities and the private sector. In fact, efforts to encourage and create vital links between community organizations and the private sector are already happening here in the Okanagan. Later this month, organizations and individuals from across the Okanagan Valley will be pitching their creative ideas for making positive social change at an event hosted by the Okanagan Changemakers, a non-profit organization focused on solving social problems through collaboration, mentorship and action. Highlighting some of the best For-Profit, Non-Profit, Established Registered Charity and Youth Led initiatives, this event will provide participants with the op-

portunity to get together with likeminded social entrepreneurs to talk about social enterprise. Organizers promise some good food, live music, and inspiring stories to get the social entrepreneur ideas flowing. Proceeds from the event will go to supporting year round programming and mentorship for social cause organizations. The event takes place Thursday November 21, 2013, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Kelowna’s Rotary Centre for the Arts (RCA). For more info please go to www. okanaganchangemakers.com. The Okanagan is home to some of the best and brightest entrepreneurs in Canada who are leading the way to a more innovative economy. Not only are they driving the local economy toward job creation, they are also finding solutions to our most pressing social challenges. Their dedication to FREE

succeed is ensuring a better quality of life in our communities and its proof once more that the Okanagan is one of the best places to live in Canada. The Honourable Ron Cannan is the Member

of Parliament for Kelowna-Lake Country and welcomes your feedback at ron@cannan.ca. Information on local announcements and federal government programs can be found at www. cannan.ca .

Remembering those lost in road accidents

hen we combine an awareness of loss and suffering with an optimism that we can make a difference, we can be motivated to take remarkable steps to end the loss and suffering. Look at the money that has been raised, and the important research that has been done with that money, in our fights against cancer, AIDS and other diseases and medical conditions. There are the fund raising efforts for those hit by natural disasters, the most recent being the fund raising efforts to help those impacted by the typhoon in the Philippines. There are countless local examples, one being a group of my friends currently working towards what had seemed by some to be an unreachable goal to raise $50,000.00 to help out a friend in need. A keen appreciation of the loss is a necessary motivational ingredient. The light of hope is also necessary. We are not going to throw our hard earned money, nor our time, at something unless we feel that our contribution will make a difference. The focus of this column, has changed over the several years

ACHIEVING JUSTICE

Paul Hergott that I have been writing it. With my continual exposure to the losses caused by road traffic incidents, I am continually reminded of the significance of those losses. With the growing voice I have had, thanks to the Capital News, I have become increasingly hopeful that my voice can make a difference. The losses are, indeed, incredible. A road traffic incident claims a life in British Columbia approximately every day and a half. Someone is injured in British Columbia, on average, every approximately 6 ½ minutes. Many of the injured will never recover. Those who lose loved ones, of course, never stop feeling that loss. Totally apart from the personal losses, the economic losses to the Province of British Columbia are staggering, to the tune of upwards of ten billion dollars per

for Road Traffic Victims. A “day of peace” has been proposed as a global initiative, a day when we combine an awareness of loss and suffering with an optimism that we can make a difference, we can be motivated to take remarkable steps to end the loss and suffering. The national day of remembrance follows

corner of Dilworth Drive and Highway 97, at 5 p.m. By gathering together, we can help raise awareness of the losses caused by road traffic incidents and of what each and every one of us can do to contribute to the solution. This is not a call for donations; it is a call for

action.of respect by and towards all road users; a day on which exceptional care is taken by motorists; a day of courtesy at the wheel and a day when all road laws are respected so that a world day without crashes resulting in injury or death will become a reality”.

During the summer, the Lake Country Art Gallery ran a series of four art history talks by former summer student Peter Green. And now, it is offering more. Starting Nov. 3, UBC Okanagan art history student and artist Hanss Lujan will present three

presentations in November and December. All talks run on Sundays at 1p.m. at the Lake Country Art Gallery. They will be free and open to the public. For information about the talks, contact the Lake Country Art Galley.

Living a healthy lifestyle is the best way to beat cancer W

e all know someone who has been touched by cancer.

If you’re concerned about cancer prevention you can take comfort in the fact that making

healthy lifestyle changes can greatly reduce your risk of developing the disease.

WELCOMES DR. PAUL ROLLETT, NEW OPTOMETRIST After spending the early years of their careers in Newfoundland, Dr. Rollett and his wife, Brittany, are thrilled to return to Western Canada. In addition to primary vision care services, Dr. Rollett brings his passion and knowledge of pediatric optometry and vision therapy to the Okanagan. As a Developmental Optometrist who has experienced the benefits of a directed vision therapy program in his own life, Paul exemplifies the impact of visual skills on behavior, coordination and life-long learning. Outside of the clinic, you’re likely to find him hiking, golfing, skiing or pretending to know how to play the guitar. Dr. Rollett is excited to be a member of the Lake Country community and is looking forward to getting to know the residents of the area both inside and outside of the clinic.

Here are some tips from the Mayo Clinic and The Canadian Cancer Society on reducing your risks of cancer. 1. Daily exercise. In addition to helping you control your weight, physical activity lowers the risk of breast cancer and colon cancer. Adults who participate in any amount of physical activity gain some health benefits. Strive to get at least 30 minutes of physical activity in your daily routine–and if you can do more, even better. 2. Don’t smoke. Using any type of tobacco puts you at immediate risk of developing cancer. Smoking has been linked to various types of cancer including cancer of the lung, bladder, cervix and kidney and chewing tobacco has been linked to cancer of the mouth, tongue and pancreas. Even exposure to second-hand smoke may increase your risk of lung cancer 3. Alcohol consumption. Research shows that drinking any type of alcohol—beer, wine or spirits —raises your risk

of cancer. The less alcohol you drink, the more you reduce your risk. 4. UV and sun exposure. The risk of skin cancer today is greater than it was 20 years ago and continues to increase. Reduce your risk of skin cancer by avoiding tanning beds, using your ‘sun sense’ (sunscreen and sunglasses, seeking shade, avoiding the sun during the hottest part of the day) and talking to your doctor about any changes to your skin. 3. Eat a healthy diet. Can you really live longer by eating a healthy diet? According to research, the answer is yes. Studies have found that eating five servings of fruits and vegetables daily will extend your life by several years. Along with a longer life, eating more fruits and vegetables help you to arrive at and maintain a healthy weight. Scientists found that eating broccoli or cabbage just three times a month could reduce an individual’s risk of bladder cancer by as much as 40 per cent. Another study in

FITNESS FOR SENIORS

Bobbi Kittle Cancer Research, found that women who increased their cruciferous vegetable intake within the first three years after a breast cancer diagnosis lowered their risk for mortality by up to 62 percent and their risk for recurrence by up to 35 percent. Cruciferous vegetables—named for the shape of their flowers, whose petals resemble a cross—include broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, bok choy, kale and brussels sprouts, among others. These foods are rich in vitamins, minerals, and fibre, which are thought to help protect against colon cancer. They also contain compounds that may help reduce inflammation and ward off DNA damage, both risk factors for disease As well, consider limiting your fat intake by choosing leaner and lower fat foods—red meat

and processed meat increase your risk of cancer. High fat diets increase risk of being overweight or obese which can increase risk of breast, colon, lung, kidney and liver cancers. Consider these other cancer fighting superfoods: Almonds: High in healthy unsaturated fat, protein, and fibre, studies have shown that almonds are associated with lower body weights and body mass index as well as reduced blood glucose levels for those with type 2 diabetes. These heart-friendly nuts are rich in vitamin E, magnesium, and iron. Sweet potato/yams: A medium sweet potato (with the skin) clocks in at about 100 calories, and it’s full of fibre, beta-carotene (vitamin A), potassium, and vitamin B6. Purple sweets supply a healthy dose of anthocyanins, powerful antioxidants that fight inflammation. Blueberries are full of antioxidants, vitamins, and fibre, and are lower in sugar than some other fruits. Enjoy a cup of nature’s

To reduce Lyme disease risks, keep deer out of your yard The colder weather’s arrival means homeowners across the country are bracing themselves for the battle against bold, foraging deer. But with recent reports that Lyme disease—transmitted by ticks that live on deer— is even more prevalent than health officials once thought, keeping deer away from your backyard is not just a cosmetic or financial issue any more. Your success at deterring deer could directly affect your family’s health. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently estimated about 300,000 cases of Lyme disease are diagnosed each year. Only about 30,000 of those actually get re-

rash. Symptoms such as joint pain, headaches, neck stiffness and heartbeat irregularities may get mistaken for flu or other illnesses. In the northeast, mid-Atlantic and north-central states, deer ticks carry the disease. On the Pacific Coast, blacklegged ticks (who also like traveling on deer) spread Lyme disease, the CDC says. Year-round, especially during fall and winter, you should check your own body, children and pets for ticks. Deer ticks are often so small you won’t even feel their bite, so visual inspection is important. If you suspect you’ve been bitten, talk to your doctor right away. The CDC says that

reducing your exposure to ticks is the best defense against contracting Lyme disease. While you can’t vaccinate your family against Lyme disease (the vaccine maker stopped production in 2002, citing lack of consumer demand), you can “vaccinate” your backyard against deer that carry Lyme-bearing ticks. Keeping deer away from your backyard can help reduce your chances of encountering ticks in your home environment. Look for a proven effective, natural deterrent that has been independently tested. As part of your deer and Lyme prevention efforts, keep these facts in mind: • Prevention is easier than cure – in both cases. Even after treatment

with antibiotics, 10 to 20 percent of Lyme patients have symptoms that last for months or even years, the CDC reports. Once deer move into your m yard, they can be diffi- i cult to evict, and they can cause hundreds of dol- a lars in damage. It’s easier p to keep deer away – and avoid Lyme altogether – b than to rectify the prob- t lems created by deer and t the ticks they carry. • A single whitetail deer c can consume 8 to 12 e pounds of foliage a day. a • Home remedies rare- c ly work for keeping deer w away, and trying to treat Lyme on your own can e have severe health con- a sequences. Untreated Lyme disease can cause t arthritis, severe joint pain y and swelling, and even i chronic neurological b problems. c i

ported to the CDC. Many more likely go undiagnosed since Lyme symptoms can mimic other ailments and even disappear altogether for a time. Lyme disease is now the most common tickborne illness, according to the CDC, and its health consequences can be severe. Lyme disease is named for the river-side Connecticut town where it first emerged in 1977. A number of children in the area began exhibiting arthritis-like symptoms, a hallmark of the disease. Hearing Aid inventory

No prescription quick fix for chronic pain

at drastically reduced prices!

There simply has never been a better time to invest in your hearing.

M

any of my patients ask me about ways to manage their pain when it is considerable. This is a valid question and I can’t help but empathize with them. I have had significant bouts of low back pain throughout my life since the age of 12. If you haven’t had chronic pain, consider yourself very fortunate. If you have lived with chronic pain, you know what I’m talking about. Chronic pain, whatASK ever the origin, can be DR.THIEL all-consuming. It affects your relationships, your work, your sleep, cognitive abilities and overall state of Markus being. What’s worse is that Thiel chronic pain perpetuates itself. In neurology, there is a phenomenon called synaptogenesis. In this case, the body sends more nerve fibres to an area that is painful, thereby intensifying the pain. The body thinks its master is not listening and turns up the volume. In addition, there is another phenomenon called neural field recruitment in which the body morphologically changes the nervous system to interpret and intensify the pain if chronic enough. One of the greatest services I can provide to patients is to validate their pain and allow them an arena in which their state is acknowledged and seen as real. If the pain is significant and long enough, as an individual, you’ll feel like you’re losing your mind. I would not be exaggerating if I were to say that I have had patients presented to me who are suicidal as a result of their pain. The pain that chronic pain sufferers are experiencing is very real and cannot be ignored. So what do you do? We are raised in a society that believes that a pill can fix anything. In some instances, the use of medication is correct and necessary. I try to change this thought process by telling them that, for example, you do not have headaches because you have a Tylenol deficiency. SEE THIEL A12

Obituaries

JUSTESEN, HENRY EDWARD 1926 – 2013

Henry Justesen passed away peacefully on October 21, 2013 and will be sorely missed by his wife of 23 years and best friend Gerda; his children Larry (Norma), Lennard, Linda (Bill), Lila (Ken), Geoffrey (Bernadette); grandchildren Barbara, Deanna (Chad), Carolyn, Grace, Charlie and Ethan; great-grandson Jacob; two nephews and one niece. He was predeceased by his sister, Marie Devlin, in 2012. Henry was born in Denmark, November 7, 1926 and came to Canada in 1929 with his parents Edward and Clara. He had an accomplished career, including receiving his First Class Power Engineering certificate at the age of 29, followed by a lengthy career in post-secondary Education including roles as an instructor and then Dean at the Vancouver Vocational Institute, Superintendent of Post-Secondary Educational Programs under the B.C. Ministry of Education, where responsibilities included planning for the formation of the Pacific Vocational Institute. He then took on the responsibilities of President and Chief Executive Officer for a 9-year period of growth and increasing usefulness of that Institute. Henry was an avid pilot and aircraft owner for 30 years. Despite the loss of his left hand in an industrial accident as a teenager, with the help of a self-developed prosthesis, he held both a Private Pilot’s License and Commercial Pilot’s License. His love of flying began as a boy and took him all over Canada and the United States. Henry was a strong believer in building communities and investing in the future. He was a founding Member of the Delta B.C. Hospital Board, served as Delta Constituency President for 10 years and held a number of memberships in various technical and professional associations. He never stopped trying to make the world a better place. A Graveside Gathering will be held at Lakeview Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 2850 Dry Valley Road, Kelowna, at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, November 22, 2013, followed by refreshments at the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 11370 Bottom Wood Lake Road, Winfield. A Memorial Service will take place in Burnaby on Saturday, January 4th, 2014. Our sincere gratitude goes out to Pamela of the Heart Function Clinic and to the Central Okanagan Community Care team for all their support. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the BC.SPCA or other worthy charity of your choice. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.mem.com. and searching his name under stories.

The Scarecrow Ladies wish to thank all of the people who gave so generously to the Lake Country Food Bank Drive in Meadow Brook Mobile Home Park on Halloween Night. Thanks also to the person outside of the park who made the donation and Coopers Store in Lake Country. The Scarecrow Ladies are also The Angels: during the year they collect bottles, return them and turn any money from deposits over to the Food Bank. Angels thank all who save bottles for them!

Transportation for Tomorrow Did you know…? Our community owns nearly 200 kilometres of roads at an estimated replacement value of $100,000,000 – that’s nearly $25,000 per house! In order to ensure our road network services the needs of our community, the District of Lake Country is completing a 20-year comprehensive road network plan called Transportation for Tomorrow. The plan’s vision is…

Getting Around Lake Country in Safe and Enjoyable Ways. Learn more by going to lakecountry.bc.ca and clicking on the Transportation for Tomorrow Quick Link, or visit the display in the lobby of Municipal Hall.

Complete the online or paper survey so we know what you think of the plan. The Transportation for Tomorrow plan addresses roadway maintenance, road renewal and transportation improvements over the next 20 years, clearly defining the level of service that will be achieved and what it will cost to take care of and improve our transportation network.

Lake Country Citizen Patrol needs you! Lake Country Citizens Patrol is looking for volunteers who are concerned about making their community a safer place. Organized programs such as Citizens on Patrol, Speed Watch, Auto Crime and Child I.D. have been running in the community for 26 years.
