Familiar faces such as Aldergrove’s Bob and Karen Long will be manning the Salvation Army’s kettle drive in the month to come outside local businesses and popular gathering spots. Donations help support the Salvation Army’s programs such as the Gateway of Hope shelter and training centre in Langley City.

Christmas kettle campaign needs help By MONIQUE TAMMINGA Aldergrove Star

The Christmas season is upon us and that means the Salvation Army is looking for hundreds of volunteers to help with Christmas kettles. Volunteers took to ringing bells and manning kettles on Thursday in Langley. But the Salvation Army is hoping to gather more volunteers to man their 26 locations around Langley. “We need 500 volunteers and we are at about 12 per cent, which is the norm for this time of the year,” said Gateway of Hope’s Troy Gaglardi. “Our goal is to raise $150,000 which will go directly to services and programs at the Gateway of Hope, which include our extreme weather response shelter and our transitional housing, life skills pro-

grams.” Gaglardi said even if someone can spare two hours, that is fine, too. It can be groups, employees at a company or families. This year he is hoping to find some groups that are willing to sing Christmas carols. Certain locations can accommodate dogs. They encourage parents or grandparents to bring children to take in the experience. They have locations in Aldergrove, Willowbrook, Walnut Grove, Fort Langley and Langley City so people don’t have to travel far from home. “It feels good to be part of it,” said Gaglardi. The Salvation Army Christmas kettles is a standing tradition all people look forward to, he said. “I have had many people tell me it

reminds them of the season, hearing those bells and seeing the kettle and the person there spending their time for others reminds all of us to slow down. “It reminds us of family and friends and the goodness of Christmas,” said Gaglardi. While statistically in Langley, homeless numbers are strikingly on the rise, Gaglardi sees another angle. “I get to see both sides of it. We have seen some tremendous stories of moving forward from homelessness and addiciton to a better life,” he said. “We are seeing people getting work, finding housing, being united with family. “I’m encouraged about that.” If you would like to volunteer at a kettle you can call 604-514-7375 or email kettles@gatewayofhope.ca.

An investigator with the Transportation Safety Board has been deployed to Abbotsford to investigate the fatal ultralight plane crash that took place Monday night. Wreckage from a light aircraft was found at about 9 p.m. in a wooded area south of Highway 1 near Ross Road following a search mission that began around 4:30 Monday afternoon. The pilot was deceased when he was found. Crews were initially alerted to the area of Mt. Lehman and Downes roads after the control tower at Abbotsford Airport lost contact with the pilot and a beacon was sending a signal from the northwest area of the city. Abbotsford Police, two search and rescue teams, and a Cormorant helicopter from Canadian Forces Base Comox were involved in the search over the next few hours. Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service and BC Ambulance Service were also on the scene. At one point, crews searched a property in the 4500-block of Bradner Road after the homeowner reported seeing smoke and fire and thought it might be the plane wreckage. Crews did not find any fire on the property or any trace of the plane. Online reports at one point also indicated that the Cormorant had located the wreckage, but Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said those reports were false. He said the search efforts, which involved about 30 people, were hampered by the pelting rain, wind, darkness and rough terrain. He said crews were also receiving “false and inaccurate readings” from the beacon, making it difficult to pinpoint the plane’s exact location. The aircraft was located in a densely wooded area near a mushroom farm, and it was determined that the pilot had crashed after clipping power lines. He had been en route to Pitt Meadows after departing from Abbotsford Airport. Following the crash, Highway 1 between 264 Street and Mt. Lehman Road was closed for several hours, including through the morning rush hour, to enable BC Hydro crews to access transmission lines so they could be inspected and/or repaired.

Alternate oil pipline route considered By DAN FERGUSON Aldergrove Star

The people planning to build a second oil pipeline through Langley Township are looking at a different route that would avoid digging up the flood plain near the Salmon River. In response to a Black Press query, Trans Mountain spokesperson Lizette Parsons Bell said the company is considering an alternate path, one that came up during meetings with property owners along the proposed route in Langley.

“From those discussions, we have received good input about an alternative that may better meet our routing objectives,” Parsons Bell said in a written statement emailed to Black Press. “We are currently pursuing this actively.” That option could be the Redwoods Golf Course, according to Byron Smith, who is one of the property owners who met with the land agent for the pipeline company. “That would be my suspicion,”

Smith told Black Press. Smith said the golf course, which is owned by the Township of Langley, was raised as an option during the meetings he and his neighbours had with the land agent. The company has also recently told them by email that an optional route is under consideration, Smith said. Current plans would see the new line run through the flood plain near the Salmon River, where the 31-acre Smith family farm and several others

are located. Kinder Morgan wants to expand the capacity of the Trans Mountain Pipeline system that ships Alberta crude to the company’s Burrard Inlet oil terminal by building a second, larger line that would run beside the existing pipe most of the way, but diverting from the existing line where it runs through built-up residential areas in Walnut Grove. Smith and his neighbours oppose the route through their farms, arguing the potential environmental dam-

age from an oil spill would be catastrophic. He calls the golf course a more logical choice, because it would move the line away from the flats. “That’s a better direction, in my opinion,” Smith said. He said he remains opposed to the pipeline because he doesn’t believe it benefits the B.C. economy enough to justify the disruption. The company is expected to file a formal proposal for the route by Dec. 16. -with files from Frank Bucholtz

Farmers fight pipeline plans near Salmon River By DAN FERGUSON Aldergrove Star

As Byron Smith walks past the slough on the 31-acre farm his family owns, a flock of geese takes angry flight, squawking into the air. Smith points to the place where Kinder Morgan is planning to run an oil pipeline, not far from the Salmon River. The ground underfoot is soaking wet. “This is a flood plain,” Smith says. “I don’t know how they’re [Kinder Morgan] going to manage it.” The pipeline is part of a plan to expand the capacity of the Trans Mountain Pipeline system that ships Alberta crude to the company’s Burrard Inlet oil terminal by building a second, larger line that would run beside the existing pipe most of the way, but diverting through farms like Smith’s to avoid built-up residential areas. Smith and his neighbours are fighting the proposal, warning a pipeline breach would be catastrophic. “It isn’t a question about if there is a spill, it’s when there is a spill,” Smith says. He thinks he and his neighbours have a reasonable chance of blocking the proposal based on the environmental impact, but that

will only move the problem to another community because Kinder Morgan will shift the line elsewhere. He believes the pipeline should not be built at all. “The people at each end of the pipeline are making money, but in between [there are few benefits for B.C.]” he says. “I really feel it is not a good business plan.” The 38-year-old married father of two grew up here and still lives on the 9100 block of 222 Street near Fort Langley, in a new house near his parents’ red brick home. He says he didn’t learn the much-discussed pipeline might be running through his backyard until this August. “We’re not in the room,” Smith says. “We’re not part of the conversation. And we were outraged.” Smith organized a Nov. 7 public community meeting on the pipeline that drew 100 people. At the meeting, Eoin Madden of Western Canada Wilderness Committee showed photos of the Enbridge oil spill in the Kalamazoo River in Michigan, and said Canada needs to follow the German lead and develop more wind, water and solar energy sources.

Burnaby-Douglas NDP MP Kennedy Stewart, whose riding includes Kinder Morgan’s oil terminal, said a telephone poll of his constituents found 75 per cent opposed the twinning of the pipeline. Stewart recently attended a National Energy Board public information session on the twinned pipeline in Edmonton. Nine such sessions were scheduled for the Lower Mainland, but he said they have all been cancelled. “They said too many people are interested in B.C.,” he said. Stewart will be setting up a website letbcdecide.ca to provide information about the pipeline plans. He expects Kinder Morgan to file a formal proposal to twin the pipeline on Dec, 16, and that will include the exact route it wishes to use. Liz McDowell of Conversations for Responsible Economic Development (CRED) said the pipeline will create no more than 50 to 70 permanent jobs in B.C., and contribute an average of $26.5 million in taxes each year to provincial and local governments. “The likelihood of an incident involving the pipeline is low,” she said.

Byron Smith is fighting plans to run a pipeline through the Langley Township farm that has been his home his entire life. “If there is one, though, the consequences are catastrophic.” McDowell said the impact of pipelines on property values can be considerable. Directly affected properties could see their values drop 10 to 40 per cent. “If your property relies on well water, the devaluation is

The city of Abbotsford may gain as much as $1.3 million annually in tax revenue with an expansion of Kinder Morgan’s oil pipeline. Company president Ian Anderson presented the projected economic benefits of the Trans Mountain pipeline twinning to the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce on Friday. Anderson is speaking to major communities along the pipeline route all month long as the company prepares its project application for submission to the National Energy Board in December 2013. Abbotsford would be one of a handful of “hubs” along the Edmonton to Burnaby pipeline route if the $5.4 billion expansion project receives NEB approval, according to Anderson. That would include an increase to city revenue. Kinder Morgan Canada will pay $2,065,000 in municipal property taxes to Abbotsford in 2013. Anderson said that would increase to $3,368,000 with a pipeline expansion. At the peak of construction in the city from May 2016 to March 2017, there would be at least 275 workers based here. Kinder Morgan estimates these workers would spend $17 million in the community, which includes $6.9 million on accommodation

Province-wide, the company is expecting to create up to 4,500 temporary jobs during the 18-month construction period of May 2016 to Nov. 2017. The wide range of positions would include logging and clearing operators, welders, truck drivers, and general labourers. A list of expected openings is at transmountain.com/jobs. The company is also encouraging potential local vendors and suppliers to pre-register online at transmountain.com/procurement. The Trans Mountain expansion project seeks to build a second Kinder Morgan oil pipeline adjacent the existing one in order to increase carrying capacity from 300,000 barrels per day to 890,000. The existing line in Abbotsford stretches from Sumas Mountain to the neighbourhoods of Clayburn,

Matsqui, and Bradner-Mt. Lehman. The company also operates a pump station on the mountain. The proposal to twin the line has faced intense criticism, primarily for potential environmental impacts. In 2012, the Sumas pump station spilled 110,000 litres of oil on the mountain. Although no further public consultations are scheduled in Abbotsford, company spokesperson Lisa Clement said that more will be held in late winter or early spring when Kinder Morgan prepares additional sub-applications required by NEB. “We’re definitely not going away. Consultation is not done, or closed, or completed, even when we file (the project application to NEB in December 2013). Once we file, our consultation continues,” said Clement.

VICTORIA – My late father used to say that if he ever won the lottery, he would “farm until it’s all gone.” It was 1960 when he and my mother pulled up stakes in the Okanagan, where their families had been for generations, and moved north to carve a homestead out of a half section in the Peace River country. So it’s a mainly northern perspective that I bring to the latest debate over B.C.’s agricultural land reserve. A dialogue of the deaf has been going on for decades in B.C., where there are two separate realities in agriculture. The dominant voice is always from the southwest, from the Okanagan to the Fraser Valley to southern Vancouver Island. This is not only B.C.’s most productive land, it’s also the place of greatest population and development pressure, where three million of the province’s four million residents live and more arrive every day. In the rest of the province, except for pockets that are attractive for recreational development, farming is a tough row to hoe. These days, people are more likely to be moving away. In our urbanized society, the loudest voices tend to be the least informed, from backyard-chicken hipsters to what I call “drive-by environmentalists,” who like to look

Two solitudes on B.C. farmland

out their car windows at green fields as they motor from their subdivisions to big-box stores. The elderly Sikhs and Mexican guest workers bent over in the fields don’t need their lofty lectures on “food security.” Voices from the rest of the province are seldom heard and quickly shouted down, as was the case at the recent Union of B.C. Municipalities convention in Vancouver. Merritt councillor Mike Goetz pleaded for relief from an Agricultural Land Commission that refuses to release a property that has “grown nothing but rocks and tumbleweeds for the last 100 years.” Similar property next door was released, but not this parcel, blocking a project for five years in a little town that could use the work and additional tax base. Urban sprawl isn’t a big problem in Merritt, which like many small towns is trying to hang onto its population. Spallumcheen councillor Ed Hanoski described the situation beyond the towns, the real rural B.C. He proposed easing the restrictions on building a second home on farm properties. Currently, farmers can put a mobile home on their property for an elderly or infirm relative, but nothing with a permanent foundation. Once that relative moves or passes away, the home is supposed to be removed.

Hanoski said a sewage system for such a residence costs around $12,000. Add the temporary foundation, skirting, well hookup, power, landscaping, driveway, and a mobile home that will lose its value if it has to be moved, and the property owner takes a loss of $150,000 or more. That’s why the removal rule is routinely ignored in rural B.C., Hanoski said. These second homes are the only rental stock there is, providing modest income for marginal farms, and should be allowed permanent foundations. Motion defeated, after a scolding from a Sunshine Coast delegate about people lusting to build mansions on farmland. I asked Bill Bennett, the cabinet minister in charge of the latest agricultural land review, about a rumoured proposal to split the province into two zones with different rules. He declined to comment, but described the case of Fort Steele Farms, the East Kootenay community’s only market garden that almost closed because the next generation was initially refused permission for a second home. The two zones approach deserves serious consideration. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalNews.com Twitter:@tomfletcherbc E-mail: tfletcher@blackpress.ca

Editor: The subject of the Aldergrove Pool and Recreation Centre has become very quiet, and has fallen out of the media. Please provide Aldergrove residents with a formal update as to what progress is being made with our facility. The last we heard, which was months ago, was that the Township of Langley staff was to report back to council on the pools size, depth, budget, etc. Has staff reported back regarding their recommendations and if not what is the deadline for this? In previous news articles it stated there was a gross miscalculation and the costs of this facility would now be substantially higher. Will this mean the Recreation Centre and Pool will be completed in stages? If so, will the pool be the first priority being that Aldergrove already has a functioning ice arena, library and Rec Centre? With the Township 2014 budget on the table, what is being allocated for this facility? Please take time to answer these questions. We believe the Aldergrove residents need to be updated and informed. We feel communication needs to be key as we move forward with this facility. With respect, The Aldergrove Recreation and Pool Society

Hydro overcharging for reading meters Editor: I recently sent a letter to the B.C. Utilities Commission decrying the extortionate charges, $35 per month, to keep and maintain my analog hydro meter. Further to that letter I met and talked with the person who reads the analog meters for Terasen Gas (Fortis B.C. Energy). This person told me that he is paid 40 cents per meter and works for a firm called Ola Meters Inc. that does contract meter reading in North America. This person assured me that contracts can be reached to read any kind of meter. This would include hydro, gas and water meters and the cost would be very low. When B.C. Hydro says that the $35 per month fee is not revenue generating or punitive, I believe it is misrepresenting the facts. Historically, the meters have always been physically read every other month and the cost was such that it was included in the normal monthly charges. For that cost to now approach the cost of energy used is not rational and must be stopped. I believe it is time that B.C. and Kamloops city residents – with their water meters – stand up to the corporate bullying in this regard and demand an end to the illegal practice of negative billing. Signing a contract with Ola would meet these conditions in a fair and equitable way. It might also employ many additional people in B.C., maybe laid-off B.C. Hydro meter readers! The cost of meter reading would be greatly reduced by allowing co-operative reading of all meters on one visit, including City water meters. It should be remembered that cities in B.C. used the same bullying practices when residents were forced to pay up to $1,000 so that they could be safe from the radio emissions of these water meters. B.C. residents must stand up for their individual rights or they will lose them. Call your MLA or MP. Tony Brumell, Kamloops

Coleman outlines potential of B.C.’s LNG development

~ Invitation ~ to Langley SENIORS and their supporters

By FRANK BUCHOLTZ Aldergrove Star

A banner behind the stage at Langley Events Centre said it all — “We won. It’s Christmas every day.” This was the setting for Fort LangleyAldergrove MLA Rich Coleman’s annual fundraising dinner, which raises money for BC Liberal campaigns across the province. In the last election, money from the event helped fund 30 campaigns. Coleman, who was provincial campaign manager, was in a jovial mood Wednesday as he spoke to the several hundred in attendance. He reminded them that, one year earlier, he had said “Adrian Dix will be the most unhappy man in B.C. on May 15, 2013.” Many, including many BC Liberal insiders and even his own brother, doubted his optimism. They were wrong. Jobs Minister Shirley Bond, who introduced Coleman, said “Rich is a believer. There were a lot of doubters. He never was.” While Coleman is clearly in a happy frame of mind, he is also concentrating on his job as minister of liquefied natural gas (LNG) development. He gave his dinner guests a very clear idea of what he has been doing and how the prospects for LNG development shape up. He said his objective is to get investors to see that B.C. is the best option for their investment, as there are many possible sources of gas for the hungry Asian market. He said B.C.’s strengths are the north

Doug and Andrea Froese of Abbotsford first met with representatives of Communitas Supportive Care Society in 2007 to discuss their dream of building a respite facility for children with severe disabilities. They were inspired by their son Matthew, then six years old, and the challenges they often faced as a family in meeting all his needs. Matthew passed away in August 2010 at the age of nine, but Thursday marked the grand opening of Matthew’s House as part of the Campus of Care project on Marshall Road next to Abbotsford Regional Hospital. “I never would have believed that Matthew wouldn’t have had a chance to stay here (in Matthew’s House) … but his time was up here,” Andrea said tearfully in her speech at the opening celebration. “This is the house that Matthew built.” Doug thanked everyone involved in the project over the years. “We are very excited to celebrate the opening of Matthew’s House, and we know it will be a blessing to the community and the families it serves.” Matthew was born with the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck, depriving him of oxygen for several minutes. His disabilities included vision impairment, an inability to walk or speak, stiffened limbs and eating problems.

Matthew’s House respite for children with severe disabilities is now open in Abbotsford. He died unexpectedly when he stopped breathing and could not be revived. Matthew’s House, which is facilitated by Communitas Supportive Care Society, will provide a “home away from home” for children like Matthew from the ages of four to 18 who live with complex healthcare needs. Up to five children at a time can stay at the home-like facility for anywhere from two days to two weeks. Staff will include residential support workers and licensed practical nurses, supervised by a registered nurse. Two family suites enable parents to stay temporarily while their child makes the transition to a stay without them. The 4,000-square-foot home will welcome its first guest on Nov.

25. Matthew’s House is the first of the Campus of Care partners to open. The project also includes Canuck Place Children’s Hospice and Holmberg House, an adult hospice operated by the Abbotsford Hospice Society. Dignitaries attending the grand opening included Mayor Bruce Banman, and MLAs Darryl Plecas and Simon Gibson. The public is invited to Matthew’s House for an open house on Saturday, Nov. 23 from 1 to 5 p.m. The event will include tours, refreshments and draw prizes. Those who would like to make a contribution to the ongoing operation of Matthew’s House can do so by contacting Communitas at 604-850-6608 or by visiting mattshouse.ca

The 23-year-old man charged in the second degree murder of a pastor’s son was expected to be back in court Tuesday. Jesse River Hill, 23, of Surrey was scheduled to appear in Surrey Provincial Court for a bail hearing. He was arrested Oct. 2 for the murder of 21-year-old Taylor Johnson of Delta. Hill also faces charges of break and enter with intent, disguise with intent and discharge of a firearm with intent. Johnson was found shot to death on Feb. 26 in a 200 Street home in Fernridge, which con-

tained a grow-op. Johnson was the caretaker of the grow-op and Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) is saying the motive for the murder is a grow rip. “The accused and Taylor did not know each other,” said IHIT’s Sgt. Jennifer Pound at the time of the arrest. “This was a senseless act.” Taylor’s parents Paul and Wendi spoke to the media about their son at a press conference held Oct. 3. “It’s a horrific experience losing a child, but when you throw in the word murder it brings in terror,” said Paul, a pastor at South Delta Baptist Church. Pound said Johnson was a “good kid.

“He was naive and made a bad decision that cost him his life,” said Pound. He was found dead in the home, in the 2000 block of 200 Street, after Langley RCMP received a call asking them to check on the wellbeing of a man staying at the residence. When they attended, they found him dead, and also found a marijuana grow-op on the property. Taylor’s parents said they had questioned him about some of the new friends he had been around. “He was very trusting and had a lot of compassion for others,” said Paul. Hill doesn’t have an extensive criminal background.

Farmland defender sees red over ALR threats By JEFF NAGEL Aldergrove Star

Metro Vancouver’s determination to protect scarce agricultural land is in for a test as two local cities push to reclassify farms for development and the provincial government eyes radical changes to the Agricultural Land Reserve. Richmond Coun. Harold Steves, who helped found the ALR 40 years ago, says the recent moves send an unfortunate signal that the firm line of the past may soon crumble, making trade in farmland very lucrative. “The speculators are out buying up land already,” said Steves. He pointed to a 130-hectare parcel of ALR farmland in south Richmond listed for sale this year at $55 million – at least double its agricultural value. Steves recently spoke to prospective Asian buyers of the Gilmore Estates property, who he said had no idea what the ALR was or its relevance to their potential investment. There are points all over the region where farmland defenders say agriculture is under attack. The most prominent is Delta’s controversial Southlands development, which was approved by the local council last week and will go to an eventual vote of the Metro board. The 217-hectare parcel of Tsawwassen agricultural land is outside the regional growth

Bill Bennett, the minister heading the core review, has denied major changes to the ALR are in the offing. Metro’s regional planning and agriculture committee last Friday voted to call on the province to ensure the core review protects and enhances both the ALR and an independent ALC, and to reconfirm the ALC will get $4 million over three years to provide better oversight of ALR lands. “It’s extremely important that the land commission be independent,” said Steves, who is vice-chair of the committee. “We’re in for a major test of both the regional growth strategy and the Agricultural Land Reserve in the Metro Vancouver area,” he added. “These are major issues ahead of us that are a threat to food security in the region.”

Audi’s road ahead paved with more than good intentions 2014 Audi A3 Cabriolet/S3 MONACO: Over the next 12 months or so, consumers are going to be treated to an onslaught of new entries into the premium market. Not to worry, the next wave of German sedans and convertibles are of a more affordable nature. Recently Mercedes Benz introduced their all-new CLA 250 at an eye-popping price of just $34,000 for a sleek and sexy sedan. Next year we will see the introduction of BMW’s new 1-series and 2-Series sedans, coupes and convertibles. Audi has been ahead of the curve as they helped pioneer this entry-level segment with the original, the A3 sportback, sold in Canada for years. The all-new Audi A3 sedan will arrive in March of 2014 and the convertible and more powerful S3 sedan will arrive in the fall of 2014. This week I had a chance to drive both the convertible and S3 in Monte Carlo, a full year ahead of their introduction here. Audi is one of the fastest growing premium brands and a big part of that is the variety of cars they offer. Unfortunately, we will no longer get the sportback, but the fact we get the rest of the line of A3s is exciting for buyers. Looks The A3 is built off a shared platform with VW called MQB. This platform was a significant investment for the VW group as it is lighter, bigger and stronger than the last Golf platform and provides a sturdy basis for the A3 Cabrio and S3. The new Cabriolet is 60kg lighter than the outgoing European model, yet the wheelbase is longer and the interior room and trunk more ample. It could be argued that Audi is building some of the most attractive cars these days and these smaller products still convey the same sense of power and solidity that the bigger products portray. The S3 is especially forceful with a 15mm lower stance than the A3 sedan. The air intakes are bigger with more detail; the side mirrors are highlighted with brushed aluminum; and the rear of the car looks more masculine thanks to chunky exhaust tips. The

direct injection turbo with 220hp, matched to Cabriolet on the other hand is a more sophisticated approach thanks to the use of aluminum Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system. A sixaround the front windshield and trim along the speed automatic is confirmed but the duel-clutch doors and rear quarter panel that make the car S-Tronic transmission might be sold as an option look bigger than it is. in this model. Hitch up those snowplows the white stuff is flying I know I wrote about winter driving last week and the snow and rain began to fall in various parts of the province but please don’t blame me for this first blast of chilly weather. I’m here to help and at the risk of bringing on a blizzard, I thought I would share some information on snow plows. For most people who are just using a plow for clearing their own driveway, a straightblade will more than likely be just fine. Snowsport offers a personal plow For most people that is perfect for the home- who are just using owner. This system a plow for clearing attaches to a front mounted their own driveway, receiver just as a a straight-blade will boat trailer would. more than likely be The U shaped bracket is just fine. connected to the receiver and the snow blade rides up and down on these bars to allow for change in the terrain your plowing. Because there are no hydraulics involved, all you do is back up and the snow blade lies back skimming over the surface. When driving forward the blade automatically re-engages for plowing. When you are finished, lift the blade back over the push frame into the transport position. The cost of this option is $1,644. K2 is another brand of snowplow designed for the homeowner with acreage. Designed to work with a front receiver hitch, just like the Snowsport, it simply slides in the receiver and locks in place with a hitch lock. The winch is controlled from inside the cab and will raise or lower the height of the blade. The blade comes with a hardened steel cutting edge scraper, rubber snow deflector, skid shoes, and plow markers. It is available in 82”, 84”, and 88” lengths. Cost is $1,315. If you use a plow to make money, then you will want to be able to do the job quickly and efficiently, so you may want to go with the multi-position. Multi-position plows are up to 50 percent faster due to the fact that you can reposition the blades to all straight-blade positions in addition to the scoop and V positions. This makes the plow adaptable to nearly any job you need to do. When it comes to the composition of the blade you have the choice between steel and poly. The vast majority of snowplows on the market today come with steel blades, although the poly plows are becoming more and more popular. The reason for the growing popularity is that poly is just as strong as steel and maybe stronger. They also have a lower coefficient of friction, which saves on fuel costs and is easier on your vehicle. The poly plows are also saturated with color all the way through so nicks and scratches do not show like they do with steel, plus they do not rust. Attaching and detaching the plow is very important as well. You do not want to be freezing and trying to deal with getting a blade on and off your truck. Try the attachment system for yourself at the dealer so you can see firsthand how easy or difficult it is to use. Most snowplow makers use a single halogen light bulb, which are not bright enough; some makers have come out with dual halogen bulbs with the option of upgrading to High Intensity Discharge. These HID lights are four times brighter than standard halogen bulbs and also last ten times as long. Hydraulics is probably the most important part of the plow, along with the controls. Be sure that the

‘‘

hydraulics system is dependable and the controls are simple and easy to use. Go for quality rather than trying to save a buck. Remember “you get what you pay for” definitely applies here. Cost for these units are $6,000 to $8,000 depending on the model. When it comes to the warranty, be sure to know exactly what you are getting and what the warranty covers. Some only cover parts, while others cover parts and labor. Warranties are usually either one year or two years; so pay attention to the warranty. Take all of these things into consideration when shopping for a snowplow and you will be able to choose the right one to suit your needs. ian.harwood@drivewaybc.ca

Aldergrove Totem Boys in ‘AA’ Soccer Provincials

Aldergrove Secondary Totems senior boys soccer team celebrates the school’s very first Fraser Valley AA Soccer Championship, Nov. 7 with a 3-2 win over Arch Bishop Carney school. The team is now in the provincials, Nov. 18-20 at Burnaby Lake Sport Complex.

Aldergrove tied their first game 1-1 vs. DP Todd and tied second 1-1 vs. St Thomas Aquinas, Nov. 18 in Pool D. Aldergrove then defeated Hugh Boyd 4-0 for second place in Pool D and advanced to play Sa-Hali (2nd place in Pool C) on Nov. 19. See www.aldergrovestar.com for updates.

Kodiaks defeat Hawks two nights in a row By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star

An outstanding effort by the Aldergrove Kodiaks gave them their second win in as many nights against the Delta Ice Hawks. Following their 3-1 upset of the former league leading Hawks at Ladner Tuesday night, the Kodiaks upped the ante with a 7-3 win at Aldergrove Arena on Wednesday night. Kodiaks’ Kodi Schwarz, Adam Callegari and Kenny Prato scored in the first period to put the team up 3-0 at the start of the second period. Schwarz and Brandon Dolby notched two more in the second to put the Kodiaks up 5-0 at the start of the third. The Hawks finally netted one at the beginning of the third but Kodiaks’ Elvis Jansons fired their sixth goal two minutes later. The Hawks netted two more in the next four minutes, including a short-handed goal, before Callegari closed the night’s scoring at 13:33. Two of the Kodiaks goals were on the power play and they out-shot the Hawks 48-36. It was a very productive night for game first star Callegari, who picked

up four assists in addition to his two goals. He is now third in the league for scoring with 30 points after 16 games with the Kodiaks. The game’s second star, Stephen Ryan had three assists that night, putting him on top of the league with 36 points after 19 games. Third star Prato had two assists and a goal, and he is second in the league with 31 points after 19 games. Jeremy Lagler had two assists that night, while singles went to Colen Whitworth, Aaron Markin, Jonathan Philley and Spencer Unger. The win puts the Kodiaks atop the Harold Brittain conference with 28 points after 19 games (13-4-0-2), one point ahead of the Abbotsford Pilots. The Hawks remain atop the Tom Shaw conference with 28 points after 20 games (13-5-1-1), three points ahead the Richmond Sockeyes. Kodiaks take down Hawks, 3-1 The Aldergrove Kodiaks defeated the league’s top team, the Delta Ice Hawks, at the Ladner Leisure Centre on Tuesday, Nov. 12. The Kodiaks notched a goal in each period with the Hawks only scoring in the third for the Kodiaks’ 3-1 victory. Both of the Kodiaks’ first and

second period goals were on power plays, and both were scored by the game’s first star, Adam Callegari. Assists went to Jeremy Lagler and Kenny Prato, and Stephen Ryan and Joshua Cronin. The Hawks’ Brent Chreptyk scored their only goal five minutes into the third, and Kodiaks’ Stephen Ryan closed the scoring at 17:32 that night. Ryan’s goal and assist earned him the game’s second star, as well as kept him the league’s scoring leader position with 33 points in 18 games. Prato is third in the league with 28 points in 18 games. Aldergrove never gave the Hawks a man advantage and stayed out of the penalty box until 18:12 of the third, when matching penalties were handed to Kodiaks’ Joshua Cronin and Hawks’ Spencer Schoen for unsportsmanlike conduct. However, the Hawks gave the Kodiaks a two-minute power play in each period, and the first two cost them the game. The Kodiaks got a week off before they hosted Port Moody Panthers on Wednesday, Nov. 20. The Kodiaks travel to MSA Arena to play the Abbotsford Pilots on Friday, Nov. 22.

Seniors Games logo unveiled Aldergrove Star

When Adrian Brugge of Brugge Design was asked to create the logo for the 2014 BC Seniors Games, he had to consider an image that would reflect not only the 4,000 expected participants, but also the area which would play host to this world-class event. The participants, like the two Langleys where the Games will be held, have been around for a while, and both are proving that they still have a lot of vitality in them. Describing the logo, unveiled on Wednesday, Brugge says, “The wave of blue represents the Fraser River — a tip of the hat to the river that gave birth to Langley and the province of B.C., two key participants in the Games. The river will also play a crucial role in several events, including dragon boat racing. The green figure moving across the red finish line represents the vital force that is found in the participants, and the “V shape is a subtle reference to victory. In 2011, Langley already had a taste of what victory feels

The staggering cost of finding and hiring top talent today—not to mention the millions of dollars’ worth of productivity that can be left unrealized when a company’s employees aren’t engaged with their jobs—highlights

like when it experienced the rush of learning that it had been awarded the BC Seniors Games. Besides being a chance for athletes 55 and older to strut their stuff, the Games make a significant economic impact in the region. Athletes from across the province will descend on Langley from Sept. 9 to 13, bringing with them many supportive fans. They are expected to leave behind an estimated $2 million over the course of the Games, and attract extensive media coverage. Brugge says, “The sun represents both the province and the light within

all of us that inspires others. It also includes 12 rays representing the 12 regions of the province from which the participants will come. Encouraging a lifestyle that keeps seniors physically and socially active fits well with vision both Langley and the province have for their seniors. The Games will be a chance for athletes from across the province to demonstrate what it means to be a senior today. The BC Senior’s Games draws out not only the best in athletes, but also the best in the many volunteers who work together to create

this event. Those who have had a sneak preview of the logo find the “V shape also pays tribute to the spirit of volunteerism which is the very backbone of these Games. This event will mark the 27th anniversary of the BC Seniors Games. Organizers say that if the logo is any indication of what to expect, it looks like volunteers are gearing up to host the best Games yet. In recent years, Langley has also hosted the B.C. Summer Games and the B.C. Special Olympics. The website for the 2014 BC Seniors Games is www.2014bc Seniorsgames.org
