By Jennifer Lang A highlight of Surrey’s Santa Parade of Lights in Cloverdale has been rescued by new sponsors, but organizers say the event needs more sponsors to come on board as costs of putting on a signature event rise along with its growing popularity. The evening Christmas parade of floats, vehicles, antique cars, horses, marching units winds its way through the historic town centre, culminating in the arrival of Santa Claus and a dazzling lighted procession of big rig trucks from Vancouver Island and the Fraser Valley. With an estimated 13,000-plus people turning out, 2012 was a banner year for the spectacle, a favourite with families. The upcoming parade on Dec. 8 is poised to be one of the largest ever in terms of scope.

The next step for Surrey’s Santa Parade of Lights in Cloverdale is to cover additional costs for traffic control and policing, which have also risen, only partly as a result of the growing size of the parade. “The city wants to ensure maximum safety and are avoiding use of volunteers,” he explained, adding he is hopeful Surrey City Hall will agree to cover those costs, but the request will have to go to council for consideration. As of Monday, there was less of a sense of urgency. “I think the city is looking to help us out,” Orazietti said.

Ferry transportation costs of the Island Equipment Owners Association have traditionally been borne by B.C. Ferries, said Paul Orazietti, executive director of the Cloverdale BIA, which co-organizes the parade with the Cloverdale Chamber of Commerce. “Unfortunately, this year, we have been forced to pick up additional costs,” Orazietti said, explaining the ferry costs represented about $7,000 in unexpected budget expenses. When sponsors were approached for $500 contributions, they readily answered the call, securing 12 Vancouver Island big rigs from the Island Equipment Owners Association to join the lighted truck convoy. On Sunday, Dec. 8 the convoy starts out in Cloverdale and continues to Hol-

Clova floats Christmas pageant

Correction

Who says Christmas pageants are reserved for schools and churches only? The Clova Cinema is looking for interested performers who want to be part of the movie house’s first-ever Christmas pageant. The family-owned, single-screen cinema is looking for five-to eight-minute acts in hopes of putting together a full program for a family-friendly, allages seasonal fundraiser. The performance date is still to be determined. At least eight to 10 acts need to confirm by Friday, Nov. 22 for the show to go ahead. Fifty per cent of the proceeds from the event would go towards the cinema’s digital conversion, with the rest going to a local charity called the People’s Foundation of Sierra Leone. Donations for the Surrey Food Bank would be collected as well. Email clovacinema@telus.net.

Convenience that “more than adequately provides required goods and services of the immediate, local and surrounding neighbourhood.” It also states that another local 7-Eleven, located at 17638 60 Avenue, has a “high level of robberies, drug dealing and other criminal activity and not conducive to a residential development” and notes the property is within 600

metres of Surrey Centre Elementary School. Resident Jacqueline Davison wasted no time in signing her name as she paid for purchases during a recent after school visit with her two grandchildren, Kacie, 4, and Damien, 10. Davison objects to a 7-Eleven coming into her neighbourhood because it’s more of a big box retailer. She fears it will change the unique character and sense of heritage in the neighbourhood.

“This is the best store. Have you tried the Screamers? You have to try their Screamers,” she said, explaining Screamers are a colourful frozen slush ice confection topped with a dollop of whipped cream. The Gills opened their store eight years ago in August. “They’re all little businesses,” Ramandeep said. “It’s so hard for people to get jobs nowadays and for people starting their own businesses.”

Our veterans deserve more To the editor; Today I attended the Remembrance Day ceremony at the Crescent Beach Legion. I came to honour those who have sacrificed much. I had difficulty listening respectfully to the message from our Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Steven Harper’s letter said, “You and your comrades deserve our abiding gratitude and respect”. These words are hollow when you are cutting back the support

our veterans deserve. The former compensation provided an average taxfree payment of $31,000 per year for life. Today the average one-time payout has been about $45,000. You say, “Our veterans are a national treasure”. These words not only ring hollow but also are disrespectful. These men and woman have risked their lives and their health. Some have given their lives. They deserve to be appropriately com-

pensated, not abandoned by your obsession with government cost-cutting. “You and your comrades deserve our abiding gratitude and respect” is all fine and good, Mr. Prime Minister, when it doesn’t cost any money. Mr. Harper, you are our Prime Minister, please act like one and give the veterans the support they desperately need and deserve. Phil Harrison

Grizzly bear trophy hunt a disgrace

To the editor; I am wondering if we truly live in a democratic society. Statistics say that a majority of British Columbians want to see an end to the grizzly bear trophy hunt, however, our government continues to license it, calling it ‘sustainable’ and ‘responsible’. Grizzly bears are an endangered species – their range has shrunk to a third of what it once was due to habitat loss and hunting, and their once large

numbers are dwindling. The government’s stated population numbers have recently been challenged by a group of university researchers which shows that they don’t really know how many bears there are. At the rate our own species is progressing, it’s quite unlikely that in the future we will have any number of these bears at all! Perhaps we’ll have to change the name of the Great Bear Rainforest to something else.

Trophy hunting of any kind is a reprehensible ideology in my mind. And apparently many of you agree. So if people like you and me want an end to the grizzly bear trophy hunt, we are going to have to bring it by way of our voices loud and clear because at this point, our government is still not listening. Driver helps horses B.C.’s richest day in harness racing is paying off for retired race horses – thanks to Ontariobased driver Billy Davis Jr. The star attraction at this year’s B.C. Breeders Stakes at Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino has donated more than $5,300 in earnings to Greener Pastures Standardbred Adoption Society. Davis, a Lord Tweedsmuir grad, got his start at Fraser Downs and returned to his home track Nov. 11. His contribution

to Greener Pastures has been matched by Harness Racing B.C. – the association representing drivers, trainers, owners and breeders – for a total donation of $10,600. Total track handles were up over last year, even with one less race, says Harness B.C. executive director Jackson Wittup. – Cloverdale Reporter

“The big push now is for people to bring donations and charitable items” for the Surrey Food Bank and Surrey Christmas Bureau. “The show is looking solid,” he said. An estimated85 to 100 vehicles and floats are taking part, along with 700 to 800 individuals. “It’s bordering on being the largest we’ve ever done, and we want to make sure it’s meaningful in terms of donations of food and gifts.” The parade starts at 5 p.m. from the Cloverdale Fairgrounds parking lot and will make its way to 176 Street via 60

Then it goes south on 177B Street, and right on 58 Avenue to 176 Street and then heads south to 56A Avenue. “This is not a swan song,” Orazietti said. “We want to get people to appreciate what we’re going and ask for more support. Share your family’s history Whether it’s an heirloom like a family quilt, a scrapbook filled with photos and letters, a snazzy digital slideshow – or even an artificial limb – there’s a story behind it. Remarkably, these are just a few of the objects people have brought to the Cloverdale Library’s annual family history show and tell event. It’s a forum where people who have been documenting their family history can share their discoveries and showcase their treasures with a wider audience. This year’s Family History Show and Tell is Saturday, Nov. 30 from 1:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Participants are invited to share

their stories. A laptop and a projector will be available for those wishing to demonstrate their family history websites or digital collections. (Please note: There’s a 10-minute time limit for your talk.) Visitors without stories are also welcome to attend. They may discover a great Christmas gift idea or simply be inspired, organizers say. Some light refreshments will be provided. The program is free, but pre-registration is necessary. By Jennifer Lang The Versatiles, Cloverdale’s golden-aged variety performers, are getting their tap-shoes and bow ties ready for a busy Christmas season. The group has eight shows and counting in the next two months, including a major fundraiser planned for Dec. 1 at the Cloverdale Legion. It’s Beginning To Look Like is a seasonal variety show of songs, laughter, and music of a bygone era. The troupe is raising money to purchase a new sound system for performances. Tickets are $10 and available in advance at the Cloverdale Legion, 17567 57 Avenue. Other performances include a Dec. 12 show at the Langley Legion, plus two shows at elementary schools in Langley. The Versatiles performed at one local elementary school last Christmas season, and the students responded with enthusiasm for the old-time songs and comedic stylings. “We’re doing two this year, it’s really nice,” says Susie (Francis) Hall, musical director and founder. “We love doing things with the kids.” The group rehearses at the Cloverdale Legion every Mon-

B.C. Ferries to cut senior’s discount, add slots

Sailing cuts on minor and northern routes are also in the works, as are more fare increases to boost revenues By Tom Fletcher VICTORIA – Sailing cuts are coming in April to most of BC Ferries’ minor and northern routes, as the corporation looks to save $18.9 million in the next two years. Transportation Minister Todd Stone and BC Ferries CEO Mike Corrigan announced the reductions Monday, along with a plan to begin charging seniors half passenger fares that are currently offered free from Monday to Thursday. BC Ferries is also planning a pilot project with slot machines on the main routes from Vancouver Island to the mainland, to test the revenue potential. Fare increases of four per cent and 3.9 per cent are to

Good in snow A poll has found only half of B.C. motorists plan to use winter tires even though two-thirds agree that everyone should have them. The survey by Insights West for the B.C. Automobile Association (BCAA) found 87 per cent rated themselves as a good winter driver, saying they worry about others on the road. Just 32 per cent of those reached admitted to “freaking out a bit” when they realize they’ll have to drive in the snow. Of those who don’t plan to use winter tires, 54 per cent said it doesn’t snow enough near them while 51 per cent believe all-season tires are safe enough to get them through winter. BCAA spokesman Ken Cousin said that underscores a misperception that winter tires are only for driving in snow. “In fact, winter tires are the safest option for all winter conditions – whether it’s ice, frost, slush or snow.” The survey also found nearly 30 per cent of B.C. drivers were not taught how to drive in winter conditions. – Black Press

This is why it is so important to have an Accredited Mortgage Professional (AMP) search the market for the best possible rates and options. Our team does just that! 1. Mortgage Pre-approval: Arranging a pre-approved mortgage is one of the most important steps in the home buying process. It not only protects you in the event of an interest rate increase for up to 120 days, it also provides you and your realtor with a price range for looking at homes. 2. Go Shopping: Your realtor will help you find a property that suits your needs and also ensures any contract to purchase protects you. With such an important decision, expert guidance is a crucial element. 3. Mortgage Application Process: Once you have found a home and signed a contract to purchase, you contact our team. We will ask for your income and down payment confirmation, as well as any other information required to complete the mortgage application (if not already done at the pre-approval stage.)

4. Subject Removal: Subject removal happens once you have received confirmation that your mortgage is unconditionally approved. Your realtor and our team will walk you through this process. 5. Legal Documentation: At this stage, your realtor and our office will arrange for documentation to be send to your lawyer or notary. Usually the lawyer/notary will call you one to two weeks before closing to make an appointment for you to sign the mortgage and title transfer documents. As your personal mortgage consulting team, we will simplify the entire process of mortgage financing: we represent your best interest, aggressively negotiate with the banks for the best mortgage rates, do the paperwork, and ultimately, provide you with the best possible solution. Environment Minister Mary Polak released our government’s detailed proposal for a new Water Sustainability Act and asked British Columbians for their thoughts. We’ve developed the proposal for the new Water Sustainability Act based upon what we’ve heard; and, as promised, we’re engaging British Columbians again before introducing the final legislation. Later this month, Premier Christy Clark will lead a trade mission to China, Korea and Japan. This is a crucial part of British Columbia’s strategy to diversify our international trading partners and to secure new investment, propelling the economic activity and job creation throughout our province. The strategy aims at strengthening bilateral relations with government partners; promoting B.C.’s competitive advantages during corporate meetings with key investors in LNG and other priority sectors; and capitalizing on B.C.’s cultural bridge across the Pacific with networking events built around B.C.’s family, economic and educational connections to Asia. As you can see, our government is focused on growing B.C.’s economy, bringing labour peace to our schools and working with B.C.’s private sector labour leaders to build an LNG industry right here in B.C.
