Apocalypse Theatre This isn’t War of the Worlds, Orson Wells’ radio drama about an alien invasion that some people took way too seriously 75 years ago. Nor is it (quite) Leonard C. Lewin’s story on war, Report From Iron Mountain, that the Guiness Book of Records called “the most successful literary hoax” of all time.

WHO WE ARE

Instead, this is how Pi Theatre and Horseshoes and Hand Grenades Theatre describes their premiere of Sean Devine’s new play, Except in the Unlikely Event of War:

“A summit of minds in a secret military base. A radio broadcast from the brink of arctic war. A group of actors under government muzzle. This darkly comic, distinctly Canadian work is a probing exploration of art, politics, war, and the messy areas where they become indistinguishable.” Starring Robert Moloney, Josette Jorge, Sean Devine and Lucia Frangione, and directed by Richard Wolfe, it runs at the Roundhouse Community Centre until November 30. Tickets are $16 for matinees, $25 for evening performances. Go to PiTheatre.com or call 604-872-1861. Photo supplied

Enjoy a performance by songstress Amanda Wood, shopping specials, giveaways, cosmetic demonstrations, REDDOT cocktails, and a Holt Renfrew fashion showcase (with a portion of the proceeds benefitting the rapid access breast clinic). Super Nanny If you’re longing for the carefree days of your bygone youth — or seeking family-friendly activities for the holidays — Mary Poppins is standing by with a spoonful of sugar and 2.5 hours of theatrical magic. The stage version of P.L. Travers’ tales about a “practically perfect” umbrella-wielding nanny with a bottomless bag and a penchant for straight talk is as delightful as the iconic Julie Andrews film. As Mary, Sara-Jeanne Hosie is the embodiment of charm and grit (her showdown with Katey Wright’s vile Miss Andrew is epic and spine-tingling). Hosie’s chemistry with each member of the talented ensemble (like Scott Walters, pictured)— and the ease with which she navigates the stunts and many difficult but essential prop tricks — combine to make you believe that you’re witnessing the exploits of a real-life Mary Poppins herself.

h, sweet Marie. If you thought that Salt Tasting Room had a buzz to it when filled with diners, just wait until you experience what happens when Erin Heather pulls up in front of the West Broadway restaurant and five children, one mother, one grandmother and one nanny pour out of the minivan and rush into the latest Heather Hospitality Group incarnation. It’s chaos — joyous, loud, frenzied, wouldn’thave-it-any-other-way chaos. There’s 10-year-old Sean, the preternaturally calm and helpful oldest child. Then there’s the lively and talkative Orla, seven. Five-year-old Ronan has the unenviable task of being the middle child while three-year-old Saoirse (pronounced Seer-sha and Gaelic for freedom) is exploring the exciting world between precocious toddler and kindergarten student. Baby Brian, at 13 months old, just smiles as he takes it all in (including anything he can get his hands on.) “Oh, sweet Marie,” Erin says as she does a head count for the photo and realizes that Ronan has disappeared. She sounds exasperated but there’s a discernable smile in her voice and, as she rolls her eyes heavenward, you can catch a glint of laughter. There may be times when the task of raising five children and running seven restaurants with her husband Sean seems an act of sheer lunacy, but it’s obvious that the two of them are not only coping, but thriving. “It’s fantastic and a horror show in equal doses,” says Sean. “We have an amazing capacity to absorb punishment.” Sean and Erin are very much a team as parents, a couple and fully contributing partners in Heather Hospitality Group. When he’s at the restaurants during the day after dropping the kids off at school or daycare, she’s on full mommy duty and, thanks to a nanny who works five days a week, also does all the bookkeeping and payroll for 100+ staff. He spends every Sunday cooking not only that night’s dinner, but the foundation for every night’s dinner that week — a roast of beef, roast pork, three racks of ribs and a stew, for instance. He’s

Rob Newell photo home every night to cook dinner and then, when he gets the kids ready for bed, Erin does her rounds of the restaurants, keeping an eye on what’s good, what’s bad and what can be made better. “It may sound trite,” Sean says of how they manage to pull it all off, “but Erin and I are our best friends. We dig each other still and if we have to be with anyone, it’s with each other.” If there’s one value they’re passing on to their children it’s this: success comes to those who work for it.

Beginnings Sean’s mother is from Burgeo, Newfoundland and his dad is from Dublin. He was born in Toronto, one of three children, but “when I was four, my

an interest in sports. In 1998, Sean had enough money to open The Irish Heather in Gastown. Keeping him company was the Blarney Stone, Characters, the Spaghetti Factory and Water Street Café. “We opened the doors and a week later I said ‘What have we done?’” Drug dealers were on his front door and there was yet to be the critical mass of restaurants and pubs to turn the gritty neighbourhood into a destination for Vancouver’s hungry foodies. “It was a real eye opener but I wasn’t walking away from it. We had to make it work.” Work it did, and so did Sean. One day a young Irish dancer named Erin Hickey walked into the Irish Heather. He’d heard of her, she’d heard of him and it didn’t take long for them to start dating. A year after they met, they were married. “When you know, you know,” Sean says. They had six years of growing the business together before their own family started to grow. She’d work front of house while he was behind the bar. Shebeen Whisk(e)y House was the first addition followed by Salty Tongue Café (which became the Salt Tasting Room in both Gastown and Kits), Fetch Kiosk, Judas Goat (which was handed over as a new enterprise earlier this year), Bitter Tasting Room and Rainier Provisions. “It was bootcamp for having children,” Sean says of how he and Erin learned how to juggle stresses and responsibilities as the business group. Erin also tapped into everything she’d learned as a competitive Irish dancer who travelled the world as a Canadian champion. Sean notes that the company grew organically, starting each new venture only when they’d saved enough money. “It’s not enough to offer a good product at good prices because a lot of people are doing that,” he says. “You have to create something that’s a bit unusual.” It won’t be surprising if their children one day join them (as long as they’re not scared off by how hard their parents work.) The oldest is already talking about opening his own restaurant.

dad decided he didn’t want children with Canadian accents. We upped sticks and moved to Dublin.” The family soon relocated to Limerick. In the summer, they’d visit with paternal grandparents who were concierges at a private residence in London’s well-heeled Knightsbridge. But it was a working visit. Sean’s grandmother would soon have tasks for them to do. After working in restaurants during his university years, Sean thought he wanted to try something new and got a job at Ryan Air. He soon found himself back into the food business by working in the airline’s catering department, making sure, for instance, that the Rolling Stones got their two bottles of Jim Beam for every leg of the flight. His dream was to work for Alice Waters at Chez Panisse but since he had Canadian citizenship but no green card, he found San Francisco on a map, worked his finger up the coast to the first Canadian city and landed on Vancouver. He arrived with $50 in his pocket and a month’s free rent at his sister’s. He got a graveyard shift job at Benny’s Bagels, just a few doors down from where the Kitsilano version of Salt Tasting Room is today, having no idea what a bagel was. Within two weeks he was the night shift’s manager and within nine months he was general manager. After four years, he left to work at Adam Busby’s restaurants (Cascabel, Star Anise) by day and Culinary Capers Catering at night. “Hello, my name is Sean and I’m a workoholic,” he says when describing what has become a normal pace for him. He soon decided that “If you’re going to work like a dog you might as well work for yourself.” As a member of the Irish diaspora, he missed having a pub where he could go for a good pint and good conversation. He was shocked when he went into a Vancouver bar and tried to strike up a conversation with the bartender. Asking who was winning the game playing on the television behind the bar, the bartender’s answer was to mutely point up to the screen. In Ireland, the bartender would not only engage in a debate about the team but introduce Sean to someone else at the bar who had

news AirCare defenders hope for reprieve Metro Vancouver directors will again urge the provincial government to continue the AirCare program, which is slated to be dismantled at the end of 2014. They voted at Thursday’s environment and parks committee meeting to draw up a new staff report that may offer up fresh ammunition for preserving the tailpipe emission testing stations that force heavily polluting vehicles to get fixed. “Whenever you go to a municipality or anyplace that doesn’t have AirCare you see vehicles with billowing smoke coming out, “ Pitt Meadows Mayor Deb Walters said. Metro voted three years ago to support extending AirCare until at least 2020, but that was rejected last year by the provincial government. Vancouver Coun. Heather Deal, who chairs the committee, said she strongly supports maintaining AirCare because modern cars, despite improved pollution controls, can still have emission failures. As of 2010, the failure rate at AirCare was 22.3 per cent for pre-1995 vehicles and 7.4 per cent for 1995-2003 vehicles (newer models are exempt from testing.) Owners of older vehicles must pay $46 every two years for testing but lower fees are expected in the final year of the program. The provincial government says air pollution from cars has declined as technology improves and the mandatory tests no longer provide the benefit they once did. Also campaigning to keep AIrCare — and its 110 union jobs — are officials with the B.C. Government and Service Employees Union. A BCGEU-led report warns there could be significant backsliding as old vehicles are put back on the road and motorists neglect their cars’ emission controls or even disable them to improve performance. AirCare is run by TransLink but the $17.5-million annual cost of running testing centres is entirely borne by motorists through fees, so killing the program would not save TransLink or the government any money. Metro is also continuing to push for an AirCare-like program to target heavy trucks.

Syphillis at ‘epidemic’ levels Public health officials are launching a new campaign to warn gay and bisexual men of a major jump in syphillis infections in the Lower Mainland. There were 371 cases of the sexually transmitted disease reported in BC in 2012 — the highest level seen in 30 years. “Syphilis rates are at epidemic proportions in the Lower Mainland,” said Dr. Réka Gustafson, a medical health officer for Vancouver Coastal Health. The highly contagious disease can be spread through any sexual activity, but Gustafson said most of the cases being seen are in gay or bisexual men. If left untreated, syphillis can lead to permanent blindness, hearing loss and neurological problems, all of which can happen early or late in the course of infection. Severe cases can be fatal. The campaign, with a website at CheckHimOut. ca/syphillis, urges regular testing, healthier choices and symptom awareness. — Jeff Nagel

winter style & beauty

In the blink of an eye(brow) By Kelsey Klassen

T

hreading isn’t something you can learn in a few classes at beauty school. It’s a technique commonly practiced in countries such as Egypt and India and passed down through generations. But its growth in local popularity shouldn’t raise any eyebrows. Noticed a surge in runway ready, kapow brows in the past few years? The hirsute shes and hes were more than likely happy ambassadors of the art. And Vancouverites are gravitating to threading for reasons that have very little to do with trends. Firstly, threading is extremely sanitary; nothing but a clean thread touches the skin. Then, for people with straggly brows who struggle to achieve evenness, the thread can be targeted down to a single stray hair. And with the harsh airs of winter only just beginning their assault on our T-zones, it’s a gentle, chemicalfree alternative that is safe to use in circumstances (such as thin skin) where waxing is not. Lastly, it can be done in the time it takes to decide to go on that date tonight, and lasts long enough

Blink Brow Bar owner Kiran Darred puts the finishing tint on some newly threaded eyebrows. Essenin Quijadad photo for you to fall in love (about a month). Blink Brow Bar at 577 Bute (BlinkBrowBar.ca) has some of the most experienced threaders in the city. While the upper lip, face and chin can all be in the crosshairs, we’re talking eyebrows today with owner Kiran Darred. With 17 years of experience in threading and esthetics, she walks us through what to expect your first time: • The brow area is cleaned and prepped with a sanitizing wipe.

• Your technician discusses the brow options available to you, and then the shape is measured and defined on your existing brow with white pencil. • When you’re happy with the shape, threading begins. Your technician will define your brow to the chosen shape, using a cotton thread pulled along unwanted hair in a twisting motion. • After threading, some trimming and grooming perfects the shape. • Then you’re treated to a relaxing aloe or rose water oil massage that

soothes the skin and eases any redness that has arisen. • Finally, a light brow makeup or tint is applied to enhance the finished look. Rates: Eyebrows (plus makeup and massage), $21; Brow tint, $19. Any time Kate Moss’ naked body is in front of you, you’re bound to look. But give yourself an excuse to stare at your own buff bod this winter with the selftanner that gives Kate her glow. St. Tropez’s best-selling, velvety Bronzing Mousse is a seriously advanced self tanner. Here’s the how-to: Exfoliate with St. Tropez Body Polish before you apply, especially concentrating on the hands, feet, elbows and knees. Touch up with the polish five days after the mousse has been applied to keeps the tan from looking patchy as it begins to wear off. Next, moisturize the same areas. Applying a moisturizer, such as St. Tropez Body Moisturizer, will prevent these dry areas from being darker than others. Moisturize daily for a longer lasting tan. Then use the St. Tropez applicator mitt to sweep on a streak-free, no-mess natural-looking tan. The guide color will show you if you have missed any spots and your assets will be bronzed for about a week afterward. s your skin flaking out faster than a Vancouverite on a rainy Friday night? Well then you’ve got a date with ZenMed. TotalBeauty.com, the web’s top destination for beauty advice and product reviews, has just named the BC-based skincare company for its ‘10 Best At-Home Microdermabrasion Products’ round up. The list highlights which facial skin care products leave even sensitive skin soft, clearer and with fewer wrinkles, and the feedback is hard to ignore. ZenMed’s Renewing Microdermabrasion Complex, with its reputation for rejuvenating dull, flaky skin, came in with an 8.6 product rating from TotalBeauty.com members, with TotalBeauty.com editors adding that the product clears up “all kinds of imperfections from acne scars to pigmentation issues.” The exfoliating complex should be used between three to five

times a week to wash away the top layer of dead, dull skin to reveal the luminescent you underneath. “It really does clear up the marks,” said one TotalBeauty. com user about her acne scars. “I don’t have to wear makeup now if I don’t want to.” Another reader added, “I had weird coloring in my skin. ZenMed got rid of the coloring and evened out the tone, making my face look way better.” “We are thrilled to be included in a beauty bible such as TotalBeauty.com,” said ZenMed president and founder Robert Kemp in a release. “The honor of having our product rated so highly is reflective of our dedication to quality products with a conscience, while hearing such positive feedback from their readers is an indication that consumers are craving Pictured: ZenMed’s Renatural, effective skin care newing Microdermabraalternatives on their shelves.” Additional product info at ZenMed.com.

anta can now do his personal shopping at Secret Location, thanks to their addition of menswear labels such as Comedie Humaine and Norwegian Rain (tailored raincoats; perfect for staying dapper and dry on Dec. 24). Then, he can pick up some-

thing beautiful for Mrs. Claus in the new beauty section. She might like Quintessence Paris’ interior fragrance line inspired by the “noses” of perfume pioneers; Belmancz Beauty’s 24 karat gold leaf lip glosses, eyeshadows and pearl powders; Popup diamond candles (one in every 50 has a

.25 karat diamond in it); or James Read bronzing spray, used by Lady Gaga, Ellie Goulding and the like. And the kitchen side of Secret Location is cooking up something a little more special than milk and cookies in the weeks to come. Try Fallen Leaves for a little sip of Christmas. — Kelsey Klassen

Candytown S anta may be known for his penchant for cookies and milk on Christmas Eve, but judging by his girth, this man loves his food all year ‘round. That’s probably why he accepted the Yaletown Business Improvement Association’s invitation to drop by the restaurant-laden neighbourhood on November 23 (YaletownInfo.com). From noon to 9pm that day, Yaletown is transforming itself into CandyTown, a free outdoor Christmas festival. Drawing on a candy theme, the

merchants are creating a day for young families and adults of all ages to get in the holiday spirit. Festivities include: • visiting Santa at the North Pole from 1pm to 6pm. • 15-minute horse-drawn carriage ride from the Yaletown Brewing Company station. • crafts, face painting and balloon twisting at the Starlight Children’s Foundation tent. • ice sculpture in the making at Bill Curtis Square from 2pm to 7pm. • photo ops with roaming street

“As downtown’s only free winter festival, CandyTown is for anyone with a sweet tooth, a hankering for shopping or someone who just wants to come and play outside,” says Annette O’Shea, the BIA’s executive director. “It’s a great place to have some fun, and support the many charities that need help at Christmas. Where else can you enjoy a CandyTown cocktail and a free horse-drawn carriage ride?” Attendees are invited to donate to the BC Children’s Hospital, Vancouver Food Bank and Starlight Children’s Foundation. The Donnelly Group returns with its charity toy drive tent and will make a donation on behalf of The Donnelly Foundation. 3H Craftworks joins in on the spirit by offering a by-donation gift wrapping station and holiday gift bags available for purchase.

T

he characters that Jill Morrison typically portrays on film and television are likely too naughty to warrant a spot on Santa’s gift list. But being naughty has its perks — like global fame. The Vancouver-based actress is known around the world for the “she doesn’t even go here” line she delivered in the 2004 cult classic, Mean Girls (a clip of her performance has clocked more than 1.7 million views on YouTube). Nearly a decade after Mean Girls, the convivial Morrison is still reveling in sassy roles. This year, she graced VIFF screens in the award-winning teen

dance mockumentary Leap 4 Your Life, and currently recurs as leopard-print-clad Nikki on Citytv’s four-camera sitcom Package Deal. “[Nikki]’s very sarcastic, very snarky, says whatever she wants, and crosses every line,” said Morrison during a recent phone chat. “She’s so fun.” In January, audiences will see yet another facet of Morrison when she appears on Hallmark’s When Calls the Heart, a dramatic piece set in 1910. But before When Calls the Heart, there’s Christmas. While Morrison’s excited to grab a latte and shop for her sisters and nephews on Robson Street, she’s also got a Christmas list of her own. So, what does a funny girl want for Christmas?

Home is where the shopping is... WE’s Sabrina Furminger keeps it local in Vancouver-centric Christmas list

E

ver since my daughter was born a few years back, my primary venue for gift shopping has been the World Wide Web; the 24/7 nature of online retail suits the sleep-deprived lifestyle of many a new parent. But now that my daughter is older and I’m actually able to venture out the door to shop for my loved ones, I steer clear of the internet and remain firmly rooted in Vancouver. Below are my top picks for gifts I’ll be giving that are created right here in the 604 — or benefit organizations doing good work in our community: Dignity “Purefume” Since 2000, Vancouver’s Beauty Night Society has provided 36,000 makeovers to women in need — and Smell This! Aromatherapy is supporting this fearless organization with the aptly named Dignity cologne (created with input from Beauty Night’s founder, Caroline MacGillivray). The alcohol-free, plant-based “purefume” contains energizing notes of lemongrass, peppermint, ylang ylang, rosewood and vanilla. $10 from every purchase benefits Beauty Night Society and the women it serves. $20 at SmellThis.ca. Hand-crafted talisman jewelry One of my favourite gifts to myself this

year was my Writer talisman pendant from Pyrrha featuring a hand grasping a quill pen. I love the imperfection of the piece, the fact that it was cast in a Mount Pleasant studio using an antique wax seal, and my personal connection to the subject matter. This year, I’m going to spread the Pyrrha joy and hand out necklaces that I hope will be meaningful to each of the recipients. Starting at $114. Pyrrha.com. Olive oil Forget wine and fancy cheese: olive oil is my go-to hostess gift for the 2013 holiday season. No one in the city knows more about olive oil than the fine folks behind the Vancouver Olive Oil Company. Their Kitsilano location — part tasting room, part retail space — is the perfect place to wade into the world of flavoured and single cultivar olive oils and build an appreciation for aged balsamic vinegars. 2571 West Broadway. Cutting boards Just because an item is practical doesn’t mean it can’t be a work of art. Local carpenter Kate Duncan’s walnut and maple cutting boards are functional (I love the handles) while also adding a stylish flair to any kitchen. Available in a range of

sizes. $75 - $195 Parliament Interiors (115 Water St), Homewerx (1053 Davie), Atkinson’s (1501 West 6th), andKateDuncan.ca. Amanda Tapping by Dennys Ilic Sci-fi icon Amanda Tapping is a dynamic beauty inside and out — and this limited edition book of images by celebrity photographer Dennys Ilic captures Tapping’s picture-perfect elegance, vulnerability, character, and grace. And how’s this for beauty: proceeds go to Tapping’s Vancouver-based, globe-spanning charity Sanctuary for Kids, which locally aids homeless youth in need through Watari. AmandaTappingBook.com.

Sabrina Furminger’s friends are going to receive the Amanda Tapping photography book by Dennys Ilic (above) and Kate Duncan’s walnut cutting board (below).

Cooking classes For the people in my life who buy what they want whenever they want it (hi, Mom and Dad), I lean toward experiential gifts. This year, I’m registering my parents for a couples’ cooking class at the Dirty Apron Cooking School (540 Beatty) where they’ll prepare a sexy three-course meal and whip up some new memories. $158 per person at DirtyApron.com.

ew species are as graceful, agile, and intelligent as the horse — and in Cavalia’s Odysseo, audiences are treated to a dazzling display of equine versatility. In the touring extravaganza — which invites audiences into its White Big Top in the Olympic Village beginning December 7 — the spotlight is on the enduring majesty and rippling musculature of the horse. It’s difficult not to sit awestruck as dozens of horses gallop through the custom-built mega-tent, or read traits like bravery, playfulness and wisdom in their whinnies and seemingly effortlessly executed choreographed movements. Equally compelling is the interaction between the 63 horses and the 47 on-stage humans; the riders, acrobats and other performers seem to be able to read the horses’ minds (and vice versa). It’s a wholly intoxicating theatrical spectacle that first wowed Vancouver audiences in 2011 – and it’s one for which the demand was so great that organizers quickly added 13 shows after announcing the dates for the upcoming run. Audiences aren’t alone in their passion for Cavalia. It’s a source of ongoing delight for the performers, too. Among them: Michel Charron and Tomoko Onishi. The married duo met in Japan (Onishi’s country of birth; Charron is a Canuck from New Brunswick), attended circus school together in the UK, and toured an aerial acrobatics show through Japan until the earthquake and tsunami of 2011 — at which point, they fled Asia, touched down in Mon-

treal, and their Cavalia journey began. To date, they’ve performed in more than 200 performances with Cavalia. In Odysseo, they can even be glimpsed together: as one of three acrobatic couples performing on a 16,000-pound merrygo-round that descends from the overhead grid (they’re also in the same hoop act). “It’s a thrill,” said Charron on the phone from Washington, DC, where Odysseo was wrapping a recent run. “You get to be onstage with your wife. It doesn’t get much better than that.” Equally thrilling to both is the opportunity to work with horses. The horses are more than animals to the human performers; they’re complex, charismatic colleagues, each with their own personality and set of quirks. “It’s such a unique experience working with each horse,” said Charron. “They’re the stars of the show and I’m happy to be there supporting them.” His favourite moment with the horses occurs early in the show, when man and horse run together in liberty (without harnesses). “When we let out this primitive scream and we all start running together, it’s really an awesome moment,” said Charron. Charron and Onishi’s is a love story built on acrobats, mutual admiration, and adventure. They both speak highly of the others’ abilities, and of the hiking, camping, rock-climbing, and other adventures they have as they drive between tour stops (“I don’t want to miss seeing the most beautiful parts of the world,” said Onishi). Despite the fact that they’ve spent more than a decade working and living together, they’re not looking to work separate gigs anytime soon. “You look into your partner’s eyes, and you smile, and it’s genuine,” said Charron. “You’re there with the person you love, and that is a major plus.” Cavalia’s Odysseo runs until January 5. Five favourite gluten-free grains By Rich Ralph, Fitness Goop

C

eliac Disease and gluten sensitivity affects more people today in North America than ever before. There are several theories about why this may be happening, but I will save that subject for another day. I believe that the hybridization of wheat over the last 70 years has resulted in a grain with higher levels of gluten (some have suggested that wheat today has 50 times more gluten than it did 100 years ago). Gluten is a very sticky protein and is difficult for anyone to digest properly, whether you have Celiac Disease or not. There are many excellent alter-

natives to wheat and I want to share my five favourite gluten-free grains.

AMARANTH This grain may be small, but

it’s powerful. My favorite use of amaranth is to pop it like popcorn for a deliciously nuttyflavoured snack. Since it’s full of minerals, vitamins and amino acids, health experts have indicated that it may help reduce cholesterol, lower blood pressure, improve immune system function and even prevent the premature greying of hair.

MILLET This is a fantastic grain that can be boiled and mashed like potatoes, or fluffed like rice. Not only does millet contain 18 different amino acids, but it also holds a significant amount of vitamins and minerals, such as magnesium, phosphorus and manganese. It has been suggested to have cardiovascular and

heart protection properties, gallstone prevention traits, and offers a reduction in risk of childhood asthma.

BLACK RICE This rice is considered to be

the new kid on the block. In recent years, it has been haled as a superfood by many due to it’s high nutrient values. Black rice is loaded with amino acids, fiber, vitamins and minerals. Claims have been made that black rice may help reduce blood pressure, alleviate arthritic symptoms and lower your risk of cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer’s Disease.

BUCKWHEAT Containing over 11 amino acids in substantial amounts, as well as vitamins, minerals and even trace amounts of essential fatty acids make buckwheat a glutenfree superstar. Helping to control blood sugar and lower the risk of diabetes are just a couple

health & wellness benefits of buckwheat. This grain (although technically not a grain) is easy to prepare and very versatile. My favourite buckwheat dish right now is a fresh tabouleh salad.

QUINOA My favorite grain for the last

several years, it comes in a range of colours, including red, white and black. Red is my preferred variety. This is one of the easiest grains to prepare and one of the most nutrient-dense. Quinoa has a plethora of nutritious features, such as fiber, vitamins and minerals. It could even be considered a complete protein since it contains all essential amino acids. There have been many suggested health benefits, including migraine relief, cancer risk reduction and cardiovascular protection/prevention.

Correction Notice Our recent advertisement in the WE Vancouver on November 15, 2013 contained language that is accurate in Alberta but not accurate in B.C. The ad claims that graduation from the City University of Seattle, Master of Counselling program prepares students for a career as a “Registered Psychologist”. This is not the case in B.C. The B.C. program prepares graduates for “Registration as a Clinical Counsellor”. Our apologies for any confusion that this may have caused.

How to love the later years Earl Bergen, General Manager Cedar Springs Retirement Residence

Moving into a residence can be very unsettling for aging adults. Typically, they greatly fear losing their independence. Interestingly enough, through retirement communities that offer ‘independent living’, residents actually regain their independence along with more freedom. It comes from being relieved of the burdens of cooking and housekeeping, yardwork and upkeep. Suddenly, they rediscover a precious commodity: time! They then have more opportunity to build new friendships, learn a new skill, pursue a hobby or embrace a new fitness regime. All these endeavours contribute to their happiness and well-being. It’s a well-known fact that physical, mental and social stimulation result in improved health and longevity. Numerous studies have been conducted that demonstrate the positive and longterm effects. WEVancouver.com

I’ve seen it many times over myself, here at our residence. Having choice, and a lot of it, is important for the state of mind in adults at retirement communities. When residents have access to numerous activities, the choice to engage socially or not, choice in meals and in how to spend any given day, they experience a stronger feeling of independence and ability. All in all, independent living creates healthier, more engaged adults who are not focused on aging, but focused on living. Need a question answered about independent living? Decorating and dazzling your home for the holidays By Kerry Vital

Holiday decorations are multiplying in the malls and Christmas carols are already playing on the radio. Festive parties are being planned, and it’s time to start considering how you’ll be decorating your home. If you’re looking for inspiration, the West Coast Christmas Show at Abbotsford’s Tradex will offer plenty of it. As one of

NEW HOME DEVELOPMENT

Western Canada’s largest holiday season shows, it won’t be hard to find what you’re looking for and maybe learn some new tricks for making your home sparkle. One of the biggest trends in holiday decor this year is nontraditional colours. “Everyone knows of the classic Christmas colours: red, green, gold,” says Sarah McNeil, designer at Fluff Design & Decor. “This year, we’re going to show you some new ideas.” Fluff Design & Decor is one of the main stage presenters at this year’s show. “You need to keep it simple,” says McNeil. “Everyone

has seen a house where ... it looks overdone. Less is more.” “Everyone is so busy during the holiday season and it’s easy to get overwhelmed or go overboard,” says Leanne Droder of Clayfun Creations. “For years I went crazy decorating for Christmas and it would stress me out if I didn’t get it all done, ... Once I started concentrating on the things that meant the most to me or I truly loved, then decorating became something to look forward to again.” Flowers are always an integral part of any holiday display, whether it’s a poinsettia or a contemporary table centrepiece. “When you’re looking for a poinsettia, make sure it has a nice, deep, rich colour and lots of leaves,” says Tony Hui of 99 Nursery and Florist. “The leaves should be dark green. If the leaves are yellow and the berries fall off, that’s a stressed plant.” The West Coast Christmas Show takes place from Nov. 22 to Nov. 24. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.westcoastchristmasshow.com.

Adding up the perfect little details at Regan’s Walk By Kerry Vital

Marcon is bringing its signature style to West Coquitlam with Regan’s Walk, a condominium development that offers a lot more than just beautiful homes. “Marcon is always aiming for perfection,” says sales manager Celia Chiu. “You can definitely see the difference in a Marcon home.” Regan’s Walk showcases plenty of that perfection.

“It’s all the little details,” says Chiu. “I’ve never seen any other developer pay so much attention to details.” Among those little details are a motionsensor light underneath the bathroom vanity that allows you to illuminate the space just enough to be able to see what you’re doing without having to turn on the overhead lights; something especially convenient at night. Another particularly special detail that Chiu notes are the USB charging stations in most homes that are integrated seamlessly into the kitchen and bedroom. “These kind of things go a long way,” says Chiu. “It really demonstrates the quality of these homes.” Nine-foot ceilings and huge windows contribute to the open, airy feel of the homes. Buyers are able to choose between two colour schemes, Grey and Natural, giving you the ability to make your place fit your personal

style just a bit more. Wide-plank laminate flooring throughout the main living areas and modern scrolled level-loop nylon carpeting throughout the bedrooms give you that extra touch of elegance. Other quality finishings include stainlesssteel appliances in the kitchen, complemented by the modern thermafoil cabinetry, with Shaker uppers in Euro White and eased edge square-profile lowers in either Covaren Crystal or Miltown Oak, and solid quartz countertops. The bathrooms feature their own solid quartz countertops, along with Euro White Shaker cabinetry, a deep soaker tub and convenient vanities. You’ll also find a steelframed mirror with brushed steel accent light bar and a full-height tile tub and shower surround. The 71 one-, two- and three-bedroom homes are available in a wide range of

floorplans encompassing approximately 629 to over 1,000 square feet. Generous patios and terraces extend your living space outside, and select ground-level homes include a street entry gate for added convenience. Meanwhile, some of the south-facing third- and fourthfloor homes feature stunning views. Homeowners will have access to an outdoor amenity space, including a children’s play area. You’ll find the future Evergreen Line just three minutes away, as well as shopping, dining, education and recreation opportunities within easy walking distance. “This neighbourhood is definitely growing,” says Chiu. “Regan’s Walk is immersed in this emerging little city.” Buyers will be able to take possession of their new home in mid-2015. Available homes at Regan’s Walk start at $229,900. For more information, visit www.reganswalk.ca, call 604-492-0222 or stop by the sales centre, located at Burquitlam Plaza, 408-522 Clarke Road, Coquitlam, open daily (except Fridays) between noon and 5 p.m.

movies

WWII gets Hallmark treatment THE BOOK THIEF Starring Sophie Nelisse, Geoffrey Rush Directed by Brian Percival Markus Zusak’s bestselling novel The Book Thief gets the Hallmark treatment for its big screen adaptation, but is thankfully held together by compelling acting and gorgeous cinematography. The story begins with young Liesel (Monsieur Lazhar’s Sophie Nelisse) being sent to live with a foster family (Geoffrey Rush and Emily Watson) in WWII Germany. The girl soon finds solace amidst the growing tension by stealing books and sharing them with friends, including a Jewish refugee being sheltered in the home’s basement. The film serves up several strong performances; Nelisse is an incredible young talent, Watson plays against type as the brash wife and Rush churns out another charismatic turn as the endearing Hans. The acting, coupled with a stirring score from

veteran composer John Williams, and the crisp lighting by Florian Ballhaus certainly make for a pleasing viewing experience. However, The Book Thief’s sanitized view of Nazi Germany and overbearing sentimentality impede the movie from attaining something more than a superficial historical account. Characters seemingly face constant peril as the plot escalates but the hostile Thor Diakow forces are never more than derivative caricatures of generic Nazi soldiers. Director Brian Percival somehow manages to keep the film’s integrity intact as the grim narration by the character of ‘Death’ himself anchors the themes, while still remaining appropriate viewing for children. The Book Thief’s unique perspective and narrative, combined with some touching performances give the film some vibrancy but it feels like a missed opportunity; the intentions are clearly earnest but a little too simplistic.

THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE Starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson Directed by Francis Lawrence One of the fundamentals of world-building in sci-fi storytelling is that, once you’ve established the rules of your speculative reality, you must abide by them. As scripted and directed by Gary Ross, 2012’s The Hunger Games (adapted from Suzanne Collins’ wildly popular young adult novel) aggravatingly felt as if it was constantly rewriting its dystopian future’s rules right through the closing credits. Consequently, there’s some satisfaction in seeing that film’s outcome — combatants Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) both prevailing in a televised battle royale that was to have only one winner/survivor — being derided as

a “fiasco” in this follow-up. Even more rewarding is seeing the franchise raise its game by enlisting Oscar-winning screenwriters Michael Arndt and Simon Beaufoy. Their combined efforts ensure a more structurally sound and emotionally involving film that expands the story’s scope. Rather impressively, the film lambastes the manipulative power of media while simultaneously pushing all the right buttons, uncovering the ideal combination for top-flight escapist entertainment. This edition of The Hunger Games leaves you with something to chew on. — Curtis Woloschuk Read Curtis’ review of Delivery Men online at WEVancouver.com.

Charitable organizations throughout our region rely on the proceeds to help some of our most vulnerable citizens during the coldest period of the year. This annual eight-day event, from November 18 – 25, collects gently used blankets, sleeping bags, warm clothing and jackets, in addition to new socks and underwear, to help protect about 20,000 vulnerable people in our region from the cold, wet winter. Hundreds of real estate offices turn into donation depots as REALTORS® collect, sort and deliver donations for distribution to dozens of local charities. Donations stay within the communities in which they are donated or, if the volumes are too large, go to charities in greatest need in neighbouring communities. People, wake up. Where has any densification increases improved an already comfortably dense neighbourhood? Where has any significant amount of it been designated affordable rental housing? Look at the Olympic Village sham. Now under 50 rental units? The once promised subsidized Woodward’s building where it was switched to market housing at the eleventh hour? And now the token handful of rental units hastily ‘tacked on’ to the completely inappropriate Alexandra building near the western end of Davie is an eyesore we have to live with forever. City Council: please consider densifying somewhere that downtown isn’t already dense, and think about the infrastructure and movement of goods and people while you’re at it. So far what you’re doing isn’t working. Except for the developers of course. Welcome to Vancouver:

Re: Last week’s ranter who said that bikers aren’t using the cycle lanes on Comox on account of the leaves. Most of the very few bikes I see on Comox don’t use the designated lane anyway, underlining what a ridiculous waste of money all those “upgrades” were. And in regard to Green Gregor’s bike rental scheme, the delay and financial problems of Bixi (the bike providers) is giving us the perfect opportunity to ditch this scheme which will a) undoubtedly cost the taxpayer even more to support Vision’s flawed green agenda, while b) putting at risk the plentiful bike-rental businesses which are already providing a perfectly good service at no cost to the taxpayer. Rather than sit in comfortable meeting rooms and instigating impractical, costly and politically correct green policies, someone at City Hall should actually get out once in a while and see exactly what’s going on out here. This holiday season, Beaucoup Bakery owner Jackie Kai Ellis is showcasing holiday traditions of the ooey-gooey, baked goods variety. Rob Newell photo

A season of festive treats By Martha Perkins

ven before she opened Beaucoup Bakery, Jackie Kai Ellis’s Christmas was a flurry of baking. Her gift to family and friends was always a collection of homemade cookies and treats. As the years passed, she was always sure to include everyone’s favourites. Her Auntie Christina, for instance, loved her parmesan crisps and candied marcona almonds; sister Heidi is “a shortbread fiend.” Now Ellis is introducing a new line of holiday traditions. Her 12 Days of Christmas includes the shortbread and almonds her family loves, but also chestnut finan-

ciers — “chestnuts in the winter are so Nat King Cole” —, gingerbread cake with red fruits jelly “to brighten up the spicyness”, butter tarts and a herbed brioche wreath that makes a beautiful centrepiece. There are also her house-made syrups, vanilla or salted caramel, that can be added to holiday drinks, and homemade jams to be spread on scones to be enjoyed with the Vietri mug and Bellocq tea set. Knowing customers are too busy to keep track of which of the 12 days it is, the offerings will available throughout the season. 2150 Fir | BeaucoupBakery.com

eat & drink Vancouver’s first nanobrewery increases capacity Bridge Brewing, located in North Vancouver, was Vancouver’s first nanobrewery. A typical microbrewery brews in 1,000- to 5,000-litre batches. A nanobrewery, on the other hand, brews batches smaller than 470 litres. And Bridge Brewing is no more...a nano. With their recent expansion, the 400-litre brewhouse is out the door, replaced with one that will enable them to brew 1,200 litres at a time. Leigh Stratton, co-founder and Director of Consumption, says that they plan to use the expanded capacity both to produce more of their existing popular recipes and to expand their range of beers. Their next seasonal, expected to be perfect and ready for sale at the brewery and better private beer stores, will be their winter beer “The Grinch.” — George Pajari

The slow sippers win the race By Martha Perkins

here’s something about drinking a glass of whisky that makes you want to sit back in a leather chair in front a fireplace and tell stories. Here’s a whisky one for you. In 1824, bootlegger George Smith decided to go legit. He was the first in Scotland’s Glenlivet Valley to get a licence, making him the enemy of all the other bootleggers who were angry that Smith had given the excise men — tax collectors — a reason to be in the neighbourhood. Smith took to packing two pistols with him on his travels. When the son who was to take over the distillery died, Smith called another son, John Gordon Smith, home to help. JG had his own battle, this time a seven-year legal one, over the name Glenlivet. Since Glenlivet was the name of a valley were lots of whisky was being made, lots of whiskies were named Glenlivet. Smith fought for, and won, the legal right to be The Glenlivet. (There are benefits to having the law on your side.) JG’s great-nephew, the decorated First World War vet and world traveller, Captain Bill Smith Grant, became the next head of the company in 1921 and stayed with the company until his death in 1975. Smiths no longer own The Glenlivet, which was bought by the Chivas Bros., known for their blended whiskies. This story is being told by Keith Trusler, Glenlivet’s new scotch ambassador. The former bar manager at Blue Water Café, Trusler ties in the generational tale with Glenlivet’s search for its next offering. It has created three new whiskies: The Classic, named after George; The Revival, named

The Glenlivet’s new ambassador Keith Trusler. after John Gordon; and The Exotic, named after Smith. People are asked to sign up to become a Glenlivet Guardian, which gives them access to private tastings of the new “expressions” and the opportunity to vote on which one should be the next limited edition single malt. “This is the one winning the race,” says Trusler, holding up a glass of the more mature and subtle The Exotic. “It’s got lots going on.” Votes from around the world will be counted in early 2014. 10 years of gastro goodness in Gastown Follow Me Foodie by Mijune Pak

rom hipster to hip: for the last five years, Gastown has been the hot and happening neighbourhood in Vancouver. It is what Yaletown was in its prime, and while both areas cater to very different markets, there’s increasing instances of overlap. New restaurants want to be in Gastown and old restaurants are trying to stay here. The same goes with the people. It’s the heart of Vancouver culture, a site for gentrification, and home to some excellent eats. While Gastown has changed over the last 10 years, there are restaurants that set down stakes before the hype. They were there when the main appeal for tourists was the steam clock. Vancouver is not an easy place to open a restaurant, and it’s a milestone for any business to make 10 years let alone anyone in the restaurant business. While newcomers are welcome (depending on who you ask) and change is constant, let’s take a moment to reminisce about the restaurants that have been there since long before Gastown got cool.

Guu Otokomae Guu started with two restaurants in Vancouver. It now has six locations locally and another two in Toronto. The Gastown location opened in fall 2003 and it was embraced from day one. The Maguro with five-colour sauce (chopped tuna and avocado, wasabi, mango, cucumber, and yuzu pepper sauce with crispy wontons), Salmon with 7 Friends (wild sockeye salmon with miso and garlic sauce, natto, Japanese pickles, garlic chips and egg yolk served with roasted seaweed), and Nikuzyaga Croquette (panko breaded mashed potatoes with stewed beef and tonkatsu sauce) have been on the menu for 10 years and are only available at Guu Gastown. The fireplace in the restaurant is from the old Irish Heather and has been enjoyed by Heather patrons for 16 years. The Bangers & Mash, featuring handmade sausage by master butcher Drews Dreisen, garlic mash-potato and onion demi is the 16-year-old mainstay. Brioche Urban Eatery Italian chef and owner Eduardo remembers what business was like in Gastown when he first opened his little café in April 2003. Although rent has gone up, he’s still trying to provide Gastown locals with affordable meals at under $10 for lunch and $20 for dinner. His signature panini and Eggplant Parmesana, with eight layers of baked eggplant, have been on the menu since opening. His favourite is the Italian sausage, which he makes in-house and serves on house-baked focaccia, sourdough or baguette. Brioche.ca 401 West Cordova St.

Wines to warm you up City Cellar

washed away by cascading raspberry and cherry fruit, and maybe a splash of cassis. This is one of those velvety-textured soft reds that you’ll want to swaddle yourself in while simmering a stew on the stove.

by Kurtis Kolt

I

t’s been a long day. It’s pouring rain incessantly and there’s that chill-tothe-bone feeling in the air. Perhaps a car racing through a street-side puddle has splashed you. It’s already dark out, and the days are only getting shorter. You finally get home, soaked, and immediately ditch your work clothes and damp socks in favour of something dry, warm, soft and fuzzy. It’s at this exact moment you’ll want to slip into one of these: Blue Mountain 2012 Gamay Noir | Okanagan Falls, BC | $25-ish | Private Wine Stores There’s some comforting truffle and musk business on the nose here, only to be

Farnese 2012 Fantini Sangiovese | Daunia, Italy | $9.99 | BC Liquor Stores Those under-$10 gems are getting to be further and fewer-between in our market, but Farnese always saves the day. While this is indeed a Sangiovese, which is the hallmark grape of the Chianti region, this little number hails from the Daunia territory, just above the heel of Italy’s boot. Aromatics of currants and cloves build to stewed blueberries and dried herbs on the palate. The fruit is rich, but the texture’s soft here. I’d like a little more tannin to it, but at ten bucks a bottle I’m not gonna com-

plain. Order pizza and sink in. Serendipity 2010 Devil’s Advocate | Okanagan Valley, BC | $22.90 | BC Liquor Stores This good-value Bordeaux-style blend from Judy Kingston’s Naramata winery includes an extra splash of Syrah, which adds a little peppery flair to a wine reminiscent of dark chocolate bark; chock-full of dried blueberries, cherries, roasted almonds and more. Medium-bodied with a decent dose of tannin that’ll latch onto your favourite cut of steak quite well. Las Moras 2011 Reserve Tannat | San Juan, Argentina | $14.99 | BC Liquor Stores We don’t see a lot of the Tannat grape here in B.C. but that’s a pretty consistent thing around the globe. The grape hails

from the Madiran region of France and has found its claim to fame in Uruguay, but it’s not like our local shelves are overflowing with Uruguayan wine either. Alas, we head to Argentina to enjoy this dark and brooding cornucopia of dates, figs, chocolate, blackberry, raisins and cola. While that all sounds pretty intense, the wine manages to stay bright and buoyant, due to some good acidity and the flavours expressing themselves quite clean and pure. Pascual Toso 2011 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon | Mendoza, Argentina | $20.99 | BC Liquor Stores Wafting out of the glass like a perfect coffeehouse mocha, this killer Argentinian value expresses all of the classic Cabernet components; red currant, black currant, cigar box, cedar, a leaf or two of mint and perhaps a slice of freshlycarved roast beef. Boom! There’s your food pairing, as suggested by the wine itself. As always, if you’re having trouble finding something or just want to say hi, find me via KurtisKolt.com or on Twitter @KurtisKolt. arls restaurant is launching its first major foray into American cities in the past several years. As it prepares to open in Miami in March and Boston in May, it’s also giving Vancouver diners something new to explore now. This week it’s introducing several new features, including Hamid Salimian’s Cambodian Tempura Prawns. The former Diva at the Met executive chef (who’s now teaching at Vancouver Community College) has been consulting with Earls and his tempura prawns served with a sweet-and-spicy Kafir lime and Thai basil sauce over Napa cabbage will be part of the menu

starting November 20. He manages to tame several strong tastes, leaving them their individuality while telling them to play nice on the plate. The butcher’s cut steak, served family style with sides of Brussels sproats, warm potato salad and onion rings makes an already favourite dish even more appealing for comfort food seekers. Beverage director Cam Bogue turned to the first published bartender, Gerry Thomas, for inspiration for his new offering, a seasonal mix of spiced butter, Captain Morgan rum, Bailey’s, hot water and whipped cream makes you think you’re warming up by a nice fire after a day of skiing. Have it with the warm gingerbread cake topped with Mario’s vanilla gelato and caramel sauce and it’s Christmas morning every day.

Every winter, storms batter Ucluelet into submission with splendour. Peter Larkin photo peninsula’s western side, is akin to discovering the ocean for the first time. And there’s nothing safe about it. I had never witnessed anything like the howling wind and frosty whitecaps of the Pacific Ocean, condensed by mutinous rocky cliffs into one swirling, rabid mass — a blazing quasar rendered in water rather than light. After being drawn outside despite the rain (getting as close to the spectacle as possible), we eventually made our way to our beautifully appointed, strangely serene quarters — complete with full kitchen, river rock shower, and an uninterrupted floor-toceiling view of the thrashing bay from the balcony, bed AND soaker bathtub. While it is tempting to spend the entire visit staring out the windows, you are minutes away from the rainforested and beachmarked Wild Pacific Trail; the stiff (and I mean bowl-you-over) winds haranguing Amphitrite Lighthouse; and the postcardperfect town of Tofino. Admittedly, we still ended up at our familiar Tofino haunts (Common Loaf, Shelter, Tofino Brewing Co.), as many of the businesses in downtown We’re in your neighborhood Ucluelet were closed for 0 0 the winter. . to make you smile… 9 *$ 9oom g Going in the off Z in season had us feeling iten h W like seabirds — unaffected by the whims of nature. Storm season or something… But the bright side of being MONDAY TO SATURDAY forced to spend a Sunday night in Nanaimo? It gave me plenty of time to write this story.

stay at Black Rock Resort, it was settled — we were going to Ucluelet. My husband and I have a love/ hate (mostly hate) relationship with BC Ferries. Missed reservations, cancelled sailings and hours spent bonding with any reading material within reach tend to steer us away from Island adventures, but the call of Black Rock was too strong. I had heard rumours of Neptune’s fury pounding against the promontory under humbling titanium skies, in stark contrast with the elegantly protective enclave of Black Rock. A colleague had just spent his honeymoon at the award-winning resort, and he came back raving with a wink and a grin. So instead of waiting to use my deal in summer like a sane person, we booked our stay for a few weekends later. Mid winter. Our anticipation was palpable as we disembarked the ferry, our troubles ticking off one by one as we passed the familiar landmarks of Coombs, Cathedral Grove and Port Alberni and wound our way

towards a new experience. Neither my husband nor I had ever reached the end of the Pacific Rim Highway and turned left — we had always steered ourselves right, with the six worldquality surfing beaches off Tofino in our sights. Nor had we been to the area during storm season, which lasts November through February, when some serious weather rolls in from Japan, along with up to 15ft of rainfall. And while we had anticipated snow enough to trade our smart car in for something a little more weighty (Sutton Pass, midway along, has an elevation of 240m), we had little idea what weather a January expedition would entail until we were sliding in it. Slowly, and safely (the threehour drive stretching into four), we arrived. And it was worth every skid of the tires. Hana Pesut’s provocative Switcheroo photobook features men and women swapping clothes. Enter to win a copy at WEVancouver.com.

Bait and switch By Kelsey Klassen

H

ana Pesut swears Switcheroo isn’t a fashion statement. The results of seeing stylish men and women swap clothes; the implications of people removing the garments that bind behind trees, rocks and garbage bins to cross-dress in public; the fact that, for the most part, men’s clothes look phenominal on women, yet not so much the other way around — that’s all up to you to ponder. “A lot of people interpret it in a gender focused way, but, for me, when I started it, I just thought it was an interesting way to take a portrait.” Goofy, disturbing, hilarious; Pesut began collecting these portraits three and a half years ago. On a camping trip in Pemberton one night, two of her friends, Sara and Julia, thought it would be funny to switch outfits. From then on, Pesut says she would see pairs of people on the street and wonder what they would look like in each other’s clothes. “I’m amazed how many people actually agree to do it, because when I first started it was just, ‘No. No. No.’” One of her favourites is of a local stylist and her father. She in khakion-khaki, he in heels and a leopard

print onesie. The 30-year-old Vancouver photographer and DJ, who shot the entire series with film, has combed through her 200 couplings since, and compiled them into a book ($30) that extends from the beaches of Stanley Park to the cobblestones of Barcelona. When we spoke, 13 switcheroos had just been commissioned by Japanese magazine Ginza. Pesut says, no matter where she shoots, it’s specific to each subject how they react to the role reversal. With one couple, the wife was quite a bit smaller than the husband. When he went to put on her jeans, thusly, he hit the denim roadblock all women dread. But he went with it, and the switch photo was snapped pants half down and underwear out. “I send everyone the photos, and I’ve only had one person say I can’t use theirs.” Being comfortable in each other’s clothes, however, is not a portender of happily ever after. Pesut adds that some of the couples have since broken up, giving the nostalgic notion of your ex’s T-shirt entirely new meaning. Switcheroo is for sale at Switcheroo. bigcartel.com.

Audi’s road ahead paved with more than good intentions 2014 Audi A3 Cabriolet/S3 MONACO: Over the next 12 months or so, consumers are going to be treated to an onslaught of new entries into the premium market. Not to worry, the next wave of German sedans and convertibles are of a more affordable nature. Recently Mercedes Benz introduced their all-new CLA 250 at an eye-popping price of just $34,000 for a sleek and sexy sedan. Next year we will see the introduction of BMW’s new 1-series and 2-Series sedans, coupes and convertibles. Audi has been ahead of the curve as they helped pioneer this entry-level segment with the original, the A3 sportback, sold in Canada for years. The all-new Audi A3 sedan will arrive in March of 2014 and the convertible and more powerful S3 sedan will arrive in the fall of 2014. This week I had a chance to drive both the convertible and S3 in Monte Carlo, a full year ahead of their introduction here. Audi is one of the fastest growing premium brands and a big part of that is the variety of cars they offer. Unfortunately, we will no longer get the sportback, but the fact we get the rest of the line of A3s is exciting for buyers. Looks The A3 is built off a shared platform with VW called MQB. This platform was a significant investment for the VW group as it is lighter, bigger and stronger than the last Golf platform and provides a sturdy basis for the A3 Cabrio and S3. The new Cabriolet is 60kg lighter than the outgoing European model, yet the wheelbase is longer and the interior room and trunk more ample. It could be argued that Audi is building some of the most attractive cars these days and these smaller products still convey the same sense of power and solidity that the bigger products portray. The S3 is especially forceful with a 15mm lower stance than the A3 sedan. The air intakes are bigger with more detail; the side mirrors are highlighted with brushed aluminum; and the rear of the car looks more masculine thanks to chunky exhaust tips. The

Free Will Astrology by Rob Brezsny r 8FFL PG /PWFNCFS

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19): The poet Charles Baudelaire prayed for help, but not to God; he prayed to the writer Edgar Allan Poe. Novelist Malcolm Lowry sometimes pleaded with God to give him insight, but he also prayed to the writer Franz Kafka. I really like this approach to seeking guidance, and recommend it to you in the coming days. Which hero, dead or alive, could you call on to uplift you? What amazing character might bring you the inspiration you need? Be brazen and imaginative. The spirits could be of more help than you can imagine. Magic is afoot. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20): US Confederate General Richard S. Ewell (1817-1872) sometimes experienced episodes in which he truly thought he was a bird. Princess Alexandria of Bavaria (1826-1875) believed that when she was young, she had eaten a glass piano. Then there was the Prussian military officer Gebhard Leberecht von Blucher (17421819), who imagined he was pregnant with an elephant. Sad and funny and crazy, right? And yet it’s my understanding that all of us have fixed delusions. They are less bizarre than those I cited, but they can still be debilitating. What are yours? Do you secretly believe that a certain turning point in your past scarred you forever? Are you incorrectly wracked with anger or guilt because of some event that may not have actually happened the way you remember it? Here’s the good news: Now is an excellent time to shed your fixed delusions. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20): Philosopher Eckhart Tolle suggests that “there may be one person who reflects your love back to you more clearly and more intensely than others.” For some of us, this numinous reflection comes from a special animal. Whatever is the case for you, Gemini, I urge you to devote extra time to your relationship with this creature in the next 14 days. Meditate on how you could provide more nurturing and inspiration. Brainstorm about the possibility of deepening your connection. What practical actions could you take to boost your loved one’s fortunes? CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22): The Cancerian soprano Kirsten Flagstad was regarded as one of the great operatic singers of the 20th century. Critic Desmond Shawe-Taylor said that “No one within living memory surpassed her in sheer beauty and consistency of line and tone.” She specialized in the operas of German composer Richard Wagner, whose master work, “The Ring of the Nibelung”, takes 15 hours to perform. Flagstad was asked to name the single most important

LOST AND FOUND

LOST: LADIES GOLD WATCH. Gucci brand gold link braclet brown face with black rim. Great sentimental value. Outside Scotia Bank Theatre or in Theatre or Pacific Sands Apt Bldg 1122 Guildford. Call 604-685-5615 lve msg

Thursday, November 21, 2013 WE Vancouver thing she needed in order to perform Wagner’s music with the excellence it demanded. Her answer: comfortable shoes. Regard that as good advice for your own life and work, Cancerian — both literally and metaphorically. It’s time to get really well-grounded. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22): Have you ever been in a social situation where you really didn’t care what anyone thought of you and therefore felt absolutely free to act on your inner promptings? When was the last time you lost all your inhibitions and self-consciousness while making love? Can you truly say that sometime recently you have been totally responsive to your festive impulses? If you have experienced any blockages in expressing this type of energy, now is a perfect moment to fix that. You have a date with robust, innocent self-expression. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22): Norwegian public television is experimenting with a phenomenon called Slow TV. In one reality show, the main character built a fire with logs and kept it burning for 12 hours. In another program, patient viewers watched for five days as a cruise ship made its way along the Norwegian coast. A third show featured a woman knitting a sweater from start to finish. I wish you would get hooked on slow-motion activities like those, Virgo. Maybe it would help you lower your thoughts-per-minute rate and influence you to take longer, deeper breaths and remember that relaxation is an art you can cultivate. And then you would be in righteous alignment with the cosmic rhythms. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22): You’re smarter than you think you are, and soon you will be even smarter. Previously inaccessible wisdom is seeping up from the depths of your subconscious mind, making its way to your conscious awareness. Your eyes are noticing more than they usually do. Your memory is working at peak levels. And your enhanced ability to entertain paradoxical ideas is giving you special insight into the nature of reality. What will you do with this influx of higher intelligence? I suggest you focus its full force on one of your knottiest problems. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21): The Paris Review interviewed Mexican poet Octavio Paz. “Just how much revising do you do?” the interviewer asked. “I revise incessantly,” Paz replied. “Some critics say too much, and they may be right. But if there’s a danger in revising, there is much more danger in not revising. I believe in inspiration, but I also believe that we’ve got to help inspiration, restrain it, and even contradict it.” I bring this up, Scorpio, because I believe you are ripe for a phase of intense revision. Inspiration has visited you a lot lately, but now it will subside for a while so you can wrangle all your raw material into graceful, resilient, enduring shapes.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21): Costa Rica will be closing its zoos in 2014. What will happen to the 400 or so animals that are housed there? They will have to be rehabilitated at animal rescue centres and then released into the wild. I suspect there will be a metaphorically similar process going on for you in the coming months, Sagittarius. Parts of your instinctual nature will, in a sense, be freed from captivity. You will need to find ways to retrain your animal intelligence how to function outside of the tame conditions it got used to. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19): Will fate kick your sweet ass sometime soon? Quite possibly. You may be compelled to face up to the consequences of your unloving actions or unconscious decisions. I’m pleased to tell you, however, that you might be able to dramatically minimize or even neutralize the butt-thumping. How? Go over the events of the last 11 months, and identify times when you weren’t your very best self or didn’t live up to your highest ideals. Then perform rituals of atonement. Express your desire to correct wrong turns. Give gifts that will heal damaged dynamics. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18): Grammy-winning singersongwriter Bill Withers became a big star in the 1970s with hits like “Ain’t No Sunshine” and “Lean on Me.” But he hasn’t recorded a new album since 1985, nor has he toured. What happened? In Still Bill, the documentary film about his life, Withers says, “I watch other people show off and I say, man, I used to want to show off. If I could just get, you know, moved to. I need a little injection in my showin’ off gland.” I wish you could get an injection like that, too, Aquarius. I’d like to see you show off more. Not in a contrived, over-the-top, Lady Gaga-esque way. Rather, the purpose would be to get more aggressive in showing people who you are and what you can do. I want your talents and assets to be better known. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20): I have a feeling that your value will be rising in the coming weeks. An attractive person you thought was out of your league may express curiosity about you. You could get an offer to do an interesting job or task that you had previously considered unavailable. I bet your reputation will be growing, mostly for the better. Who knows? If you put a half-eaten piece of your toast for sale on eBay, it might sell for as much as if it were Justin Timberlake’s toast. Here’s the upshot: You should have confidence in your power to attract bigger rewards and more appreciation. HOMEWORK: Forget all you know about gratitude. Act as if it’s a new emotion you’re tuning into for the first time. Then let it rip.
