Topham denied Rowbotham application AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter Arthur Topham’s Rowbotham application has been denied. Monday, a provincial court judge ruled Topham did not meet the requirements for approval. A Rowbotham application is used in the ju-
dicial process when one cannot afford a lawyer, yet their case is serious enough that if convicted the accused could serve jail time. Topham initially applied for the Rowbotham in May after the death of his lawyer Doug Christie. “I presented arguments for my financial situation and the complexity of the

case,” Topham said. “The attorney representing the attorney general’s office argued against and I was deemed ineligible.” Topham, charged with hate crimes, had his property searched and some seized in May of 2012, after it was determined there were “reasonable grounds the offence of promotion
of hatred was committed.” Crown officially moved forward on the charge about five months after the search and seizure of property. Topham, who adamantly denies the charge, said back in Novemeber of 2012, he’s hopeful having his day in court will raise awareness surrounding free speech and the defini-
tion of “hate crimes.” “This is not to say that I have full confidence in Canada’s judicial system but it will hopefully give me an opportunity to present the facts and the truth before a judge and jury of my peers; something that would never have happened if the case had been decided by a tribunal,” he said.
Good day, Quesnel. Thanks for reading — and that includes loyal subscriber S. Sawatsky! To join the Observer family, please call 250-992-2121 and ask for circulation.
Topham’s next court appearance is in January when the preliminary hearing will take place. “I will represent myself,” he said. “I will try to argue the case should be dismissed but that’s about a one in a million [chance.]” If convicted Topham could spend a maximum of two years in prison.

Lions club moves forward on senior housing The Quesnel Lions Housing Society (QLHS) is embarking on the next step in its campaign to develop a multi-unit seniors’ residential complex: a business plan to position the group for project financing. “A business plan is an essential tool for securing financing for the project,” QLHS president Mitchell Vik said. “We’ve now gathered enough funds to conduct final feasibility work and finalize the plan.” The QLHS plans a multi-million dollar development of at least 17 affordable housing units in north Quesnel for seniors. The final number of units will be based on market demand, zoning approvals, the capacity of the land purchased for the project and available financing. Twenty thousand in funding specifically targeted for business plan development has been obtained from BC Housing, the CMHC and the Northern Health Authority. “We’re deeply appreciative of the support we’ve received from those funding agencies,” Vik said. “That allows us to reserve the community funds we’ve raised for the capital costs of the project.” The funds will be used for additional market assessment, business planning, conceptual design work and initial cost assessment. A local team led by Jim Savage of Savage & Associates has been retained to conduct the work. Funding for other aspects of the housing project has been raised from community sources, including the Quesnel Rotary Club, the Quesnel Rodeo Club and the Quesnel Lions Club. The QLHS was launched by the Quesnel Lions Club in 2012 after the Lions determined that more seniors housing is an important need for Quesnel. The QLHS is a separate society established to fill that need. A critical milestone was reached last year when the Quesnel Lions Club found and purchased a large lot in north Quesnel for the project. Quesnel Lions Club president Ron Crickan is proud of the accomplishments so far. “We’re very pleased with how quickly the project is moving, and I look forward to more progress in the months to come,” he said.

Referendum results shortsighted
Disappointment? You bet! The Nov. 9 referendum to extend the borrowing by-law for $15 mil for the Multi-Center was defeated. Now I am not disappointed in democracy, that is why we have it – everyone is entitled to have their say. But really when I read comments about No Taj Mahal, I wonder where that comes from. I don’t remember those comments coming up at any of the town hall meetings that I co-chaired in 2007 or 2008, before the referendum. So where were those people that now feel the project was too large, going to cost too much. Where were your voices then? Why is it that the politician always has the finger pointed at them – when it is your duty to speak up and state what you think. That is democracy. A referendum is not held for fun (definitely not because politicians want one) many discussions take place, sometimes for years, to gage public opinion, defeat is not wanted, there is a cost to a referendum. Perhaps the economy played a role – we will never know. I have read comments that perhaps a movement should be organized to try and hold a referendum in 2014

GUEST VIEWS for a rural area – specifically Area B to withdraw from SubRegional Recreation. I certainly hope that is the opinion of only a few. Wait a minute – where is your spirit of community? Have these citizens never used the arena, pool, arts center or Alex Fraser Park? I am absolutely shocked by those comments. Are they trying to destroy something that has served us very well for the past 30+ years? Let’s see now, they believe the city gets all the candy while they don’t get their fair share in the rural area. Wow, I am confused. Certainly they
understand why those facilities are in the city. Does this mean because GR Baker Hospital, the CT scan, the North Cariboo Community Campus, both senior and junior high schools are in the city that counts as candy as well? Oh let’s not forget the rubberized track, believe me the list could go on and on. During the 1980’s, when the Citizens for Sub-Regional Recreation formed, it certainly wasn’t because they wished to divide and conquer – it was about building our community and making it a better place to live. We presented our vision to the politicians for Quesnel and Area which included Rink Two, theArts Centre, the grandstands and agriculture building.

at large worked to build it, everyone that could contribute did, whether you lived in the city or the rural area. That’s what makes communities strong and vibrant. Don’t forget the theatre, which has been in discussions for at least the past 25 plus years. Mad Mary has been quiet for many years; you never know she may have to be resurrected. Lots of work to do regardless; let’s make sure it is together. Chu lei Keen “In the early 1870’s a young Chinese left his village near Canton in company with his cousin to join his grandfather who was already established in the Cariboo. Chu Lei Keen took ship in a 5,000-ton steamer from Hong Kong to Victoria and then started the long trip inland to Van Winkle where his relation, Wah Lee, had a general store. When the two young travellers arrived at 150 Mile House, they were met by a partner of the Grandfather who told the pair they were to help him herd 30 pigs back to Quesnel, which were needed for the store. The young men drove the pigs before them and walked the remaining miles into town in just about two weeks. Chu Lei joined his grandfather in the store, which catered to the more than 500 members of the Chinese community. The company of Wah Lee imported and sold all manner of specialty items which were essential ingredients of any well-kept oriental kitchen.”

Convincing the politicians was no easy task – two and a half years to have the referendum. I certainly hope this next process is not going to take another two and a half years. Are these same citizens that worked so hard for the No vote now going to organize and work with the politicians to come up with the best plan? Or sit by and wait for the politicians to come up with a vision then work to defeat it? Now is the time to stand united. There is never a time to even consider divide and conquer. We need to replace that old arena. In case you didn’t live here in the 1950’s when it was built, the community

Investment Myths that Could Cost You Money Sometimes investor beliefs turn out to be myths that may cause investing mistakes. Here are some of the more popular myths that may hold a grain of truth, but are probably best avoided. A high yield means a high return. Whether you invest in bonds with the highest interest rate or stocks with the highest dividend yield, high yield typically comes with high risk. Consider the risk of a bond default or dividend cut, which typically lowers the price of the bond or stock, as well as the income. (Keep in mind that dividends may be increased, decreased or eliminated at any point without notice.) The U.S. dollar will decline. No one has a good track record in forecasting currencies. Since we don’t know which way the U.S. dollar will move, basing portfolio decisions on such a specific prediction is risky. Keep in mind that many U.S. companies receive more than half of their profits from outside the country, so not all will be hurt by a declining U.S. dollar. So instead of avoiding U.S. investments because of an expectation for the U.S. dollar to decline, consider making them an appropriate part of your international investments. The best investments have the lowest fees. Fees matter, but returns after fees and taxes are what you keep. So consider whether the fees pay for something valuable, such as better liquidity, enhanced asset selection or improved diversification, though keep in mind that diversification does not guarantee a profit or protect against loss. Don’t be misled into thinking that all low-fee investments provide high returns. You may pay higher fees to own bond or equity funds, but these fees are often more than justified by the benefits they provide to your portfolio. You can’t be too diversified. Owning many similar investments tends to increase the complexity of your portfolio without increasing the return or reducing the risk. If you own individual stocks and bonds, you should consider constructing your portfolio carefully to ensure adequate diversification. To start, each stock or bond should constitute no more than 5% of your portfolio, and they should be spread across a variety of industries. If you own mutual funds as well, you’ll need fewer to achieve adequate diversification, but you’ll want to own funds that complement each other. Speak with your financial advisor to learn more about these and other myths that could keep you from meeting your longterm goals. Edward Jones, Member Canadian Investor Protection Fund.

Many residents may have been born in Canada to parents that came from another country. There is often still a close connection to this culture of origin.
Because Canada is made up of these and more cultures, including Aboriginal, Inuit, Metis and French Canadian, our national culture is a mosaic incorporating parts of many, many different cultures. A lot of the English words we use on a daily basis come from another language; the French RSVP comes immediately to mind, as does vice versa (Latin for the other way). We are fortunate to live in a country where we are free to celebrate all cultures. These cultures are celebrated in homes, in places of worship, at social gatherings in different halls and out of doors. Many of these celebrations are open to anyone who wants to come and share in the culture. For instance, the Scottish Ceilidhs and Aboriginal Powwows welcome all, as does the Sikh temple
during the weekend celebrations. It might just be fun and interesting for you to learn more about the different cultures of people who live in your neighbourhood or of those who work beside you. Get your flu shot
G
etting a flu shot is just another form of insurance. You get it because the alternative is nasty. Just like insurance companies who count on most insurees never having a claim, health professionals hope you never get the flu. With the expanded list of eligible people for the flu shot, there’s all the more reason to make sure you’re immunized. I have a hard time understanding the thinking of nurses who resist vaccination against a disease that takes too many lives each year and causes many more to spend days if not weeks sick. I believe teachers, retail staff, daycare workers, well just about everybody should not only protect themselves from the flu virus but also those they are in contact with. No person is an island and what you chose to do or not do regarding the flu vaccine affects everyone you encounter. For the relatively few who have a reaction to the vaccine, I believe they have an alternative that still protects you but doesn’t cause adverse effects. This year I also received my pneumonia immunization and that’s good for life. I had pneumonia for the first time just a few years ago and that was something I never want to repeat. As I age, I need to take more and more precautions against ill health and I try to do that diligently. I plan to ask my doctor about the shingles vaccine. Many of the right choices require self-discipline and applying myself but getting the flu shot only required I showed up. That was the extent of my commitment to avoiding the flu. Although the flu clinics have finished, flu shots are still available at some pharmacies, most doctor’s offices and the Public Health Unit. You owe it to your co-workers, your family and all those strangers you come in contact with every day. – Annie Gallant, Cariboo Observer
Mirrors reflect appearance, not true beauty
M
y 10-year-old daughter showed me a picture that was circulating on the internet of three gorgeous models, one in particular with an exceptionally tiny waist. “She’s skinnier than me,” Daisy said about the model in the middle. “And she’s a grown up.” For my sweet little girl, this was confirmation that she herself was “too curvy” and needed to lose weight. I explained that her healthy body was perfect and beautiful exactly the way it was and she didn’t need to change a thing. I then showed her another version of the same picture – but one taken prior to the model’s waist being digitally manipulated to appear inches thinner. Miranda Kerr, the model in question, just so happened to be on my radar since the very photo my daughter was showing me was being reported on by many online news sites. Apparently the famous model had posted the 2012 image to Instagram and some detail-oriented people noticed that her waist was much smaller in her version,
Lori Welbourne
On A Brighter Note and started sharing the original picture beside it as a comparison. “Why would she do that Mom?” Daisy asked, after seeing the difference between the two photos. “She was already skinny.” I told her that we didn’t know who altered the picture, but that it was a very common practice. I also said that no matter how great we think someone looks, that person, or someone else, may think otherwise. “You know how you were comparing your body to hers?” I asked. “You should never compare. You are you and your body is yours. It’s your home for the rest of your life. Love it and nurture it – and never think it’s not good enough.” She nodded and agreed.
looked no matter how their outer shell appeared. I now worry that I’m failing at least one of them and will do my best to strengthen her self-worth immediately. But here’s the thing that we all know: children are influenced by so much more than just their parents. They have friends, teachers, family members, famous folks and many other people and things that affect who they become. There’s only so much we can do. I’m hoping that as long as Sam and Daisy feel cherished and valued for who they are, rather than how they look, they will be light years ahead of me in the self-acceptance department. I don’t want them wasting precious time trying to attain some unachievable idea of aesthetic perfection that means nothing. What I want is for them to embrace their so-called flaws and treat their bodies, and themselves with the love and respect we all deserve. Lori Welbourne is a syndicated columnist. But then she said something I was hoping she hadn’t noticed. “But you don’t think your body’s good enough,” she said. “I heard you tell Dad you’re fat.” Ah, nuts. I had been using the “f” word recently and I clearly needed to stop, for my sake and the sake of our impressionable young children. Not that our 13-year-old son has taken any notice. But when I was his age, I remember how unsatisfied my mother was with her own appearance and I couldn’t understand why she would ever criticize herself. I thought she was beautiful and I hoped to look exactly like her when I grew up. I didn’t though. After gaining weight during puberty I developed an eating disorder and continued to pack on the pounds well into my mid-20s. I ended up obese and miserable, promising myself that if I ever had kids, I’d teach them to love themselves from the inside out. I wanted them to be happy, confident and satisfied with how they

HMC, what’s the problem? Please do your job Editor: How far can HMC go before they are held responsible for people and children’s lives? I live 35 kms out West Fraser Road and have to drive down the dreaded Deep Creek hill to go to work. It was never a concern for me as I knew the sand truck from out our way would be there – we always saw him going by in the early morning to
Letters to the Editor
make sure the hill was safe for the school bus. This truck also looked after the West Fraser Road from Deep Creek to half way to Williams Lake and all side roads. Well, has HMC decided that it should be cut? The first morning of the snow, which we all knew was coming, I came to Deep Creek, not a sand truck in sight. I slowly made my way down, all the time
thinking about the school bus with all the children. We also had our school closed this year, so now the parents have no choice but to send their children into town for school. When the school bus approached the hill, he made the conscious decision to not go down. So there he waited for HMC to send out a grader from town. Day two of snow, I made
another scary trip down Deep Creek hill to work. The school bus, with chains, had a scary ride and another vehicle went over the bank. HMC’s own truck went over the bank and had to be rescued. Third day of snow, I approached Deep Creek hill, slowed down to 30 kms, put my pickup into 4X4 and was slowly making my way down. Half way down, going
around a bad corner, my pickup started to slide and all I could see was the bank coming – somehow I was able to stop. I have heard nothing but terrible stories for the last three days. Yes we had our first snow fall of the year and yes it was slushy and dangerous, but HMC was warned it was coming and I feel they were not prepared. The few trucks HMC
have out there are going full out, which I feel is causing them to go off the road and to have collisions. They do not have enough trucks out there. Have they have decided to cut to save on the budget? When do people and children’s lives come before the all mighty dollar? Sherry Webster Quesnel

Bat rescue turns into rabies scare for Crooked Leg Ranch’s Willow Eyford
W
hen you work in a rescue business, not much will surprise or phase you. That was why Willow responded to a call to go rescue some bats. Someone had a box with three bats with no idea how to care for them, so Willow was called. She picked them up, put the box on the back seat and then carried on with her day. She phoned a friend who works with wildlife but had to wait for a response so the bats went on the road with her.
Crooked Leg Tails
Finally, she was advised that the best option was to release the bats in a place that was safe from predators. She put the box up high in a garage, opened the lid and backed away. When she checked in the morning, all of the bats were gone. So, job well done, she hoped that they thrived on the bugs at the ranch. The next day, as she was driving to work, her car started squeaking. That wasn’t unusual, so she just turned up the radio to cover the squeak. The squeak continued and got louder. And louder. She stopped the car and started to

investigate because the squeak continued after the car was turned off. She opened the glove box and there was a very hungry baby bat. It was tiny and nearly hairless. She picked it up, wrapped it up and
wondered what to feed it. Willow contacted another wildlife friend who told her that it would probably die but do the same thing as she did with the others, give it a chance to fly away. As an aside, her friend mentioned
that many bats have rabies. What? Rabies? Now the panic was on. Willow called the nurses help line and was told the risk was high to extreme and that she would probably need a rabies shot. Symptoms are
itchiness and pain leading to fatigue, soreness, fever and maybe death. So now Willow was really worried but the bats didn’t really bite so maybe things were OK. She tried to let the baby bat fly away but
it was still there the next day so she took it to a local wildlife centre. A centre must be certified and licensed to work with wildlife so this bat could not be kept at the ranch. You will be pleased to know that the bat
was well taken care of and as far as we know, Willow is not rabid. For more information, please contact www. crookedlegranch.com. Liz-Anne Eyford is a volunteer with Crooked Leg Ranch.
Sawmill inspections continue. WorkSafeBC Prevention staff have been working with industry, other provincial regulators, and stakeholders to ensure that BC sawmills and other businesses that deal with wood dust are, and continue to be, in compliance with safety requirements. targeted inspections of other wood products manufacturing industries, including pellet plants, and plywood and pulp and paper mills. We

Ongoing and sustainable compliance
inspected every sawmill in the province for compliance with that order. A CEO-led sawmill taskforce and industry advisory group developed safety resources to distribute to industry, including best practice guidelines and an audit tool for dust-control management. Three new occupational health and safety guidelines related to wood dust were published, along with two hazard alerts to address risks specifically related to wood dust. Our officers re-inspected all sawmills to evaluate the industry’s efforts to manage combustible dust.
Scope expanded to include wood processing operations
In 2013 and going forward, our officers will continue to address combustible dust as a regular part of their inspectional activity. This winter, a dedicated team of officers will re-inspect sawmills throughout the province. The sawmill industry has made significant progress in addressing dust management. We want to ensure that progress and compliance with wood-dust management requirements is being sustained. Safety in BC sawmills is a vitally important issue, firstly to those who work in the industry, and also to their families and communities. Our common goal is to make wood-dust management an integral part of manufacturing operations. We will continue to work proactively with businesses around the province to make safety

Keith Billington will be in Quesnel signing copies of his book The Last Patrol at Caryall Books Monday, Nov. 25. In 1970 Billington, along with ten other men, embarked on the nearly 800 km trip by dog team from Ford MacPherson to Dawson City. This was a commemorative journey of the famous ‘last patrol’ in 1910 when a crew of Royal Northwest Mounted Police attempted the same trip, but with a much more tragic outcome. It was a quiet December morning when Inspector Fitzgerald and his crew left for McPherson, Northwest Territories, on a dog team patrol to Dawson City, Yukon. Their departure was without fanfare and after a brief handshake and a salute, the men pulled out of the village and onto the frozen Peel River. During the gruelling 764-km journey, after running out of supplies and experiencing brutally cold weather, they faced starvation and eventually froze to death. These four officers of the RNMP would be remembered as the Last Patrol. Sixty years later, Billington, an outpost nurse working in Fort McPherson and his recruited team organized a re-enactment of the historic trip. On Feb. 15, 1970, television crews and dignitaries from different agencies all descended on Fort McPherson to document the start of Billington’s Last Patrol. Some wished them well and some were convinced this expedition might also end in disaster. Billington weaves together these two stories, revealing the details behind both the men who lost their lives and the men who risked their lives to commemorate the sacrifice made by Fitzgerald and his team. This gripping story illustrates the commitment and determination of the men of the Royal Northwest Mounted Police and is a tribute to the legacy of the Gwich’in people, who lived and continue to live and survive in this beautiful but inhospitable land.

Corporal Josh Nelson is thoroughly enjoying CF infantry ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter
H
e didn’t dream of being a soldier; it wasn’t something he’d ever given much thought to. In fact, it was a chance visit to a website that set Josh Nelson on his current career path. After graduating from QSS in 2007, Josh worked construction until the economic downturn in 2008 and he found himself out of work and wondering what he would do instead. “I was surfing the net and stumbled on the Canadian Forces (CF) website,” Josh said. “It was a spur of the moment decision.” Conveniently, Josh was able to submit an application online and in less than a month he received a phone call from CF. Inside a week he was interviewed in Prince George and the day after that he was in. “My parents were surprised but supportive, apparently though my mother cried a lot,” he said. On his application, Josh indicated his first choice was infantry and that’s where he landed for basic training in Camp Borden, Ont. “I loved it,” he said. “Everything about it was great.” After basic training, Josh was posted to Wainwright, Alberta where he received more specific infantry training. This all suited him as one of his biggest enemies is boredom. “I love to change things up and the army provides that,” he said. Still very happy with his choice of careers, Corporal Josh Nelson’s first service post after completing his training was to CFB Shilo in 2010, where he was attached to the Second Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. Part of what appeals to this young man is the physical discipline and emphasis on staying fit to fight. “I prefer boots on the ground rather than in a LAV3, I prefer to carry my pack instead of being carried in a vehicle,” he said. But he conceded while in Afghanistan, he appreciated the protection offered by an armoured vehicle. As deployment to Afghanistan approached, Josh and his fellow soldiers were trained on most types of handheld weaponry. “My regular weapon is a C8 carbine,” he said. “I’ve cycled through almost every job available at my level.” That includes rifleman, machine gun and signaller with C6 machine gunner still to learn. The C6 is primarily a platoon weapon and when fully complemented, a platoon would have approximately 36 – 38 members. Josh left for Afghanistan on July 2 of this year and was stationed in Kabul. “Canada’s role is now one of support and training of local forces,” he said. “I didn’t see any shelling or rocket attacks.” But he did make good friends both in his unit and with Afghan locals. “I’ve met many cool Afghans, our interpreter’s name was Mohamed but we called him John and he was very cool,” Josh said. He believes Canadians have done a lot of good in prepping for withdrawal and he said their hope is the Afghans will establish stability. Josh has two years to go in the Canadian Forces and isn’t sure just what he’ll do after that. “I take it one day at a time and am prepared to go wherever they send me,” he added. While on base Josh is busy with various classes, maintaining his kit and says he works out a lot and, of course, enjoys coming home a couple of times a year.

Billy Swyers, lane three, and Seth Reddeman, lane five, get ready to swim; (below) the Waveriders get pumped up for their swims with a cheer.
Starting out strong
Allan Wishart and contributed photo
Waveriders chop seconds off times at first meet of the season JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter The grins on the young swimmers faces tell the story better than any picture or paragraph could after a successful swim meet the Waveriders had been looking forward to. “I’ve been waiting two months for this swim meet,”swimmer Sonny Cervienka said. The meet lived up to expectations as the swimmers sloughed off time at the Prince George swim meet last weekend. “The kids started this year already so sharp. I knew they were going to do well and take off some time, but they took off so much,” coach Jeritt Brink said. “It was awesome to watch.” Brink had suspected that after only two months of training, the swimmers still had some cobwebs clinging from a sedentary summer. He was, however, wrong, as every one of his swimmers cut off great swaths of time from their swims, including Garnet Currie who slashed his 400 Individual Medley time by 11 seconds. Brad Swyers summed up his jump in performance saying, “it makes it look like I wasn’t doing anything last year.” It’s Brink’s third year with the Waveriders and he’s seeing some dividends now from his training. Swimming is more than just conditioning and it’s
the little technical details he’s been trying to impart to the young swimmers. And those details are where a lot of the Waveriders got their time. “I’m just happy with the way their racing,” he said. “They’re not going out and throwing their arms around like little monkeys. They’re trying to control their swimming and they’re doing their turns and they’re understanding pushing off the wall. It was a good technical meet.” After the successful start, every swimmer old enough has some sort of A time in sight, hoping to take on some of the best young swimmers in the province. Currie, 13, went on to one
third place finish, three second place finishes and three first place finishes, garnering him the silver medal overall for 12-13 year-old boys. In the process, Currie also made his AAA times for the 200m Freestyle, 100m Breaststroke and 400m IM. While happy with his times, Currie is still looking for improvements in the little details of his swimming to get a few more AAA times. Natasha Hanson, 13, cut down her times as well, earning a third place finish as well as a pair of second place finishes in three of her races, but never dropped out of the top tens in any of her races. Hanson also managed to net AA times in 200m Freestyle, 200m IM,
100m Freestyle and 100m Backstroke. “I started out way further ahead then I ended my last season,” she said. Hanson also just fell short of an A time in the 50m Front, spurred on by her younger team mate in the same race, Emerie Watson, 12, who was just seconds off the A time as well. Watson also took a AA time for 13 year-olds in 50m Free. The relay teams also finished in impressive positions, with the girls 10 and under finishing second in the province in the 200m Free close after the Prince George team, which had the team cheering loudly. In the 200m Medley, the 10 and under girls team finished
third, which the boy’s matched. The boy’s 11-12 team finished fourth in the same category. In the 200m Free, the boys 10 and under finished in second, while the older, 11-12 year-old boys finished fourth again. Billy Swyers, 10, finished top six in all his events garnering a first and second place finish, as well as an 11 year-old A standard in the 50m Free and 100m Backstroke. Cervienka, 16, also made his A time in 100m Breaststroke and 50m Free along with a trio of top 10 finishes. Ryley O’Hara, 11, also took a podium position, finishing third in 100 IM along with taking a handful of top 10 finishes. The team also brought along a couple first timers, including 11 year-old Logan Godsoe and 5 year-old Braden Novak. Despite his inexperience at meets, Godsoe took home to bronze-medal finishes, along with some solid top ten finishes. Novak finished his sole, 25m Fly in sixth. “The head meet manage came up to him after and asked, ‘are you seriously only five yearsold.’ It was the cutest thing ever,” Brink said. Boroka Peter, 6, also competed with the team, finishing top 20 in all of her races. Next up for the Waveriders is the Williams Lake Bluefins mini-meet and the Kamloops meet in December. The team would also like to wish their coach, Jerrit Brink a happy birthday.

Developing with the best JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter A trio of young, local boxers made a step towards the next level at the Boxing B.C. development camp earlier this month. Kyle Tessier, 16, Haven Gillmaier, 16, and Olin Lee, 13, along with coach Matt Tessier, got to experience national level boxing at the Kelowna Boxing Club as part of the Junior Development team. The three young boxers enjoyed their time down south and their chance to train with such a high level of boxers and trainers. "It was a great experience to be able to train along side national medalists and champions," Kyle Tessier said. "I enjoyed the camp and meeting the other boxers. I hope I can take what they taught me and use it to my Turn kitchen scraps into
advantage the next time I'm in the ring." Team B.C. coach Bob Pegues was coaching the camp and some of the team's elite members were on hand preparing for the Final Team Selection, which takes place at the Nationals, including: Tobe Ibidero, National bronze medalist and Alberta Golden Boy; Sara Haghighatjoo, National silver medalist; Jag Seehra
National bronze and silver medalist; Sasan Haghighat-joo, best youth boxer at the Alberta Golden Gloves; and Kenny Lally, national team member and five time Canadian champion. Training included roadwork, strength training, technical sessions and an anaerobic lactic training session. The team also had a nutritionist on hand to help the young boxers to broaden

Audi’s road ahead paved with more than good intentions 2014 Audi A3 Cabriolet/S3 MONACO: Over the next 12 months or so, consumers are going to be treated to an onslaught of new entries into the premium market. Not to worry, the next wave of German sedans and convertibles are of a more affordable nature. Recently Mercedes Benz introduced their all-new CLA 250 at an eye-popping price of just $34,000 for a sleek and sexy sedan. Next year we will see the introduction of BMW’s new 1-series and 2-Series sedans, coupes and convertibles. Audi has been ahead of the curve as they helped pioneer this entry-level segment with the original, the A3 sportback, sold in Canada for years. The all-new Audi A3 sedan will arrive in March of 2014 and the convertible and more powerful S3 sedan will arrive in the fall of 2014. This week I had a chance to drive both the convertible and S3 in Monte Carlo, a full year ahead of their introduction here. Audi is one of the fastest growing premium brands and a big part of that is the variety of cars they offer. Unfortunately, we will no longer get the sportback, but the fact we get the rest of the line of A3s is exciting for buyers. Looks The A3 is built off a shared platform with VW called MQB. This platform was a significant investment for the VW group as it is lighter, bigger and stronger than the last Golf platform and provides a sturdy basis for the A3 Cabrio and S3. The new Cabriolet is 60kg lighter than the outgoing European model, yet the wheelbase is longer and the interior room and trunk more ample. It could be argued that Audi is building some of the most attractive cars these days and these smaller products still convey the same sense of power and solidity that the bigger products portray. The S3 is especially forceful with a 15mm lower stance than the A3 sedan. The air intakes are bigger with more detail; the side mirrors are highlighted with brushed aluminum; and the rear of the car looks more masculine thanks to chunky exhaust tips. The
direct injection turbo with 220hp, matched to Cabriolet on the other hand is a more sophistiAudi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system. There will be no manual shift and no diesel, which is a shame, as I drove one of Inside Another strength of Audi is interior fit the European versions with this setup and it was and finish and these new products are covered superb. Hitch up those snowplows the white stuff is flying
‘‘
For most people who are just using a plow for clearing their own driveway, a straight-blade will more than likely be just fine.
’’
Ian Harwood
I know I wrote about winter driving last week and the snow and rain began to fall in various parts of the province but please don’t blame me for this first blast of chilly weather. I’m here to help and at the risk of bringing on a blizzard, I thought I would share some information on snow plows. For most people who are just using a plow for clearing their own driveway, a straight-blade will more than likely be just fine. Snowsport offers a personal plow that is perfect for the homeowner. This system attaches to a front mounted receiver just as a boat trailer would. The U shaped bracket is connected to the receiver and the snow blade rides up and down on these bars to allow for change in the terrain your plowing. Because there are no hydraulics involved, all you
do is back up and the snow blade lies back skimming over the surface. When driving forward the blade automatically re-engages for plowing. When you are finished, lift the blade back over the push frame into the transport position. The cost of this option is $1,644. K2 is another brand of snowplow designed for the homeowner with acreage. Designed to work with a front receiver hitch, just like the Snowsport, it simply slides in the receiver and locks in place with a hitch lock. The winch is controlled from inside the cab and will raise or lower the height of the blade. The blade comes with a hardened steel cutting edge scraper, rubber snow deflector, skid shoes, and plow markers. It is available in 82”, 84”, and 88” lengths. Cost is $1,315. If you use a plow to make money, then you will want to be able to do the job quickly and efficiently, so you may want to go with the multi-position. Multi-position plows are up to 50 percent faster due to the fact that you can reposition the blades to all straight-blade positions in addition to the scoop and V positions. This makes the plow adaptable to nearly any job you need to do. When it comes to the composition of the blade you have the choice between steel and poly. The vast majority of snowplows on the market today come with steel blades, although the
poly plows are becoming more and more popular. The reason for the growing popularity is that poly is just as strong as steel and maybe stronger. They also have a lower coefficient of friction, which saves on fuel costs and is easier on your vehicle. The poly plows are also saturated with color all the way through so nicks and scratches do not show like they do with steel, plus they do not rust. Attaching and detaching the plow is very important as well. You do not want to be freezing and trying to deal with getting a blade on and off your truck. Try the attachment system for yourself at the dealer so you can see firsthand how easy or difficult it is to use. Most snowplow makers use a single halogen light bulb, which are not bright enough; some makers have come out with dual halogen bulbs with the option of upgrading to High Intensity Discharge. These HID lights are four times brighter than
standard halogen bulbs and also last ten times as long. Hydraulics is probably the most important part of the plow, along with the controls. Be sure that the hydraulics system is dependable and the controls are simple and easy to use. Go for quality rather than trying to save a buck. Remember “you get what you pay for” definitely applies here. Cost for these units are $6,000 to $8,000 depending on the model. When it comes to the warranty, be sure to know exactly what you are getting and what the warranty covers. Some only cover parts, while others cover parts and labor. Warranties are usually either one year or two years; so pay attention to the warranty. Take all of these things into consideration when shopping for a snowplow and you will be able to choose the right one to suit your needs. ian.harwood@drivewaybc. ca
Discouraged by the cost to fight a ticket? Not fighting it will impact your insurance premium. Legal Expense insurance provides advice and a lawyer to protect your rights for less than the price of a cup of coffee a day.
Drives-U-Crazy Impatient to get pastLook, please just get it through your thick skull that I’ve signalled to park and you should let me get tucked into the space before you swing out to pass on this narrow road. It’s not a matter of etiquette, I have the right of way. If you had actually paid attention to my signal many cars back you would not have become stuck behind me and could have made a safe pass in the other lane. kmorgan@blackpress.ca

THE
SALES EVENT
CANADA’S BEST-SELLING MINIVAN IS PRICED TO MOVE.
AS GOOD AS
Yes, yes, you are wondering what a picture four-seat sofa is doing in Driveway. Well, it is a Bentley after all. The new Bentley Home collection is inspired by the renowned craftsmanship and exquisite materials that characterise the interiors of all Bentley models. The bodies of the new Richmond pieces are created with an embracing double shell that can be covered in either leather or a fine veneer of burr walnut. The same wide selection of veneers, which is available for Bentley car customers, is also available for most pieces in the collection. The wood is
then carefully matched to a padded structure covered in a light cashmere The colour palette is composed of varying neutral tones of ivory and taupe matched with shades of beige and cream. Intricate details such as the leather braid around the contours highlight the soft and sinuous lines. The iconic quilted diamond pattern embossed in the leather interiors of a Bentley has also been interpreted into the unique designs of the furniture.
