Broccoli: A Super Food Who would think that broccoli, the unassuming food that it is, would be a potent detoxifier, cancer fighter and healer of cells? Well, it is just that. Broccoli (and all cruciferous vegetables including kale, brussel sprouts, cauliflower and even wasabi) contains a compound called sulphoraphane glucosinolate (SG). This compound is most concentrated in broccoli sprouts and young cruciferous plants and declines as the plant ages. Once ingested, SG is converted in the digestive system by the bacterial microflora from SG to sulphoraphane (yet another reason to make sure you have enough beneficial bacteria in your digestive system). Once converted, sulphoraphane is absorbed into the blood where it helps to activate protective proteins that help cells divide normally. It is also a powerful inducer of Phase II detoxification enzymes. These enzymes help the liver detoxify dangerous compounds and toxins before they can do cell damage in your body. Phase II enzymes stay elevated in the body long after the
sulphoraphane is gone, up to 72 hours, providing long lasting antioxidant protection, promoting cellular integrity and repairing DNA damage. Sulphoraphane also promotes the formation of glutathione, one of the most potent antioxidants known. How does this translate to your health? Numerous studies have found sulphoraphane, when taken orally, to reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes and eye damage. It can even help leukemia, lung, prostate, breast, colon and skin cancer. Sulphoraphane can also be made into a cream and applied topically where it helps eliminate hyperpigmentation (age spots), moles and other skin abnormalities, psoriasis, eczema, stretch marks and skin tags. I take it by mouth to help with a sports injury to my knee where it helps block enzymes that aggravate osteoarthritis. How many times have we said to our kids (or heard from our parents) “eat your vegetables?” This age old adage takes on more meaning knowing it can prevent and help cure disease.

This garbage was recently dumped just off the Houle Forest Service Road in Meadowbrook. RCMP ask that if you see someone dumping garbage on Crown land or have information on this incident, to give them a call. seed oil, contact cement and household garbage. Recently the Ministry spent quite a bit of time and money to clean up from illegal dumping including the area identified above commonly known as “the Gov”, where 50 tons of garbage was removed. It is illegal to dump material on Crown Land and fines can be levied to those involved. The transfer stations in the area are open daily and most items can be dumped for free. Illegal dumping costs taxpayers thousands of dollars a year and is an environmental concern. Officers are continuing the investigation; they will also be conducting patrols of the sites in an effort to curtail the illegal disposal of garbage and other items. If you observe illegal dumping contact your local RCMP detachment.

Another culprit in getting lung cancer Submitted November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month and a family personally affected by lung cancer is joining forces with health advocates to encourage Southern Interior residents to make testing their homes for radon gas a top priority. Radon exposure is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking and has been found in high concentrations in the Southern Interior Region of BC. Dana Schmidt’s wife, Donna Schmidt, passed away in 2009 from lung cancer. The Schmidt family lives in Castlegar, a community with one of the highest rates of radon gas in the province. Since his wife’s passing, Schmidt has been on a personal quest to reduce radon exposure through education and prevention in Castlegar and throughout the region through the establishment of the Donna Schmidt Lung Cancer Prevention Society. Through this Society, Dana distributes hundreds of radon gas test kits to the people of Castlegar and surrounding communities and gathers the results of these tests to provide data on the extent of the issue of radon gas. According to Schmidt, “My wife, who quit smoking about 20 years before her death from lung cancer, had a significantly increased risk of getting lung cancer because of the high radon levels in our home. Her exposure to radon in our home increased her odds of getting lung cancer as if she had never quit smoking. When it comes to lung cancer, because early detection is so difficult, prevention is very important. I don’t want others to suffer the same consequences we did because

of a lack of awareness about radon.” Schmidt adds, “I’ve been focusing on educating people about testing the levels of radon gas in their homes and showing them what they can do to bring the levels down as I have done in my own home and my company has done in my office where I work. We know that across the Kootenay and Interior regions, workplaces as well as new homes can also have high radon levels. Surprisingly, some of the highest levels measured in Castlegar were in more newlybuilt homes so it’s really important for everyone – from homeowners to home-builders in the industry, to be aware of radon. It is possible to reduce radon in new homes through design and construction for an increased cost of only several hundred dollars. Likewise, older homes that test high for radon can be addressed by working with a radon mitigation specialist. Radon is a very serious issue but it’s an issue we can do something about. We can save lives in British Columbia by testing for and reducing exposure to radon.” “The Schmidt’s story illustrates how important it is to have your home tested for radon and how easy it can be to reduce cancer risk,” says Patti King, Team Lead of Health Promotion with the Canadian Cancer Society, BC and Yukon. “Radon is a naturally occurring, colourless, odourless gas that can build up in people’s homes. We need to be aware of it so we can take action. Fall and winter are a key time of year to test your home. With summer coming to an end, this means often closing windows and spending more time indoors, which can in-

crease the risk of radon exposure.” Health Canada estimates that 16 per cent of lung cancer deaths in Canada are caused by radon and that an estimated 500,000 Canadians are living in homes that exceed the federal guidelines of 200 Bq/m3 for radon exposure. The risk of developing lung cancer depends on how much radon a person is exposed to, how long they are exposed as well as whether or not they smoke. “High radon concentrations have been detected in homes across the country and the Interior Region of BC is no exception,” says Dr. Mark Lysyshyn, Public Health Physician with Interior Health. “Radon occurs as a result of the natural decay of uranium in rocks and soil. The only way to know if your home has high radon levels is to test it. If radon testing indicates high levels in a home measures can be taken to lower the radon levels.” To obtain a test kit, homeowners can contact the BC Lung Association at 1-800-665LUNG (5864). The kits cost $30 and come with information about how to perform the test. Alternatively, radon test devices may also be available at local hardware stores. Prices and types can vary. In BC, an estimated 3,000 new lung cancer cases are expected for 2013 and 2,400 lung cancer deaths are expected. Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer death for both men and women and takes the lives of more Canadians than breast, prostate and colorectal cancers combined. Concrete isn’t just for your outside patio anymore. After years of being sidelined, stoneware and concrete are on the verge of making a comeback in home design. Now avail able in a huge range of colours, patterns, textures, and formats, these two materials have been brought up to date and are now suitable for a multitude of applications. Stoneware is kind of ceramic made of clay and silica fired at very high tempera tures. Highly resis tant and available in many different finishes and effects, it is used mainly for good qual ity tiling. During the 1980s, manufacturers had the idea of chang ing its natural colour by covering it with enamel coating — this is what we are now seeing in home décor. Stoneware can be made to look like slate, ter racotta, floorboards, or oxidized metal. The latest innovation is earthenware wall tiles, which are treated with titanium dioxide at high temperatures to create a photocatalysis effect. This helps the tiles eliminate bacteria and polluting agents genera ted by heat ing sources, cigarette smoke, and urban traf fic. In a simultane ous trend, concrete is increasingly indispens able in modern homes as a way to delineate liv ing spaces. Treated
with a pigment, it can also be a pretty floor covering used over radiant floor heating systems, as well as in the creation of furni ture and counter tops. Concrete can be tex tured with glass inlays, wood, or with materials such as gold leaf. Sur face treatments avail able include engraving, sanding, grit blasting, or crushing.

by Menno Dueck Fact or myth? Men are born knowing everything about power tools. Mike and Stuart have different views when it comes to tools. Mike is proud of his collection, something he has been known to gaze at adoringly and even fondle from time to time. Stuart doesn’t like to spend money; he’s a more borrow from buddies and neighbours kind of guy. Both are confident in their unchallenged carpentry abilities in that “can’t be too hard to do” kind of way. Mike needs to replace five deck planks and starts by removing the deck screws with his shiny new drill. Hands on hips, he looks down at the now gaping hole and gives himself a thumbs up. New deck planks will be cut to size with the skill saw Mike’s kids bought him last Father’s Day. First cut, while a bit shaky, goes not too bad. Second one better and by the time the fifth and last cut, Mike is so pumped he has visions of adding a roof over the deck or maybe a whole new addition. The saw rips through the final plank and Mike lets out a loud “yes” which quickly turns into a scream as the saw rips through Mike’s jeans and into his thigh. In his excitement, he neglected to take his finger completely off the trigger and when he brought the saw to his side, the weight of it
caused it to re-engage. Skill saw cuts are not pretty. The doctor struggles with sewing up the ragged, uneven skin and tells Mike he was “bloody lucky no arteries got cut”. Down the street, Stuart wants to replace some broken pickets and fires up his hockey buddy’s skill saw, only to wonder if the ear splitting sound and smoke means the blade is dull. Contractor Neighbour (CN), partaking of some R & R on his own deck, stomps over to see what the noise is all about. A quick assessment reveals the blade is not only as dull as can be, but had been put in backward. Stuart borrows a sawszall from this neighbour, and after being given a short lesson from CN happily continues his project. Word quickly spreads through the neighbourhood about Mike’s injury and his subsequent power tool phobia. Stuart hears the story, and rubbing his hands together, heads over to Mike’s. He’s planning to finish his basement and is short a few tools. (Based on two true stories, names changed to protect the tool challenged) Submitted by: Menno Dueck, Ask Menno Consulting, Dueck Enterprises Inc. 250-426-5460 www.dueckenterprises.com

OBITUARY
HARASIUK, Shaun Tyler January 11, 1984 - November 16, 2013 In the early morning hours of Saturday, November 16, 2013. Shaun Tyler Harasiuk passed away suddenly of natural causes in Cranbrook at the age of 29 years. He was the youngest son of Audrene and Detlef Harasiuk. Shaun was born January 11, 1984 and grew up here in Cranbrook, BC. His parents raised him as a bush baby, so his love for the outdoors became his roots. He was always exceptional in school and rarely came home with less than an A. Shaun always lived his life to the fullest. Everything he did, he did to the extreme, whether it was hunting, fishing, riding his motor bike or mud bogging. He loved riding with his buddies and said he couldn't hold a candle to a few of them. His brother Kelly said this about Shaun, "Shaun was an awesome man! Misunderstood by most because he would red line every emotion available, such as loving, sadness, fighting, laughter and anger." He was always there to help a friend in need. His dad wrote this: "Today in tears, I wonder why, Why my beautiful son had to die? His life was taken He was yet so young His independence had just begun." Shaun was predeceased by his grandfather Allen Pocha, grandmother Elva (Pocha) Hinch, by his grandfather Alex Harasiuk and grandmother Charlotte Harasiuk; his uncles Red (Carl) Pocha, Gerald Pocha and Lloyd Pocha, his aunt Diane Bailey and his cousin Ione Clark. He leaves to mourn his mother and father, Audrene and Detlef Harasiuk and his brother Kelly (Chelsey) Harasiuk. He has a very large family with many aunts, uncles and cousins. He also has an extraordinary circle of friends and we will always miss his quick wit and his outgoing way. A Memorial Service to celebrate Shaun's life will be held at the Dwelling Place, 2324 - 2nd St. S., Cranabrook on Saturday, November 30, 2013 at 1:30 pm. Condolences may be left for the family at www.markmemorial.com. Mark Memorial Funeral Services in care of arrangements (250) 426-4864
OBITUARY Robert David Graham February 12, 1972-November 19, 2013 It is with heavy hearts we mourn the sudden passing of Robert David Graham, who leaves his loving wife Robyn and the children he was so proud of: Kensington and Dallin. Rob graduated from LV Rogers High School in Nelson, and summers of tree planting led him to enrol in the first Forestry Program at the University of Northern BC in Prince George. In 1999, he moved back to Cranbrook to work as a Forestry Technician. A gentle and loving man, Rob was happiest when he was helping others. His love for giving flourished upon his return to Cranbrook as he joined his dad Fred as a member of the Kinsmen Club and dedicated himself to volunteering for different club events and community projects. It was through the Kin Club that he met, and eventually married, the love of his life, Robyn. As the forest industry changed, Rob embarked on a new career path and realized a dream as he followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the BC Assessment Authority as an Appraiser. A devoted husband and father, Rob’s greatest pride was his family. He had a wonderful sense of humour and enjoyed telling a good story as much as he loved hearing one. A spiritual man, Rob had a passion for his faith and took great joy in welcoming new people to Connect his home church. He loved golf, hockey games and swimming with his kids. Rob had a remarkable ability to support people in whatever way they needed and his kindness, compassion and faith set an example for all. Rob is survived by his wife and children, mother Diane (Bob) Lines, stepmother Donna Graham, along with numerous stepsiblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father Fred Graham. A memorial service for Rob will be held at the Cranbrook Alliance Church on Wednesday, November 27th, 2013 at 1 pm. A trust fund has been set up at East Kootenay Community Credit Union for Robyn and the children. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in Rob’s memory may do so by cheque to “The Family of Rob Graham.” Cheques can be dropped off at East Kootenay Realty, Connect Church and BC Assessment. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service. Condolences for the family can be offered at: www.mcphersonfh.com

Audi’s road ahead paved with more than good intentions 2014 Audi A3 Cabriolet/S3 MONACO: Over the next 12 months or so, consumers are going to be treated to an onslaught of new entries into the premium market. Not to worry, the next wave of German sedans and convertibles are of a more affordable nature. Recently Mercedes Benz introduced their all-new CLA 250 at an eye-popping price of just $34,000 for a sleek and sexy sedan. Next year we will see the introduction of BMW’s new 1-series and 2-Series sedans, coupes and convertibles. Audi has been ahead of the curve as they helped pioneer this entry-level segment with the original, the A3 sportback, sold in Canada for years. The all-new Audi A3 sedan will arrive in March of 2014 and the convertible and more powerful S3 sedan will arrive in the fall of 2014. This week I had a chance to drive both the convertible and S3 in Monte Carlo, a full year ahead of their introduction here. Audi is one of the fastest growing premium brands and a big part of that is the variety of cars they offer. Unfortunately, we will no longer get the sportback, but the fact we get the rest of the line of A3s is exciting for buyers. Looks The A3 is built off a shared platform with VW called MQB. This platform was a significant investment for the VW group as it is lighter, bigger and stronger than the last Golf platform and provides a sturdy basis for the A3 Cabrio and S3. The new Cabriolet is 60kg lighter than the outgoing European model, yet the wheelbase is longer and the interior room and trunk more ample. It could be argued that Audi is building some of the most attractive cars these days and these smaller products still convey the same sense of power and solidity that the bigger products portray. The S3 is especially forceful with a 15mm lower stance than the A3 sedan. The air intakes are bigger with more detail; the side mirrors are highlighted with brushed aluminum; and the rear of the car looks more masculine thanks to chunky exhaust tips. The

The Accord ‘‘plug-in coaxed
me into a little competition with myself every time to achieve maximum fuel efficiency
’’
Keith Morgan
They should just call the 2014 Honda Accord Plug-in Hybrid Sedan the Gas Miser. The car is here for market testing right now but surely, it will see production next year and arrive in dealerships later in the year. And when it does sell your shares in Big Oil. It only sips gas by the spoonful; how else do you account for an easily achievable 4.1 L/100km combined city/highway fuel economy rating? Drive gently around town and you can purr along in all-electric mode for between 20 and 28 kms depending on road conditions. You won’t achieve that all at once, unless it’s the dead of night on a flat road, without any other traffic and green lights all the way. However, it is estimated that if you achieve that 20plus all-electric ride during a 100 km journey, the power unit will consume electricity/ gasoline at an equivalency of around 1.6 L/100km. In truth, it’s hard to put a real life meaning into that number but it is useful when comparing with other similarly equipped cars. But when you look at that number and the low gas/ hybrid combined fuel performance, which enables you to journey 800 kilometres on one tank, it does plant the notion in one’s head that
plug-in hybrids are the way to go for a while before we reach hydrogen fuel cell nirvana. The car is powered by Honda’s first two-motor hybrid system, and uses a new, delightfully named, Earth Dreams 2.0 litre i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine producing 137 horsepower, teamed with a powerful 124-kilowatt (kW) electric motor. Electric driving is supported by a 6.7 kilowatt-hour (kWh) lithiumion (Li-Ion) battery, and total system output is 196 horsepower. If your eyes glazed over at the obligatory statement of power unit specifications, join the club! Fuel economy interests me more. Like every other car with green aspirations that I have driven, it coaxed me into a little competition with myself every time out to achieve maximum fuel efficiency. It’s fun to select EV mode and pull away in the morning in silence, operating as a pure electric vehicle. Even in stop and go traffic, it works well, the regenerative braking keeps topping up the battery. As the speedo creeps up the gas engine kicks in quietly and smoothly. If you select HV mode it operates as a conventional hybrid. I drove a production version of the Ford Fusion Energi a few months ago, which is similarly equipped and impresses equally with its infrequent need to visit the pump. The plug in Toyota Prius is another contender for the green dollar. The Ford is probably the nearest equivalent and sells for around $35,000 so that will be the sticker price to beat. I would like to hear from early adopters of the plug in hybrid technology about their experiences. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Hitch up those snowplows: the white stuff is flying plow is very important as well. You do not want to be freezing and trying to deal with getting a blade on and off your truck. Try the attachment system for yourself at the dealer so you can see firsthand how easy or difficult it is to use. Most snowplow makers use a single halogen light bulb, which are not bright enough; some makers have come

I know I wrote about winter driving last week and the snow and rain began to fall in various parts of the province but please don’t blame me for this first blast of chilly weather. I’m here to help and at the risk of bringing on a blizzard, I thought I would share some information on snow plows. For most people who are just using a plow for clearing their own driveway, a straight-blade
will more than likely be just fine. Snowsport offers a personal plow that is perfect for the homeowner. This system attaches to a front mounted receiver just as a boat trailer would. The U shaped bracket is connected to the receiver and the snow blade rides up and down on these bars to allow for change in the terrain your plowing. Because there are no hydraulics involved, all you do is back up and the snow blade lies back skimming over the surface. When driving forward the blade automatically re-engages for plowing. When you are finished, lift the blade back over the push frame into the transport position. The cost of this option is $1,644. K2 is another brand of snowplow designed for the homeowner with acreage. Designed to work with a front receiver hitch, just like the Snowsport, it simply slides in the receiver and locks in place with a hitch lock. The winch is controlled from inside the cab and will raise or lower the height of the blade. The blade comes with a hardened steel cutting edge scraper, rubber snow deflector,
skid shoes, and plow markers. It is available in 82”, 84”, and 88” lengths. Cost is $1,315. If you use a plow to make money, then you will want to be able to do the job quickly and efficiently, so you may want to go with the multiposition. Multi-position plows are up to 50 percent faster due to the fact that you can reposition the blades to all straightblade positions in addition to the scoop and V positions. This makes the plow adaptable to nearly any job you need to do. When it comes to the composition of the blade you have the choice between steel and poly. The vast majority of snowplows on the market today come with steel blades, although the poly plows are becoming more and more popular. The reason for the growing popularity is that poly is just as strong as steel and maybe stronger. They also have a lower coefficient of friction, which saves on fuel costs and is easier on your vehicle. The poly plows are also saturated with color all the way through so nicks and scratches do not show like they do with steel, plus they do not rust. Attaching and detaching the
out with dual halogen bulbs with the option of upgrading to High Intensity Discharge. These HID lights are four times brighter than standard halogen bulbs and also last ten times as long. Hydraulics is probably the most important part of the plow, along with the controls. Be sure that the hydraulics system is dependable and the
controls are simple and easy to use. Go for quality rather than trying to save a buck. Remember “you get what you pay for” definitely applies here. Cost for these units are $6,000 to $8,000 depending on the model. When it comes to the warranty, be sure to know exactly what you are getting and what the warranty covers. Some only
cover parts, while others cover parts and labor. Warranties are usually either one year or two years; so pay attention to the warranty. Take all of these things into consideration when shopping for a snowplow and you will be able to choose the right one to suit your needs. ian.harwood@drivewaybc.ca

Chevrolet Camaro 2010 to 2012
The 2010 model year Chevrolet Camaro was designed in the USA, engineered in Australia and built in Canada. In addition to a very attractive return-to-roots styling exercise, this Camaro boasts a sophisticated rear-drive chassis, two powerful engine choices and lots more. Initially, the new Camaro came in LS, LT and SS trim levels. The base engine is a Cadillac sourced direct-injection 3.6-litre V6. It can generate 304 horsepower and is mated to either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic. A more potent 6.2-litre V8 engine (from the Corvette) lies under the hood of the SS. When paired with a six-speed manual it can pump out 425 horsepower. A 400 horsepower edition of this engine, with a fuel saving cylinder deactivation system, came paired to the optional six-speed automatic transmission. Chevrolet claimed the Camaro V6 can reach 100 km/ hour in just 6.1 seconds and SS can do it in a tire blistering 4.7 seconds, which is super-car territory. Fuel consumption is see Inspiration page10

Recalls on the 2010 to 2012 Chevrolet Camaro:
could cause chafe damage to the cable insulation. This could create an electrical short, which can result in a no start condition, cause the engine to stall without the ability to restart, or
C EX LEA TE RO ND U ED T
2012 - The primary stage of the driver’s airbag may not deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted).
Dealers will replace the steering wheel airbag coil. 2010 – On vehicles equipped with a V8 engine, the positive battery cable may contact the starter motor housing, which
also less (or better) than you might expect and both engines can run on regular gasoline. The Camaro V6 (auto) is rated at 11.4 L/100km in city and 6.7 L/100km on highway. And the SS (auto) is rated at 13.2 L/100km in city and 7.9 L/100km on highway. Compared to the original ‘67 this Camaro is longer, wider and taller. Bigger wheels, which came in 18-inch to 21inch rim sizes, accounted for much of the height increase. Regardless of the rim size originally ordered, the overall height and tire-to-body gap remained the same, so that it doesn’t detract from the overall look of the car. A major difference between Chevrolet’s Camaro and, its rival, the Ford Mustang is the rear axle and suspension setup. Mustang has a rigid
rear axle and the Camaro uses a more sophisticated independent link system with coil springs attached to an isolated sub-frame. It should result in a better riding and handling car, but that debate rolls on. A driving drawback that’s common to many sports cars is rear visibility and small side mirrors don’t help matters. The Camaro’s trunk is also on the small side but all is forgiven when you step on the gas pedal and hit the road. A Camaro Convertible was introduced for the 2011 model year. Other significant changes included an eight-horsepower output increase for the base 3.6-litre V6 and a “Head-Up” dash display was offered (on 2LT and SS trim levels). The base engine was also upgraded to a new “LFX” 3.6-litre, V6. Although its displacement is the same as the original, this new engine is

lighter and more powerful. A limited edition high-performance Camaro ZL1 arrived in 2012. This car has a supercharged 6.2-litre V8 engine that can produce an insane 580 horsepower … and is collector car certainty. A special 45th Anniversary Package was also offered on Camaro and Camaro SS. The Chevrolet Camaro made it on the Consumer Reports “Recommended’ list of good, reliable cars to buy. Great to look at and a hoot to drive, even the V6 engine editions of this Camaro have more than enough power for most drivers. Prices vary depending on a used vehicle’s condition, mileage, usage and history. A complete mechanical check should always be performed by a reliable auto technician prior to purchase.
