An eye-catching feature at the Castlegar and District Public Library is designed to inspire generosity and compassion this festive season. It’s a ‘giving tree’ and folks are encouraged to load it up with new items to make life more comfortable for some of the less fortunate members of the community. “I saw it first when I was looking at the website of another library,” described librarian Arlee Venier a day after the tree was set up earlier this week. “I thought, ‘what a cool idea,’ then I realized it was quite a popular concept at different schools and libraries around the country. “What a great opportunity for the community to help bring some cheer to someone else during the holiday season.” Those wishing to get into the spirit are invited to bring in new items to the Castlegar and District Public Library; they may include scarves, toques, hats, gloves, mitts, socks, etc., and hang them on the tree. When the tree gets loaded up (and hopefully soon) no worries, they’ll just get busy loading it up again. All of the items will be included in the Christmas food hampers to be distributed on Dec. 21.

City council recently sniffed-out a wind of injustice, and no longer do dog owners or their pooches have to fear. Many families have a pet, and whether it’s a turtle, rat, cat or dog, they often become loved family members. All too frequently they escape. If you live in the boonies it may be just a jaunt in the neighbouring wilderness. If you live in a town or city, dogs, if running loose or at large, are picked-up by an animal control officer. They are then brought to a city pound or town veteri-

nary office and kept there for a certain period of time. In Castlegar the bylaw was 72 hours. If they were not claimed within that time the animal could have le-
gally been euthanized. Although it was not likely, the animal’s demise was a possibility. Castlegar is ahead of the pack by changing its bylaw. Animals are not euthanized but instead will be taken care of until they are reunited with their owners or a new permanent home is found for them. This is a blessing if your pet is an escape artist and whose curiosity may well bring trouble down on them. Maybe your friend who came over for coffee, didn’t properly latch the gate or your pet is adept at turning handles, chewing rope, breaking chains or whatever. They may be be on the prowl. If you
had been one of the smart ones and got a licence for your dog, then you can be notified straight away to come pick up your pooch. If you’re out of town for a week, now an alternate phone number if registered with your licence, can be used to get your dog back home. Castlegar city councillor Debbie McIntosh was a strong supporter of the change in the bylaw. She was contacted by the Castlegar News to get more information. The question was posed as to how many animals had been euthanized in the past. The answer was that no healthy animals had ever been euthanized.

Is Cyberbullying a Problem in Castlegar? Derek Kaye Castlegar News Contributor
Bullying really has not changed since corner field beat-ups with snowballs a half century ago. But today the field is very different. It has no defined corners, can be anonymous, faceless. And the weapons of mass humiliations are not snowballs thrown with good aim, but text messages and grainy film noir embarrassments on video and jpeg photos. These get beamed to satellites and distributed all over the place in milliseconds. What has not changed is the abuse of power from one person over the next, with bystanders watching, doing nothing. The Federal Government is presently tabling legislation that seeks to modernize existing laws so they better address harassment through electronic media. They also want to give new investigative powers to law enforcement to access and contain evidence in digital formats. A recent report from federal and provincial justice ministers concluded that new investigative powers were needed to “ensure that all acts of cyberbullying car-

ried out through the use of new technologies can be effectively investigated and prosecuted.” In this virtual field there are programs and websites that aim at helping victims of bullying, and their parents. A game plan to address the bullying and mitigate the negative impacts can be developed. In British Columbia there is E.R.A.S.E. Expect Respect and a Safe Education strategy. It has a website with help for stu-
dents and their parents in identifying bullying and what one can do about it. Within the website there are numerous helpful videos. The program’s internet address is http://www.erasebullying.ca . Locally there is no doubt bullying exists, but its description and definition may be ambiguous and school officials may be ambivalent. The topic is an understandably delicate one, that school officials and those
affected are hesitant to go on record with comments about. SD 20 Superintendent Greg Luterbach, however, was contacted for comment and reposnded via email with the following: “Cyberbullying is a challenge for all of us – parents, schools and students. Like other districts we are working in conjunctions with the provincial ERASE (Expect respect and a safe education) bullying initiative to reduce this and all forms of bullying. Cyberbullying is often not as obvious as other forms of bullying but it is still critical to be dealt with. Now that most youth are connected everywhere and all the time we need to educate our students to be responsible users of technology. “Students need to refuse to participate in any of the forms of cyberbullying. Strategies for students to use include: not responding; not to retaliate; to save the evidence; to talk to trusted adults including their principal; use the tools in the various social media to block the bully; remaining civil; being a friend and not a bystander and never be a bully.”

The 26 teachers participated in an open discussion with Managing Director of Operations, Kevin Anderson and Human Resources Manager John Belland about the employment and apprenticeship programs for trades in our operation. We watched a ‘Mercer Pulp 101’ video and then toured the mill site guided by some of our Engineering and Lab employees: Doug Sayer, Joyce Van Bynen, Ralph Lunn and Rory Ralph. Broadband matters
For quite some time forward-thinking people and groups have been keen on getting us up to speed with the best digital capability available. Although in past years there may have been a certain percentage of Columbia Basin residents who balked at the need for broadband Internet service, for example, it’s not hard to imagine that percentage taking a big plunge more recently. A member of the Columbia Basin Broadband Committee reached out to the Castlegar News last week with a proposal – to craft a series of four submissions to the newspaper, outlining some history behind its efforts, progress made to date, and work yet to be accomplished. The crucial nature of up-to-date connectivity has only grown as time has elapsed, and it’s no overstatement to suggest that a modern digital endowment (or lack thereof) can make or break a community. With that in mind the committee invites us to take a look at Olds, Alberta, a community that has taken steps to acquire a massive broadband boost through its community-owned Internet service provider. This can only mean good things, economically and otherwise. It’s better for every reason a person values the web, and particularly for the person who chooses to work from home. What a way for smaller communities to stem the population drain where traditional sources of employment are in decline. It’s nothing short of a blueprint for cities and towns to use in reinventing themselves. Tele-medicine is another development which could be faster in arriving thanks to the technology available. Look for in-depth information as the submissions are published in the coming weeks. We want to hear from you.

Make that List How’s that winter cold/flu going? The reason I ask is that I just happen to have the never-ending cold. Nothing lethal, as you know, but a real inconvenience, especially when in the store and I’m hacking my brains out. Talk about dirty looks from other shoppers. But, hey, I know how they feel as I’ve been annoyed by others in the same situation, coughing all over the produce. It’s not often I get a cold, and I’m seriously not going to bore you with my cold for the rest of this column. I just needed a lead-in to what I really wanted to write about and that is sending men shopping. Yup, I can see you ladies nodding your heads as you’re reading this and I can also see the men cringing. Despite lists and detailed verbal instructions, it seems that something either gets forgotten, or the wrong item is brought home. The poor lambs, they really do try, but sometimes? Case in point; about two summers ago I was camping and could feel the early symptoms of a cold coming on. My husband just happened to be going up to the store and so I asked him if he could pick me up some vitamin C and some Echinacea in the hopes that a little preventative medicine would help avert a full blown cold.

So, off he goes with his buddy to the store to get the required items. I should have known that something happened at the store when he and his buddy got out of the truck and his buddy was laughing like crazy. Two renowned Canadian scientists will speak in Castlegar at noon on Friday Dec. 6, answering questions and concerns on genetically engineered (GE, also called genetically modified or GM) foods and human health. As well, they will be speaking at 7 p.m. at Nelson’s United Church. The Selkirk College Student Union (SCSU) Enviro Club is excited to announce they’ve partnered with Nelson’s Kootenay Co-op, the Society for a GE Free BC and the Greenpeace Vancouver Local Group to bring us “Genetically Engineered Foods and Human Health: A Cross-Canada Speaker’s Tour”, featuring Drs Thierry Vrain and Chiv Chopra. Might GMO’s have anything to do with a rise in allergic reactions to foods? Antibiotic resistance? Hormonal imbalances such as diabetes? Does anyone really know for sure? It is that time of year again when the Community Harvest Food Bank makes it appeal to the greater community. The food bank works hard to offer a variety of different services to those members of our community who may require a little bit of extra help. Some of these services include, but are not limited to, the provision of the following: hot meals, food hampers, emergency housing/clothing, paid medical expenses, utility bills, rent, and damage deposits. All of our programs are run by volunteers and our space is donated by St David’s Anglican Church. We are a member of the BC Food Bank Association and on average we make nearly 600 meals and hand out up to 150 hampers every month. The Food Bank relies on community donations and is grateful for the huge support that it has received in the past. The success of our agency is because of you, our community, our busi-

Dr. Thierry Vrain is a retired soil biologist and genetic engineer who -- after a 30-year career with Agriculture Canada – is now very worried about what GE technology holds for our future. Dr. Shiv Chopra, a former Health Canada senior scientific advisor who blew the whistle on inadequate testing of Monsanto’s GE bovine growth hormone (rBGH), will explain why he believes the regulatory process can be compromised to serve corporate interests.

Café Michael to Castlegar, sadly: ‘So long for now...’ It is with the of heaviest of heart that I am closing our restaurant, Cafe Michael in Castlegar. My spouse/business partner and I have committed to taking over my parents' restaurant in Trail as they have served enough time (and food) in the restaurant business, and are currently in their mid-60s in age. We also reside in Trail, our children are enrolled in excellent day care and elementary school facilities and frankly, we are
exhausted with the long drive home, seven days a week, in separate vehicles...a long day at work then the monotonous drive makes for risky driving. We love our business but we love our daughters more. We are finding that the older they get, the more they need us and they are our ultimate priority. Thank you, Castlegar, for a great childhood and now, a great business opportunity. There are so
many admirable citizens here and I am proud to have met such generous, caring and humble individuals. In the three and a half years that we have had our restaurant here, we have made new lifetime friends and learned invaluable life lessons. We do intend to open a smaller, more easyto-manage restaurant, perhaps express-style, once we have transitioned well enough
in Trail and have actually identified a few possible locations. I sincerely hope that our current staff can join us on this part of our journey. As for our current location, we are trying to co-ordinate a colleague to replace us; they had expressed interest a couple of months ago and we have had a few discus-
sions but they have not yet committed. I have personally enjoyed dining in their former restaurant and fully support their occupancy. We had intended on closing mid- to late-January but insufficient staffing over the New Year is prompting an earlier closure. Our last day of service will be Christmas

Rotary Christmas Trees On Sale

Nine members of the Selkirk Chamber Orchestra have come together as “Camerata Strings” to prepare a concert of glorious string music on Sunday, Dec. 8, 1:30 p.m. at the Castlegar United Church on Merry Creek Rd. This concert is part of the TD Bank Sunday Concert Series organized by the Kootenay Gallery. Led by violinist Wendy Herbison, and local teachers, cellist Jeff Faragher, violinists Josette Laforge and Martine denBok and along with violist Miranda Hughes, the group will perform some of the world’s best loved string music.
Other members are violinist Vic Neufeld, cellist Bronwyn LeBlanc and bassist, Alex Nichol. All belong to the Symphony of the Kootenays and Lena Tuiz. On the program will be Barber’s Adagio for Strings, and the popular Elgar Serrenad. Rounding out the program will be the first movement of the famous Octet by Mendelssohn, a movement of a Dvorak Quintet, Purcell’s Chaconne in g minor and the Capriol Suite by Peter Warlock. Thanks to sponsors TD Canada Trust and Columbia Basin Trust. Tickets are $12 for Gallery members and $15 for general admission.

Castlegar Tradition Members of the Castlegar Rotary Club unloaded trees this past weekend for their annual Christmas tree sale. As always, the Club only offers Canadian-grown trees. This year, the natural trees come from the East Kootenays, and the cultured trees from Chilliwack, as well as a few from a new supplier in the Slocan Valley. The sale has been a popular club tradition for over 25 years. All revenue from the sales goes back into various Rotary projects. Sales begin this year on Saturday, November 30 at the Complex Arena. The Club thanks Andy Roberts of MTI for delivering the trees, and the Complex staff for their help with the set-up. Musical Achievers The Registered Music Teachers of the Trail/Castlegar Branch hosted a Canada Music Week piano recital on November 18 at the Muriel Griffiths Recital Room in the Greater Trail Community Centre. The Castlegar Skating Club is carving up the ice practicing as part of the Canskate and Starskate programs. The club is part of the Kootenay region of the B.C./Yukon section of Skate Canada. Canskate has levels 1-6 and is concerned with the development of basic skating skills. It involves a program of continuous movement, is repetitive, and involves skaters’ developing skills of balance, agility and control. It is a new, revamped program that has operated as pilot projects for the last two years and concentrates more on longterm athlete development than figure skating alone. It develops skaters for all sports on ice including ringette, hockey, speed
skating and figure skating. It also prepares skaters for the Starskate program also administered by Skate Canada, which is a figure skating only program. The Castlegar Rebels KIJHL hockey team is participating as program assistants in the Canskate program. Rachel Stewart along with Andrea Poznikoff are the coaches in both of the programs. Stewart has 14 years coaching experience, mostly coaching in Nelson. Andrea Poznikoff is only 17 and bringing a fresh face to the world of coaching. The Starskate program has four components which are the disciplines of free skate, dance, skills, and interpretative each with its set of levels. Rachel Stewart explained, “Free skate discipline involves jumps, spins and routines;
dance is set patterns to music; skills are set patterns without music; interpretive is what you interpret the music to be.” Skate Canada judges come to the Kootenays for test days where skaters can complete levels, receive awards and move on to the next level. Testing is important to the young skaters, because in completing the different levels they receive recognition for all their hard work. They have a test day coming up December 7 in Nakusp. There are two Starskate competitions coming up and they are the 2014 West Kootenay Invitational January 17 to 19 in Rossland and the 2014 Kootenay Region Championships January 31 to February 2 in Fruitvale. Castlegar’s KIJHL squad added left-winger Evan Kite from White Rock to its lineup and Saturday November 23 was his first home game and win. The game started with a goal for the Rockets at only 45 seconds into the first period by Tanner Watt (unassisted). But the Golden Rockets were quickly outshot and outplayed as the Rebels had three goals under their belts by the end of the period. Diego Bartlett scored twice (at 15:18 and10:50) assisted by Kody Disher for both (with assists also going to Matt Reed and Seth Schmidt). Period one was clock full of penalties; a total of eight including roughing after the whistle to Rebels Matt Reed and Rockets’ Bowen Alcock with 9:50 left in the first period. The second frame was dominated by the Rebels who scored three times by Jeremy McNeil (Ed Lindsey) at 15:23, Darren Medeiros his second (Chase Reddin) at 8:55 and Diego Bartlett ( Ed Lindsey and Kody Disher) with 7:20 to go, to give him the hat-

trick and put the Rebels into a comfortable 6-1 lead. The Rebels were out-shooting and out-hustling the Rockets. Period three was somewhat controlled by the Rockets as they scored twice - Cole McKechney (Daniel Dahlin) and Michael Anderson (Ian Desrosier). But their timing and their ignition was off as the Rockets sputtered to a loss. With the win the Rebels solidified their grip on third
place in the Kootenay Conference’s Neil Murdoch Division. Castlegar trailed the Nelson Leafs (44 pts as of Sunday night) and Beaver Valley Nitehawks (32 pts). The Rebels enjoyed a cushion over the Grand Forks Border Bruins (23 pts) and the Spokane Braves (19 points). Next up for the Rebels is a home game versus the North Okanagan (Armstrong) Knights this Saturday night at 7:30.

Reduce so that sauce is concentrated, and about ¼ original volume. Reduce to simmer to keep warm. Make an empty space in center of pan, to receive the steaks. -Rub steaks with olive oil, and liberally season with salt and freshly ground coarse black pepper. -Preheat grill (outdoor or indoor) to med-high for at least 5 minutes, with lid closed. -Sear the steaks for 2 minutes on each side, then place them in the pan, surrounded by mushrooms. -Pour the garlic-infused oil with butter, from roasting the garlic, over each steak. -Immediately place in the oven for 6½ to 7 minutes for medium rare. -Remove from oven, cover with foil, and rest for 5 minutes, for juices to settle in meat. -Serve steaks, smothered in mushrooms. -Serve with roasted red potatoes.

-Preheat oven to 350°F. -Roast an entire head of garlic by cutting off top, placing in a small Pyrex baking ramekin. Coat top with EVOO, salt, & pepper. -Bake until the cloves are soft and golden, about 1 hour. -Remove from the oven and let sit until cool enough to handle. -Squeeze each head of garlic to expel the cloves into a bowl. -SAVE THE OIL and add ½ tablespoon of butter. Set on counter to hold. -Increase oven temperature to 400°F. -Meanwhile, bring steaks to room temperature and sauté mushrooms. -To sauté mushrooms, melt butter and EVOO in a large conventional (not non-stick) sauté pan over medium to med-high heat. A strong immune system is the body’s best defense against colds and flu. Good nutrition is the key to building your body’s defenses. Help fight common bugs by filling your diet with healthy foods. Load up on fruits and vegetables. They contain powerful antioxidants, vitamins and minerals which will build up your immune system to help fight off illness. Choose brightly coloured or dark green fruits and veggies for the most antioxidants. Aim for 7 to 8 servings per day. One serving equals one small to medium sized piece of fruit
or vegetable or half a cup of chopped. Digestive health plays an important role in preventing sickness. Normally, your body contains “friendly” bacteria, or flora, that help fight off any “bad” bacteria trying to gain access to your system. Diets high in refined sugar, frequent antibiotic use, and everyday stress can disrupt this healthy balance of “friendly” versus “bad” bacteria, leaving one more vulnerable to sickness. You can help restore healthy digestive flora by eating foods that naturally contain good bacteria and/or by taking a probiotic supplement. Probiotics can
be found naturally in fermented foods such as yogurt, buttermilk, miso, tempeh, and fresh sauerkraut. Vitamin D is also thought to play an important role in strengthening the immune system. Health Canada recommends 400-800 IU per day depending on age. Some other national health organizations recommend higher doses. For instance the Canadian Cancer Society recommends 1000 IU per day for adults during the fall and winter months. Dietary sources of vitamin D include milk, fortified yogurts, fortified soy beverage, salmon, tuna, sardines and
egg yolks. Talk to your health care provider to learn if you are getting enough Vitamin D. Of course nutrition is only part of the solution. Exercise is also a powerful way to bolster your immune system. Among the many benefits of exercise is stress reduction. Stress takes a significant toll on our immune system so it’s important to take time just for you. Get out for a brisk walk, bike ride, take part in yoga or any physical activity that you enjoy!

Different types of tires make a difference
Drivers rarely think of the tires on their vehicles until they have a flat. But the type of tires on your vehicle can impact its performance. When choosing tires for their vehicles, drivers should consider a host of factors, including the terrain and driving conditions vehicles are likely to encounter.

All-season tires The most common type of tire and arguably the best known is the standard all-season tire. Many vehicles come equipped with these tires, which are designed to be versatile enough to grip the road in various conditions. They are commonly made of a harder rubber that will not wear out quickly and will retain their tread. Most day-to-day driving can be done on all-season tires.
High-performance tires People who live in dry climates or drive sports and racing cars can benefit from high-performance tires. These tires are specifically designed to grip the road better and offer superior handling under higher speeds. Because highperformance tires are made of a softer rubber compared to standard tires, they will not last as long as all-season tires.
Snow tires People who live in snowy, icy conditions will benefit from the use of snow tires. These tires are designed with special treads to offer more traction in slippery conditions. The rubber used to manufacture the tire can remain flexible even at extremely low temperatures. Winter tires are best reserved for extreme weather and not used all season long because they will wear out more quickly than others. They may not have the same level of traction on clear roads. In some cases, winter tires may have metal studs included to enhance traction in icy situations. People who do not want to switch tires when cold weather arrives sometimes invest in snow chains that improve traction on standard tires.

Car battery care in extreme weather Few things can be more frustrating than jumping into the driver’s seat on a frosty morning, turning the key in the ignition and failing to hear the engine roar to life. Frigid weather can cause trouble with a car’s battery. Some drivers do not understand why, but getting the facts can help people avoid having to deal with dead batteries on cold winter days.

Educating / enriching consumers Some of my best shopping experiences have included an element of education — who doesn’t like learning more about something we already have an interest in? Luckily for those of us who enjoy wines and spirits, producers and retailers of those products seem especially good at educating. Educating? Well, isn’t that really what tasting samples at a winery is all about? We are learning about our own tastes and preferences, not just about the particular products being sampled. And, at many wineries, those pouring the samples are especially good at providing information that heightens our awareness. Over time, these visits combine into what amounts to a wine appreciation course. Retailers have also caught on, perhaps not to the extent they might, but still, when one visits places like the BC Wine Information Centre in Penticton, Kelowna’s Discover Wines and BC Wineguys in Nelson, it’s hard to imagine not coming out having learned something. Knowledgeable staff, tastings and events help educate customers and build a loyalty that doesn’t happen with typical transaction-based businesses. I always look to Calgary when I think of the gold standard business when it comes to customer education. Over the course of two decades, Willow Park Wines & Spirits has set a high bar (pun intended) when it comes to attracting, educating and maintaining its customer base. Many years ago, when I first walked into the Macleod Trail building, I was in awe. If the large main floor area wasn’t enough to impress, another small nook was filled with an amazing selection of sparkling wines and a lower level was filled with premium wines. Half of that space was, and is, a climate controlled room where customers head for ultra-premium wines— Brunello di Montalcino, Baro-

La Dolce Vita lo, Bordeaux, Burgundy, Napa Valley are all represented. It’s a rare place to see Chateau d’Yqem and Sassiccaia and Chateau Latour wines. On the mezzanine above is a space that will seat perhaps 60 people at tables, with a full-service kitchen in behind. Countless events involving wine, beer and spirits, usually with food, having been held in this space—there is hardly a day throughout the year when Willow Park staff, suppliers and friends aren’t busy with a special event of one sort or another. Angela and I have attended more tastings in that space than I can remember. One memorable evening we joined a dozen others in a boardroom upstairs to learn about the art of blending Bordeaux wine varieties. Leading the seminar was Chateau St. Jean winemaker Margo Van Staaveren, who once was named Winemaker of the Year in the US. A brief scroll through the events calendar for the remainder of 2013 is a perfect example of the range of functions designed, in large part, to educate. In the last two weeks of November, customers can sign up to attend events featuring Spanish wines, Absolut vodka, scotch whisky, tequila, holiday drink mixology, winter spirits cocktails, beers of

the world, single malts from Scottish islands, Port and chocolate fondue, wine from Portugal, the launch of a new wine brand from Napa, and fortified wines from Spain and Portugal. It’s a crazy schedule, but somehow they make it all work. Product selection and customer education isn’t the only focus of the business, though. Willow Park is a leader in corporate responsibility to its community, too. On November 9, I attended the 20th annual gala fundraiser that raised hundreds of thousands for a charitable cause. Each year four consecutive nights are dedicated solely to raising money for the Vintage Fund, which distributes the proceeds to selected charities. In some years I have attended all four—a whisky festival, beer bash, California wine night (it used to be Canadian wine night) and the gala, which features dozens of great wines, a fabulous selection of food from some of Calgary’s best chefs, and live and silent auctions. With all proceeds from the night designated to help rebuild pedestrian bridges washed out in last summer’s floods, auction bidding was fast and furious. The evening’s theme was Viva Las Vegas and many of the approximately 300 in attendance were decked out in glitzy regalia. One, whose home-made costume was covered with playing cards, was awarded $10,000 for her favourite charity. My personal favourite, a lovely cigarette girl who looked like she’d stepped out of the 60s, was a finalist. Willow Park Wines & Spirits has this whole business thing figured out. It’s a model that others would do well to explore.

Здравствуйтеуважаемый читатель! Меня зовут Настя- или по-английски Стэйси. Мне 11 лет-моя родина-Россия. В Канаду я переехала в конце июля 2013 года. Пейзажи Канады удивили меня красатой! Горы, реки, озёра-в общем всё что вызывает улыбку на лице. Долго пейзажами не подивилась-сентябрь-школа. Я так переживала-я очень плохо говорю по английски. А оказалось-попала в школу в который изучают английский, русский и французкий. Теперь я неплохо говорю по-английски-у меня появились друзья! Что же не понравлось? Да всё понравилось! Мне кажется, каждому русскому бы понравилось! А теперь расскажу немножко о России, Екатеринодаре. Город очень красивый, особенно его центр. Памятник Екатерине второй, фонтан, а если не полениться, и пройти одну улицу, можно увидеть выступление –Казаков-Войнов! Это просто зрелище! Такая постановка, прямо как балет! Только бесплатный, и выступают они только по выходным. И всё-таки-что мне нравится больше-Россия, или Канада? Я промолчу. Это разные вещи-равнина и горы, моря и озёра, дома и домишки, поля и леса. Alice Sanford
The family of Alice Sanford wishes to announce her death at Silver Kettle Village in Grand Forks on Friday, November 22, 2013. Alice was blessed with 86 years of life and died surrounded by family and care givers of Silver Kettle Village. Alice was born in Calgary, Alberta to James and Edith Heslop and in 1952 married Thornton (Terry) Sanford. As a registered nurse, Alice worked in Yellowknife, Trail, Castlegar and retired as the Administrator of the former Raspberry-Robson Lodge. In 1959 Alice and Terry moved to Robson and enjoyed 53 years together until his death in 2012. Left to mourn are her 3 children, Dawne (Gordon) Parslow of Dawson Creek, Lynne (Don) Bollinger of Lac La Biche, James (Grace) Sanford of Kitimat, 5 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place with interment at the Robson cemetery to follow at a later date.

Dennis Michael Prokopetz passed away suddenly at his residence in Trail, BC on Thursday, November 14, 2013. He was born on July 29, 1952
He was predeceased by his father John Walter Prokopetz, his mother Nellie and his beloved wife Veronika. He is survived by his brothers, David (Gay) of Trail, BC, Donald (Laura and three daughters Annie, Emily and Mary) of Surrey, BC and Robert (Lise and son Kobe) of Surrey, BC. Dennis enjoyed music, fishing, motorcycles and his pets. He spent most of his adult life as a mechanical service technician for cars, motorcycles and small engines. He was personally sought out by many in the Kootenays for his expertise. He was known by all who knew him as a generous giver of his time and help. He was a loyal friend, employee and brother. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, December 7th, 2013 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services “Carberry’s Chapel”, 1298 Pine Ave. Trail, BC. Gwen Ziprick of Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services™ has been entrusted with the arrangements.
