LKB raises homelessness awareness BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor As part of the National Addictions Awareness Week, six members of the Lower Kootenay Band spent the night in Millennium Park on Friday, with the temperature dropping to -12 C. “In some areas of the coun-
try, that’s a warm night,” said Chief Jason Louie. Army cadets loaned Arctic sleeping bags to the event, which raised awareness of homelessness, which may be a result of addictions. “A lot of the individuals had lives where they had a home, vehicles and a stable job,” said Louie. “We wanted to empa-

thize with them, and experience what they experience on a daily and nightly basis.” For at least one member of the group, the exercise had its desired effect. “As someone who hasn't experienced sleeping in the cold, or even without a roof over my head, I felt what it was like to be in the cold, to feel the

hard surface I slept on,” said Lisa Three Feathers. “It has opened my eyes a lot. I pray for all those who are without shelter to be looked after and watched over and not to have to go through this much longer. I feel for what homeless people go through everyday. This was just one night, but one that I hope brings awareness to all.”
With less than three weeks until this year’s Christmas hampers are packed, the Creston Ministerial Association is reminding the community that now is the time to donate. “We can empathize with those who feel a lot of stress at Christmas,” said association president Tom Greentree, pastor of Erickson Covenant Church. “This is for them to feel the joy of the season. This is an opportunity for us as a community to extend that joy.” Over 450 hampers are expected — 485 were requested last year — and will be packed with food and much more on Dec. 16, ready for pickup on Dec. 17. Many local businesses are already collecting nonperishable food items, some have made cash donations and others are collecting cash, including the Advance, which adds donors’ names to the Community Greeting Card in the Christmas issue. A collection will also be taken at a 7 p.m. Dec. 16 carol festival at Prince Charles Theatre. Also included are non-food items such as books, through the Creston Valley Public Library and Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy’s Book Under Every Tree campaign, which collects new books at schools and several businesses. Hampers Locally-written play, Almost Golden, When the lights go up for the first performance of Almost Golden at Prince Charles Theatre on Dec. 5, it will mark the culmination of more than 14 months of work by Suzanne Chubb and Jason Smith. Both are familiar faces from Footlighters Theatre Society productions, but this is their first foray into playwriting. The project started with a phone call. “Jason called me up one day,” said Chubb. “We were in one play together,” Smith jumped in, “and at some point we just had a casual conversation about writing—” Chubb steers him back. “You phoned me.” “So I phoned Suzanne a little while after we had done that play and asked, ‘Do you want to get together?’ And of course, 90 per cent of the time these things go nowhere — 99 per cent of the time.” Chat with the two in the same room and it isn’t difficult to imagine how it must have gone once they started writing. They regularly interrupt each other and finish each other’s sentences with remarkable ease. “Jason and I met and he said he had an idea,” Chubb recalled. “Then he said, ‘Do you have an idea?” She did. “ ‘You know, we’re dealing right now with my husband’s dad, who has dementia. He’s starting to drift a little. So why don’t we do a play about some parents who have this problem and they’ve got these kids, and then for some reason they all get together? And then they have to deal with these things,’ ” she told Smith. “So that was basically it.” Smith liked the idea and they jumped right into the collaboration. “We started talking more about that and about an hour later we had a basic concept,” he said. “And before she left that day we had A to Z, a skeleton.” That was in September 2012. “Basically we just worked on it any day we were available,” Chubb said. “Before Christmas we had the play written. So we worked really diligently. And then from there it’s been refined, edited.” Chubb’s personal experiences with family members and her 20 years as a nurse at Creston Valley Hospital provided plenty of firsthand experience to draw from. But there is another aspect to playwriting. “Criticism,” she said. “You have to learn to put ego aside. Because when you write things, of course, it’s your baby and you love and want to nurture it. You also learn with writing that just because you’ve written it doesn’t mean it’s good or that it makes sense. You have to learn to take that baby

and take a scalpel to it and subtract what you really think doesn’t work. “We’ve worked really hard at refining it, but it’s just like anything else. When it’s out for public display you’re going to have people that like it and people that don’t. And that’s OK, because in the long run, I’m very pleased with what we’ve done. I think that our hard work shows.” Smith said that there is a challenge in finding the right balance to dealing with suggestions. “There have been three main reactions we’ve had to suggestions,” he said. “We could either ignore it, or we could totally, absolutely listen and say they’re right — let’s delete or let’s change — or the other one, which I think we really liked doing, was finding a compromise. Sometime that meant not changing the actual thing, but changing the leadup to give it more context, so that it made more sense.” Almost Golden focuses on Marvin (played by Kelly Mehrer), a retired miner, and Hazel Schooling (Stephanie Sweet), who live in a small B.C. town. Their daughter, Marta McLucky (Chubb), her husband, Andy (Smith), and their son, Sam (Logan Thompson), come to visit from their home in a nearby town. Making the long drive from the Coast are Marvin and Hazel’s son, Steven (Warren Bruns), his wife, Rachel (Starla Ek), and their daughter, Tiffany (Sam Mintenko). The family’s bond is tested by appearances from Dave Murphy (Marc Archambault), Chad Harvey (Jordan Koop), Maude Edison-Stapleton-Gilmore (Debra Mehrer) and Verna Reid (Lynn Adderley), each of whom brings to light information

that has a profound effect on the future. Brian Lawrence, who is directing Almost Golden, said he has enjoyed being part of what will be, in theatrical terms, a world premiere. “The characters were pretty well defined right at the beginning,” he said. “The nice thing about doing this is that the authors are right here. If there was anything confusing or anything that needed to be tweaked or altered somehow, the authors are here to fix it. It’s not like other plays where a line might not make sense but you are obligated to use it and have to come up with your own interpretation. In some ways it made it much easier.” And working to refine and clarify the script is all part of the process, he said. “Anytime you do a play the first time, the script that you start rehearsing shouldn’t be the same as what is seen on stage,” said Lawrence. The play will also be presented in the spring in the Kootenay Zone of Theatre BC’s annual festival, Centre Stage, which will be held in Creston May 27-31. The “best of the best” plays go on to the Mainstage provincial festival in July. “It’s gratifying to know this is happening,” Chubb said. “I actually didn’t think anyone would want anything to do with it, just because we wrote it.” Almost Golden will run at Prince Charles Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 5-7. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors, available at Black Bear Books, Kingfisher Used Books and at the door. From page 1 Children’s toys can also be donated at Pyramid Building Supplies — simply visit the store, pull a tag with an age and gender from the Christmas tree, buy an appropriate gift, and return it unwrapped to Pyramid. The ministerial association purchases gift cards for items that can’t sit indefinitely in the hamper, such as turkeys, and the program usually costs close to $25,000, so cash donations are vital to its success. Excess funds are held by the ministerial association, and distributed to those in need of help with medical and dental expenses. “The monies that come in at Christmas we spend through the whole year,” said Greentree. “We steward them on behalf of the community.” Packing the hampers takes a lot of work and organization — about 30 people are needed to sort donations when they are dropped off on the Monday morning (donation pickups can be arranged by calling Redeemer Lutheran Church at 250-4289100), with 100 needed to start packing at 1 p.m. About 40 are needed to assist with pickup from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on the Tuesday afternoon. Volunteer co-ordinator Shelley Stickel-Miles will be on hand at the Creston and District Community Complex so volunteers can check in with her and be assigned to the area they can best serve. Anyone who needs a hamper is welcome to receive one, and can easily sign up at local churches and social organizations. In the past, some have taken offence to being signed up for one without their knowledge, so it’s important to be sure the help is wanted. “They have to know they’re getting a hamper,” said Greentree. “They have to be OK with it, so you need to ask them.” And while the ministerial association oversees and organizes the hamper program, Greentree stresses that it isn’t strictly a religious venture. “This isn’t just churches,” he said. “It’s the community of Creston. This is a caring community that wants to help those who find themselves in tough spots.”

SD8 says no to CUPE increases BY KIRSTEN HILDEBRAND Nelson Star
The School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) board is the last holdout in the province when it comes to approving the CUPE bargaining provincial framework savings plan and that didn’t sit well with several union members present at the Nov. 19 board meeting. CUPE workers in the district attended the meeting held at the Nelson board office, some via teleconference from Creston, with interest and apparent frustration, asking the board why it was the only district in the province not settling negotiations. “We’re the only district in the province standing up,” responded acting chair Rebecca Huscroft. CUPE locals throughout the province are in negotiations with local boards after the province negotiated a wage increase averting a September strike. The Ministry of Education is asking local boards to find the money within their existing budgets without impacting core services. The Kootenay Lake school board is asking CUPE to advocate with them and write a letter to the ministry. “For [the ministry] to say we can’t cut services to pay for an increase is a bit of a joke,” said Huscroft addressing employees’ concerns. “We are the only district in the province advocating right now and we understand how this must look to you guys.” Huscroft said trustees value the work of CUPE employees but increases shouldn’t come “on the backs of the board and the district.” See FUNDING page 5

Nativity scene exhibit returning to LDS church BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
After a two-year break, a popular tradition is returning to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when the crèche exhibit opens on Friday for two weekends. With close to 300 nativity scenes on display, gentle lighting and seasonal music, the exhibit is an excellent start to the Christmas season. “It creates an atmosphere of Christmas,” said Eric Viklund, one of the organizers. “I think people catch that spirit.” The idea developed in Creston following an exhibit that started in an Ann Arbor, Mich., LDS church in the early 1980s, eventually running for 25 years. “It developed into quite a show that everyone raved about,” said Viklund. The local crèche exhibit previously ran from 2000-2010 and started out with about 125 displays, but that number quickly grew. The nativities now boast a wide range of origins (including Israel, Africa, Peru, Paraguay and Italy), styles (an Arctic-themed crèche is complete with sled dogs and caribou) and sizes (miniature to two feet). Some are heirlooms, dating back to the 1930s. “They’ve become very precious to their owners,” said Viklund.
Some of the crèches have components made locally. One local carver used a piece of fir bark to create a barn, and Viklund created a cave instead of a stable, using rocks from a now-defunct Nelson quarry — the source of the white granite used in the LDS Cardston Alberta Temple, built from 1913-1923. With many shapes and sizes, it takes a large team of volunteers to make the exhibit happen. About a dozen committees deal with everything from electrical to ironing tablecloths to setting up the crèches. “They’re not just laying them out — they'll put them on a raised platform and set them on an accent cloth that complements that particular nativity scene,” said Viklund. The exhibit has proven popular with all ages — groups from area schools, Swan Valley Lodge and Crest View Village are visiting by appointment — and an activity room has been set up for children to make their own nativities from wood and paper. Although the exhibit is held at the Mormon church, it draws in visitors of all denominations because the crèches — which have been accepted from nonLDS loaners for the first time this year — are based on something they all have in common. “In this day and age, we’ve sort of

gotten away from the Christ aspect of the season,” said Viklund. “We want to get back to the roots of Christmas.” Admission is free. The exhibit runs 1-8 p.m. Nov. 29 and 30, and Dec. 6 and 7, and 1-6 p.m. Dec. 1 and 8 at the LDS church located at 101 36th Ave. N. in Erickson.

Funding From page 4 “We stand 100 per cent behind CUPE getting a wage increase,” she said. “But we want to send a message about how do we address reduced funding year after year.” Natasha Morley, who speaks for the local union, said CUPE is aware of the school board’s request to join them in calling on the government to fund the wage increases and oppose the provincial savings plan requirements. “CUPE and CUPE locals are on record as supporting full funding from the provincial government for CUPE wage increases,” she said. “Our commitment to full funding is not in question. However, our priority is a collective agreement for Local 748 members that includes the provincial framework agreement. We will not waver from that.” The tentative provincial framework agreement included an end rate 3.5 per cent wage increase over two years. The agreement provides a one per cent increase retroactive to July 1, two per cent on Feb. 1, 2014, and 0.5 per cent on May 1, 2014. Once settlements are achieved, they will be voted on by the memberships of the respective CUPE locals. There are 57 CUPE across B.C., representing 27,000 educational support workers. The deadline for ratification of all local agreements is Dec. 20.

Clean up, dog owners To the Editor: What is with people who let their dogs do their business wherever and not clean it up? The other day, there was dog poo all over the sidewalk in front of the Royal Bank, again. Is Creston going to have to make a bylaw like Nelson and not allow dogs on Canyon Street? Please, people! I know it’s no fun carrying around a little bag of dog do — I have two dogs myself — but the baggies aren't expensive (the dollar store has them in a four-roll pack) or use a spare shopping bag. And there are trash cans every few meters. Stop giving pet owners a bad name. Casey Luscher Creston
something for clean air, and plans action to improve air quality nationwide, but he doesn’t know what, he states. Planning action now? A little late, but maybe late is better than never when climate change is already melting glaciers, creating extreme weather condition, wiping out species and resulting in the suffering of millions of humans. We have known for many years that the climate change created by humans and exacerbated by the inaction of the Harper government and others is the greatest threat facing us. But at least Mr. Wilks is honest and confirms how far he and his government are behind the times and that the inaction of Stephen Harper and his government has been a major contributor to global environmental destruction and extreme climate change. We also know that Mr. Harper has muzzled government research scientists that were getting in his way and don’t agree with his ideology. Exploitation and destruction of nature on an industrial scale is a recent phenomenon; humans can change what humans create. Henry Dahle Creston
Government must deal with climate Brewery should have lowered flag To the Editor: (Re: “MP says Parliament session will be productive,” Oct. 24 Advance) Our member of Parliament, David Wilks, is predicting a very productive parliament session. What will they do about the scandal-ridden Senate, election fraud, First Nations people living in third world condition, a debt that is approaching $700 billion and the most urgent threat facing humanity and our future, the climate crisis. None of those items were addressed in the throne speech. Oh yes, Mr. Wilks told the Advance the government will do
To the Editor: Why would the tallest building in the Creston Valley not recognize the Nov. 11 Remembrance Day services by having one member of the workforce ascend to the rooftop and lower the Canadian flag to half-mast for the entire day? Yes, everyone, you guessed right: The Columbia Brewery did
not get the Canadian flag lowered to half-mast on Nov. 11 in recognition of all the fallen men and women who gave up their lives, and also for the many surviving men and women who reside in the Creston Valley, who ultimately won our freedom in Canada. Creston has a great remembrance service for the many veterans past and present, and for the residents. Blake Eaglestone Creston
Pet killed in hit and run
To the Editor: On Oct. 29, a loyal family member was hit by a vehicle on our own driveway. I understand accidents happen, but that isn’t my issue. What is is that our family member was left there to die. She didn’t, at least not right away. Her vocalizing her distress was noted and we went looking. We had to let her go only hours later. Eighteen years of loyal companionship for me and my children was left there like a piece of garbage. It’s one thing to have them go in their sleep, it’s another when they have to suffer like that. We have enough information to know who and how and roughly when. The why part was either they didn’t know or didn’t care. I’m a professional driver by trade, and “not knowing” doesn’t wash. Driving is a privilege, not a right, and what we do behind the wheel are life and death decisions. If more people gave the proper attention to driving that the pros do, there would be benefits all round. I shouldn’t have to spell out what those are. Carol Scott Creston

Cats winning streak reaches six BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
Victories over the Golden Rockets, Revelstoke Grizzlies and Sicamous Eagles allowed the Creston Valley Thunder Cats to extend their winning streak to six, and pushing them farther into first place in their Kootenay International Junior Hockey League Division. They visited the Golden Rockets — at the bottom of the Eddie Mountain Division with 14 points, 20 behind the Thunder Cats — at the beginning of a three-game road trip on Nov. 21, coming away with a 2-1 win. “We went in and sort of did the minimum we had to do to get the two points and carry on,” said head coach Josh Hepdtich, who gave goalie Brock Lefevbre credit for making some key saves. “It was probably the most boring game all year.” Neither team scored in the first period, but Colby Livingstone and Jesse Collins (power play) scored for the Thunder Cats in the second period. The Rockets scored the only goal of the third period at 18:24. On Friday, the Thunder Cats visited Revelstoke, where they made the score 6-2 by the end of the first period. “We definitely came out with lots of
jump,” said Hepditch. “It was one of those games where we just exploded right out of the gate and really didn’t let off.” Tyler Podgorenko scored the Thunder Cats first goal at 19:04, followed by a shorthanded Grizzlies goal at 15:59. Trevor Hanna scored on a power play before the second and final Grizzlies goal was scored on a power play at 11:02. Logan Styler, Nichols Thompson, Connor Kidd and Brandon Formosa (power play) each added a goal by the end of the period. The Thunder Cats continued to dominate in the second period, with Hanna and Marshall Sidwell scoring at 15:08 and 14:31, respectively, and Hanna scoring on a power play for a hat trick with one second remaining. Colton St. John and Marcel Fuchs added the Thunder Cats’ 10th and 11th goals in the third period. “They (Revelstoke) have a pretty decent team, but it showed our firepower,” said Hepditch. “We could easily roll four lines and tell everybody was contributing to it.” The Thunder Cats visited Sicamous on Saturday, where a game that, on paper, looked similar to Thursday’s — two Thunder Cats goals in the second, one from the opponent in the third — was much different.
“It was a pretty tightly played game,” said Hepditch. “We had to rely on our defensive game. We couldn’t find the back of the net.” Collins and Styler scored in mid-second period, but in the third, the Thunder Cats ran into penalty trouble, allowing the Eagles to score a single goal. It was a much narrower margin than the Thunder Cats’ typical high-scoring games this season, which was a good test. “It’s a good confidence builder to know you can lock down those tight games,” said Hepditch. After five straight road games, the Thunder Cats will be home this weekend to host the Kimberley Dynamiters on Friday and Golden Rockets on Saturday. The Thunder Cats beat the Dynamiters 5-2 in each of three games this month. “We’re definitely looking forward to anther big game with them,” he said. “It will be interesting. There’s usually not much room for improvement in two weeks.” Saturday will mark Golden’s first visit this season, after the Thunder Cats managed two wins out of three games in Golden. “It will be nice to be able to get them on our ice and see how they react to the long drive,” said Hepditch.

Wildlife, landscape photos showing at Tivoli WILDSIGHT
Enjoy an evening of beautiful locally-made images on the big screen at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 2 when the Creston Valley branch of Wildsight features seven photographers for its third annual Local Colours at the Tivoli. Monte Comeau (www.comeau photo.ca) has photographed over 60 different birds from a kayak on Erie Lake, near Salmo. Once a commercial photographer with deadlines and schedules, he now works at his own pace on this small marshy haven for wild birds. Miriam Needoba (www. smaltownfilms.com) is a cinematographer and the director of an independent media company called Small Town Films in Nelson. She has taken her 13-minute short movie to a variety of film festivals throughout North America. Her subject features the West Kootenay photographer, Jim Lawrence. Jim Lawrence, (www.kootenay reflections.com) in person, is
becoming very well-known throughout the east and west Kootenays. He will be displaying his thoughtful wildlife photographs following Needoba’s movie short. Lawrence has also agreed to host the photography workshop at the May 9-11 Creston Valley Bird Fest. (Warning: this workshop is the first event to fill up.) Jim and Howard Smith (www. phototide.com) have a photography business in Creston. The love of the outdoors and backcountry travel in the mountains has led this pair into majestic territory at sunrise and sunset, armed only with cameras, lenses and a can of bear spray. Bernd Stengl and Ralph Moore have also travelled far into the backcountry. Their knowledge of our local mountains is astounding, as are their photographs of wild life and wild lands. With stunning imagery, these seven photographers hope to create a love and awareness of our spectacular and fragile mountain environment we call home. Admission is $10 at the door.

Don’t forget to remember
In my recent columns, I have presented the first four of the eight practices of awakening beings that Buddha taught on his deathbed: 1) have few desires, 2) know how much is enough, 3) enjoy serenity and 4) make diligent effort. I repeat these practices each week in order to help with the fifth practice of awakening, “Don’t forget to remember to be mindful.” In order be mindful of the practices of awakening, we have to memorize them. “Mindfulness” has been a catchword in medicine, psychology and even in golf. Everybody and their dog, regardless of their qualifications, are teaching what they call mindfulness. It is usually described in a vague sort of way as “being in the present moment.” Every health practitioner knows that mindfulness practices will lower blood pressure, help with overeating, assist with pain management, enhance recovery from addiction and even make you into a nicer person. These are good and reliable results of mindfulness training, but because of them mindfulness has become just another feel-better fad. But true mindfulness is about more than feeling better. Mindfulness is a deep spiritual practice that is rooted in ancient Buddhist teachings. The Buddha said,
“Monks, for living a fulfilling life and finding good help, there is nothing like remembering not to forget to be mindful. If you practice mindfulness, robbers of desire cannot enter you. Therefore, you
A
Zen's-Eye View Kuya Minogue
should always maintain mindfulness in yourself. When your mindfulness is solid, you will not be harmed even if you go into the midst of the robbers of the five sense desires. It is like wearing armour and going into a battlefield, so there is nothing to be afraid of. It is called ‘not to forget mindfulness.’ ” Buddha knew the human mind well. He knew that when faced with a strong desire for something that brings temporary pleasure but that harms us, we forget to remember that in the long term, going after these temporary pleasures will cause anguish. We get caught up in strong desire for salty/fatty foods or mood changing drugs, for example,
and lose mindfulness of the first two practices of awakening beings, “Have few desires,” and, “Know how much is enough.” Giving into those desires rob us of physical, mental and spiritual well-being. Mindfulness is much more than being in the present moment. With true mindfulness, we bring the spiritual practices of generosity, kindness, patience, calmness, wisdom and joyful effort into every one of our daily encounters. When we can do this, we fulfill the highest principle of Buddhist teachings, to work for the happiness of others. This is true mindfulness. Suggested practice: Insert a mindfulness prompt into your day by setting a timer at 40-minute intervals. When the timer goes off, pause and be mindful of one of the first five practices of great awakening. Remember to have few desires, to know how much is enough, to enjoy serenity and to make diligent effort to realize your highest spiritual values. Kuya Minogue is the resident teacher at the Creston Zen centre. She will be offering a beginners’ meditation class at 7-8:30 p.m. Jan 9, 16, 23 and 30. This course is by donation. For more information, contact her at 250-428-6500.
Many options for ground cover
I like to write standing up but realize I’m no Hemingway. I’m in the old office and while it’s sunny outside, there is still a chill in the air. Now that the frost has set in, I’ll have a chance to filter through all the catalogues and magazines that have piled into the nursery over the past nine months. I’d say that there is a file box full of them. Yesterday, I found a few unopened bits of mail (from March through June) but nothing marked Government of Canada. In any case, I now have some time to reflect on three years of startup and 10 years of full-time nursery, greenhouse and orchard business here in Erickson. One of the most consistent inquiries I have coming through the door over the years has been, “What is it that we can plant on a hot, dry bank so we don’t have to mow it?” Some folks had lawn grass but couldn’t look after it anymore, while others only ever had weeds and were looking to dress it up a little bit. This really is a little tougher scenario than a regular landscape planting. Often the soil is hard-baked clay and will need some amending. Compost, peat moss or any other organic matter added to the soil where you will be planting will help hold some extra moisture. Weed barrier, preferably with a felt backing for steep slopes, will help suppress the volunteers. One can use landscape pins to help hold the fabric in place while the plants get established and fill in. To plant through the fabric, simply cut an X and fold the fabric back wherever you need to work the prepared soil. Once your plants are in place, refold the fabric to get maximum weed suppression. Air and water still move through the fabric but weeds won’t germinate and grow through it. I would like to suggest native plants for these problematic areas. Almost all plants are native somewhere, but the ones that grow here in Southern B.C. are well adapted to the hot and dry summers. I like these plants so I’ll mention them first then move on to some more traditional ground covers.
Bearberry or kinnikinnick is a sturdy, drought-tolerant evergreen creeper growing to about six inches in height. It carries white to light pink flowers in spring which will turn to red berries by
Nursery Notes Evan Davies fall with some help from the bees. Mahonia repens or creeping mahonia will only grow eight to 12 inches in height. Mahonia aquifolium, or the regular Oregon grape, can grow two or three feet in height. Both make excellent drought-tolerant ground covers. They have glossy green leaves often confused with holly. New growth can be bronze-coloured. Yellow flower clusters give way to very attractive blue berries, which will remain on the plants through winter and could be made into very nice jelly. There are low-growing varieties of mock orange remaining under three feet in height. These plants have wonderfully fragrant white flowers reminiscent of orange blossoms and tolerate poor growing conditions. You will see regular mock orange in flower through early summer growing along the highway usually on a dry bank, to a height of about six feet. For a little brighter flower colour, Gold Star potentilla will grow to about 16 inches in height. This is a shorter selection of a native potentilla that will flower all summer long. Gro-Low fragrant sumac has small yellow blooms turning to red, hairy fruit in late summer. Spectacular orange-red fall colour is a bonus. It works well for mass plantings, slope and erosion control. It will grow to about seven feet wide and three feet tall on its own.
Various juniper cultivars also grow low and spread out quite nicely. Some of the lower-growing varieties are green or blue in colour, while the yellow or gold varieties tend to get a few feet taller and perhaps not quite as wide. Most horizontal varieties will fill out to about six feet wide in time. There are a couple of grasses and plants that will tolerate drought worth mentioning. They creep out into the landscape to fill it in. Blue bouma grass and Blue Dune lyme grass are two tough grasses with some foliage colour, and are good for erosion prevention. Other grasses will only grow in clumps but can tolerate drought conditions. More traditional ground covers like cotoneaster are worth mentioning. Bearberry cotoneaster looks a lot like the native bearberry. I like to bring in a variety with coral-coloured berries. These are some of the hardiest ground cover types and really thrive in heavy clay soils. I would like to suggest planting low-growing varieties of Japanese barberry for a punch of colour all growing season long. Further, I would suggest the ground cover types of roses, including the super hardy Pavement series — flowers without the fuss. Dwarf Norway spruce is an alternative evergreen ground cover to juniper for those of you with an aversion to them. Herbaceous perennials like creeping phlox, thyme, and snow in summer could also be incorporated into a bank for texture and colour. There are two types of cistus common enough and worth mentioning: yellow and purple broom, which are very drought tolerant, with flowers and fragrance. They really aren’t the weeds you think of that grow along the railroad tracks up the lake. In short, there are a number of ornamental plants that can be used to landscape those tough spots. Evan Davies owns Beltane Nursery at 2915 Highway 3 in Erickson.

Ants show us teamwork and co-operation
The “Kootenay Road and Bridge Company” has an excellent environmental track record. It can be said it is truly environmentally friendly. It, to my knowledge, has never committed an environment infraction. And, it doesn’t have much money and so, uniquely, also, has never been sued. You have probably observed its projects, but it seldom puts on much of a show, except for the close observer. While the company’s bridge projects are small, the road projects can be rather

I have never seen an ant company’s bridge. But I understand they can bridge a gap in their route by connecting end to end. By sheer strength, these small but mighty company workers extend themselves horizontally until the gap is spanned. Some ants give their lives in building a causeway. Again, they extend themselves over the water’s surface to provide a surface to enable the rest of the ants to crossover the water, while some on the bottom surely drown. The way this road and bridge building company works could be an example to us larger but weaker creatures in our business and personal practices and relationships: teamwork and co-operation in the absence of self-serving projects, bosses and even unions! Ants do it without any of the latter! Ed McMackin is a biologist by profession but a naturalist and hiker by nature. He can be reached at 250-866-5747.

Daniel gives us an insight into that event. “I watched as thrones were put in place and the Ancient One sat down to judge. His clothing UDGMENT IS ET was as white as snow, his hair like whitest wool.” (Daniel 7:9) By Pastor Ian Cotton The judgment is set, the thrones are put in place and God the Father sits down to judge. is judged. And Paul says that there is nothing hidden from God and we will be judged accordingly. Then Daniel saw “someone who looked like the son of man coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient One and was led into his presence. He was given authority, honor, and royal power over all the nations of the world, so that people of every race and nation and language might serve Him.” (Daniel 7:13, 14) Jesus is introduced as coming into God’s presence and at the end, “His dominion is an everlasting dominion which will not pass away; and his kingdom is one which will not be destroyed. … The Ancient One came and judged the holy people of the Most High. Then the time arrived for the holy people to take over the kingdom.” (Daniel 7: 14, 22) So, before Jesus returns, the judgment sits, everyone whoever lived is judged and a decision is made in heaven to see who will be taken to heaven when Jesus returns the second time. Community band hosting first Christmas concert CRESTON COMMUNITY BAND
The Creston Community Band, often the guest at local
functions to help with fundraising, is pleased to announce its first Christmas concert on Dec. 2 at the St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Church hall.
Sing along with guest vocalist Vern Gorham and enjoy the Creston Hand Chime Choir as it makes its concert debut. The concert format will be similar to
Brian Lawrence
The Creston Community Band at a recent Creston Valley Music Teachers Association concert.
Koenig and Snow playing SUBMITTED Creston Valley singer-songwriter and Juno Award nominee Mark Koenig will be joined by Gary Snow at the Snoring Sasquatch on Nov. 29. Koenig got his start in the 1970s playing guitar and singing harmonies with Ann Murray. He also had the privilege of sitting beside renowned guitarist Lenny Breau for three years, who is quoted by Chet Atkins as “being the best guitarist on the planet.” Koenig is a B.C. singer-songwriter whose dynamic live performances have received acco-
lades from critics and won him fans of all ages and walks of life. He has been performing professionally for more than 30 years and is as comfortable playing Calgary’s Saddledome in front of audiences of thousands as he is playing festivals, concert halls, auditoriums, coffee houses, and private performances. Snow was born in Kansas City, Mo., and has been playing bass since 1967 when he did his first gig for money, a whopping $1.25, and has been touring and doing recording sessions ever since. He has played with many great musicians including tour-
ing with Michael Martin Murphy and fiddle legend Vassar Clements. Although he has played and recorded with mostly American musicians, Snow worked several years with Canadian singer-songwriter Cameron Molloy and played on Cameron’s song, Diamonds in the Dark, which went to No. 2 on the Canadian music charts. Tickets are $12 in advance, available at Kingfisher Used Books, Buffalo trails Coffee House and Black Bear Books, and $15 at the door, which opens at 6 p.m.; the show starts at 7.
Snoring Sasquatch hosting pre- and post-parade concerts SUBMITTED
Peter Bodley, Carl Erickson and more will play at the Snoring Sasquatch before and after the Santa Claus Parade on Dec. 7. Bodley will perform from 5-5:30 p.m. for young children before the parade, in a free event sponsored by the early childhood development team and Success by Six. Born in Capetown, South Africa, Bodley grew up in Montreal, where he began folk guitar lessons at the age of 10. His peers instructed him in classical and rock technique; however, he is primarily a selftaught musician. His independent study of the guitar combined with music theory courses has allowed him to acquire necessary improvisation and composing skills. He was exposed to classical guitar through rock and roll artists such as Steve Howe, Alex Lifeson and Rik Emmett. This led him to
explore the Spanish guitar. He listened to the repertoire of astounding guitar players like John Williams and Liona Boyd, and most recently became familiar with Pavlo, Jesse Cook, Oscar Lopez and Robert Michaels. Although Bodley’s live performances and playlist are often spontaneous, he will be playing a mix of his CD, Classics for Kids, along with compositions from his previous CDs, which cover classical, folk and flamenco styling. It will be an entirely acoustic evening and 90 per cent instrumental. He will also be joined by special guests Warren Bruns on vocals and guitar, and Neil Ripski on percussion. At 7 p.m., after the parade, doors open (admission by donation) for Carl Erickson (saxophone, guitar, vocals), who will offer a Christmas program, joined by Donnie Clark (trumpet), Gary Snow (bass, vocals), Ted Bryant (guitar, vocals) and Adam
Koenig (percussion), as well as special guest vocalist Traci Stonehouse. Stonehouse started singing when she was very young., learning at home with her mother, who sang and taught music through Royal Conservatory of Music, where she studied for five years. Growing up, Stonehouse preformed in multiple choirs and plays, and is currently singing with her “church team”, which she has done for the last 15 years. “Music runs in my family and I have a passion for it,” she said. “Traci is a very lovely gal with a great voice,” said Erickson. “She will be with us on Dec. 7 singing great tunes like The Christmas Song, better known as Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire, and Silver Bells in a light shuffle kind of way. “Traci is a wonderful singer with a dazzling smile and a winning way. .... Come out and meet her and have a listen.”
the coffee house concerts in which the band has performed with other groups. St Stephen’s Presbyterian Church will operate the concession, with tables set about for a relaxed intimate atmosphere. Concession proceeds will go to the Philippines relief fund. The present Creston Community Band was formed in 1989 by a small group of dedicated musicians who saw a real need to provide appropriate music at various town functions. Band members come from all parts of the community, and even as far away as Cranbrook. The band even has a bit of international flair with one member making the journey from Bonners Ferry, Idaho. Under the direction of Monte Anderson, the Creston Community Band has a large repertoire that includes up-beat swing, jazz, Dixie, film and television tunes, Broadway hits, classical, traditional and dance tunes. It plays something for all
musical types and tastes. The band is always looking for new members. Some present members had not played an instrument for 30-plus years and were amazed at how quickly it all came back. So, if you are a recent player or have not played since school (however long ago that was), from piccolo to tuba, come talk to members and they will help you get back into the “swing” of things. The band has recently moved to St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Church hall where it can store its music library, drums, stands and other equipment. The move allows the band to practice (Monday evenings at 7 p.m.) and perform in the same location, while continuing to support local functions. For more information, visit www.crestonbc.com/ccb. Admission is $5. The doors open at 7 p.m., and the concert begins at 7:30.

Welcome to the driver’s seat
Driveway goes Hollywood!
Zack Spencer reveals what turned his head week with a visit to the glitzy 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show, Alexandra Straub looks at what’s cool, Bob McHugh goes green and Keith Morgan sneaks a peek at a racy compact concept. Check out the full script at drivewayBC.ca
LA-LA Land auto extravaganza LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Auto Show is full of eye-popping sights and some even include cars! It’s not difficult to have your head turned but it is a challenge to pick one’s top picks but I’m for the challenge. Nissan GT-R Nismo Nissan stole the show with not only one of the fastest cars in the world but the fastest man in the world. Olympic gold medalist and world record holder Usain Bolt was on hand as Nissan’s Director of Excitement. Usain was clearly taken with the new GT-R Nismo, there were also promises to get him one to replace his gold coloured GT-R. Power has been pumped up to 600hp taking this new Nismo version to 100 km/h in just two seconds. Look for the new GT-R in the spring of 2014. I suspect Usain will get his a bit earlier. Chevrolet Colorado The mid-size pickup truck market has been all but abandoned by the domestic automakers over the last few years leaving this category entirely to Toyota and Nissan with the Tacoma and Frontier trucks. Wait until next year and the choice will include the all-new Colorado from Chevrolet. Building off the success of the all-new full-size Silverado, the engineers have taken the same approach to this new truck. On the economy front, eventually there will be three engines to choose from. Out of gate, there is the base 2.5L 4-cylinder engine or a 3.6L V6. Subaru WRX Fans of the Subaru WRX will be very excited about the arrival of an all-new car but maybe a bit disappointed that this production model
doesn’t look very much little the sleek and sexy concept that was unveiled earlier this year. It should prove to be a capable car thanks to an all-new direct injection 2.0L 4-cylinder putting out 268hp and matched to the first 6-speed in the WRX. Subaru Legacy Concept A head Zack Spencer turning design that my sources tell me looks a lot like the production car. The metallic, almost chrome looking paint, certainly helps to make the car pop but the bold front grille and macho stance could very well be included in the final version. Lincoln MKC Lincoln has a long and distinguished history as an American premium brand but over the last few decades, it has been an extension of existing Ford products using different badging and trim. There is now a long-term plan to resurrect the Lincoln brand with all-new vehicle that use some Ford components but are developed separately from the main Ford line of products. The compact crossover MKC shares a platform with the Ford Escape but has been designed and engineered to be a very different car. The design, other than the trademark Lincoln grille is very European and the back wrap-around hatch is maybe Audi-inspired. Standard in Canada will be all-wheel-drive and adaptive suspension, matched to a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Drives-U-Crazy Disobeying a green light Green means go, right? Drives me crazy when people roar off into a busy intersection, stranding innocent left turners. It seems these impatient folks don’t know that a green light entitles
you to proceed but you must not impede those who have entered the intersection legally on a green from finishing their left turn What drives-u-crazy. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca
BMW 4 Series Cabriolet BMW has changed its naming: the 3 Series is now the sedan only while the coupe and convertible version are now called 4 Series. The all-new cabriolet is wider and features a new three-piece retractable hardtop and for the first time X-Drive AWD is now available on the convertible models. Interior refinements include a new neck warmer to that blows a steady stream of warm air on the front passengers neck and shoulders, helping to elongate the convertible season. Porsche Macan This small SUV is based on the same platform as the Audi Q5. This lower, sleeker and much more aggressive Macan will attract a lot of attention based purely on looks. Porsche made it very clear that this is not juts a Porsche in name but also in performance. Look for the Macan coming next year. Jaguar F-Type Jaguar made a big splash with the Jaguar F-Type convertible this year and next year we look forward to the coupe version, a dynamite looking coupe with a stunning silhouette and improved dynamics thanks to a stiffer body. The body of the car is built with extensive use of aluminum to produce the stiffest Jaguar ever made. This is one heart-pounding coupe I cannot wait to try.

Art includes painting, jewelry COMMUNITY ARTS COUNCIL OF CRESTON
For the final art displays of the year, Art in the Library and Art in the Chamber each offer a group exhibit to delight your senses and stir your imagination. Art in the Chamber features A Gift of Art, a group of 10 artists displaying a variety of artwork. Here is what the artists say about themselves: Carolyn Stone: A self-taught watercolourist, focusing on colour and dimension. Darlene McDowell: A watercolour artist, inspired by the uniqueness of the world around us. Linda Ellefson: A neophyte in the watercolour world. Guy Hobbs: A self-taught wildlife artist working in a combination of acrylic and colour pencil to capture realistic portraits of nature. Carol Huscroft: A second-generation artist focused on wildlife and nature, painting mainly in acrylic and oils. Audrey Orosz: A watercolour artist who enjoys painting scenes from the prairies and from Mexico. Karl (Carlos) Chihonik: Employs oil paint as he attempts to record light and shadow to bring a pleasing presentation. Jenny Steenkamp: “My paintings are all about colour. When I paint, it takes me away on wonderful journeys of beauty and colour.” Marion Evans: Art was a joyful discovery and has become a wonderful adventure. Emmie Roelofse: Primarily a fabric painter using bright, bold colors and humor to lighten hearts and minds. Also on display at the chamber of commerce is the beautiful and insightful jewelry and glass art by Cherie Rensing of Celtic Fire Design. The jewelry can be found in the glass cabinets. The exhibit at the chamber can be seen during business hours through Dec. 20. Come and enjoy our gift to you, and maybe get a gift for someone on your Christmas list. The Art in the Library display is an eclectic array of art by members of the Creston Art Club. Art by familiar names like Richard Mitton and Laura Leeder will be joined for this exhibit by the art of new club members Ken Alexander, Georgia Nielsen and Colin Jobi.
Not all of the 40-or-so members of the art club will have art on display, but visitors to the library will find a wealth of color and enjoyment on the walls through Dec. 28. Remember, you can contact the artists if you see something you would like to own. The Creston Art club meets every Wednesday at St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Church to paint and share camaraderie and is always happy to welcome new members. Artists wishing to be able to exhibit in these venues next year can contact Val at 250-866-5772.

A1 Poop Scooper takes cares of your dog’s business

A1 Poop Scooper owner Lana Horan at work in a Creston yard.
leaning up after your dog can be a dirty job, but someone has to do it. And if you’d prefer that someone isn’t you, Lana Horan is more than happy to take on the job. “I’d rather pick up poop than wash dishes,” said the owner of A1 Poop Scooper. That’s a good thing for her customers, who range from those who can’t stand the smell to those who simply don’t have the time to do a thorough inspection of their yards during Story and daylight hours. photo by She has the job down to a science, Brian Lawrence and knows the best circumstances to work in: long grass and leaves make scooping difficult, big dogs are easier to pick up after and winter is the best time to scoop, especially when the temperature is between –9 and –19. “It’s sitting right there and it’s frozen,” she said. Originally from Quebec, Horan moved to Alberta in 1977. She started A1 Poop Scooper in Calgary in January 1994, after she heard that young people in Vancouver were doing pet waste removal to make some extra cash. It was the only business of its type in the city, which necessitated a new listing in the yellow pages. Her first client came through a friend who cleaned houses, and a second came after she put magnets with her logo and business name on her car — while Horan was paying inside a gas station, a woman who had three dogs ran in and said, “I need you.”
Horan made sure her business was easily recognizable, and soon had a small fleet of Dalmatian-spotted cars decorated with horns that sounded like dogs barking. “The kids get to know you’re coming,” she said. By the time she sold the business to move to the Creston Valley, she had nearly 600 customers, and had branched out into cleaning cat litter boxes for pregnant women. After seven years of living in the Creston Valley, she got A1 Poop Scooper back up and running earlier this year. With most clients, she often gets to know the “hot spots” fairly quickly. At one home, she consistently scoops right in front of the house, and at a few random spots around the yard. With another, she may just have to look off in a far corner. Horan’s job gets her up close and personal with part of a dog’s life that most people are happy to ignore, so she can often tell how healthy a pet is, or even if they’re eating well. “I can always tell when they’re eating cheap food,” she said. “It just passes right through them.” To know that much, she has to be a dog lover, a feeling that seems to be mutual. “They come out and follow me around,” Horan said. “That’s the most fun part.” And if there’s a day when she doesn’t have a client, Horan is still keeping her scooping skills in use. “I have eleven of them, so I have a lot of poop to scoop,” she said. “I’m never out of practice.”

Help us make sure there’s A Book Under Every Tree
The Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy & the Creston and District Public Library are collecting new or very gently used books for the book under every tree collection. Our goal is to have a book for every child and adult in the families that receive a Christmas hamper from the Ministerial Association. Last year we collected an amazing 730 plus books thanks to your generous donations!
Please pick up a book for a child or an adult when you are out doing your Christmas shopping and drop it in one of the collection boxes at local stores and schools or at the Creston Valley Advance office.

SNOW DAY — What do you do after the first snowfall of the year? Get out and play in it, of course, just like these Canyon-Lister Elementary School students did on Nov. 6. David Falconer
Chasing a Costa Rican chicken BY REEDE HAWTON Grade 12
I step off the bus, alongside my teammates to eagerly watch the final game of soccer to be played during our Costa Rican vacation. The sweltering heat hits me immediately as I take in my surroundings. I recall the previous games we played, the first in a large city and the second at a luxury hotel, and notice how vastly different this area is. The remarkably small homes have boarded up windows and tin roofs and everything is coated in a thin layer of dust from the dirt roads — everything including impossibly thin dogs and copious amounts of chickens. Amid this impoverished area, I see the pristine soccer field surrounded by spectators and realize that in this community soccer is a priority. I sit with the rest of my teammates while the boys warm up. Some of the girls are playing with the puppies and local children who came to watch but I am determined to watch the warm up and game to the fullest. As I sit trying to concentrate, I’m distracted by the dynamics of the local fowl, among the plethora of hens I observe a glorious rooster. The hens for the most part bask in his glory as he trots pointedly in circles where two fences meet in the corner. However, some of the braver birds seem curious about all of the sudden interest in their neighbourhood and wander over to the people. I make eye contact with one of the smaller chickens, a svelte black chicken with a need for speed. The intensity of the gaze overtakes me and before I’m even aware of what is happening, I’m on my feet dashing towards this chicken. I’m pursuing this chicken with such intent I completely miss kickoff and don’t notice the game is in motion until the chicken leads me behind the net. We reach the edge of the field when the chicken does a stealthy turnabout and slides right past me. I’m running faster than I ever have in my entire life, inches away from grasping my treasure, when it dives under a fence. I have so much momentum that stopping isn’t an option so I lunge at the fence, falling face first in a cloud of dust, missing the chicken by seconds. I’m forced to make the embarrassing walk over to my teammates dirty and empty handed. Most of them laugh at me but I see a few faces, even local spectators, that seem just as disappointed as me, and in that moment I know I must catch a Costa Rican chicken.
Unfortunately, after my display, all of the chickens have gathered around the head honcho again and trying to grab one now is far too risky. Close to 20 minutes have passed since my heartbreak and I’m starting to feel impatient, I know that you have to risk it to get the biscuit and I know that I need to infiltrate the poultry posse if I want to catch a chicken. I put my hair in a ponytail roll up my sleeves and wander over to the corner where the chickens have clustered. I see one of them on the fringes; this one is brown and white with a bright pink face that is pecking at the ground innocently. I decide to make this one my target. The chase is wild, and the bird has me weave through parked cars and fans that have shifted their attention away from the game and directed it to me. Once more, as I’m caught up in the chase I’m headed towards
another fence, but this fence is guarded by the rooster. I pivot on my heels and try to retreat but fall on my back as the glorious bird flaps its wings and rises above my head. Terrified, I get back on my feet and back away. I’ve caused quite an upset and dozens of chickens are running around excitedly, but I can still see my spotted chicken. She is running toward the field looking slightly dazed, and I gear myself up for my third run of the day. In eight swift strides, she is within my reach. She tries to flap her wings but the few inches she has gained have put her closer to my hands. I close my eyes, extend my arms and clasp my hands around my prize. I feel downy feathers between my fingers and hold my trophy up with pride; to my surprise, my celebration is met with excited cheers from everyone within the block. I did it. I caught the chicken.
A Warm Thank You To all the volunteers and donors who helped make this year’s Christmas Craft Fair such a success, and to all who attended. A very special thank you to Frank Goodsir and the rest of the front desk elves!
