Tyee Plaza up for sale

Victoria ownership group under creditor protection Paul Rudan Campbell RiveR miRRoR

The Tyee Plaza is expected to be on the sales block next month. The downtown Campbell River plaza is owned by the Victoria-based League Assets Corp., but the large real estate investment trust is now under creditor protection. PricewaterhouseCoopers is overseeing

League’s restructuring and have been ordered by the BC Supreme Court to sell 18 properties, including Campbell River’s Tyee Plaza, starting Dec. 18. League still has until month’s end to exempt Tyee Plaza from the sales proceeding, but that seems unlikely given its debts and financial obligations to investors. Campbell River realtor Dan Samson was

part of the ownership group that sold the Tyee Plaza to League several years ago. He said things started off well, but in the last couple years maintenance has been slipping and there are too many

vacancies. That said, he added it’s a good sign when the first assets are listed for sale because they’re usually the most desirable. “I’ve been following this with interest,” he said

Wednesday. “The Tyee Plaza is a very good asset and I think a change in ownership would be good. They would probably pay more attention to it…I see this as a positive for Campbell River.”

Dry fall isn’t good for the watershed Water levels are dropping at alarming rate on the Campbell River watershed resulting in reduced power generation and river outflows. On Tuesday, BC Hydro reduced discharge from the John Hart Generating Station into the Campbell River from 82 cubic metres per second (m3/s) to 67 m3/s. The purpose is to manage lake levels, not only for power generation through the winter, but for fish and other aquatic

species. “With the bulk of spawning now complete, we are now focusing on conserving water for the (salmon) incubation period through the winter,” said Hydro spokesman Stephen Watson in a news release. Hydro’s monitoring of low-flow conditions in January and February of this year showed that key salmon spawning areas are watered at 67 m3/s. The long-term concern, added Watson, is

the potential for winterdrought like conditions that have taken place at Vancouver Island hydroelectric systems a number of times since 2009. From mid-December through to spring, like it did in 2013, the cool and dry conditions made it challenging for BC Hydro to meet downstream environmental flows for fish. “To have upstream reservoirs this low at this time of year is disconcerting,” he said. “How-

ever, one large storm system could quickly change the water abundance conditions, though there is nothing on the horizon and BC Hydro needs to take action.” Environment Canada is calling for rain this weekend, but dry, sunny conditions are expected following that for the next two weeks. John Hart Generating Station is now running at about 55 per cent of capacity at a time of the year when it is typically

running at full capacity. The river flow is now about half of BC Hydro’s licensed amount of 124 m3/s when at maximum power generation. The Upper Campbell Reservoir/Buttle Lake is at 216.5 metres and dropping. It is about 1.6 metres below normal for this time of year. Hydro has been releasing about 82 m3/s through November, but the upstream inflows into the reservoirs have only been about 30 m3/s.

Quinsam Mine expansion raises concerns Island MLA Claire Trevena. A copy of the Quinsam amendment application is available for public viewing at city hall (contact Terri Martin). A copy should also be filed at the public library downtown. The public has until Dec. 13 to make comment to the Chief Inspector of Mines.

Paul Rudan Campbell RiveR miRRoR

Campbell River Environmental Committee has several questions about a proposed expansion to the Quinsam Coal mine. “I think there’s reason for a lot of concern,” said committee president Leona Adams. “It’s our mandate to get the information out to the public (but) it’s so technical, you wonder how people will react?” Adams spent several days last week pouring through more than 500 pages of a Mines Act permit application to allow Quinsam to begin expanding its underground mining in the area known as “7 South Area 5.” “It’s a small addition to 7 South,” said Gary Gould, vice-president of Hillsborough Resources which owns the coal mine, “and we’re looking at getting an amendment to our mining permit.” If it goes through, the new area is expected to produce about 870,000 tonnes of coal; approximately 1.2 tonnes of coal would fill a cubic metre. The mine is located about 20 kilometres west of the city, just off Highway 28, and is surrounded by steams and lakes which make up the Campbell River watershed. The watershed is a primary focus of the environmental committee. Adams said an ongoing concern is groundwater seepage from flooded mine shafts which can transfer heavy metals, such as arsenic, into the nearby creeks and rivers. On a map, Adams points to the Iron River and the nearby “242 test mine” which was flooded long ago. Adams believes there’s a hydraulic connection between the mine and the river, and

Fast Facts n Quinsam began as an open pit mine in 1986. It switched to underground mining in 1993 with open-pit mining ceasing in 1994. n The current mining method uses remote controlled continuous mining machines. The continuous miners cut

and load coal into shuttle cars, which haul and empty it onto a belt conveyor leading to a coal stockpile on the surface. From there, coal is transported to the coal preparation plant. A loader feeds coal into a preparation plant where it is crushed, sized, sorted and cleaned through a series of processes.

Quinsam Coal wants to expand its underground mining operation, but the Campbell River Environmental Committee wants some answers first.

bases the theory on water quality results. According to Adams, water taken upstream of the mine shows low levels of arsenic, other metals and alkalinity. But those numbers rise downstream which may be a naturally-occurring process or something else. “What’s in the Iron River right now isn’t great and it’s only going to get worse,” she predicted. “That’s not background (contamination). I believe it’s from the early exploration of that test mine.” The environmental committee has asked Quinsam several questions to clarify its plans and is still awaiting a response. The committee has also sent a letter to the B.C. environmental protection office. Adams said they want an opportunity to comment on Quinsam’s other application to amend its effluent discharge permit. The committee believes the mine already

exceeds its permit in some areas which show higher levels of arsenic and iron in test wells. “The effluent discharge permit is not minor,” she wrote in the letter. “(We) request the application to amend the effluent

discharge permit…be distributed to the public for comment.” Adams is also calling on the public to learn more and to voice their concerns to the Environment and Mining ministries, as well as to North

Tis the season for road checks as CounterAttack begins The province-wide drinking-drinking CounterAttack campaign kicked off Wednesday. It comes a day after a head-on collision south of Campbell River that claimed the life of a 59-year-old local man. The second driver, a 28-year-old Campbell River man, is currently in hospital and is being investigated for drinking

and driving. According to ICBC statistics, an average of five people are killed in B.C. every December in crashes involving impaired driving. And on Vancouver Island, an average of 930 people are injured in 3,500 crashes during December. “We’ve come a long way since 1976, the year before CounterAttack

people were killed in impaired related crashes each year in our province,” said Attorney General Suzanne Anton. “Despite the progress, the numbers are far too high, which is why we’re committed to reducing crashes involving alcohol and drugs and will continue to support enhanced enforcement.” Drivers can expect to

see road checks throughout the holiday season. “The reality is that approximately one-third of all car crash fatalities in B.C. are related to impaired driving,” said Todd Stone, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “These are preventable tragedies. Our View

Tough decisions needed by BC Ferries No changes to how B.C. Ferries delivers its services will ever meet with total approval. Critics of the proposal to charge seniors half-price passenger rates during the week instead of giving them free passage see We say: Stop the decision as gouging a vulnerable looking for more segment of society. But half price is still a generous discount. ways to gouge The perk of free mid-week passage for seniors may have made moral ferry riders sense, if not business sense, when the corporation was in a better financial position, but not now. B.C. Ferries’ proposal to cut little-used early morning

and late-night runs on smaller routes makes sense, as does maintaining service at busier commuter times. Some argue that any cut to service is a blow to the original B.C. Ferries concept of extending the coastal highway system to the growing number of people living on smaller islands. But those residents, many of whom commute to work on Vancouver Island or the mainland, have chosen that lifestyle and it comes with costs. Forcing the majority to pay through ever-higher fares to service the minority doesn’t make sense. The idea of putting slot machines on ferries working the Swartz Bay-Tsawwassen run is an insult to passengers maxed out with the number of extra-cost services available on the ships. While revenue from these runs has

subsidized the smaller runs for years, enough is enough. It’s time to stop looking for more ways to gouge the already cash-strapped ridership. With the balance sheets bleeding red, B.C. Ferries must make some hard choices. Complicating that scenario is the fact the corporation is quasi-private and serves two masters, the public and government, which is the public in business suits. As such, the need to find workable compromises is heightened. In the end, the main objective is stabilization of fares for all ferry riders. If that takes cutting some low-usage sailings and asking seniors to pay a little more, we’re all for it. – Black Press

Campbellton neglected I live in North Campbell River and I have a couple of questions. Is Campbellton not part of Campbell River, and do the people of Campbellton not pay their taxes to the City of Campbell River? When the Campbellton Neighborhood Association asked City Council for a measly $3,000, they were denied. Instead they were granted $1260; enough to pay their rent. The potholes in the main highway through Campbellton are repaired by dumping gravel in the holes and posting a sign to warn traffic of loose gravel. I can’t help wondering how much the final bill will be when St. Anne’s Road is finally complete after all the work done and then torn up and done again properly. Now I see they are tearing up the stupid Island in front of Chances again, to put in a crosswalk. Why didn’t they just close the road to all traffic and make it pedestrian only? Willow Point got their share and now the City is getting all the attention. When will Campbellton see some of their tax dollars spent in their area?? My moustache caught more food than attention

Paul Rudan No, really

The caterpillar living on my upper lip is gone. I know, there are still a few days left in Movember, but when the chance came to lose it and donate a few bucks to cancer research, well, I could hardly pass up the win-win situation. It wasn’t much of a moustache, light brown with a few red and grey hairs poking out at odd angles, it caught more food and raindrops than it did attention. But hey, it’s not about me, it was about raising awareness and support to combat prostate and testicular cancer as well as mental health challenges, according to movember.com I never grew the ’stache before during Movember, but having gone through my own medical challenges, I thought it was

time to support a men’s health cause. Well, that was part of the reason. The other was the first Mirror issue of November. If you’ve noticed, throughout this month the entire staff “have sported” moustaches on the photos on our oped page. It’s a fun way to support the cause, but heck, if they’re going to draw a moustache on me, why not just grow one? So I tried. It came in slowly and I think my Dad would be entirely disappointed or thoroughly amused. I can picture that smirk behind the thick black and grey mustache that’s defined his look for more than 40 years. Oh well, I didn’t get the “good’ stache gene” but I do have a full head of thinning hair!

Anyhow, last night, I stopped by Moxies for “A Mo For a Bro 4” and had the gals from A Cut Above shave off the lip brow for a donation. Good time and good job for all the guys who got a little hairier this month. vvv One of the hottest tickets in the city is for the annual wine fest at North Island College. It usually goes in the spring – a better time for the student volunteers – but this year’s event took place last Friday and was another sold-out hit. There were loads of very good wines. I stuck with the big reds this time and was surprised how good some of the B.C. Bordeaux-inspired wines are. Better still were the exceptional appies

and service courtesy the students from the Culinary Arts and Tourism and Hospitality programs! vvv Former Mayor Roger McDonell, now VP of Stubbs Island Whale Watching, replied to last week’s column about the temperature in Campbell River. Low and behold, there is a weather station downtown, but it has nothing to do with Environment Canada. As a boater, McDonell was also unhappy with local weather reports so he bought and installed a weather station at the Maritime Heritage Centre. The information is available to all online (weatherlink.com/user/mhc/) or through an iPhone app. Thanks Captain Roger.

City council is looking at adding seven new items to its budget for 2014. Councillors submitted the service level change requests to city staff to be considered by council in January during budget deliberations. The requests would increase the city’s base operating budgets and are a mix of on-going and one-time funding. Myriah Foor t, f inancial accounting supervisor for the city, said the service level requests submitted by council are not guaranteed to become a part of

the 2014 budget but are items of importance to council. “(They) will be sent to management for additional analysis and detailed costing and then be deliberated along with management’s service level change requests at the January 27 and 28 budget deliberations,” said Foort in a report to council. The new items council has submitted for consideration are: n $5,000 each year to the Ishikari Twinning Society to properly fund a 40th anniversary celebration of the sister city relationship which is 10 years away. n Biweekly yard waste pick up from March 1-November 30.

Funding from MMBC could be used. n $25,000 a year for sidewalk and parking lot maintenance n $50,000 a year for a program that maintains and cleans the city’s open ditches n Install a boardwalk from the Quadra ferry terminal to Roberts Reach to provide a key link between Robert Ostler Park to Discovery Harbour and the Tyee Plaza area. n $440,000 for Petersen and Willis road upgrades which include pedestrian and bikeway infrastructure improvements. n Adding an additional bylaw officer position.

Quality Foods, Mirror team up to help the needy

Quality Foods and the Campbell River Mirror are teaming up today to bring bags of holiday cheer to those in need. Included in today’s edition of the newspaper will be Quality Foods grocery bags. We hope as many Mirror readers as possible will fill the bags with non-perishable food. They can drop the bags off at the Quality Foods store in Merecroft Village, at the Mirror office on Dogwood or they can take them directly to the Campbell River Food Bank. This is the eighth year Quality Foods and the Mirror have teamed up to help the needy this. The grocery bag drive raises many thousands of dollars worth of food each year.

We would like to thank our many wonderful friends who have shown us so much love and support these past months. All the prayers and good wishes, messages of encouragement, calls and visits lifted our spirits, warmed our hearts and gave us strength. We had so many kind offers of help also. Everything from taking care of our house, mowing our lawns, special Tuesday night dinners, gift baskets, DVDs and music for Bob, and especially the home away from home in Victoria for Sharon...all provided by our special friends. You are the best! “A Night for Bob O”, the event arranged for us on November 9 at the Riptide was a very special night. We were both touched and overwhelmed by how many came to support us and by your generosity. A heartfelt Thank You goes out to all that donated items and services for the silent auction and to those who chose to bid and donate. The funds will certainly help with Bob’s therapies and rehab. The evening was made even more special just knowing that our friends donated so much of their time, talents and enery in organizing it for us... sometimes “Thank You” just doesn’t seem enough. We will be forever grateful and feel truly blessed to have friends who care so much.

Sincerely, Bob & Sharon Olsen.

Quadra’s emergency meeting area at risk in the event of an earthquake Kristen Douglas Campbell RiveR miRRoR

Quadra Island’s community centre, which is designated as the island’s emergency reception centre may not be safe in the event of an earthquake, according to a report released by the Strathcona Regional District. The community centre, which was built in 1985 with a new stage and a two-storey addition added in 2001, is considered to be at risk of unrepairable damage if a significant earthquake were to occur, according to a recent seismic evaluation of the centre. In the report, the community centre is given an H3 ranking – a high level on the priority ret-

rofit ranking scale. “H3 ranking is characterized as isolated failure of building, such as walls, is expected and the building is likely not repairable after a significant seismic level event,” states the report. The centre was given a high level ranking because of the rocking plywood shearwalls. The report said it’s assumed that there are no hold down anchors in the walls of the main hall to resist rocking. The other issue is the addition, which was not tied together with the original hall at the time of construction which means the seismic weight of the original hall would be transferred to the centre’s addition. Beth Rees, the regional

district’s community services manager, is recommending the regional district budget for a retrofit. “To not proceed with upgrades is not offered as an alternative due to the public natures of the building’s use, its significant value as a core element of the community’s social well-being, and the actual physical value of the infrastructure – $2.5 million insured value,” said Rees in a report to the board. The options are: a life safety retrofit for $267,630, an enhanced performance retrofit at a cost of $335,020, or the cheaper alternative of a phased retrofit for $24,067. The enhanced retrofit is supposed to ensure less post-earthquake damage than a building upgraded with the

Russ Hotsenpiller, chief administrative officer for the regional district, said in a report to the board that it would make sense to opt for the enhanced retrofit as there is extra security and the scope of work is not much more than with the life safety retrofit. “It is further recommended that the upgrades be completed in the near future,” Hotsenpiller said. “The timely implementation of a full retrofit will serve to reduce the level risk to facility users, the potential for damage to the facility in the event

Wanted: Christmas angels Kristen Douglas

CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Hundreds of Campbell River families are hoping this community’s generosity will help make their children’s Christmas a little bit brighter. The Downtown Busine ss Improve me nt Association’s Angel Tree stands in the lobby of the Coast Discovery Inn hotel with the names of 300 local kids hanging on the tree. Those who wish to participate with the Angel Tree are invited to select a tag hanging from the tree which identifies the child’s age

and gender, their needs and their wants. Some of the items from the card are purchased as gifts and then returned to the Angel Tree unwrapped. Volunteers then sort through the gifts, wrap them and turn them over to local agencies to be delivered to the children in time for Christmas. Dawn Hamilton, who has been co-ordinating the Angel Tree for five years, said the kids have already been selected for the tree by several social agencies whose case workers have identified the children in need. “The workers work closely with the families

so they know them very well,” says Hamilton, who works for Campbell River Family Services. “Because I work with some of the clients on the tree, I see the direct benefit and gratitude of the families that receive the gifts. For some families, this will be the only Christmas present they receive this year.” The cards specify the basic needs of the child such as toiletries and diapers for the babies as well as items such as jackets, socks, and underwear. The wants are typically toys, colouring books, or games, depending on the age of the child.

The Angel Tree begins this afternoon, Nov. 29, during Starlight Shopping at 4 p.m. and runs until 9 p.m. Tags can be picked up at the Coast Discovery Inn and items dropped off no later than Dec. 8. Pick-up and drop-off times are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. between Nov. 30 and Dec. 8. The Angel Tree is also accepting monetary donations as well as donations of new toys and clothes. and that is the acceptance in Washington State that ferries are extensions of the highway system. They are even referred to as ‘mobile bridges’.” The local MLA found the no-frills Washington ferries far more affordable than BC Ferries. That, she said, means more riders which helps support coastal communities and their economies. In contrast, BC Ferries higher fares and fewer sailings are hurting island communities and families on budgets. Trevena’s report is available online at http:// bit.ly/17ZjCvc

North Island MLA Claire Trevena has released a report on her recent fact-finding trip to Washington State to see how it runs coastal ferries. The NDP’s transportation critic toured the state ferry system in October and the biggest difference, in her view, is that it’s treated as part of the road system. “Washington State’s ferry system is by no means perfect, and it is facing many of the same challenges and rising expenses that our system is facing,” Trevena said in a news releasee. “But there is a key difference, ✩✩

Annual Enchanted Forest returns

The Campbell River Hospital Foundation is holding the sixth annual Enchanted Forest. The location has changed this year to the Tidemark Theatre. This event has become a favorite amongst the participating sponsors, with each trying to out-decorate the other. This year’s tree sponsors include Crown Pacific Developments, D’Arcy Frankland – Notary Public, All in One Party Shop, Ron and Carol Chapman, Steve Marshall Ford, Quay West Restaurant, Joanne Johnson – Notary Public, Discovery Laser, Kwakiutl District Council and Quality Foods. This event will run from Nov. 29 - Dec. 11 with the viewing of the trees open to the public during the Tidemark box office hours (Tuesday-Saturday 12-4 p.m.). Pictures of the trees will also be online at www.crhospitalfoundation.ca and on Facebook. Bidding on the trees will take place through a silent auction, and the highest bidder on Dec. 11 will “win” the tree and all the décor that comes with it. The event sponsors are Tidemark Theatre, Quality Foods, the Eagle 97.3 fm and the Campbell River Mirror. Funds from this year’s event will be supporting the purchase of a fetal monitor for the hospital Maternity Department. A fetal monitor is used to monitor the baby in uteri as well as during labor; this allows staff to know if labor is progressing normally or if there are any complications and if the baby is in distress. For more information about this year’s event call the Foundation Office at 850-2418.

DEATHS

June 27, 1933November 17, 2013

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to John (Ted)Fairfax. Ted was a familiar face to many in Campbell River as he stood in front of the fire at his family’s Seawalk Coffee Bar greeting friends and strangers alike. He entertained everyone with his humor and stories he would share about his life. He will be deeply missed by his brother Bobby ( Kaarina), sister Ilean “Tootsie, wife Phyllis, son Dale and grandson Jonathan, daughter Kim (Harry) grandchildren Amber & Dalyn. Condolences to his CP Rail, BC Rail and Alberni Pacific Railway friends. Please come join us for a potluck celebration for Ted at FoggDukkers Coffee Bar on the Seawalk on November 30th, 2013 beginning at 1pm. All are welcome. I would like to extend a special thank you to our true dear friend Dr. Michael Meckin. Thank you for the borrowed time. It meant everything. Life isn’t measured by the breaths we take but by the moments that take our breath away.

LPN AND SUPPORT WORKERS

INFORMATION

To Paddy, It’s been a year since you left and I miss you a lot. You were a real true friend of mine. I miss our lunch dates and our tour around town looking at stuff and the odd time acting up (me) and you laughing. Miss the phone message, “Hi there, just seeing how things were up on the farm? and all the gifts you would give me. I think of you when I see them. I’m sad I never got to say goodbye to you but I look forward to saying hello again one day and maybe up there, there are no rules and we can really act up if it’s okay with Sharon. Love from Daryl Devlin and Family. P.S. Braxton often asks about you or says, “Remember that time with Paddy?

he Knights of Columbus in Campbell River have come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1963. Its membership has grown from a handful of Knights to more than 100 members. But their mission is still the same – to help the Catholic church and be a good community partner. Earlier this month, on Nov. 2. the Knights of Columbus celebrated 50 years in Campbell River and helping the community. The evening opened with a traditional piper

One of the Knights of Columbus’ most high profile activities is collecting donations for Christmas hampers which are delivered to needy families in the Campbell River area. This year’s campaign is underway again.

Reverend Richard Gagnon, the former Bishop of Victoria who was recently appointed Archbishop of Winnipeg, gave a speech on peace and conflict resolution while Mayor Walter Jakeway spoke and proclaimed November and December Knights of Columbus Christmas Hamper Drive months. The Hamper is one of the Knights’ most long standing traditions in Campbell River, dating back approximately 39 years. Last year, the Knights delivered more than 1,200 hampers to Campbell River families with each hamper worth more than $100. The Knights also provide bursaries each year to high school students to pursue post secondary education as well as support the Perinatal Society, Birthright, Citizens on Patrol, the Campbell River food bank, the Meals on

Today, there are 15,832 councils in 14 countries around the world. Danny Brown, one of the founding members of the Knights of Columbus, was on hand at the anniversary celebration to share some of his memories. Brown surprised everyone when he produced a marble that won a tournament between the Knights of Columbus and the Shrine Club that took place in 1966 on the sand at the Tyee Spit. Brown presented the marble to current Shrine Club president Mark Donaldson. The moment was photographed to put the mar-

One of the Cards for Kim produced by Runaway Souls as a fundraiser for the fight against cystic fibrosis.

Cards for Kim – Unique holiday cards to benefit the fight against Cystic Fibrosis

“Thrilling” is the word Risa Branchi, president of Cystic Fibrosis

Canada’s Campbell River Chapter, uses to talk about the beautiful Holiday cards designed by Erin Wallis and Shannon Andrews of Runaway Souls. All proceeds are in support of the fight against cystic fibrosis. Kim Wood, who has cystic fibrosis, spends at least four hours a day on therapy and medical procedures to help fight the disease. She was diagnosed with CF at 16 months of age and thanks to advances in care she is now 32 years old. Her health has declined in the past two years and she requires frequent courses of intravenous antibiotics. Wood said, “I couldn’t be more grateful to Erin and Shannon for taking the time out of their busy lives to work on the CF holiday card project – they are remarkably talented and giving people.” Wood grew up in Campbell River and said she is tremendously grateful to the community for supporting the cystic fibrosis cause. Erin Wallis is a close friend of Kim. “I have watched Kim struggle with this devastating disease her entire life – we grew up together as friends and neighbours,” said Wallis. “I would hold her hand and read to her when she was little as her Mom pounded on her chest to help loosen lung secretions – now it breaks my heart to see her health decline.” Wallis’ awareness of cystic fibrosis and it’s implications were

Kim Wood

heightened by having an uncle who had passed away from it at the age of 24. This is the second year these talented women have worked their hearts out on this initiative. Since we saw them last year with their west coast inspired CF holiday cards, they’ve been busy. They’ve each had a baby this year, been busy with full lives and still say they “can’t help but make more cards for

Cystic Fibrosis.” This past month, they have spent time dragging around cars full of ornaments, fishing tackle and now Santa… these girls were spotted creating these cards at the Campbell River, as well as the beautiful Dolphins Resort. Wallis said, “It feels completely normal to decorate a Christmas tree as the sun sets over the Tyee Pool at the spit here in town.” These women are fiercely determined to help find a cure for CF, in the most creative way they know how. “Shannon and I have a strong, passionate desire to create. Always. Our motto is Anything is Possible. With our card company Runaway Soul we just believe in

sharing our wild visions to create a positive expression of what we love, and what is possible. In the past we try and spread the love around with donations benefiting other incredibly worthy causes, however, this year hasn’t been an easy one for Kim and her struggle and determination to stay positive and keep fighting had us wanting to do something more for Cystic Fibrosis,” said Wallis. Joining Run Away Souls in this project is Ayaz Amlani from Sure Copy in Campbell River who has donated all his time and printing costs to make sure Cystic Fibrosis Canada benefits greatly from the cards. Also Monk’s Office Supplies has donated all of the envelopes for the cards, so when you buy these unique Christmas cards you can feel really good that you are contributing in a big way. Bulk orders are possible or they are sold in pack-

ages of five different cards. Risa Branchi, said, “We are so grateful to Erin and Shannon of Runaway Soul and Sure Copy for all they do for the CF cause – and to the business owners who have offered to sell them in their stores.” They are for sale at Appleseed Cottage, Gourmet Essentials, Bikram Yoga, River Sportsman, Balloons ‘n More Party Shop and the Dolphins Gift Shop or visit website www. crcf.ca. Cystic Fibrosis Cystic fibrosis is the most common fatal genetic disease affecting Canadian children and young adults. It is a multi-system disease that mainly affects the lungs and the digestive system. Most deaths related to cystic fibrosis are due to lung disease. Severe respiratory problems result from a buildup of thick mucus in the lungs of CF patients, where the effects are

most devastating. Mucus and protein also build up in the digestive tract, making it difficult to digest and absorb nutrients from food. There are 4,000 Canadians living with cystic fibrosis. Cystic Fibrosis Canada Cystic Fibrosis Canada is one of the world’s top three charitable organizations committed to finding a cure for cystic fibrosis and the only non-government organization in Canada investing in vital CF research and care. In 2012/2013, it invested more than $7.5 million in research and clinical care.

A Look Back

THE HISTORY OF THE CAMPBELL RIVER AREA

A merry mishap: Remembering the wreck of the SS Northwestern *ALBERT BIGOLD

of fresh oranges, just bobbing around in the waves, and bananas, and turkeys and ham and flour … My older sister and I had a whale of a time running to the beach and back with all our treasures. It wasn’t gold, but it was good as gold. The next morning, another American ship, the SS Alameda, picked up the Alaska bound passengers from the Northwestern, so it turned out that in the end, they had their Christmas too. * Actually, Catherine Gilbert

MUSEUM AT CAMPBELL RIVER

I was there when the steamship Northwestern ran aground. That was December 15, 1927, and I was seven years old. I remember it well, because our family farm was perfectly situated where we could get a bird’s eye view of the entire event, and while some folks might think it was a tragic event, for us it was an answer to a prayer. It had been a tough few years on Quadra Island. Of course on our farm, we raised our own chickens, we kids tended the garden and fished, and my dad hunted. My mother canned and smoked fish and put up preserves… but it wasn’t always easy to get anything fresh, especially in winter. On the day in question, there was a terrific snowstorm and it was a wonder if anyone could see even a foot in front of themselves. When you’re out on the water, it’s easy to lose sight of the land and for sea and sky to meet as one big white blanket. Around here, it’s not too unusual for winter to bring heavy storms and gale force winds. These a person can weather comfortably from shore; out on the water though, that’s a whole other kettle of fish. So the SS Northwestern, an American vessel, was on its way up from Seattle to Alaska, and was attempting to head into the passage between us and Vancouver Island when trouble began. The captain of the Northwestern had been following the Union Steamship

SS Chelohsin since Vancouver, but as he approached Quadra Island, he lost sight of the Chelohsin’s light as it veered right to head towards Cortes, and the Northwestern ran smack into the rocks at a point fondly known as ‘The Hump’. It was a frigid day, and not much hope was held out for survivors. But good fortune was with the crew and passengers as the ship ran aground in such a way that it didn’t actually sink immediately, and the Explorer of Juneau fishing boat was out in no time at all to see who and what could be rescued. My dad took his own little skiff out with the help of his brother, my Uncle Herbert, and they went straight into that weather to attempt to bring people to safety. It took a couple of trips, but eventually, everyone, all 187 passengers, were safely loaded onto the two boats and taken across the way for the short

trip to the Willows Hotel in Campbell River. But I bet you, it must have felt like a long ride for those folks who had almost gone overboard to meet their fate in Davy Jones locker. As it turned out, we heard they were treated well – warmed up and given hot coffee, and even a dance and entertainment was arranged! Well, I could end my story here, but I haven’t got to the good part yet. As I was saying earlier, it was a rare treat for us to get anything fresh during the long winter months. The SS Northwestern happened to be loaded to the gills with all sorts of wonderful items destined for Christmas in Alaska. Now, I’m no expert on maritime law, but our understanding growing up was that if it washed ashore, it was finders, keepers. Even more than that, if it drifted within close proximity to the shore, that is, within reach of the family skiff,

then it could be claimed too, with no questions asked. So that is how we came to have an exceptionally nice Christmas that year, filled with the bounty that we all come to associate with the Yuletide season. And I’m talking about a bounty! There were crates

5th Annual River Relief Truck set for Dec. 2 www.CampbellRiverMirror.com www.CampbellRiverMirror.com

For the fifth year, 99.7 The River is hosting the River Relief Truck in support of the Campbell River Food Bank and other local charities. Last year, in 12 days, the River Relief Truck raised a tractor trailer load of non-perishable food items which supplied the CR Food Bank well into the new year. The River Relief Truck will be located down-

town in Mariner Square starting Monday, December 2nd. It’s about giving back to the community. it’s extremely important that we take care of those less fortunate in Campbell River ... and Christmas is the largest time of need. 99.7 The River Morning Show Host, Rickie Tyler, is committing herself to live out of a 53 foot transport trailer,

from Van Kam Transportation, until it is full. 99.7 The River will be broadcasting live from the trailer for the duration of the River Relief Truck, encouraging the community to support the initiative and bring donations to the downtown location in Mariner Square on Dogwood Street. The public and local businesses

went above and beyond last year in their support. Organizers were overwhelmed by the community’s generosity. On ‘Turkey Tuesday’, they put the call out for turkeys for the Salvation Army. By the end of the day well over 600 turkeys had been donated. The need for food donations continues to be high, and the goal is to

once again fill the semi-trailer with non-perishable food donations. 99.7 The River is asking the community for their support this year starting December 2nd. Get your business involved, your sports team, school, association or even just your own household. For further details on involvement, contact the station at 250-287-7106.

bring together families in the community for a festive event that will not only put smiles on their face, but also food on the table of those less fortunate. Admission is by donation with 20 per cent being donated to the local food bank,” says Abel O’Brennan Co-Owner and Winemaker at Coastal Black Estate Winery. Within three-years of starting Coastal Black Estate Winery the family owned and operated winery has transformed to an award-winning winery with fruit wines and meads in over 80 private liquor stores across Vancouver Island. The Grade 12 Carihi Sec-

ondary student recently committed to Northwestern after coaches with the premier U.S. women’s lacrosse program saw her speed and scoring touch. “The assistant coach saw me playing at last year’s President’s Cup in Florida. It was only the second field lacrosse game I had ever played. She liked it, I guess,” says Lasota. Carihi principal Sean Toal sums it up another way, “She’s very modest, but a fierce competitor.” Lasota, 17, grew up in Campbell River playing box lacrosse for the Ravens organization. She was one of the leading scorers on the provincial champion peewee squad and she’s progressed ever since, thanks in part to the boys. “I got my speed from trying to keep up to the boys – I was always up there with the boys –

amateur athlete who’s paid her own way with the help of her family. “I could have played for Canada. I was really bummed out I couldn’t go, but I figure that I have lots of opportunities,” she says. Travelling to Vancouver to regularly practice, buying equipment, having some spending money for bigger trips all adds up. Her parents

have supported her in all ways, but this summer Lasota decided she needed to work to “help out.” “It says a lot about her character,” notes Toal. But don’t feel too sorry for Lasota. She spent the summer living with her grandparents in the stunningly beautiful West Coast community of Kyuquot working for Murphy’s Sportfishing lodge as a housekeeper. “I have no regrets,” she states. “I spent time with my grandparents, went boating and kayaking… how cool is that?” And now it’s back to business. She’s got the school side down, averaging A’s and B’s, and she’s satisfied the academic demands of the U.S. which allowed her to sign with the Northwestern Wildcats. Lasota is expected in Chicago Dec. 5, to take part in a lacrosse clinic and then she’s due back

in the spring, along with the rest of her new teammates for orientation. And last week Lasota was back in Florida, playing again for Team BC at the President’s Cup for women’s field lacrosse. The tournament was featured by Insidelacrosse.com who profiled 10 athletes, just one of whom was Canadian. It was Lasota, of course. Here’s what writer Danielle Bernstein of Inside Lacrosse had to say about Lasota’s game at the attack and midfield positions: “(She) was one of the best players on the field. An extremely athletic player with speed who could also take draws, Lasota has a rocket shot, can bury the ball from long range and she had the ability to take over a game. When Team BC Canada went down 3-0 early against RC

Elite Gold, she scored the next three goals, most on strong dodges to the cage, to knot the game and give her team momentum.” Typically, first-year university players only practice with the team as “Redshirt” freshmen and then are slowly given more playing time as they mature to their senior year. And most first-year players should expect that when they’re joining a team which has won seven of eight national championships – the last coming in 2012 – but not Lasota. “My goal right now is to get to Northwestern and keep doing what I’m doing,” she says. “My goal is to play and to be the best. I want to play in a lot of games in my freshman year and, yes, to strive to be the best!” And, for the record, Lasota likes purple, the colour of the Wildcats.

PROCESS

LA-LA Land auto extravaganza LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Auto Show is full of eye-popping sights and some even include cars! It’s not difficult to have your head turned but it is a challenge to pick one’s top picks but I’m for the challenge. Nissan GT-R Nismo Nissan stole the show with not only one of the fastest cars in the world but the fastest man in the world. Olympic gold medalist and world record holder Usain Bolt was on hand as Nissan’s Director of Excitement. Usain was clearly taken with the new GT-R Nismo, there were also promises to get him one to replace his gold coloured GT-R. Power has been pumped up to 600hp taking this new Nismo version to 100 km/h in just two seconds. Look for the new GT-R in the spring of 2014. I suspect Usain will get his a bit earlier. Chevrolet Colorado The mid-size pickup truck market has been all but abandoned by the domestic automakers over the last few years leaving this category entirely to Toyota and Nissan with the Tacoma and Frontier trucks. Wait until next year and the choice will include the all-new Colorado from Chevrolet. Building off the success of the all-new full-size Silverado, the engineers have taken the same approach to this new truck. On the economy front, eventually there will be three engines to choose from. Out of gate, there is the base 2.5L 4-cylinder engine or a 3.6L V6. Subaru WRX Fans of the Subaru WRX will be very excited about the arrival of an all-new car but maybe a bit disappointed that this production model

1710 Island Hwy, Campbell River 250-286-6132 www.associatedtireandauto.ca

doesn’t look very much little the sleek and sexy concept that was unveiled earlier this year. It should prove to be a capable car thanks to an all-new direct injection 2.0L 4-cylinder putting out 268hp and matched to the first 6-speed in the WRX. Subaru Legacy Concept A head Zack Spencer turning design that my sources tell me looks a lot like the production car. The metallic, almost chrome looking paint, certainly helps to make the car pop but the bold front grille and macho stance could very well be included in the final version. Lincoln MKC Lincoln has a long and distinguished history as an American premium brand but over the last few decades, it has been an extension of existing Ford products using different badging and trim. There is now a long-term plan to resurrect the Lincoln brand with all-new vehicle that use some Ford components but are developed separately from the main Ford line of products. The compact crossover MKC shares a platform with the Ford Escape but has been designed and engineered to be a very different car. The design, other than the trademark Lincoln grille is very European and the back wrap-around hatch is maybe Audi-inspired. Standard in Canada will be all-wheel-drive and adaptive suspension, matched to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

BMW 4 Series Cabriolet BMW has changed its naming: the 3 Series is now the sedan only while the coupe and convertible version are now called 4 Series. The all-new cabriolet is wider and features a new three-piece retractable hardtop and for the first time X-Drive AWD is now available on the convertible models. Interior refinements include a new neck warmer to that blows a steady stream of warm air on the front passengers neck and shoulders, helping to elongate the convertible season. Porsche Macan This small SUV is based on the same platform as the Audi Q5. This lower, sleeker and much more aggressive Macan will attract a lot of attention based purely on looks. Porsche made it very clear that this is not juts a Porsche in name but also in performance. Look for the Macan coming next year. Jaguar F-Type Jaguar made a big splash with the Jaguar F-Type convertible this year and next year we look forward to the coupe version, a dynamite looking coupe with a stunning silhouette and improved dynamics thanks to a stiffer body. The body of the car is built with extensive use of aluminum to produce the stiffest Jaguar ever made. This is one heart-pounding coupe I cannot wait to try. zack.spencer@ddrivewayBC.ca

Drive Smart BC Obscenities on Vehicles

2X14

Every so often I get asked to write about something that makes me pause and think for a moment. This article is one of those as the reader asked “Could you clarify what the law is in BC regarding offensive words, statements, illustrations etc. on vehicles in use on public roads? For example, I recently saw a truck advising anyone interested that the driver masturbates. Maybe there are no limits these days?” I suppose that the most important point to examine is how do we determine what is obscene? The Supreme Court of Canada has said that indecent criminal conduct [or obscenity] will be established where the Crown proves beyond a reasonable doubt the following two requirements: That, by its nature, the conduct at issue causes harm or presents a significant risk of harm to individuals or society in a way that undermines or threatens to undermine a value reflected in and thus formally endorsed through the Constitution or similar fundamental laws

TYEE CHEV

That the harm or risk of harm is of a degree that is incompatible with the proper functioning of society. While we both may justifiably think that what you observed is in poor taste and the vehicle owner should not be able to do this sort of thing, it would never meet the criminal definition of obscene. There are no motor vehicle laws or bylaws that could be used in place of a criminal charge either. Since it is not far off of some prime time television content, we will just have to choose to ignore it. The author is a retired constable with many years of traffic law enforcement experience. Campbell River’s first Jiu Jitsu blackbelt

Campbell River’s Jodey Ingalls recently achieved his Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Professor Don Whitefield, head of the west Coast Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Association. “This is very special and a great honour,” Ingalls says. “I am now only one of three black belts on Vancouver

Island. “It has been about 6 and a half years, 6,500 hours of training and teaching for me to achieve this black belt.” Ingalls has just returned from Waikiki Training under ninet i me worl d champion Professor Rubens Charles Cobrinha and Professor Whitefield.

After completing the winter training camp he was awarded his BJJ Black Belt. Ingalls is the head instructor of Pure Martial Arts & Fitness. He has more than 35 years experience in martial arts and started studying martial arts at the age of seven. He also currently holds high levels in sev-

BC Coastal Ferries Community Engagement 4x6.42 November 18 to December 20, 2013

The BC Coastal Ferry Service has been wrestling with cost pressures for more than 20 years which, if not addressed, could threaten the sustainability of the entire system.

Accordingly, the Province has engaged coastal communities and ferry users from across the province on strategies to ensure the long-term sustainability of the coastal ferry network. The Province will undertake a further round of community engagement in 2013 following a province-wide consultation in 2012.

How Input Will Be Used Input received through the community engagement process will be compiled and presented to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and BC Ferries as they plan for the long-term sustainability of the coastal ferry network.

The Program Supervisor at Street Haven shelter in Toronto wrote about the Shoebox Project: “The women loved the boxes and all of the items in them … they loved the make-up, chocolates and body care product.” The Shoebox Project operates in many cities across Canada and this year we would like to brighten the holidays of as many of the women as possible who have accessed shelter services this past year in the Campbell River area. A few suggestions of what you could include in your shoebox are (but are not limited to): n Body or hand lotions

Alison Skrepneck and Susan Dyson have started up the Campbell River Shoebox Project.

n Makeup: mascara, lipstick and nail polish. n Chocolates, cookies, candies n Toothpaste, toothbrush or floss n Shampoo, conditioner n Brush, comb n Phone cards n Other scent free personal items (No perfumes or razors please) n Pool, bowling or movie passes n Gift cards (McDonald’s, Tim Horton’s, Shoppers Drug Mart, Wal-Mart). Be sure to include the value of the card (if possible, include the receipt). n inspirational quote or message You could create your own box or get together with a group of friends and have each person contribute one element to many boxes. Here are some general guidelines: 1. Value: Keep the value of your shoebox contents to approximately $50. At this time, they are not able to provide tax receipts for your donations. 2. Packaged Goods Only: Make sure that the

gifts are all packaged, sealed and unused. 3. Decoration: You may decorate your shoebox with a pretty holiday or Christmas bow but do not wrap your shoebox as it must be opened for inspection before it can be distributed. 4. Drop off: Bring your shoebox to the following drop off locations from Tuesday until Friday Dec. 13: n Coastal Community Credit Union, Discovery Harbour n Serendipity in the Garden, Shoppers Row n Sundance Java Bar, Sunrise Square at Willow Point They hope to collect as many shoeboxes as possible to provide the women in Campbell River who have accessed shelter services this past year with a special gift this holiday season. Open House for Haig-Brown Writer in Residence An open house reception for the 2013/2014 Writer in Residence is being held at the HaigBrown Heritage House on Sunday, Dec. 1 from 1-3 p.m. Take this opportunity to welcome author Andrew Nikiforuk, this year’s writer, who will be staying at the House from December to April.

For more than two decades Nikiforuk has written about energy, economics and the West for a variety of Canadian publications. He has won seven National Magazine Awards since 1989 and top honours for investigative writing. His book The Tar Sands: Dirty Oil and

the Future of the Continent, published by Greystone Books, was a national bestseller and won the 2009 Rachel Carson Environment Book Award. It was also listed as a finalist for the Grantham Prize for Excellence in Reporting on the Environment. Nikiforuk is a skilled

teacher and public speaker whose personal interests are an excellent fit with the programming mandate at the HaigBrown House, which he noted in his application letter to the Haig-Brown House Writer in Residence program: “Given the focus of this work (how Canadians use

and abuse their resource wealth), I feel that I can enrich this residency and honour the great HaigBrown legacy.” While he is here, he will participate in Museum programming and be available to help writers with their manuscripts. Call the Museum 250-287-3103 for details.

When buying travel insurance, make sure to ask your insurance broker if the private travel insurer is the first payor. If the private travel insurer is the first payor, it will be responsible for paying your U.S. medical bills and your ICBC Benefits will be preserved for their rightful purpose - your rehabilitation. If the private travel insurer is the second payor, or what is sometimes called “excess insurance”, then you might find that your ICBC benefit entitlement will be used to pay your U.S. medical bills. If your U.S. medical bills exceed the $150,000.000 available to you under ICBC Benefits, then you are left with no money for rehabilitation. To learn more go to www.awslaw.ca

Local Aboriginal students receive Irving K. Barber scholarships The Irving K. Barber British Columbia Scholarship Society has granted a total of $813,000 to a record 265 Aboriginal students in B.C. to support their studies at post-secondary colleges and universities

throughout the province. Two Campbell River students, Jesse Spooner (University of Victoria) and Rory Shade (University of British Columbia), are among the recipients. The $813,000 represents a near doubling in

the number and value of Aboriginal Awards granted by the society the previous year. The Society’s Aboriginal Awards program is funded from the returns on a $12 million endowment fund estab-

lished by the Province, and an additional $2M fund created in 2012 to encourage more Aboriginal students to become teachers, and $1M for Aboriginal students pursuing Masters and Doctoral studies. Awards

of between $1,000 and $5,500 each are issued to students through a competitive process every year. The awards programs are intended to assist in removing barriers to higher education for the province’s

Aboriginal peoples. “Throughout our province, more Aboriginal students are succeeding in their post-secondary studies and taking advantage of the exciting job opportunities,” said Advanced EducaTELUS STORE OR AUTHORIZED DEALER

tion Minister Amrik Virk. “Congratulations to these deserving students, and best of luck in your classes.” In accepting his 2013 Ab or ig ina l Student Award, Gage LeBlanc, who is studying Business Administration at Camosun College, offered the following comment about its impact. “By granting me this award, the financial burden of post-secondary education has been extensively lightened,” he said. “This will allow me to put more time and effort into my studies… and I am inspired to help others to make the decision to enter a college or university program.” “Ab original youth are the fastest growing demographic in our population and yet they are under-represented at our colleges and universities. Through these awards, the Irving K Barber Scholarship Society hopes to encourage more Aboriginal students to pursue post-secondary education to secure the skills and training they will need to reach their full potentials,” said Society Chair, Hugh Gordon. The Irving K. Barber BC Scholarship Society provides scholarships to students attending public post-secondary institutions throughout the province and internationally. Since its inception, the Society has awarded over $5 million from its six scholarship and award programs.

Drive safely this holiday season The holiday season brings with it familiar and necessary messages reminding Canadians to drive sober. While impairment behind the wheel is most often associated with alcohol, motorists are also gambling with their safety and the safety of others by driving under the influence of drugs. These drugs include illegal substances, prescription medications and over-the-counter remedies. This National Safe Driving Week, from Dec. 1-7, the Canada Safety Council seeks to educate Canadians that driving while under the influence of drugs is dangerous, irresponsible, illegal and becoming increasingly prevalent. It is posing a significant public safety risk that needs to be curbed, the council says.
