City looks to curb graffiti Kristen Douglas Campbell RiveR miRRoR
The city is considering a new method to crack down on tagging. After a summer full of vandalism complaints, a city commission is recommending council implement a city policy on tagging of city property and equipment. Ross Milnthorp, the city’s general manger of parks, recreation, and culture, said the Community Services, Recreation and Culture Commission believes
tougher rules may deter vandals. “ The commission agrees that a review of graffiti related bylaws and the establishment of a policy to deal with graffiti will lead to a reduction in graffiti and graffiti-related costs to both the private and public sector in Campbell River,” Milnthorp said in a report to council. The commission is further recommending the policy include establishing a call line to report tagging.
The commission’s recommendations have been prompted by a string of vandalism that occurred throughout the summer. Taggers targeted local businesses, schools, the public washrooms at Ken Forde Park, trail signs at both the Myrt Thompson Trail and Haig Brown Trail, as well as at the Sportsplex, Strathcona Gardens and Centennial Pool. RCMP Insp. Lyle Gelinas told city council in September that Campbell River RCMP’s
crime analyst has been cataloging the images to compare similarities in the tags to try and identify the culprits. Through the work of the analyst, one offender with no known ties to Campbell River and who had been tagging in several communities on the Island, was identified as a suspect in multiple tagging locations in the city bearing large graffiti script. Other young offenders over the summer were also identified and were required to clean up and
pay for the damage they caused. Under the city’s existing nuisance bylaw, which covers graffiti, businesses are also required to clean up tags and those that don’t can be fined $150. The bylaw also imposes a $200 fine on offenders. City council was expected to consider the commission’s recommendation to create a graffiti policy at Tuesday night’s council meeting after the Mirror went to press.

through undetermined locations for the remainder of the operating season,” Decksheimer said. After the 2012 season, the city hired a professional engineer to review the facility’s operations which revealed a number of areas where the pool was not in compliance with current B.C. Pool Regulations. To bring the pool up
to code, the city permanently sealed the main floor drains and added a new line to the circulation piping system. “At this point it was expected that permanently sealing the pool’s 50-year-old main floor drains would solve the previous leak,” Decksheimer said. “The pool was filled in June 2013 however, the pool continued to leak water to an even worse extent than

in 2012. During investigation it was discovered that the addition of the new circulation piping had hastened the deterioration of the surrounding basin concrete.” Decksheimer said that despite repairing the leak, the pool lost thousands of litres of water during the 2013 season. Though much of the problem was attributed to the leak, Decksheimer noted its common for outdoor pools to also lose water from uncontrolled sources such as evaporation and splash out. However, an assessment done this fall determined the main sources of water loss are suspected to be through a large number of hairline cracks in the basin, the construction joints in the pool basin, in one of the 60 penetrations through the pool walls such as jets and skimmers, or between the pool walls
and floor. D e cksheimer s aid council will likely need to shell out funding for repairs in 2014. T he opt i ons are : reseal the pool basin for $90,000 which will allow the pool to be operational for the next three to five years; replace the main pool basin at a cost of $500,000; or do not do any repairs, acknowledging the pool will leak up to 100,000 plus litres per day resulting in increased operating costs and accepting the potential for the leak to worsen which could result in a complete shutdown. “The aging basin of the main pool is now 53-years-old and is coming to the end of its anticipated life,” Decksheimer said. “While short-term repairs may keep it in operation, council will need to consider the pool’s long-term viability going forward.”

affordably.” Storry added it will also provide better access to medical services for those living in Bella Bella. “Our mid-coast neighbours will now easily be able to conduct business and receive medical attention at our soon to be new hospital in Campbell River,” Storry said. The service is also aimed at benefitting resource-based companies in the fishing, logging and energy sectors. Susan Sinnott, chair of the Campbell River Airport Authority, said she already knows of at least one person who will use the service for that particular reason. “I was talking to a friend of mine in the fishing industry and he said it’s going to be a great thing for them,”

Pacific Coastal launched its inaugural flight between Campbell River and the central coastal community of Bella Bella Monday morning. The flight, which was scheduled to depart Campbell River Airport (YBL) at 10:30 a.m. was full. “It’s pretty exciting to see the inaugural flight already sold out,” Kevin B o ot h royd, Pa c i f i c Coastal’s director of sales and marketing, said at a launch event Monday. “It’s an indication of the pent-up demand.” The flight, which will originate out of Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and will be serviced by Pacific Coastal’s Beechcraft 1900 plane, runs once a day, three
days a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. It will depart Vancouver International’s south terminal at 9:30 a.m. for Campbell River where it will leave at 10:30 a.m. for arrival in Bella Bella at 11:30 a.m. The return flight is scheduled to depart Bella Bella at 2:15 p.m., leave Campbell River Airport at 3:45 p.m. and arrive at YVR at 4:25 p.m. Acting Mayor Mary Storry said the new service will be a boon for both Campbell River and Bella Bella. “This new scheduled route will provide a variety of opportunities for our respective communities,” Storry said. “Local businesses working in the mid-coast will be able to transport their work crews and freight more efficiently and

Business goes on in wake of bankruptcy Pallan president says family businesses will continue Paul Rudan Campbell RiveR miRRoR
Three companies of the Pallan Group are going bankrupt, but president Derik Pallan insists the family-owned business is moving forward and will continue to do business. “We’ve been here for 50 years and we’ll be here for another 50 – we’re all staying,” he told the Mir-
ror on Monday. It was the same refrain from Pallan in October when the Campbell River-based company was going through a restructuring process and the accounting firm KPMG was appointed receiver of the limited companies: Pallan Timber Products, Pallan Holdings and Howe Sound Forest Products.
But Pallan said negotiations with the bank broke down and those three companies are now going bankrupt. In a legal notice in Friday’s Mirror, KPMG reported the three companies filed for bankruptcy on Nov. 22, and a first meeting of creditors will take place Dec. 11, 1 p.m., at the Coast Discovery Inn. In spite of the setback, Pallan said the company is moving forward on its other business interests which include logging,
real estate, construction and coal mining. The company still intends to build a 20-unit apartment complex, with a liquor store, by the Big Rock Motel which it also owns. “Our other companies are doing business more than ever,” said Pallan. Middle Point Project Pallan-owned Pacific Rim Developments has partnered with the Cape Mudge Indian Band to develop the Middle Point
port and forestry-related businesses, located just north of the city. A formal announcement on the project was expected last winter, but there have been delays, said Cape Mudge Band Chief Ralph Dick. However, on Tuesday, he said the port breakwater will be built using rock coming from the new BC Hydro tunnel that’s part of the John Hart Generating Station reconstruction project. Work is expected to begin next spring to blast
The violent side of Rivercity street life Paul Rudan
Campbell RiveR miRRoR
Living on the street is tough – the violence only makes it worse. The brutal reality of street life in Campbell River was brought into the provincial courtroom on Monday during a bail hearing for Lucille Billy. T h e 3 7 - y e a r- o l d , with no fixed address, is charged with assault causing bodily harm, two counts of assault, possession of marijuana and three counts of breaching a court order. The alleged victim in the assault causing bodily harm charge is Maria Rufus who often lives on the street and is no stranger to police. “Ms. Rufus is a longterm actor in these dramas,” defence lawyer Doug Marion told the court.
Crown prosecutor asked for Billy’s detention based on her criminal record – 44 convictions – her history of not complying with court orders and her struggles with alcohol. According to police files, on Feb. 27, 2013, an employee of the Salvation Army Lighthouse Centre called RCMP to report an assault in progress. It is alleged that Billy repeatedly punched Rufus in the face, causing “significant injuries” and a possible broken nose. Marion contends the two women, who know each other, were involved in a mutual altercation. Nevertheless, Billy was arrested and later released on conditions. On the afternoon of Nov. 28, police were called to investigate an assault on another woman. The woman
was walking between the Lighthouse soup kitchen and Mariner Square when Billy allegedly attacked her. A male friend of the victim’s intervened, but Billy was gone by the time police arrived. About four hours later, around 6:30 p.m., Mounties were called to the parking lot by the Haida Inn to investigate another assault. This time it is alleged that Billy and Rufus had another encounter. This time though, Rufus apparently ducked Billy’s punch. However, it is alleged that Billy then assaulted another man, Robert Chickite, who is also well-known to authorities. This time Billy was arrested and held in custody until Monday’s bail hearing. Marion told the
court that Billy will be pleading not guilty and the first assault case is slated for trial on Jan. 14. The defence lawyer also asked for Billy’s release based on a plan to have her stay at a friend’s home on Read Island. However, the man, said he was reluctant to post a cash surety on Billy’s behalf. The judge then asked Billy, who had a blackened left eye, if she could
abstain from alcohol. Billy quickly responded that she’s likely to drink during Christmas and New Year’s which didn’t impress the Judge Ron Lamperson. “I considered releasing Ms. Billy…(but) I’m not satisfied there are any conditions the court could impose that would reasonably prevent her from committing further (offences),” he said in ordering her detention. “One call, and we’ll do it all”

Our View
Yap’s alcohol argument has holes It’s difficult to know what problem the provincial government is possibly trying to fix. John Yap, who is reviewing B.C.’s liquor laws, is recommending that government allow stores to sell alcohol. We say: Minister’s grocery “British Columbians lead busy lives convenience and my final report makes several argument doesn’t recommendations that will bring greater convenience to citizens,” said hold water Yap. How time consuming is it actually to get a case of beer or bottle of wine? In Greater Vernon, alone, for example, there are 12
private liquor stores, one government outlet and two gas stations with rural liquor sales. Many of them are right next to grocery stores, so the argument can be made that the convenience is already there. What Mr. Yap needs to realize is that when government expanded liquor sales beyond just government outlets years ago, businesspeople took a risk and made significant investments in their operations. They not only employ local residents, but they support community endeavours and pump millions upon millions of dollars into provincial coffers for health care, education and other programs. By adding retail grocery into the mix, the revenue
stream for private and government stores will be undermined. Of course one can make the argument that this is how the free-enterprise system works and some private liquor store owners will benefit by selling their licenses to grocery retailers (there’s a cap on the total outlets allowed). Increased competition could also lower consumer prices. But if Yap is pushing for a change in rules based simply on increased convenience, one has to wonder when he last went out and bought wine. – Black Press

Thanks Mrs. Claus
Dear Mrs. Claus, Thank you for the very lovely company watching the truck parade on Friday night. You are such a dear and very special woman. You looked sparkly and radiant when you got in my little red car. I was happy to shelter you from the rain and keep your lovely red velvet dress dry. When you told me at your age you can still fit into the earrings you wore as a teenager, I was so impressed. I loved that every single truck in the parade created childlike squeals of delight from you. You were so cute yelling “Look Santa in a helicopter. That Santa has had too much rum and eggnog he’s falling over.” After all these years you still love Santa so much, you are an inspiration. I now understand from our conversation on gift giving so much more on the decision process you and Santa go through each year. I agree Jan Tees deserves a wonderful gift for creating such a magical evening by bringing together all of those that participated in such a wonderful community and family event. All those truck drivers and the people who took the time

B.C.’s greenhouse gas trial balloon leaks
Tom Fletcher B.C. Views
Last week I described the inevitable demise of B.C.’s “carbon neutral government” scheme, which continues to take millions from hospitals and schools to fund greenhouse gas reduction projects of questionable value. It’s like the AirCare program, a pollution solution that sounded great at the time. AirCare soon found itself chasing diminishing environmental returns, made redundant by new vehicle technology and the financial need to save fuel. Public sector carbon offsets will suffer the same fate, growing as a political liability as their effectiveness declines. All this is separate from B.C.’s carbon tax and greenhouse gas reduction program, another environmental trial balloon that is sinking back to Earth.
Former premier Gordon Campbell’s climate goals officially remain in place: 33 per cent greenhouse gas reduction by 2020 and a whopping 80 per cent by 2050. If the gas boom proceeds as planned, B.C. domestic emissions will not be down, but up substantially by 2020. New liquefied natural gas export proposals continue to pop up, the latest ones on former industrial sites near Squamish and Campbell River. And with the surge of LNG activity around Kitimat and Prince Rupert already changing the landscape, questions linger about the pollution and greenhouse gas impacts. As she left for the government’s largest ever trade mission to Asia, Premier Christy Clark dismissed a study that
estimated the impact of three LNG plants. That study, done by Kitimat environment group Skeena Wild, assumed “direct drive” technology to chill and compress gas for export. It concluded that three plants would burn two and a half times the amount of natural gas currently used in Metro Vancouver. Clark and Environment Minister Mary Polak relied on the same talking point to reject the study. The technology of powering LNG is still being negotiated, as producers work towards environmental permits, so the total can’t be calculated yet. BC Hydro is predicting little electricity demand for LNG until after 2020, which suggests the early development will either be direct drive, the industry
standard and simplest method, or building one or more gas-fired power plants in northwest B.C. Even if gas usage is only equivalent to one Lower Mainland, it’s plain to see greenhouse gas emissions are going up. Clark has repeatedly argued that B.C. LNG should get credit for displacing coal in China and elsewhere. I asked Polak if the international community would accept B.C.’s assertion that emissions from our LNG production shouldn’t count. “We haven’t said we won’t count them,” Polak replied. “What the premier’s talked about and I’ve talked about is that this whole issue of how one accounts for greenhouse gases in a particular region

back her emotions as she welcomed the more than 35 guests in attendance. “I didn’t expect it to happen so soon, but I knew I’d cry,” said a choked up Puetz with the Campbell River and North Island Transition Society. “Today is Thanksgiving in the United States. We’re not celebrating that here but we have a lot to be thankful for.” Puetz recalled that a safe, affordable home for women struggling to
overcome addition and fleeing abuse had been a priority for the Transition Society since 2006 and the home was a “long time coming.” As Puetz thanked the staff at the society for sticking it out and the women who have made Rose Habour their home, many guests couldn’t hold back their tears. “Thank you to our supporters; we called on you in our time of need and you’ve been there,” Puetz said. “Thank you for

vided some insight into what it’s like to live at Rose Harbour. O’Connell said her participation in the programs offered, such as her weekly meetings with the health nurse, have turned her life around.
“For many years I’ve lost myself to abuse and addition,” said O’Connell. “Somewhere along the line I lost the help and support of others, especially my daughters. It got to the point they would call to just make sure I

was alive. I was in and out of jail and I found myself homeless.” But that all changed with Rose Harbour. “Rose Harbour became my saviour,” O’Connell said. “With baby steps I’ve allowed myself to open up and accept help. Rose Harbour gave me a second chance and gave me the tools to succeed. I thank God every day for the staff at Rose Harbour; finally, I have a place to call home.” Gareau, a 24-year-old mother of three young girls, said Rose Harbour has taught her how to be a better parent. “I come from a long line of addition and abuse,” Gareau said. “Since staying at Rose Harbour I’ve learned healthy ways of dealing with addiction and how to be a good mother. The staff here does so much more than their job title. I’m so happy to have a beautiful home to raise my family.” Rose Harbour is also home to about 25 other women and their families. The apartments are rented out by the women, based on their income. The suites include a living room area, a kitchen, and a bed. Rose Harbour offers walking and stretching groups, morning meditation, yoga and exercise classes, access to child support workers, as well as community kitchen sessions. There are support workers on staff at Rose Harbour to provide whatever support the residents may need. Rose Harbour opened downtown on Dogwood Street in July. The $6.4 million facility was a joint project between B C Housing and the city, which donated the land valued at $431,072. The province provided $6 million for the construction and will fund the financing and annual operation costs of more than $600,000.

Who will be Rivercity’s Aladdin?
P
antomime (panto, informally, and not to be confused with mime) is a form of musical comedy for families, performed during the Christmas holiday season. It has a long tradition of using young female actors for the role of the principal young man, and though that isn’t always the case, the young Princess Elizabeth was a panto protagonist in WWII, wearing men’s attire complete with tights. Her sister, Princess Margaret, was the female love interest. Rivercity Players will be maintaining pantomime tradition when they bring their second Christmas pantomime to the Tidemark Theatre Dec. 28-30 with a matinee on Dec. 31. Remember last year’s first Rivercity pantomime Mother Goose? Well, they’re back with the alwayspopular panto version of Aladdin. Panto has many conventions, some of which have changed over the years, and certainly none are obligatory: the leading male juvenile character – tradition-

ally played by a young woman, though her female charms remain evident – and an older woman, known as the pantomime dame (and often the hero’s mother), – usually played by a man in drag, and has a great deal of interaction with the audience. The slapstick comedy comes with much risque double entendre, where innuendo is brought forth in perfectly inno-

cent phrases. This is, in theory, over the heads of children in the audience and for the entertainment of the adults. Meanwhile, audience participation is expected and encouraged. Calls of “Look behind you!” and “Oh, yes it is!” and “Oh, no it isn’t!” are shouted from the audience, plus they’re encouraged to “Boo!” and cheer when shown raised placards at the foot of
the stage. As well, the poor victims (such as the rejected dame, who’s usually enamoured with a prince or wellto-do villain) receive “Awwwwwww”s from the audience. A delicate item which the audience might not be aware of is the importance of having the good fairy enter from stage right (from the audience’s point of view this is on the left) and the villain enter from stage left (right, from the point of view of the audience). This convention goes back to medieval mystery plays, where the right side of the stage symbolized heaven and the left side symbolized hell. So, who will Aladdin be? Find out at the Tidemark Theatre Dec. 28-30 at 7:30 p.m. or Dec. 31 at the 2 p.m. matinee. Tickets are now on sale at the Tidemark box office, or online at tidemarktheatre.com, or by phoning 250-287-PINK. And they’re a great Christmas gift. So, make Rivercity Players Christmas pantomime part of your holiday tradition.

Celebrate a Celtic-themed Christmas
The Campbell River Singers look to Ireland and Wales for their Celtic inspired Christmas Concert. It promises to be a wonderful evening of Christmas song and dance with their special guests, Tara School of Irish Dancing under the direction of Margaret Mullen. This year, Conductor John Montgomery and Assistant Conductor Shelley Roberts, along with the 77 voice choir, will be bringing joyful Christmas music to the Tidemark Theatre on Saturday evening Dec. 7. Along with the rhythmic Celtic themed carols, the Singers will be performing familiar Christmas medleys, some gospel and blues numbers, some traditional seasonal songs with a bit of a twist, and for you sports fans
out there…something unexpected. The Campbell River Singers Concert, a Campbell River tradition, is their way of bringing the warmth and joy of the Christmas Season to everyone. This year they are also honouring the memory of long-time choir members Ellen Nutting, and Shelley Rooney who are now singing with the angels. The choir will be performing one of Ellen’s favourite pieces, Gentle Voice, and dedicating it to her memory. For an evening that is sure to warm your heart and to usher in the Christmas Season, bring family and friends to A Christmas Celebration on Saturday Dec. 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the Tidemark Theatre Tickets available at the Tidemark (287-PINK).

Moderate growth characterizes November market Sales activity across the Vancouver Island housing market area was relatively stable for the month of November, dipping only slightly from this time last year, according to the Vancouver Island Real Estate Board (VIREB). Although there has been a minimal decline in activity, the Board remains on-target to reach its forecasted growth for this year, as a result of a strong summer and fall marketplace. VIREB reports a total of 288 single-family homes sold in the VIREB coverage area on the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) in November 2013. This signifies a one per cent increase compared to the 286 sales recorded in November 2012, and a 17.7 per cent drop from
this time last month. According to BCREA’s chief economist, Cameron Muir, the dip in sales activity this month is nothing to be concerned about. “Every market in BC has shown a retrenchment in demand this November, which could be attributed to flat employment levels and slow economic growth,” he stated. On Nov. 1, VIREB adopted the MLS Home Price Index (MLS HPI) as a new method of reporting price trends in the market. The MLS HPI determines the value for a typical “benchmark” home, which is a notional dwelling that shares a specific set of qualitative and quantitative attributes. Benchmark prices tend
to be slightly lower than corresponding medians and averages, as the MLS HPI estimates the change in value of a typical benchmark home. The benchmark price for a single-family home in the Campbell River area was $268,900, up 6.9 per cent over last year; in the Comox Valley the benchmark price was $311,700, down 1.3 per cent over last year; Duncan reports a benchmark price of $279,100, dropping 1.6 per cent from last year; Nanaimo’s benchmark price was $325,600, down one per cent from last year; Parksville/Qualicum has a benchmark price of $349,200, up two per cent over last year; and Port Alberni is listed at $185,400 for a benchmark home, up 3.6 per cent over last year.

MANAGING YOUR MONEY managing to your money Pay attention your Beacon 4x10
Chris Nagle
B.Comm, MBA Division Director
It’s Christmas time – and shopping time – once again. But before you head out on what is the most expensive shopping expedition of the year for most people – and potentially harm your creditworthiness – it might be a very good idea to take a critical look at your Beacon Score. A Beacon Score results from a set of complex algorithms used to establish a person’s credit rating. It takes into account your payment history, current debt load, and number of new credit applications. Final calculations range from 300 to 900 and tell a financial institution how likely it is that a customer will repay the loan within 24 months. Beacon Scores are typically used by lenders to determine the level of interest to charge a borrower and, in the case of very low scores, whether to extend a loan at all. Most lending institutions use credit scores from Equifax Credit Bureau or Transunion. These credit
bureaus assess five areas of your personal finance, with each given a different weighting: • Past Payment History (weighting: approximately 35%) – a calculation that considers bankruptcies, late payments, past due accounts, and wage attachments. • Credit Owing (weighting: approximately 30%) – an amount that looks at how much you owe as a proportion of total credit limits. • Length of Time to Establish Credit (weighting: approximately 15%) – how much time has elapsed since your accounts have been open and active. • New Credit (weighting: approximately 10%) – a calculation of recent credit inquiries and recentlyopened accounts. • Type of Credit (weighting: approximately 10%) – assesses the different types of credit used, such as credit cards, retail accounts, mortgage, and line of credit. According to Canadian Mortgage Trends, the average Canadian adult’s Beacon Score is around 700. A score of 750 or
higher puts you in a great position to receive extended credit but if you’re on the low end and hoping to get a mortgage or a large loan for some other reason, you may be able to improve your Beacon Score by: • Establishing a credit history as soon as possible – lenders like to see a payment history of at least two years on at least two accounts, such as a car loan and a credit card. • Make all your payments on time – the cleaner your credit history, the better your chances of being approved. It’s good to know how lenders use your Beacon Score – but it’s even better to know your score is good because your financial life is in order and on track. Watch for the Carihi Mirror bi-weekly feature this Friday, December 6th I remember at bedtime my Dad and I used to read Charlotte’s Web, The Wind in the Willows, Watership Down—anything with talking animals. That’s what really struck my interest in reading and writing. It wasn’t until I was 12 and started reading Mark Twain that I became excited about Greta Hamilton journalism too. Since then I’ve been engulfed in the idea of sharing my own and the publics’ opinions and ideas. Within the community, I’m on the Rotary interact team, as well as the Youth Action Committee, a local student council. A year ago, I traveled to Ottawa to study journalism, broadcasting, and the media medium. At school, I started a newspaper club and now, writing for the Mirror, I seem to have found a sustainable outlet. Outside of writing I also participate on the Carihi improvisation teams, I play various roles intermittently through the acting department and I am a fan of independent media, vintage paraphernalia, and visual arts.
Even as a young child, Larissa Melville was always getting her hands dirty. All around her, there were things she didn’t understand and a natural curiosity had been sparked by it. The need to be out exploring was a priority, and with paper and pencil in hand, she poured thoughts into words. Writing had been Larissa Melville a way to share her visions with others, and as Larissa grew, she continued to cherish the skill and refine her works. Living and being raised in Campbell River had been a great experience, even if she hadn’t known it then. Her past year spent at Carihi Secondary was eye-opening, and now she plans to return what she learned to those who are curious about what’s happening at the high school. Where do the opinions of our generations’ teens lie? Read to find out.

Storm right winger Gage Colpron is thwarted by a Peninsula Panthers’ sprawling stick check.
Fight night Campbell River’s Oren Hanscomb will be looking for his seventh win in the cage this Saturday night in Coquitlam. The ultimate fighter will be looking to improve on his 6-3 overall record when he takes on Cleve Bentley of Kelowna. The two are fighting in the featherweight division of the Battlefield Fight League (BFL). BFL 26 will take place at the new Hard Rock Casino. At BFL 25 in Vancouver last September, Hanscomb took on Andre Da Silva for the featherweight title, but lost a unanimous decision. Check out the promo for Saturday’s fight at www.youtube.com/ watch?v=RBLDaySWRJk
CRCS girls reach best-ever provincial result CRCS senior girls volleyball team placed ninth out of 16 teams at provincials this past weekend (best team placing ever for a CRCS team). The Cougars were also named the most sportsmanlike team of the tourney with Kaitlyn Falk being named a second team all-star. CRCS placed third in their pool after losing to Langley Christian and Cedars Christian who later were fourth and third overall. They beat A.L. Fortune which crossed them over to play a second place team – Carver Christian. Whom they took to five sets (best of 5), but lost in the fifth set 15-9. CRC then beat Vernon Christian two straight in a best of three and Bulkley Valley Christian two straight, earning them the right to play in the B-side final against Mulgrave. They beat Mulgrave in three with the last set being 17-15 capping off an amazing season.
An extended injury break in the third period appeared to rattle the Peninsula Panthers in their Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League tilt against the Campbell River Storm Sunday. Although being outshot 33-18, the Panthers were holding the Storm to a 0-0 tie going into the middle of the third period when the Panthers’ defenseman Brett Sjerven was injured after being taken into the boards. Both teams went to the dressing room while paramedics tended to the injured player and took him off the ice in a gurney. Coming back to finish out the game, the Storm scored three unanswered goals, two from the game’s first star Braydon Horcoff and one from Brendan deVries. The Storm’s Jack Surgenor was the game’s third star. Stephen Heslop of the Panthers was the second star. Shots on goal ended up being 57-27 in favour of the Storm. Panthers’ coach Brian Passmore said, “Brett is doing good and has severe pain in his upper neck, he was able to walk out of hospital after several hours of tests. It was a scary hockey play and both teams were very concerned for Brett. “The medical staff from both teams should be commended for how swiftly they handled the situation. Brett Sjerven is out indefinitely for at least 2-3 weeks. “It was tough to keep the team focused during the break as they of course were more concerned about their teamContinued on Pg. 30

Atom A Tyees take their act on the road for a pair of hard fought matches down-Island The Campbell River REHN Enterprises Atom A Tyees packed their workboots and road black with orange and white trim jerseys and headed south for a couple of games last weekend. They started off on
Saturday in Port Alberni against the Bulldogs with a 2 -1 loss where they battled hard and badly outshot their opponents, but ran into a hot Bulldog goalie who stopped just about everything the Tyees could throw at him. Campbell River
found themselves down 2-0 when a couple of bad decisions ended up with the puck behind goalie Marcus Shankar against the flow of play. The lone Tyee tally came when Evan Billard fought off a check at Port Alberni’s blueline and fed the
puck to Jacob Thomas who scored on a high, hard wrist shot. Sunday saw the Tyees in Oceanside for a Tier 1 division game against the Generals. The hard fought, back and forth game ended in a 5-5 tie. Once again, Campbell
River found themselves down 2-0 early, but Nolan Wyatt stripped an Oceanside defender of the puck and fed a wide open Alex Movold who cut the lead to 2-1. Oceanside replied to make it 3-1, but the Tyees refused to give up.
Wyatt Dumont found Alex Movold skating down the right side with a beautiful cross ice pass. Movold went in 2-on-1 with Bryce Idiens and scored with a low wrister between the goalie’s legs. Brian Majic walked in and fired a shot over the TELUS STORE OR AUTHORIZED DEALER

goalie’s shoulder. Tyees goaltender Josh Doherty did his part by stopping a couple of odd man rushes with the Generals crashing his net to keep the game tied 3-3. The Tyees went up 4-3 when Idiens scored into the top right corner after getting a pass from Movold and driving hard to the outside around the lone defender. After Oceanside tied the game on a powerplay goal, Majic scored his second of the game.

mate at that time. I told the team that Brett was in good hands and we will try to finish the game with Brett in our minds. We were already playing the game short staffed with several injuries adding up over the past two weeks. Coming back out to play with four defence caught up to us in the end. When Campbell River scored the first goal with just under four minutes remaining it was a big blow that we were unable to recover from. “Credit goes to Campbell River for earning a great hard fought win and they never stopped coming at us all night. As soon as the final buzzer went we packed up as soon as possible and headed down to the hospital to see how our fellow teammate was doing. “We are all happy Brett Sjerven is okay.” The victory ties the storm with Nanaimo for first place in the Northern Division with 36 points. Second place is held by Comox with 35 points. Oceanside occupies the basement with eight points. Victoria continues to lead the league in points with 42 and first place in the Southern Division. Sunday’s win came after a 4-3 overtime loss to the Saanich Braves on the road Friday night. The Storm got goals from deVries, Dom Kolbeins and Brayden Taekema who tied the game at 15:51 of the third to send it into overtime. Despite outshooting the Braves 61-38, the Storm couldn’t seem to make the three stars list with all three positions going to Braves players.
