Burns Lake’s Klaus Posselt, owner of Tahtsa Timber and long-time forestry entrepreneur, has purchased industrial property in Houston and will be opening a small mill there, pos-

sibly by next summer. The Houston site was formerly a specialty wood operation with several buildings and a bandsaw still in place. Those existing facilities will be supplemented by a sawmill being imported from the U.S., and possibly by relocating an under-utilized building from Burns Lake to Houston. The new mill will employ up to twelve workers and employ another 24 people in the forest either harvesting or hauling logs. The Houston mill will be the third mill he owns, adding to the small Burns Lake Mill in the Burns Lake industrial park and the Sheraton Mill near town which he purchased from the Burns Lake Community Forest last year. The Houston property - something Posselt has had his eye on for 15 years - has significant advantages over other property available to him. Besides appropriate zoning, the

Houston property has rail and highway access and most importantly, it has offhighway access.

The advantages of the Houston site do not mean Posselt’s Burns Lake sawmills will be closed. “I’ve put significant money into Sheraton, and we still have plans to upgrade the Burns Lake mill,” Posselt said. “We fully intend to keep the Sheraton and Burns Lake mills running. Each mill has its own focus. The Burns Lake mill will do most of the stuff for the oil patch, Sheraton will do over-size product, and the Houston

but Posselt has never been interested in exporting logs. “Almost every Chinese buyer that comes along wants to export logs,” Posselt said. “On this side of the Coast mountains, there’s not much margin in it. But even if there was some margin, I would want to process the logs here. I’m not interested in exporting logs.” Posselt’s export operation produces cant - basically a squared log - for shipment. The buyer can complete the milling to whatever dimension desired, or use the cant cuts in industrial and road building operations. The residual wood

that Posselt harvests is good for milling cant thanks to its lighter, dry weight. It doesn’t have the higher market value of green wood, but it has its place. “For some of the stuff we make, lowgrade wood is actually a benefit,” he explained. “It resists twisting and it’s not expensive to transport.” Focussing on socalled low-grade wood has been Posselt’s niche in the region. The large forest license holders are not interested in salvaging low-grade wood, and much of it would have been burnt in the forest as waste. “Up to three-quarters of what we run in these mills [Sheraton and Burns Lake] is material the big mills were burning in the bush,” Posselt said. “This is one of the most satisfying things I’ve done in my life, taking something that was going to go to waste or just getting burnt and making something of value.”

ats off to the provincial legislature’s finance committee for putting on paper an issue that’s been on the minds of many northwesterners. And that’s asking the provincial government to consider establishing a common liquefied natural gas (LNG) energy corridor. Think of this corridor as being a highway with pipelines branching off to separate LNG plants as needed and you get the idea. As Skeena NDP MLA Robin Austin points out, it would save companies time and money from having to have separate routes surveyed and approved and ease overall environmental impacts. Still, it’s an idea worth exploring and a response from the province is awaited.

Osmachenko, celebrated her 101st birthday on November 24, cheering for her favourite team in the Canadian Football League’s season finale game. The fact that her team, the Saskatchewan Roughriders, played against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in her own province was an added bonus. But the real icing on the cake was that the Grey Cup celebrated its 101st birthday on the exact same day she did. “Woohoo!” she exclaimed excitedly two days before the game. “I bet they win!” Vickie Oomen, the activity director of Eatonia Oasis Living, where Alice is a resident, hoped they would win as well. Excited about going to the game herself, it was she who noticed that Alice’s birthday

celebration would, coincidentally, fall on the same day. Wanting to send a picture of her to the local newspaper, the staff at the personal care home hung up a Roughriders banner behind Alice, dressed her up in one of the team’s green jerseys along with a giant fingered fan glove, and gave her a football to hold. “You’re making me look like a fool,” Alice griped. “But I love it!” The spunky centenarian has been a long-time Roughriders fan, and has lived most of her life in the team’s province of Saskatchewan. She wasn’t born there, though. Her first two weeks were spent in pre-revolution Russia, until her family fled to Canada for the government offering of uncultivated farmland to immigrants. Her parents raised her and her six siblings in

a mud house in Biggar, Saskatchewan, where they worked the land for grain. “We were so poor we didn’t have a broom,” she said. “My mom made one out of twigs and we’d sprinkle water over the floors and use that.” Full of stories and happy to share with anyone interested in hearing them, Alice talked about the scarce food supply during the Great Depression, and how she and her brothers and sisters would hunt for birds. “Don’t ever try the pigeon,” she advised. “Yuck.” Born Alexandria Evanoff, Alice is more like a mother than a grandmother to my stepmom, Kym White. “My mother abandoned me and my three siblings when I was four,” she said. “Gramma stopped her life to come out to Edmonton and raise us while our dad worked in the oil field.”

Kym’s father, Donald was Alice’s only child. He died 31 years ago, the day after his 46th birthday. It was a heartbreaking loss for his children and his new wife who was expecting his 6th child, and it completely devastated Alice. “Parents should never outlive their kids,” Kym said. “She’s gone through so much in her 101 years, but losing him was the greatest tragedy of her life. She still misses him every day.” Determined to be there for her family, Kym said her grandmother put everyone else’s needs ahead of her own, and part of that was teaching them that whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, to love and live life to the fullest, and to be honest. Described by the staff at her home as “popular, funny and full of stories,” Alice

On a brighter note Lori Welbourne was quick to add “but not full of lies!” She was clearly not lying when she said she was looking forward to the Grey Cup and would be rooting for her team. She was also tickled over the media attention she received days before the event. “I’m getting famous,” she had said with a laugh. The Saskatchewan Roughriders won the big game on Sunday and Alice was thrilled. “Now they can relax and enjoy the fruits of their labour for awhile,” she said. “Just like me.”

Hydro rates going up 28% over five years The first of a series of BC Hydro rate increases takes effect in April 2014, adding $8 a month to the average residential power bill. Rate increases of nine per cent next year and six per cent in 2015 are the highest of a series of increases over five years announced Monday by Energy Minister Bill Bennett. The B.C. Utilities Commission will be directed to set rate increases that total up to 28 per cent over the next five years,

then determine what rates are needed for the following five years, Bennett said. Commercial rates are going up the same amount. B e n n e t t acknowledged that rate increases are being kept low by using a “rate smoothing” account that defers more than $1 billion of the utility’s debt. That account won’t begin to be paid down until after 2020. BC Hydro CEO Charles Reid said the latest rate increases are driven mainly by a large

increase in capital spending, including seismic refits of old dams at Campbell River and Ruskin, turbine expansions at two Kootenay power dams and other upgrades. BC Hydro’s “big build” era of 1973 to 1982 produced rate increases totalling 113 per cent. BC Hydro cited an annual survey by Hydro Quebec that shows BC Hydro customers currently pay the third lowest rates in North America. Montreal and Winnipeg customers pay less,

The Buck Flats Community Development Society is raising funds to survey donated land for a Buck Flats volunteer fire hall. Society President Chris Newell said Andy Pollock, a Buck Flats resident, donated two acres of land for the fire hall, and they’re working to get a property survey done to parcel off the land. “The reason we need a fire hall is that we want to be able to provide fire protection throughout the winter,” said Newell. “With freezing conditions, you can’t really store a fire truck outside, so that’s the big reason we want a fire hall.”

The society is fund raising for the property survey, upwards of $5,000, he said. Newell says the Buck Flats Community Development Society has over 30 members and four recently elected officials: Chris Newell is President, Andy Horsefield is Vice President, Rose Grelson is Treasurer, and Alexander Walsh is Secretary. So far they’ve done wreaths for the Serendipity Sale last Saturday, and they’ve been looking into other funding agencies. “Everyone is really into it. We’ve had offers for donations and we’re going to be pursuing that. We’ll be working hard on our own as well to make that happen,” Newell said.

A B.C. Senator and MP are calling for the first Saturday in June to be proclaimed National Health and Fitness Day, to help reverse what they call an “epidemic of obesity” among young people. Senator Nancy Greene Raine introduced a bill in response to statistics that show one out of three Canadian children are overweight or obese, and only 12 per cent get enough physical activity. Canada’s Public Health Agency calculates that health care for obesity-related cardiovascular and diabetes treatment already costs $7 billion a year. The bill encourages local governments and private organizations to hold community events to promote fitness. West Vancouver-

C h i n e s e petrochemical giant Sinopec, another Japanese player and an unidentified Indian company are joining the international move to explore liquefied natural gas exports from northern B.C., says Rich Coleman, B.C.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s minister for natural gas development. Sinopec, ranked the fifth largest global company in 2011, is looking for LNG imports equivalent to the output of the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s second largest LNG terminal, Coleman told reporters as Premier Christy Clark began a trade trip to Asia. Another new player is Idemitsu Kosan Co., the second largest petroleum refiner in Japan, which is applying for a federal export permit in a partnership

with Calgary-based AltaGas called Triton LNG. China National Overseas Oil Company and its new subsidiary Nexen has put up a nonrefundable deposit of $12 million toward purchase of provincial land on the north side of Grassy Point near Prince Rupert, Coleman said. Another unidentified company has shown interest in the south side of Grassy Point. The new proposals add to a lineup of international investment proposed by Petronas, Chevron, Shell, British Gas and others, which are expected to make final investment decisions in 2014. Coleman said the tax rate for LNG producers is to be presented to companies by the end of November, but it may not be public until the B.C. government table its budget in February.

Law planned to freeze MLA seats By Tom Fletcher Black Press

The B.C. government is accepting public comments until Jan. 15 on a proposed bill to restrict the number of MLAs to the current level of 85, and to maintain the current rural and northern seats regardless of population. Current law requires an independent Electoral Boundaries Commission to be appointed in May 2014 to consider changes. The government discussion paper is posted online at h t t p : / / w w w. ag . g ov. bc.ca/legislation/ebca/ index.htm. The last review in 2008 recommended that an urban population shift should result in a

reduction of one seat in the CaribooThompson region and one in northern B.C. The government intervened keep those seats and increase the total constituencies from 83 to 85. The B.C. Liberals and NDP agreed that northern constituencies could not get any larger and still be represented by a single MLA. The 2008 review, chaired by B.C. Supreme Court Justice Bruce Cohen, added seats in the Okanagan, Fraser Valley, Surrey, Burnaby-Tri-Cities and downtown Vancouver. It concluded that keeping all the rural seats was not consistent with the principle of representation by population.

Rose says they working to find and arrest the male. *** Police stopped an impaired driver on Butler Avenue at 6:20 p.m. Nov. 21. Sgt. Rose said police demanded a roadside screen and issued a warning and a three-day roadside prohibition, and impounded the vehicle for seven days. *** Police and the Fire Department got report of a fire in a home in Topley at 8:10 p.m. Nov. 21. Sgt. Rose said the Topley Fire Department put out the chimney fire and no one was injured. *** Police are seeking an arrest warrant for a female who failed to be home on court curfew Nov. 21, Sgt. Rose said. *** Police were confronted with a man with an armed male at a home at 12 a.m. Nov. 22. Sgt. Northwestern energy corridor proposed for pipelines

Skeena NDP MLA Robin Austin backs the idea of a common energy corridor for natural gas pipelines but thinks advancing the idea might be a bit early because no liquefied natural gas projects in the region have actually gotten off of the ground. “I think it makes sense for energy companies as they develop their route plans to think about ways they can work together so as not to rip up more of northern B.C. than necessary,” he said. Austin’s comment follows the release today of a provincial legislative committee report which recommends the government consider

a common energy corridor. That consideration would be included in a cumulative environmental assessment of all LNG projects, said the committee. The prospect of five or more pipelines carrying natural gas to LNG plants in Kitimat and in Prince Rupert has sparked discussion about their combined environmental and other impacts. But Austin acknowledged that the competitive nature of the LNG business would make an energy corridor difficult to organize. Still, he said companies should realize they’d save enormous amounts of

money by cooperating where possible on pipeline routes. “In Australia they’ve just finished four separate pipeline routes to projects adjacent to each other,” said Austin. “That’s jacked up the costs tremendously and I think now those companies realize it makes no sense. And some of those companies are the same as those with projects here,” he said referring to Chevron’s Kitimat LNG project and Shell Canada’s LNG project, also at Kitimat. While Austin favoured the idea of companies cooperating on routes, he drew the line on having the province

develop its own corridor and then making it available to energy companies. “I don’t want to see any energy corridor that would then allow Enbridge to run a pipeline down it,” said Austin of the controversial Northern Gateway pipeline which would transport Alberta crude to a marine export terminal at Kitimat.

The finance committee also recommended the province continue to explore revenue sharing with northern governments and that First Nations be included. “That really goes without saying. It’s a given. I think in this day and age there is no way First Nations can’t be involved,” said Austin. And he backs

another finance c o m m i t t e e recommendation to spend money now on northwestern infrastructure to ensure communities are ready for the impact of large-scale industrialization. “If you look at communities in

the northeast and Fort McMurray where industrial development happens quickly, you’ll see the impacts. Communities don’t have the ability to cope after the fact,” said Austin. “Communities get overwhelmed.” - Black Press
