Legislature dome moving, repair needed By Tom Fletcher Black Press The B.C. legislature’s signature copper-clad dome is “beginning to twist, and that’s a problem,” MLAs on the legislature management
committee were told Thursday. That’s the most dramatic symptom of deterioration in the 120-year-old structure, whose many structural problems have been put off for decades and could cost up to $70 million to repair. Legislature clerk
Craig James reviewed highlights of an updated engineering report that shows the delicacy of the task. “The problem with every part of this building is that when you go to fix one part of it, it’s attached to another part, which requires to be fixed as
well,” James said. “In fixing, for instance, the dome, it sits on these columns that are supported centrally throughout the rotunda, and we’re advised that if you fix the dome, you should really be looking at and fixing the central portion too.”

WildBC’s Luisa Richardson talks to Ecole Puntledge Park Grade 1 students during a field trip to Tsolum Spirit Park to learn about the park’s history and salmon in the Tsolum River. Photo submitted Tsolum elementary students joined the community to help build the park, and Ang still remembers painting the sign at its
entrance off Tsolum River Road. “The community got involved and the school got involved and that was a big
thing,” recalls Ang, adding the idea of encouraging kids to volunteer was a driving force behind this field trip. “We really believe
that if kids start young and start to love nature and learn about salmon then they’ll get involved more when they’re older.”

More than 20 years later, Carolyn Ang still remembers working to create Tsolum Spirit Park when she was a Grade 5 student at (the former) Tsolum Elementary School. Now a parent with a child at École Puntledge Park Elementary, she organized a field trip for Grade 1 students to learn about the history of the park, the return of salmon to the Tsolum River and the importance of volunteering in their community. “I really believe in getting involved in your community for things that are important, especially when it comes to conservation and wildlife,” says Ang. “So, I really like to instil those values into the kids and also, I believe getting a hands-on education outside is really, really important.” WildBC environmental educator Luisa Richardson, the Tsolum River Restoration Society’s Laura O’Brien and Fisheries and Oceans’ Dave Davies used hands-on learning techniques in nature to teach the students. For example, Davies demonstrated how salmon use the river to spawn with cardboard cutouts of salmon at the river. Ang says the kids enjoyed the field trip and she was surprised by the high number of parents who came out, too. Tsolum Spirit Park features trails, a bridge and a picnic site.

A guide to how we hear the things we hear You’ve done it again. You’ve done something completely ridiculous that you didn’t even realize was ridiculous until your spouse pointed it out, making you wonder how you managed to survive all those years without his or her
watchful eye. Words are spoken – sometimes heated words. Those words travel menacingly toward your ear in the form of sound waves, which are scooped up by your treasonous outer ear (or “pinna”) and ruthlessly amplified as they’re
funneled about 2.5 centimeters down your ear canal toward your eardrum. Your eardrum (or “tympanic membrane”) vibrates and transmits the sound waves to your ossicular chain, comprised of a hammer (“malleus”), anvil
(“incus”) and stirrup (“stapes”). These, the three smallest bones in your body, further amplify the sound and transmit it to the cochlea – a pea-sized, fluid-filled cavity in your inner ear. The cochlea is where the magic happens. Nestled
within its fluid are about 15,000 microscopic hair cells, each tuned to a different frequency. (In Canadians, a full 78% are specifically tuned to

conversations about hockey and the weather.) These hair cells are connected to the cochlea nerve, which sends your spouse’s colourful adjectives

Sawmill inspections continue. WorkSafeBC Prevention staff have been working with industry, other provincial regulators, and stakeholders to ensure that BC sawmills and other businesses that deal with wood dust are, and continue to be, in compliance with safety requirements. Directive order, follow-up inspections and industry action
targeted inspections of other wood products manufacturing industries, including pellet plants, and plywood and pulp and paper mills. We

Ongoing and sustainable compliance
inspected every sawmill in the province for compliance with that order. A CEO-led sawmill taskforce and industry advisory group developed safety resources to distribute to industry, including best practice guidelines and an audit tool for dust-control management. Three new occupational health and safety guidelines related to wood dust were published, along with two hazard alerts to address risks specifically related to wood dust. Our officers re-inspected all sawmills to evaluate the industry’s efforts to manage combustible dust.
Scope expanded to include wood processing operations
In 2013 and going forward, our officers will continue to address combustible dust as a regular part of their inspectional activity. This winter, a dedicated team of officers will re-inspect sawmills throughout the province. The sawmill industry has made significant progress in addressing dust management. We want to ensure that progress and compliance with wood-dust management requirements is being sustained. Safety in BC sawmills is a vitally important issue, firstly to those who work in the industry, and also to their families and communities. Our common goal is to make wood-dust management an integral part of manufacturing operations. We will continue to work proactively with businesses around the province to make safety

to be interpreted – and, in the case of most relationships, subsequently ignored – by your brain. And that’s how you hear. Though I may be biased, I firmly believe hearing is the most amazing of our five senses. The smallest perceptible sound moves your eardrum only four atomic diameters; the loudest is a trillion times more powerful. If your eyesight had the same range, on a dark night you’d be able to see a candle flickering 48 trillion kilometres away! What’s the takeaway? Effective communication depends on your hearing. And while perfect hearing doesn’t guarantee you’ll be a good listener, I can guarantee you won’t be if your hearing is compromised. TimberWest donation advances Mt. Fishing Washington Ski Patrol training fishing corner Corner A record number of first year applicants and the rest of the volunteers of the Mt Washington Ski Patrol Association completed another successful training weekend at the end of October. With a $1,000 donation, TimberWest supported this critical training activity. Sue Handel, Communications Manager at TimberWest noted that “TimberWest is pleased to be able to provide our support to the volunteer ski patrollers who help
make Mt Washington a safe and enjoyable ski destination.” The Mt Washington Ski Patrol Association is an independent nonprofit organization that has 148 volunteer members who work in close coordination with the paid ski patrol at Mt Washington Alpine Resort. The association is funded through member dues and donations. “The donation by TimberWest was greatly appreciated,” noted MWSPA Vice-

MWSPA received 79 applications for the volunteer patrol this year and the 56 trainees was a record number for the patrol, twelve more than the previous record last season. These trainees
joined 52 returning patrollers and 40 trainers to refresh their first aid skills as they prepared for the upcoming season. The volunteers of the Mt Washington Ski Patrol Association hold a wide range of first aid and medical training. Most volunteers hold Occupational Level 3 or Outdoor Emergency Care certifications but the patrol includes members with Primary Care Paramedic and Emergency Medical Responder certifications as well

to the south and the Gold,Oyster,Quinsam and Salmon rivers in the north. The Campbell river is fishable for trout and steelhead. Drift fishing with long rods and spinning gear is the preferred method of fishing for the steelhead and Pink rubber worms and Jensen eggs work well. On the fly large flies that are colorful can attract fish and black flies can be productive. Winter springs are being caught at the Hump, Lighthouse and at Shelter Point. This time of year getting on the water can be a challenge, those getting out are using small Tomic plugs, Gypsy or Coyote spoons. Fishing for a Christmas salmon has always been popular and boats trolling Willow Point are trolling for a winter spring. Trout fishing has been good on big lakes using powerbaits, always check for regulations before heading out to many local fishing hotspots.
