School reconfiguration preparation

The need for speed

The school district of Vanderhoof is working hard to get NVSS ready for the influx of young grade seven students to come there now that Prairiedale Elementary will be closed and the schools rearranged. There are changes to be made physically to the building and ideas to change teaching habits to fit a younger group in a high school environment. Some of these ideas came from psychologist and speaker Nancy Doda who was in Vanderhoof last week to hold a parent information session as well as a workshop for teachers on the professional development day. “The reason that we asked Nancy Doda to come is primarily the reconfiguration process which will bring grade sevens to the high school,” said Manu Madhok, Director of Instruction for School District 91. “She’s a developmental psychologist who specializes in the learning needs of middle year students. We found her while we were doing research and saw this video of Nancy talking to a group of principals.” “She’s an academic and she works in that academic circle,” said Madhok. “But she’s also a teacher first and that resonates with teachers. She told them stories and you could tell that when she’s speaking, she speaks like a teacher.” “We knew that we needed to do something a little bit differently than just saying to grade sevens ‘welcome to the high school, good luck, here’s your eight block schedule, stay out of the corners and watch for the kids with moustaches’” said Madhok. “We needed to do a bit of research into what had worked in other jurisdictions and didn’t work.” Parents of grade seven students wanted to know about the safety of their child who might only be 12 or 13 years old and they want to know there’s going to be a safe spot for their kids. Approximately 90 grade seven students will be coming to NVSS. “So we wanted to create a footprint in the building for them, that wasn’t walled off and made into a school within a school, but a zone designated for grade sevens,” Madhok said. “So there’s a spot on the second floor that has been designated for the

“We needed to do a bit of research into what had worked in other jurisdictions and didn’t work.” - Manu Madhok grade sevens.” This spot will be made to look a little different from the rest of the school, since it is being designed with younger children in mind. “We’re trying to incorporate some of the hallway space as classroom space,” said Eugene Marks, Director of Instruction for SD91. “We’ve got some areas where we are going to change where the walls are, increase the size of the learning space. We’re going to try and connect individual classrooms so it isn’t just teachers teaching in isolation but teachers working with 60 kids or 50 kids instead of one teacher with 25 students.” Parents have already been shown, at meetings, preliminary drawings of what the space could look like. Marks said that students at a grade seven level are closer to grade eights than they are to grade sixes in their learning ability. The new students won’t be ready to see a handful of instructors each day like their older counterparts but they will be ready to see maybe two teachers each day. And that’s what the new learning space is going to be capable of providing. “When more teachers are putting their heads together, it’s better for kids,” said Madhok. “We really are trying to prevent the sort of spaces where a single teacher will walk in their class, close their door and then try and teach a group of 25 students in isolation.” Madhok said that the school district can’t really place a timeline on this project but they know it will be functional by the time the kids arrive there but whether it will be totally finished is something they can’t predict yet.

CHRISTMAS TEA & BAZAAR... Saturday, December 7, 11-3pm at the Evelyn Hall, Burrard Street. Everyone welcome.

Closure for Prairiedale Sam Redding Omineca Express Prairiedale is closing and Sinkut View, a grade four to seven school, is now going to become a K to grade six school and some changes will need to be made to accomodate the students. “Priority enrollment at Sinkut View will first be those that live within the catchment area,” said Manu Madhok, Director of Instruction. “The grade fives and sixes next year, it wasn’t fair to them to transition back to Evelyn Dickson or McLeod and then do another transition to the high school.” They have protected the seats of this year’s grade fours and fives, for Sinkut View next year. Just so that they don’t have to move schools before they get to NVSS. “When we looked closer at that group of fives and sixes, they have siblings in Sinkut View,” said Madhok. “So wherever we could we wanted to protect the siblings of those in grade five and six. And then after that, if there were seats still available, they will open to out of catchment area families. The lottery process for wherever seats are available will occur on January 21. Every current family at Prairiedale and Sinkut View is going to receive a letter that personalizes what their children and the age group that they’re in and what choices they have. “Hopefully doing the lottery early in the year gives families the time they need to make decisions,” said Eugene Marks, Director of Instruction at SD91. “We’re also looking at the Sinkut View SENIORS CONNECTED... is looking for Seniors in need of Outreach & Transportation. building to see if there are changes that we need to make because we are adding the K to threes.” These changes could include lowering shelves and coat racks to accommodate the younger students. The library will also be updated to include books for the primary grades. Both schools have undergone serious changes in the past. Prairiedale and Sinkut View were both K to grade six schools in the past so the recent changes are another step that Vanderhoof’s evolution in education. Neither Madhok nor Marks could comment on what is going to happen to the Prairiedale building in the future.

Sam Redding Omineca Express For the second time this year, vandals have struck the Nechako Valley Sporting Association grounds. In the summer some people decided to tear off, bend or destroy all 18 of the trail signs on the grounds. They then took the time to gather them all up and stack them in front of the main building. This caused about $2,500 worth of damage and a

lot of time and effort to replace them all. This time, the vandals managed to enter the main building itself and wreak as much damage as they could. “They took the ice blocks out of the fridge and threw them on the floor,” said Gerd Erasmus, who trains biathlon students on the NVSA grounds. “The floor tiles were lifted and warped and it damaged the sub-floor beneath.” They rummaged around in all the cupboards and tried to break into one of the locked ones but only

Tl’azt’en and Binche move forward Tl’azt’en Nation has agreed to continue to work towards the separation of Binche from the Tl’azt’en Nation. The Tl’azt’en Band chief and council sent a letter to The Courier saying they have agreed to move forward with the process of separation and continue to negotiate with the Binche Separation Committee. Josh Hallman, Tl’azt’en councillor and chair of the Binche Separation Committee confirmed he has had positive meetings with the band council and is encouraged they are willing to continue to move the process along. While Hallman had previously been protesting the lack of progress by not attending council meetings, he said he has once again begun to work with Tl’azt’en. Tl’azt’en said in their letter they are planning on moving forward with the negotiated terms of separation and have given a deadline of March 31, 2014. “Tl’azt’en Nation supports Binche in their separation and are committed to further discussions regarding the separation process and negotiations,” said the letter. Tl’azt’en was also holding elections this week, with voting to take place on Nov. 29. Look for election results soon.

managed to break the lock a little. They also stole the fire extinguisher and left it in a garbage can outside mysteriously empty. One of the more dangerous parts of their wanton destruction was that they unplugged the cooling fan on the snowmobiles parked outside as well as loosening the bolts on the clutch pulley and stealing the $600 winch and a toolkit. Erasmus said that the snowmobile damage wasn’t seriously dangerous but if someone had tried to fire them up one of the pieces could have gone flying in any direction. Everybody Loses

Bricks and Pye Sam Redding Omineca Express Anna Pye, a teacher at NVSS and organizer for the We Day students, is fundraising to build a school in Kenya and will be taking a small group of kids there in August 2014. “The kids are doing presentations at the elementary schools about the bricks,” said Pye. “We’re encouraging them to help us in our effort and we realized later if each student, we have 500 students, raised $20 we’d have enough for a school. Which made it seem reachable.” “The bricks are $20 a brick and 500 makes a school so our goal is to make $10,000 to build a school,” said Jade-Lynn Tibbo, one of Pye’s students. They had a bake sale last week and managed to sell 10 bricks, Pye wasn’t sure if 500 bricks really built a school or if the goal for the program was to just raise a set $10,000 to build a school. Approximately 57 million primary school-aged children are not in school and 31 million of those are girls according to Pye. The Kenya trip is separate and it is through the program Free the Children. It will be similar to the Ecuador trip that some students took in early 2013. “We go for about 12 days to the one side of Nairobi, and help with the school project, help with the water project or help with a garden. We also do a water walk with the mothers, and learn how far they have to walk every day to get water.” This has already inspired the students to come up with a water walk of their own which will be in May 2014. It will be part of a fundraiser for clean water and building a school. “This is a leadership social justice training trip that involves a lot of hard work, dedication and a

vision to be the change,” said Pye. “Students have been very busy fundraising and are very thankful for the opportunities provided by community businesses.” The students will be selling bricks in front of Earthen Ware from 7-8 p.m. on December 6 during Midnight Madness and Parade of Lights.

NeighbourLink offers an environment of warmth and support from their facilities on Stewart Street, especially for mothers. Twice weekly, a group of about 15 mothers gathers with their kids to learn crafts, sew, play, eat and share with each other. But they need help funding the program and NeighbourLink President, Henry Bucher, would like to ask the community for its support. “Single moms face multiple challenges, literacy and the whole nine yards,” said Bucher. “Our philosophy, our modus operandi, is to get the child ready for Kindergarten.” NeighbourLink is there to help parents dealing with difficult life situations get their kids ready to learn. “The goal is to try and help them get ready through the mom,” said Bucher. “Even the most challenged mom, when supported, is still the best person to nurture the child to maturity. We’re trying to support the moms, build self confidence, self-esteem and sometimes that gets to them directly or indirectly. But that costs money.” Bucher said that NeighbourLink never asks for help unless they really need it. They receive about $30,000 from the Act II Thrift Store each year but the mother’s service, supported through independent grants, is in need of more funding. Their annual budget is over $94,000 annually which they receive through grants, member churches, Saik’uz First Nations and private donations. “About $45,000 goes towards the mothers program,” said Bucher. “And that’s where we’re hurt-

ing. We’ve been living off of grants. We get no government funding, they know that if we don’t address the needs of youngsters, it’s going to cost them a bundle tomorrow. But they’re paying the bundles instead of paying up front.” Last Wednesday, November 27, the moms group met for their bi-weekly session. There was scrapbooking, lunch, reading and even a puppet show. They made little snowflakes and ornaments now that the holidays are so soon. Most of the kids are younger than 12, but it doesn’t matter what age they are if they want to take part in the program. People are being encouraged to donate to the program and they are welcome to come in and check out what happens each day and see what their money will provide. The best moms and dads program meets on Monday morning from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on Thursday afternoons from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Transportation is provided as long as the participants engage in the programs and request it in a reasonable amount of time. NeighbourLink also runs an emergency shelter program that ensures that no one has to sleep outside, especially in the winter. The program receives support from the RCMP and several churches for this service. NeighbourLink also provides a food bank for those that find themselves without basic nutritional needs. Bucher joked and asked that people stop bringing in so much soup but that the community has been “marvelous” with their donations.. NeighbourLink also hosts a Wednesday lunch open to the community, which the churches take turns hosting.

Vanderhoof Midget Bears win FSJ Tournament The Vanderhoof Midget Bears travelled to Fort St. James on the Nov. 23/24 weekend for a four team tournament. In their first game Saturday morning the Bears faced off against the host team, FSJ Stars. Despite the early start, Vanderhoof came out hungry and focused and prevailed 4-1. Nick Silver with a pair, Eric Silver and Connor Arnason were the goal scorers. Liam Arnason was in the Bears net. In the afternoon Vanderhoof played Smithers and came out on top 7-1. Cousins Nick and Jimmy Silver were the stars of the game accumulating six points each in the victory. Tate Page also scored for the Bears. On Sunday the Bears faced off against the Houston Flyers. The game remained scoreless until midway through the third period when the Bear’s Braden Boucher wired a slapshot past the Houston goalie for the only goal of the game. Jasper Barfoot and Caleb Miles earned assists on the winning goal. Liam Arnason tended the net again for Vanderhoof. The same two teams squared off later in the afternoon in the Championship game. After a scoreless first period the Bears struck three times in the second and went into the third period leading 3-0. Eric Silver with a pair and Jimmy Silver were the goal scorers. Houston came out on fire in the third

and struck for three quick goals to tie the game by the midway point. Houston then took the lead with just over six minutes left, and a game that after the second period saw Vanderhoof with all the momentum, now was in doubt for the local squad. The Bears, however, began to play with a sense of urgency and were rewarded when Nick Silver slammed in his own rebound to tie the game 4-4 with three and a half minutes left. The third period ended with the teams still tied, setting up a sudden death overtime period. In the overtime the teams traded chances early before the Bear’s Eric Silver scored the winner, firing a wrist shot over the outreached glove of the Houston goalie, for his third goal of the game. Vanderhoof wins the game 5-4 much to the relief and joy of the players, coaches and parents who were on the edge of their seats in the frantic final few minutes of an exciting game. Team members of the Bears are, Tate Page, Caleb Kelly, Kyrel Silva, Calvin Li, Braden Boucher, Noah Miles, Connor Arnason, Graeme Thiessen, Jimmy Silver, Caleb Miles, Nick Carter, Nick Silver, Eric Silver, Kayden Bahr, Jasper Barfoot and goaltender Liam Arnason. Greenhouse gas trial balloon leaks VICTORIA – Last week I described the inevitable demise of B.C.’s “carbon neutral government” scheme, which continues to take millions from hospitals and schools to fund greenhouse gas reduction projects of questionable value. It’s like the AirCare program, a pollution solution that sounded great at the time. AirCare soon found itself chasing diminishing environmental returns, made redundant by new vehicle technology and the financial need to save fuel. Public sector carbon offsets will suffer the same fate, growing as a political liability as their effectiveness declines. All this is separate from B.C.’s carbon tax and greenhouse gas reduction program, another environmental trial balloon that is sinking back to Earth. Former premier Gordon Campbell’s climate goals officially remain in place: 33 per cent greenhouse gas reduction by 2020 and a whopping 80 per cent by 2050. If the gas boom proceeds as planned, B.C. domestic emissions will not be down, but up substantially by 2020. New liquefied natural gas export proposals continue to pop up, the latest ones on former industrial sites near Squamish and Campbell River. And with the surge of LNG activity around Kitimat and Prince Rupert already changing the landscape, questions linger about the pollution and greenhouse gas impacts. As she left for the government’s largest ever trade mission to Asia, Premier Christy Clark dismissed a study that estimated the impact of three LNG plants. That study, done by Kitimat environment group Skeena Wild, assumed “direct drive” technology to chill and compress gas for export. It concluded that three plants would burn two and a half times the amount of natural gas currently used in Metro Vancouver. Clark and Environment Minister Mary Polak relied on the same talking point to reject the study. The technology of powering LNG is still being negotiated, as producers work towards environmental permits, so the total can’t be calculated yet. BC Hydro is predicting little electricity demand for LNG until after 2020, which suggests the early development will either be direct drive, the industry standard and simplest method, or building one or more gas-fired power plants in northwest B.C. Even if gas usage is only equivalent to one Lower Mainland, it’s plain to see greenhouse gas emissions are going up. Clark has repeatedly argued that B.C. LNG should get credit for displacing coal in China and elsewhere. I asked Polak if the international community would accept B.C.’s assertion that emissions from our LNG production shouldn’t count. “We haven’t said we won’t count them,” Polak replied. “What the premier’s talked about and I’ve talked about is that this whole issue of The Omineca Express is published every Wednesday in Vanderhoof by Black Press Ltd. how one accounts for greenhouse gases in a particular region is one that is constantly evolving. There are regularly changes to the international standards for accounting for these things and reporting them. And certainly the ability for one jurisdiction to impact positively on the GHG emissions of another, we think is appropriately considered in how one accounts for these things.” Clark visited the Jiangsu LNG import facility in China that could be a key export destination. Globe and Mail China correspondent Nathan Vanderklippe covered the premier’s visit. He reports that the gas being imported at Jiangsu isn’t replacing coal. It’s being used in addition to coal in peak demand

periods. Clark also visited Japan, another key customer for LNG. The whole world knows why Japan needs new energy sources. It needs to replace production from its disaster-tainted nuclear facilities. Will B.C. LNG be part of the solution to humaninduced climate change? On the evidence so far, the answer is no. Letters to the editor

Eternal gratitude Thank you, There are no words to express my gratitude to my fellow coworkers at the school bus garage, and others for planning and orga-

nizing the fundraiser for myself and Brian. The generous gifts from donors to be auctioned and the financial and more support were above and beyond.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts and we are forever grateful for your support. Sincerely, Brian and Mavis Snyder

Buyer beware, designate your driver carefully To Editor, In your latest Advertiser you wrote on article about the joy of having a designated driver. I am 85 years young and on Jan. 4, 2013 I had to get my eyes operated on. On Jan. 2, a good friend of mine volunteered to drive me to Prince George but the next day there was snow in the forecast and he told me, if I could find another driver, he’d rather not go. I have many good friends in Vanderhoof so I contacted someone else. This friend never hesitated a second and told me to be at his house at 9 a.m. So on Jan. 3 I bought three coffees at Tim’s and when we were drinking the coffee he pointed to a letter on the table that said “Do not go to Prince”. His wife, who was still in bed, had written this and so he refused to go. I drove to Prince George with no trouble and found my grandchildren at home. I took them out for lunch and I asked my granddaughter if she could be my designated driver. She said that would be marvelous as they were going to see my son in Vanderhoof that day. The operation would be over at 2:30 p.m. Christie, my designated driver, would pick me up and drive me to

the casino. At 3 p.m. my grandson would pick Christie up and they would be on their way to Vanderhoof. At 2 p.m. I was dropped off at the hospital and then by 2:30 I was ready to go but could not see very good as my eyes were dilated, but after two hours in the casino I would be able to drive home myself. My granddaughter came with my car to pick me up, she took off on 15th Avenue because she said she liked to go the long way to the casino. On the bypass she drove way over the speed limit and I told her three times to slow down. Then, at the last light before the casino, she failed to stop and hit a truck. Over $6,000 later and the shop had mostly fixed the car. I had to go back to Prince George 18 times for it. ICBC gave me $1,000, which was very nice of them, but I had troubles for seven months and my insurance went up because the onus is on driver not the designated driver. Be careful who your designated driver is as you can get into a lot trouble. Yours truly, T. Domhof Vanderhoof, B.C.

injury as a result of the fall and the game was called. Her injury was later confirmed to be a case of whiplash. There were only two penalties during the game, one for too many players on the ice against Fort St. James which allowed Vanderhoof to get a power play, during which they scored their second goal, and one against Vanderhoof for tripping.

CNC ponders tuition hike Prince George Free Press CNC’s Board of Governors received a notice of motion Friday from administration to increase tuition and mandatory fees in 2014/15. The increase would have to be approved by the Board and the Province, which has typically limited tuition increases to the two per cent cost of inflation. “If a standard increase is passed by the board at the January 24 meeting, it will work out to be about $5 per course,” said CNC interim president Bryn Kulmatycki.

“It’s important to note that even if the increase is approved, CNC will remain the second most affordable post-secondary institution in all of B.C.” A two per cent increase would generate about $100,000 for the college. “It certainly won’t solve our budget issues, but it will help us deal somewhat with rising costs,” Kulmatycki said.

HOLISTIC ALTERNATIVE THERAPY BY MAGDALENA SAITO

It was an unfortunate end to a good game. With two ladies hockey teams playing last Sunday in the Fort Forum Arena, there were even a few fans in the stands to watch the action. Vanderhoof came out of the gates strong, scoring one early in the first period. Fort St. James came back to tie it up with a goal by Nadine Gingrich, and Vanderhoof pulled ahead once more with their second goal by number 10 Veronic Priest. Then Fort St. James’ defensive player Mary Willick tied it back up, assisted by Trudi Saharchuk. The game was back and forth off and on, and as Fort St. James gained traction in the third they were spending more time in the Vanderhoof end but couldn’t get the puck in the net. Vanderhoof did, however, and Christa Braun knocked a third into the net for her team. Then, with only one minute to go, Vanderhoof player Sarah Fitzpatrick fell back on the ice during some action in front of the Vanderhoof net, effectively ending the game. Fitzpatrick was taken off the ice by ambulance as a precaution, to ensure there was no serious neck

Christmas is coming! During this upcoming Christmas season we need to show extra care for the environment and our community. Reducing our environmental impact can be easy. For the next few articles we’ll be talking about how we can make this holiday season greener yet still get that holiday glow. TREES Choosing a Christmas tree is one way you can make a difference. “A study as recent as 2009 (Ellipsos) concluded that a 7-foot cut tree’s impact on climate is 60 percent less than a 7-foot artificial tree used for six years). What? Real trees are better than plastic? Some people may be sensitive to the natural scent of trees (in which case one could choose pine over firs which usually carry a weaker scent). Live trees can contain hibernating insects (though they do not usually get noticed and there are less in farmed trees than backwoods trees) Real trees- come from farms not virgin forests, so they are in fat sustainably harvested- fossil fuels are used from farm to store, from store to home. If buying real trees follow your town’s holiday pick up rules (if they have them) that way trees can get chipped and reused as mulch rather than landfill filler. Fake trees - use large amounts of petroleum in the manufacturing process - if you use a fake tree for decades, you reduce the volume of fossil fuels used. If you go faux, commit and don’t change trees every few years otherwise you are using more fuel and creating more waste every year. Potted trees- require plenty of attention, and need to be kept outdoors for most of the year, moving them into a warm home is not usually healthy. Whatever you decide, think ahead to your future, and remember that your decisions will ultimately pave the road for your childrens’ children. Have questions? Looking at some gift certificates? Come visit me at the Co-op Mall in Vanderhoof Saturday November 23rd & 30th Merry Upcoming Christmas

Wonderland in Vanderhoof Sam Redding Omineca Express

Richard Wruth, director for the Vanderhoof Children's Theatre, had the premier production Alice in Wonderland opening last Thursday, November 28. The play runs about one and a half hours with an intermission and is filled with the small but confident voices found in children's theatre. It is the classic story of Alice making her way through Wonderland and meeting all of its strange inhabitants until escaping at the end. All the while children are singing and laughing and sometimes scrambling around on stage to get to their places. The children's theatre has been practicing this play since the middle of September and now they will do two weeks of plays here in Vanderhoof and two weeks in Prince George. "It went really good," said Wruth after the first performance. "It really did. I mean there were a few mistakes but if you're in the audience you would never know they were mistakes. It's a lot of work to figure out what to do with 40 children, you have to figure out who's going where and doing what," said Wruth. Adding to the confusion was the fact that everyone has a second role that they switch to every second night. So all the children can get a good role. This means that there are six Alice's, three per group. "It can get a little confusing when you have it set up like that," said Wruth. "I have to remind myself which night is which." This performance is the 32nd production for the Vanderhoof Children's Theatre since it was set up in 1999. And Wruth has been involved in over 40 productions since 1997 as an actor, director and stage manager. It was a great show on Thursday night and the

audience of parents and children found the antics of the young kids hilarious at times. The next performance of Alice in Wonderland will be on Thursday, December 5 at 7 p.m.

Invasion of a foreign species Ruth Lloyd Caledonia Courier

Fort St. James is being invaded by Eurasian Collared Doves, that is. The foreign bird, originally from Asia, first landed in North America via the Bahamas - somewhere in Florida, and the first recorded sighting of the animal was in Miami, Florida in 1982. Since then, the invader has wasted no time in making its way across the continent, with an apparent ability to adapt well to human-altered environments. Unlike other invasive species, however, so far the bird has not had any apparent impact on the native species of doves, but this will need to be watched over time to ensure there are not long-term implications of the invader. But while Canadian “snow birds” may be winging their way down to Florida via motorhomes, the Eurasian Collared Dove has been slowly winging its way north and westward over time, and appears to have managed to make it to Fort St. James. Biologist and local bird enthusiast Joanne Vinnedge said a pair of Eur-

asian Collared Doves was first spotted in 2011 at Tchentlo Lake, and successful nestlings were spotted in Fort St. James in 2012. Since then, she said she has had numerous queries from folks about these birds, which do not appear in older bird books, being relatively new to North America in general and especially the north. To get out and learn more and have a look for the rare sighting, you can join in with experienced, amateur and beginner birders for this year’s 34th Annual Fort St. James Christmas Bird Count on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014. The event begins each year at Joanne Vinnedge’s home and volunteer birders spread out in teams to record all the birds seen within a count circle, centred on the post office and cover a specific area. If this sounds like a little too much outdoor time at this particular time of year, there is also the option of doing a bird feeder count, or joining the birders for part of the day. For more information, contact Joanne Vinnedge at 996-7401. Source: Project FeederWatch Blog by The Cornell Lab of Ornithology
