‘Brooklyn’s Wish’ Keeps on Giving

Homeless to come in from the cold night Aldergrove Star

For the second straight year Aldergrove’s Wilson family have sold and delivered poinsettias to fundraise for families at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Royal Columbian Hospital. Parents Tanya and Joel Wilson, along with daughters Charlotte and Isabella, have raised $1,300 so far this Christmas season, in memory of their late daughter and sibling Brooklyn Wilson and in thanks to RCH and staff for their loving assistance to Brooklyn. The public is invited to call the RCH Foundation at 604-520-4438 and donate to Brooklyn’s Wish Fund, or visit https://www.facebook.com/#!/BrooklynsWishFund where there is a link to make on-line donations. Tax receipts will be issued by the RCH Foundation.

With temperatures expected to dip below -4 degrees this week, an extreme weather response has been called “until further notice” to shelter Langley’s homeless. Extreme weather shelter beds have been opened up for adults at the Gateway of Hope. The Aldergrove Neighborhood Services has also activated a youth weather response. Shelter beds will be made available in Aldergrove. The RCMP and community centres are all alerted and will let those in need know. The ANS will provide transportation for teens in need of shelter. The inclement weather may continue for an extended period of time, with temperatures expected to go as low as -7 degrees overnight on Thursday. If you are a youth or know of a youth who needs shelter during extreme weather, call 604-530-6477 between 7 p.m. and midnight, and transportation to the shelter will be arranged.

Crosswalk a ‘go’ for Aldergrove Secondary at 29th By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star

A community campaign for a crosswalk at Aldergrove Secondary School’s 29 Avenue entrance has paid off. The crosswalk and redesign of the school parking lot will be built this summer, as a result of a partnership between the Township of Langley and Langley School District. It will be the only marked crosswalk on 29 Avenue between 264 and 272 Streets and will be used by students from both the high school and the adjacent Betty Gilbert Middle School. Councillor Charlie Fox says this aspect of the project is a done deal, however, the issue of whether traffic calming measures would be undertaken at the crosswalk requires approval of 67 per cent of neighbouring

residents. Ballots and letters informing residents of this option have gone out to 900 homes in the area within one kilometre of the high school. The deadline for responses is Dec. 13, and if approved by two-thirds or more of respondents an open house would be held in the new year to present the traffic calming design concepts to the public. The options include speed bumps and curb bulges (to prevent motorists from passing stopped cars on the inside lane) between 267A and 269A Streets. Traffic-pedestrian lights are not included in the plans. Regardless of whether the traffic calming is approved, Fox says the crosswalk plans will go ahead, as approved by the Township-School District Liaison Committee.

“This is a cooperative effort by the Township and District to make a four-way intersection at 268A Street, with a designated crosswalk,” said Fox. “Both sides are aboard, and the funding allocation has been included in the budgets, and it would be built next summer in about a four-week project.” “We’re excited to have the green light on this,” said Aldergrove Secondary principal John Pusic. “It’s been a longstanding issue of safety for the students at both schools, and I give credit to the Leadership Team students at our school for their petition to TransLink and the Township earlier this year which really brought this issue to the forefront.” The crosswalk design involves a redesign of the school parking lot and SEE: Page 3 entrances.

Youth are the invisible homeless By MONIQUE TAMMINGA Aldergrove Star

Walk down a bustling hallway at any of Langley’s high schools and you will most likely walk past a homeless teenager. A homeless youth looks like any other student, said Loren Roberts, manager of youth homelessness for Aldergrove Neighbourhood Services. He or she can be a straight A student who lives in a vehicle, or buses in from a shelter outside of Langley each day to get to class. She can be a youth who is couch surfing or living with her friend’s family, he said. “A lot of the kids we work with aren’t homeless because of their own behaviour. Sometimes it is something as shocking as their family has up and left them. “Other times, it is family tragedy, the home is abusive and unsafe to go to, there has been a brain injury of one of the parents. It can be for so many reasons,” Roberts said. There are also young people whose own behaviour has led them to homelessness, from criminal actions and substance abuse to just not wanting to live with their parents’ rules or curfew, he said. Most of the schools in Langley offer a lunch program. Administrators try and take care of clothing needs when some youth come to school with no jackets, or shoes that are falling apart, as has been the case several times this year. “I think there is this misconception out there that a homeless teen is someone begging out on the streets,” said Langley Secondary principal Dawne Tomlinson. “They look like any other student in our school. “The difference that nobody sees is they aren’t living with any fam-

ily members, they are couch surfing and the only safe place for them is school.” She has one student who takes a bus and Skytrain to get to LSS each day. He had addictions but now doesn’t miss a day of school and will graduate. Tomlinson said often kids will surf from couch to couch but too many times, a student will come to her on a Friday afternoon and say he has nowhere to sleep that weekend. “And that’s where there is trouble, because the ministry is closed and we can’t get them services on a Friday.” At LSS, they feed 60 to 100 kids a lunch every day. Out of school population of 850, that is way too high a number and speaks to the levels of poverty in Langley, she said. “We live in our middle class world and we don’t see the amount of poverty in Langley, in our own backyard.” This statement came on the same day a report found B.C. has the worst child poverty rate in Canada, again. The lunch program costs LSS around $13,000 to operate per year, which all comes from fundraising dollars, she said. After seeing too many teens in such crisis situations, she started a community round table and through that the Aldergrove Neighbourhood Services has an office open on Mondays at the school, to help those most at risk. There is also a family support worker at the school and very determined counsellors. Through these services, teens aren’t reaching a crisis point as often, she said. The number of homeless youth in Langley fluctuates, but on some nights, up to six have nowhere to live

or sleep. But what makes Langley’s homeless youth unique is there is no emergency shelter for them here. There are no beds and no transitional housing. “There are youth shelters we can send them to in Abbotsford and in Surrey and those places are very accommodating, but we need something permanent in Langley. “Most of these kids attend school here and are ingrained here,” Roberts said. “Their friends are here.” Last year, Roberts was in front of both Langley councils pleading for funding to operate a Youth Extreme Weather Response shelter. He received the funding for last year. This year will be the first “full” year of the weather shelter response which will provide overnight shelter, in partnership with St. Dunstan’s Church in Aldergrove. ANS will also provide SafeRide, which will provide youth with a ride, whether it be a taxi, bus ticket or some way to get them to overnight shelter just by calling the agency. Funding for this year’s initiative has come from in-kind support from the Langley RCMP, Ministry of Child and Family Development and the Child and Youth sub-committee and Healthier Communities Partnership. With the weather beginning to turn colder, Roberts has already put into action two extreme weather response nights, once when the rain came sideways and the other when temperatures dipped below zero. The response will piggyback on the Gateway of Hope’s Extreme Weather Response for adults. “We had a phone call from a

Residents to vote on ‘calming’

friend wanting to find shelter for a teen but otherwise we didn’t have any youth use the shelter service that night,” Roberts said of the first call. “It’s going to be that way where we won’t always need a bed,” he said. But the point is there is a need for some help for at risk and homeless youth in the form of some kind of transitional housing. But like the Gateway of Hope, it will have to be a full community response. “Our local municipalities are open to learning more and the Ministry of Child Development has been supportive to our program so all of this makes us hopeful,” said Roberts.

“Really we don’t need anything as big as the Gateway of Hope. We need a two- or three-bed program.” Housing Minister Rich Coleman was instrumental in getting provincial funding for Gateway of Hope, and a major community response, spearheaded by the four Langley Rotary Clubs, helped its all come together. Roberts would love to see the same efforts made for youth. If you are a youth or know of a youth who needs shelter during extreme weather, call 604-530-6477 between 7 p.m. and midnight, and transportation to the shelter will be arranged.

The two existing entrances to the school would be closed and fenced off, and replaced with a single entrance directly across from 268A Street, where the crosswalk would be built. Pusic said this makes sense as it would create a more orderly procession of students crossing 29 Avenue at 268A Street, instead of walking through the existing two gates and jaywalking across 29 Avenue willy-nilly. He notes that many of the students walk directly down 268A Street to their homes on the north side of 29 Avenue. Pusic and Fox said they hope the traffic calming proposal will be approved as it would serve to slow down traffic on 29 Avenue, which is all too often used as a thoroughfare by speeding motorists. However, “I just want there to be no misunderstanding,” said Fox. “The crosswalk is a separate issue from the traffic calming and regardless of the outcome of the ballots we will proceed with the crosswalk.”

There are a number of students attending school in Langley who do not have homes to go to at night. Many are couch surfing, staying with friends, but there are a few with no place to go. Aldergrove Neighbourhood Services is seeking support for a permanent shelter for those who are stranded.

Aldergrove Secondary’s Leadership Team students petitioned for a marked crosswalk in front of the school on 29 Avenue earlier this year, and local government has now approved a plan for the installation of crosswalks this summer.

A group of last year’s grade 12 students known as the Global Voices Group from DW Poppy, generously donated $300, as well as some much-needed toiletry items, to Aldergrove Neighbourhood Services. Darien Johnson of Global Voices requested a presentation from youth outreach workers at ANS at the school to talk about the issues surrounding youth homelessness. The funds were used towards the purchase of necessities to support youth accessing the program. This includes groceries, transit fares and clothing items. The group fundraised within the school for this worthy cause. Aldergrove Neighbourhood Services, a community-based non-

Township urged to save Salmon River By DAN FERGUSON Aldergrove Star

Calling the Salmon River “something extraordinary,” a fisheries expert has urged Langley Township council to take steps to preserve the waterway that runs through Fort Langley to connect with the Fraser River. Dr. Marvin Rosenau of BCIT’s Fish Wildlife and Recreation program told the Oct. 28 meeting that development decisions by the mayor and councillors directly affect the Salmon River and the fish that swim in it. “You guys are the deciders,” Rosenau said, “…the deciding factor as to whether the Salmon River will survive or not.” He warned against “hardening of the landscape” by allowing construction too close to the stream. Concrete and pavement will increase runoff into the river, eroding the fish habitat as the stream bed gets dirtier, Rosenau said. “You’ve got lots of decisions [about development near the waterway] to make,” Rosenau said. “The science is pretty straightforward.” During the questionand-answer that followed the presentation, Mayor Jack Froese said the challenge for council is balancing growth with preservation. “We have to put peo-

Fewer classes over 30 in Langley schools By MONIQUE TAMMINGA Aldergrove Star

It seems Bill 22 legislation to keep class sizes under 30 students is working in Langley. Assistant superintendent Claire Guy provided a “good news report” to the board of education on class sizes this year at the Tuesday night

meeting. “In all of Langley, we only had five classes over 30 students this year,” said Guy. “We had 13 last year, so thank you to the principals for their hard work to organize classrooms.” As part of the province’s Bill 22 legislation, teachers are compensat-

ed financially for classes that have more than 30 students. Last year, the district paid out $6,700 to teachers. This year, it will only be $3,000, said Guy. “Numbers in classrooms matter, so my thanks to all who worked hard on this,” said school board chair Wendy Johnson.

Space heater suspected cause in fatal fire By BRENDA ANDERSON Aldergrove Star

Materials left too close to a bedroom space heater are the suspected cause of a fatal townhouse fire in Langley on Thursday evening, Nov. 28. One person died and two others were taken to hospital after fire broke out in a rear bedroom of a unit inside a four-plex in the 23800 block of Old Yale Road. A space heater was found, plugged in, in the room where the fire is believed to have originated,

said Langley Township assistant fire chief Pat Walker. The fire started sometime before 6:30 p.m. By the time Township fire crews arrived at 6:37 p.m., a portion of the building was fully engulfed in flames. The four units in the older townhouse complex are separated by concrete block walls, but once the flames broke through the ceiling of the first unit, the fire traveled horizontally, causing smoke and fire damage to the rest of the building, explained Walker.

Once the fire was inside the attic, it became very difficult to fight, he said. By the time crews wrapped up, it was well after 11 p.m. One of the injured victims was airlifted to hospital with what police described as life-threatening injuries. Another was reportedly treated for minor injuries and released. The fire displaced the residents of all four units and B.C. Hydro has cut power to the entire property, said Walker.

VICTORIA – Last week I described the inevitable demise of B.C.’s “carbon neutral government” scheme, which continues to take millions from hospitals and schools to fund greenhouse gas reduction projects of questionable value. It’s like the AirCare program, a pollution solution that sounded great at the time. AirCare soon found itself chasing diminishing environmental returns, made redundant by new vehicle technology and the financial need to save fuel. Public sector carbon offsets will suffer the same fate, growing as a political liability as their effectiveness declines. All this is separate from B.C.’s carbon tax and greenhouse gas reduction program, another environmental trial balloon that is sinking back to Earth. Former premier Gordon Campbell’s climate goals officially remain in place: 33 per cent greenhouse gas reduction by 2020 and a whopping 80 per cent by 2050. If the gas boom proceeds as planned, B.C. domestic emissions will not be down, but up substantially by 2020. New liquefied natural gas export proposals continue to pop up, the latest ones on former industrial sites near Squamish and Campbell River. And with the surge of LNG activity around Kitimat and Prince Rupert already changing the landscape, questions linger about the pollution and

Greenhouse gas trial balloon leaks

greenhouse gas impacts. As she left for the government’s largest ever trade mission to Asia, Premier Christy Clark dismissed a study that estimated the impact of three LNG plants. That study, done by Kitimat environment group Skeena Wild, assumed “direct drive” technology to chill and compress gas for export. It concluded that three plants would burn two and a half times the amount of natural gas currently used in Metro Vancouver. Clark and Environment Minister Mary Polak relied on the same talking point to reject the study. The technology of powering LNG is still being negotiated, as producers work towards environmental permits, so the total can’t be calculated yet. BC Hydro is predicting little electricity demand for LNG until after 2020, which suggests the early development will either be direct drive, the industry standard and simplest method, or building one or more gas-fired power plants in northwest B.C. Even if gas usage is only equivalent to one Lower Mainland, it’s plain to see greenhouse gas emissions are going up. Clark has repeatedly argued that B.C. LNG should get credit for displacing coal in China and elsewhere. I asked Polak if the international community would accept B.C.’s assertion that emissions from our LNG pro-

duction shouldn’t count. “We haven’t said we won’t count them,” Polak replied. “What the premier’s talked about and I’ve talked about is that this whole issue of how one accounts for greenhouse gases in a particular region is one that is constantly evolving. There are regularly changes to the international standards for accounting for these things and reporting them. And certainly the ability for one jurisdiction to impact positively on the GHG emissions of another, we think is appropriately considered in how one accounts for these things.” Clark visited the Jiangsu LNG import facility in China that could be a key export destination. Globe and Mail China correspondent Nathan Vanderklippe covered the premier’s visit. He reports that the gas being imported at Jiangsu isn’t replacing coal. It’s being used in addition to coal in peak demand periods. Clark also visited Japan, another key customer for LNG. The whole world knows why Japan needs new energy sources. It needs to replace production from its disastertainted nuclear facilities. Will B.C. LNG be part of the solution to humaninduced climate change? On the evidence so far, the answer is no. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalNews.com Twitter:@tomfletcherbc E-mail: tfletcher@blackpress.ca

Editor: Men such as Mr Richard Kinder, Mr. William Morgan, Mr Ian Anderson and Mr. Greg Toth (who recently spoke to the Langley Chamber of Commerce concerning the twinning of the Kinder Morgan pipeline through the Fraser Valley) are clearly intelligent and passionate people. They are also in positions of significant power and influence. Therefore, I invite the citizens of Langley to join me in making the following requests of them: 1. to be mindful of the mounting scientific evidence of global climate change, and how these changes are accelerated by the combustion of fossil fuels and the collateral damage caused by extracting and transporting fossil fuels. 2. to divest funds currently invested in the fossil fuel industry and lead the way towards its down-sizing and ultimate discontinuance over the next 20 years. 3. to re-direct resources and influence towards the proliferation of energy production that is environmentally sustainable and socially just, as well as financially profitable. Susan Davidson, Aldergrove

Where there’s smoke... Editor: Which city will Metro Vancouver choose to build its toxic emission-spewing garbage incinerator? It will also create over 100,000 tonnes per year of toxic and hazardous ashes requiring geomembrane-lined land fill sites. If they build outside of the Metro area will that city have to pay the ‘put or pay’ penalty if the waste won’t burn? Also, will that city be responsible for landfilling the ashes? Sweden is touted as the shining example of incineration and recycling but there is a hidden truth. Because of recycling they don’t have enough combustible garbage and have to import garbage from across Europe. They also have a policy of not allowing the hazardous/toxic ashes to be landfilled so they are sent to neighbouring Norway and mixed into concrete to fill old mine shafts. How long before this toxic concrete cocktail breaks down and pollutes Norway’s groundwater and fjords? When you put our provincial government’s irresponsible fracking policy into the equation the whole province could eventually become a toxic wasteland. If you live, or know of someone who does live in one of these ‘chosen cities’ help make sure that this environmental monstrosity, and all of the ensuing problems it will bring, never gets built. Gary Huntbatch, Abbotsford

Pipelines create opportunities Editor: For the most part, arguments against the Kinder Morgan project are at best sheer speculation and short on facts. The Alberta Heritage fund currently has $16 billion in funds and since inception has returned over $34 billion to the province, with the focus being on health care and education. The Kinder Morgan expansion, as I understand it, will use the existing right-of -way that includes the current line. Comments about the inevitability of an oil spill is not borne out by any facts. Again, it is speculation. The original pipelines in B.C. were installed with the barest of public discussion or inputs. The current proposals are an opportunity for any community to investigate and participate, ensuring all fail safes are in place and working. The harsh reality of the proposed oil and gas projects for B.C. is this. These projects will allow a very large work force to generate enough income to hopefully purchase homes, raise and educate a family and in some part ensure a financially sustainable future. I have over 30 years experience working in the industry, suffered total financial ruin in the recession of the 1980s and worked myself back to financial security, working in Alberta and B.C. ‘B-WET’ gets to work in Aldergrove Aldergrove Star

The Bertrand Watershed Education Team (B-WET) is a project delivered by Langley Environmental Partners Society (LEPS) in partnership with the Bertrand Creek Enhancement Society. The B-WET project is working to enhance critical habitat for the native and endangered species that live in and around Bertrand Creek in Aldergrove. Historically, Bertrand Creek was forested and its waters supported many populations of salmon and other aquatic species. Over the years, urban and agricultural development has impacted Bertrand Creek. However, Bertrand Creek remains a hotspot of biodiversity. It is one of only a handful of watersheds that host two of

Canada’s most endangered fish species, the Nooksack dace and the Salish sucker. Bertrand Creek is also home to the endangered Oregon spotted Frog, the threatened Coastal Cutthroat trout, and numerous species of Pacific salmon, with spawning salmon spotted this fall in Vanetta Park at 32 Ave. Though Bertrand Creek has been negatively affected by development in the Aldergrove area, there are many ways that landowners can minimize their impact on Bertrand Creek. This can be done by removing invasive plant species such as Himalyan blackberry; avoiding the use of pesticide and fertilizers; limiting impervious (paved) surfaces by using wooden decks and pervious parking areas; and

planting native vegetation in your garden. B-WET is restoring the native habitat along Bertrand Creek by removing invasive plant species, removing trash from the creek, and offering free native plants to landowners along Bertrand Creek to enhance streamside areas. It is important to restore native vegetation along Bertrand Creek as it will prevent erosion and sediment from entering in the stream, filter pollutants, provide shade to cool the stream for fish, stabilize the creek banks; and provide habitat for native birds and other wildlife. The B-WET team will be in Aldergrove for the next couple of months working on Bertrand Creek restoration projects. If

you are interested in volunteering your time to help restore Bertrand Creek, or you are a streamside landowner interested in participating in the project, please contact Carly at cstromsten@tol.ca or call 604-5323511. Bertrand Creek Enhancement Society (BCES), formed in 1993 as a group of volunteers from the Aldergrove community, works towards the restoration of Bertrand Creek. Volunteers are needed to help plant native trees and shrubs and remove invasive species. To volunteer with the BCES please contact Lisa at 604532-3517 or ldreves@tol.ca, or join them at a meeting, held the third Wednesday of the month at the Aldergrove Community Secondary School library.

Christmas in the Park Aldergrove Star

For more than 20 years, families from throughout Langley and across the Lower Mainland have been coming by carload and busload to see a local park transformed into a winter wonderland. The tradition continues as Christmas in Williams Park enters its 23rd year, and community volunteers and the Township of Langley have teamed up to welcome visitors and some very special guests — including Santa himself. “This is a holiday tradition that people have been enjoying for more than two decades,” said Township of Langley Recreation Programmer Tasha Mijinke. “The thousands of lights and holiday decorations combined with the natural beauty of Williams Park is something visitors just love. They look forward to it every year.” She noted that people who enjoyed Christmas in Williams Park when they were kids are now bringing their own children out to the festive display.

SUBMITTED PHOTO

There will be plenty of festive holiday decorations, horse-drawn carriage rides and lots of tasty treats. From Monday, Dec. 2 to Thursday, Dec. 12, guests can drive through Williams Park, at 238 Street and 68 Avenue, to see the show of lights from the comfort of their own vehicles. The Scenic Drive is open from 5:30 to 9 p.m. On Friday and Saturday, Dec. 13 and 14, visitors can enter the park on foot to enjoy a celebration that includes entertainment, horse and carriage rides, face painting, food and hot drinks, and a visit with Santa Claus. The Walk and Celebrate events run from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The event is free, but donations are gratefully accepted and will be used

to stage Christmas in Williams Park again next year. “So many people come out to make this annual event a success,” said Mijinke, noting that a committee of volunteers organizes and oversees Christmas in Williams Park, and individuals, organizations, and businesses pitch in to cook hot dogs, put on displays, and provide activities. “They really show their Christmas spirit by giving their time and efforts to make this event enjoyable for everyone.” For information, call recreation programmer Tasha Mijinke at tmijinke@tol.ca or 604-8562899 ext. 102

2014 Auxiliary Firefighter Recruitment

Author, Illustrator and Star of the Book Visit RC Garnett RC Garnett Grade 1 Teacher Chantelle Saumier and Lynn Fripps Grade 3 Teacher Vanessa Steunenberg have teamed up to create two new children’s books: Vinnie, Star of the Show and Vinnie the Hurricane. Written by Ms. Saumier and illustrated by Ms. Steunenberg, the books feature Ms. Saumier’s real-life pet dog Vinnie, and are full of fun and doggie mayhem to capture young readers. Ms. Saumier and Ms. Stuenenberg visited RC Garnett and spent the day with students discussing the book writing and illustrating process but, as life imitates art, it was Vinnie that stole the show.

On Saturday Dec. 7, the museum will host families at a program in the morning and at one in the afternoon that harkens back to simple days gone by. The museum will be transformed into a virtual pioneer Christmas town with various stations

throughout, intended to delight and entertain those young at heart. At the museum’s front door, children will be greeted by a banker and a railway ticket agent. The banker will give each child a penny allowance, while the ticket agent will hand them their time travel pass providing access to the many stations they can visit while at the museum. The journey to meet Santa will be filled with many fun

activities along the way. The penny will come in handy when they visit the museum’s general store, where they can hand the store clerk the shiny coin for a piece of penny candy or another delicious treat. And once the children have had their tickets punched at each of the stations they can finally visit Santa. Santa will be giving each child who has gone on this journey a special elf-made gift. Christmas Let It Snow!

Silent Night

Oh, the weather outside is frightful, But the fire is so delightful, And since we’ve no place to go, Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

Silent night, holy night, All is calm, all is bright Round yon virgin mother and child. Holy infant so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace. Sleep in heavenly peace.

It doesn’t show signs of stopping, And I brought some corn for popping; The lights are turned way down low, Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. When we finally say good night, How I’ll hate going out in the storm; But if you really hold me tight, All the way home I’ll be warm. The fire is slowly dying, And, my dear, we’re still good-bye-ing, But as long as you love me so. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

Silent night, holy night, Shepherds quake at the sight, Glories stream from heaven afar, Heavenly hosts sing alleluia; Christ the Saviour, is born! Christ the Saviour, is born!

Winter Wonderland Sleigh bells ring, are you listening, in the lane, snow is glistening A beautiful sight, we’re happy tonight, walking in a winter wonderland. Gone away is the bluebird, here to stay is a new bird He sings a love song, as we go along, walking in a winter wonderland. In the meadow we can build a snowman, Then pretend that he is Parson Brown He’ll say: Are you married? We’ll say: No man, But you can do the job when you’re in town. Later on, we’ll conspire, as we dream by the fire To face unafraid, the plans that we’ve made, walking in a winter wonderland.

Joy To The World

Away in a Manger

Joy to the world! The Lord is come: Let earth receive her King. Let ev’ry heart prepare Him room, And heaven and nature sing, And heaven and nature sing, And heaven and heaven and nature sing. He rules the world with truth and grace, And makes the nations prove The glories of His righteousness And wonders of His love, And wonders of His love, And wonders, wonders of His love.

Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head. The stars in the sky looked down where he lay, The little Lord Jesus asleep in the hay. The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes, But little Lord Jesus no crying he makes. I love Thee, Lord Jesus, look down from the sky And stay by my cradle til morning is nigh. Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay Close by me forever, and love me, I pray. Bless all the dear children in thy tender care, And take us to heaven, to live with Thee there.

I supported photo radar initially because when used in high-collision locations, elsewhere in the world, it has a remarkable record for reducing death and injuries. It never operated that way in BC and soon became public enemy number one where it was perceived as merely a cash cow for greedy provincial government. The 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 is a stylish price buster The Mercedes CLA 250 is here and it is a cause for celebration. This stylish compact car is powerful, filled with all kinds of features and starts at an amazing $33,900. What this means for the entire car market is a trend towards more car for less money. If Mercedes Benz can sell such a competent car for so little, the pressure will be on non-premium brands to sharpen their pencil, add

more features, and revise their prices lower. Mercedes already has a very affordable hatchback with the B250, which arrived about a year ago and is the basis for this CLA. Both of these cars open up Mercedes Benz to a new market of buyers who might have been thinking about buying a non-premium brand but now realized a CLA is within reach. This, along with Mercedes strong resale value will help to keep

Zack Spencer

lease rates low, amplifying the value this car offers. Looks Mercedes helped create the “coupe” 4-door sedan several years ago with the CLS sedan, which is based

on the E-Class sedan. By dropping the roof, raking the front and rear windows and adding a more aggressive front end, produces an eye-catching sedan that looks classy and aggressive at the same time. Mercedes has taken this formula and applied it to the B-Class platform to produce this coupe-like sedan. The base model comes with 17-inch wheels but the sport package is great value, at $1,600, which adds 18-inch

AMG wheels and extra AMG exterior trim pieces. The side windows are slim as is the back window for limited outward visibility, not so much for the driver but the rear seat passengers, especially kids. Inside One trend I’m not sure I like is placing a screen in the centre of the dash, like putting an iPad Mini in the middle of the dash. It doesn’t look particularly polished, almost like an

afterthought. Audi’s new A3 sedan, arriving in March, has the ability to lower their screen, which I think is a better approach. The premium package is a must because it includes a huge panoramic sunroof, backup camera, automatic climate control and heated front seats; all of this for $2,800. This is a small car; the roof feels very low and back seat passenger’s needs to be children or shorter adults. Rear seat outward visibility is limited and legroom is also at a premium. Drive The launch event for this new CLA was held in the Washington DC area, leaving historic Georgetown and heading towards Maryland’s ports and navel academy. This provided some excellent stop-and-go traffic opportunities in Washington’s morning rush hour and then getting to stretch the new CLA’s legs on fabulous Interstate highways. The power plant is a direct injection turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with a healthy 208hp. The power goes through a 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission to the front wheels. The more expensive and powerful 355hp CLA 45 AMG has an all wheel drive (AWD) system as standard equipment but the base CLA 250 will get this important option sometime in 2014. Power is fantastic, especially if the transmission is placed in the sportier mode. This car cruises effortlessly at highway speeds and passes with ease. All CLA models come with a Collision Prevention Assist feature that alerts the driver to the possibility of an impending collision. Verdict We are heading into a wonderful period of lower priced cars, or vehicle fitted with more standard features. This new CLA 250 is a perfect example of this. Other new entries include the latest A3 that arrives in March and starts at $31,100 and then the new BMW 1 Series will arrive in about a year. For the price of a well-equipped non-premium brand Canadians can now get a premium German sedan for about the same price. If I were to get this CLA 250, I would include the premium package to get the sunroof, backup camera and heated seats. The Sport package is also tempting for the bigger wheels. This would bring the price up to $38,300. Not cheap, but you do a get a lot of car and features for this price. I hear that BC’s Mercedes Benz dealers have had huge interest in this new CLA with back orders now in place as they try to get as many cars as they can. A nice problem for Mercedes to have and they deserve it as this is a great car for the money. zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca

Drives-U-Crazy Amateur speed cops

Self-appointed speed cops are a danger to themselves and everybody else on the road. We’ve all seen them in action: they stick themselves in the centre lane at the speed limit and will not move over to let anybody pass. It promotes impatience and frustration which leads to smashes. Leave speed enforcement to the cops. What drives-u-crazy. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Kodiaks outscore Steelers in wild finish By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star

A hat trick from Aldergrove Kodiaks’ league leading scorer Stephen Ryan helped propel his team to their sixth straight win and a top spot in the Junior B hockey league Wednesday night. When the dust had settled from a wild third period the Aldergrove Kodiaks had an 8-6 victory over the Grandview Steelers. The game was played Nov. 27 at the Aldergrove Arena. The Kodiaks lead the PJHL’s Harold Brittain Conference with a record of 16-4-02 and 34 points, three points clear of the secondplace Abbotsford Pilots. Aldergrove is also just two points back of the Delta Ice Hawks, who lead the junior B hockey league with 36 points. The Kodiaks do have a pair of games in hand, however. The two teams play in Aldergrove on Dec. 4. In the win over the Steelers, Stephen Ryan scored twice in the opening period for a 2-0 Kodiaks lead. Grandview’s Timothy Chow and Mitchell Steinke tallied 19 sec-

onds apart in the second to tie the game, but Kenny Prato and Adam Callegari restored the two-goal advantage prior to intermission. And that set the stage for a frantic final 20 minutes in which each team scored four times. Quinncy Leroux, Ryan, Spencer McHaffie and Callegari tallied for the home side while Christopher Seto with a pair, and Chow and Quinn Lenihan responded for the Steelers. Aldergrove outshot the Steelers 37-27 and scored on three of eight power plays, while the Steelers scored on one of three. Jordan Liem made 21 saves for the victory while Ryan (three goals, one assist) led the attack and earned game first star. Kodi Schwarz finished with three assists. Joshua Cronin had a pair of assists and earned game third star, while second star went to Seto. The Kodiaks now have a week off, until Delta Ice Hawks come calling at Aldergrove Arena, Wednesday, Dec. 4, 7:15 p.m. puck drop. The Kodiaks have two away games next week, versus Mission City Outlaws, Dec. 5 and

Grandview Steelers, Dec. 8, before they host North Delta Devils, Wednesday, Dec. 11, 7:15 p.m. KODIAKS SHARE THE SPIRIT The Kodiaks team of owners, staff, players and volunteers invite their fans to join them in helping the Aldergrove Food Bank and Christmas Bureau with a food drive and teddy bear toss in December. The teddy bear toss will be at the Dec. 18 home game versus crosstown rivals Abbotsford Pilots. Fans are asked to bring a teddy bear or other stuffed critter, unwrapped but in a plastic bag to the game. Then when the Kodiaks score their first goal fans simply throw the stuffed animals onto the ice surface. The Kodiaks will pick up the stuffed animals and deliver them to the Christmas Bureau for distribution. In addition, at the Dec. 4, 11 and 18 home games everyone who brings a non-perishable food item for donation to the Food Bank will receive $1 off regular admission price. This “Fill the Net” promotion will have a goal set up for fans to put their donations, which will be delivered to the Food Bank for distribution.

Aldergrove Bantam A1 Bruins after their championship win in Kelowna.

Bantam A1 Bruins are Champs Aldergrove Star

The Aldergrove Bantam A1 Bruins returned home from Kelowna last weekend as Champions. The Bruins got off to a slow start on Friday by dropping their first game 3-0 against a very strong Quesnel team. Game 2 had the Bruins pitted against another strong competitor in the Kamloops Jr. Blazers. Aldergrove struggled in the second period to generate enough offence to stay close but they did battle back to a 7-4 loss (empty net goal) to leave them 0-2 early on in the tourney. The next game saw the Bruins’ offensive power come to life, scoring 10 times against the

host Kelowna Jr. Rockets team. The game ended 10-2 and left Aldergrove with a 1-2 record in round robin play. Because of the crossover format, in a six-team tournament, Aldergrove crossed over into the semifinals on Sunday morning and took control of the West Kelowna Warriors, winning the game convincingly with a 6-1 score, earning the Bruins a berth in the final against Quesnel. With the train already rolling in the right direction, Aldergrove went on to beat the Quesnel Thunder 6-2 in the final and were crowned the Champions. The Bruins team consists of Kallum Dierkhising, James “JC” Carter, Jonny Rees Jr., Josh

Boelema, Travis Sharman, Jake McDonald, Jake Kristensen, Jordan Desrosiers, Dustin Hallberg, Liam Casey, Caleb Boelema, Zane Bouchard, Dayton Edwards, Bradley Taylor, Dawson Schwarz, Riley Jones, Dawson Ivison and Brian Chick. The Bruins have two regular season tournaments remaining this year with one in Langley and the other in Portland, Oregon. The Bruins’ end goal is to earn a spot and compete in the Bantam A Provincials being hosted this March in Mission. The Bruins’ team and staff would like to thank all of their families and friends for all of their support this season,” said coach Lyall Sharman.

Celebrating the Power of Sport

FUTURE SHOP - Correction Notice

Top-flight guest coach Craig Sherbaty worked with Aldergrove’s TimBit hockey players at Aldergrove Arena as part of RBC Sports Day in Canada events on Saturday, Nov. 30. Sports Day is designed to give people a chance to try out new sports without having to commit to enrollment fees. Health Minister Terry Lake said, “Sports Day in Canada is an opportunity for all British Columbians to celebrate the power of sport, build stronger communities and facilitate healthy active living. “Through the Healthy Families BC strategy, our government is developing new partnerships with communities, schools and employers to support people in making healthier choices through programs that aim to reduce tobacco use, increase opportunities for physical activity, support healthy eating and promote healthy weights. “We are committed to making the healthy choice the easier choice for British Columbians. British Columbia was the first jurisdiction to partner with ParticipACTION, investing $6 million to help increase physical activity levels throughout our province.”

We would like to clarify that in the November 29 flyer, page 5, the advertised prices for TELUS Optik TV HD-PVR Digital Box / TELUS Optik TV HD Digital Box (WebID: 10193848 / 10151026) are only valid from November 29 - December 2, 2013. Also, on page 12 of the Black Weekend Wrap, the LG 42” LN5200 Series LED TV (WebID: 10273690) was incorrectly advertised as having 2x HDMI ports, when in fact it ONLY has 1. Also, on page 4, the Bose CineMate 1 SR Home Theatre System (WebCode: 10178456) was advertised at $1359.99 when in fact the correct price is $1439.99 with a TV purchase. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused our valued customers.

In addition to some of the world’s top figure skating talent, this year’s Holiday Festival on Ice will feature award-winning jazz singer Holly Cole. Cole, a Canadian jazz singer, will be at the Langley Events Centre on Dec. 6, performing Christmas favourites lives while the figure skaters perform on the ice. Some of the stars slated to attend the event include figure skating legends Kurt Browning, Elvis Stojko and Joannie Rochette. Browning is a four-time world champion while Stojko twice won Olympic silver medals in his career. Rochette won bronze at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, delivering a stunning performance with a heavy heart just days after her mother’s sudden passing. She became the first Canadian figure skater to land on the podium in 22 years. Also slated to perform are Jeffery Buttle, Kimmie Meisner, Sinead Kerr, John Kerr and Shawn Sawyer. This is the second year the show will be held at the Langley Events Centre. The event will be filmed by CBC and replayed throughout the holiday season. The show begins at 7 p.m. and tickets are available through Ticketmaster.

LANGLEY BYPASS

Starting December 9, 224 Street will be closed to through traffic from 52 Avenue and 56 Avenue for approximately two weeks.

Township Council adopted a number of bylaw amendments on March 4, 2013, authorizing an annual secondary suite licence fee of $350 and an additional 30 per cent in water and sewer utility fees (where applicable) for property owners with a secondary suite. A phasing-in strategy was also adopted to provide a graduated fee schedule for owners of existing authorized suites, where building permit applications were submitted for the secondary suite on or before March 5, 2013. The reduced annual fee of $175 will be in effect for the first three years unless the property is sold. Secondary suites that qualify for the reduced rate program will not be charged the additional 30 per cent utility fees until July, 2014. The deadline to qualify for the three-year reduced rate for property owners with existing authorized suites is fast approaching. Letters have been issued by the Township, reminding secondary suite owners who received building permit applications before March 5 to take advantage of the three year reduced rate by submitting their application and payment before December 31, 2013. Please note that departments within the Township’s Civic Facility will be closed between Christmas and New Year’s Day. However, applications and payments by cheque can be dropped off at the Customer Service Counter or in the overnight Drop Box. Unlicensed suites will be proactively enforced and property owners who do not bring unauthorized secondary suites into compliance with Township bylaws and the BC Building Code could be fined up to $500 per day until compliance is obtained. HAPPY THOUGHTS

TRAVIS WATTERS, a severe underdog, stunned champion LORI KADAGIES in a game of words with friends. A true testament to a”Never give up” attitude, Watters used a flurry of big point words late in the game to leave champion Kadagies “bewildered”. Kadagies admitted she took the challenger lightly and didn’t train properly. This is a true “Davey vs Goliath” story.
