Former MP fourth to vie for Conservative nod
Gurmant Grewal
By Frank Bucholtz Three-term former MP Gurmant Grewal is seeking the Conservative nomination in the new riding of Cloverdale-Langley City. While word of Grewal’s interest in the nomination came out several months ago, he hasn’t been actively campaigning for the nomination. He recently told Black Press that he is waiting until the House of Commons formally adopts the Electoral Boundaries Commission report that creates the new seat, something that’s expected soon.

Other declared candidates for the nomination are Dave Hayer, who served as BC Liberal MLA in Surrey-Tynehead from 2001 to 2013, businessman Paul Brar and longtime Cloverdale resident and community activist Mike Garisto. All four candidates are Surrey residents. Grewal said he expects at least one Langley resident to also enter the nomination race. Parade to light up Cloverdale By Jennifer Lang The eighth-annual Surrey’s Santa Parade of Lights rolls through the historic Cloverdale downtown this Sunday (Dec. 8), starting at 5 p.m. It’s a dazzling parade with floats and vehicles decorated with strings of Christmas lights. It offers plenty of community appeal, from high school bands and service clubs, to sports teams, Guides and Scouts, heavy equipment operators and old-time cars. Horses, too – Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino traditionally enters a Standardbred and driver or two, in race day regalia. The event is a fundraiser for the Surrey Food Bank and the Surrey Christmas Bureau and presented by the Cloverdale Chamber of Commerce and the Cloverdale BIA, along with sponsors.
BLACK PRESS FILE PHOTO
Hundreds of people watched the action at Surrey’s Santa Parade of Lights in downtown Cloverdale last year.
Visitors are asked to consider bringing a non-perishable food item or an unwrapped toy. The main stage at Hawthorne Square (5748 176 St., opening at 4 p.m.) will have music, an indoor open house with craft making for the kids, face painting, exhibitors and
a charity barbecue. The event will close with a ceremonial tree lighting and a visit from Santa at the end of the parade. As many as 85 to 100 floats and entries representing anywhere from 700 to 800 individuals are taking part. “The word on the streets is that we have
become one of the largest evening parades in the Lower Mainland,” says Paul Orazietti, executive director of the Cloverdale BIA. “We’re second only to the City of Victoria, that I’m aware of.” Entries are coming from as close as Langley, sending a contingent of old race cars, and as far away as Chilliwack and Vancouver Island, home to the Island Equipment Owners Association, sending 12 trucks to join this year’s convoy of lighted big rigs. The parade has drawn as many as 15,000 spectators in some years, so you’ll want to get there early to carve out a spot. “Literally, the sidewalks are jammed full, that’s why we went to an expanded route,” Orazietti said. The marshaling area is the Cloverdale Fairgrounds at 60 Ave., and
the parade runs east to 177B St., south to 58 Ave., and then west to 176 St., where it heads south to 56A Ave. For more, visit www. cloverdalebia.com.

Why Celebrate Christmas?
Every year, we are inundated with fat, glossy flyers, repetitive music, and glowing commercials all through the Christmas season. For some, the real reason for Christmas is buried underneath the false commercial joviality of Santa Claus and gift-giving. We should never lose sight of the real reason for celebrating! On December 25th, we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the one and only Son of God. He became a human being, lived on the earth for thirty-three years, and suffered a horribly painful death on the cross. Why should we celebrate that? The birth of Jesus Christ marked a dramatic milestone of change in human history. From that day forward, God’s plan for saving mankind from death came into effect. The life of Jesus Christ on earth was marked by great miracles, extreme suffering, and tragic death. But then, Jesus arose from the dead and ascended into heaven, and was seated victoriously at the right hand of God the Father. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, so that whoever believes in him shall Neighbourhood not perish, but have eternal life.” (John 3:16) Bible Studies If we believe in Jesus Christ, God does not even see our sins. The number of objections to having trains run along the Semiahmoo Peninsula’s waterfront is growing, with the mayors of White Rock and Surrey now joining forces to push for relocation of the rail line. Dangerous cargo, unstable bluffs, pedestrian safety, ‘landlocked’ neighbourhoods and fugitive coal dust are each being cited as reason enough to move the BNSF tracks. Throw in diesel exhaust, noise pollution and concerns that the tracks don’t follow a direct route, and collectively the issues are being described by some leaders as the “perfect storm.” And we, the taxpayers, are being asked to discuss whether such action – estimated to cost anywhere from $350-500 million – is worthy of consideration. But before investing even in research, it costs nothing to parse the reasons, separating potential tragedies unique to the Semiahmoo Peninsula from more universal concerns, as well as from the mere inconveniences that have grown from having a century of rail. Otherwise, critics will dismiss this issue as pure NIMBYism. For this reason, we suggest removing arguments that exist for other communities or

that would simply move problems to them. Coal dust? Horn blasts? Level crossings? Not overly welcome here, but likely not anywhere. The concern in Crescent Beach moves beyond inconvenience – when one considers a derailed train could block both exit routes – but, frankly, outsiders must find it odd

believing this is a major fear, when residents have had time enough in the past 100 years to move on. And as for there being more direct routes, BNSF will no doubt take this concern on its behalf under advisement. For some proponents of change, the final straw was last summer’s Lac-Mégantic tragedy, in which a runaway freight train carrying crude oil rolled downhill into the town centre and derailed, killing dozens. And, yes, such an occurrence here would be catastrophic. As it would in neighbouring Cloverdale or Langley – where freight trains run more frequently. But unless one were to make the squalid argument that tragedy here is somehow worse than in other areas, citing Lac-Mégantic for anything less than nationwide rail reform seems myopic, at best. In fact, the only substantial argument unique to the Peninsula is the fear of unstable bluffs. If the bluffs are at risk, we suggest our leaders table the debate and act. Now. If they’re safe, we suggest the mayors move on, as their actions are only giving their supporters false hope.

Hasty conclusion Re: “Grizzly bear trophy hunt a disgrace,” Letters, Nov. 21 The study said that they don’t really know how many bear there are in British Columbia, so what makes you so certain that their numbers are dwindling? Perhaps we need more information to determine if the number of tags for grizzly hunting is appropriate, but you don’t have enough information to call for an end to this hunt. I can tell you that the money raised from each grizzly bear hunt can do a great deal for this species as a whole. A trophy hunt for one bear means that funds may be available to save three. Careful wildlife management is key, and hunting is a critical part of that effort. So let’s not be so hasty to call an end to it before we know all the facts. To the editor; The citizens of Cloverdale have reason to be very proud of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 6. This is one of the largest and most active branches in B.C. As a resident of Langley I have joined this branch in conjunction with many other Langley residents to take advantage of the splendid entertainment and services provided by the host of volunteers who make your Legion Branch one of the best in the province or anywhere else. On Sunday I attended the terrific entertainment provided by The Versatiles. Two hours of outstanding comedy, songs and amusing skits by dedicated volunteers who ranged in age from reasonably young to an oldster of 92. The audience was enthralled and provided the entertainers with rounds of thundering applause. A raffle of many items were given to holders of lucky tickets and all provided by the generosity of the Cloverdale business community who showed their involvement in this outstanding local institution. My thanks to Branch 6 and all those dedicated individuals who guide this splendid organization.

A map showing four possible alignments of the BNSF line, currently a 19-km rail corridor passing through Douglas, White Rock, Crescent Beach, across Mud Bay and joining the main line at Colebrook.
White Rock’s coastline, then through Ocean Park and Crescent Beach before heading across Mud Bay and joining the main line at Colebrook Road. Watts cited a number of studies since 1995 that have looked at the feasibility of moving the rail line. Surrey staff revisited the 2002 Delcan Report this past June, and “realized very quickly that we needed to resurrect” the effort, she said. Watts said a memorandum of understanding signed last year for high-speed passenger-rail service between Vancouver and Seattle further supports the argument. “As I looked at that, I felt, ‘you’re going to have a problem,’” Watts said. “This current alignment will not support that in any way, shape or form.” She said safety issues with the existing route include population growth in the area; slope stability and erosion that increases the risk of landslides; pedestrian risk; access; and the transportation of dangerous goods. Predictions of a twometre rise in sea level and more wet weather must also be considered, she said. Realignment is estimated by the cities to cost $350-450 million. One option presented Nov. 26 parallels King George Boulevard and Highway 99,
and would see the line tunnelled between 16 and 36 avenues. Two of the three options for east of 176 Street are envisioned as largely elevated routes. Attendees were given “10 to 12 minutes”
to formally comment or ask questions. C ost and where the funds would come from were among concerns raised. One attendee wanted to know how many fatalities have oc-
curred along the line in its history; another asked Watts to “dig in your high heels” to help move the concept forward. An online survey on the project is at www. cityspeaks.ca/saferail.

Final push for hamper S A M T S I R H # drive this weekend AT ONRISE 3
Donations of food, toys and cash still urgently needed to meet goal By Jennifer Lang As the Cloverdale Christmas Hamper campaign enters its final push for donations to meet the need, the program has earned a strong show of support from another organization dedicated to helping the community – the Cloverdale Legion. On Tuesday, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 6 members Jan Campbell-Brewer and publicity chair Anne Sharkey presented a $2,000 cheque to Trish and Kevin Lunder of the Cloverdale Christmas Hamper Program. In the past, Branch 6 has run its own Christmas hamper program, distributing about 15 to local needy families last year. But members decided to refer their applicants to the Cloverdale Christmas Hamper Program, a non-denominational program

River dredging a concern Metro Vancouver’s board is concerned that future dredging on the lower Fraser River to accommodate increased shipping might trigger costly water infrastructure repairs. The region has six water tun-
nels that cross the Fraser to deliver drinking water to areas like Surrey and Langley and the latest tunnel being built to modern seismic standards is costing $250 million. Directors say they don’t want
to see regional taxpayers forced to pay again for such projects if Port Metro Vancouver pursues dredging of the channel after the Massey Tunnel is replaced with a promised high-level bridge.
“If we had to look at six replacements, there’s a really big price tag with that,” Metro board chair Greg Moore said. “It’s definitely on the radar – we’re concerned about that.”

tion blitz to collect as many donations as possible for the Cloverdale Christmas Hamper Program. The Surrey RCMP will be on hand, as will Surrey Firefighters, along with a firetruck (subject to availability). Santa Claus will be handing out candy canes. Enjoy hot chocolate and more. That runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the parking lot outside PriceSmart. Hampers will be assembled at Pacific Community Church next week by volunteers in advance of hamper pick up day on Dec. 14. “We’re getting lots of help this year,” Lunder said, explaining volunteers assisting with hampers include clubs, youth organizations, sports teams, families and even entire cul-de-sacs. “I’m feeling confident that the community’s coming together,” he said. The Cloverdale Christmas Hamper Program is run through the cooperation of local churches, businesses, schools, volunteers, and the wider community. The Lunders encouraged local businesswoman Jen Temple to take an even more active role this year in terms of recruiting corporate donations and sponsors. Temple is helping organize the one-day donation extravaganza this Saturday at the mall she manages for Trademark Group of Companies. “It’s been a real blessing having her on board this year,” he said. Donations of food, new toys and cash are being accepted to Dec. 10. Donations can be made at Pacific Community Church at 5337 180 Street or online at www.pacificcommunity.ca/ministries/ cloverdale-hamper-program. Donation boxes are also located throughout the Cloverdale community, from businesses to local schools, which are some of the program’s biggest supporters in terms of collecting non-perishable food items and more. Also appreciated are items such as grocery and food gift cards, personal care items, new socks, gloves and scarves, new, unwrapped children’s toys and gifts, and mall or store gift cards for youths.

Shop by shuttle By Jennifer Lang What better way to do your Christmas shopping – and experience historic downtown Cloverdale – on a cold winter’s day than to let someone else do the driving? Shoppers and sightseers are invited to climb on board a free shuttle bus that will be operating Saturdays this December. The shuttle is provided by West Wagon Tours, thanks to local sponsors, and the Cloverdale Chamber of Commerce and the Cloverdale BIA. The rides are free, but passengers are asked to bring along a non-perishable food item or a new, unwrapped toy for the Cloverdale Christmas Hamper Program, a local initiative that helps hundreds of local families and individuals each holiday season. Shopping shuttle pick up and drop off spots include Clover Square Village Mall, Brickyard Station, Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino, the Cloverdale Recreation Centre, PriceSmart Foods at Cloverdale Crossing and Hillcrest Mall. The shuttle runs Dec. 7, 14, and 22 from 10 a.m to 5 p.m. As an added service this year, the shuttle bus will be available to pick up passengers at local seniors residences by calling ahead: 778-321-0460.

Ask us how to Move For Free! Worry Free!
By Jennifer Lang The sharp scent of cedar sawdust filled the carpentry shop at Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Cloverdale campus last week, as teams set to work building wooden planter boxes for fun and prizes. The United Way Build Off involved eight teams of students and staff building planter boxes out of western red cedar during a special contest held in the shop. The lumber was donated by Southridge Building Supply, and the materials were cut and bundled into starter kits by carpentry students, instructor Al Rumpel said. The hour-long contest had participants measuring, hammering and sawing away, and

The finished planter boxes were auctioned off on Nov. 29, with proceeds to KPU’s 2013 United Way campaign.

cathedral being built, is still used for special communions. The monarch might be surprised at how fitting the name of his gift would become as centuries passed. Standing on the ancient wall, some of the murals painted by Bogside artists Tom and William Kelly clearly impact the tourists. McNulty, like all tour guides, pauses to explain their significance. He talks about the Bogside, Free Derry Corner, and streets that in our current history emphasized entrenched political and sectarian anger, pain, historic and family divisions and wounds. There is the “You Are Now Entering Free

Derry”, painted in 1969 after the Battle of the Bogside. One by one the murals are explained. Most – even from this distance – are chilling, thought provoking. But, one of a little girl is haunting. Annette McGavigan, the 100th victim of The Troubles, was the first child killed. She is im-
mortalized in The Death of Innocence mural. She was inadvertently killed by a bullet from a British soldier’s rifle on Bloody Sunday. As a mother, a grandmother, and just a caring human being, it depicts for me the futility of war. As McNulty said, “What in the world was it all about. It’s always the innocent who suffer.” The artists have indicated that by creating the murals their intentions were to tell the story, but also to offer a cathartic way of examining the past, and moving on to a better future. Without exception, everyone I met throughout Northern Ireland echoed similar sentiments. John McNulty reiterates that in

a video interview after the tour. Surprisingly, I was the lone foreigner on the tour. Eventually, it became tough to keep up with our guide since, in typically welcoming Irish fashion, people kept lingering to ask about me, or Canada! Equally problematic was, I was interested in their stories. Some were retired locals, others
had come for the weekend from other parts of Ireland to research their roots, and two board members in town for a “Children in Crossfire” conference wanted to share that information. Derry is walkable city. Easy to navigate, plenty to see, endless history, and – as with the rest of Northern Ireland – if in doubt, just ask a local. For example, taking

advantage of the free coffee included in the Martin Crossing tour I headed in to Java. By coincidence, a man at the table next to me turned out to be the editor of The Derry Journal. Not only did we share mutual concerns and views about the newspaper industry, he introduced me to local theatre people who happened to be passing. Suddenly I felt less like a stranger and more like a local. I wished I was staying longer to take advantage of their suggestions and invitations. Before heading for Brown’s in Town for dinner, I stopped at
the Tower Museum. Don’t miss wandering through here. The history you’d expect to see is well laid out, easy to navigate, and the section on The Troubles is where the guides will leave you to choose to interpret on your own. Derry, the key European shirt factory city before China entered the global market, was hosting a Shirt Factory Exhibition. Women were, of course, critical in this industry at the time. In the industrial red brick Shirt Factory building, the ghosts of the seamstresses – and an unbidden optimism – seemed to filter through. The exhibit was hoping for funding to continue. I hope they got it. It’s a part of Derry history worth noting. Driving across the river to the Everglades Hotel in the evening, John McNulty’s parting words echo: “I want to see Derry the number one tourist destination in Ireland. Not all debt is created equal – and not all debt is bad. In fact, you need some debt to establish a good credit rating. Being a responsible borrower means knowing which types of debt can help you reach your financial goals and which types leave you further behind. Good debt includes any investment or Feisal Panjwani, AMP purchase that helps improve your overall financial position. Mortgage loans are considered good debt because they offer low rates on property that appreciates in value over the long term. You also build equity as you pay down your mortgage. Borrowing to invest is also considered good debt. Often, the interest expense on money borrowed for investments is tax deductible. And when borrowing to maximize your RRSP, you’re investing in your future and benefiting from tax sheltered investment growth. Bad debt involves purchases where the value becomes lower than the original cost, and which can carry a high rate of interest, making them harder to pay off. Types of bad debt include high-interest credit card debt, car loans, deferred purchases, and cash advances. If you’re unsure about your debt situation, call us to set up a meeting. We can take you through your finances and advise how you can use your home equity to trade bad debt for smart debt, and give you some financial breathing room. The right refinancing package can help put an end to the monthly squeeze of too much credit card debt or too many loans, and help you get back into your financial comfort zone.

educator must be properly trained in teaching methods through an accredited program. Having the rank of Black Belt means a certain physical skill but has no Karen Bennett bearing on the ability to teach. At Cloverdale Black Belt Academy, instructors complete three levels of instructor training over a 3 to 5 year period before they are certified as an instructor. The training consists of regular weekly training classes in instruction along with a minimum of 300 hours of practical instruction. Each instructor candidate must attend three intense training camps where under the guidance of Master Instructors, they show their physical skill in martial arts, their skill in instruction and their knowledge of and ability to teach all required curriculum. At the camps, the instructor candidates are graded by a panel of Master Instructors to assure that they meet the highest quality standards before being officially certified to teach.

condo that is more space than what you need, it’s time to downsize. A smooth transition is possible, but not without good planning well in advance of the Edith Katronis move. First, if you sell your home what options are there for you and what size will your new home be?It is a daunting task to separate what you can take to a new property and what needs to be disposed of. Start early by checking what items you have that can be sold, given to family and friends or finally given away. Take family pictures off the wall and store in a big photo album or scrapbook. Keepsakes may need to be compacted or can be stored someplace where you still have access to them with family or friends. One client put one unwanted item on the road side every day for a month (subject to weather) and found the items were all taken away, saving them the task of moving them. I have many more tips and can help. Call us.

For your safety and the safety of other drivers, ICBC recommends winter tires for driving in snow and ice especially if you live in areas that normally receive a lot of snow. Why winter tires? All season or standard tires begin to lose their elasticity and grip on the road at temperature below 7 Celsius resulting in reduced traction. To assist you in controlling your vehicle in winter conditions, always install winter tires in sets of four only.

Holiday treats, decorations and food scraps are all tempting morsels for your canine or feline family member. These can cause obstruction, pancreatitis flare-ups and other even life-threatening conditions. Toxic festive plants include poinsettias, lilies and mistletoe, so be sure to keep these out of reach! Many foods that humans consider treats are very dangerous to our pets. Feeding fido leftover meat scraps can inflame the pancreas and cause abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea. Chocolate and cocoa are toxic to both dogs and cats and can cause seizures and heart arrhythmias. Even sugar free candy can contain xylitol which can lead to a life-threatening drop in blood sugar and liver failure. Holiday decorations and things like tinsel are dangerous for obvious reasons of obstruction and blockage but some also contain chemicals (as in bubble lights) that can irritate the eyes, skin and cause ulcers if chewed. Some small precautions will ensure that your pets have a safe and happy holiday….visit us for a large selection of SAFE and fun themed toys and treats.
