Expect a little magic at world’s narrowest building By Martha Perkins

agicians are known for being able to pull rabbits out of a hat so imagine what Rod Chow is going to be able to pull off at the world’s shallowest commercial building. The six-foot-wide, 100-foot-long Jack Chow Building runs along Pender Street from Carrall towards Columbia. It’s now covered by what the Chow family imagines as a very, very large magician’s cape so a $1-million renovation project can take place under a cloak of expectation. When the big Abracadabra! moment happens next spring and the cape disappears at the flick of a wand, they say that Vancouver is in for an “amazing revelation.” Just as the building, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, is in the Guinness Book of World Records as the “shallowest building”, Rod Chow might be the only insurance broker who doubles as a magician. (And no, he can’t make your premiums disappear.) “When I was a kid my parents took us on family vacations to Las Vegas and Reno,” Rod says of his early exposure to magic shows. “Back home, my dad hosted office parties and he needed entertainment; he was a juggler and I was a magician.” Today Rod will sometimes do a short magic trick for customers but he and his family — brother Reg

When the City of Vancouver expropriated the land to widen Pender Street, the owner was left with a six-foot wide parcel of property. Chow says there was a bit of racism at the time and the owner, Chang Toy of the Sam Kee Company, wasn’t fairly compensated. Toy had the last laugh, however, when

he accepted a business associate’s $10,000 bet and hired an architect to design the skinny, two-storey Sam Key Building that at one time housed up to 13 businesses, including a hot bath house in the tunnel that runs under the sidewalk. (Legend has it that the tunnel was an escape route from opium dens but Chow says that’s never been proven.) Jack Chow bought the run-down, worn-out building in 1985 and is using his retirement funds — along with a $100,000 Heritage Facade Grant from the City of Vancouver — to restore it. (Although another building has been built behind it, that building could be torn down and the Jack Chow Building would happily stand on its own.) “My dad has such a love of the building and we’re glad to be doing it as a family,” says Rod, who used to sleep under his parents’ desk at the office when he was a baby and is one of the believers in Chinatown’s economic future. During the renovation, Jack Chow Insurance has moved kitty corner to another building the family owns at 1 East Pender. One East Pender is also now home to the other branch of the business that used to be on Main Street. The family has plans to renovate this second heritage building but that will wait until after the magic happens across the street. Vancouver’s history, one day at a time By Martha Perkins

e can all be prone to a certain smugness when reading about the past. How quaint, how how old-fashioned, how backwards, we think. We are so much more evolved than that. Or are we? There are many surprises in Jesse Donaldson’s new book, This Day in Vancouver, which chronicles a noteworthy event on each calendar day in the city’s life over the past 125 years. The 365 days march on in proper order but the years skip back and forth: the entry for June 13 talks about the great fire of 1886 while on the next page we’re reminded of the June 14, 1994 Stanley Cup riots. One expects to read stories about racism, such as the April 11, 1903 account of a “joyous” headline proclaiming “no more Japanese will come here.”

After all, we like to think that racism — or any other negative kind of ism — is a thing of the past. But then Donaldson surprises us by writing about the November 17, 2001 beating death of a gay man. 2001? That wasn’t so long ago. And how could there have been a Klu Klux Klan rally in Vancouver as recently as October 17, 1980? (The 1920s KKK headquarters is now home to Canuck Place.) Of course, many of the entries are much more innocuous or have that patina of quaintness. Poet Pauline Johnson’s “wonderful elocutionary and dramatic prowess” wowed the crowd on October 21, 1897 while on October 11, 1957, the Vancouver Mounties were found guilty of the sin of playing professional baseball on the Lord’s Day (Sunday.) All of the stories are reminders that we should never forget the past, but also that the past is not as far back as we’d sometimes like to think. Small screen, big voice 14 years after her award-winning début album, vocalist turned morning TV personality Dawn Chubai releases Under the Covers By Sabrina Furminger

ancouver television audiences might not know that Breakfast Television’s Dawn Chubai is an award-winning jazz singer, and yet without her dynamite pipes, she might not be a TV personality at all. Back in 1999, Chubai was an up-andcoming jazz vocalist working Edmonton’s music scene. She’d just released her début CD, New Chapters for an Old Book — and garnered some pretty impressive acclaim, including the award for Best Jazz Artist from the Alberta Recording Industry Association. Performing meant constant promotion, and Chubai made frequent appearances on local television shows to sing her heart out and entice people to buy tickets to her gigs. But something about Chubai — perhaps her warm smile, or her swirl of energy, or her genuine interest in other people — caught the attention of an Edmonton station manager, who encouraged her to audition for a weather/traffic position. “I had no television experience at all, so I totally was brutal,” she recalls during a recent phone interview. But not so brutal: she got the job. Fast forward 14 years and it’s hard to believe there was ever a time when Chubai wasn’t in front of the camera. Today she’s well known as the amiable Live Eye host on Breakfast Television, but over the last 14 years, she’s kept her music career going as well with a steady stream of performances — including frequent gigs with leg-

endary band leader Dal Richards. “I’ve been out here [in Vancouver] going on 10 years and I have never stopped singing, but it’s still amazing to me when people who have been watching me on Breakfast Television the entire time go, ‘Oh, I didn’t know you sang,’” she says. But this is likely to change come January, when Chubai finally releases her sophomore album, entitled Under the Covers. “Time just got away from me, and all of the sudden, it’s 14 years later,” she says, laughing. Recorded in The Garage — a studio on the Sunshine Coast owned and operated by Larry Hennessey of Larry and Willy fame — Under the Covers features an eclectic mix of songs, including three originals, two of which were penned by Chubai herself. How eclectic? Among the 12 tracks is “To Love Somebody” by the BeeGees, which Chubai performs with a gospel twist; a dark version of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time”; a bossa nova spin on “All My Loving” by The Beatles; “Tennessee Whiskey” by Gary Moore; The Spinners’ “I’ll Be Around”; standards “Route 66”, “Come Rain or Come Shine,” and “Fly Me to the Moon.” “There’s lots of variety on there, but the songs somehow all fit together,” says Chubai, who describes her sound as funk- and country-flavoured jazz. “I just want them to sit there and go, ‘Man, oh, she did that song?! What a cool way of doing it.’” Under the Covers will go on sale in January, and in the interim, Chubai is releasing her take on the Mel Torme classic “The Christmas Song.” “It’ll really get people in the spirit,” she says. The Christmas Song will be available free of charge to anyone who signs up for Chubai’s newsletter before December 7. “People ask me periodically, ‘Do you wish you were just doing music, or, would you ever quit TV for music?’ I’m really lucky that I get to do both.”

ings and a sky full of rising towers are any indication, Canada’s largest cities are experiencing an unprecedented condo boom, a growth trajectory that has some expressing concern about the sustainability of the market. With more condominium construction in recent years than the market would appear to be able to absorb based on demographic trends alone, a new report by Royal LePage outlines the economic and social factors behind the enduring demand for this type of housing in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. In 2011, condos accounted for 14.9 per cent of total households in these markets, and 37.7 per cent of new dwellings. Growth continues, according to the report, with demand for new condos over the next 20 years estimated to be 26,000 to 32,000 new units per year, a significant 43 per cent to 53 per cent of total required housing across all housing types. While actual production currently exceeds this need with an average of 43,774 new starts per year, strong activity in condo markets has been generated by exceptionally low interest rates, robust job creation in central areas of cities, shifting consumer preferences and conditions that can make condo ownership an effective investment opportunity. According to the report, this strong activity “is not sufficient evidence of a housing bubble,” but rather the result of these positive economic forces and changes in demand patterns supportive of condominium living. “Condominiums have emerged as the dominant type of new housing in contemporary urban Canada, a trend that will not be reversed in the foreseeable future,” said Phil Soper, president and chief executive of Royal LePage. “In Canada’s major cities, the presence of highly visible, large-scale construction projects will continue to attract discussion. It’s important to note, that while the number of condominiums have increased significantly

In greater Vancouver, condo prices rose by 4.5% per year, versus 5.7% of single family homes. While some divergence may be expected in the near-term, the report suggests that condominiums will experience growth rates similar to single family homes over the long-term. Looking forward, the patterns of housing requirements depend on factors including population growth rate, its distribution by age groups and evolving consumer preferences. Over the next 20 years, the three major cities studied are projected to receive a modestly reduced share of the country’s population growth, as resource-producing regions attract proportionally more inmigration. This change, together with changing housing needs brought about by the aging baby boomer population are two important factors that point to moderating demand for new condos compared to recent levels of production. “The longer-term role of condos depends on several variables, including shifting demand patterns, pace of project completion and changes to mortgage rules,” states Will Dunning, housing market economist and author of the report. “In the housing market, demographics are not always destiny, and various factors including the appeal of amenity-rich urban living and delayed childbearing have increased condo demand. This helps greatly to explain why apartment activity has recently exceeded the so-called demographic requirement.” Finally, the longer-term impact of the changes to the federal government’s mortgage insurance policies is yet unknown. The revised rules have made access to financing more difficult, especially for first-time homebuyers, and this has the potential to affect the dynamics of the condo market.

New courier service zips into Vancouver Zipments.ca makes its début with MEC and Edible Canada By Martha Perkins

t’s not likely that you have a sudden need for a camping cookstove or new Khamsin hoodie. But there is a chance that instead of driving to a Mountain Equipment Co-op store you’d love to have that cookstove delivered to your home tonight after work. If you have plans to go, how about having it delivered to you at the café where you’ll be having lunch? But perhaps you want to make a little extra money. You might want to be the person who delivers the cookstove to a MEC customer in your neighbourhood. Welcome to the Zipments courier community. Zipments originated in New York but has been brought to Canada by Rob Safrata, a member of Mayor Gregor Robertson’s Greenest City Action Team. Zipments.ca went live for the first time last Wednesday in Vancouver and the North Shore. Right now it’s just business-to-consumer deliveries through two retailers — MEC and Edible Canada — but more business partners will be signing on in the new year. And, as the launch is rolled out, individuals will also be able to use Zipments.ca for their own courier needs. Making it work is an army of “lifestyle couriers” who can take on as many deliveries as they want, turning it into a full-, part-time or even occasional job. “It fits my lifestyle and allows me to participate in the shared economy,” says Tom Malcolm who deliv-

ered a zipments.ca package (from zipments.ca) to the WE Vancouver office. A recent MBA grad, he’s helping to launch the “delivery your way” service in Vancouver and also decides which courier jobs he’d like to do. He just checks his smartphone app to see what deliveries come up and if he’s available — and fast enough to beat another courier to it — clicks his acceptance of the job. Same-day delivery times can be fine-tuned to the half-hour from nine in the morning to nine at night. It’s the type of service MEC had been looking for, says the vicepresident of operations Gary Faryon. “Retailing has changed because the customer is now in charge,” he said in a telephone interview. Other couriers aren’t as nimble when it comes to where and when deliveries can be made. With Zipments, the customer is in charge, often texting directly with the courier. “Retailers have to embrace new technologies to compete,” Faryone says. Faryon’s glad his company can now offer same-day delivery as part of an omni-channel retailing model that can be more flexible and responsive. “Our members have never asked for same-day delivery but people’s time is limited so people look for different ways to cut things out of their schedule. One is to have [orders] delivered to their door,” he says. He likes that the consumer will be able to communicate directly with the courier and believes it’s a very social way of doing deliveries. MEC charges a $15 fee but that should eventually come down. He still expects to see many members still shopping in the store. “There’s something to be said for the experience” of touching and trying out the products, he says. “For some people it’s exciting and entertaining.”

Give Christmas cakes another chance Follow Me Foodie

his is a love it or hate it cake. Images of gross artificial cherries, fake candied fruit, and vibrant green jelly in a dense and hard “cake” doused in cheap quality rum, brandy, and overly sweet syrups automatically cross my mind when I hear the words Christmas cake. There are too many poor versions of this holiday staple. Growing up, I often associated any “dessert” with dried fruit as a “grandma dessert.” However, I try things until I like them, and since then I’ve found a few to get me on board. There are so many versions which vary for each country and region, so don’t write off Christmas cakes until you’ve tried them all.

Dark Fruitcake at Soirette Macaron & Tea It might not convince the Christmas cake hater, but this one is for those who have always enjoyed the British style version. Pastry chef Shobna Kannusamy’s dark Christmas cake is more on the traditional and expected side, but made with good quality ingredients, which really makes all the difference. The cardamom, pine nut, apricot and brandy dark fruitcake is packaged in a tin and sold as a stocking stuffer ($10). It’s not too sweet and the pine nuts are only on top, but the rest of the moist and rich cake is loaded with a variety of dried fruit (apricots, prunes, raisins to name a few) and hazelnut pieces. Christmas cakes are usually spiced with cinnamon, cloves and/or nutmeg, so the cardamom was a modern change which worked. It wasn’t overly spiced and cardamom was the most apparent. Light Christmas Cake at Bel Café This could convince a non-Christmas cake lover. Pastry chef Wayne Kozinko’s light Christmas cake is a bit closer to a German style Stollen. It is jam packed with candied orange, lemon peel, currants, sultanas, and golden raisins, but I could have used more almonds. It is soaked with dark rum, brandy and orange liquor finished with a sheet of marzipan ($15). By sticking to limited and generally liked dried fruit (which they candy in house) and fewer spices, it becomes more approachable to people who dis-

like the overwhelming amount of dried fruit and spices in most Christmas cakes. It’s not boozy, and, while the abundance of candied lemon and orange can get a bit repetitive, it is a Christmas cake that is easier to warm up to. 801 W Georgia | BelCafe.com

Stollen (German Christmas cake) at Thomas Haas Stollen is German style Christmas cake, which I prefer over the British and Commonwealth versions. I wrote a blog post called “Follow Me Foodie to the Stollen Smackdown!” where I blindly tried 18 Stollens in one sitting, and Thomas Haas took the cake. I look forward to it all year and freeze emergency slices to get me through desperate times. There were marginal differences with the Stollen from Four Seasons (very close runner up), and there is overlap in recipes. Haas worked with Stollen master Gerhart Weitzel at the Four Seasons before opening his own store. Panettone (Italian Christmas cake) at Fol Epi This is an Italian style Christmas cake much closer to a sweet bread. If you hate most Christmas cakes, try panettone which is softer, lighter and more like raisin bread. Fol Epi makes a stellar one. The Liberty Distillery adds spirit to Granville Island

Murder at the Juice Joint Swallow Tail’s holiday pop-up party comes with a twist. few hours after Liberty Distillery opened its doors on Granville Island last Friday, the long brass rail at the foot of its majestic mahogany bar was already well scuffed. Dozens of curious passersby had walked in, sidled up to the bar — built in 1890 for a saloon in Texas, it looks straight out of a Western movie —, put a foot on the rail and asked the bartender for a shot of the distillery’s first run: Truth Vodka. Although Liberty Distillery is not the first artisanal distillery to open in Vancouver, its owners were the first to put in an application. Five years ago, Robert Simpson, the founder of Liberty Wines, and his wife Lisa, a former international trade consultant with a background in culinary arts, never would have thought their quest to make hand-crafted spirits would have taken this long. Part of the challenge was turning a heritage building on federal lands into a distillery; the other was discovering that in fulfilling one city regulation, one more regulation seemed come into play. But none of this frustration was in evidence as Lisa gave the WE a tour on opening day. Instead, the shelves and tables were stocked with bartending gifts and paraphernalia, many of which cleverly branded Liberty Distillery, the Carl stills from Germany were burbling away under the watchful eye of master distiller Laurent Lafuente and bartenders Jason Laidlaw and Taylor Bartell were pouring vodka shots and answering questions. (Under the licence, they can’t sell you a sampling of their creations, but they can sell you a shotglass with a tasting sample in it.) The lounge licence, which has been approved, was not yet on display so on opening day the bartenders were not yet serving up Liberty Distillery’s

fter months of dialogue with retail, trade, consumers and other interested parties, the BC Liquor Policy Review report was handed in by by Kurtis Kolt Parliamentary Secretary John Yap with 70 recommendations on modernizing provincial liquor laws. It looks as though the contents of the report are going to be released on a slow and steady basis since, as I write this, we only know what one of those recommendations entails. Unless you have been living under a rock over the last week or so, you’re well aware via an onslaught of media coverage that the government are looking to offer liquor sales in grocery stores, a huge step that is purportedly all about convenience. What initially appears to be good news quickly deflates from where I’m sitting, as there are a few aspects of the official announcement that I find concerning. First off, it had been stated that three quarters of respondents, myself included, were in favour of this step. The thing is, everyone I’ve talked to imagined this looking like the American model, with an aisle (or part of an aisle) dedicated to wine, beer and spirit offerings. This is the convenience many had in in mind. That concept is kyboshed with the announcement that alcohol will be kept separate from grocery products, most likely a storewithin-a-store. Figuring most grocery stores are fairly close, if not adjacent, to liquor or wine and beer stores, this move really just saves a few footsteps. There will still be a completely separate transaction and step

when grabbing your wine for dinner. On top of this, and this is the big one for many, Yap recommends we keep the current cap on total retail outlets in the province. This either means closing some BC Liquor Stores or, perish the thought, independent retail outlets to create space for those in grocery stores. Your favourite wine store just a couple blocks away? It might not be there any more after this shift. That doesn’t sound more convenient to me. Also, there are way more grocery stores than liquor outlets in the province, so how will it be designated which stores will get the opportunity to carry alcohol? Since BC has almost 2,400 grocery stores and about 1,100 liquor outlets (and not all of those will be closing,) odds are your local grocery store might not end up carrying liquor anyway. For a major step that was supposed to be all about convenience, this really doesn’t seem to be thoroughly planned. While we’re long overdue to steer the ship towards modernization, my feeling is so far we’re just re-arranging deck chairs on the Titanic. Let’s brighten things up a little. Here’s a wine for your weekend.

Get it right Re: Right on the right (and the left), Rants, Nov. 28: If I recall the original writer’s rant about the unused, hilly, Comox bike way (greenway, lol) full of seasonal, waste, leaves and debris, it had nothing to do with the followup ranter’s introduction about actual rules of use. Regardless, Ed, you got it all wrong. It is not a one-way/ counterflow lane of any sort. Go on the City’s website and look at the actual pdf maps your self: the bike lane is a TWO WAY route, as per the arrows indicating this. It then, confusingly, becomes a one-way bike lane for a few blocks. Your imagination, and denial, reflect the populace that think that these poorly thoughtout, exclusive routes are a benefit to anyone cycling, walking or driving. Tell that to the commuter I witnessed yesterday travelling along Comox: biking gear, helmet, and riding along the sidewalk at full speed! BTW, if you are a pedestrian travelling at the terminus at Stanley Park, watch out: the greenway becomes a (designated) free-for-all for bikes and pedestrians, with no division, no white line, nothing. So when is the next election? LOL

Cyclists on Comox In response to Ed Djouceitte’s rant in response to mine about cyclists’ use of Comox St., my rant wasn’t anything to do with how they use it but about how hardly any of them do use it... and consequently what a waste of our tax money all the changes were. The main thrust of my rant was actually about not throwing even more of our tax dollars into Green Gregor’s totally flawed bike rental scheme but,

having said that, I’m sincerely grateful to Ed for the clarification of how Comox is now supposed to be used. But my question is this: if cyclists already can’t be bothered to obey the rules of the road (when was the last time that anyone saw a cyclist in the West End riding considerately, wearing a helmet and with any lights on their bike?), what are the chances of their bothering to use Comox as they’re supposed to? Cashing out This time of year is so confusing for me. I’m generally quite in tune with social etiquette and how things are done, but this time of year is especially tough. For example, on a Friday night when it is rainy, wet and cold outside and you are waiting to get in the bar — how much do you bribe a doorman on Granville? Only to be let inside to essentially drink with the bartender and the bored servers. As well, if my car is about to be towed and the tow

Do Not Call means you, Gregor Two nights in a row, including this evening, I was bothered with an unsolicited phone recording from promotion goons working for Gregor Robertson. I am on the National Do Not Call list. I have not asked for nor given this bozo permission to call my house. The frustrating thing was that it was almost impossible to lose this call. What if we were in the middle of a crisis and needed to call 911? Even though I kept hanging up the phone, the recording kept going on and on and on and on. I had this same problem in the past and called this individual’s office, asking to be removed from their phone marketing list. Obviously to no avail. or years now, eight-year-old McKenna Durbin and her family have gone to see The Nutcracker every Christmas, revisiting the surreal tale of Clara and her nutcracker doll who comes alive, leading an army of toy soldiers against the evil Mouse King — all of which may or may not have been a dream. And this Christmas won’t be an exception to the family tradition only this time, McKenna won’t be in the audience. She will actually be on the stage, playing two parts in Goh Ballet’s production at the Centre for the Performing Arts. When asked if she’s a bit nervous about appearing in her first major performance — and one of her favourites at that — the shy McKenna gives me an honest answer. “Yeah, a little bit,” she says. “Umm…” Her mother Toni laughs. “You’ll be great,” she says encouragingly to her daughter, who’ll play a party girl and a little angel. “She’s nothing if not determined and hard working.” The idea to audition came from McKenna’s grandmother when she noticed a call for auditions at last year’s performance. “I told McKenna that she could be up there next year because I danced as a little girl and I was in many shows,” says Granny Pat, who lives in the UK. “I was very impressed with the Goh Ballet’s interpretation. It was the best version that I had ever seen.” “So come May,” Toni adds, “McKenna said she wanted to audition and she got the part.” Now in its fifth year, this year’s production of Goh Ballet’s Nutcracker was slightly uncertain after

Bale sizzles in gritty Rust Belt drama Out of the Furnace

Ken Marino’s inner demon takes the form of Milo, an E.T.-like creature that goes places, really icky places, to quench his bloodlust.

This is the furthest thing from a metaphor!” bellows Duncan (Ken Marino), this horror-comedy’s understandably exasperated protagonist as his therapist (Peter Stormare) tries to ascribe greater significance to his unenviable predicament. Indeed, while it’s clear that director Jacob Vaughan harbours some modest allegorical aspirations — the said “trooper in (Duncan’s) pooper” is seemingly a manifestation of his insecurity concerning impending fatherhood (making this a cheeky scatological riff on Rosemary’s Baby) — this grotesque romp hinges entirely on the high-concept premise of a pint-sized id monster taking up residence in some poor sap’s colon and occasionally bursting out to wreck havoc on those who’ve wronged its host. Fortunately for fans of comic gore,

Duncan’s acute gastrointestinal issues are but one aspect of this repressed office drone’s constant emasculation, resulting in frequent opportunities for Milo — as the creature is dubbed — to quench his bloodlust (including laying waste to one tormentor’s bathing suit area in a scene you’ll never be able to unsee). While never quite living up to promise of its Evil Dead-indebted kinetic opening or providing sufficient material for supporting players Patrick Warburton and Gillian Jacobs, Bad Milo! nevertheless proves both funnier and more involving than it has any right to be. Despite resembling an off-brand E.T. toy with a lamprey’s maw, Milo is disarmingly endearing, certain to inspire nostalgia in viewers who were raised on the charming practical effects and puppetry that graced the likes of Gremlins. Starring Christian Bale, Woody Harrelson Directed by Scott Cooper The economic struggles of the modern US Rust Belt clash with family loyalty in Scott Cooper’s searing drama Out of the Furnace. Steel worker Russell Baze (Bale) spends his days working a blue collar job and caring for his terminally ill father while holding down a relationship with a local teacher (Zoe Saldana). Russell’s brother Rodney Thor Diakow (Casey Affleck) returns home after serving overseas in the military only to be lured into a dangerous underground street fighting ring led by the positively malevolent Curtis DeGroat (Harrelson). Out of the Furnace features several top notch performances and is a gripping experience for the most part but ultimately fails to develop its complex themes satisfyingly. Bale displays some of the best dramatic work of his career, sometimes conveying a wide range of emotions without uttering a single word. Harrelson is downright terrifying and makes a formidable villain, Willem Dafoe shines as the local crime boss while veteran Sam Shepard is sorely underused as Russell and Rodney’s wise and weathered uncle.

For the most part, things moves along well as tensions escalate and bonds are tested yet the film’s climax dispenses with any sort of subtlety and succumbs to the standard revenge flick formula. Scott Cooper, whose first feature was Crazy Heart, displays enormous talent as a director; equipped with a keen sense of shot composition and understanding of how to get the most from his actors. The filmmaker has crafted a worthy addition to the genre here, even if it doesn’t quite deliver.

We imported it from California and have put quite a few kilometres on it. But, we needed something that was bigger, had more trunk space, was preferably a diesel and could make it through the snow. So, the hunt began. It actually began in December of 2012. The better half and I went looking for an SUV. It didn’t matter if it had five or seven seats. We preferred a diesel but were not excluding gasoline options. The first place we went to was the Mercedes-Benz dealership. The ML350 Bluetec was in a new generation and something we were interested in. However, with the options we wanted and a three-month wait time, the price was out of our range and the wait was too long. Then we looked into the Mazda CX-9. Granted, it’s not a diesel but a classy car and one that’s nice to drive. Again, the Ford Explorer Sport was not diesel, but a strong contender, alhough, the fuel economy wasn’t as stellar as we had hoped. We had spent the better part of a road trip in an Acura MDX in 2013 but wanted to wait until 2014 for the all-new version. After taking that for a spin, that was top three on the list. We also fancied the Volvo XC90 and the Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel. With all these great options, it was hard to narrow it down. But there was one that we had still not looked at. That was the 2014 VW Touareg TDI. It wasn’t hard to fall in love with it. It fit everything we were looking for. The Touareg was within our price range, it had a generous cargo capacity, allwheel drive (for our various trips up the mountain) and best of all, a diesel engine.

I’m a huge supporter of alternatives to gas-powered vehicles, whether that’s diesel, electric or hybrids. It only seemed fitting to welcome this type of beautiful machine into our home. Upon recommendation from a colleague, we went to Gold Key VW in Langley where our sales rep, John Nielsen, was fabulous. Upon entry into the dealership, we knew exactly what we wanted. He joked with us that we were making his job very easy. We said we can make it difficult if he wanted! We didn’t. The whole process was anything but painful. In fact,

it was very pleasant. It seemed as though the other clients of the dealership were also experiencing the same thing. And from what I’ve heard from readers who have emailed me about the car buying process, it is becoming more enjoyable for many people. I’m happy to hear that. With our new addition to the family and smiles on everyone’s faces, we couldn’t be happier.
