Linking Names and Places
The name Comaplix is derived from a Sinixt word greg Nesteroff West Kootenay Advertiser
Thirty-ninth in a series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names. Comaplix is one of the few First Nations names still on
the local map — but it hasn’t always been recognized as one. The northeast arm of Upper Arrow Lake was once home to a Sinixt village called nk’mapeleks, meaning “head of lake,” although its precise
location is uncertain. Explorer James Turnbull, who travelled through the area in 1865, referred to the valley as Illcom-oplaux while engineer Walter Moberly called it Incumappleux.

Gilbert Malcolm Sproat, writing in his 1884 Report of Kootenay Country, referred to the Nincom-ap-a-lux arm. By 1897, the anglicized version Incomappleux (also spelled Incomapleux and Incommapleux) was applied to the body of water that flowed into the lake, although it was also commonly known as the Fish River. Compalix is another anglicization of the same word — although its spelling led some sources to mistakenly believe it was of French origin. The Revelstoke Herald of June 8, 1901 dismissed this notion: “The little town of Comaplix derives its somewhat bizarre appellation from the Indian name of Fish River …” The first reference to the Comaplix townsite, although not by name, was in Revelstoke’s Kootenay Mail of August 8, 1896: “J.A. Magee of the Kootenay Lumber Co. has a crew of men engaged in clearing a new town-

site at the mouth of Fish Creek.” Thomas H. Parr surveyed the townsite on the north side of the northeast arm on June 21, 1897. The avenues were Osoyoos, Slocan, Kootenay, Okanagan, and Chemainus, and the streets were Water, Front, Main, Cedar, and Pine. Lardeau and Somenos streets were subsequently added. An application for a post office was filed on February 4, 1897
(the earliest use of Comaplix), but for some reason it didn’t open. The Revelstoke Herald of February 27, 1897 said: “The sawmill on the Arm is soon to get a post office to be known as Comapie [sic].” (It took the Herald until April 3 to get the name right.) Following a second application, the post office opened on December 15, 1899 and closed July 15, 1915. Comaplix flourished as a sawmilling
town until a suspicious fire levelled the mill, town, and SS Revelstoke in 1915. No one lived there by the time the area was flooded by construction of the Hugh Keenleyside dam. The now-abandoned spot is accessible mainly by boat and is home to one of the most remote and evocative cemeteries in West Kootenay. The name survives in Comaplix Creek and Comaplix Mountain.

Downtown Trail no longer a bumper to bumper experience VALERIE ROSSI West Kootenay Advertiser
Shoppers may be drawn once again to Trail’s downtown now that major infrastructure upgrades are complete along Victoria Street and traffic is no longer an issue. Harvie Hurd of Gordon Wall’s Windows and Floors, located on Victoria Street, said business has picked up once again. “There were periods when it was slow really due to the construction and I don’t know if it was so much during the paving as it was when they were doing the initial sidewalks,” he said. “The paving, I felt, went really quickly.” For much of the late summer and into early November, a once quiet commute was bumper to bumper as infrastructure improvements and paving ensued. Andrea Jolly, Trail’s communications and events coordinator, said there is a sense of relief now from drivers. “Now that construction has concluded on Victoria Street, traffic is flowing smoothly,” she said. “There are still some motorists getting used to the
pedestrian bump-out curbs installed at the side streets.” The bump-outs are meant to slow traffic down as motorists turn at and approach intersections, provide a more visible location for pedestrians, and reduce the crossing distance for pedestrians. The city has now turned its attention to beautifying the main street that runs through Trail by erecting three pillars along Pine, Cedar and Bay avenues.
“Now that construction has concluded on Victoria Street, traffic is flowing smoothly.” Andrea Jolly The 16-foot minor gateways will be mounted on four-foot granite bases with lighting features highlighting the street names when all said and done. Phase 1 of Trail’s $1.6 million Victoria Street Corridor project is now complete. The city has received more
than $150,000 toward footing the bill with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure injecting $125,000 into the revitalization project by completing paving along the highway through the downtown corridor and ICBC contributing $28,400. “Road improvements deliver real value to everyone from drivers to pedestrians,” ICBC’s road safety engineer Dave Dean told the Times this month. “The city’s grant is part of ICBC’s cost sharing opportunities for its road improvements program.” The next phase of the downtown revitalization plan projected to start in 2014 includes two major gateway features at the entrance of the Victoria Street Corridor. Jolly describes these as “larger, more elaborate (pieces with a) semi-arch feature on them.” Street-scape greening and landscaped medians along Victoria Street are part of the Phase 2 leg of downtown improvements, although the funding and scope of the project has yet to be approved by council. -With files from Sheri Regnier

Two-tiered rec fees to stay timothy schafer West Kootenay Advertiser
The segregation between Rossland and the rest of the world will continue at the Greater Trail Aquatic and Leisure Centre. The Trail-based facility won’t be getting rid of its two-tiered payment system, according to a recommendation in the Silver City’s newly released 10-year recreation plan. Called the Trail Parks and Recreation Plan, the plan still supports keeping the Trail Resident Program (TRP). After regional funding for recreation was dissolved in 2008, Rosslanders were required to pay twice as much as anyone else—no matter what locale—to use Trail’s recreation facilities. Rosslanders can buy into the TRP, however, they are charged $1,000 to use facilities at a family rate for one year— twice the amount for anyone else. In June of 2012 the City of Rossland had asked its residents for
their view on the city making financial contributions through property taxation for the use of the aquatic centre. As it turned out, the city’s residents voted against a rise in taxation to cover the recreation fees. Currently, Rosslanders pay a non Trail Resident Program fee, double what residents holding a valid card would shell out for daily, monthly or annual usage fees. In October, 2011, Trail requested Rossland pay $1 million over five years towards funding the aquatic centre and Haley Park, while Rossland countered with an offer of $35,000 the first year, and an adjusted rate based on usage after that. That offer is no longer on the table, nor has Rossland council been able to come up with a number they would find palatable. Under the notes of the plebiscite, if the City of Rossland were to agree to pay the City of Trail $100,000 per year on behalf of the Rossland residents
for use of the aquatic centre, a typical tax impact on a $300,000 assessed home would be $55 per year. That would increase to $82.50 for the same home if Rossland negotiated a higher figure of $150,000. In 2010, the City of Trail was looking for an average of $188,000 annually over five years from Rosslanders to access the facilities. That was almost as much as the city’s residents paid in taxes to maintain their own recreation facilities and programs. According to Trisha Davison, Trail’s director of parks recreation, the two-tier system should be abolished, but it won’t until Rosslanders step up to the tax table. “We all agree, we’d love to see two-tiered system be gone recognize that unless there’s regional support for recreational services, then it’s virtually impossible if we expect service to remain as they are,” she told the Trail Times. editor@rosslandnews.com

Grocer, Sensible BC petitioners at odds
Ferraro Foods is offering an apology to customers and canvassers who may have felt uncomfortable following an incident in front of its store late last month. Petitioners for the Sensible BC campaign were near the store collecting signatures for its petition for the Sensible Policing Act to decriminalize marijuana possession on Nov. 23. Ferraro Foods asked the canvassers to move when customers made complaints about the canvassing. A video on Sensible BC’s Facebook page and YouTube captures storeowner Danny Ferraro saying “we’re asking everybody to ignore them” while he greets customers, in some instances standing between the customers and a canvasser. Now Sensible BC is looking into pursuing legal action, pointing to the Recall and Initiative Act.
Parking dollars disclosed
A new parking system in Trail has led to an additional 1,000 violation tickets being issued this year compared to 2012. “With respect to tickets issued in 2013, to date we issued 7,856 tickets compared to 6,838 in 2012,” said Michelle McIsaac, the city’s corporate administrator. “This is recognizing that we had a two-month period without a parking meter attendant that could account for part of that difference.” At the Nov. 12 meeting, McIsaac reviewed her report of operations and bylaw enforcement that included further details about the new parking management system. To date, total revenues associated with parking operations are just above $300,000, compared to $270,000 in 2012. Overall, the city pulled in over $180,000 from meter revenue, fines and tickets, and parking fees since January, compared to $155,000 in 2012. during the same time period.

Trail – Community donors, elected officials and local dignitaries joined the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital (KBRH) Health Foundation and Interior Health at a recent open house to celebrate the new digital stereotactic diagnostic mammography service, as well as other diagnostic imaging improvements at the regional hospital. The Foundation received a total of $795,000 in donations for the new digital mammography program, from donors large and small. “The great work our clinicians do for people in this region continues to be acknowledged through the incredible generosity of local residents and the dedication of the KBRH Health Foundation,” said Norman Embree, IH Board Chair. “These partnerships continue to support Interior Health in providing quality care to our local com-
munities.” “In our 25th anniversary year, the KBRH Health Foundation is very proud to bring digital stereotactic mammography to KBRH,” said Lisa Pasin, Director of Development, KBRH Health Foundation. “The Digital Mammography Campaign raised $795,000 in 22 months, due to the generosity and commitment of our donor groups, which included corporations, service clubs, auxiliaries and individuals. With completion of the campaign, we are supporting patients and families who live and work throughout the Kootenay Boundary by providing the gold standard of medical imaging right here in our community.” The event also celebrated other investments including a new ultrasound machine and ultrasound stretcher, a new 64-slice CT scanner, CT scan and MRI work stations, a cardiac ultrasound computer system, and other equipment.

This year the staff and management of Interfor again made a contribution to the Boundary Food Bank. Ryan Weltz, Silviculture Forester at Interfor’s Grand Forks mill, toured the facility on Tuesday, Nov. 26 and presented a cheque for $2,000. “This is really appreciated,” said Larry Dickerson, Food Bank president. “We are all volunteers, and to provide food for the record numbers we are seeing this year, we rely on the generosity of businesses and individuals.” “Donations of food or money are welcome year-round, and right now we sure could use a few more volunteers,” added volunteer coordinator Don Todd. I supported photo radar initially because when used in high-collision locations, elsewhere in the world, it has a remarkable record for reducing death and injuries. It never operated that way in BC and soon became public enemy number one where it was perceived as merely a cash cow for greedy provincial government. YourInsights.ca is Insights West’s in-house access panel offering on-demand samples for both clients and research suppliers looking for Western Canadian populations. The data has been statistically weighted according to Canadian census figures for age and gender. While statistical margins of error are arguably not applicable to online panels/online studies of this nature, we have assumed that the same margins of error apply as if it were a true unweighted random probability sample with a margin of error of +/- 3.4 percentage points, nineteen times out of twenty. The 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 is a stylish price buster By Zack Spencer
The Mercedes CLA 250 is here and it is a cause for celebration. This stylish compact car is powerful, filled with all kinds of features and starts at an amazing $33,900. What this means for the entire car market is a trend towards more car for less money. If Mercedes Benz can sell such a competent car for so little, the pressure will be on non-premium brands to sharpen their pencil, add more features, and revise their prices lower. Mercedes already has a very affordable hatchback with the B250, which arrived about a year ago and is the basis for this CLA. Both of these cars open up Mercedes Benz to a new market of buyers who might have been thinking about buying a non-premium brand but now realized a CLA is within reach. This, along with Mercedes strong resale value will help to keep lease rates low, amplifying the value this car offers. Looks Mercedes helped create the “coupe” 4-door sedan several years ago with the CLS sedan, which is based on the E-Class sedan. By dropping the roof, raking the front and rear windows and adding a more aggressive front end, produces an eye-catching sedan that looks classy and aggressive at the same time. Mercedes has taken this formula and applied it to the B-Class platform to

produce this coupe-like sedan. The base model comes with 17-inch wheels but the sport package is great value, at $1,600, which adds 18-inch AMG wheels and extra AMG exterior trim pieces. The side windows are slim as is the back window for limited outward visibility, not so much for the driver but the rear seat passengers, especially kids. Inside One trend I’m not sure I like is placing a screen in the centre of the dash, like putting an iPad Mini in the permanently placed in middle of the dash. It doesn’t look particularly polished, almost like an afterthought. Audi’s new A3 sedan, arriving in March, has the ability to lower their screen, which I think is a better approach. The premium package is a must because it includes a huge panoramic sunroof, backup camera, automatic climate control and heated front seats; all of
this for $2,800. This is a small car; the roof feels very low and back seat passenger’s needs to be children or shorter adults. Rear seat outward visibility is limited and legroom is also at a premium. Drive The launch event for this new CLA was held in the Washington DC area, leaving historic Georgetown and heading towards Maryland’s ports and navel academy. This provided some excellent stop-and-go traffic opportunities in Washington’s morning rush hour and then getting to stretch the new CLA’s legs on fabulous Interstate highways. The power plant is a direct injection turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with a healthy 208hp. The power goes through a 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission to the front wheels. The more expensive and powerful 355hp CLA 45 AMG has an all wheel drive (AWD) system as standard equipment but the base CLA 250 will get this important option sometime in 2014. Power is fantastic, especially if the transmission is placed in the sportier mode. This car cruises effortlessly at highway speeds and passes with ease. All CLA models come with a Collision Prevention Assist feature that alerts the driver to the possibility of an impending collision. Verdict We are heading into a wonderful period of lower priced cars, or
vehicle fitted with more standard features. This new CLA 250 is a perfect example of this. Other new entries
include the latest A3 that arrives in March and starts at $31,100 and then the new BMW 1 Series will arrive in
about a year. For the price of a well-equipped non-premium brand Canadians can now get a premi-
um German sedan for about the same price.

Alexandra does some car shopping for herself... for once By Alexandra Straub
The following three questions are probably what I’m asked most often when someone finds out about my line of work. • What is my favourite car? • What car would I buy if I had an unlimited amount of money? • Do you watch Top Gear? I can’t really say what my favourite car is because there are many I love. Whether it’s a subcompact (Fiat 500 Turbo) to a supercar (Bentley Continental GT Speed Coupe), there are just so many good ones to choose from.
Let’s skip to question three. Yes, I do watch Top Gear and am thoroughly entertained by it. Any car lover would be. And who wouldn’t fall in love with the British accent? Addressing question number two: What car would I buy if I had an unlimited budget? Well, at this point in my life, that’s not the case. I have yet to win the lottery. But I can refine the question to, if I had to buy a vehicle for my family, what would it be? Currently, we’re the owners of a 2001 VW Cabrio. We imported it from Southern California and

have put quite a few kilometres on it. But, we needed something that was bigger, had more trunk space, was preferably a diesel and could make it through the snow. So, the hunt began. It actually began in December of 2012. The better half and I went looking for an SUV. It didn’t matter if it had five or seven seats. We preferred a diesel but were not excluding gasoline options. The first place we went to was the Mercedes-Benz dealership. The ML350 Bluetec was in a new generation and something we were
interested in. However, with the options we wanted and a three month wait time, the price was out of our range and the wait was too long. Then we looked into the Mazda CX-9. Granted, it’s not a diesel but a classy car and one that’s nice to drive. Again, the Ford Explorer Sport was not diesel, but a strong contender. Though, the fuel economy wasn’t as stellar as we had hoped. We had spent the better part of a road trip in an Acura MDX in 2013 but wanted to wait until... continued on page C11

Talking about some of the most macho classic cars ever By Rob Sass
We have no desire to wade into the minefield that is the eternal “chick car vs. dude car” argument. But it’s self-evident that the cars on this list most definitely have a “Y” chromosome. In fact, they positively ooze testosterone: 1. 1966-67 Shelby Cobra 427: Many people aren’t aware of the fact that the fire-breathing Cobra actually started out as
a rather delicate British sports car, the AC Ace. Carroll Shelby saw the potential, installed a 260-cubic-inch Ford V-8, and it was good. But a 427-cubic-inch NASCAR engine was even better along with side-pipes and fat fenders. Performance was blistering and so was the noise. 2. 1970-71 Plymouth Hemi ‘Cuda: The new Mopar E-body forever broke the association with the old economy Valiant, and
the Barracuda and its stablemate, the Dodge Challenger, were low, wide and particularly menacing. The 426 Hemi V-8 made it one of the baddest of all time. 3. 1968 Corvette L88: This is the Corvette that ordinary civilians weren’t supposed to be able to buy. It was designed for the track at a time when GM was observing an official racing ban. L88s had no creature comforts (not even a heater)
and overheated in the briefest of traffic jams. To further discourage non-racers, GM underrated the horsepower of the 427-cubic-inch engine, reporting it at around 400 hp. In reality, it was well over 500 hp. 4. 1969-73 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 “Daytona”: The Ferrari Daytona was one of the last V-12 front-engine Ferrari GTs that Enzo Ferrari personally had a hand in. For almost every year it was in
production, it was the fastest road car available in the U.S. with a top speed of more than 172 mph. Racer Dan Gurney and journalist Brock Yates won the infamous cross-country Cannonball Run in a Daytona going coast-to-coast in just under 36 hours. All of the controls from the ultra-heavy clutch to the unassisted steering are like a workout machine set on maximum resistance. 5. 1976-89 Porsche

2014 Range Rover Sport By Ian Harwood
After seeing many old Range Rovers around navigating the back roads and how bulky and cumbersome they look as they spin out rocks attempting a hill climb or how the passengers seem to be bouncing around uncontrollably on what appears to be a very basic interior, I found myself thinking there must be some kind of special group of people that are attracted to this vehicle. Fast forward to today’s version of the Range Rover and you will find an outstanding front end that is easily recognized with the signature grille and projector style headlights. The trend setting side vents on the front fenders that’s is found on other vehicles and copied by the aftermarket. The large rear glass panels that extend up into the roof line making the overall appearance very clean looking and unique. The engine is a 510 horsepower, supercharged 5.0 litre V8 that puts out 461 lb-ft of torque @2500 RPM with a 6 speed automatic transmission. This transmission features Command Shift that actively responds to your driving habits and road conditions by reconfiguring the shift patterns for optimum drivability in all situations and is mated with a two speed electronically controlled transfer case. Four wheel electronic traction control, hill descent control, and four corner air suspension with terrain response not only makes this vehicle maneuver well on the road but can take you on some of the roughest back roads British Columbia has to offer. The terrain response system gives the Range Rover outstanding off-road capabilities, it adapts the response of the vehicles engine, transmission, centre coupling and chassis system to the terrain you’re driving on. It also maintains driver comfort as well as maximizing traction. Terrain response works continuously, but the driver can change the setting depending on

the terrain conditions, for example: mud and ruts, snow, or sand. Hill descent control automatically controls and restricts the speed downhill, using anti-lock brake system, and improves driver control on slippery descents. My first impression after climbing into the cab was of disbelief. I did not expect that level of comfort. The sight lines are amazing and the blind spot was almost non-existent. The rear seats had plenty of room for adults and the cargo area was adequate. The heated leather wrapped steering wheel featured all the controls one needed to operate the equipment without distraction. The front and rear seats are heated. Power tilt/slide front sunroof and a large glass roof over the rear seats allow plenty of natural light in. It is top shelf quality thru and thru. Range Rover has a long history of making safe vehicles, and the Sport model is no exception. Driver and passenger front airbags are designed to provide head and chest protection, and the front seat side airbags protect against side impacts. There is also a full length curtain airbag to help reduce potential of head injury and roll over ejection for front and rear passengers. Inflatable knee bolster helps protect the driver against leg injury from the steering column. 2014 for the all-new version to come out. After taking that for a spin, that was top three on the list. We also fancied the Volvo XC90 and the Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel.
IS WINDING DOWN Ends MONDAY December 9th PLUS, SIGN & DRIVE LEASES AND LOYALTY & TRUCK BUCK REBATES 2014 VW Toureg TDI
With all these great options, it was hard to narrow it down. But there was one that we had still not looked at. That was the 2014 VW Touareg TDI. It wasn’t hard to fall in love with it. As a VW owner, it’s something I should have thought about right away but for some reason didn’t. Regardless, testing it out fit everything we were looking for. The Touareg was within our price range, it had a generous cargo capacity, all-wheel drive (for our various trips up the mountain) and best of all, a diesel engine. I’m a huge supporter of alternatives to gas-powered vehicles, whether that’s diesel, electric or hybrids. It only seemed fitting to welcome this type of beautiful machine into our home. Upon recommendation from a colleague, we went to Gold Key VW in Langley where our sales rep, John Nielsen, was fabulous. Upon entry into the dealership, we knew exactly what we wanted. He joked with us that we were making his job very easy. We said we can make it difficult if he wanted! We didn’t. The whole process was anything but painful. In fact, it was very pleasant. It seemed as though the other clients of the dealership were also experiencing the same thing. And from what I’ve heard from readers who have emailed me about the car buying process, it is becoming more enjoyable for many people. I’m happy to hear that. With our new addition to the family and smiles on everyone’s faces, we couldn’t be happier. We’ve also driven almost 2,000 kilometres in the first two weeks of having the Touareg TDI at home and have only filled the tank twice. Even better! alexandra.straub@driveway.bc.ca

Self-appointed speed cops are danger to themselves and everybody else on the road. We’ve all seen them in action: they stick themselves in the centre lane at the speed limit and will not move over to let anybody pass. It promotes impatience and frustration which leads to smashes. Rich Cultural Curriculum on Parade at Brilliant Centre jim sinclair WKA Editor
Preserving a unique cultural heritage is only one of the benefits of the Russian/English bilingual program which is taught at Twin Rivers Elementary School in Castlegar. The historical significance of the Russian Doukhobor influence in this area is well known, but maybe not so well known is the 30-year run of the bi-lingual schooling at Twin Rivers. With this year marking the completion of the third decade, a big show was staged this past Sunday night at the Brilliant Cultural Centre just across the river from Castlegar. Friends and family packed the place as a concert was carried out by a wide variety of performers. Twin Rivers principal Peter Evdokimoff informed that the event is not an annual one, but

staged every 2-3 years. The relative rarity ensures the special nature of the gala. With more than 200 youngsters taking part in the enriching program, there was guaranteed to be a lot of talent on hand for the Sunday night show. All stages of development were on display as kids from kindergarten to grade 12 (including the Stanley Humphries Russian Choir) showed their stuff. Time involved in this course of study is well-
spent, for more reasons than one, explained Evdokimoff prior to the event. “Two of the top-ten world languages are English and Russian,” he related. “And it’s an asset to have a second language. The global, so-called, village has come about and anywhere you travel, especially outside of Canada, Russian is quite widespread.” The concert featured those taking part in either of two courses: Russian Language Studies and
Russian as a second language. More than 700 were in attendance for the event. According to Evdokimoff the program has achieved “wide recognition nationally and internationally.” A similar program has since been instituted in Northern Alberta and has been underway for about ten years. “We’ve been the pioneer in this area,” said the principal. “”All levels, classes are usually reasonably full.” The December 1 event

made a significant impression on many, including J.J. Verigin of the Union of Spiritual Communities of Christ. “The concert was wonderful with great performances by all from the youngest to the oldest. The Russian language skills of the students, their colourful costumes, and the cultural entertainment they presented with the assistance of their teachers was thoroughly enjoyed by all present,” said Verigin via email. “We sincerely thank the administration of Koo-
tenay Columbia School District # 20, its Superintendent and Trustees, school administrators and teachers, parents for Russian, and students at Twin Rivers and Castlegar Primary for an amazing concert. “We congratulate them on thirty years of sustaining an important program that widens cultural perspectives and career opportunities for our local students, and will continue to provide human, financial, material and other support for their efforts.”

the mid summer’s heat. Or will it actually survive the turn and produce an electrical reaction producing an electrical discharge or coronal mass ejection (CME) because it is actually made of rock and ore and not simply of ice and dirt? Woven within this question is a heated debate not just among factions of astronomers, but between cosmologists who are focused on the bigger questions like the origin of the universe and its deeper secrets like that of gravity. If the challengers presenting new cosmological theories, which includes the notion that the entire galaxy at least, and possibly even the entire universe, is both electrically charged and functions as one grand unified field, are correct, not only might there be a powerful discharge from the Sun, but Comet Ison will survive and moreover will reappear in the skies over the coming weeks. Of further interest yet, or concern, is the prospect that Ison will bring with it meteor showers which could prove quite dramatic as our planet passes through its tail. So far, nobody really seems to know. Either way, Ison is capturing the imagination of people the world over…. Stay tuned…

A new level of confidence is on the rise, as if suddenly. This uplifting emotion is awakening you to new perceptions and they in turn are inspiring. Still, you have to do the work. No amount of insight, inspiration and/or prediction… is enough to take the action for you. Proactive by nature you of all people know this. Nurture your visions decisively. A recent shift to the deep end of things has begun. This may have a sobering effect. It should also increase and accelerate your scope of ‘things-to-do’. This is all in tune with a growing commitment to new strategies for the future. It is extra important that you give more fully to situations. But you are wise to call upon others for assistance as well. A big turn in your relationship life has already begun. The good news is that it stands to bring in equally big returns. You may still not be sure where exactly you belong or fit best. Yet, you have likely made some very sincere efforts over the past couple of months. These have included digging deeper than you have for some time. P.S. Prayers do help. A growing level of enthusiasm and determination is rising in you. This is consequently producing increased energy levels, drive and a sharpened focus. You want new tools, techniques and approaches. As well, you are opening to new people and possibilities. Sober and practical, this is hardly a time to be frivolous. Break through to higher ground. You have entered a very creative cycle. Since your ambition levels have been running high, this has practical implications as well as inspirational. Yet, you must be willing to give more than you might usually to get the most out of it. This means time management. Faith in you, others and the spirit too will contribute to the success of this journey. Some pretty big moves close to home are shaking things-up. These include social activity like visits. Perhaps you are investing into new furniture, equipment or tools. Somehow you feel inspired to add to your overall foundation. Creating a more uplifting atmosphere and/or increased efficiency is motivating your focus.

Circumstances of late are pushing you to cover a lot of ground and quickly. Yet you may feel reluctant, in fact escapist. Your ability to concentrate is there but your resolve may not be. Unless you make a concerted effort to confront the inner resistance, some opportunities and perhaps obligations will be pushed aside. Direct your focus to home and family for best results. What was a tumble a short while ago is gaining speed, momentum, volume and gravity. Your sights are set on the future and your plans are growing steadily by the day. This includes entering new territory, literally as well as psychologically. You may be required to wear more than one hat, to assume a variety of rolls and tasks. The ‘old you’ is progressively melting away. This includes who you are and how you have expressed yourself over the years. The time has come to assume new perspectives and try new approaches. Giving more to situations or at least giving differently may be part of the deal. Aim to empathize more fully with people and situations to see with new eyes. You may feel moved to take time out, or at least work behind the scenes, or simply lay low. Key communications with other power players, however, remains important. As well, you are eager to both get to the bottom of things and to push through any resistances. While these may be in the form of certain people, your own habitual perspectives may require revision. New philosophies are coming in to play. They are slowly but surely producing changes in your approach to relationships and partnerships in general. An increase in knowledge is also indicated and stands to increase your personal power, confidence and sense of leadership. Trust and work with this process as it will activate inner powers and reveal hidden beauty. You have entered a cycle that has the potential to increase your public and professional exposure and confidence. It will continue into 2014. At worst, you will feel moodier than usual. Your willingness to work cooperatively with others is extra important. This includes participation in social and cultural activities. Take an executive approach.

Hockey’s game-changing play turns 100 Greg nesteroff West Kootenay Advertiser
The introduction of the forward pass in hockey is widely acknowledged as a turning point in the game — probably the most important rule change ever. But that certainly wasn’t the consensus at the time, according to Craig Bowlsby in 1913: The Year They Invented the Future of Hockey. The author of two previous books about early hockey in BC, The Knights of Winter and Empire of Ice, Bowlsby suggests freeing up the puck’s movement offended the era’s sense of propriety. While forward passing already existed in lacrosse and American football, hockey purists preferred rules restricting the attacking team. “[T]he new forward pass in hockey threatened people’s world view,” he writes. “Passing a puck forward, to the Victorians and Edwardians, was too extreme, and therefore not honourable ... The forward pass would be so fast, and would circumvent the opposing team so easily that it was obviously unfair.” It’s not perfectly clear what the game looked like until this point. The degree to which passes were forward, backward, or lateral is still a matter of debate — Bowlsby includes a discussion on the subject with fellow author Bill Fitsell as an appendix to the slim volume. This much we do know: before the rule change, hockey was so slow that players usually spent the entire game on the ice. Lester and Frank Patrick, co-founders of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association, decided to shake
The Victoria Pros of 1912-13, one year before the team competed for the Stanley Cup. Playing coach Lester Patrick is third from left. Craig Bowlsby collection
things up, and allow forward passing in the neutral zone, an idea dismissed by eastern sportswriters as “foolish,” “absurd,” and “a farce.” Players had mixed feelings, with Vancouver Millionaires captain Si Griffis opining that it would be impossible to implement. Even Lester
harboured doubts. When the new “no offside in centre ice” rule was introduced on November 28, 1913 in a pre-season game between Vancouver and Victoria, as expected, things sped up considerably. Players used to a full 60 minutes “began to gasp and wheeze.”
But while quickly embraced in the west, the forward pass was only gradually and grudgingly accepted in the east.
The NHL didn’t adopt its own version of the rule until 1918, and until then, Stanley Cup showdows between the two leagues alternated rules — though the PCHA didn’t always dominate contests that employed the forward pass. The book has a peripheral local connection: the Patricks lived in and played for Nelson between 1908 and 1911 and the Pacific Coast league was bankrolled by the sale of the family’s sawmill at Crescent Valley, whose ruins are still visible. Copies can be ordered directly from the author at epic@ intergate.ca.
