KITIMAT - Once complete, the PNG Looping project will do something no other natural gas pipeline in this region will do: lower our rates. But that will be years off, as Pacific Northern Gas (PNG) is early in the review process for their proposed project, which will effectively twin their existing pipeline from Summit Lake. The company held an open house last Tuesday, part of their process with the Environmental Assessment Office to gather what information will be needed in their eventual environmental
review submission. So far the company has just submitted a project description, which is what tells the EAO whether or not a project triggers an environmental review. Bill Manery is the project manager and spoke of the project to the Sentinel. He explained the proposed route will start at Summit Lake where their existing line meets Spectra Energy’s line, and will parallel PNG’s existing route until the Telkwa Pass. Instead of sharing the existing route through there the pipe veers north around the mountains before heading south into Kitimat. The Telkwa Pass, he said, is
just not ideal for construction. “There have been issues in the past, we’re anticipating there could very well be issues in the future...we just don’t want to go back in there,” said Manery. PNG has two primary customers they are aiming to serve with their new capacity. One, Douglas Channel Energy, is a co-operative which plans to establish a floating liquefaction facility on the Douglas Channel. Manery said that project will actually take up the unused capacity on PNG’s existing line. The project is partially owned by the Haisla. There is a second LNG pro-
posal the pipeline would serve as well but Manery didn’t provide details on what that company is. “There is one other project,” he said, “It’s less developed. It’s a consortium, but it’s a second project of about the same size,” he said. While that consortium is also looking at Prince Rupert, “We think it’s probably going to be Kitimat.” People can comment on PNG’s project during this Application Information Requirements (AIR) process, which runs to January 2. The Environmental Assessment Office website is at www. eao.gov.bc.ca.

LNG CANADA PROJECT Environmental Assessment: Public Comment Period closes December 13 LNG Canada is proposing to build a liquefied natural gas (LNG) export terminal in Kitimat, B.C. As required by both the provincial and federal governments, the project is undergoing an environmental assessment process, coordinated by the BC Environmental Assessment Office (EAO). One of the first steps in the environmental assessment (EA) process is to develop Application Information Requirements (AIR), a document that describes the studies, methods, and information that will be required in our future Application for an Environmental Assessment Certificate. This step also includes a 30-day public comment period hosted by the EAO to seek comments on the draft AIR, which began on November 13. Comments must be submitted to the EAO by the close of the comment period on December 13 at midnight. Hamper deliveries are just a week away as donations pour in By Luella Froess THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
KITIMAT - The application deadline for Kitimat’s Christmas Hampers passed yesterday as delivery day approaches in one week. As mentioned in last week’s article, Gareen Ball will be hosting her annual Christmas Show on Saturday, December 7, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. lower level of
City Centre Mall outside Sight & Sound. She will be assisted by guests from the community and we are hoping many of you will drop by to say hello and make a donation of nonperishable food, gifts or cash – we look forward to seeing you. This past Saturday, November 30, CFNR with Yulanda Leighton and William Wesley, as well as various Food
Bank members, hosted their 7th annual Food for Christmas Hampers outside Super Valu for several hours (in the pouring rain) and collected five grocery carts of food, much of it donated by Super Valu management and staff along with $243.75 in cash. Cash donations received this week include V&R Levesque $100; Anonymous $35; B&H Adams $20; Anony-
mous $100; Doctors Gottschling & Stevenson $1000; J Peck $50; Anonymous $50; Dr. D. Carstens $150 and the KGH Medical Staff $200 for a total to date of $3209. Remember donations can be dropped off under the Christmas Tree at Envision Financial Credit Union and Wing’s Travel will accept cash donations. Receipts will be is-
sued for donations of $10 and over. Delivery date for the hampers is Saturday, December 14, beginning at 10:00 a.m. and a responsible adult or teen must be home in order to sign for the hamper as it will not be left and can be picked up at the Food Bank the following Tuesday or Thursday. Late applications will be filled that week as well. Hamper organiz-
ers thank those people/ organizations who have
called to say they will help deliver hampers.

Rampage make it three wins in a row By Shaun Thomas THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT - The Prince Rupert Rampage took to the ice on Saturday night looking to extend their winning streak to three straight against the Houston Luckies. The two teams set the pace for what would be a physical game in the early going, and it would be the Rampage that opened the scoring as Jordan Weir beat Brock Henrickson with 13:50 to play to put Prince Rupert up early. After the early goal, however, the game evolved into a goaltender battle as Henrickson and Warren Hansen turned away every shot they faced leading to a 1-0 Rampage lead through the first. The goalies and the hard hits continued to be the highlight of the game, as Henrickson seemed to be standing on his head at times and kept the Luckies within striking distance despite Prince Rupert controlling the play throughout the early part of the period. Although much of the play was in the Luckies zone, it was Houston who struck with 9:52 to play as Blair Dinelle put the rebound of his own wrap-around over Hansen’s glove to tie things up at one. Although there was a lot of physical play in the late going, neither team could put one past the netminders and the period ended with the score knotted a one. The Rampage started the third

But with just under 13 minutes to play the wheels
started to fall off for the Luckies as Gavin Harburn scored his first CIHL goal with a wrister over Henrickson’s blocker with 12:42 to play and Devin Palmer went five-hole just nine seconds later to lead by two. The goals seemed to frustrate
the Luckies, who picked up several penalty minutes late in the game and paid the price for it. Brock Ward’s blast from the point found the back of the net during a 5-on-3 powerplay with 4:08 to go, and Jeff Coolin drove the final nail in the
coffin with a wrist shot from right in front while on the power play with just 56.3 seconds left on the clock to give Prince Rupert the 5-1 victory. “They are a very physical team. We knew from playing them earlier this year that their plan was to hit anyone with the puck, so we wanted to move the puck quickly and outskate them so that they would have nothing left by the third, and I think the scoring shows it worked,” said Rampage captain Jared Meers. “The guys stuck to the game plan and our goaltender battled hard to keep us in it, although I have to tip my hat to their goaltender as well,” said coach Roger Atchison. The Rampage have now won three straight against division leaders, and Meers said it shows just how the team has evolved throughout the season. “The team was largely new guys coming together with a new system under a new coach, so this just shows that we are beginning to gel and everything we have been working for is paying off,” he said, with Atchison noting a lot of it has to do with having a healthy team again. The Rampage, who remain at the bottom of the Western conference rankings with eight points, will host the Kitimat Ice Demons this Saturday. “I expect another win,” said Meers.
Demons split two games on the road Kings take two at home By Allan Hewitson
THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
KITIMAT - The Kitimat Ice Demons continued their up and down season with a satisfying 4-3 win over long-time rivals the Williams Lake Stampeders on Saturday night in Williams Lake but started slowly, went through both goaltenders and suffered a devastating 10-2 loss in Quesnel to the Kangaroos on Sunday afternoon. However, the Demons managed to hold on to first place in the CIHL West Division with 15 points from their 13 games in the tightening division standings. The season schedule has resulted in a surprising gap in the number of games played with Demons at 13 and the second-to-last place Terrace River Kings having played only nine games to date. On Saturday, the Demons and Stamps exchanged early goals in the first period, with Jassi Sangha (Francis Johnson, Nathan Zurak) putting the Stamps into the lead at 5:07 on a power play (with Ben Rumley
in the box for Kitimat on a hooking call) but within seconds of the face-off combined play from Josh Slanina to Jeff Mildenberger to Brandon Wakita promptly tied the game. The Demons snatched the lead in the second period, with Terry Whelan scoring from Ben Rumley and Derek Wakita scoring the only goal of the period just after the eight minute mark. Into the third, on a power play of their own the line of Wade Masch, Terry Whelan and Derek Wakita combined to stretch the lead with Masch finishing the play to put the puck behind Justin Foote in the Stamps net. Jassi Sangha was in the box for a hooking call. Brett Vilness faced only five shots in the second period as he blanked the Stampeders in that period, but faced stood tall against a 17 shot barrage from the increasingly desperate Stampeders in the third, allowing a Derek Walters shot (Nathan Zurak, Aaron Zurak) to close the score to 3-2 for the Demons. Forty seconds later, however Jeff Mildenberger restored the two goal lead at 4-2, with a
third assist of the game to Derek Wakita. Demons held the line although Derek Walters scored again with assists to the brothers Zurak, but it wasn’t enough as the Stampeders dropped into second place in the East Division as the Quesnel Kangaroos had a scoring ball in Quesnel beating the Lac La Hache Tomahawks 11-4 on home ice, to edge a point ahead of the Stamps at 18 points. The Kangaroos stretched their division lead to three points (20) as they rolled over the Demons in Quesnel Sunday afternoon, 10-2, running up a 4-0 lead in the first, in the process victimizing rookie Demons goaltender, Tony Losier, in his second start. Losier was pulled at the 15 minute mark of the opening period, in favour of Brett Vilness after three goals by Riley Ferster, Allessio Tomasetti and Matt Stang. Quesnel’s fourth goal was scored by Tomassetti. With the momentum Kitimat continued to wilt and the Kangaroos added three straight goals in the second, two in succession by
Paul Girodat and a second of the game by Matt Stang, before Josh Slanina got Kitimat on the board at 8-1, with assists to Derek DeLisser and Brandon Wakita. Michael Bell got a second goal for Kitimat (Terry Whelan, Ben Rumley) with five minutes left in the second period. But that was all the scoring for the Demons as Quesnel’s momentum could not be stopped as Curtis Gassoff, Rigby Burghart and Paul Girodat finished the scoring for the Kangaroos. Burghart’s goal was the only power play goal of the game, as Demons suffered one of their heaviest defeats in several seasons. In other weekend games the Prince Rupert Rampage prevailed 5-1 over the travelling Houston Luckies, Saturday night, while the Terrace River Kings were getting past the Smithers Steelheads, 5-4 in a shootout. On Sunday, the Houston Luckies, en route for home, were also blown out 13-2 by Terrace River Kings, in the only other Sunday afternoon game.
TERRACE - The Terrace River Kings continued their point streak last weekend on home ice, beating the Smithers Steelheads 5-4 in a shoot out on Saturday night and smashing the Houston Luckies 13-2 in the Sunday afternoon game. The game against Smithers saw a lot of back and forth action, with two goals for the Kings scored by Josh Murray, one shorthanded, one by Nick Homeniuk, and one by Jeremy Van Den Broek, with the shootout winner scored by Calen Findlay. Ben Reinholt led the Kings in scoring Sunday against the Luckies, with four goals, Corey Dekelver saw two – the opening and closing goals, with a pair a piece for Tristan Murray and Derek Jurista, and one a piece for Homeniuk, Van Den Broek, and David Redpath. The Kings are now sitting at fourth in the west with 11 points in nine games, just one point behind the Luckies with 12 points in 11 games. With a pair of away games in the east this weekend against Lac La Hache Tomahawks and Williams Lake Stampeders, the Kings are looking to keep the momentum they’ve had since their early November win against Kitimat going through the second half of the season. Next home games are Dec. 13 and 14, where they’ll host Kitimat and Prince Rupert, currently ranked first and last, respectively, in the west.

The Star Manx is loaded with pellets from Westview Terminal on Thursday.
First ship calls on Westview Terminal By Martina Perry THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT - Pinnancle Renewable Energy and the Prince Rupert Port Authority are celebrating the first ship calling at Westview Terminal. The Star Manx arrived at Westview Terminal on Nov. 27, being loaded with wood pellet cargo until Nov. 30 when it began its journey to the Port of Tyne in the United Kingdom. Leroy Reitsma, president and chief operating officer of Pinnancle Pellet, said the first ship calling went well, with the terminal staff ensuring the process ran smoothly. “We were able to test out a fair bit of the equipment. It was a commissioning shipment, so not everything goes as perfectly as it will in the future. But in general, I think we made some good headway with the shipment in terms of the commissioning process,” he said. Michael Gurney, manager of corporate communications for the Prince Rupert Port Authority, said in the future the process will be faster. “As with any new terminal commissioning, there’s steps that have to be taken to ensure the machinery is working and the new workers are familiar with their tasks. As a result, future ship visits will be turned around
much more quickly, but as you would expect this one was handled methodically and carefully and everything was checked and double checked,” Gurney said. Gurney said from the Port of Tyne, the product will be moved to North Yorkshire where it is destined for a generating station which has been converted from coal to cleanburning wood pellets to generate electricity. “What we’re talking about here is a low-emission fuel source, that’s produced right here in British Columbia. The fact the Port of Prince Rupert is now added this type of cargo to its mix is a good news story for the port and entire trade corridor,” Gurney said, adding that shipping wood pellets through the port has further diversified cargo. “We’re able to build the Northern B.C. economy by helping Pinnancle Pellet move their products, therefore build job opportunities and serve new markets.” Reitsma said the next ship will berth at Westview Terminal in midDecember. “That will be another commissioning test at different level. We’ll evolve into larger shipments as we gain confidence in the operation of the terminal,” he said.

Public unions sign on five-year agreements By Tom Fletcher THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
VICTORIA - More unions have recommended acceptance of the B.C. government’s offer five-year agreements with extra wage increases tied to economic growth. Finance Minister Mike de Jong announced three tentative deals Tuesday, with B.C. Government Employees’ Union and other unions representing 51,000 people in community social services. Combined with members of the Health Sciences Association, whose negotiators endorsed a five-year deal last week, a quarter of B.C. public sector employees are being asked by their unions to vote yes. The agreements include guaranteed wage increases of about 5.5 per cent over five years, plus extra money in years where the B.C. economy grows beyond independent forecasts. The latest deal covers direct government employees, home support workers, alcohol and drug counsellors, adult day centres, child development centres and mental health group homes. De Jong said the “growth sharing” concept is a first for B.C., and
five years is unusually long for provincial government deals. Another first is to have substantial settlements four months before existing contracts expire. “I think they signal a strong working relationship and one that is in very positive Author evolving ways,” de Jong said. BCGEU, which represents some of the community health workers, said the latest agreement also includes wage adjustments for some job categories. Other improvements include mileage and meal allowances equal to its public service agreement and removal of a preexisting condition restriction for longterm disability. The growth sharing formula is based on the finance ministry’s economic forecast council, private sector experts who estimate growth in January as the provincial budget is being prepared. If actual growth exceeds projected growth, it means $200 million more for the provincial treasury, which would be shared 50-50 with unionized employees for that year. De Jong said if the formula had been in place for the last 12 years, there would have been extra money in six of them.
