Waiting room attack prompts review of mental health risks Hard lessons learned after psychiatric centre assault, say officials Kyle Slavin News staff

Red nose for Santa Six-year-old Hannah Michael awaits the arrival of Santa Claus hoping to impress him with her nose during Esquimalt’s Celebration of Lights parade Tuesday evening. The holiday celebration also included a community celebration at Archie Browning Sports Centre.
Island Health and local police departments are re-examining how they deal with detainees with mental health issues, after a visitor was attacked at Royal Jubilee Hospital’s psychiatric emergency services facility. On the afternoon of Nov. 5, Saanich police detained a 33-year-old man at his home under the Mental Health Act after his mother expressed concern for his wellbeing. “It was a report that he was acting in a strange or odd behaviour,” said Sgt. Steve Eassie. “Generally why people are apprehended under the Mental Health Act is because they pose a risk to themselves or others.” Two officers escorted the man to the Archie Courtnall Centre at RJH for assessment. It was while they were in the waiting room that the man, without
provocation, attacked another man sitting beside him. “He struck that individual several times, resulting in injuries to the uninvolved party’s face and head,” Eassie said. The officers and security from Island Health quickly intervened and subdued the assailant. The victim, who was waiting to see another patient, received a deep laceration to his lip and bruising to his eye. Brodie Bingley now faces a charge of aggravated assault and uttering threats as a result of the incident. “I believe following the attack he may have said something to the effect that he would harm this individual if he saw him again,” Eassie said. Sarah Plank, spokesperson for Island Health, says a review of the incident has been completed and her organization is now working with Saanich and Victoria police departments to ensure proper safety measures are in place when someone is brought in under the Mental Health Act. More unions have recommended acceptance of the B.C. government’s offer of five-year agreements with extra wage increases tied to economic growth. Finance Minister Mike de Jong announced three tentative deals Tuesday, with B.C. Government Employees’ Union and other unions representing 51,000 people in community social services. Combined with members of the Health Sciences Association, whose negotiators endorsed a fiveyear deal last week, a quarter of B.C. public sector employees are being asked by their unions to vote yes. The agreements include guaranteed wage increases of about 5.5 per cent over five years, plus extra money in years where the B.C. economy grows beyond independent forecasts. The latest deal covers direct government employees, home support workers, alcohol and drug counsellors, adult day centres, child development centres and mental health group homes. De Jong said the “growth sharing” concept is a first for B.C., and five years is unusually long for provincial government deals. Another first is to have substantial settlements four months before the existing contracts expire. “I think they do signal a strong working relationship and one that is evolving in very positive ways,” de Jong said. BCGEU, which represents some of the community health workers, said the latest agreement also includes wage adjustments for some job categories. Other improvements include mileage and meal allowances equal to its public service agreement and removal of a pre-existing condition restriction for long-term disability. The growth sharing formula is based on the finance ministry’s economic forecast council, private sector experts who estimate growth in January as the provincial budget is being prepared. If actual growth exceeds projected growth, it means $200 million more for the provincial treasury, which would be shared 50-50 with unionized employees for that year. De Jong said if the formula had been in place for the last 12 years, there would have been extra money in six of them. editor@vicnews.com
Tourism Victoria hires new CEO After running for the past five months without a permanent president and CEO, Tourism Victoria announced the hiring of Paul Nursey on Tuesday to fill the roles. Nursey, whose latest job was vice-president of strategy and communications for the Canadian Tourism Commission, starts Jan. 20. He succeeds Rob Gialloreto, who left the city’s destination marketing organization in June to become CEO of Consumer Protection B.C. “In a strong candidate pool, Paul stood out in terms of his extensive skill set, passion and demonstrated tourism leadership,” Tourism Victoria board chair Dave Cowen said in a release. Nursey was a unanimous first choice among the board of directors to be offered the job, Cowen added. ddescoteau@vicnews.com

Lawyers representing a former employee of a downtown Victoria medicinal marijuana dispensary are back in court today, fighting to uphold a ruling that allows the society to sell edible and topical marijuana products to patients. In 2012, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Robert Johnston concluded that a section of Health Canada’s Marijuana Medical Access Regulations that allowed only dried marijuana for patients was unconstitutional under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The ruling stemmed from the 2009 arrest of Owen Smith, a former cook for the Victoria Cannabis Buyers’ Club (formerly the Cannabis Buyers’ Club of Canada). “The evidence on trial was very clear that these patients weren’t just preferring tasty cookies … but in fact they derived significant medicinal and therapeutic benefit from the different products,” said Kirk Tousaw, Smith’s lawyer. In its appeal, the Crown will argue that Johnston misinterpreted and applied too broadly the Charter rights of medicinal marijuana patients, Tousaw said. If the B.C. Court of Appeal ruling is not unanimous, the case could then end up before the Supreme Court of Canada. Health Canada has so far ignored Johnston’s
ruling and refused to consent to producing alternative medicinal marijuana products. “It’s not just about medicinal cannabis, it’s about the right of patients to autonomously decide what they put into their own bodies to help their serious illnesses without threat of criminal sanction,” Tousaw said. Ted Smith, the former owner of the Cannabis Buyers’ Club, declared bankruptcy earlier this year after the Canada Revenue Agency requested $150,000 in back taxes for medicinal marijuana sales. The club now operates as a non-profit society, Smith said. “We want to teach the world how to make medicine with this plant,” he said. “The pharmaceutical industry doesn’t need to profit off and control this plant in the way it does off normal drugs.” The federal government will phase out its existing medicinal marijuana licence program, which permits patients to grow a small amount of marijuana at home, by March 31, 2014. The program will be replaced with a commercial model that permits only mail delivery of marijuana to authorized patients. dpalmer@vicnews.com

Victoria shelters brace for cold snap Daniel Palmer News staff
Unseasonably cold weather is pushing Greater Victoria’s shelters and charities into high gear this weekend as they help the homeless population battle the elements. An unseasonal cold snap is working its way through Greater Victoria, with overnight lows expected to hit -6 C on Friday – seven degrees lower than the historical norm – and daytime highs of 1 C over the next several days. “We’re open for emergency weather response, but when our

beds fill up, we’re still allowing people to come in, warm up and get some coffee. We just don’t want to see people out in the cold,” said Don Evans, executive director at Our Place Society. Our Place receives funding for 50 emergency beds during extreme weather, but demand for many of its services has been higher than anticipated since September, Evans said. “We were $100,000 below our fundraising target in November,” he said. poor weather. The Salvation Army’s downtown centre and St. John the Divine church also provide 70 combined emergency beds, while the Victoria Native Friendship Centre in Saanich and Sooke Baptist Church open their doors during extreme weather as well. dpalmer@vicnews.com

Tracy So remembers watching the Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageant as a little girl at home in Esquimalt. Fairchild was a fledgling Chinese language TV station and the So family, who operated Bill’s Restaurant in Colwood, watched regularly. Tracy and the network are both 20 now and find themselves matched up again, this time with So as a Top-10 finalist for the competition, which wraps up with a gala event Dec. 12 at the Vancouver Convention Centre. “In the Asian community, it’s a really big honour to be in it,” she says. “We would joke about (someday being in the pageant) because we would see it on TV. But this was something I wanted to do, not something my parents would pressure me about.” Even people in Victoria’s Chinese community are talking about it, she says, noting that the pageant has been written up in Cantonese-language newspapers that get delivered to Chinatown. The pageant, which sees young women apply for one of the 10 positions, is run by Fairchild as a promotional event for the City of Vancouver and its Asian community. Some past winners have gone on to do film work in Hong Kong, which is considered the Hollywood of China. Tracy’s older sister, Carmen, says Tracy is unique in the competition in that she speaks fluent English and Cantonese and is one of just two finalists born in Canada. “That could be a big advantage for her (in film), because she could easily switch between the two languages,” Carmen says. Tracy worked two jobs back home in the summer to earn enough to move to Vancouver in September and start a new life. She got a job with Shaw and plans to start school in the new year, but left her job when she was chosen from a field of 100 applicants as a finalist. “They keep us pretty busy,” she says of the

The gala and final competition includes the typical public speaking, Q & A and glamour aspects, but also the return of a talent competition. “I’m really nervous. There’s definitely a lot of things going on and a lot of stage training,” she says. So, who performed and practised various forms of dance through her high school years, will do a hip-hop routine. She is also catching up on world news and events, to prepare for the judges’ interview that happens Tuesday and makes up 40 per cent of contestants’ grade. Regardless of the result, she hopes good things come from her experience. Her goal is to work in public relations and marketing and to that end, she has already been given a good word about a possible internship with Fairchild. Big sounds of the season Cook Street residents UVic prof’s Tuba Christmas celebrates 35 years
await clean up plan
Edward Hill

Beacons of the holiday season are all around us – homes adorned in lights, tinsel on the lintel, and bigbearded jolly men in red suits. But for many in Victoria, the true heralding of Christmas comes with the baritone call of the tuba. Pacific Northwest tuba and euphonium musicians, usually solitary figures in orchestras and bands, have massed together for a single free concert for the past three decades under the guidance of Eugene Dowling, a professor in the University of Victoria school of music. This Saturday, Dowling and scores of tuba musicians young and old will play Christmas tunes for the 35th year running, in Market Square. The City of Victoria has even declared it “Tuba Christmas Day.” “It’s been a marvellous 35 years. The audience is growing exponentially. I think this year will be something big,” Dowling said. “They say it’s not Christmas until you’ve had Tuba Christmas. A lot of people say it starts the Christmas season for them.” Dowling imported a Tuba Christmas to his newly adopted home of Victoria in the mid1970s after experiencing a version of it in Chicago. “The first time was between the two Eatons buildings where the Bay Centre is now. We were huddled under a tarp, about 25 or 30 of us,” he laughed. “I really enjoy the camaraderie.” Last year the event drew 75 musicians who braved a downpour in the open-air section of Market Square. This year they’ve thankfully secured the covered area. High and middle school students from Spectrum, Reynolds, Esquimalt and Oak Bay will join UVic music students and members of the Greater Victoria Concert Band and the Naden Band, among others. “Last year it was a bit moist under the tents. The 62-year-old conductor got drenched. At
the end I took my sheet music and rung it out. It absorbed the rain like a sponge,” Dowling said. “I’m glad we are able to raise money for charity and bring people together. And some schools bring big tuba sections. It becomes a point of pride to bring the most tubas and euphoniums.” Dowling, who lives in Gordon Head, took up the tuba at in 1961 at his school in rural Michigan, and went on to play for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and then the Victoria Symphony Orchestra as principle tubist for 25 years. His 2008 album The English Tuba earned a Juno nomination. He’s had a successful music career that continues to this day, but the tuba was an instrument thrust upon Dowling at age 11. “I think I was sick the day they were handing out instruments (at school). When I went to the band room everything was taken, so the

There was good news and bad news coming out of the latest community meeting on chemical contamination in Cook Street Village. The good news was test results showed no further spread of the chemical perchloroethylene, or perc – a stain-removing substance believed by scientists to have originated from the site of a former dry cleaning operation at 325 Cook St. The bad news is that four homeowners, three on Mackenzie Street and one on Oxford Street, and the owner of the commercial building at 325 Cook St. must now work with the Ministry of Environment on a remediation plan to clean up the contamination. "The good news is there is no immediate risk to the residents," said Jan Abbott, a scientist with Franz Environmental and project manager for the Cook Street project. The goal of the latest round of

The new realities of mental health Kudos to Island Health for reacting quickly and making changes to procedures following an unprovoked assault in the psychiatric centre at Royal Jubilee Hospital. Victoria and Saanich police and Island Health (formerly the Vancouver Island Health Authority) have struck a committee to figure out ways to mitigate risk and exchange information about people detained under the Mental Health Act. It’s a small step in the right direction, but it shouldn’t have taken a violent assault for the health authority and police to recognize holes in procedures and to forge closer ties. The Archie Courtnall Centre is where people with suspected mental illness are assessed and brought into care. That a bystander could be attacked by a person in custody seems a serious security lapse. The potential for such problems only grows as government, health authorities and law enforcement slowly work out who will take responsibility for the mentally ill. For now, police agencies are often the first point of contact for somebody who is a danger to themselves or others, or who is breaking the law, due to mental illness. Fortunately, police are far better trained these days to recognize mental illness as a possible factor underlying criminal behaviour. Unfortunately, at times officers have become babysitters for people detained under such circumstances as they’re assessed and given treatment in a psychiatric facility, if a bed is available. This can be a serious drain on day-today resources if an officer is forced to wait with a patient for hours. There’s got to be a better way and better planning from different levels of government, involving all stakeholder agencies. Throwing money at the problem usually isn’t the best answer, although it’s often the easy answer. But we know this: as police training improves, more people will be detained under the Mental Health Act and land on the doorsteps of places like the Archie Courtnall Centre. Staffing and resources need to match these new realities.

Adding liquor outlets adds risks Re: MLA backs booze in B.C. grocery stores (vicnews.com) I am not an alcoholic, nor do I know what it is like to love someone who is. I can only imagine how this decision to put alcohol in grocery stores will cause unnecessary temptation and additional stress. Is it not challenging enough for those who suffer from alcohol addiction to avoid the many private and government-run liquor stores? There seems to be a liquor outlet of some description in every mall and neighbourhood. It is not difficult for the general public to walk from the grocery store, two doors down, to pick up the wine for dinner. Imagine what it would be like for an alcoholic to shop at the grocery store when a bottle of alcohol sits next to the bread and milk. Has convenience taken precedent over compassion for people struggling “one day at a time” to keep their addiction at bay? I believe this decision is businessdriven and all about the money. Where will the money come from to pay for more rehab centres or drinking and driving CounterAttack patrols? Is there enough money to be made to compensate for the fatalities that could result and the families destroyed? Convenience and money are not the right motivation to move forward with putting alcohol on our grocery shelves, when weighed against our obligation to our society as a whole. Gail Atkins Saanich
Interest rates in Canada are expected to remain low for the foreseeable future. Is that enough impetus for you to look closer at the housing market? Answer online at www.vicnews.com
Getting sick and tired of being nickel-and-dimed I wonder if there’s an evil genius hiding in a bleak mansion somewhere behind the Malahat, rubbing his hands with glee, pulling the strings of public agencies who seem hell-bent on driving residents into the ground and sending limitedincome seniors into abject poverty. “It’s only a few percentage points,” the agencies say. But when you add up these “small” increases – in water rates, school taxes, transit levies, garbage collection fees, sewage treatment and others – it can be a couple hundred dollars a month. Add the increases forced on users by B.C. Hydro, B.C. Ferries and FortisBC with no real oversight and blatant political interference in the process, and one cannot help but feel Big Brother plans to keep us in thrall to the power brokers. It truly may be time for revolution. Kevin Frye Central Saanich
Green MLA fails to represent electorate I now more clearly understand why Christy Clark cancelled the scheduled fall session of the legislature. But I do not understand why my Green MLA, Andrew Weaver, voted confidence in the bogus Liberal budget. The huge policy and economic mismanagement of B.C. Hydro, and

the massive cost implications for British Columbians, had been made readily apparent by NDP energy critic John Horgan. The B.C. Ferries fiasco has been well documented by Ferries critic Claire Trevena. Victoria-Beacon Hill MLA Carole James has clearly illuminated the shameful fact – and harmful consequences – that B.C. leads in Canada’s child poverty rate. Unaffordable housing and hydro rates, and growing poverty of the unemployed and the working poor, are a toxic socio-economic cocktail that have profound implications for our children and grandchildren. B.C. is the only major province without a comprehensive anti-poverty strategy, unlike Newfoundland and Labrador. The successful national housing scheme of the mid-90s was gutted by the federal Liberals and never fully replaced by the B.C. Liberal government. Why Weaver voted to approve the Liberal budget, when 70 per cent of his constituents voted against the Liberals – the Green book says they will reflect the views of their constituents – is a mystery. Island Health, police to establish mental health committee Continued from Page A1
“Any review that we do, our primary goal is look at whether there was something we could’ve done better
and something we could do to prevent a future event like this from happening,” she said. “We want to work together to make sure
we have consistent processes in place that mitigate the risk as much as possible. “One of the big ones is around the transfer of information between
police and staff who are working the psychiatric emergency services, and what that looks like, and whether there’s a formal or consistent way that

information might be conveyed.” Island Health and the two police departments will also establish a liaison committee to align all processes. “It’s too early in that processes to say specifically what the committee would be working on, but in general it would open up the dialogue between our staff and he police departments to make sure situations work as well as possible when police are bringing someone in under the Mental Health Act,” Plank said. Island Health will continue to look internally to determine if changes can be made to better ensure patient, staff and visitor safety. “The psychiatric emergency room can
often be a very fast, changing environment, and the staff there are qualified to work with unpredictable behaviour – they do that every day. The risk of violence is assessed with every patient who comes into psychiatric emergency services,” Plank said. “I think any time we can come up with a system that is going to assist us and assist the medical facilities in providing better services for the people we’re trying to assist, we all benefit,” Eassie added. He says detentions under the Mental Health Act are a regular occurrence for officers, saying they’ve become “in essence a de facto mental health response team.” “There’s becoming
a greater and greater demand on our resources to assist the mental health community with assessments and engaging with these individuals on a daily basis,” he said. “It would certainly be more beneficial if we had more access to resources.” He said mental health-related matters can tie up police resources for several hours, as officers who pick someone up under the Mental Health Act are required to stay with that individual while they wait to see a doctor in the emergency room. hen Sam Weber steps into the most intimate performance venue in Victoria, the singer/guitarist worries just a little. “You play, but people are literally sitting two feet from your face. It’s a bit shocking,” he said of Andy Briggs’ home venue. Weber performs at Victoria House Concert B on Monday night in the living room filled with CDs and set lists from Canadian and Victoria bands. “He’s dedicated his living room, that’s what his living room is. It’s a venue … just a really intimate, cosy one,” he said. “I’m pretty mobile, so I worry about it.” Weber has reluctantly adopted an attitude of just simply performing. “I’m right here and I’m just going to do what I normally do when I’m not two feet from you,” he said. “But you can’t really do anything wrong ... Everyone’s really understanding and forgiving.” The 21-year-old singer-songwriter and guitarist made some big leaps to land the intimate Victoria gig, and some other large opportunities in recent years. Weber earned a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, Mass. the summer he was 17. Though they offered him a scholarship, the 2011 Stelly’s secondary grad opted to return west. “It wasn’t for me. I liked the program I did there but ultimately I just felt my time and resources were better spent here focusing on self-recording and being creative,”

Weber said. “Since being back, I’ve built my studio business and developed those recording skills that I’ve utilized heavily to record not only myself, but other people.” Weber’s intuition turned out well; in 2012 he toured with Jets Overhead. “That on its own was worth it,” he said. “Adam saw me playing ... he asked me to come try out so to speak. We ended up getting along. We played a couple really cool shows with Sam Roberts, Tragically Hip, Current Swell, Stars – a lot of cool Canadian bands.” Weber debuted his first full-length album Shadows in the Road this summer, a record filled with a “wide scope of tunes.” “I recorded it over the course of 2010 and 2011. The songs I’d written were from when I was 16 up to when I put it out.” Weber and Vancouver artist Luca Fogale kick off a short Island tour with the Fernwood house concert Monday night. They head to Nanaimo Dec. 11 at The Buzz Coffee House and Char’s Landing in Port Alberni the next night. Weber also performs at Lucky Bar with Hawk and Steel on Jan. 11. “I’ve been working on writing and recording every night until about 5 a.m. for this EP I’m planning to release in 2014. I’m still working out logistics,” he said. “That’s my main focus right now.”
Did you know? In 2012, at age 19, Weber was one of the youngest people to ever be covered in a major Guitar Player magazine feature.

Lambrick Park bring it home Lambrick B.C. AA championship four years in the making Travis Paterson News staff
John Entzminger photo
The Lambrick Park Lions surround libero Emma Entzminger, in blue, to celebrate a set win at provincials.
Emilie Wong can rest easy as she looks back at her volleyball career knowing her Lambrick Park Lions are finally B.C. champs. The captain and fourth-year Lion helped her team defeat the Langley Fundamental Titans in the Senior Girls AA Volleyball Provincials final in Surrey on Saturday. Wong is the longest serving player, having been with the team since her Grade 9 year. She was on the court when the Lions lost in the provincial AA final in 2010 and 2011. “My first gold. It feels unreal,” Wong said. “I still can’t get over how the banner is in my school right now. I could have never imagined when I was in Grade 9 that I would get this, it still feels weird.” Wong is as driven academically as she is on the court and this may be the
end of volleyball career. She will likely focus on a university engineering program next year. “I’m not sure if I’ll play again so this is a great way to go out. Even if we didn’t win I would have been so happy with the team, because we had an incredible season, even before provincials, I’m so proud of them.” Going into the final the Lions hadn’t lost a set in the tournament or in any match over the last six weeks, including the Island championships. The Lions won the first set handily 25-11, which drew a push-back from the Titans, who won the second set 25-20. The rest of the match was a close one as the Lions eked out the next two sets 28-26 and 25-23. “The final was an incredible match, the last three sets were so close,” said Lambrick coach Chris Koutougos. “The rallies were so long, it was such a display of athleticism on both sides.” The Lions season has been one for the history books, yet when they came up against the Titans in the final, it was only natural they were a bit worried to see three girls towering at the net, two of them at least 6-foot-3. The Lions do have some height, with 6-foot-1 Shimen
Fayad (Grade 12) and her younger sister, 6-foot Thana. Beyond the Fayads, however, the Lions next tallest players are 5-foot-7. Shimen was named the AA tournament MVP, another line on her résumé as she heads to the NCAA’s Wichita State next year. “We were scrappy and found ways to score points,” Koutougos said. No senior girls team from Victoria had won a provincial title in over 10 years and there hasn’t been a AA team to win it since Lambrick did it in 1992, Koutougos added. “At our first practice of the season we wrote the date and time of the final, Nov. 30, 6:30 p.m., on the whiteboard,” Koutougos said. “However, when we sat down to set goals for the season, the girls identified that our primary goal was to honour and respect each other along the way. Their goal was ‘to take care of each other’ and ‘believe in the process,’ and the result will take care of itself. “When we finished the season ... the girls identified the banner as a symbol for what they’ve worked for all season.” Extended story at vicnews.com.

He Said, She Said We asked Gayle and Ken Paterson
Q: WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT SCALING DOWN TO A CONDO?
SHE SAID: We don’t have a garden or a big yard to look after. We’re a seven-minute drive to Esquimalt and a 20-minute walk to downtown. HE SAID: Big-ticket repairs can be erratic with a house. In a condo it’s more consistent, you just pay monthly for maintenance.

Condo living a pleasure for newcomers After looking at smaller houses, downsizing couple chooses Songhees condo Scan the condominium listings for Greater Victoria and you’ll find a vast range of properties, from a $30,000 independent living unit near Cook Street Village to a $4.4-million penthouse in downtown Victoria. Most buyers slot in closer to the $200,000 to $350,000 range. But the scope of properties available, from basic accommodation to luxury suites, illustrates a wealth of choice. Ken and Gayle Paterson weren’t shopping for a condo when they began looking for a place to retire and be closer to their grandchildren in Victoria. With a goal of finding a bungalow with a yard, relatively close to Cook Street, for under $1 million, they checked out a number of houses in Oak Bay and Victoria. Then they stumbled across an 1,800-sq. ft., two-bedroom, two-bathroom condo in Victoria’s Songhees neighbourhood. The stunning third-floor views grabbed Gayle instantly. “This bay is priceless,” she said, looking at Victoria Harbour through their living room window. “And we love how close it is to everything.” The active couple frequently walk the Westsong Walkway
and plan to launch their kayaks nearby on good days. They bought in 2012 and moved to Victoria a few months ago, after selling their five-bedroom, 6,000-sq. ft. home in Maple Ridge. It meant downsizing in the extreme. “There’s a lot of ways to get rid of things and we know them all,” Ken said. The Patersons fall into one of a number of categories of condo buyers in Greater Victoria. Others can include first-timers breaking into the real estate market; people investing in rental property, either as a revenue source or a home for university-bound children; and sometimes those whose family dynamic has changed. While prices are down in some areas and up slightly in others, condo prices remain generally stable across the region, meaning people in literally any situation can be accommodated, said Carol Crabb, past-president of the Victoria Real Estate Board. “It’s actually pretty balanced across the board, both for condos and for houses,” she said, describing the state of the market for buyers and sellers. The Patersons knew their unit, in a 20-year-old building, needed some upgrades. They plan to do deeper renos, but before buying, they could tell it was a well-maintained building, Ken said. They also knew enough to check the minutes of the building’s strata council to determine how well-prepared residents were for future repairs and

“Strangely enough, everything does get absorbed.” While selling out a new development in advance is rare today, Crabb pointed out one exception to the rule. The Janion heritage building, with micro-loft suites as small as 250-sq. ft., nearly sold out after the first day. – Don Descoteau

Welcome to the driver’s seat
Driveway goes Hollywood!
Zack Spencer reveals what turned his head week with a visit to the glitzy 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show, Alexandra Straub looks at what’s cool, Bob McHugh goes green and Keith Morgan sneaks a peek at a racy compact concept. Check out the full script at drivewayBC.ca
LA-LA Land auto extravaganza LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Auto Show is full of eye-popping sights and some even include cars! It’s not difficult to have your head turned but it is a challenge to pick one’s top picks but I’m for the challenge. Nissan GT-R Nismo Nissan stole the show with not only one of the fastest cars in the world but the fastest man in the world. Olympic gold medalist and world record holder Usain Bolt was on hand as Nissan’s Director of Excitement. Usain was clearly taken with the new GT-R Nismo, there were also promises to get him one to replace his gold coloured GT-R. Power has been pumped up to 600hp taking this new Nismo version to 100 km/h in just two seconds. Look for the new GT-R in the spring of 2014. I suspect Usain will get his a bit earlier. Chevrolet Colorado The mid-size pickup truck market has been all but abandoned by the domestic automakers over the last few years leaving this category entirely to Toyota and Nissan with the Tacoma and Frontier trucks. Wait until next year and the choice will include the all-new Colorado from Chevrolet. Building off the success of the all-new full-size Silverado, the engineers have taken the same approach to this new truck. On the economy front, eventually there will be three engines to choose from. Out of gate, there is the base 2.5L 4-cylinder engine or a 3.6L V6. Subaru WRX Fans of the Subaru WRX will be very excited about the arrival of an all-new car but maybe a bit disappointed that this production model
doesn’t look very much little the sleek and sexy concept that was unveiled earlier this year. It should prove to be a capable car thanks to an all-new direct injection 2.0L 4-cylinder putting out 268hp and matched to the first 6-speed in the WRX. Subaru Legacy Concept A head Zack Spencer turning design that my sources tell me looks a lot like the production car. The metallic, almost chrome looking paint, certainly helps to make the car pop but the bold front grille and macho stance could very well be included in the final version. Lincoln MKC Lincoln has a long and distinguished history as an American premium brand but over the last few decades, it has been an extension of existing Ford products using different badging and trim. There is now a long-term plan to resurrect the Lincoln brand with all-new vehicle that use some Ford components but are developed separately from the main Ford line of products. The compact crossover MKC shares a platform with the Ford Escape but has been designed and engineered to be a very different car. The design, other than the trademark Lincoln grille is very European and the back wrap-around hatch is maybe Audi-inspired. Standard in Canada will be all-wheel-drive and adaptive suspension, matched to a 6-speed automatic transmission.
BMW 4 Series Cabriolet BMW has changed its naming: the 3 Series is now the sedan only while the coupe and convertible version are now called 4 Series. The all-new cabriolet is wider and features a new three-piece retractable hardtop and for the first time X-Drive AWD is now available on the convertible models. Interior refinements include a new neck warmer to that blows a steady stream of warm air on the front passengers neck and shoulders, helping to elongate the convertible season. Porsche Macan This small SUV is based on the same platform as the Audi Q5. This lower, sleeker and much more aggressive Macan will attract a lot of attention based purely on looks. Porsche made it very clear that this is not juts a Porsche in name but also in performance. Look for the Macan coming next year. Jaguar F-Type Jaguar made a big splash with the Jaguar F-Type convertible this year and next year we look forward to the coupe version, a dynamite looking coupe with a stunning silhouette and improved dynamics thanks to a stiffer body. The body of the car is built with extensive use of aluminum to produce the stiffest Jaguar ever made. This is one heart-pounding coupe I cannot wait to try. zack.spencer@ddrivewayBC.ca

PRESS GREATER VICTORIA • B3
The 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 is a stylish price-buster The Mercedes CLA 250 is here and it is a cause for celebration. This stylish compact car is powerful, filled with all kinds of features and starts at an amazing $33,900. What this means for the entire car market is a trend towards more car for less money. If Mercedes Benz can sell such a competent car for so little, the pressure will be on non-premium brands to sharpen their pencils, add more features, and revise their prices lower. Mercedes already has a very affordable hatchback with the B250, which arrived about a year ago and is the basis for this CLA. Both of these cars open up Mercedes Benz to a new market of buyers who might have been thinking about buying a non-pre-
mium brand but now realize a CLA is within reach. This, along with Mercedes’ strong resale value, will help to keep lease rates low, amplifying the value this car offers.
Looks Mercedes helped create the “coupe” 4-door sedan several years ago with the CLS sedan, which is based on the E-Class sedan. Dropping the roof, raking the front and rear windows and adding a more aggressive front end produces an eye-catching sedan that looks classy and aggressive at the same time. Mercedes has taken this formula and applied it to the B-Class platform to produce this coupe-like sedan. The base model comes with 17-inch wheels
but the sport package is a great value, at $1,600, which adds 18-inch AMG wheels and extra AMG exterior trim pieces. The AMG look is more aggressive, providing a bigger front air intake and chin spoiler to complete the look. The side windows are slim as is the back window for limited outward visibility, not so much for the driver but the rear seat passengers, especially kids.
Inside One trend I’m not sure I like is placing a screen in the centre of the dash – it’s like putting an iPad Mini permanently in the middle of the dash. It doesn’t look particularly polished, almost like an afterthought. Audi’s new A3 sedan, arriving in March, has the ability to lower its screen, which I think is a better approach. The dash has rotary air vents that look similar to the high end Mercedes SLS supercar. The front of the dash in my test unit was covered in an aluminum panel and surrounded by soft touch materials. The radio and heat controls are similar to other Mercedes products so even though this CLA isn’t uber-expensive, it looks like a proper Mercedes Benz. The premium package is a must because it includes a huge panoramic sunroof, back-up camera, automatic climate control and heated front seats; all of this for $2,800. This is a small car; the roof feels very low and back seat passengers need to be children or shorter adults. Rear seat outward visibility is limited and legroom is also at a premium.
The better bet for families is the less expensive B-Class ($30,500) because it offers a bigger back seat and hatchback storage.
Drive
lower centre of gravity and a trunk, which will muffle road noise compared to the hatchback. All CLA models come with a Collision Prevention Assist feature that alerts the driver to the possibility of an impending collision.

our price range, it had a generous cargo capacity, all-wheel drive (for our various trips up the mountain), and best of all, a diesel engine. I’m a huge supporter of alternatives to gas-powered vehicles, whether that’s diesel, electric or hybrids. It only seemed fitting to welcome this type of beautiful machine into our home.
Upon recommendation from a colleague, we went to Gold Key VW in Langley where our sales rep, John Nielsen, was fabulous. Upon entry into the dealership, we knew exactly what we wanted. He joked with us that we were making his job very easy. We said we can make it difficult if he wanted! We didn’t. The whole process was anything but painful. In fact, it was very pleasant. It seemed as though the other clients of the dealership were also experiencing the same thing. And from what I’ve heard from readers who have emailed me about the car-buying process, it is becoming more enjoyable for many people. I’m happy to hear that. With our new addition to the family and smiles on everyone’s faces, we couldn’t be happier. We’ve also driven almost 2,000 kilometres in the first two weeks of having the Touareg TDI at home and have only filled the tank twice. Even better! alexandra.straub@ driveway.bc.ca

it’s equipped. The front axle load carrying ability of 4WD models had also been increased to 2,495 kg (5,500 lb), which meant you could attach an even bigger snow plow. The standard engine is a 5.7L Hemi V8 that can supply 383 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. The optional 6.7L Cummins inline six-cylinder turbo diesel can supply 350 horsepower and a whopping 650 lb-ft of torque. It’s mated with either a six-speed manual (with an ultra-low first gear) or six-speed automatic with a feature that allows the driver to manually limit its highest gear and a tow/ haul mode. The Cummins is a truck diesel that makes customary diesel engine noses, so it’s far from quiet, especially when you start it up cold. The clatter isn’t so bad

The revamped RAM 2500/3500 is big, brash and brawny.
when you’re inside the cab, with the windows up, but your neighbours may not appreciate the early morning din. And when you get up to cruising speed on the highway, it’s barely noticeable. Other new features available on RAM HD include an electric shift-on-the-fly 4×4 transfer case, a back-up camera that makes trailer hook-ups easier and a monitor that provides a variety of vehicle information. The cab rides on a new C-pillar positioned hydraulic body mounts and there were suspension upgrades plus larger front axle U-joints. Changes for 2011 were minimal, but did include a tire pressure monitoring system and the LaRAMie trim got standard trailer brake control. In 2012, the HD got a six-speed automatic transmission and a RAMBox storage system was expanded to the 1.9m bed. The base engine’s towing capability was also increased by 2,000 lbs, thanks to a new 4.10 ratio rear end. Big, brash and brawny, the revamped heavy-duty (Dodge) RAM 2500/3500 was reunited with a cleaner, yet more powerful, Cummins diesel – a match made in truck heaven. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

A subtle change to the revamped 2010 Dodge RAM Heavy Duty (HD) pickup was the almost complete absence of the Dodge nameplate. There was a time when Dodge was embossed in huge letters across the tailgate and it would soon disappear completely, as “RAM” became dominant. The crew cab body was a new addition to the HD truck line of RAM, which was also offered in regular cab and mega cab body styles and in five trim levels; ST, SXT, SLT, TRX and LaRAMie. The cab choices could also be matched to 1.9m or 2.4m cargo boxes with three matching wheelbases, plus a huge selection of stand-alone options. Another important 2010 change was the re-introduction of the renowned Cummins diesel engine option. The addition of particulate scrubbing emission equipment had made the big in-line turbo diesel legal once again in both the U.S. and Canada. This engine offers phenomenal pulling power in addition to fuel-economy and longer driving range benefits. The 2010 RAM HD also joined GM and Ford in offering an integrated trailer hitch and a trailer brake controller. A nice added feature is that the brake action appears on the instrument panel as a bar graph. This makes it easier for a driver to monitor and adjust controller settings. The 2010’s towing and hauling capability numbers are also up and rated to pull up to 7,983 kg (17,600 lb) and carry 2,336 kg (5,150 lb) of payload, depending on how

Self-appointed speed cops are a danger to themselves and everybody else on the road.
