Mounties search a suspect and a stolen car after a double robbery and car chase through Nanaimo that ended on the corner of St. Andrew’s Street and Arbutus Avenue shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday. Two of three suspects involved in the robbery were captured Wednesday with one still at large Monday.
Double robbery caper ends after police chase By ChRIS BuSh
ThE NEwS BULLETiN
Police in Nanaimo are still tracking down a third suspect following a double robbery that concluded with a police chase through a residential neighbourhood as suspects fled in a stolen vehicle. Events unfolded shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday when an employee at Matheson Jewellers and Fine Art on Turner Road called 911 saying a man had fled the premises after threatening to smash the store’s display cases. The would-be robber ran off
empty handed and police now had his description and that of the car he was driving from the store’s staff. The next call came at 4:25 p.m. from Central Drugs store staff at Dufferin Crescent where two men, wearing masks, threatened to pepper spray the employees. This time the men robbed the store of drugs – police are not disclosing the quantity and type of drugs taken – and fled in a stolen blue Ford Focus, the same vehicle used in the previous robbery attempt. The car had been reported stolen on Tuesday. “Which helps,” said Const. Gary
O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman. Drug store staff also provided descriptions of the two men. When Mounties spotted the Ford being driven on Waddington Road a short time later the chase was on as more than 24 police officers swarmed into the area. The public got in on the chase too. O’Brien said people out walking their dogs and returning home from work pointed out the direction of the stolen Ford to police as the chase zigzagged through the residential neighbourhood. u See ‘MOUNTIES’ /4

Nanaimo could see the end to its six-year casino revenue losing streak. The City of Nanaimo anticipates its cut from Great Canadian Casinos will jump almost nine per cent from last year, making it the first increase in gambling dollars since 2007. Revenue at the slots and gaming tables has been slipping year-over-year. The streak started in 2008 when the city’s share of casino revenue dropped by more than $176,000 to $3 million. The following year it fell $274,000 and by 2012 it was down to $2.3 million. The casino blames competitive gaming centres and cautious spending – a result of the economic downturn. Ultimately, taxpayers pay the price for revenue losses. As a host city to a casino, the municipality gets 10 per cent of the gambling cash flow pulled in after prizes. It’s one of the few revenue alternatives to taxation and with no strings attached, city officials can use it to fund nearly anything they want, according to Brian Clemens, the city’s director of finance. The dollars have been used to pay for policing, social grants and the Nanaimo Museum and if there are shortfalls, city officials look to other means to cover the costs, including taxation. Clemens said the effects of reduced revenues has been offset with reserves – banked when coffers were flush with casino dollars – but money ran out this year. If the city had seen revenue fall again, the losses would have had to be funded by reduced costs or increased taxes, he said. u See ‘SURPLUS’ /4

A Harewood homeowner got a nasty surprise when he went to check on the cause of a power failure in his home on the weekend. The cause lay behind a wall of smoke that greeted the homeowner when he checked in the garage behind his home at 452 Watfield Rd. Saturday morning. Combustible material had ignited after it came in contact with an electric baseboard heater, said Capt. Ennis Mond, fire prevention officer with Nanaimo Fire Rescue. Mond said the fire was minimal and star ted sometime after 6 p.m. Friday, the last time the homeowner was in the garage, but burned itself out overnight. Unfortunately heavy smoke from the fire damaged four cars, including a 1939 Cadillac convertible, and a motorcycle under various stages of restoration in the garage. None of the vehicles were insured. The reason the power went out in the home was because hydro lines connect to the garage first and the house is linked off of a service panel in the garage. “He went to check the garage and it was floor to ceiling smoke,” Mond said. “So he did the right thing and called the fire department right away.” No one was injured in the incident.
The campaign to decriminalize marijuana in B.C. looked like it might end up on a high note, but big numbers of those in favour started turning out too late to force a referendum. The petition drive got off to a slow start, but days before the close of the 90-day effort to get 400,000 petition signatures to force a referendum on the decriminalization of marijuana, the numbers of people willing to put their names behind the cause started ramping up. “We’ve been at Country Club Mall for this past few weeks and it’s been really slow, so we decided to switch to Port Place mall on the 29th, so just last Friday, and we gathered 1,400 signatures,” said Amanda Orum, Sensible B.C. campaign organizer for Nanaimo. “Parksville-Qualicum, Nanaimo, Nanaimo-North Cowichan have all hit their 10 per cent threshold.” The issue proved to be surprisingly divisive as local reaction swung wildly between those for or against. Orum said at Country Club Centre, which allowed Sensible B.C. to set up a campaign table in the mall, campaigners were at times met with scorn, hollered at and spat on. “We got more ridicule at Country Club mall,” Orum said. “My husband got threatened to get gang-beaten by a bunch of 40-year-old guys. We had two retired RCMP officers come and scream at us and somebody tried to light our table on fire and we got spat on a few times. I’m really kind of happy the campaign’s almost done. Nobody really likes body fluids projected onto you.” The campaign table was moved to Port Place Centre and a much more receptive population was found. “In Port Place mall we actually got hugs,” Orum said. “I didn’t realize just how busy that mall really was. Just yesterday (Tuesday) we got over 800 signatures.” The two shopping centre locations combined tallied up 2,350 signatures as of Wednesday and more people signed through the campaign’s final days. Canvassers also went door-todoor gathering more signatures to create a cushion against signatures that might be invalidated by Elec-

tions B.C. The rising tide of signatures was mirrored across most of the province, but Dana Larsen, leader of the Sensible B.C. petition, estimated Friday the number of signatures from across B.C. would top out at 200,000 – substantially short of the 300,000 needed to force a referendum and just half of Sensible B.C.’s target of 400,000. The petition cutoff date was Thursday and all petition forms had to be submitted the Elections B.C. office in Victoria by Sunday morning. “No, we’re not going to make it this

We definitely picked up a lot of momentum over those three months.” Larsen said canvassers who got off to a slow start gained experience as the campaign progressed. Sensible B.C. will take time to study the lessons gained from the experience, reorganize and refinance before launching another campaign, possibly in mid 2015, Larsen said. photos@nanaimobulletin.com

Snuneymuxw choose new chief to lead John Wesley has been named the new chief of the Snuneymuxw First Nation after winning the election race by a narrow margin Saturday. Wesley – the only challenger to Douglas White III and a former chief – triumphed by a 13-vote lead in the Snuneymuxw election. A total 499 votes were cast for the office of the chief during the election race. Wesley got 253 of the ballots. White followed up with 240. In a statement to the press, White, who was seeking a second term, congratulated the new chief and all the other council members elected. “While personally I feel some disappointment I am proud of all the accomplishments our council achieved over the last four years,” he said. “In the next four years I look forward to seeing our nation continue to march on the path towards increased prosperity, health and well-being, and happiness for each and every one of our people.” Wesley was unavailable for comment before press time Monday. The elections are staggered, with half the council being voted in every two years. This round, incumbent councillors James Seward, Michael Wyse, Paul Wyse-Seward and William Yoachim beat contenders to take back their seats. Erralyn Thomas won her first term with one of the highest vote counts at 241.

Surplus saved in reserves
u From /1 The city had anticipated $2.3-million in casino revenue in this year’s budget and is now looking at a potential $2.5 million. The increase will top up the reserve fund for any future losses. The budget is usually based on casino revenue the year previous, but the financial director says the city will have to decide if it bumps the number up to reflect this year’s increase or err on the side of caution. “It could be criticized either way. Some people will say if you know it will be $2.5 million why not automatically increase [the budget] because that means $200,000 less in taxes,” he said. “But given the trends of the last few years I am not confident it will be the same.” Chuck Keeling, executive direc-
tor of stakeholder relations for the Great Canadian Gaming Corporation, says the revenue uptick is likely because of last year’s $5-million casino upgrade and a revamped and more pedestrian friendly Port Place Shopping Centre. A proposed passenger ferry and conference centre hotel could also be a boon to the casino, but Keeling said it is waiting to have more confidence in its business case before it contemplates growth. A $50-million expansion has been on hold since 2009. “Is it an anomaly? Is it something temporary? Hopefully not,” he said, of the influx in revenue this year. “Is it significant enough to look at a more significant expansion? Not yet.”

Snuneymuxw Nanaimo school trustees select new chairwoman files lawsuit I over closures dot NEary leads board for coming year. By Karl yu

By Karl yu The News BulleTiN
Snuneymuxw First Nation is proceeding with legal action against Nanaimo school district, filing an application for judicial review of the decision to close Cedar-area schools. Snuneymuxw are asking the B.C. Supreme Court to revoke a school district decision to close Cedar Community Secondary, Woodbank Elementary and North Cedar Intermediate schools, part of the district’s 10-year facilities plan. “We’re asking the courts to review the decision of the school district to close down the three schools in Cedar, so it’s called a judicial review, and what it’s aimed at doing is declaring those decisions null and void because of the failure of the school board to live up to its obligations to Snuneymuxw,” said outgoing chief Douglas White III. Snuneymuxw First Nation pays the school district more than $1 million each year for the education of its children and says it has agreements with the district that are “meant to be a foundation for collaboration in providing appropriate education services for [its] children.” White said there is a lawful obligation for the district to consult with Snuneymuxw, something he said didn’t happen with the closure of the schools. Snuneymuxw claims the district never engaged with it when developing the facilities plan and said it learned of the details of the plan only after it had been approved in principle by the school board. Dot Neary, board chairwoman, said she has received notification that court documents have been registered but has not had a chance to review the information. “At this point, I have no comment and the likelihood is, given that this is now going to be a court matter, the likelihood is I’ll have very little comment in the future because it’s going to have to go the course,” Neary said. The Snuneymuxw expect the school district to file a response in the coming weeks. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

The newly elected Nanaimo school district chairwoman is hoping there is better assessment of math and reading in the district during her term. Dot Neary, a five-year school trustee, was nominated and acclaimed at a school board meeting last week and while she expressed excitement
about the new role, she also said the board and district have a lot of work to do in the coming year. “We’re developing a district-wide assessment tool for literacy and numeracy,” Neary said. “I think that would be a goal – I don’t know how realistic it is but a goal would be to see those tools implemented across the district. Maybe not at every grade level but as many as possible over the next year or so.” Near y also said she would like to see continued improvements to aboriginal education, noting that the aboriginal graduation

“Our plan to close this gap includes staged user fee increases to build reserves that will earn interest, as well as a continuous review of project timing to ensure that infrastructure isn’t replaced until it is needed,” Clemens said. Homeowners can also expect an increase on their garbage and recycling bill in the new year to cover new vehicles and higher tipping fees at the regional landfill. A $125.80 garbage bill is expected to rise by just over two per cent. Those costs, however, are anticipated to be offset in May, when the city’s new agreement with Multi-Material British Columbia takes effect. The not-forprofit group of merchants and retailers, now mandated by the province to recycle what they produce, will pay the city $900,000 annually to continue curbside collection on its behalf. The new revenue is expected to save residents $34 on their garbage and recycling bills.

School support workers ratify new agreement
New process delays initial city budget Nanaimo’s tax-hike debate has been sidelined until next spring as part of a new approach to budgeting. The City of Nanaimo has launched a pilot process this year, giving elected officials a greater role in building the budget. It also means changes for residents, who won’t see a final budget package – and proposed tax increases – until March. Under the old system, city staff members would pitch a near-complete five-year financial plan to politicians and the public in December. The process didn’t seem to work for some city council members, who saw the budget as fait accompli and wanted more participation in its development, said Brian Clemens, the city’s director of finance. The pilot approach, which started in October, has council members scrutinizing priorities, costs and service levels for every city department. When the reviews wrap up next year, councillors will prioritize capital projects and decide on tax increases and service level changes, said Clemens. “I think what it does a little bit is moves a technical exercise to more of a community values exercise,” he said. “Council, as elected officials, are there to provide direction on what is the community value and what is an acceptable level of taxes [and] ... acceptable level of service.” The city will use last year’s five-year financial plan as a guide until council completes its budget process. Staff also expect to seek approval on projects that need to go ahead in early 2014 within the next month.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 606 and Nanaimo school district ratified a new collective bargaining agreement. The agreement includes a framework proposal, which was negotiated between the B.C. Public Schools Employers’ Association – B.C. school board bargaining agent – and the provincial bargaining team for the Canadian Union of Public Employees, as well as an agreement between the district and Local 606 on local issues. The agreement,
which is retroactive to July 2012 and expires June 30, will take effect after the provincial government approves a school district savings plan. It sees a two-per cent wage increase on Feb. 1 and a 0.5-per cent wage increase on May 1, with a one-per cent increase that already occurred in July. Local 606 represents bus drivers, caretakers, maintenance, clerical, educational assistants, noon-hour workers, child and youth care workers in Nanaimo school district.
RCMP officer sentenced to two years’ probation
I

Const. David Pompeo is not going to jail. He’s also going to retain his firearm and remain a member of the RCMP, stationed in Nanaimo, following an exemption granted by Judge Josiah Wood that would have otherwise resulted in his dismissal from the force. Pompeo’s sentencing otherwise amounts to a two-year term of probation of 240 hours
of community work service to be completed during the first 18 months of probation. More than four years after the incident and nearly 10 months since his conviction for aggravated assault in the shooting of Bill Gillespie near Chemainus, Pompeo learned his fate Thursday before Wood in Duncan Provincial Court. The circumstances of the case were reviewed in great detail by Wood, with particular attention paid to past decisions for some precedence. Pertaining to police officers, “cases of aggravated assault are difficult to find,’’ conceded Wood. The victim was clearly incensed with the decision.
“I was hoping he would get some sort of jail time and never, ever get his gun back,’’ Gilllespie told a scrum of local, regional and national reporters. When asked if he would be proceeding with a civil case against Pompeo, Gillespie responded: “You bet. “I’m deeply disappointed with Judge Wood’s sentencing – all the time, money taxpayers had to pay for this,’’ Gillespie said. “I think it’s a sad day for justice and it’s open season on our citizens.’’ In his reasons for judgment, Wood took into account the many references received attesting to Pompeo’s fine character, not only from the RCMP but the community.
“Constable Pompeo’s experienced considerable remorse for having shot Mr. Gillespie. I have no doubt Mr. Pompeo’s remorse is genuine.’’ Wood expressed concern over the RCMP’s use-of-force training that Pompeo said he followed before firing a shot. He questioned how the use-offorce training authorizes lethal force against a suspect. Wood suggested that “puts officers’ safety ahead of public safety. Const. Pompeo did what he was trained to do. His moral blameworthiness was reduced by those circumstances. He was not motivated by anything other than selfpreservation.’’ editor@nanaimobulletin.com

Keep calm during season Is it too soon to urge a little peace and good will this Christmas? Probably not. We’ve all seen the alternative, and it isn’t pretty. Some of us, it seems, are so busy pursuing the material side of the holidays that we’ve lost sight of the spirit. Stressed-out shoppers grimly hunting bargains in the aisles, screaming kids with surly parents and couples who look like they’re going to a funeral instead of experiencing the joy of the season. In short, people who bring their bad mood into a retail outlet to share with the staff and other consumers. While this can be a tough time of year if your finances are tight, it doesn’t have to be a fiscal or emotional crisis. After all, the most expensive items in the store are no gifts at all if the givers are grinding their teeth about the cost and the resulting damage to their credit rating. There’s nothing intrinsically wrong about giving big gifts, but not at the cost of civility and peace of mind. There are any number of inexpensive ways of celebrating the holiday season that don’t require busting your bank balance or losing your mind. Try asking the people in the stores, nicely, and you might discover some clever alternatives. Charity is always an alternative option to the consumerism at Christmas. Donate to local drives like Hamperville or Coins for Kids, or take on a project through Free the Children or World Vision – making the world a better place is always a worthwhile investment. So this Christmas, a suggestion: if you feel yourself starting to get anxious or angry, pause and take a deep breath and try to keep things in their proper perspective. Try smiling. Do something nice like holding a door open or letting a driver merge in front. It doesn’t cost a thing. allowing the potential trainwrecks of candidates (the staunch pro-lifer, anti-women, racist, whatever) to be barred from seeking election under a party’s banner – to remove the soapbox from under folks who add nothing to the political or social commentary. The side effect is that power became concentrated at the top. But does it take reforming the elections act to reverse this? Discussions on how to solve the National Hockey League’s problem of concussions continually revolves around eliminating full-contact hits to the head. They’ve tried everything – banning hits, increasing penalties, supplementary discipline and financial fines – to no avail, when the simplest and most effective solution is right in the hands of the players all along: stop hitting each other in the head. It shouldn’t take an act of Parliament to give MPs a backbone to go along with their backbench. While cynicism prevents me from believing that politicians are solely out for good government, my idealism still argues that we can aspire to better than we have now. Parliamentarians were elected to uphold the values of responsible government, security for society’s most vulnerable and standing up for the rights of Canadians – they should really get to work on that. editor@nanaimobulletin.com

Incinerator would bring energy To the Editor,
Re: Incinerator drama could turn into a tragedy and a farce, Letters, Dec. 3. Scott Littlejohn’s analogy to a drug deal shows his intention to instill fear. The jump to a conclusion is wrong on two counts. First, waste-to-energy does not encourage lack of recycling. The two best recyclers in the world, the Netherland and Germany, have both used WTE for a long time. Having Nanaimo say no is not going to teach Vancouver anything; they will simply select a different site. His second conclusion about Nanaimo being so good at recycling is questionable. Nanaimo waste is shipped off-Island every day. Nanaimo could become an ecofriendly leader, turning waste that is normally buried into energy, reducing what we are importing, bringing the Island a little closer to energy self-sufficiency. Nanaimo currently pays the secondhighest residential taxes per capita, in part because we have no industrial tax base left. This project has the potential to be the largest project in 50 years and bring high paying jobs. I applaud council. At least it is willing to listen and learn.

Garbage burner too close to city To the Editor,
Re: No decision from council on incinerator, Dec. 5. The proponents for the the proposed Duke Point garbage burner claim pollution controls will make the giant facility almost 100 per cent green. It will be interesting to see, if the project were to go ahead, how the smell from the hundreds of barges of Lower Mainland waste anchored near Duke Point will be controlled. Just look at a Google map of Duke Point and see it is a mere kilometre from our downtown tourist areas. Forget about enjoying a beverage on our waterfront, when that southeaster blows the smell and gulls into our personal spaces. Just say no to the project.
Michael Duff via e-mail

Re: Council silent on incinerator, Editorial, Dec. 5. Your editorial has missed the big picture of the frightening event which unfolded at council. The attempted skullduggery which could have haunted this council and subverted democracy

for years to come. At the very last minute possible Coun. George Anderson tried to slip a motion, which was not even on the agenda, through the back door before council was even brought up to speed. The 25 placardwaving anti-waste facility protesters should not be concerned Anderson’s motion was tabled. More alarming is how Anderson tried to sneak their motion through without caring what their democratically elected colleagues, all city residents and fairness stand for. I call on council to enact legislation requiring a minimum one months notice be given for motions to be introduced. So there will not be sinister surprises like this in the future.

Council should rewrite bylaws To the Editor,
Re: No decision from council on incinerator, Dec. 5. City council is a position where it can alter bylaws to disallow the import and burning of Metro Vancouver’s garbage. Instead, our mayor and council opted to do nothing until Vancouver is finished with its public consultation process. Yet, I’ve read that enacting a bylaw after the site has already been selected may pose some legal difficulty for the city. During a recent council meeting there was a presentation regarding a new passenger ferry service; reference was made to the possible positive economic benefits of this plan. Perhaps we should consider the sight that ferry passengers will have when they see barges full of trash transiting to be dumped in Nanaimo. Is this what we want Nanaimo to be known for? We all need to give consideration of the health, environmental and public-relations problems this project presents. Council needs to act in a timely manner to enact the necessary changes in our bylaws to block the burning of Metro Vancouver’s garbage
within Nanaimo. They also need to send a clear message to Vancouver that we do not want their garbage incinerator.

Polluting winds unpredictable Re: No decision from council on incinerator, Dec. 5. Have you ever noticed that the people who claim facilities like incinerators or nuclear waste storage schemes are safe and good job creators, never put them in their own communities? The City of Vancouver has bylaws making it illegal to build incinerators in their community. What do they know that we don’t? Favouring this proposal because our prevailing wind is from the west is very short-sighted. Much of the time winds are unpredictable. With the quantity of garbage contemplated for this plant, if even one tenth of one percent exits the smoke stack, the contaminant fallout will be measured in tonnes. Vancouver should handle its own garbage problems, not export them to more hard-up cities who are willing to sell out their environment for a few jobs and 30 pieces of silver.

Victoria-based musician Sam Weber follows his own beat when it comes to his career in the music industry
BY NICHOLAS PESCOD THE NEWS BULLETIN
S
am Weber was still a teenager when he was offered a full-time scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. He turned it down. “I decided to build my own recording studio and work on my music from that angle,” Weber said. The Victoria native had previously attended Berklee on a summer scholarship when he was just 17-years-old. However, he felt that that the program was not for him. “It wasn’t really optimized for what I was doing musically and where I wanted to go,” Weber explained. “It was not the right thing to be doing with my time or money.”

I really haven’t been able to come up with another way.” This past summer, Weber released his first full-length album titled, Shadows in the Road. “There is a lot of space in my music,” Weber said about his sound. “It feels like ambience but not like ambient alternative style of music but there is an ambient component to it.” Over the past couple of years Weber has been working hard on finding his own sound. “Achieving the sounds that I want to hear is something I’ve really fought with,” Weber said. “These days it has become something that I’ve gotten bet-

While there are challenges to being an artist on Vancouver Island compared to being an artist in Vancouver, Weber said the musical community in Victoria is extremely supportive. “In Victoria everybody knows everybody pretty much. By Nicholas Pescod The News BulleTiN
Two years ago, Burnaby native Luca Fogale decided that university was no longer for him. “It was the best decision I ever made,” Fogale said. He was in the middle of a psychology degree at the University of British Columbia when the musician inside him kept calling. “The decision wasn’t tough but the process was tough,” Fogale said. Eventually Fogale decided to drop out of UBC. Although it took his parents some convincing, the singer has begun to climb his way through the heavily populated British Columbia music scene. O n We d n e s d a y (Dec. 11), Fogale will be performing for the first time in the Harbour City at The Buzz Coffee House. Fogale’s pathway into music began when he star ted studying piano at an early age. Eventually he switched to guitar and then tried singing. “I started loving music when I started playing guitar,” he said. The Burnaby North Secondary graduate has a broad range of influences including the likes of B.B. King, Jimi Hendrix and Nick Drake. Fogale said he really developed a love for folk artists such as Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell. “I just fell in love with the simplicity of it and how honest it can be,” he said about folk music. Fogale released his first EP titled Paths this past July and is currently working on a new record. He said Paths addresses his journey and struggle to find himself and his true passion. “It’s really lyrical, with a lot of stories and a lot of questions,” Fogale said. Fogale, a former lifeguard, explained that he enjoys watching human interaction and incorporates
those interactions in “I felt like I grew his lyrics. immensely in that six “In a lot of songs months. For his efforts, he received $3,000 as part of a business plan he had to submit while participating in Peak. “Another thing that Peak helped with is it kind of showed people that I was taking this seriously,” he said. RENEE KATHLEEN LAIRD On December 3, 2013, Renee Laird (nee Mulligan) passed away peacefully in Nanaimo, BC. She was predeceased by her husband, Frederick Davidson Laird, in 1972, and is survived by her daughter Margaret, son Stephen (Ruth), loving grandchildren Sarah, Eve, and Ross, and numerous nieces and nephews in Great Britain. Renee was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on October 17, 1920. During the Second World War she worked as a volunteer for the British Armed Forces, and in 1949 married Fred, who had fought in the war with the British Airborne. In 1957 the family, including two small children, immigrated to Canada, stopping briey in Edmonton, before moving to St. Albert, where Renee took a job as recreation director with the (then) Town of St. Albert. She thrived in the position, and contributed in numerous ways to the development of the town. For a few years Renee was a director of the Edmonton Y.W.C.A. She was very involved with the Walterdale Playhouse, and for many years had an acting role in the annual Klondike Days melodrama. She was a member of the Seven Arts Club, and after retirement did a great deal of work as a member of the St. Albert Historical society. The family would like to acknowledge with thanks the kind and loving care Renee received in recent years from the wonderful people at Dover House in Nanaimo. A private service for family will be held, followed by cremation. In lieu of owers, contributions may be made to Nanaimo Loaves and Fishes – Hamperville, 1009 Farquhar Street, Nanaimo, BC, V9R 2G2.

“
JR. FOOTBALL team on hunt to replace coach.
I hope people in Nanaimo will remember me as a winner.
BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN
Coaching changes are coming at Caledonia Park – Coach Snoop won’t be back with the V.I. Raiders. Matthew (Snoop) Blokker announced Thursday that he won’t be re-signing as head coach of Nanaimo’s Canadian Junior Football League team. “I feel in my heart it’s time and I feel good about it,” he said. “I’ve known this throughout pretty much the whole year and it hasn’t changed.” Blokker said he’s looking for a new challenge somewhere where he can coach football as a full-time job. The Raiders club, he said, doesn’t have the financial means to be able to make that kind of offer. “The next level is where there’s definitely opportunities for jobs and I’ve got to work towards that,” he said. “In the junior level there’s only a few clubs that do that.” Blokker won’t be heading to any other B.C. team, he assured. He has an agent to help him in his job hunt and he has the support of his family to make a move. “To pack our bags and move because there’s an opportunity to better ourself as a family and move ahead in a career, that’s life…” he said. “We’re a football family and all they know is football. The hardest thing in the world was trying to explain to my

son that I’m no longer the head coach for the Raiders.” Blokker helped to bring junior football to Nanaimo alongside team owner Hadi Abassi in 2005, first trying to move the Victoria Rebels club and then instead being granted an expansion franchise in the B.C. Football Conference. He coached the team
from 2005-2007 and from 2008-2013, leading the Raiders to six BCFC championships, five Canadian Bowl appearances and three national titles. During that time he also became the winningest coach in B.C. junior football history. After his last win at Caledonia Park, a provincial championship victory in October, Blokker said he didn’t leave

the field until hours later. “That was a really emotional time for me,” he said. “I spent some time by myself on that field and I knew in my heart and my mind that was probably the last game I was going to coach on that field.” He feels as though he’s leaving the team in great shape, having recruited a young group of players
last year that will continue to develop. The Raiders’ longtime offensive coordinator Daryl Rodgers and defensive coordinator Doug Hocking aren’t expected back, but Blokker said there are other coaches qualified to step into greater roles and he said he hopes the club will promote from within. “In my mind this program really needs to grow,” he said. “It needs to grow at the board level and it needs to grow at the coaching level to continue to have growth at the player level.” Kabel Atwall, vice-president of the V.I. Raiders, said it would be “next to impossible” to have a full-time paid head coach. “The reality is, we’re a society and we live on the money that we raise and gate receipts,” he said. Atwall said he and Raiders president Chris Cross sat down with the head coach and told him they would welcome him to stay on, but would support his decision either way. It will be a challenge to replace Blokker, he said. “He’s been here since Day 1 and if anybody was sort of embedded in the team, it was him.”

Clippers win with shutout The Nanaimo Clippers are undefeated in December after a shutout win this past weekend. The Clips beat the Chilliwack Chiefs 2-0 on Saturday on Teddy Bear Toss Night at Frank Crane Arena. It wasn’t until late in the second period that Devin Brosseau scored the teddy bear goal, prompting fans to let fly with their donations for the Great Nanaimo Toy Drive. B re n d a n Ta y l o r iced the win with an empty-net goal in the third period and Tanner Kovacs earned the shutout in his first start with the Clips since being acquired late last month. Shots were 28-25 in favour of the home team. Nanaimo is back in action tonight (Dec. 10) and faces a significant challenge as it heads down the Malahat to take on the Victoria Grizzlies. The Grizz have won all six meetings with the Clips this season, but the last one was a narrow 3-2 loss just 11 days ago that came with some positives. “We knew we played well against Victoria in Victoria … We worked hard.” Brosseau said. GAME ON … After tonight’s game against the Grizz, the Clips will prepare for a road trip that will see them visit Coquitlam, Surrey and Langley on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

Bucs add to home-ice advantage
I
JR. B HOCKEY team moves into its new locker room at NIC. BY GREG SAKAKI ThE NEWS BuLLETIN
The Nanaimo Buccaneers have a place to build team spirit as they look to string some wins together. The city’s junior B hockey club officially opened its new locker room last month at the Nanaimo Ice Centre. “We’ve been waiting for it since September, so getting in there … it’s exciting,” said
Noah Russi, Bucs captain. “It’s a great facility. Everyone’s really happy.” The team held a ribboncutting ceremony Nov. 29, at which team owners Brenda and Phil Levesque thanked R.W. (Bob) Wall Ltd. and other community sponsors. “It was one of my dreams and it came sooner than I expected,” said Phil Levesque. “Look at this, it’s huge and it’s beautiful. We’re so lucky.” The locker room has laundry facilities and allows the team to care for and store its gear at the rink, so the Bucs can really settle in. The room is about more than just func-
tionality, too. “A lot of these kids have never been in this type of a dressing room,” said Levesque. “So for pride, it’s awesome. The Buccaneers, we’re going to fly now.” ICE CHIPS … The Bucs beat the Oceanside Generals 5-0 on Saturday in Parksville after losing 8-1 to the Victoria Cougars on Thursday down the Malahat. Garrett Dunlop scored in each game and Lee Orpen, Jordan Levesque, Chad Bell and Russi were the other scorers. The Bucs host the Gens this Thursday (Dec. 12) at 7:15 p.m. at the NIC.
Nanaimo Buccaneers players Riel Gibson, left, and Jordan Levesque enjoy their new digs at the grand opening of the team’s locker room last month.

Sisters meet up in cash league The game of the week in the Christensen Collision Cash League was a sister-versussister matchup. Kalia Van Osch’s undefeated Environmental Dynamics Inc. team (9-0) came out ready to throw rocks, scored four in the first end and went on to defeat her older sister Kesa’s team 7-2 on Thursday at the Nanaimo Curling Centre. The night’s best game saw Ian Cook and his Longwood Brewery team steal points in the third, sixth and seventh ends en route to a 5-3 win over Mack Truck. Brenda Ridgway’s Mid-Island Auto team defeated Laird Wheaton 7-1 and Garry Smith’s AC Taxi sped past Super 4 by a 9-0 score. In other club news, the Van Osch sisters will all compete in Curl B.C. provincial championships, Kesa in the women’s division and Kalia and Marika in the junior women’s division.

Kabel Atwall thinks the club’s national profile will help in the search for a new coach. “We’ll try to do this as quickly and as seamlessly as possible,” Atwall said. “With the reputation the Raiders have, I don’t think we’ll have a problem attracting good candidates for the position … If there’s somebody applying from within, obviously they would get maximum consideration but at the same time, there’s a lot of other good people in the country and even in the city of Nanaimo who might be interested.” The Raiders might shuffle some duties around, as Matt Blokker handled many other roles aside from coaching. But one coaching
duty will always remain the same. “Any coach that we hire will have to be in line with the Raider philosophy, and that’s winning,” said Atwall. “We’re not looking for a drop-off in any regard.” Blokker said he’s grateful to the community for embracing the Raiders, supporting them, sponsoring them and cheering them on over the years. “I was always extremely honoured to be the coach of this team and I leave that way,” he said. “At the end of it I just hope that sports fans and people in Nanaimo will remember what I’ve done here as a coach and remember me as a winner … It’s been one hell of a run.”

Robbie has been a stray cat for the past couple years, we tried to find his home but we didn’t have any luck. He has just had dental work and is now ready for his new family. We don’t have any info on his previous life but he has been around other cats and seems to keep to himself. Robbie does have a longer coat and will need to be brushed every couple days to help keep it nice. This kitty has been quite shy so far but is getting a bit more settled, we are still getting to know him. ROBBIE Little Gypsy is a sweet and comical dog! She came to us when her owners could no longer care for her. She is smaller than the photos seem, but she is a lot of dog! She will make an excellent agility partner as she is fast and agile. This little fence jumper bonds quickly with her people and is very easy to train. She will need an active home, and one that can provide her with the mental stimulation that her active brain craves. If you are looking for a dog to work with, consider Gypsy! LITTLE GYPSY
We have learned that Daisy would prefer a home where she can be the only cat. Daisy would do best in an indoor/outdoor home as she gets a little stir crazy inside. She has a short low maintenance coat requiring occasional grooming, Daisy loves attention and cuddles as long as it’s on her terms. she may not be suitable with small children.

KARL YU/THE NEWS BULLETIN
Fitness instructor Angel Jones offers women-only classes twice a week at the aquatic centre in Nanaimo. Jones started off as a student in fitness classes with parks and recreation and now leads the classes as an instructor.
“I participate with my class. The biggest thing for me is, when I was working out, I like to see an instructor that can tell you what to do and do it. Not just tell you what to do and stand there and watch you do it,” Jones said. And while she takes her profession seriously, she is
careful not to take it too seriously. “They say you have to be slightly insane to be a fitness instructor; I’m OK with that,” she said. “You have to be able to laugh at yourself because you know what? Sometimes we make mistakes too.
Jones will also be running a Zumba class in the new year and there is child-minding available for mothers wanting to attend the Full Body Fitness class. For more information on classes offered by parks and rec go to www.nanaimo.ca. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Plenty of activities for families at Christmas
I
pArks And rEC offers skating, workout sessions ahead of New Year’s Eve event.
By Tammy Toor I love the holiday season. The tradition of holiday decorations, music, food and gatherings help us reconnect with family, friends and our community. The holiday season is a particularly busy one for the Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture. To help you in your planning and connecting with your community, here is a list of things happening throughout the month of December. We’d love to see you there! Special Holiday Programs – if you have an elementary school child, your child should have been given our “Winter Wonders” flyer full of holiday programs, including our new Camp Frosty Frolic for ages 5 to 10 years old. There are
many other program opportunities to keep you and your family entertained during the Christmas break. Didn’t get one? Check out our website under “What’s New” for a copy. Special Holiday Fitness and Wellness Drop-in Programs at Oliver Woods Community Centre – Between Dec. 9-20, work out for only $8 or bring a non-perishable food donation for Loaves and Fishes and pay only $5. In addition, bring a workout buddy on Dec. 10, 12, 17 and 19 and you get twofor-one admission. Check out our website for full details. Winter Wonderland – From Dec. 26-30, the Frank Crane Arena will be transformed into “Rideau Canal” and all public skating sessions will only cost $1 with free
skate and helmet rentals. Come and see why this annual event has become so popular with the community. Finale 2013 – Yee haw! The city’s biggest and best family New Year’s Eve party takes place at Beban Park with a country theme. There will be an early countdown for the younger ones at 8 p.m., and a second countdown takes place at 10 p.m. Tickets are only $25 for a family of four or $10 individually. Enjoy an evening of swimming, skating and games with Nanaimo’s very own Clippers Hockey Team, crafts with staff from Kool & Child and entertainment from Jake West, Bill Perison, The Big Mess, Vibe Dancers, Sara Raymond

and Aunti Bobbi the Clown. I can’t think of a better way to bring in 2014 with the entire family. Still looking for that perfect gift? How about a Parks, Recreation and Culture gift card? They can be used for program registrations, drop-in admissions, facility rentals and more. They come in denominations of $20, $50 or $100 and are reloadable. This holiday season, buy a $20 or more gift card for your chance
to win a $50 gift card. Contest ends Dec. 24. For more information on our programs and special events, check out our Activity Guide, visit our website at www. nanaimo.ca or call us at 250-756-5200. From all of us here at parks, recreation and culture, we wish you and your family the best of the holiday season and a happy, healthy new year. u Tammy Toor is a graphics design specialist with Nanaimo Parks, Recreation and Culture.
