Kevin Richter, the assistant deputy minister with the B.C. ministry of transportation, said the purpose of Monday’s meeting was to hear from islanders as to how potential cuts would affect families, jobs and livelihoods and then take those comments back to the government. But some were skeptical that what was said would even make a differ-
ence. “I find this a really disgusting thing to do,” said Joe Duprey, owner of the Landing Pub on Quadra Island. “You guys have already made up your mind. My wife said to me, ‘You’re going to a ferry meeting tonight?’ and I said, ‘Yeah, because it’s life or death.’ And that’s what it is.” BC Ferries plans to eliminate the 10 p.m. sailing from Quadra Island and the 10:30 p.m. sailing leaving Campbell River every day as well as the 11 p.m. sailing leaving Quadra and the 11:30 p.m. from Campbell Continued on Pg. 5

Ferries: Emotions run high River on Fridays and Saturdays. Paul Ryan, chair of the Campbell River, Quadra and Cortes Island Ferry Advisory Committee, said if the proposed cuts go ahead, islanders won’t be able to leave the island in the evenings. “Shift workers, hospital employees, people who go to night school, BC Hydro, people who want to go to a movie, or go out to dinner won’t be able to do that if you cut that last run,” said Ryan who added there are other ways for BC Ferries to come up with the $18.9 million it’s been ordered by the government to find in savings. “The basic problem is this: The government refuses to fund BC Ferries to the level they fund every other transportation system. “This is out and out discrimination.” North Island MLA Claire Trevena – transportation critic for the NDP – said, for islanders, the ferry is part of their highway system and likened the ferry cuts to closing a highway down at night due to low traffic volumes. “Imagine going to Dease Lake and doing a study and saying ‘there’s not enough people on your road so we’re going to close the road between nine in the evening and six in the morning,’” Trevena said. “There’s people who live in Fernie, who live in Dease Lake, who live in Prince George who are not exploited to use their highways.” Several people who spoke during the meeting told the panel BC Ferries should be put back under the government’s Ministry of Transportation to reduce the pressure on BC Ferries to raise fares and cut sailings. Quadra Island resident John Clarke kicked off the meeting by walking in front of the panel while holding a sign that read ‘Highway’ in thick black script. He taped the sign to the back of chair and placed it on the

special thing that someone in a city is never going to know.” Tom Skillman, human resources manager at Walcan Seafoods on Quadra Island, said rising fares have already made it more difficult to recruit employees. “We had over 25 people this year change their minds about working for us because of the ferry,” Skillman said. “We were short-staffed all season. We interviewed three times as many people this season than we normally do.” A teenaged girl also expressed her displeasure with rising ferry fares and the difficulty service reductions will pose on students. “We’re losing so much of our after school programs, many run until after nine,” she said. “If you cut everything after nine o’clock, I’m going to tell you, a lot of parents are going to move off (Quadra).” She then gave the panel a lesson in mathematics, explaining that BC Ferries has reached the vertex of its parabola – the highest point, by jacking up fares and still running a deficit. “If they can’t do the math, I’ll do it for him.” The meeting wrapped up after 9 p.m., more than three hours after it began. The session was part of BC Ferries’ community engagement process which is travelling across the province to communities where the ferry corporation is targeting sailing cuts. Ferries is looking to save $14 million with cutbacks to its minor and northern routes effective April 2014. Further changes are expected on the three major ferr y routes between the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island by April 2016 for a further $4.9 million in savings.

stage to set the tone for the meeting. Clarke also gathered a small group who broke out in song with a round of My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean, with the words altered to “Bring back my highway to me.” That spurred on the crowd of at least 500 people who overflowed the community centre, and who were clearly angry. “We’re all pissed off!” shouted one woman in the crowd during Abram’s speech. Abram said his community is insulted by BC Ferries’ plan to eliminate sailings to and from the island and was pleased to see so many people show up to take a stand. “We will continue to shuffle the deck chairs on the Titanic while the ship is sinking,” Abram said. “We will not allow our community to go down with the ship. We had to come, we had to be here and tell you you’re wrong and we did it well. It’s incredible. I haven’t seen the hall this full. “The plan’s a joke, it’s an insult to our intelligence and it’s a crime against our people.” One woman, a stay-athome mom, said BC Ferries is making it increasingly hard to stay on Quadra Island – a place she has called home since she was a child and a place she wants to raise her family. “If I take my son to the Christmas market and he gets lost, I know in minutes 10 people will take him by the hand and return him to me because they know me, and they know I’m his mom,” she said. “This is a really special place to live but sometimes we need to get off the island but we can’t do that if you raise the cost of fares. How are we supposed to live? “We choose to live here because my son will know each and every person and that’s a really

City will offer sewer service as part of southern boundary adjustment
At an in-camera meeting on Dec. 3, council confirmed the city will offer sewer service to Area D properties closest to Campbell River’s southern boundary if the property owners agree to a boundary adjustment proposal that would bring those properties into the municipality. According to a city press release, the offer for sewer services will be: n Extended to 208 properties (estimated population: 480) n Offered at the $9,360 contribution rate previously approved by an Area D referendum in 2006 n Conditional upon the availability of an existing $3.4 million grant for Area D sewer services “Respecting the costs for sewer that people supported in the 2006 referendum demonstrates that council is working to offer the most affordable way for people in Area D to get municipal sewer services,” says Coun. Mary Storry, who holds the public works portfolio for council. The city’s bylaw connection fee (currently $1,800) would also apply once people hooked up to sewer service. The proposal to join the municipality will also be offered to properties south to McGimpsey Road, on the understanding that the city will pursue grants to extend sewer services in this second area as soon as possible in the foreseeable future.
WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2013 | CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR | 5
“Council decided to make the offer to join the municipality to both areas, planning to implement sewer services only to the closest area at first because it’s clear that the existing grant is insufficient to affordably fund both areas at this time,” adds Coun. Storry. “This phased approach is consistent with the way the city installed sewers following a 1991 boundary adjustment in north Campbell River and Quinsam Heights, where sewer services were installed as funding was secured.” Sewer services could be available in the first area as early as 2016. But Brenda Leigh, the regional district director who represents Area D, said joining the city is not something her residents want. “We do not want to join Campbell River,” Leigh said at a regional district board meeting in July. “Every molecule of my body does not want to join Campbell River. I will fight this process. I don’t have anything against Campbell River but I love the countryside, I love our atmosphere, I love the rural character of our community. I think this move by Campbell River is completely disrespectful of me as a director who has served this area, and for the residents.” A spring referendum on the proposal will be held for property owners in the potential boundary
extension area. The total referendum area covers 537 properties (estimated population: 1,235). If people support the boundary expansion, the city’s offer will be conditional upon the Strathcona Regional District agreeing to transfer the existing $3.4 million grant, and on senior governments agreeing to extend the availability for the grant (currently due to expire unless a sewer project is completed by March 31, 2015). Council directed city staff to work with regional district staff to formally apply to the province to extend the grant timeline. Council also agreed that Henry Road would be the long-term limit of the city’s southern boundary because this area most closely represents urban land use and density that is consistent with what is found within city limits. “The city’s goal is to provide a cost-effective and practical solution to address the public health and environmental concerns created by failing septic fields in part of Area D,” says Mayor Walter Jakeway. “Our next step will be to provide information about service improvements and related costs to help city and Area D residents decide whether they support extending the city boundary and sewer service. “We aim to share all the details in the new year.”

Homeowners looking at 2.25 per cent tax increase www.CampbellRivermirror.com www.CampbellRiverMirror.com
Business rate held, but hike in forest land rate launched Kristen Douglas

Campbell River homeowners are facing a 2.25 per cent, or $31.72, tax increase after day one of budget planning wrapped up Monday. Council met at city hall for about three hours to work out its base budget – the first of three parts to the 2014-2018 financial plan. Service level change requests as well as the capital budget will be deliberated Jan. 16 and Jan. 29 respectively. In addition to the 2.25 per cent residential tax hike as of Monday afternoon, council also decided on a zero per cent tax increase for the business class. “I don’t think the medium and small businesses have fully recovered from the (economic) hit,” said Coun. Andy Adams who has the finance portfolio. “I know most business owners are also residential property owners and to give them a double whammy I don’t think is the prudent thing to do.” Coun. Claire Moglove said businesses are vital to the health of the community and as such, the city needs to take care of

them. “It’s businesses that drive the economy of Campbell River and I agree with Coun. Adams that I don’t think businesses have recovered from the economic hit,” Moglove said. Still, despite the business sector not seeing a tax increase, council did take steps towards lessening the tax burden on the residential sector by increasing taxes for managed forest lands and utilities (class 2). While the city has more managed forest lands than any other B.C. municipality, Campbell River raises less money from that tax class than other Island communities because of its historically low tax rates. But over the next three years, taxes will be set at the average tax rate charged by other B.C. communities, which will generate an additional $100,031 in revenue for the city. Council also elected to increase taxes for the utilities class 2 sector, starting in 2014, but have the increases phased in over four years, with the first year’s increase to be one-half of the increase in the three subsequent years. Coun. Claire Moglove said her reasoning for pitching the smaller increase in year one is to accommodate most of the companies that have already done their budgets for next year. “In the utilities class,
I have some sympathy that they’ve already done their budget,” Moglove said. “However, I think phasing in the increase in 2014 is still reasonable.” Coun. Adams agreed with Moglove, and said she had “found a compromise” that relieves the residential homeowners from shouldering the brunt of city taxation and increasing what he said has been an “extremely favourable rate for utilities in Campbell River.” Coun. Larry Samson disagreed and thought it should be phased in over five years to make the increases more manageable while Mayor Walter Jakeway said for the private companies, changing their budgets now would be “extremely dif-

The taxpayers and residents of Campbell River know that roads need to be fixed and drains need to be fixed.” But t he maj or it y of council felt it was too early to be adding another percentage increase and Moglove’s motion was defeated. Our View
Changes to hockey viewing In the grand scheme of things, perhaps a $5 billion deal for the rights to broadcast National Hockey League games is not a big talking point, not important or serious enough to take up space on the pages of a newspaper. We say: Who says editorial But hey, who said we had to be we have to be serious all the time? Numbers show millions of Canadians serious all of the watch hockey, every week. More people time? in this province watch the Canucks than anything else on TV — period. So, what does this new deal giving Rogers the bulk of the broadcasting rights mean to hockey fans in this province?
At first glance, it’s disappointing. Or at least it’s a little annoying from a viewer standpoint. Perhaps B.C. fans who live in a vacuum and watch nothing but the Canucks don’t notice, but the Rogers Sportsnet Pacific broadcasts are, well, kind of bush league in comparison to games shown by TSN or CBC. In-game graphics are woeful, including the seemingly simple task of displaying the penalty-time clock in a reliable fashion, or, goodness forbid, a semi-frequent outof-town scoreboard or stats/information about players and their minor/junior hockey origins. John Shorthouse is a good game-caller, but he’s no Jim Hughson, Chris Cuthbert or even Gord Miller.
Is it too much to ask for some actual analysis that goes beyond the predictable goalie-had-no-chance-on-thatone schtick from a former tender? One bright spot that may come of this Rogers-NHL deal is choice. Real hockey fans want to see MontrealToronto or Pittsburgh-Washington or Chicago-Los Angeles games that are loaded with B.C. and Canadianborn stars. TSN and CBC have provided many opportunities for that in the past, and we’re hearing that won’t go away, might even be bolstered, by Rogers. At this point, all we can do is observe with interest. – Black Press

Snowfall goes unnoticed
Last Thursday during the day and early Friday morning, Campbell River received about 10 cm of snow over an 18 hour period. Not a heavy snowfall but enough with moderate traffic to create treacherous driving conditions. This snowfall accumulation seems to have gone largely unnoticed by local city road maintenance crews; by mid afternoon Friday only a few main streets had received any attention. For example Rockland Road beside Timberline Secondary/North Island College was untouched in a very icy condition. In view of several years of steep property tax increases I believe the residents of Campbell River should receive more prompt snow clearing from our significant secondary streets. What would happen if we had a one-metre snowfall over several days? The absence of measureable snowfall during one year does not mean we should mothball our snowclearing equipment. With our multimillion dollar city budget I would hope for more planning and attention to our basic needs, including a night shift. We can do better. For something that only occasionally makes an appearance, snow certainly does get people around here talking. And the focus of the conversation is usually snowplowing – whose road got plowed, whose didn’t, and have you ever seen it so bad? Funny thing is, the conditions that stress a lot of Campbell Riverites are tolerated each and every day, all winter by most Canadians. This past week we’ve had a rare combination of conditions that saw a snowfall followed by lingering subzero temperatures. Normally, we get snow and then it begins to melt almost immediately. It’s not often we see the snow stick around like it did this past weekend. But sure enough, come Monday morn-
ing there in my inbox was an e-mail about somebody scolding the city for not plowing the roads. Twenty-five years ago, I moved to Campbell River from Whitehorse, Yukon. The projected high for Whitehorse on Monday morning when I wrote this, was minus eight. That’s a temperature that gets Yukoners hailing the balmy conditions. My point is, it ain’t that bad, folks. Those roads you saw in Campbell River with a combination of partially bare ruts and snow packed so hard it’s like ice, are every day conditions for Whitehorse drivers. As they are for Prince George, Edmonton…well, everywhere east of the Coast Mountains. I understand if people are not used to it here and driving on it makes them
nervous. That’s fine. Adjust your driving accordingly. But when people start demanding their road be plowed as soon as the first snow flakes fall, well, it gets kind of embarrassing. It’s no wonder people look at British Columbians as just a little bit flaky, pardon the pun. I always reflect on the words of previous Mirror publisher Jim Hayes, an Edmonton transplant, who advised a new hire to be wary, not of the road conditions, but of the other drivers who don’t know how to drive in snow. It cracks me up to watch drivers pull up to a traffic light and then, when it turns green, stomp on the accelerator and go nowhere as their tires spin like a saw blade. Take your time, accelerate slowly and
allow your tires – yes, even your all-season radials – to grip the snow. It doesn’t take much to start them spinning. Also, leave plenty of space between you and the next vehicle ahead so that if they hit their brakes, you won’t have to; you can brake slowly and that way your wheels won’t bind and send you into the ditch like you’re riding on rubber skis. The key word is slowly. Give yourself more time. Drive slower. Take your time. Try to relax. Just think, “A Manitoban can do this, so can I.” But most of all, I’d like you all to just stop panicking. Everybody else is laughing. Canada, my country is winter, a writer once said. Well, not on this thin strip of waterlogged forest in the far west.

Mayor’s opposition to compost centre costs him seat on regional board Kristen Douglas Campbell RiveR miRRoR
Council has removed the mayor from the Strathcona Regional District board. That means Mayor Walter Jakeway will not only not be allowed to sit as a director on the regional district board but he also will not be on the hospital board or the solid waste management board and all other regional district commissions and committees. The mayor was appointed by council to the regional district board after his election as mayor of the city in 2011. Councillors Mary Storry, Claire Moglove, Larry Samson, and Ron
Kerr are also directors on the board and were also appointed by council. However, the directors representing Campbell River on the board alternate every year and councillors Storry and Samson were to rotate off and be replaced by councillors Ryan Mennie and Andy Adams, according to recommendations made by the mayor. That changed during council’s financial planning meeting Tuesday morning when Moglove made her own motion to replace Jakeway with Storry, which was approved by council in a 5-2 vote, with Jakeway and Coun. Ron Kerr opposed. Moglove said she thought it would be
best to have Storry sit on the board rather than Jakeway. “The main reason is one of council’s strategic priorities is securing a regional compost centre in Campbell River,” Moglove said. “It would be an economic stimulant for the economy and create jobs. The mayor has made it very clear he doesn’t agree with this project, he’s voted against it both times it’s come to council and he was the lone Campbell River representative on the solid waste board that voted against keeping the Compost Education Centre open.”

Please be advised that in the December 6 flyer, on page 19A, the Fitbit Force Wireless Activity And Sleep Wristband (Web Code: 10270645/44/47) is currently NOT available for purchase. Also on page 26, the LG 4.6 Cu. Ft. Front Load Washer (WM3050CW) (WebCode: 10265902) was advertised with incorrect specs. Please be advised that the washer's CORRECT capacity is 4.6 cu. ft., NOT 4.0 cu. ft. and it does NOT have a steam function, as previously advertised. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused our valued customers.
Moglove said that’s a problem because Campbell River councillors need to be united on external boards. “It’s important council sticks together as one united voted at the solid waste board because it’s a weighted vote,” Moglove said. “It’s important to have everyone vote together if we want to keep the Compost Education Centre open.” But Mayor Jakeway said he sees things differently. “They say I don’t support local composting but it’s their way to stick it to me,” Jakeway said. “That’s their excuse.
They’re just trying to play low ball politics.” Jake way did vote opposed to the compost centre on two occasions, basing his vote on what a consultant, Andy Keir of AECOM, who was hired by the solid waste management told the solid waste board at a meeting in September. “He said you’re wasting your time; you’re building a system that’s far too complex and far too complex means far too expensive – his suggestion was to simplify the whole system and don’t even bother with organics,” Jakeway said at a council meeting in Octo-
ber. “He said you’re worrying about an incredible amount of water and it’s not worth the money.” Meanwhile, Moglove said the other reason she elected to go with Storry over Jakeway was that
Storry has become an unofficial spokesperson for solid waste. Moglove said Storry has been liaising with city staff on the issues and reporting back to the solid waste board.

No.....it is not a good idea. Christmas is typically a crazy, hectic, chaotic time and definitely NOT the right time to bring a puppy into your household. A better idea is to wait until after the holidays to add the puppy, instead wrap up a leash and collar, dish, treats, books on selecting the right breed for Cathy Merrithew your family and early puppy training, and let the kids know they can help choose the puppy once things quiet down. You want to be able to start your puppy off right by devoting the time and attention needed to housetraining - something that I would guarantee you won’t have during Christmas. Find a positive reward based training class and make sure to sign puppy up as soon as possible. 8 weeks is not too early to begin the critical process of socialization and helping puppy learn it’s fun to experience new things! Make sure everyone in the family comes to class so you’re all on the same page as far as methods. “A dog is for life, not just for Christmas”.

It can be very frustrating to see your child going through challenges that you Laura Magowan are unable to help them with. It is even more frustrating when you are capable of helping them and they are unwilling to accept your advice. Sunrise Learning provides a safe professional environment for students to access the math help that they need. You have your choice of days and times and can book a time each week for your child to attend. If your child attends Carihi they can even walk to the Centre during a study block and get help during the day.

Rubimeds are homeopathic combination remedies Dr. Ingrid Pincott ND Naturopathic Physician developed in Switzerland over 15 years ago, that work very well at helping with anxiety and depression even in situations where people are taking antidpressants. We try and avoid antidepressants as much as possible and many times this can be done with combinations of Rubimeds and neutraceuticals. For starters teenagers are very vulnerable to what music they listen to and how much time they spend on social media. Their bedrooms should be free of all electronics for rejuvenating sleep as well! And homeopathy does work!

While it is impossible to prevent every accident or illness from happening, pet owners can take steps to minimize the chances that their pet will be injured or made ill. This time of year, needles, thread, tinsel and ribbons are often a fun toy for cats to play with. Be careful with needles and thread. Even though it can be quite cute, cats should never be allowed to play with string, thread, tinsel, floss or yarn. Barbs on the tongue make it very difficult for cats to spit the string out and they may end up swallowing it. As it is swallowed the thread may get wrapped around the base of the Dr. Peter Woodward tongue resulting in a “linear foreign body”. The normal peristaltic waves of the gastrointestinal tract carry the ends of the thread through the stomach and into the intestines. Since the thread cannot pass through the gastrointestinal tract because it is caught under the tongue, it acts like a saw or knife, slicing into the intestines as they move around it, trying to propel it forward. Emergency surgery is required to relieve this type of obstruction. Cat owners that like to sew or do needlepoint need to be extra careful. Houseplants are also highly attractive for Cats. Cats love to chew on houseplants, some of which can be poisonous. Injuries include mouth ulcers, diarrhea and vomiting, cardiac effects, neurologic disease, and death. The list of poisonous plants is quite long. Some of the more common house plants that can be toxic include Rhododendron, Philodendron, Easter and Tiger Lilys, Poinsettia and Mistletoe. Majority of our Campbell River pet shops sell cat grasses that can be grown inside and are safe for cats to chew on. Visit ASPCA (www.aspca.org) for more information on toxic and non-toxic plants or contact your family veterinarian. Until then, keep a close eye on your pets this Christmas and have a Happy & Safe New Year!

Single paper roses were gingerly placed in a gardening pail in Spirit Square Friday afternoon to commemorate Canada’s National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. About 27 Campbell Riverites braved the freezing temperatures to take part in a vigil for the young female engineering students who were gunned down at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal on Dec. 6, 1989. Gunman Marc Lepine killed 14 women and wounded 13 others, mostly women, during his shooting rampage before shooting and killing himself. At Friday’s ceremony, people took turns reading a short script describing each of the late women’s hopes and dreams. Most were tragically only days away from graduation and already had their first jobs lined up. They never made it. Mayor Walter Jakeway, who spoke as a special guest, said the day of remembrance is an opportunity to remember and to ensure the event doesn’t repeat itself. “It’s certainly a day to reflect on what went on and let’s make sure it doesn’t happen again,” Jakeway said. “We’ve got to focus on it. Don’t ever let it go away (because) one person is too many to lose.” Valery Puetz, executive director of the Campbell River and North Island Transition Society, said the day also brings to mind tragedies a bit closer to home – the stag-

Gloria Jackson of Campbell River Family Services, who emceed Friday’s National Day of Remembrance on Violence Against Women ceremony, looks on as a women who attended the vigil places her paper rose in the pail. The ceremony was held Friday afternoon in Spirit Square.
gering number of women who have been killed or have gone missing along the stretch of Highway 16 between Prince George and Prince Rupert as well as the women who have disappeared from Vancouver’s poorest district. “We remember the missing women along the Highway of Tears and we also remember the
missing women on the Downtown East Side,” Puetz said. “It’s also a day communities can consider taking concrete actions to eliminate violence against women.” North Island MLA Claire Trevena, said the province as a whole needs to step up and improve conditions for women.
“We’ve got a pretty shameful record here in B.C.,” Trevena said. “We’ve all got to do so much better.” The short vigil concluded with a minute of silence and the placing of the paper roses before everyone went their own separate ways into the cold.

City councillors question committee’s sub committees
www.CampbellRivermirror.com www.CampbellRiverMirror.com
Kristen Douglas Campbell RiveR miRRoR
A city committee’s actions, which some councillors perceived as questionable, are prompting a bylaw review. C ounci l lors Andy Ad ams and C l ai re Moglove were concerned about sub-committees the city’s Community Services, Recreation and Culture Commission had formed. The two councillors came upon the commission’s actions while reading the minutes from the group’s last meeting. “In looking at the minutes I see that this commission has set up two task forces and I’m just bringing into question that the commissions, I believe, were set up under the understanding that we were to engage members of the public and appointees to the committee,” said Coun. Andy Adams during the Dec. 3 council meeting. “And when I see a task force made up of two councillors and only one member of the commission I question as to whether that balance is
(prospective) of what the guiding principles of the commission are.” Coun. Claire Moglove also thought having such slight public representation defeated the purpose of the commission. “I think that in setting up the commission, the main purpose is to get a broader view of the community on various community issues,” Moglove said. “So while I do agree with the idea of forming sub-committees on particular issues I do question the appointment of a three-person sub-committee, two of whom are councillors.” Moglove said she thought the bylaw which governs the city’s commissions should go back to the city’s governance select committee for a second look to see if tweaks are necessary. But Coun. Ron Kerr, chair of the Community Services, Recreation and Culture Commission, said the councillors misunderstood what happened at the commission’s meeting. “The initial one, with the seniors charter, is neither a task force or a sub-committee it was
Blitz nails drinking drivers
Saturday’s province-wide blitz resulted in five motorists being charged with impaired driving offences under the criminal code. One of those was from Campbell River. Local Mounties were among 97 detachments across B.C. who took part in the blitz to nab drivers under the influence of alcohol. A total of 32,877 motorists were stopped resulting in: n Five impaired driving charges. n 104 immediate roadside prohibitions for 90 days with 30 vehicles impounded. n 94 warn results. n 17 roadside suspensions for drugs. In Campbell River, along with the one impaired driver, two others were given 90-day roadside prohibitions. “As always, in order to ensure the safety of all on our roads, the holiday season will result in increased road checks for impaired drivers,” said Staff Sgt. Troy Beauregard.

basically a working committee that was forwarding this back to the meeting just so we could have a quick discussion,” Kerr said. “The other one, it was not a task force by any means…and it was just a starting point for discussion.” Moglove was satisfied with Kerr’s explanation but recommended the commission’s bylaw be reviewed anyways. “It’s not just the issue of the sub-committee,
I think that the commissions have been in existence for nearly a year and I think both commissions have had some input as to what’s worked well and what’s not worked well,” said Moglove who added that “some of the paragraphs (of the bylaw) are confusing at best.” Council agreed and voted in favour of having the bylaw reviewed by the governance committee.

The Campbell River Festival of Film is a gift Looking for the perfect gift? Well look no further than the Campbell River Festival of Film. Festival winter season’s passes are being sold in time for Christmas. The passes are available at the Tidemark box office or online and sell for $45 plus tax and applicable fees. They entitle the holder to five wonderful films and include a series of dynamic shorts and draws at each screening. The Festival is the result of a successful partnership that was formed 16 years ago with the Toronto International Film Festival Film Circuit. This partnership allows the Campbell River group to book films and shorts directly from Toronto that would not normally make their way to our Campbell River movie theatres. The organizers want everyone to know that all the proceeds go directly back into our community. Each year, bursaries and equipment are given to local students and schools. Equipment
has also been donated to the Tidemark Theatre to help make it possible to showcase these great films. The winter season will start Jan. 14 with Cas and Dylan followed by Burt’s Buzz on Jan. 28. The Hunt will be featured on Feb. 11 with Siddharth playing on Feb. 25. The season finale will be on March 11 and that title is Gabrielle, Canada’s entry as best foreign film for the Academy Awards. The organizers would like to remind filmgoers

BROC ..... MY LIFE Thoughts & Memories
Every now and then My heart wanders back in time And all those familiar feelings Awaken .... Come flooding back, Tears flowing along with The memories in my mind, In my dreams As if they were only yesterday. Sometimes, it catches me by surprise The way my heart will ache As I recall your voice Your laugh, Your kindness, The smile on your face. I may never know the answers To the “why? To the “what if ? Or the many other questions; But I know this much No matter how much time passes, You will always be in my memories My dreams, my thoughts, My tears, and on my lips; I will always love you.
Rest in peace, my beloved son. All my eternal love, Dad.

Ashton Birchard (20) of the REHN Enterprises Atom A Tyees deals with a sprawling Nanaimo forward in front of the net, but the visitors couldn’t do much wrong in skating to a 10-1 win.
It was freezing outside, but the Storm was red-hot Friday night inside the Rod Brind’Amour Arena. The division-leading Campbell River Storm took on the hapless Kerry Park Islanders and led 4-0 after one period and 6-0 after two, in skating to an 8-0 victory. Storm netminder Jack Surgenor earned his sixth shutout of the season. Campbell River outshot the Islanders 48-25. Surgenor now leads the Vancouver Island Junior B Hockey League with a .930 save percentage and is third with a 2.09 goals against average. Offensively, Trent Johnson led the charge with three goals and an assist. Jamie Severs also notched a hat trick while Zach Sanderson also had a three-point game – a goal and two assists – along with 17 minutes in penalties. Alex Brewer and Brendan de Vries also had three-point nights with three assists apiece. de Vries increased his league points lead to 52 – 19 goals and 33 assists. Friday’s contest was the only game the Storm played on the weekend, but they have a busy three days beginning tomorrow. On Thursday night the Storm take on the league-leading Cougars in Victoria. On Friday, 7:30 p.m., Campbell River is back at the Rod Brind’Amour Arena to battle the Nanaimo Buccaneers. And then on Saturday, the local boys travel to Parksville to play the Oceanside Generals. Friday’s game should be a good one, Campbell River and Nanaimo are currently tied atop the North Division with 38 points apiece. The Storm have one game in hand. Victoria leads the South, and the league, with 48 points.

for Health program. Sayward received $20,000 for a Seniors Drop-In Activity Centre Health and Wellness program. “Seniors helped build our province and are the cornerstone of families and communities,” said Linda Larson, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health for Seniors. “The Agefriendly Community Planning and Project Grant program reflects our work with local governments, Union of British Columbia Municipalities and other partners to achieve a vision where people of all ages and abilities feel included and valued in their communities.” Applications for the 2014 round of agefriendly grants were reviewed by a committee of staff from the Union of British Columbia Municipalities and the Ministry of Health. Sixteen out of the 26 communities approved to receive a grant had not received funding under the program between 2009 and 2013. Close to $500,000 will be awarded to this year’s successful grant applicants. “The approved applications are from rural and urban communities throughout the province,” said Rhona Martin, president of the Union of British Columbia Municipalities. “We are pleased to see so many new recipients in the current round of funding.” The Age-friendly Community Planning and Project Grant program is a partnership between the Government of British Columbia and the Union of British Columbia Municipalities. Agefriendly grants have funded over 200 projects in over 120 communities.

Beijing House Restaurant’s benefit dinner raises $1,500 for Philippines typhoon relief
Pastor Larry Martin of Discovery Community Church in Campbell River receives a cheque for $1,468 towards typhoon relief in the Philippines from Beijing House Restaurant owners Eric Zhao and Cherry Che.
A special dinner to raise donations for victims of the recent typhoon in the Philippines was sold out and raised about $1,500, according to the event’s organizers. More than 120 people attended the Beijing House Restaurant in the Campbellton area of Campbell River on Tuesday, Dec. 3 and each adult paid $12.50 plus GST for a special buffet of traditional dishes from northern China, with all of the food proceeds donated to Mennonite Central Committee
(MCC) Canada via the Discovery Community Church of Campbell River. The food proceeds of $1,468 plus other associated cash and cheque donations added up to more than $1,700 to be matched by the Government of Canada. The idea for the benefit dinner arose when restaurant owners Eric Zhao and Cherry Che were watching news reports of the devastation caused by Typhoon Haiyan around the city of Tacloban in eastern Philippines Nov. 5 to 7. “When Cherry saw all
