Mailman beaten, robbed Thieves steal mail, hit him in the head by M on i sh a M ar ti n s staff reporter

A postal worker was beaten and robbed in east Maple Ridge on Thursday. The 67-year-old man was delivering mail to a community box outside a gated housing complex on 116th Avenue at 239th Street around 1 p.m., when he was approached by two men. The suspects demanded mail and his keys. One of them then struck the postal worker in the head with a “hard” object, according the Ridge Meadows RCMP. After the assault and theft, the suspects drove off in a green-grey SUV, which had two more men in it. “This brazen, mid-day attack is very concerning for police and our community,” Cpl. Alanna Dunlop said. “Police investigators are working hard to identify suspects and bring them before the courts. Suspects did steal a quantity of mail in the robbery.” See Attack, p12

Maple Ridge to be a city? District considering application to change status by Phil M elnyc h u k staff reporter

How does the City of Maple Ridge sound? Depending on a staff report next spring, council could decide to apply to the provincial government and change its status from district municipality to city.

Coun. Al Hogarth raised the issue earlier and the economic development will review the pros and cons of changing the label in the new year. “The City of Maple Ridge – I kind of like the sounds of that,” Hogarth said Tuesday. “We’re not just a sleepy little town.” Hogarth pointed out that Maple Ridge, with a population of about 78,000, is one of the largest 100 municipalities in Canada. He acknowledged there could be pros

and cons, and that both sides had to be considered before making the change. Becoming known as a city will make it easier to attract investment, tourism Daykin and improve interaction with senior governments. The same goes when trying

to attract overseas investments, he added. And out of the eight regional growth centres identified by Metro Vancouver, Maple Ridge is the only one known as a district. “District municipality – what does that mean?” Hogarth asked. The topic has been discussed for a while, added Mayor Ernie Daykin. “I can see, everybody calls it the city anyways. Are people more used to the term [city]? Yup,” he said. See City, p13

Old fashioned Christmas in the downtown District turns back clock on street decorations by Phil M elnyc h u k staff reporter

ombine the latest in hightech LED icicle lights and some old-fashioned decorations from the 1960s and you have Christmas in downtown Maple Ridge. The combination of old and new is drawing lots of comments on Facebook and elsewhere, says district spokesman Fred Armstrong. The blend of technologies wasn’t really planned, but it just worked out that way, he explained. Usually every year the district drags its 55 old candy cane and Christmas bell decorations out of storage and hangs them from light poles along the main streets. “They were originally purchased by the downtown business improvement association in 1966,” Armstrong said. But the years took a toll and the plastic had faded and cracked the bells, and the displays were showing their age and becoming a bit hokey. Then earlier this year, a dis-

A district employee found the original mold and a new set of ‘old’ bells were made this year – “bright red again.” trict employee found the original mold used to make the bells. Those were taken to Northwest Plastics in Port Coquitlam and a new set of bells was made using the molds. Work crews then rewired and spiffed up the displays, producing a new set of old 1960s decorations for about $5,000. “When the bells went up, they were bright red again.” Armstrong said the decorations are unique and harken back to an

era 50 years ago. “Essentially, it’s like we’ve gone back to 1966. This is exactly how they looked in 1966. It’s a Bing Crosby Christmas in Maple Ridge.” And to ensure the decorations are seen only in Maple Ridge, no other municipality within 200-kilometres can use them. Any other city that wants to use them outside that range has to pay a small royalty to the District of Maple Ridge.

In addition to the traditional decor, Maple Ridge has also spent $60,000 on streams of icicle lights that hang from tree tops in the downtown. The LED devices have light moving along the vertical tubes, creating the illusion of a dripping icicle. Those have been hung from the top tree canopy throughout the downtown and Memorial Peace Park and look particularly good in the fog, said Armstrong. Those were combined with ex-

isting strings of LED lights and combine for a total of 3.5 kilometres of lights. The new energy-efficient lights use less power than the old lights from the 1960s, said Armstrong. He added that the business association wants to keep some of the lights on beyond Christmas to improve the downtown ambience. “It helps solidify the new [downtown] space. It sort of ties everything together.”

MoTH parcel could join downtown District sees potential uses by Phil M elnyc h u k staff reporter

It used to be a prime place for the homeless, suitably forested and overlooking the Fraser River, safe and obscure, yet not too far from the downtown and the Salvation Army. Now the 28 acres of Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure land along the Haney Bypass is up for sale an d being eyed as another part of the jigsaw puzzle in building the downtown. The property was first on a list of eight possible areas Maple Ridge council is considering for industrial or commercial use, in an attempt to grow its tax base. The property is currently designated residential, but Mayor Ernie Daykin agrees, there are better uses. “It’s got great potential,” he said. “I think there is higher and better use for that property. We’ve got lots of residential.” Last week, Coun. Bob Masse suggested the treed, sloped and ravined area could be a location for a post-secondary institute. With the property

Homeless camps have been found on the property. already owned by the province, it could make it easier financially to create a school of some kind. The property has the Lougheed Highway on the north side and the Haney Bypass on the south side. A stand of trees buffers the residential areas to the west. The West Coast Express Port Haney station is a few blocks away, while Kanaka Creek Regional Park is just downhill from the property. Daykin agrees with former mayor Gordy Robson, who says the public should have a say in how the land is developed. “We need to have that chat,” Daykin said. “It could have great potential. We’ve got to get

away from the 1950s and 1960s planning when it comes to how people get to work.” Robson said the ministry was trying to sell the property when he was Maple Ridge mayor from 2005 to 2008. He questioned why the ministry should get maximum value for the property by selling it for residential use. “The highways department shouldn’t get a windfall, that’s all.” Council is looking at eight possible areas that could be designated for industrial use in an attempt to provide room for enterprise and reduce its dependence on residential taxes. Some areas it’s looking at are the Albion industrial area, south of

Lougheed Highway and west of 240th Street. For Daykin, that could be one of the first areas to attract industry if property consolidation could occur. Maybe the district could offer incentives for development in that area, as well. Business parks or commercial development are also considered a priority on the east side of 105th Avenue, where the district has tacit approval from the Agricultural Land Commission for an exclusion from the reserve. Most of the sites were recommended in a consultant’s report from 2012 that laid out options for industrial or business development. However, after a meeting in September, council added another 250 acres of farmland on the northeast corner of 203rd Street and 128th Avenue to that list. Much of that land had already been sought for exclusion from the Agricultural Land Reserve in 2010. The application was refused. Council has yet to discuss whether it wants to put that property on the list, but Daykin favours doing so. “It’s worth having another conversation.” The property is five minutes from the Golden Ears Bridge he pointed out.

THE NEWS/opinion News Views

Time to grow up Seven years after its smaller neighbour to the west grew up and officially became a city, the District of Maple Ridge is considering an application for the same. Maple Ridge was incorporated as a district in 1874. Pitt Meadows separated from Maple Ridge in 1892, was incorporated as a district in 1914, and officially became a city on Jan. 1, 2007. According to the Local Government Act, a municipality must have a population of more than 5,000 to be considered a city. But if a municipality is bigger than 800 hectares and has an average population of less than five persons per hectare, it must be incorporated as a district. Maple Ridge, with a population exceeding 76,000, would meet that requirement. Pitt Meadows did not at the time, but the province of B.C. waived it. Becoming a city would mean little to most in Maple Ridge, but is key from an economic development marketing perspective – to suggest Maple Ridge isn’t just a horse and berry town anymore. It would instead state that Maple Ridge is not a suburb of any neighbouring community, that, like Pitt Meadows, it is distinct – a place to live, play and work. That would fit well with Maple Ridge’s current plans to identify areas for industrial and employment growth. Maple Ridge needs to evolve beyond the bedroom community it remains. It is trying, with densifying and beautifying the downtown, which has attracted new business. But more is needed, and hopefully becoming a city can assist with that. At the very least, no one would have to explain what a district is anymore – a hokey backwoods term. The City of Maple Ridge. Get used to it. – The News

Ottawa puts on pipeline push VICTORIA – The federal government stepped up its sales pitch for new pipelines to the B.C. coast last week, as it prepares for the imminent release of the federal review panel’s report on the feasibility of the Enbridge Northern Gateway B.C. Views project. Transport Minister Tom Fletcher Lisa Raitt and Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver arrived in Vancouver to release an expert panel’s report on the current state of tanker safety on the West Coast. It was the first of two reports that tell the Stephen Harper government in blunt terms how steep a hill it must climb to enable energy exports to Asia. Oliver gave a speech to the Vancouver Board of Trade the following morning, when he vowed to implement one of the panel’s key recommendations. Legislation is coming to ensure that polluters, not taxpayers, must pay for any environmental damage from resource development and transport. The panel was chaired by Gordon Houston, a former Prince Rupert harbourmaster and CEO of Port Metro Vancouver. Its report details the little-noticed fact that coastal waters around Victoria and Vancouver are already congested with shipping traffic, including Alaska oil tankers, and are at “very high risk” of an incident. Of course, that “very high risk” should be seen in the B.C. context, where there

has never been a serious oil spill at sea in a century of continuous petroleum shipping. The report calls for potential polluters to show they are prepared for a “worst case” discharge like the 1989 Exxon Valdez grounding in Alaska. It tells Ottawa the Canadian Coast Guard must be properly funded to serve as incident command. Oliver recounted efforts made so far, including annual tanker inspections, increased aerial surveillance and marine markers. And he reminded his audience that Canada’s only energy export customer, the U.S., is about to surpass Saudi Arabia as the world’s largest petroleum producer. The second federal report was from Doug Eyford, a lawyer who has been meeting for months with aboriginal communities in northern B.C. and Alberta. He found, as Enbridge has reported, that many aboriginal communities are working with energy producers to get the economic activity they so desperately need. (Most urban people likely don’t believe this, because the conflict-addicted media report mostly protests.) Eyford’s report is no whitewash either. It reminds Ottawa that B.C.’s unresolved aboriginal title and a general lack of trust of both the energy industry and the federal government are key obstacles to the largest economic opportunity in the world today – the rise of Asia. Eyford was dealing with the profusion of gas pipeline projects that are set to cross northern B.C., as well as the Enbridge and Kinder Morgan Canada oil proposals. The entrenched opposition is against oil, particularly heavy oil in tankers. Politics and protesters aside, these

are the facts for B.C. The prosperous provinces in Canada today are Alberta, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland, based mainly on energy development. The rest are struggling. B.C. continues to lose skilled workers to Alberta, where oil sands development continues to expand despite the continuing chorus of U.S.-financed misrepresentation of its environmental impact.

B.C. continues to lose skilled workers to Alberta, where oil sands development continues to expand despite the continuing chorus of U.S.-financed misrepresentation of its environmental impact. It’s a key moment in Canadian history. This is where we see if we can go beyond our status as a client state of the U.S. This year’s B.C. election, where pandering to urban protest backfired on the NDP, suggests a new seriousness in the public mood. More people understand today that our comfortable modern society with freeaccess health care is a fragile thing. We have it better than most of the world, for now.

THE NEWS/letters ‘Bravo to those who attended protest’ Editor, The News: Re: Uninformed reasons (mapleridgenews.com) It is unfortunate, Dan Banov, that your point of view on protesters is so distasteful. I grew up in Quebec, and Quebecers love a good protest. You can tell by the numbers that attend such events. I believe my very first protest was in high school. We used to have to cross a railway track and the infamous 2 and 20 highway in Dorval, Que. to attend our high school. Our leaders of the day had chosen an underground tunnel crossing the tracks, and trusted teenagers and the like to cross by the light for the highway. Early one morning, before daylight on a school day, Olaf Tesky, a promising high school student, was struck and killed at those said lights, and what followed was a campaign to pass the tunnel completely under the fourlane highway. The final event was a protest march of hundreds, which included a large crowd of parents, of all professions, teachers and the principal, and the children of Dorval high school. That campaign didn’t save any money for the district, but I bet it saved lives. I do believe the saying, “The problem isn’t with civil disobedience, it is with civil obedience.” Bravo to all those well educated and those, not so well educated, who attended the Defend our Climate protest. Who steals Christmas lights? Editor, The News: I find it hard to believe that just 15 days before Christmas – me, a single mother to a five-year-old – goes outside to find our Christmas lights have been stolen. Who does this? My five-year-old came out to find the lights that we just put up for Christmas, all gone. And we cannot afford to buy new ones. Seriously - who does this sort of thing? Wendie Hawkins Maple Ridge

Follow the rules or go home Editor, The News: Re: Shot or mask at B.C. hospitals during flu season (The News, Dec. 4). I had the opportunity last Wednesday to attend Ridge Meadows Hospital for the purpose of an ultrasound. As I checked into imaging reception, I requested a mask, given that I had not had a flu shot and noticing the sign clearly displayed asking visitors and staff to wear one under those circumstances. The clerk was very helpful, offering me one and thanking me for requesting it. As I put mine on, I noticed the second clerk with a mask dangling from her ear not covering her mouth or nose. Clearly, she knows the policy, as she’s an employee. Why would she have the mask partway on? To me, she was deliberately circumventing the rule. How is it possible that someone, working in a hospital with so many vulnerable people could be so deliberately selfish and uncaring? How is it possible that she was not sent home for doing

Formula car made in Maple Ridge SFU team enters engineering competition for first time by Phil Mel nyc hu k staff reporter

t has to be fast and efficient and marketable, and if it’s fun to drive, that’s OK too. What counts most is how well it does next May in Barrie, Ont., in the Formula North 2014: Engineering Design Competition, in which the SFU-designed, Maple Ridge racer will compete. That’s not a typical race where cars zoom around the track to see who’s first across the finish line. Instead, a driver will take the car around the track by itself and try to set the best times for acceleration, cornering, endurance and fuel economy. The intended market is the non-professional weekend auto racer. So it has to be cheap, easy to maintain and reliable. It’s the first time, at Spencer Steele’s urging, that SFU Surrey’s School of Mechatronics Systems Engineering has entered the competition. What’s mechatronics? “You know Transformers, the movie? “That’s pretty much what we can do,” said Steele, a Maple Ridge graduate of the program. Mechatronics is a combination of mechanical and electrical engineering. A graduate from the program can be invaluable for a small start-up company which can afford only minimal staffing. The car designed by SF-1 team is a onepiece, uni-body sheet metal frame. It’s powered by 600-cc Yamaha motorcycle engine. One goal is to make the machine as

light as possible, so the car has no rear disc break rotors and instead uses the chain drive sprocket as a brake disc. “We nicknamed it the sprotor.” It’s also an aluminum, uniframe designed for minimum weight. “It took eight months just for the design work, before we were able to cut metal for the frame.” Steele doesn’t expect to finish even in the top five in the competition. “If we can make it mid-pack, that would be good. “A lot of teams don’t even end up finishing the competition because of mechanical failure.” Steele says his school’s mechatronics program is a good one, but the school needs to spend more money so it can compete with the best. “They’re just not willing to take the next step to get on the world wide stage with all the other universities.” UBC has been entering the competition for 23 years, he points out. But SFU doesn’t even have shop space, so the car had to be built at Steele’s shop in east Maple Ridge. So far, the car’s only half complete, with only the engine and rear suspension installed. “The car would just be so much farther along if we just had the proper space. The car is entirely built in Maple Ridge because there’s no shop up at SFU.” Students have identified a possible location on campus for a shop and four months ago wrote to SFU president Andrew Petter.

One of the benefits for the engineering, business, communication, science and interactive technology students who are part of the SFU Formula 1 Club is that it provides valuable, practical hands-on experience. “Employers don’t take kindly to SFU students. They’d rather have a BCIT student. They’re more hands on,” Steele said. He finishes up his program this month and already likely has a job lined up – with Tesla Motors in California. The company makes the all-electric Tesla car. “I would love to say it was the SFU, but it’s the team that did it.” Steele said he didn’t even apply for a job. Tesla just contacted him when they came to Vancouver to check out the car. “It’s kind of fun when it happens like that.”

Ridge financial plan on council’s desk Calls for 3.75 per cent tax increase by Phil M elnyc h u k staff reporter

Why can’t Maple Ridge have municipal garbage and green waste collection? How many firefighters have to respond to a fire? And why are tax increases higher than inflation? It’s up to council if it wants to offer garbage pickup, said finance manager Paul Gill, answering the first question at a budget Q and A session Monday. “You can have whatever you want. It’s a matter of paying for it. Council twice in the last year rejected even studying the issue of single garbage pickup, instead continuing the system where residents contract with private haulers. And when it comes to fighting a house fire,12 is the required complement to fulfill safety requirements, replied fire chief Dane Spence. “We don’t purposefully over-respond to calls, Spence added later. The questions, via email, Twitter, Facebook and face-to-face, followed the first full day of talks about Maple Ridge’s 2014 budget or finance plan. The session was live-streamed online. People asked about parks, museums and

transportation as council considers a budget calling for an average property tax increase of 3.75 per cent. The increase for municipal purposes is only 3.25 per cent, but with hikes to water, sewer and recycling fees, the final increase is 3.75 per cent. On an average house valued at $405,000, taxpayers will dish out another $100 in the first week of July. Gill pointed out, many cities now bill residents separately for their water. That makes it tougher for homeowners to track rising costs. Former council candidate Alex Pope asked by Twitter if Maple Ridge’s long-term transportation plan would be updated, and whether the B.C. homeowner’s grant that helps people with property taxes could be indexed to inflation. The latter should be raised at the Union of B.C. Municipalities or the Lower Mainland Local Government Association. Vicki McLeod wanted to know the projected growth of the commercial tax base and if there were any plans for a new Maple Ridge Museum. Gill said no to the latter, that there isn’t any money for a project that would have “absolutely huge costs. The price tag for a new museum would be at least $10 million. Growth in the commercial/indus-

trial tax base is predicted at just under two per cent, but it takes a lot to change the ratio of residential to industrial, he added. A question via Facebook asked about the three acres downtown on Selkirk Avenue that the district bought in 2011 for $3.7 million. The money came from several reserve accounts, and Gill agreed the district wasn’t earning investment income from that money. As well, no taxes are being paid on the property. After demolishing several old houses, the district wants to sell the land to a developer interested in building a commercial and residential complex. Council heard updates from each department, but Monday morning was more of a staff pep talk from chief administrator Jim Rule. Unlike many cities, Maple Ridge, as part of Metro Vancouver, is one of the few municipalities that will grow. “We know the population is going to virtually double, in 30 years. “The question is, what do we want to look like when it does? Rule said council must maintain a vision for the future or Maple Ridge will lose its way. “It’s important we keep the corporation strong. We don’t want to become a Detroit. We don’t want to become a BlackBerry. The 3.25-per-cent

hike in municipal spending is lower than called for by council last spring, which only wanted an increase of 3.3 per cent. While taxpayers will still pay more, the increases are half the 6.37 per cent hike imposed in 2006. As well, identical increases are planned for the following four years of the five-year plan. Rule said Maple Ridge has been transformed in the last decade, after the start of the Smart Growth on the Ground downtown plan, initiated when Coun. Al Hogarth was mayor. The plan tries to make the centre of Maple Ridge a vibrant, environmentally sustainable, compact area with social and commercial amenities. Rule said Chances Maple Ridge (gaming centre) Target and a new condo on Lougheed Highway and 223rd Street are now open, while $100 million of new construction has started in the downtown. In the next 15 years, the Fraser River waterfront, with recreation and residential, between Haney Wharf and Kanaka Creek Regional Park “will become a reality. But to attract business, the district must have the confidence to invest in itself and create the infrastructure, Rule said. “It’s very, very simple.

‘Would put Maple Ridge on map’ City from front

“Is it easier to market the city of Maple Ridge? I think it’s worthy of discussion.” Daykin said he favours making the change, providing it doesn’t cost a lot. “When you consider that half the communities in B.C. are under 10,000 people, there’s a good point to becoming a city.” But it’s one of those changes that won’t affect Maple Ridge’s rural character, he added. Jake Rudolph was chief administrator when Pitt Meadows became a city in 2007 and said the cost to change was minimal. Pitt Meadows just waited for its stationery supplies to run out before ordering new ones with city label on them. “It doesn’t change any legislation that I’m aware of.” Changing to city status was part of Pitt Meadows efforts at creating a consistent brand.

Making the change also reduced confusion some people had with the school district, he added. The transformation to a city of about 18,000 people took place with almost zero push back from residents, said Rudolph, who lives in Maple Ridge but is now deputy CAO with Abbotsford. “It was just totally embraced.” If Maple Ridge did the same, it would help its image. “I think it’s something that will project Maple Ridge in a different light. I think it puts it on the map,” Rudolph said. Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Chamber of Commerce president Terry Becker also liked the idea and assumed most of the members would, as well. Pitt Meadows still has that small-town feel despite gaining city status, she added.

Have say as city crafts 2014 budget Pitt Meadows has begun planning its budget for 2014 and residents will now have an opportunity to suggest how the city spends their taxes. The proposed operating budget currently sits at a 3.3 per cent increase in property taxes, with no increase in utilities, bringing the total impact on the average single-family home valued at $450,000 to $56. “Even with a tax increase, some cuts in other areas would still be necessary in order to meet rising costs, increasing service demands, and to comply with contractual obligations with the city’s service delivery partners, including RCMP, Parks and Leisure Services and the library,” said city finance director Mark Roberts.

the

Pitt Meadows is one of the fastest-growing municipalities in the region, with 13 per cent population growth since 2006. “So we are struggling with growing service demands while trying to ensure there is sufficient funding to replace and maintain aging infrastructure,” said Mayor Deb Walters. “Many expenditures in the proposed operating budget have been held or reduced from 2013 levels. That being said, we are still facing some difficult decisions regarding potential budget cuts, including longer response times for service requests, reduced road maintenance, elimination of public arts funding and funding for special events, to name a few.” The preliminary budget includes $445,000 in cuts.

200-plus line up for Help Portraits by Col l een Fl anagan staff reporter

Cleaning Water Mains The District of Maple Ridge Operations Department will be commencing the annual flushing/cleaning program starting at 232nd Street working east to 272nd Street between River Road and 144st Avenue, for approximately twenty (20) weeks beginning October 1, 2013. This maintenance work will improve the water quality; however, during this cleaning process some residents could experience water pressure drops and milky or dirty water. You may take the following steps to correct the problem: MILKY WATER: Open tap slightly to bleed air from the water lines. DIRTY WATER: Turn an outside tap on until the water becomes clear.

More than 200 people turned up with smiles on their faces for the third

annual Help Portrait Ridge Meadows. A line-up had formed by the time the doors of Golden Ears United Church opened Saturday afternoon.

Brenda Garcia, coorganizer of the event, was thrilled with the outcome. “We had more people than we did last year. We saw lots of people who

This year, 34,837 portraits were taken by 2,091 photographers, with the help of 497 hairstylists, 689 make-up artists and 4,537 volunteers. Founded by American celebrity photographer Jeremy Cowart in 2009, Help Portrait has since given out 282,295 portraits by 20,371 photographers, with 32,299 volunteers at 2,128 locations in 67 countries around the world. The first blast of winter brought freezing temperatures, a skiff of snow and, on Tuesday, freezing drizzle. But rain and milder temperatures should begin today, and will continue through the weekend, according to the Environment Can-

ada forecast. There were extreme cold weather warnings Saturday, Sunday and Monday as temperatures hovered around -9 and -10 C. With the wind chill on Saturday, the temperature felt like -20 C in some parts of the Fraser Valley. Winds gusted from 40 to 70 km/h on Saturday. Homeless shelters across the Lower Main-

land brought in people off the streets. It was cold enough to skate on the ice that formed on rural ponds. There have been colder days in early December. The low temperature of -10.1 on Saturday was the coldest Dec. 8 in many years, but on Dec. 6 and 7, 1980 the temperature was -15C and -16C at the Pitt Meadows weather stations. Monday morning brought trace amounts of snow and slippery road conditions. Ridge Meadows RCMP reported a few incidents of vehicles going off the road, and at about 3:30 p.m. a driver on the Langley Bypass crashed into a wooden hydro pole and sheared it off at the base. The driver was

not seriously injured in that crash, nor the other fender benders. Tuesday brought more slippery driving conditions, with a mixture of snow, rain, and freezing drizzle across the Lower Mainland. An RCMP spokesman advised commuters to leave earlier, slow down, and “apply common sense.” Today the forecast calls for a 70 per cent chance of flurries in the morning, followed by a 70 per cent chance of rain in the afternoon and evening, with a high of plus-three. Thursday and through the weekend the forecast calls for low temperatures that will remain above freezing, with highs ranging from 6 to 8 C, and periods of rain.

Magic carpet ride around the world SPECC-tacular presents Aladdin for its annual Xmas pantomime by M o ni s ha M a r tin s staff reporter

tuck in a palace and hidden from the world, the life of a princess in Peking is awfully lonely. As Princess Sushi, Narisa Vence Windover imagines she hasn’t a friend in the world. “Aside from my guards, my father and nanny, I don’t see anyone else,” laments the 16-year-old Thomas Haney secondary student, who plays the spoiled patrician in SPECC-tacular Productions annual Christmas pantomime. Anyone who dares to sneak a peek of the precious princess loses their head. So it’s no wonder Sushi falls head over heels in love with Aladdin, who defies the Emperor’s edict and flies into her bedroom. “He’s the first person to stand up against the law,” says Vence Windover. “I am amazed that someone would care enough about me to want to stand up to my father.” Vence Windover has been honing her petulant, spoiled-side to play a convincing princess who has every need catered to. Her Princess Sushi teems with sass. “It’s a borderline of a narcissistic,” she says, explaining how she asked her dad, who is a police officer, for

help to create her character based on the “sassiest” teenagers he’s dealt with. Pretending she’s in love with Aladdin hasn’t been hard, however. “What brings our characters romantically together is that fact that we are so far apart,” says Vence Windover. Aladdin and his entourage travel from China to India, Egypt and back. “I think: this is why I have to be strong, so we can finally be together.” The magical cast of characters has been rehearsing for the panto since September. Vence Windover is among several actors who are new to SPECC-tacular’s troupe this year, including Joshua Nicholas, who plays the Demon, Jenna Diersch (the Ring Genie), Kia Paquette (the Genie of the Lamp), Grace Tan (Yoo Hoo), and Trevor Gysbertsen, who has left the backstage to star as Aladdin. Gysbertsen, 21, says his Aladdin is a product of sarcasm. “Having to deal with a hugely over-the-top mother and a trouble-maker brother, he kind of has to take things with a grain of salt.” He’s the grounded character who is constantly questioning the bizarre events around him, When he finds a genie and becomes rich, he’s a tad incredulous at first. “I think Aladdin is a lot like me,” says Gysbertsen as Princess Sushi jokes that Aladdin is just a “pretty boy.” “He’s a goal-oriented person.” His mother is as a crazy as a bat, his brother is the village idiot. Alad-

din has to step up and get everyone to calm down, he adds. The cast also includes seasoned veterans: Su Wolfe, as Fairy Liquid; Ed Marshall, as the Emperor; Pauline De Silva, as Hang Lo; Mike Stusiak, as the crafty Abanaza; Brandalyn Meskas, as Police Officer Ping; and Lynsey Teasdale, as Police Officer Pong.

Backing up this wonderful cast of characters is a delivery boy played by Elliot Banbury and a host of villagers played by Tyson Aubin, Jess Piper Douglas, Kimie Takusagawa, Faith Tan, Ella Nicholas, Sally Davis and Mia Martinez. As artistic director, Marshall must coral the cast and make sure they deliver his vision of a wondrous, laugh-a-minute world. Aladdin is the 14th panto he’s directed. The key to success, he says, is finding a good script. With a script as the foundation, it’s easy to layer choreography, special effects, innuendo and slapstick jokes. “My vision was to make it as magical as possible and visually pleasing, so there is lots of colour, lots of glitter, lots of sparkle,” he says. • Aladdin opens Friday, Dec. 13 at the ACT. Jobling sisters play soldiers in the holiday staple Two Maple Ridge ballerinas will join 200 performers in Goh Ballet’s The Nutcracker, which opens in Vancouver this weekend. Elizabeth and Emily Jobling will both play toy soldiers, but also have second parts. Elizabeth, in the chorus for a second year in a row, plays a small angel, while her sister Emily will transform into a little lamb. Goh Ballet’s The Nutcracker is well known for having the largest Nutcracker cast in the city, as well as for showcasing the choreography of Emmy award-winning dance luminary Anna-Marie Holmes. More than 200 local performers will be joined onstage by the Royal Danish Ballet’s sensational Principal Dancers, Ulrik Birkkjaer and Gudrun Bojesen, who will be making their Vancouver debuts in the roles of the Sugar Plum Fairy and Cavalier Prince. As well, the production boasts an international cast, including members from Brazil, Australia and Japan. Musicians of the prestigious Vancouver Opera Orchestra will provide live musical accompaniment to Tchaikovsky’s timeless and captivating classical score. The Nutcracker tells the story of Clara, who receives a Nutcracker doll from her uncle, Dr. Drosselmeyer. Later that night, the young girl dreams that her nutcracker doll comes to life and leads an army of toy soldiers into battle against the evil Mouse King. After the Mouse King is defeated, Clara and the Nutcracker Prince journey through the beautiful Land of Snow and the Kingdom of Sweets, witnessing a world of breathtaking magic along the way. When Clara awakens, she wonders if her magical journey was all but a dream.

Marijuana referendum petition fizzles Sensible B.C. gets two-thirds by Jef f Nage l Black Press

The Sensible B.C. campaign to spark the decriminalization of marijuana in B.C. has fallen short of its goal. Pot activists got 210,000 signatures, or about twothirds of the 300,000 needed – 10 per cent of voters in all 85 B.C. ridings – for their initiative petition to potentially trigger a referendum. They had aimed for a target of 450,000 to provide a buffer against disqualified signatures. “It’s a pretty remarkable accomplishment,” said Sensible B.C. head Dana Larsen. “We’ve definitely demonstrated a high level of organization and support for this cause. Had we been operating under the rules of pretty much any other referendum system in the world, we would have qualified to be on the ballot.” He said the 4,500

Colleen Flanagan/THE NEWS

Dana Larsen and Sensible B.C. vow to try again. registered petitioners – triple the number at the start of the 90-day campaign – reached the threshold required by Elections B.C. in 19 electoral districts and got at least eight per cent in five more. Successful local campaigns happened on much of Vancouver Island, the Kootenays and other parts of the Interior. But in the vote-rich Lower Mainland that holds the most districts, marijuana advocates

came up short. They reached the 10 per cent threshold in just Vancouver-West End and Vancouver-Mount Pleasant, with no other local wins in the rest of Metro Vancouver or the Fraser Valley. They came closest in the three North Shore ridings, with eight per cent plus. Sensible B.C. aimed to compel the province to pass legislation banning police from expending any time and resources on simple marijuana possession.

Larsen said canvassers were harried in some areas by opponents and at times by calls to police as they tried to collect signatures on SkyTrain and B.C. Ferries. The outcome is nowhere near the 700,000 signatures gathered by Fight HST forces en route to their winning referendum. But Larsen argues the province must now look “very seriously” at the marijuana issue, particularly as states such as Washington and Colorado move to full pot legalization. He says history shows even failed campaigns can have impact. A prior initiative in 2002 pushing proportional representation got 98,000 signatures, but led to a citizens assembly on electoral reform and ultimately two referendum questions on the issue. Signatures were being delivered to Elections B.C. Monday and Larsen said Sensible B.C. will take a break over Christmas before deciding when to mount a new petition campaign.

Kings, who called up the 18-yearold just hours before their roster cutdown deadline. “It’s a great move for him, and we’re very happy for him,” said GM/ coach Jamie Fiset, who praised Ballarin’s hard work, determination and leadership this season. He came to the Flames as a 16-year-old in the 2010-2011 campaign, and still has two more

seasons of eligibility in the B.C. Hockey League after the present campaign. He immediately started proving to the Spruce Kings that they made a savvy acquisition, by tallying a goal and two assists in his first two games. “He hasn’t missed a beat,” noted Fiset. “Marco’s got loads of potential.” Ballarin goes to a good club, as

the Spruce Kings are in the hunt for first place in the Mainland Division. It is a positive for the Flames to be seen as a stepping stone, and a place where young hockey prospects can develop. “It makes recruiting a whole lot easier when families know you’re sending kids on,” said Fiset.

Host Ramblers place second in tournament The Maple Ridge Ramblers senior boys’ basketball squad hosted a tournament over the weekend and took second place. On Thursday, Ridge played Charles Best from Coquitlam in a barn burner. Ridge trailed 3728 at the half, fought back to trail 50-49 at three quarters, and came back to win 69-67. Leading the Ramblers was a solid fourth-quarter defence led by Isaac Halas, Jackson Murdoch with nine rebounds, and Owen Stewart with nine recoveries. Ethan Coumont with 23 points and Ravjot Rakhra with 13 points led the offence. On Friday, Lord Tweedsmuir defeated Ridge 68-56. Coumont led Ridge with 25 points and 12 recoveries. Murdoch had seven rebounds. On Saturday, the Ramblers defeated Enver Creek 69-62 to place second. Strong performances came from Coumont with 21 points, 10 assists and 11 recoveries; Rakhra with 21 points and eight rebounds and Halas with 13 points and 10 recoveries. Last season, the young Ramblers gained valuable floor time, and this year the squad is showing its potential. Much of their schedule is against 4A teams, but based on school population, the Ramblers will compete in the 3A division, against teams from Abbotsford, Langley and Maple Ridge.

At the same time, Ballarin’s departure was “a gigantic loss to our team.” Stepping into the big hole left by Ballarin is six-foot-three, 220-pound Michael Bell. A Maple Ridge player who has been with the Beaver Valley Nitehawks of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League, who was acquired for future considerations. Bell has 13 goals and 28 points in 25 games for the Fruitvale team. “He’s a big, intimidating body out there, but also a very smart hockey player,” said Fiset. “When he wants the puck, he’s gonna get it.”

“We’ve been looking for a player like Michael Bell for a while.” Fiset plugged him into Ballarin’s spot, on a line with Dale Howell and Boston Colley, and they produced a game-winning goal on Saturday.

Weekend action The Flames had a two-win weekend. Saturday beat the North Delta Devils 2-1, after outshooting them 4325. Goaltenders were the Stars of the game, as Tyler Read was first star and North Delta’s Nicholas Tenciansky second. Read lost his shutout bid with just seven seconds left. A Flames forward blocked a shot, but it deflected right back to a Devils’ player, he threw it into heavy traffic in front of Read, and it somehow pinballed into the net. Third star went to Nicholas Maydaniuk of Ridge, who scored the game’s first goal, and Bell got the game-winner in the third period. The Flames also beat Port Moody 5-0 on Friday night, and goaltender Kurt Klimek got the shutout and the game’s first star. Andrew Castagna had a goal and two assists, Jordan Gracie had a goal and an assist and goals also scored by Travis Oddy, Trevor Sutton and Jake Holland.

Colleen Flanagan/THE NEWS

Marco Ballarin (17) of the Ridge Meadows Flames collides with Mitchell Guiel of the Aldergrove Kodiaks during the 2012 playoffs. Ballarin was then an energy player, but developed a deft scoring touch that got him noticed by the BCHL’s Prince George Spruce Kings. The Flames’ climb to respectability, which features a four-game unbeaten streak, gives them a record of 9-123-2 (W-L-OTL-T).

Teddy Bear Toss This Friday night the Flames host the Grandview Steelers (12-10-

2-2) at Planet Ice, 7:30 p.m., in a game that will feature the team’s annual Teddy Bear Toss. Fans are invited to bring a stuffed toy to the game and throw it onto the ice after the first Flames goal is scored. The toys will be donated to a local children’s charity.

Ridge wrestlers medal at Fox Invitational Kodi Strobel had an impressive debut wrestling with the Maple Ridge Ramblers at the Terry Fox Invitational, winning all three matches and taking a gold medal. Joining Kodi on the highest podium were Cameron Hicks, Devin and Ciara McCrae and Payten Smith. Smith won gold in typical un-

defeated fashion, and is in her third year of wrestling without a loss. Olivia McDonnell wrestled well and won a silver medal, while Jacob Burgi, David Cameron and Greg Mckenzie all won bronze in their respective classes. Austin Sheridan and Gaerth Bourke were unlucky not

to place higher but finished fourth, while Tyler Dew-Adams (fifth) and Dionte Hurtado (sixth) rounded out the team scoring. The Ridge wrestling team dominated the Upper Fraser Valley Novice championships last week at Queen Elizabeth secondary in Surrey. The Ramblers gold medalists

included Devin McCrae, David Cameron, Harden Tupper and Daniel Jo. Dionte Hurtado won a silver medal, while Wolfie Walace, Austin Brown, Jack Dillen and Aslan Altinary each won bronze. Mathew Sillanpaa and Marko Kolobara contributed to their team scores, with fourth-place finishes.
