New tradition at Holiday Park

KEVIN PARNELL Up until about five years ago, staff at the Holiday Park Resort in Lake Country celebrated Christmas like a lot of businesses, gathering around and exchanging gifts with each other. But after many years of the gift exchange, staff at the resort thought it was time for something different and started a new tradition of giving gifts back to the community.
‘‘
WE BASICALLY TURNED OUR STAFF CHRISTMAS PARTY INTO A FUNDRAISER FOR THE COMMUNITY. Yvette Mawson
“The tradition here was for 30 years everybody brought a gift and we had an exchange,” said Yvette Mawson, Holiday Park’s resort services manager.
“But about five years ago at the end of the party there was just so much stuff lying around and we just felt there was a better way to celebrate Christmas. “We decided everyone would bring a gift for a child, food donations to the food bank or cash and we would donate to charity.” With close to 50 staff members it didn’t take long for the resort to accumulate quite a few gifts for needy kids in Lake
For the record… The Lake Country Calendar would like to clarify its story on Lake Country’s Transportation for Tomorrow Plan, as published in the Dec. 4, 2013 edition of the newspaper. The Calendar inaccurately reported that the plan will cost Lake Country $200 million over 20 years. The actual figure is $92 million over 20 years. The Calendar apologizes for the error. The district says it is looking at increasing funding from $3.1 million to $4.6 million each year in its 20-year plan. That equates to $92 million over 20 years and includes maintenance as well as renewal and improvement projects. The district also says a proposed tax hike for Lake Country residents will equal $50 per $100,000 of assessed value for homeowners in Lake Country. Budget deliberations are underway in Lake Country.

Plan for trail link between Kal, Wood lakes
▼ HOLIDAY PARK RESORT
New purpose in gift giving HOLIDAY PARK FROM A1
RICHARD ROLKE
Lake Country officials are waiting to see if they have a role in a proposed recreation corridor connecting Kalamalka and Wood lakes. Council received a presentation at its Tuesday night meeting from the Okanagan Rail Trail Initiative, which is interested in creating a trail along Kalamalka and Wood lakes if the rail line is not used for freight traffic. “It’s a great idea and it’s good to get the word out about the idea but the municipality can’t do anything about it at this point,” said Coun. Lisa Cameron. Presently, Canadian National is reviewing bids from interested parties to operate a rail service from Coldstream to Kelowna. If there is no interest from the private sector, the federal and provincial governments will be asked if they want the property. If that doesn’t occur, local government will have between March 5 and April 4 to state if there is interest in acquiring the track. “It won’t come down to the municipal level until they (CN) have exhausted all other opportunities,” said Cameron. Mayor James Baker believes the Okanagan Rail Trail Initiative’s plan may be premature. “The presentation would be best after we have some idea of what’s happening,” he said of CN’s process. Coun. Owen Dickie says that beyond a hiking/cycling trail, another long-term option could be public transit. “It would be good to see the trail bed remain as a corridor,” he said. It could possibly cost between $15 and $25 million to purchase the 50-kilometre track. “It will be difficult for any local governments to take on to buy it when it should be a federal issue,” said Baker, adding that the federal government provided the land to the railway company for free decades ago.

And it really started the ball rolling with the event growing in popularity and many of Holiday Park’s residents joining in and donating food or money to the cause. “We basically turned our staff Christmas party into a fundraiser for the community,” said Mawson. And the giving has started to be an almost year round venture for staff and residents. After an audit of the resort’s garbage found that there was a lot of food waste being thrown out, Holiday Park security staff began collecting food donations from residents, many of whom leave in the winter months and in the past had thrown

Now they can donate it to the food bank. “We thought we would just do it for a week but it’s been consistent and it’s working well so we are keeping it going,” she said. “We’ve already sent three pickup trucks full of food over to the food bank this year.” Holiday Park’s fundraising efforts go to three different community groups: the Lake
Country Food Bank, the SPCA and to the Gospel Mission in Kelowna. Staff at the resort are hoping to raise close to $3,000 in cash as well as more non-perishable food items at this year’s staff party, which has grown to include a silent auction of items donated by Lake Country businesses. “The staff love doing this, they feel so good having it all go to specific charities,” said Mawson. Cruisers crammed, cash collected for charity The Lake Country RCMP hosted their second annual Cram the Cruiser fundraiser on the weekend and are calling it a tremendous success as residents braved the cold weather to come out and support the local RCMP’s community food drive. A total of 1,928 pounds of donated items, mainly non-perishable food, as well as $2,000 in cash and cheques were donated to the Lake Country Food Bank. “We are extremely pleased with our totals this year,” said Const. Jesse O’Donaghey. “To everyone who braved the cold weather and came out to donate to the Lake Country Food Bank, thank you for helping us make a difference.” Constable
O’Donaghey began the Cram the Cruiser event after taking part in a similar food drive when he was stationed in the Lower Mainland. Last year’s inaugural event raised plenty of food and cash and this year was no different as the community came out to support local emergency personnel in their efforts to give back to the community. “The holiday season is well known to be a hard time of year on families in need, and certainly harder on the local food banks that support those families,” said O’Donaghey. “The Lake Country Food Bank alone provides assistance to 303 clients which includes over 140 families. Big White has best start ever to its resort ski season What the resort is calling its best opening in the 50-year history of Big White is continuing with the announcement that the Powder Triple Chair is open as of Thursday morning. The latest opening brings the total count of lifts in operation to 10, with a 72 runs on a 121 cm base. “I don’t know what we did, but Mother Nature is sure being nice to us,” said Michael Ballingall, Big White’s senior vice president. “Not only is this our best opening in 50 years (measured by snowfall and
attendance) but the weather has been outstanding as well. This early opening has had a tremendous economic spinoff for accommodation bookings for Christmas and New Year’s.” With early December conditions as good as they have ever been, Big White honoured original founders Cliff Serwa and Doug Mervyn on Saturday at the Big White Sweater Ball, a charity event for the Kelowna General Hospital Foundation. On the mountain, the powder triple chair is one of
the oldest lifts at Big White and first opened Dec. 8 of 1979. It runs 896 metres in length, with a top elevation of 2,150 m (7,054 ft.) and bottom elevation of 1,845m (6,053 ft.). It opens up a lot of powder to skiers from around the country. “Sunny, great snow, no lines—it’s awesome out there,” said Bill Starr from Toronto, who was on one of the first chairs this morning. Ottawa puts on gas pipeline push T he federal government stepped up its sales pitch for new pipelines to the B.C. coast last week, as it prepares for the imminent release of the federal review panel’s report on the feasibility of the Enbridge Northern Gateway project. Transport Minister Lisa Raitt and Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver arrived in Vancouver to release an expert panel’s report on the current state of tanker safety on the West Coast. It was the first of two reports that tell the Stephen Harper government in blunt terms how steep a hill it must climb to enable energy exports to Asia. Oliver gave a speech to the Vancouver Board of Trade the following morning, where he vowed to implement one of the panel’s key recommendations. Legislation is coming to ensure that polluters, not taxpayers, must pay for any environmental damage
BC Views
Tom Fletcher from resource development and transport. The panel was chaired by Gordon Houston, a former Prince Rupert harbourmaster and CEO of Port Metro Vancouver. Its report details the little-noticed fact that coastal waters around Victoria and Vancouver are already congested with shipping traffic, including Alaska oil tankers, and are at “very high risk” of an incident. Of course that “very high risk” should be seen in the B.C. context, where there has never been a serious oil spill at
sea in a century of continuous petroleum shipping. The report calls for potential polluters to show they are prepared for a “worst case” discharge like the 1989 Exxon Valdez grounding in Alaska. It tells Ottawa the Canadian Coast Guard must be properly funded to serve as incident command. Oliver recounted efforts made so far, including annual tanker inspections, increased aerial surveillance and marine markers. And he reminded his audience that Canada’s only energy export customer, the U.S., is about to surpass Saudi Arabia as the world’s largest petroleum producer. The second federal report was from Doug Eyford, a lawyer who has been meeting for months with aboriginal communities in northern B.C. and Alberta. He found, as Enbridge has reported, that many aboriginal com-
munities are working with energy producers to get the economic activity they so desperately need. (Most urban people likely don’t believe this, because the conflict-addicted media report mostly protests.) Eyford’s report is no whitewash either. It reminds Ottawa that B.C.’s unresolved aboriginal title and a general lack of trust of both the energy industry and the federal government are key obstacles to the largest economic opportunity in the world today, the rise of Asia. Eyford was dealing with the profusion of gas pipeline projects that are set to cross northern B.C., as well as the Enbridge and Kinder Morgan Canada oil proposals. The entrenched opposition is against oil, particularly heavy oil in tankers. Politics and protesters aside, these are the facts for B.C. The prosperous provinces in Canada today are Alberta,
Saskatchewan and Newfoundland, based mainly on energy development. The rest are struggling. B.C. continues to lose skilled workers to Alberta, where oil sands development continues to expand despite the continuing chorus of U.S.-financed misrepresentation of its environmental impact. It’s a key moment in Canadian history. This is where we see if we can go beyond our status as a client state of the U.S. This year’s B.C. election, where pandering to urban protest backfired on the NDP, suggests a new seriousness in the public mood. More people understand today that our comfortable modern society with free-access health care is a fragile thing. We have it better than most of the world, for now. Tom Fletcher is B.C. legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

atmosphere. Now what’s left of it is headed back towards icy outer space. Unfortunately, the comet’s remains probably won’t be visible in the northern hemisphere as they pass close by the Little Dipper and the north star, Polaris, round Christmas time. Still, the coincidence of timing is too much for me to ignore. Could the star that the Bible says hovered over Bethlehem have been a comet? With its bright head and long glowing tail, comets might seem to point at something below them. Although comets were commonly considered omens of bad luck in those days, a comet seems a more likely symbol for identifying a particular location than any conjunction of plan-

This season is about love, compassion, community, gratitude A
s the calendar turns to December, it’s hard not to notice the approach of the holiday season. Festive music is played at the grocery store and shopping centres, bright strings of lights and garlands begin popping up on our houses, and carefully-crafted lists to Santa are deposited in the mail. It’s important to remember, however, that the true spirit of the holiday season is about love, compassion, community, and gratitude. It’s about spending time with our

They are always looking for volunteers, and taking some time as a family to do charitable work is a great way to give back to the community and spend time enjoying the true spirit of the holidays. on your list while supporting our community, small business and the local economy. We have so many choices when we shop, especially at this time of year, and making the decision to purchase your holiday gifts and groceries from local vendors is a great way to make a positive impact. Kelowna’s recent revitalization of downtown and Bernard Avenue has made it a beautiful place to do your holiday shopping and appreciate the beauty of our city. The city has made a
$14 million investment, widening sidewalks and making significant aesthetic improvements to the area that many of our independent small businesses call home. We all look forward to sharing hearty meals with friends and family over the holidays, and B.C. food products, agriculture, and wine make for a delicious and locally-sourced meal. We have year-round greenhouse vegetables available from throughout the province, including the Okanagan. When you serve
B.C. agriculture products to your family and guests, you’re supporting our provincial farmers and our economy. Not everyone is fortunate enough to be able to afford a holiday meal for their family, and this is a busy time of year for local food banks. You can make a difference by donating to the Kelowna Community Food Bank, at 1265 Ellis St., or at most grocery stores in Kelowna.
Tourists come from all over the world to visit our wineries, and we are fortunate enough to have great wines right here in our backyard. Actual date of Jesus’ birth is not the point TAYLOR FROM A4 ets or a flaring supernova. Indeed, Chinese and Korean astronomers did record a comet, around 5 BC, that apparently hung in the skies for 70 nights. And when astronomers work the cycle of Halley’s comet backwards, they conclude that it would have passed earth in 12 BC. Granted, neither of those happened in the year zero. They couldn’t, because the Roman counting system didn’t
have a zero. So the calendar switched over directly from 1 BC to 1 AD. Well, no, actually, it didn’t. The Roman Empire kept right on counting years the way it always had. No one paid attention to a baby’s birth in a small village in a troublesome corner of the empire for some time. It wasn’t until some 525 years later that a monk named Dionysius Exiguus applied the same process as Halley’s astronomers—he worked backwards, using
known historic records, to identify the year that Jesus was born. Unfortunately, he got it wrong. That’s because Roman numerals made calculations very difficult. Just try multiplying MMXIII by XXXLXV, minus XXI, without converting Roman numerals into Arabic notation. (If you must know, that’s the number of days since Jesus’ birth, not counting leap years, which Julius Caesar also miscalculated around 40 years before Jesus.)
Also because Exiguus didn’t have zero to work with. Zero didn’t show up in European mathematics until about 75 years after Exiguus died. But even more, because Exiguus didn’t set out to define the date of Jesus’ birth. He merely wanted to establish a consistent date when all Catholic churches would celebrate Easter. Splitting AD from BC was a by-product of religious liturgy. So the actual year when Christmas happened is somewhat un-
certain. Does it matter? I don’t think so. A faith that requires Jesus to be born on exactly December 25, in the year 1 AD, will be fragile, easily shattered by contrary evidence. His reality doesn’t depend on a date-stamped birth certificate. Or on DNA profiles. It depends on the effect he has had, and continues to have, on us humans. The person matters, not the date or the star. Author Jim Taylor lives in Lake Country. rewrite@shaw.ca

Infrastructure ,transportation to have significant impact on 2014 budget deliberation RICHARD ROLKE The balancing act between taxes and meeting public demands is underway in Lake Country. There have already been some discussions about the 2014 budget and further meetings are scheduled. “We still have lots to do and not enough money,” said Mayor
James Baker. “There are services that need to be delivered. We have to work on the infrastructure deficit.” At this point, there is no sense of a potential tax increase. “We haven’t got that far yet,” said Coun. Lisa Cameron. The budget process comes at the same time that the district is establishing a long-term transportation plan.

responsibilities from federal and provincial governments on to municipalities. “Someone has to look after the social aspect (of the community),” said Baker. Cameron is pleased to see budget talks begin. “We want to start getting numbers earlier because this council was having to cram meetings into February to get the budget done in time,” she said.

Rockets’ whiskers add up in Movember CHL teams, including the Kelowna Rockets, raised more than $157,000 in support of Movember—men’s health awareness month. In all, 39 teams with 663 registered members helped change the face of men’s health, raising funds and awareness to combat prostate and testicular cancer. “Congratulations to all Movember participants for their energy and commitment helping the Canadian Hockey League collectively raise more than $157,000 this season and over $460,000 in three seasons for such a worthy cause,” said CHL president David Branch. “It’s been incredible to see the growth of this program and the outstanding support our players, officials and teams receive from friends, family, sponsors and fans across the CHL.” For the third straight year the ‘MOfficials’

The group of 150 Western Hockey League officials, led by Clayton Hall who raised $4,530, are ranked sixth among all registered teams in Canada after finishing 12th last season and 33rd as a group in 2011. The WHL’s Prince Albert Raiders led all CHL clubs in fundraising with $16,853 raised, followed by the QMJHL’s Saint John Sea Dogs who raised $10,526. The Sudbury Wolves led all OHL clubs and are ninth on the CHL Network Leaderboard with $2,915 raised. Sea Dogs’ defenceman Michael Abbott, 19, from St. John’s, NL, leads the entire CHL Network with $5,705 raised. More than $29 million has been raised by participants across Canada and $105 million raised worldwide.

they brought home medals from the Okanagan Inter-club Figure Skating Competition held Nov. 29, 30 and Dec. 1. Great curling to decide Canada’s Olympic teams By the time you read this column, the Canadian Olympic contenders will have been decided [ Jennifer Jones and Brad Jacobs], and for us viewers at home it was pretty exciting to watch all the greats perform. Both Glen Howard and Jeff Stoughton were eliminated early in the competition, as well as McKewen and Koe. The game I really enjoyed watching was Martin and Morris with Martin winning the match in the 11th end and last rock. Jacobs, meanwhile, went undefeated in the round robin and got the

bye into the final. This young team from Sault Ste. Marie were flawless in their strategy and execution of their shots—simply amazing to watch. On the women’s side, team Jones, with a record of 6-1, placed first in the round robin and a bye to the final. All the women’s teams had more finesse shots, while the men had angle double, triple and even quadruple takeouts for scoring. It was hard to watch all the games that were televised—thank goodness for PVR. As we are nearing Christmas and the half way mark to our season here at the Winfield Curling Club, we have only one team that hasn’t been defeated all year. The Tuesday night ladies league has the Picco rink way ahead of the rest with zero losses— well done ladies. In the men’s leagues, the Tetlock team is in first place on Mon-
day night and tied with the Laface foursome on Thursday night with only one loss each. Friday night open is going strong with a lot of new curlers who are catching on quickly to the sport of curling. This is a great night to mix it up on the ice and have some giggles. There are still three sheets open at 8:30 p.m. for drop-in curling, so come on down and bring your friends—it’s a perfectly social evening with a little bit of exercise. The club is also holding its annual Christmas funspiel on Dec. 14 and all members and their family and friends are welcome to come down and have some fun. And don’t forget your raffle tickets for the TV—only one week left to get them all sold. In the meantime, stay warm and good curling to all. longer lasting. Over time the pores that allow water to enter the stem of a cut tree get clogged with sap and, as with cut flowers, we always make a fresh cut as we put them in the arrangement to remove or open up some of the clogged pores and allow water in. Fresh Christmas trees need only a few inches cut off when mounting. However, if your tree is suspected of being cut several weeks or even months previous you should remove between four and 12 inches off the butt when mounting it in your home. If you had new cut flowers, you would store them in a refrigerator to keep them from degrading and once brought up to room temperature you only have so much time before they wilt and die. So keeping your tree cool until you’re ready to set it up is important. If a cut flower stem is allowed to dry out it very quickly dies, so keeping your tree reservoir full is critical. Unlike cut flowers, Christmas trees need hot water, especially when first set up—the hotter the better. This helps to open up the pores and get them drinking. With cut flowers we always say water every day to keep them fresh!

A Quick review on how to keep your tree healthy: • Keep the tree cool until ready to set up • Make a fresh cut of at least two inches at set up • Use very hot water for each watering • A drop of bleach keeps bacteria out • Keep the reservoir full at all times • Remember that if your tree is frozen, let the stem thaw in a bucket of hot water in a cool location before bringing into a warm room.

don’t add anything to the water that may clog up these openings like heavy syrups or sugar. Just water is best. Think of your Christmas tree as a fresh cut flower and apply the same strategies to keeping it fresh and you will get the best possible result for the holiday season.

Keep the vase full! This is much more difficult with a Christmas tree because it uses a lot of water, particularly in the first week. I find that a seven-ft tree will use about one to two litres per day for the first five days. If you can keep up with this it makes a big difference in the longevity of the tree. A few drops of household bleach in the reservoir will help keep the bacteria from growing in the stump and help keep the pores open. Don’t add too much because it has a strong odour, and

Dr. Lina Jung and Dr. Greg Kosar
Q A
What hazards to my pet should I watch out for during the winter months?
With winter and the holiday season approaching, there are a few things we should keep in mind to ensure our pets stay healthy. Every year many pets suffer from ethylene glycol or antifreeze poisoning. Products containing antifreeze are very attractive to dogs and cats due to their sweet taste. Early signs, which may be seen within 30 minutes of toxin ingestion, include depression, vomiting, incoordination, excessive urination, excessive thirst, and muscle twitching. If ingested and not treated within hours, this toxic substance destroys the kidneys and will rapidly lead to death. Be very careful when using or storing products containing antifreeze and clean up any spilled portions. Over the holidays there may be an abundance of chocolate about the house and yes it is toxic to dogs! Dark chocolate is the most dangerous as it contains the highest concentration of theobromine. Clinical signs can include vomiting and diarrhea, increased thirst, panting or restlessness, excessive urination, a racing heart rate, muscle spasms (tremors), and occasionally seizures. Death is possible when animals that ingest large quantities of high quality dark chocolate are not treated appropriately. If your pet is displaying any of the above mentioned signs or you know they have ingested antifreeze or chocolate, seek veterinary attention immediately!

Dentists
Everytime I go to the dentist for my exam and hygiene, they’re always recommending fluoride treatment. Can you tell me more about it?
Wow, that topic has over 60 years of evidence-based scientific research backing it up. In fact, the World Health Organization has stated that fluoride is one of the Top 10 Public Health Achievements of the 20th Century. It is one of the best preventive measures you can take for the betterment of your oral health. Since I could talk endlessly about the benefits of fluoride treatment, I will try to give bite-size pieces of information over the next few installments. Part 2 Q: Why is fluoride added to the public drinking water if it is available in other ways? A: Fluoride is added to public drinking water to protect all members of the community from tooth decay. Community water fluoridation is a safe and effective way of preventing tooth decay at a low cost. Q: Who watches the fluoride levels in the drinking water? A: The Federal-Provincial-Territorial Committee on Drinking Water makes recommendations about the optimal level of fluoride in public drinking water to prevent tooth decay. The recommended level takes into account that Canadians receive fluoride from other sources such as food and beverages.

What is the projected outlook for the real estate market moving into 2014?
There are many reasons to feel optimistic about the 2014 Real Estate market. In addition to the optimism in financial markets, we have had consistent real estate sales through to the last quarter of 2013 which is a solid market indicator of stabilization moving forward. Geographically, Lake Country is fortunate to be located in close proximity to significant recent major infrastructure enhancements. Improvements to the Kelowna Airport, the University of British Columbia Okanagan Campus and the new section of Highway 97 between Winfield and Oyama all mean that millions of dollars are being spent in our community and will all have a positive impact on our local real estate market. These improvements will generate business opportunities, full-time employment and will also enhance the thriving tourism industry in our Central Okanagan region. The increase in consumer confidence that will come from these, and other major projects, will continue to give buoyancy to the local market and will result in a healthy 2014 for real estate!

What defines a minimalist shoe and does it facilitate a more ‘natural’ way of running?
As with any other category of footwear, there is no strict criteria to define a minimalist shoe. Generally, they have less of everything - less weight, less cushioning and less structure than conventional running shoes. To answer if they are more functional, it is important to distinguish the marketing from the science. Like other marketing campaigns the impression was made that these shoes are new and revolutionary. On the contrary, it has long been known that humans move differently while shod versus barefoot. A history of minimalist commercial failures in the 1990’s also diminish the revolutionary claim. Manufacturers will often conflate research on barefoot running to make the case for their minimalist shoes, when the two are obviously not the same. Runners wearing conventional foot wear - including minimalist shoes - will usually strike the ground with their heel, while barefoot runners usually do not. Given this, it questions the benefit of wearing a shoe with less cushion and less support. Still, they may create favourable gait changes for some while increasing the risk for new injuries in others. The impact forces of running do not disappear but are redistributed based on the foot wear you choose.

Optometrist
Q A
Is there anything I can do when my eyelid twitches?
It certainly is not uncommon for people to experience
bothersome bouts of minute tremors in one or both of their eyelids – this is termed a blepharospasm. As there are more fast-twitch muscle fibres in the eyelids than anywhere else in the body, these tremors are most commonly signs of minor physiological imbalances within the body. The most common causes are fatigue, eye-strain (from prolonged near tasks), excess caffeine, stress or a mild electrolyte imbalance. All of these conditions can cause the fast twitch muscles in the eyelid to fire erratically and cause a bothersome twitch. To alleviate the issue, one must address the common causes listed above by taking breaks from concentrated tasks, maintaining proper hydration and ensuring restful sleep when possible. If these issues are addressed and the twitch persists, it is always prudent to seek further evaluation with your Doctor of Optometry.

ROBERTS DOREEN
Nov 27, 1930 - Dec 5, 2013 Annie, Granny, Oyama Gramma, Gramma Bo or Grams. With many names, Doreen Roberts was known best for her big heart. On December 5, 2013, Doreen left this world and was met by her late children Darrell and Lisa Roberts. She is survived by her sons Guy (Shannon) of Sorrento, Bryan (Clara) of Bowden, Todd (Wanda) of Oyama and her grandchildren Ryan, Devon, Tiffany, Avalon, Meagan, Lauren and Lucas, her brother Gerry Campbell, sister Terry Threadkell (Grant, Jessica, Kieth). Doreen always had an open door and a warm plate for all of her friends and anyone with time to sit and enjoy her patio with her. Doreen very much enjoyed her line & square dancing and all the good friends she met along the way. She will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her. A Celebration of life was held at Gramma’s home Saturday December 7, 2013 Do not stand at my grave and weep. I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond’s glint on snow. I am the sunlight on rippled grain. I am the gentle autumn’s rain. When you awaken in the morning hush, I am the swift upliftiing rush, Of birds in quiet circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand by my grave and cry I am not there, I did not die.
