Slomp named as top man for Canada’s National Farmer’s Union By Treena Mielke A Rimbey area dairy farmer has been named to the Canada’s National Farmers Union’s top post. Jan Slomp was acclaimed as the new president of the NFU during its four-day annual convention ending Nov. 30 in Ottawa. Slomp, previously the Alberta regional co-ordinator on the NFU’s board, replaces grain grower Terry Boehm of Allan, Sask. as president. Slomp, who operates Rimrose Dairy, located northwest of Rimbey, with his wife Marian is pleased and excited about his new position. “It’s quite an honour and a trust of the membership,” he said.
Slomp sees the role of the NFU as one that is becoming increasingly crucial due to what he believes is the federal government’s blatant disregard for democracy, he said. “The government tends to listen only to big business and commodity groups embedded with that business. The Harper government weakened environmental protection and lacks vision for family farmers,” Slomp stressed the NFU is not only concerned with protecting the family farm, it speaks in favour of clear public policy that incorporates the health and well being of all Canadians. “Our policies are deeply rooted in public interest,” he said. “We speak for all members across the country and take a balanced approach to policies and issues that
affect everyone.” In the last two or three decades, the government has enforced deregulation of many policies, tipping the scales of power in favour of corporations directed from abroad, he said. “We need better policies for food and farmers and we need to be the voice for those running family farms,” he said. Slomp was pleased to note there were a sizable number of young farmers attending the NFU conference in Ottawa. “It was exciting. There was a strong contingent of well-educated young farmers who are carrying the torch forward. They have a tremendous influence.” The National Farmers Union is a directmembership organization made up of Canadian farm families who share common
goals. Every member of the farm family, including children ages 14 to 21, are voting members. The goal of the NFU is to promote the family farm and to work together to achieve agricultural policies that uphold the dignity and security of income for farm families and protect the farm for future generations. The NFU also has associate members who help family farmers build a sustainable and nutritious food system in Canada. The mandate of the National Farmers Union is to promote the betterment of farmers in the attainment of their economic and social goals. Ann Slater of St. Marys, Ont. was named as first vice-president (policy), replacing Colleen Ross of Nelson, B.C.

Ponoka County agrees to support two ag centre loans By Amelia Naismith
the same reason we advanced $1.4 million over here and are guaranteeing $1.8 million for them (Ponoka Ag Event Centre Society),” said Cutforth. Weir was also concerned the county would be the one having to step up and cover the bill if the Rimbey Agricultural Society didn’t have an effective debt service process in place. “What I’m really concerned about is we’re going to get hung with this.” “The intent is that obviously they’re going to pay out of the operational revenue, any finance charges. And it’s certainly expected that the county won’t pay five cents, that’s the intent,” explained Cutforth. “On the other hand, ultimately, if that
doesn’t happen and the onus is on the county, then obviously the funding for the county would come out of general revenue,” he added. Reeve McLauchlin pointed out the county took the same risk with the Calnash Ag Event Centre. “Every question you’re asking is the same conversation we had on this facility as well. Ponoka County council is throwing its support behind two guaranteed loans despite apprehensions expressed by one councillor. Both Cutforth and Reeve Paul McLauchlin stepped in to assure Weir of the Rimbey Agricultural society’s validity and competence. McLauchlin feels the only concern facing this loan is the difficulties Rimbey’s ag society could face when it comes to provincial grants. “That ag society has been active and has run a smaller facility, but they’ve done it for generations so they do have some experience and background. Whereas, frankly, none of us had a clue when we started this one,” said Cutforth. “And we do know those people and I know that community,” McLauchlin added. There is a lot of good to be said about snow. At the moment, however, the only good thing I can think of is it looks nice on a Christmas card, especially if one was to receive the card while sitting on Treena Mielke a sandy beach someOn The Other Side where sipping something cold and delicious through a straw. They say no two snowflakes are alike. I say, ‘who cares?’ I mean really who has time to check out the shape or size of a snowflake. And who in their right mind would say, “oh, look there’s another pretty little snowflake coming down? How wonderful! Maybe I can catch it on my tongue or let it fall gently on my mittened hand and gaze in wonder at its beauty. I, personally, have given up on trying to find any beauty in snow, falling or otherwise. I have decided, instead, to focus on the beauty of my snow shovel. My snow shovel and I have spent a lot of time together lately. In fact, it would be correct to say we are close, joined at the hip, so to speak. Together we have attacked all kinds of snow; fluffy snow, hard snow, icy snow and massive snowdrifts. And, in the end, we usually, though not always, triumph. In fact, even though I did most of the work, (alas, my shovel is not magic), we cleared a path from my front door, down the sidewalk, and found my driveway where the roof of my vehicle was clearly visible. Eureka! And so it came to be that my snow shovel and I unearthed the vehicle, which had remained intact under the snowdrift. And after much coaxing and prodding and pleading on my part, the car
groaned, turned over and actually started. It was a miracle. The miracle ended, however, at that point, because when I attempted to drive out of my driveway and’ gun’ the motor (I heard some guys who were dressed in grease stained overalls and looking under my car’s hood use that term), the car became immediately and soundly stuck. I tried to ‘rock’ it like guys who drive a lot say to do when in that situation, but it would not be rocked, and, instead I found the wheels spun deeper into the icing sugar snow. As can be expected, once again, I called on my trusty shovel and together we proceeded to get my car ‘unstuck.’ And so I shoveled. Still stuck. I shoveled some more. Still stuck. At this point, I resorted to womanly wiles and let a few tears run in frozen rivulets down my cheeks. Still stuck. Finally, I noticed a guy down the street who was also stuck. He wasn’t crying, only shoveling, but it seemed, to no avail. And so I trudged down
the street, and offered to help push, because that’s what neighbors are supposed to do in this weather. Help push! And so I pushed and his wife pushed and before we knew it he, or at least his vehicle, was unstuck. And then they came down the street and pushed me out and we got all friendly and chatty and took our frozen mitts off and shook hands. And we agreed that we all knew what snowploughs were, but we had almost forgotten what they looked like, because they had not graced our subdivision that winter. And then we went our separate ways, happily done complaining, and turned on our car radios and listened to the cheerful announcer say, “more snow expected.” And I said “whatever, it’s okay. I have a snow shovel but I also have neighbours who will lend a helping hand, if needed. And I will get by. A little dose of kindness beats a snow shovel any day!
Less politics, more action needed on child care deaths Recently, media reports exposed a disturbing and heartbreaking story. Documents show, since 1999, the Alberta government failed to report 89 deaths of children in provincial care and then barred parents from speaking publicly about them. Since this issue was first made public, Wildrose has been steadfast: Alberta needs a full, public inquiry to find out why children are tragically perishing in provincial care and to determine how future deaths can be prevented. This issue is uncomfortable. It’s dark. It’s sensitive. Thus, opposition MLAs from all parties have joined forces in the spirit of non-partisanship to request the PC government launch a full, public inquiry into the deaths of children in care. “Let me be clear,” Wildrose Leader Danielle Smith said in an emotional plea to the legislature Monday. “This is not a partisan issue.” Indeed, this is not a partisan issue. This is an issue of who we are as people – of honesty, of accountability, of basic human values. If children are dying in provincial care, we must know why. A full public inquiry, and nothing less, is how
we get to the bottom of this issue. Albertans have questions – and this will provide answers. U n f o r t u n a t e l y, however, calls for an inquiry have been met with insensitivity and inaction from the PC Joe Anglin government. At first, MLA Human Services Minister Dave Hancock tried to say the number of unreported deaths in the system was “not significant.” Officials in the Premier’s Office called public outrage over the deaths “dribble.” Their latest tactic has been to attack the media outlets that broke the story. All the while, they’ve refused to call a public inquiry. They’ve instead announced they will hold a roundtable discussion on the matter, a positive step to be sure. But only a public inquiry with a broad mandate and judicial oversight can get to
the bottom of it. This is the problem: A government in power for too long loses touch with real-world problems. Most would agree a one-day roundtable discussion down won’t solve this problem. But after 43 years in power, the PC government believes it is the answer, causing ongoing frustration and disappointment for those seeking real solutions. Wildrose fears the PC government is putting its own interests in front of the interests of children in care. The fact is the government fought the release of this story in for four years. The truth finally came out, and now, Albertans have more questions than answers. To be clear, this issue is neither about politics nor is it about partisanship – It’s about doing the right thing. It’s time for the PC government do the right thing, put aside their personal hesitations and call for a full public inquiry into child care deaths immediately. What do you think? area. It is becoming more well known and it is in a good location,” she said in an earlier interview. In an earlier information session, Tona stressed councillors need to remember they are a team and have to follow the rules set out in the municipal government act. She said the word transparent is often overused, adding councillors need to explain to their constituents they will be as honest as possible and divulge as much information as legally possible, but land, legal and personnel issues need to be discussed in-camera (behind closed doors). Constituents may not always understand council’s actions and councillors need to be willing to explain their position as best they can, she said.
Rimbey town council and staff spent an informative day last Saturday learning how to best do their part to serve the community in which they have been elected to serve. Council met with Transitional solutions Inc. senior executive Donna Tona and CAO Kevin Robins in an all day workshop held at the council chambers. Mayor Rick Pankiw said the session was an excellent opportunity to learn about the basic rules of municipal politics. “We learned a lot of basics like what happens in the event of a tie and how to address each other in council. “I would just like to be addressed as Rick, but apparently it is supposed to be Mr. Mayor or Your Worship. It can’t just be Rick.” Pankiw said he NEED A learned that he is required to vote at all times and not just vote to break Check status of Government a tie. The total number of Keep Michener Open petition signatures tabled now stands at an incredible 24,244. Most signatures have come from the Red Deer community. The petition has been circulating since April. Recently, the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees released a short documentary, “Evicting Our Most Vulnerable,” which highlights the need for Michener Centre to remain in the community. The film has been viewed more than 2,100 times in just two days. In March, the Redford government abruptly announced it would close the home for 125 developmentally disabled adults and seniors, breaking a promise to residents and families that Michener would stay open. That promise was made in 2008 by the Progressive Conservative government. The promise states in writing that individuals currently living in Michener would never be forced out. The closure of Michener Centre, which has won eight Premier’s awards of excellence for the services it provides, was made without consultation of residents, families, guardians or staff. Rimbey Spartans Football team wins Provincials By Bill Bramfield The Rimbey Spartans High School Football team captured the 2013 Provincial Championship with a 55-52 win over Millwoods Christian. The boys completed a perfect 9-0 season with a thrilling victory in the Alberta Bowl on Nov. 23 in Calgary. The game was close, but the Spartans never trailed. Â The nail in the coffin was a punt through the end zone with only minutes remaining to give the Spartans a nine point lead which all but sealed the victory. Millwoods made a late push by scoring a touchdown on the last play of the game but it was not enough and the Spartans won the title. It is the second championship for the team who won the Ruby Cup in 2009. It is, however, the first banner recognized by the Alberta Schools Athletic Association as a provincial championship. Six-man football, which has growing popularity in the province has, received official ASAA status this year.

By Treena Mielke The amount of snow in Central Alberta has continued to fall relentlessly, forcing municipal road crews to step up their manpower and equipment in an attempt to keep roads cleared. In Rimbey two local contractors have been hired to assist public works with snow removal. Mayor Rick Pankiw said keeping roads cleared in a priority. “We want people to shop locally, we need to make businesses ac-

cessible.” Pankiw urged residents on 56 St. and 57 St. to refrain from parking on the street until the snow plough has been through. “They are running out of room and the space is shrinking for them to get through. The last thing we want to do is to start towing vehicles.” Public works foreman Rick Schmidt said keeping up with the snowfall means working more than 12 hours many days. “This is the worst I’ve ever seen and I’ve been here 12 years.” He asked for the public’s patience, adding the town is doing its best to keep the roads cleared. Melissa Beebe, the town’s assistant CAO said snow removal has pushed the budget allotted for roads over
by about $10,000, already. Approximately $142,000 was earmarked for roads including salaries and so far, $152,000 has been spent. “We didn’t budget for this at all,’ she said. “It is always based on the year before and there is no guarantees.” She said the public needs to be patient and understand crews are doing the best they can. “The main concern is to open the roadways. As a community we all have to work together. We only have so much equipment and we are doing the best we can with what we have.” A spokesperson from the Bentley town office said road crews are working diligently to keep the streets cleared, but no extra staff or equipment has been hired.

Bullying. That’s not the Alberta way. 13122SA0 Premier Alison Redford
Stop Bill 46 In 1977, Premier Peter Lougheed promised that in all future contract negotiations, provincial employees would have the right to binding arbitration in lieu of the right to strike. Now, Premier Alison Redford has rammed through Bill 46, which goes back on that promise and takes the right to arbitration away from 22,000 front-line government employees. Redford’s Bill 46 gives government the power to freeze wages, with no independent arbitrator determining what is fair and justified. That’s not negotiating, that’s bullying. And bullying is not the Alberta way. The Alberta way has always been to keep your promises and respect the rights of others.

NACHTEGAELE May 24, 1927 ~ December 2, 2013 Victor ‘Vic’ Cornelius Nachtegaele of Buck Lake, Alberta passed away at the Drayton Valley Hospital and Care Centre on Monday, December 2, 2013 at the age of 86 years. Vic was born and raised in the farming community of North Battleford, Saskatchewan. On April 20, 1949 he was united in marriage to Charlesena Bulbeck, and they would have celebrated 65 years of marriage this April. Vic and Charlie farmed at North Battleford for several years and then moved the family to a ranch west of Bluffton in 1964. After their three children left home, Vic attended NAIT in Edmonton to obtain his heavy-duty mechanic certification. Vic and Charlie then decided to raise three foster boys: Erwin, Malcolm and Trevor at the ages of six, four, and two years. A few years later an opportunity arose to work in Africa for CEDA with his heavy-duty mechanic and grain farming background, and in 1978 Vic, Charlie and the boys spent three years in Tanzania and two years in Sudan. For their holidays they had several different places to visit in that part of the world! In 1999, Vic and Charlie retired to Buck Lake and sold the ranch in Bluffton shortly after. This is a very short version of Vic’s life. He enjoyed participating in many sports, and loved community life, dances, traveling, and cards. When he retired, Vic took great pleasure in ice fishing, card parties, camping and the coffee pack, and going for breakfast at the restaurant. He will be remembered for his terrific sense of humour, helping others when needed, and he always knew how to fix something, whether big or small. And, oh my, we can’t forget Vic’s sweet tooth! Excursions out to the ponderosa for a good visit and Mary’s lemon pie, Reta MacLean dropping in with her cakes, cinnamon loafs and jams, and various other people with cookies, muffins and pies. “Vic will be greatly missed ... leaving behind many lasting and treasured memories.” Vic will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his beloved wife, Charlesena ‘Charlie’; his daughter, Peggy Mueller; his son, Larry (Sharon); and his youngest daughter, Sheila (Rob) Budd; as well as his foster sons, Malcolm and Trevor Peigan. He will also be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his sister, Renilda Kemp; sister-in-law, Irene Nachtegaele; brother, Richard (Albertine) Nachtegaele; sisters-in-law, Shirley Kulyk and Vida (Nester) Brunwald; in addition to seven grandchildren; several great grandchildren; many cousins, nieces, and nephews; and numerous cherished friends. Vic was predeceased by his parents, Suzanne and Cornelius; his parents-in-law, Charles and Mae Bulbeck; his foster son, Erwin Peigan; his son-in-law, Norman Mueller; brother, Gus Nachtegaele; and brother-in-law, Steve Kulyk. A Public Graveside Service in Celebration of Vic’s Life was held at the Iola Fairview Cemetery, Bluffton on Friday, December 6, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Kevin Rowland officiating. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Vic’s Memory may be made directly to Winfield Community Health Services, Box 114, Winfield, Alberta T0C 2X0. Ralph was born to Henry and Inga Brown at Amulet, Sask. on November 2, 1924. Henry passed away two years after Ralphs’ birth. Ralph attended school in Sask. and joined the armed forces in 1943. He served his country in Italy. After returning home from the war, he worked at a saw mill at Chip lake and then worked for Shelley Saw Mills by the Fraser river in B.C. On May 16, 1951, Ralph married the love of his life, Ellen Olson, from the Meadowbrook district. She would become his lifelong faithful companion and best friend for the next 57 years. After working with his brother in law, Ralph Olson, on his water well drilling rig, and working as a sawyer on a mill near Nordegg for three winters, he pursued full time farming. By then he had purchased the first of four quarters of land in the Forshee district. He and Ellen worked as a “team” and much was accomplished, including raising three children. Ralph was never scared to roll up his sleeves and help out in the kitchen. He was known for his homemade smoked sausage, usually made from wild game. He was an avid hunter, and enjoyed friends and family that would join him out west at “Ralphs’ ridge”, rightly named after him. He had many memories and stories about hunting. He will be remembered for his love of the outdoors, sausage making, for his ready laugh and as a loving and caring man. Ralph always enjoyed a challenge, and was a strong, hardworking man, who enjoyed his family and friends along with exceptional health, until recently. Ralph will be lovingly remembered and missed by two sons, Wendell (Wendy) of Camrose, and Tim (Brenda) of Sylvan Lake, one daughter Vicky (Brian) Hawkings of Forshee, eleven grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren, two sister in laws, Gene Olson and Marie Olson, and many treasured nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Predeceased by his father Henry and his mother Inga, brothers Orville, Arthur (Christina), sisters Remoth (Ted) Leeder, Ruth (Reg) Webb, Gladys (Archie) Campbell, Muriel (Paul) Wedlund, Joyce (Harvey) Riley, and brothers and sisters in law Gayhart (Maryanne) Olson, Richard Olson, Lillian (Louis) Hatala, Agnes (Joe) Hatala, Ralph Olson, Mildred (Bud) Lehman, and nephews Larry Olson, Brian Olson, Trevor Wedlund and niece Jennifer Hatala. A celebration of Ralphs’ life will be held Saturday December 7 at 1:00 at the Lincoln Hall. If friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to Rimbey Hospital and Care Center, Northcott Care Center or Canadian National Institute for the Blind. Expressions of sympathy can be made by visiting www.wilsonsfuneralchapel.ca. WILSON’S FUNERAL CHAPEL & CREMATORIUM, of Lacombe and Rimbey in charge of the arrangements. 403-782-3366 403-843-3388 “A Caring Family, Caring For Families”

Neil White, Winfield AB Our heartfelt thanks are extended to everyone who has helped and supported us following the loss of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Neil White. Over the past few weeks our family has received countless expressions of sympathy including prayers, cards, food, flowers, phone calls and assistance at our farm; each of these is greatly appreciated. Thank you to everyone who was involved in planning and taking part in the memorial service celebrating Neil’s life. To each person who attended the service, your presence meant a great deal to us. We are also grateful to the many people whose paths crossed with Neil in one capacity or another, and have contacted us to share their memories and impressions of him. To our extended family, neighbours, church families, friends and colleagues: your kindness and compassion have provided comfort and encouragement as we grieve the loss of Neil. With appreciation from the White family: Barbara; Skylar and Karen; Ailen; Jordan and Caitlin; Kelsey; and grandchildren
