Community kitchen nearly done

Alan Caldwell at the soft opening of the Cloverdale Community Kitchen at Pacific Community Church.
By Jennifer Lang Construction on a community kitchen at Pacific Community Church is substantially complete, bringing Cloverdale’s newest community outreach project a big step closer to its target. And what better way to celebrate the near completion of the Cloverdale Community Kitchen than with a slice of cake? “May God bless Cloverdale community kitchen,” it read, in icing. The congregation held a soft opening on Dec. 1 but the official opening won’t take place until February, coinciding with the Coldest Night of the Year Campaign in support of the homeless, Alan Cadwell, director of facilities development for Pacific Community Church, announced in a newsletter to supporters last week.

They’re not yet serving hot meals out of the new kitchen because there are still some finishing touches to do, including securing approvals and permits from the City of Surrey, Fraser Health and the Surrey Fire Services, Cadwell said. The church, located at 5337 180 Street, began raising money for the project a year ago, when the congregation approved a plan to build a commercial kitchen for the church and other concerned community groups. More than $400,000 was raised, along with donations of in-kind goods, which included a sizable donation of kitchen equipment. The new kitchen includes a professional dish washing system, commercial oven, restaurant-grade stove and grill, a steamer

and a 70-litre soup still. There’s also a spacious walk-in cooler and a pantry. “Today, we put our first pot of coffee on and ran the dishwasher,” pastor Jim Heuving told Cloverdale Chamber of Commerce members Tuesday. “It’s operational.” Renovations were necessary to create a kitchen that could be used by multiple people and groups wanting to address community needs. Construction forced the three weekly soup kitchen initiatives based out of Pacific Community Church to halt operations, but those programs are expected to resume shortly. But the longer term goal is to expand programming in order to reach out to more people in need, such as the growing number of seniors and working poor in Cloverdale, Cadwell said.

Catchy slogan, dubious proposal What started as a ‘Rails to Trails’ campaign is truly about the increase of the transfer of coal To the editor; Re: “Rail Options Presented,” Dec. 5 Recently Fraser Surrey Docks submitted on application to Port Metro Vancouver for the development of a Direct Transfer Coal Facility at the existing terminal located immediately east of the North Delta/Surrey border to handle up to 4 million metric tonnes of coal per year. (A 30-day public comment period on the Environment Impact Assessment ends Dec. 17, 2013.) It is proposed that the coal be transferred by Burlington Northern Sante-Fe (BNSF) rail to the terminal and will be loaded directly onto barges at the existing berth. It will then go off to Texada Island where the coal will be transferred to a deep sea vessel for overseas export. Mayor Dianne Watts and Mayor Wayne Baldwin recently proposed the ‘Rails to Trails’ campaign. It is the relocation of the BNSF track, or as they refer to this, as the ‘re-alignment’ of the BNSF track. coals that there is. Coal dust is a known carcinogen which contains heavy metals such as mercury and arsenic. Coal dust can smother field crops interfering with the light phase
of photosynthesis. Mercury will travel up the food chain to our dinner plates. There are 12,000 emergency room visits and one billion dollars in health care costs associated with coal. Black Lung Disease, chronic bronchitis emphysema as well as asthma attacks are all but to name a few of the illnesses. What has started as a campaign ‘Rails to Trails’ is truly about the increase of coal transfer. I just hope that by the time we dig out from from under all this coal dust,we, the public, will do the right thing: Oppose this application. ner,” he said. “At 5 p.m., we had dinner and finished about 7 p.m., but we did not dare go outside because it was impossible to move on the rubble without making a noise so we stayed in the church overnight.” He enlisted two days after Germany invaded Poland in September 1939. His five brothers enlisted as well. “With all six sons in service, I can well imagine the anxious moments my parents had during the war years, especially on the receipt of telegrams advising them that George had been killed in action and both Alec and I had been wounded,” said Fairweather, who lives in West Vancouver. For eight days in December of 1943, Canadian troops with the Seaforth Highlanders regiment from Vancouver were locked in a bloody house-to-house battle to claim the Italian town of Ortona from hardened German paratroops ordered by Hitler to hold it at all costs. Winning the town would give the Allies an important new port on Italy’s eastern Adriatic coast, shortening supply lines in the Italian campaign. But it was also a death trap, riddled with mines and snipers. Allied tanks and troops were vulnerable if they moved in the narrow streets. So Canadians advanced roof by roof, or by “mouse-holing” through the walls into adjacent buildings and clearing the enemy out. Nearly 1,400 Canadian soldiers died in the ruins of Ortona, dubbed Little Stalingrad, before the Germans were routed on Dec. 28.

A feast at the peak of battle on Christmas day 1943 From page 7
tuted with root beer and candy cigarettes for the cadets.) An organist played Silent Night while the men ate in shifts before returning to battle; they’d take control of Ortona two days later, but at a great cost – the lives of hundreds of men. On the 70th anniversa-
ry of the battle, cadets of 2812 Surrey, 2277 Langley, 1867 Delta, 2893 Port Coquitlam, 72nd Vancouver and 2963 Sechelt Corps were joined by officers, parents, and a documentary filmmaker. Cadets, dressed in their combat uniforms, were served by their officers in a solemn ritual steeped in Canadian military tradition, paying tribute to
those who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Second World War. Volunteers from the Canadian Military Education Centre wore vintage Second World War uniforms and lent artifacts from their personal collections for decoration and education, creating an added sense of realism to the evening. Tim Morris, chaplain
at Pacific Regional Institution, played the part of Major Roy Durnford, an Anglican military padre who prayed with the men. In preparing for Sunday’s anniversary dinner, organizers paid meticulous attention to detail, from securing an organist to erecting faux stained glass windows and stone church walls.

A table set off on its own was reserved to honour fallen comradesin-arms to remind those present of their sacrifice, said Karen Murphy Corr, of the 2277 Langley Corps sponsoring committee. Normally parents do the cooking for the Ortona dinner, observed by the cadets since 2001, but with all six corps under one roof, they turned to the pros: culinary experts Amanda Smith, chef, Mark Ross, head chef, and Drew Hill, sous-chef. “They are pulling out all the stops, Murphy Corr said. Surrey’s Raven Whitford of the 2277 Corps
was excited to attend the dinner and learn more. “I’ve always been interested in history and it sounded really cool to me, the Grade 7 student said. “I think it is important to remember who fought for us and gave us a free country. Jocelyn DeLorme said her grandfather, Pte. Jack DeLorme of the Loyal Edmonton Regiment, was tucking into his Christmas dinner in a nearby ruined house when when they came under attack. DeLorme was knocked unconscious. “He woke to a severed foot lying in the middle
of his precious Christmas dinner, she said. Another guest of honour was her grandmother, Fleetwood resident Dorothy DeLorme, widow of Private DeLorme. She has attended the dinner every year since 2001 and is considered the mother of the Seaforth Highlanders Battalion. “I am very happy to be here tonight and very honoured. I have seen many of you start as 12 and 13-year-olds, she said. “It has been a joy to see how each one of you has grown into such beautiful young men and women.
