Teck spreads awareness, funds around the issue of zinc health Trail Staff West Kootenay Advertiser
Teck, one of the largest zinc producers in the world, is showing its commitment to raise awareness around zinc health. Canadian partners in the Zinc Alliance for Child Health (ZACH) – Teck, the Micronutrient Initiative and the Government of Canada – just announced their investment of $1.5 million to expand a childhood diarrhea treatment program in the Indian State of Gujarat. The funding will amp up the existing program in 26 districts by training an additional 97,000 health care workers on the proper treatment of diarrhea using zinc and oral rehydration salts, which helps strengthen the immune system and accelerate recovery. Zinc is an essential micronutrient for all living organisms that protects the body from illness and helps fight infections. Though not necessarily an issue in the first world, zinc deficiency is seen worldwide. No life-threatening childhood illness affects more children than diarrheal disease.
Growing pains Sheri Regnier West Kootenay Advertiser
Trail staff met with the province last week for advice on how to move ahead with the plan to expand city limits. A delayed response from the regional district has Trail’s boundary expansion proposal on hold and the city looking for feedback on how to forge ahead. “Given the fact the regional district is not responding I’ve scheduled meetings with the Ministry,” David Perehudoff, Trail’s (CAO) told council during the governance meeting Nov. 25. “I hope to actually see about advancing our own proposal ahead of the regional district.”
In India, about 230,000 children die each year in result to dehydration, weakened immunity or malnutrition associated with it. “As one of the world’s largest producers of zinc, Teck is committed to addressing the problem of global zinc deficiency,” Teck Senior Vice President Doug Horswill was quoted in a news release. “Since 2011, nearly 270,000 children have benefited from zinc and ORS supplied by the Gujarat government health service delivery system “This new ZACH funding will help expand an already successful diarrhea treatment project, increasing access to this life-saving treatment for more than 1 million children under the age of five in Gujarat.” Last year, Teck Resources Ltd. signed a three-year agreement with BASF: The Chemical Company to jointly develop affordable zinc fortification and supplementation solutions for people who are not getting enough zinc in their diet. The partners will provide some 35 million people at risk of zinc deficiency with access to affordable zinc-fortified sta-
ple foods and supplements in 2014. This initial availability marks an important milestone for the three-year partnership, which is expected to provide access to zinc-fortified staple foods and supplements to nearly 100 million people. The high-quality zinc, supplied by Teck, has been provided to BASF, which has applied its food fortification expertise and used its global network to deliver zinc to those most in need. The zinc products will be delivered to developing countries through flour and rice premixes, as well as supplements. “It feels good that some of the zinc we produce here in Trail is going to go into this initiative of helping these people worldwide,” Richard Deane, Teck’s energy and public affairs manager, told the Times last year. In addition to the zinc-fortified products, a test kit commissioned by BASF and Teck to analyze the levels of zinc in premixes and staple foods has been developed by BioAnalyt. The mobile test kit, iCheck ZINC, provides quick, reliable and economic measures of zinc levels in real-time.

News/Education Room to grow in Boundary SD kindergarten & Gr 3 classes
submitted
A recent report on class sizes revealed that all School District 51 kindergarten classes are under the maximum number of
22 students and all Grade 1-3 classes are under their limit of 24. Two classes in the district from Grade 4-12 that are over their threshold of 30: one with
31 at Christina Lake Elementary and one of 33 students at Grand Forks Secondary School. SD51 superintendent of schools Kevin Argue reported there are conversations going
on as to how they are going to be supported. Student enrollment is down 28 students from the previous school year, which are 17 more than had been projected.
The full time equivalent number, which is used by the Education ministry to set funding for the year is down 28.1875 from the 2012-2013 year—13 more than had been projected.

Vandalism on Hardy Mountain GRAND FORKS STAFF West Kootenay Advertiser
City officials are concerned with a recent string of vandalism at the airport beacons on Hardy Mountain. The two separate events took place recently and thus far police have no leads. The first act of vandalism on the mountain top occurred when rocks were thrown at
the solar panels at the beacon site, according to Staff Sgt. Jim Harrison. It’s uncertain what damage there was. “Someone had broken some solar panels that provide power to the emergency air traffic lighting,” Cpl. Richard Lanz told the Gazette at the time. The estimated amount of damage was around $5,000. “Right now we don’t have any suspects,”
said Lanz. The city is spending money to fix the beacons and to provide extra security on the site. “This is a valuable regional resource for the entire boundary,” said Grand Forks Mayor Brian Taylor. “When it’s down, if there was an emergency—it would be big trouble for the person who’s flying in or trying to fly out. Taylor said the city

The call for help went out. Rossland Search and Rescue was in need of radios to help their members communicate when in the field and on rescue forays. And the Health Care Thrift Store answered. The ever giving group of volunteers at the city’s second hand store on Washington Street bequeathed Search and Rescue with the $5,000 they needed to secure six top-of-the-line radios, complete with all the fixings. Search and Rescue’s longest serving member, Graham Jones, said they had made a pitch to the thrift store board for funding earlier in the year, and their pitch was accepted. The donation helps
complete the circle of required gear and technology for the c o m mu n i t y - b a s e d group.
“Groups like ours, we can’t function without the generosity of different organizations within the community.” Graham Jones One year ago Search and Rescue purchased a new emergency response vehicle— something the crew has never had—to compliment their fully equipped mobile command trailer. But both units were not equipped with hand held radios that volunteers needed to stay safe and adequately do their jobs. “So if we jump into the truck and go and we send people into

the field we need to give them radios to help them stay in contact,” Jones said. “We go out into some pretty horrendous conditions, so (these radios) will help us stay in contact, and stay safe.” The money allowed search and rescue to purchase six radios and charging systems as well as spare battery packs.“Groups like ours, we can’t function without the generosity of different organizations within the community,” said Jones. Raising money is always an issue for Search and Rescue to keep up-to-date with training and to purchase the technology to keep members safe in the backcountry.
is looking into new security measures at the beacon site such as putting up fencing. “We’d like to put up fencing and possibly even add cameras,” he said. “We need to get to the bottom of who’s behind the vandalism. “These lights are critical to the safety of the community.

Tragic event commemorated Kirsten Hildebrand West Kootenay Advertiser
On Friday evening, December 6, groups in Nelson and other communities across the country reflected on the occurrence of violence against women and took the opportunity to stand up against it. A National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women was established by parliament to commemorate the anniversary of the 1989 Ecole Polytechnique Massacre in which 14 women were singled out for their gender and killed. The Nelson Violence against Women in Relationships Committee (VAWIR), a committee made up of representatives from community and justice agencies organized a candlelight vigil in memory of the horrible event. “That massacre was a grisly and horrendous depiction of gender violence,” said Aimee Beaulieu Transition House coordinator Anna Maskerine
A candlelight vigil was held Friday evening to mark the anniversary of the Montreal Massacre. Members of the community stood together in memory and against violence toward women.

prior to the event. “We don’t want to forget that. It’s an opportunity for women to come together to remember that event but also to be reminded it’s happening in our community — even as we stand in the vigil that night, it’s happening to women in our community — and that’s the part that we need to keep present in the
minds of community members.” Throughout Friday, an “I Am One” display was on display on the grounds of City Hall. At 2 p.m., a video and discussion was held and at 4 p.m., members of the community, Nelson Police Chief Wayne Holland and MLA Michelle Mungall attended the vigil.

Horoscope Michael O’Connor
for the
Week December 13, 2013
Tip of the Week: The final countdown has begun. I am referring to Winter Solstice. For many the emphasis is upon Christmas. For others the countdown only begins 10 seconds before midnight on December 31st each year. Yet, Winter Solstice is extra special and this year it occurs on December 21 at 9:11 am PST. The exact moment is when the sun enters Capricorn in the Tropical Zodiac, which measures the periodic and progressive cycle of the Sun’s light, which incidentally is ever changing throughout the year. In other words, each same minute of each day, let’s say the strike of 12 at noon reveals a subtle but sure shift of the Sun’s light than it did the day before or will the day after. All on its own this is a wonderful fact to consider and can contribute to you being here now each moment of each day. This annual cycle established itself literally billions of years ago which is a reminder that life on earth has evolved in this context. The celebration of the apparent path of the Sun beginning another 365.25 (or so) day cycle can also be understood in the factual verses the experiential sense with the recognition that the Earth itself begins a new cycle around the sun. Yes, both are ‘true’! In Simple terms, the marker for this new beginning is the sun’s light from the Earth’s perspective. It is this experiential reality that begins the new round, which we call Winter Solstice. Shrugging it off as ‘nothing new’ indicates a linear or parts oriented perspective. In other words, from our experiential perspective here on our home planet we can also recognize that the cosmic background is also ever changing and has never been the same before, nor will ever be. This is the true wonder of time and miracle of life: patterns repeat in close approximation yet every single second in time is unique.

Big changes are underway and you are on a march to engage them. Your situation can be described as an ascent of power. But more than simply a climb, this journey implies a literal transformation, inside and out. You are hardly in a frivolous mood. Sober thinking behind practical ambitions is leading you onward to greater heights. Whether in body, mind or spirit you are covering a lot of ‘ground’. By now you might think that you are used to it, this ongoing stretching process. It is not over yet though, so keep breathing into the stretch. You have about another six months to go. In the short-term, keep giving to your life flow. Call it necessary overtime. Weave in cultural stimulation to feel refreshed. A feeling of expansion on all fronts continues. Ideally this includes your confidence levels. Yet you have work to do for this to be true. Ironically, this includes letting go of control. Actually, this is the work of spiritual aspirants. To counter instinctive reactions with intuitive responses requires emotional self-control. “I am responsible for everything in my life” is the power mantra to this end. You are in a ‘go big or go home’ cycle. Well, for you this may include going big at home. In any case, it is extra important that you pay attention to the details. Gifts in the way of new tools, techniques, rhythms and routines are coming your way. Of course, beyond receiving them you have to open these gifts and implement them. By now you should be on a creative role. This includes entering new territory, which may not be literal as much as psychological, emotional and/or spiritual. Your fears may be stirred as a consequence. So, you have to dig deeper than usual to access a well of faith you have stored deep in your subconscious. The first key to accessing this store is to trust that it is there. Sometimes you ‘gotta get in to get out’. What ‘in’ means, is for you to decide. It could be a place, or a state or both. Or maybe you simply want to ‘get into it’ somehow. That could even be a deep and engaging discussion or debate with close friends. Hopefully, neither you nor they will aim to win at all costs. Engage in the journey/process as an end in itself.

Some very big ideas are stirring in your mind. These may well be accompanied by some big ambitions too. Yet, all this big focus may also be the cause of some big anxieties. To counterbalance these, aim to contract or concentrate all this big energy and focus into a smaller and more manageable focus. Aim big but start small. Sometimes we are in more of a gambling mood than others. This may be one of those times. Guided by intuitive hunches and inspired by imaginings of big wins is leading you on. Yet it takes courage to act upon such feelings. That is what the gamble implies – risk. A good gambler plays a smart game by concentrating on the goal and observing everything, undetected. Something new has begun or perhaps has been born into your life. Yet this new beginning comes in the midst of many things familiar, changing. It implies a whole new lifestyle. You are still in the foundational stages of what may be called a renovation process. This implies the importance of clearing the old to make way for the new. That’s a good place to start. A busy time doing work behind the scenes continues. Even if your social agenda is busier than usual you still will be busy behind or within. Inner work is at least as important as outer and includes communication with... your inner council. You may also feel the need for new tools, skills or training. Fortunately you are in the mood to try new approaches. An adventurous spirit is leading you on. Ironically, you may not be covering a lot of outer ground. This adventure and the new territory it implies could be new knowledge and/or philosophies and/or strategies. Fortunately, you are in the mood to acquire new knowledge. As well, you feel determined and able to overcome any obstacles, so persevere. Some big changes, momentums and/or initiatives have begun in your world. These are accompanied by an already awakened and active creative cycle. With these forces joined, the time has come to launch intentions and ambitions that have been brewing for months, perhaps even years. Balance inspired visions with practical goals for best results.

Fortieth in a series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names Corra Linn is one of three falls on the Kootenay River between Nelson and South Slocan, named along with Bonnington and Stonebyres by Sir Charles Ross after counterparts on the River Clyde in Scotland. According to the BC Geographic Names website, the name may come from the Gaelic “corrach
linne” meaning “angry cataracts” or “precipitous water.” Corra Linn is also the name of the dam on the falls and the area around it. But it’s frequently misspelled Corra Lynn — in fact, that’s how it’s appeared in the earliest known reference in the Nelson Daily News of June 22, 1906. It was also misspelled in the phone book, on the road sign, and on the “Corra Lynn Heights” subdivision sign. This annoyed the late Dave Mac-

Cooper Creek
COROLLA
This community is named for a stream that flows into the Duncan River just above the north end of Kootenay Lake. Its namesake is uncertain, but it was first mentioned in the Nelson Miner of September 5, 1891: “[I]t was found that a big fire had run through the country, damaging the trail for a distance of four miles and burning out the bridge across Cooper creek.” It also appears on Perry’s Mining Map of West Kootenay, published in 1893, while another map gives it as “Cooper or Stony Creek.” In a 1949 letter to A.G. Harvey, held by the BC Provincial Archives, Margaret Garland said it was after “a farmer who came to these parts ... The Cooper family took up land and later moved away. It has carried the name ever since.” (They must have departed by 1901, for no Coopers are in the area on the census that year.) Elsewhere Harvey stated Cooper was “a Kaslo trapper and prospector in the 1880s.” In the 1920s, a Mr. Cooper set up a sawmill at Cooper Creek, but according to Ernie Alexander in Lardeau Duncan Memories, the name was coincidental.

Winter Weather: Planning to arrive alive
‘‘
’’
Top ten winter road trip tips: 1. A full night’s sleep ahead of a long drive is important. 2. It’s also a good idea to let a friend know when you’re leaving and the time you expect to arrive. 3. Fill the windshield washer bottle with seasonal cleaner and carry an extra container in the trunk. 4. Don’t forget to bring sunglasses – glare from snow can be hard on the eyes. 5. Wear (warm) clothes that allow good movement to steer and operate the foot pedals. 6. Bring water plus non-perishable food supplies on longer trips. 7. An emergency (first aid) kit. 8. Check the weather forecast, road conditions and for road closures on your route before heading out on a long trip. 9. Good winter tires are mandatory on most high-elevation BC highway routes during the winter. 10. If you must drive in bad weather, it’s a good idea to refuel when the tank drops below half full. If the car breaks down or gets stuck in the snow, having engine heat until help arrives could be important. Useful winter driving web sites: drivebc.ca, icbc.com

A worthy new Jeep Cherokee at long last By: Zack Spencer
2014 Jeep Cherokee The Chrysler group is on a tear these days with month after month of consecutive growth and awards to back it up. Who would have thought a few short years ago that Chrysler, of the Detroit Three, would be in second place in Canada, just slightly behind Ford and well ahead of General Motors. BEGIN OPTIONAL CUT This has been achieved by filling a few holes in their full-line offensive. For example, until a year ago, Chrysler didn’t have a compact car, now they do with the Dodge Dart. END OPTIONAL CUT Most surprising is that the strong sales have established without have a vehicle to compete in the fastest growing segment, the compact SUV. Now, with the introduction of this all-new Jeep Cherokee, Chrysler has something to take on establish players like the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. BEGIN OPTIONAL CUT The new Cherokee has only been for sale for about a month now but sales for the Jeep brand are up more than 34 percent over last year. In addition, the new Jeep Cherokee just won its category (best new SUV under $35,000) as adjudged by the Automobile Journalist Association of Canada (AJAC). END OPTIONAL CUT Looks Some might not remember the old boxy Cherokee that was sold in the 1990s; it was a very simple design that appealed to diehard Jeep enthusiasts. This new Cherokee is trying to win over new buyers, not just the Jeep faithful. It might look a bit odd at first but when you are in its presence, the design actually grows on you to a pint that it has a futuristic, very modern twist on an iconic nameplate. BEGIN OPTIONAL CUT What you don’t see is the Italian Alfa Romeo platform that this Cherokee shares with the Dodge Dart. This provides a solid basis that produces a wonderful on-road experience and ruggedness for off-road duty. END OPTIONAL CUT There is a special Trailhawk version of this Cherokee that has been designed specifically for off-road, with higher front and rear bumpers to help it traverse ditches and climb mountains. The more practical base front wheel drive (FWD) model starts at $23,495 and is the lowest priced vehicle in the compact SUV class. The All wheel drive (AWD) model is also a value leader and starts at $25,695 Inside OPTIONAL CUT There are several things that set this Cherokee apart from the competition and a big difference is the level of interior fit and finish. Many of the vehicles
2014 Cherokee that compete in this class are rather basic inside and come covered in hard plastic and feature simple designs. END OPTIONAL CUT The Cherokee is covered in softtouch materials, comfortable seats and a large touch screen in the centre of the dash for connectivity. The base screen is 5-inches but a larger 8.4-inch screen is available on the $29,995 Limited model. In addition, all models get a second 3.5-inch screen imbedded in the instrument cluster that is fully programmable and provides custom readouts. The back seat isn’t huge but the seats again are contoured nicely and provide good comfort. They also slide forward to elongate the cargo area if larger objects need to be carried. The rest of the dash has a stylish design that is a good combination of the bigger Grand Cherokee and the functional Dodge Journey. Sweeping lines and attention to detail make this a class leader in terms of style and design. Drive Not content to use existing engines and transmission in this new Cherokee, Chrysler is showcasing brand new technology in this compact SUV, providing good fuel economy and value. All trim levels come standard with a 9-speed automatic transmission. That’s right, nine gears, the very first vehicle on the planet to come with this many cogs. Having a chance to drive it with the base 184hp 2.4L 4-cylinder through the canyons outside of Malibu California, I can report that the transmission is so smooth and refined that the driver forgets there is so much at work. The up side is the Cherokee is capable of 9.6.L/100km in the city and 6.4L on the highway. BEGIN OPTIONAL CUT The platform is a gem. There is very little road or wind noise, the suspension is very well dampened and the steering feel is better than many in this class. END OPTIONAL CUT The 4-cylinder engine is a great choice for commuters and the handling is crisp and sure-footed, more like a sedan than an SUV. The optional V6 engine is the first application of the 3.2L V6 Pentastar engine. The bigger 3.6L is used across the Chrysler family but this newly developed, smaller version is wonderful value as it is only $1,300 more to equip it on any continued on page B4

A worthy new Jeep Cherokee at long last the cabin or skiing. The downside is the added weight of the V6 makes it less nimble compared to the 4-cylinder but both are excellent choices. Mazda tops in Canada’s Top Twelve for 2014

speech.
By Bob McHugh
Mazda bagged three of twelve “Best New” 2014 model year category awards just announced by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). The triple award sweep (Mazda3, Mazda3 Sport and Mazda6) had to taste extra sweet as Mazda only had three entries in a field of over fifty vehicle entries. This also positions Mazda with three (of the final eight) contenders for overall 2014 Canadian Car of the Year. The 2014 Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year Award was also narrowed down to four “Best New” category award winners: the stylish all-new Jeep Cherokee (SUV/CUV under $35K), great value Kia Sorrento (SUV/ CUV $35K to $60K), luxurious Acura MDX (SUV/CUV over $60K) and the tough-asnails GMC Sierra 1500 pickup. AJAC award wins in both Best New Small Car categories (under $21K and over $21K), gives the Mazda3, in various forms, an impressive total of nine trophies over its ten year history. The Mazda6 is also a repeat winner, with previous category wins in 2009, 2005 and 2004, its introductory

year. Both the new Mazda3 and Mazda6 are now SKYACTIV-equipped vehicles and offer outstanding fuel economy. This was also a good awards event for General Motors, the recipient of two AJAC trophies in very different vehicle categories. In addition to the Best New Pickup Award, the 2014 Corvette Stingray was also voted the Best New sports Performance Car. “This is a monumental step for the Chevrolet brand and the first all-new Corvette, since the first Corvette ... we couldn’t be prouder of it,” said Rob Assimakopoulus, GM Director of Marketing, during his acceptance
The other double-award winning manufacturer was Kia. The Best New Family Car under $30,000 award went to the revamped Kia Soul. A new and softer rendition of its offbeat five-door wagon-like design plus numerous other refinements helped the surprisingly practical Soul out-perform the competition. The new Kia Sorento notched an even more impressive victory, as it was achieved in a highly competitive light-luxury SUV/CUV category ahead of some renowned competitive products. The AJAC awards are based on a methodical secret ballot voting process that was completed by over eighty journalist members following a five-day, hands-on driving event known as “TestFest”, which was held earlier this year in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Same-day, back-to-back evaluations were performed on handling, performance and off-road courses (where applicable), and on public roads. Here’s a complete list of all twelve categories winners: Best New Small Car (under $21k) Mazda3 Best New Small Car (over $21k) Mazda3 Sport Best New Family Car (under $30k) Kia Soul Best New Family Car (over $30k) Mazda6 Best New Luxury Car (under $50k) Lexus IS 350 RWD Best New Luxury Car (over $50k) Infiniti Q50 Hybrid Best New Sports/Performance Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Best New Prestige Car MercedesBenz S Class Best New SUV/CUV (under $35k) Jeep Cherokee Best New SUV/CUV ($35k to $60k) Kia Sorento Best New SUV/CUV (over $60k) Acura MDX Pickup GMC Sierra 1500 The accounting firm KPMG tabulated the ballots and the results were kept confidential until the public announcement. The full voting result and comparative data will be posted to the AJAC website (ajac.ca). Consumers are urged to use the data as a resource buying guide when shopping for a new vehicle. The twelve category winners now go on to compete for the top honour of being either the 2014 Canadian Car of the Year or the 2014 Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year. The overall winners will be declared on Thursday, February 13, 2014 at the beginning of media day at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto.

The need to speed is not universal among BC drivers By Keith Morgan
Reader reaction to our posted speed limit poll, conducted with Insights West, was, well, speedy! No sooner had the paper hit the streets, revealing that 37 percent of those polled believe a higher than 100 km/h limit should be posted on our major highways, than the emails began flying. Yours truly expressed some surprise that a majority did not share that opinion and that 55 percent believed speed limits should be left alone. While some readers disabused me of that notion an equal number agreed. Guenter Hoernig, of Penticton, asked: “What would you gain by, say, increasing the limits by 10 or 20 km/h? A half an hour earlier in Vancouver? Well, if you don’t have that extra 30 minutes, perhaps you should take the plane. “I don’t even understand why the public is consulted on this - as any results coming forth from them tend to be purely based on emotions. The safety of the highways should be left to traffic experts and scientists . . . .” Janet McGarry warned: “NASCAR inspired highways will only lead to more fatalities.” Currently, 100 km/h is the maximum on most freeways, while 110 km/h is posted on the Coquihalla Highway I Variable and parts of the Okanagan speed limits are Connector. used throughout Vernon resident Brian Romaine made an interesting Europe and seem suggestion: “My view is that effective. the speed sign should have a range of speed, for example Keith Morgan instead of say 100 km/h, make it 80 to 100 MAX. From a psychological point of view, the driver then sees the lower speed and perhaps would have less of a fixation on the max speed limit. Speed limits should be assessed by the experts to be safe for that particular highway and not necessarily increased.” Variable speed limits are used throughout Europe and seem effective. The maximum limits are posted on overhead electronic signs, which change to reflect environmental conditions and congestion. It is a recognition that speed alone is not the major cause of road carnage but excessive speed combined with over-driving the weather/road conditions does kill. The provincial government is currently reviewing posted limits and Jack Dubberly believes Victoria should hike them forthwith. “If the roads are better engineered, cars are safer . . . . then why not increase the speeds to that “average comfortable speed” that everyone is travelling at when the police are not looking? “The police can spend more time looking for bad drivers rather than speeding drivers and maybe the general driving public will then respect them more.” Laura Tomelin shared her driving philosophy: “Do not drink and drive, but drive at your own capabilities and get the hell out of the way of other drivers who take their own risks and feel comfortable doing so!” The more cynical of our readers, dismissed the current posted speed limits as being artificially low and designed not for safety reasons but as a way of generating cash for the government through fines. Transportation Minister Todd Stone will give BC residents an opportunity to express their views directly in a series of eight regional public forums set to run between now and January 24, 2014. For details of the Rural Highway Safety and Speed Review go to http://engage.gov.bc.ca/safetyandspeedreview. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Tough automotive acts to follow By Rob Sass
Most of the time, the automotive world doesn’t serve up a “Godfather II,” the rare sequel that is the equal or better of the original. Sometimes, you get “Godfather III.” Here are cars that today are regarded as classics in their own right, but initially had a hard time living up to the legacy of their predecessors: 1. 1958 Thunderbird: The original two-seater 1955-57 Thunderbirds — or “Baby Birds” — were recognized as classics almost as soon as they went out of production. They were replaced by a larger four-seater that came to be known as “The Square Bird.” While the Square Bird was an immensely popular car that handily outsold its predecessor, the original two-seater remains the one that most people think of when the topic of T-Birds comes up. 2. 1979 Datsun 280ZX: The 280ZX had the misfortune of following one of the all-time greatest classic sports cars, the Datsun 240/260/280Z. And it also committed the cardinal sin in the eyes of sports car enthusiasts (although not necessarily in the eyes of the buying public) of being heavier and more luxurious. It was derided by the magazines of the time as being a flashy “discomobile,” and collectors are only now starting to realize the merits of the comfy and more grownup ZX.
3. 1971 Oldsmobile Toronado: The first generation Toronado that appeared in 1966 was a stylistic and engineering tour de force. Reminiscent of the great classic Cord 810 of 1936, it was a milestone car for GM. Hardly anyone remembers its successor, the second generation Toronado. Where the ’66 broke the mold, the ’71 was the mold for generic American luxury cars of the 1970s.
1956 Ford Thunderbird: 1956 Thunderbirds like this one, along with other “Baby Bird” twoseaters, are thought to be more collectable. 4. 1976 Jaguar XJS: This one had the extreme misfortune of replacing one of the most beautiful cars of all time, the Jaguar E-Type. So naturally, people were predisposed to hate it when it came out. Other than initial quality control issues, which have become legendary, the XJS was neither a bad nor ugly car — quite the contrary. But for Jaguar, lightning just couldn’t strike twice: There was simply no way that the XJS could be as lovely as the E-Type. 5. 1974 Ford Mustang II: The early 1970s were dark times for the automobile. The Arab Oil Embargo of 1973 put the brakes on large displacement high performance engines. What was Ford to do about cars like the Mustang, whose reputation was built on V-8 performance? Replace it with a four-cylinder version based on the Pinto, of course. Although V-6s and V-8s were offered, it was the sting of the anemic four-banger that stuck with the II until Ford replaced it in 1979 with what would become the very good and very popular Fox body Mustang.
1958 Ford Thunderbird: 1958 Thunderbirds like this one may have out sold its predecessor but they are not as collectable today.

Kia sets standard with all the bells and whistles By Ian Harwood
In the 2014 Kia Sorento LX, there is more to see than you would expect. Have you ever seen an ad featuring something you really want, only to find out when you get there the price doesn’t include this and that and you leave feeling deflated? – Well, if it is a Sorento you’re going to see, then all the bells and whistles come standard. Looks A very stylish design, Kia’s new “design language”, blending emotion and sophistication, is the thought behind this design. Swept back headlights with a molded front bumper. Projector style headlights and integrated turn signal lights on the side mirrors make this cross-over SUV stand out Interior
The driver seat is an 8 way power adjustable with lumbar support and offers heating, and the rear seats are a 60/40 split folding. There is also an option to add a third row which would be a 50/50 split. There is a AM/FM/CD/MPS voice activated 6 speaker stereo with SiriusXM satellite radio (Includes three month trial) Bluetooth hands free capabilities and Aux, USB input ports. Safety The safety features on this vehicle are vast, and here are some of the highlights. Dual advanced front airbags, dual front seat mounted side airbags, dual side curtain airbags with rollover sensor, electronic stability control, vehicle stability management , traction control system, hill assist, anti-whiplash front headrests, continued on page B11
2014 KIA Sorento
the more the better European-styled instrumentation and controls. Suddenly the Germans just got very nervous. Fourteen storage compartments, including under the floors. That’s two per passenger!
All-new 2.0L GDI engine. Loaded with torque to get to the ski hill fully loaded.
For years, the more people a vehicle carried, the less flattering it became. The new Kia Rondo changes all that. In both the five- and seven-passenger versions, Kia has put stunning, functional design and comfort at the centre of the Rondo experience. It is not a boring people mover, but a people pleaser. With its material workmanship, modern technology and unique style, Kia makes the multi-passenger family vehicle better for all.

5 year/ 100,000 km powertrain 5 year/ 100,000 km roadside assistance Roadworthy: My tester was the Sorento LX. I found the vehicle to handle very nicely around town. The multi-link rear suspension kept the vehicle from rolling side to side in higher speed cornering and gave the overall ride a comfortable feeling. The electric power steering really helped in tight maneuvering. Power was impressive and for a smaller lighter vehicle, the motor was well matched. Fuel economy numbers were good and, if driven sensibly, I am sure you could stretch these numbers to be even better. I was very surprised to see this many features offered as their standard package, great value for your money. Sticker price: LX AWD $28,695 LX V6 $29,495 EX V6 $35,395 SX $40,595

Pick of the Week: BMW
Artist Jeff Koons presented the North American premiere of his BMW Art Car, the M3 GT2 racecar, at the Art Basel event in Miami Beach. The BMW Art Car Collection started when French racing driver and auctioneer Hervé Poulain invited his friend Alexander Calder to design his BMW Le Mans 24-hour racecar in 1975 and so the BMW Art Car was born. Since then some of the greatest names in contemporary art have been added to the collection creating a wide range of artistic interpretations and there are now 17 BMW Art Cars in total.

ICBC Safety Tip
Drives-U-Crazy Watched a guy labour for 20 minutes the other day scraping the ice from his windshield, side and rear windows. Then he jumped in his car and took off without paying any attention to the snow on the car roof. I figured that ten minutes into his journey the snow would slide down onto his windshield, obscuring his vision and thus putting him at risk of collision with some other innocent road user. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.
If you’re looking for a new vehicle as a holiday gift, consider looking for some of the latest safety features such as electronic stability control and ABS brakes. For a small price differential, you could get a whole lot more protection.
