Radon bylaw progressing with glacial speed JIM SINCLAIR Castlegar News Editor

Further to an item touched upon in the council briefs of last week’s Castlegar News, an issue relating to a dangerous natural hazard appears to be languishing in a bureaucratic holding pattern. The issue is radon gas mitigation being built in to the provincial building code, so it may be applied
locally. At the core of the issue are a couple of key points – the fact that Castlegar: • has radon levels that are among the highest in the province, and, • is home to a knowledgeable and outspoken advocate for boosted safeguards to deal with the carcinogenic gas. Dana Schmidt is the man who has acquired a wealth of data on the topic
and pushed hard for regulations to help reduce the risk of the invisible, tasteless, odourless gas. He is the driving force behind the Donna Schmidt Memorial Lung Cancer Society, an entity formed to honour his spouse who passed away in 2009. The society has partnered with the City of Castlegar to provide hundreds of free long-term radon testing units.
Well known steps may be taken to reduce radon risk during the construction of homes and larger buildings, and retrofitting of existing structures may also be done, although more expensive and time consuming. Those looking for a provincial building bylaw have found support in Castlegar, if not at higher levels. The latest installment
in the ongoing issue was at the council meeting of Dec. 2, 2013, when council received for information the most recent communication on the matter from Rich Coleman, Minister Responsible for Housing and Deputy Premier. The letter was in response to a message from Phil Markin...

Completion of the toddler playground at Kinsmen Park is in sight, and a call is out to the public to help make it happen. A Toonies for Tots donation jar campaign is being launched this month to help raise funds for the project. The addition of a fire engine to promote imaginative play will complement the rescue theme of the smaller play pieces installed last spring. Safe, age-appropriate playground equipment for toddlers and pre-schoolers is important to support healthy, outdoor activity and encourage young families to spend time at Kinsmen Park. It’s a perfect location, with its

proximity to the waterpark and the library. “We want to have the playground ready for spring, so our last fundraising push is on,” says Arlee
Venier, chair of the Castlegar Early Childhood Advisory Council (CECAC). With the support of local businesses, the campaign will help bring in cash do-
nations and raise awareness for individuals who wish to make larger tax deductible contributions. The CECAC has raised over 75 per cent of the funds needed to complete the project, with the support of the City of Castlegar, Columbia Basin Trust, Kootenay Savings Credit Union, Heritage Credit Union, West Kootenay Toy Run Association, RDCK Area I, and individual donors. Look for the donation jars at the library and local businesses. To make a tax deductible contribution, or to host a donation jar at your business site, call Penny Tees at 250-226-7605.
Effort continues toward radon bylaw Continued from P. A1
...Castlegar’s director of Development Services this past July. Markin’s letter had re-asserted points aiming to add a sense of urgency to the matter of building bylaw adjustment. Uniformity, as it happens, is what Minister Coleman cites as a reason not to draft a bylaw that would apply to regions of the province where radon is not such a big concern. Here is a portion of Coleman’s response to Mr. Markin’s letter: “The Province continues to pursue the objective of a uniform British Columbia Building Code, which provides the building industry with the most effective and efficient regulatory system
“ I want to know more about mutual funds.”
while protecting the public interest in health and safety. For this reason I do not approve your request, as additional construction requirements made by local bylaw are contrary to this objective.” The Minister, however, did go on to invite the City of Castlegar to participate in a joint government/BC Lung Association mitigation pilot project. “The pilot project will provide data that will allow us to determine if modifications are required to the minimum construction standards for radon and what they should be,” stated the Minister. “I was very disappointed in the minister’s response,” Dana Schmidt told the Castlegar News on December 9 in an email, “as he is well
aware that the current provincial standards for radon building codes are not uniform across the province, with major portions of the province exempt from the current building codes related to radon mitigation because of low geological potential for radon generation.” Further, Schmidt declared, “…it seems ironic that when a community with extremely high radon potential asks for building codes standards that are affordable and provide for actual improvements in radon levels in homes, he (Minister Coleman) cites the need for uniformity as his reason for denial. “However, I do agree that the best outcome would be for all of the province with high radon potential to en-
act provisions similar to the Castlegar proposed bylaw. The data provided by the Donna Schmidt Lung Cancer Prevention Society clearly demonstrates the high level of radon present in new homes in Castlegar.” Finishing on a proactive note, Schmidt’s email related, “In the meantime, I would encourage all Castlegar residents and those in the construction industry to provide radon resistant construction techniques. “The Donna Schmidt Lung Cancer Prevention Society continues to provide long term radon detectors so our citizens can determine if the air in their homes has acceptable levels of radon and these are distributed at Golder Associates office on Columbia Avenue.”

Pot poll just a warm-up
How long is the shelf life of an opinion? Or in the case of the recently-concluded Sensible BC petition, what is the best way to encourage people to freely express their opinion with no fear of the potential consequences of their actions. Some accounts relating to the provincewide effort to change the way marijuana is dealt with, as described on the preceding page, are quite jarring. Insults, minor assaults and damage to property are some of the sidebars to the story. One can only imagine the level of passion/hostility if the petition involved any number of hotter button issues. The fact that the organizers’ desired results were not achieved, is no reason to think the issue can be laid to rest. As front man Dana Larsen insists, they’ll be back for more as soon as the regulations permit... better prepared and more determined than ever. Similar processes are also going on over pipelines, mines, dams and other projects with huge economic and environmental implications. Do you suppose someone is going to give up on a plan just because a vote or two may not go their way? The next vote is always being planned and worked toward, with more preliminary advertising, more impassioned spokespersons, more experts and more data. With a mine, export terminal, pipeline or massive dam, to use a few examples, it could be suggested the issue is sort of put to bed when construction is complete and operation kicks in. But with legislation like marijuana laws that can change according to public opinion or people’s willingness to express it... the issues never die, only the potential dates of the referenda. We want to hear from you.

Three Days of Heaven Three days. What’s three days in a person’s life? Not much if you are simply marking the days and living each one as they come. On the other hand, three days can be a lesson in life. It can be a tool to open your eyes to those things which are important. My husband turned 60 in August. His beautiful children gave him a wonderful gift. Anyone who knows my husband knows he is a hockey fanatic. He loves the Montréal Canadiens. For his landmark birthday, his children bought him a Jean Béliveau jersey and a return flight to Montreal for their game against the Boston Bruins on Dec. 5. On Wednesday, Dec. 4, he flew out to Montreal to meet up with his children who were joining him there for the game and some sightseeing as well. Just a note of interest, while my husband is a Canadiens fan all the way, his son is a diehard Bruins fan who despises the Canadiens. As most of you likely know, I am not a hockey fan in any way, shape or form, especially after gamely enduring months of hockey, hockey, hockey on the television. The thought of having just over three days to myself (sans hockey) was exhilarating! Cindy Amaral Production Manager
Sandy Leonard Production
My husband and I spend a lot of time together. For the most part, we are together 24/7 and we both enjoy that. We have a lot to talk about, we have great, thoughtful discussions and we both enjoy the other’s sense of humour. Simply said, we have a great time together. We are each other’s best friend. It’s not just a cliché - we really and truly are best friends. But the thought of having those three days alone eating what I wanted, when I wanted and how I wanted and doing whatever I darn well wanted (all the while with hubby’s beloved remote in my hand without interruption) was pure bliss. Three days of me, me, me! I was picturing it in my head. Three days alone! Let me hasten to say that my husband is a wonderful man, and there is nothing wrong with him per se, but I am sure those of you in a committed relationship understand that eating candy, all day, every day, non-stop sometimes leaves you hungering for a simple glass of water. That birthday gift was my refreshing drink of water. Or so I thought. The morning the Mister left wasn’t what I expected. Not in the least. As I watched him packing his bags and readying himself for his adven-

ture it suddenly struck me that he would really and truly be gone for three days. Let me tell you, I warred with my conflicting emotions. Then, as I watched him walk out the door, the reality struck me hard as I realized that never, in our whole time together, have we spent three days apart. I realized at that moment that things were going to get interesting. Prior to him leaving, I told my husband not to worry about me, I’d be fine. In fact, I advised him against bothering to call home, but rather take all the opportunity he could to treasure every single second with his children. I thought we had agreed upon that. But I was mistaken. Men never listen, do they? Sure enough, he called me the very next day and I’m not ashamed to say that I was so very glad he did. I had missed him and let’s face it, his remote is not anywhere as interesting and endearing as he is. Now, I’m sure my teeth are going to rot because I learned that I’ll take that candy any day over the water. I missed him more than I could have imagined. And here’s another cliché for you, the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. Jim Sinclair Editor

Spanks to the truck with a HickShow sticker on the back for cutting us off and driving like a maniac on icy roads coming back from Trail. I had my kids in the car and you are lucky we didn’t crash! SLOW DOWN crazy winter drivers.
Thanks to all our emergency workers and personnel working hard in the cold and extreme conditions to help all those in need. Including plumbers out working full days weekends and evenings to get those in need heat.
Spanks to everyone who is rushed and cranky at this time of year. Give yourself an extra five minutes in anticipation for some line ups. Say please and thank you. Relax and enjoy the holidays. Thanks to all of my co-workers at a certain seniors’ residence for being so wonderful. Thanks to the people and organizations who teamed up to arrange emergency medical care for a friend’s pet.

Hospital Light-Up event shines brightly

Carol singers, baked treats and a jubilant throng were all on hand for the 2013 version of the important Hospital Light-Up Event at the Castlegar and District Community Health Centre on Friday, December 6. Light-Up is a key time for fundraising efforts and a tremendous boost was given as the local hospital auxiliary expressed monetary support in the amount of $20,000 to the Castlegar Hospital Foundation. The money has been specified to purchase the V.A.C. Therapy System 101 which promotes wound healing. This money was raised through the Hospital Auxiliary Treasure Shop (thrift store). The cost of the medical device is approximately

I need to resolve this, need answers for the nasty, painful time I had in these doctors’ care. That is why I am going public. Maybe one of these doctors who got a letter for an explanation will now give me the “truth” for my sake! Be brave. Go for it doctors, you might feel better, I sure as “H” do. Thank you. Each of these doctors after I’d waited hours to see them -became very strange, they did not address my problem that made me go to ER in the first place. The Castlegar doctor said hello (I did not know Her) She went to the ER computer, came back and told me, with no explanation, to go home. In shock - I did so. In Trail I was sitting on a

Opinion/Editorial Should We Hunt Grizzly Bears in BC? submitted
Trophy hunting of grizzly bears is one of the most controversial issues in British Columbia and has been a thorn in the side of the BC Ministry of Environment for many years. Poll after poll shows that the vast majority of British Columbians want the practice discontinued; Environment Ministry officials as well as biologists are often vehemently divided. Although some of BC’s grizzly populations are healthy, many are not. Is the trophy hunt really sustainable or should we err on the side of caution and bring it to an end?
Author Jill Bisaro is a second year Recreation, Fish and Wildlife student at Selkirk College in Castlegar. Submitted
North American grizzlies, also called brown bears, are related to brown bears that are found throughout Europe and Asia. Because of human encroachment, their habitat has been diminished worldwide at an alarming rate. Over the last century, the North American grizzly population has been reduced by half; roughly 1,000 grizzlies remain in the lower 48 states. Grizzly bears are red-listed according to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, meaning they are in danger of being wiped out. Still, the organization believes there are enough bears worldAD. #1

Op/Ed contributor suggests a review of bear hunting rules. metrocreativeconnection
wide and that, with the proper hunting regulations, the species should do fine. Unfortunately, not all bear researchers in British Columbia, or elsewhere, agree. The disturbing case of Dionys DeLeew, a BC Ministry of Environment bear biologist, comes to mind. In 2000 he was suspended without pay and given a gag order for distributing an internal report questioning population estimates and suggesting that the yearly kill rate in BC was not sustainable. Since 1977, the province of British Columbia has awarded grizzly hunting tags using a lottery system and has based the potential ‘take’ in management zones on population estimates. In the past, because grizzly bears are notoriously difficult and expensive to count, population estimates may not have been accurate. Over the last decade or so, studies using DNA from hair samples have made counting bears easier and more accurate. Using these techniques, Michael Proctor, a Kootenay bear biologist, found that two of the four management units he was studying contained only half of the originally estimated bear populations. The BC ministry of Environment and the BC Guide Outfitters Association maintain that the number of bears taken in the bi-annual hunts is well managed and sustain-
able. A recent study, however, found great uncertainty in population estimates, mortality numbers and recovery levels. The uncertainty is further exacerbated by the potential of climate change, changing food sources, forestry and development, as well as unpredictable factors such as bears getting struck by vehicles or unreported kills by ranchers. Researchers have found that in the last decade, the province’s own allowable harvest numbers were surpassed at least once in each of the 50 grizzly bear populations open to trophy hunting. They feel that in order to reduce the risk of grizzly bear overkill, hunting should be eliminated in at least one-third of BC’s management units. The killing of grizzlies or any other large animal, for reasons other than sustenance, is increasingly perceived by the public as immoral and the science supporting a hunt seems to be questionable at best. Grizzly bears in BC are a priceless resource that should not be put at risk for finance, foreign hunters or the pleasure of the minority. It would seem to be most prudent to halt it now until the real numbers are in. The weather outside was truly frightful but inside the Royal Canadian Legion Christmas Tea last weekend it was warm, friendly and tasty. When asked how long the teas have been going (spring and fall), Judy Brown replied “For 50 years. We have several ladies here today who are life members.” Margaret Kozak says “I have been a member for 46 or maybe even 47 years - something like that.” Kay Bate, attending the table for the tickets, says she’s been a member for 67 years. “I have been around for many teas. We always have the teas spring and fall, and we also do a lot of catering to different groups who want to have their event here. Our Legion members do all the cooking.”

The Legion is always looking for new members to help out at various functions. The spring and fall teas are good fundraisers for several main groups who benefit from these ladies’ efforts. In particular the transition house, and support-

in the hidden compartments of your house? Modern PURAIR, a full-service furnace and duct cleaning company based out of Castlegar, travels regularly to Greater Trail to help homeowners expose and get rid of what is hiding in their vents. “We have a lot of funny stories,” said owner Hollie Tayal. “Very memorable was the time we were cleaning a strata building and in the very last dryer vent, out crawled five baby birds, and I mean babies, no feathers yet or anything.” Tayal said with no “mama bird” in the vicinity, the technicians transported the babies to a local animal shelter, and with a small donation, was assured the birds would be cared for. “The shelter fed them, sent us pictures as they grew, and eventually all were healthy and flew away.” Living rurally has it’s challenges when dealing with critters. One of Tayal’s customers calls the company to clean her dryer vent annually. “Every year we go to remove a large nest and odds and ends that a pack rat leaves in her dryer vent over the winter,” she said. “And every year we tell her she can put a screen or cover on it to prevent infestation, but she doesn’t want to. “She says she ‘doesn’t want to put him out of his house,’” laughed Tayal. But on a more serious note, the service that Modern PURAIR provides to many residential homes and commercial facilities in Greater Trail are health related. “These days building codes make the facility or home airtight,” she explained.
Date: Stage:
05/23/12 Final
“And most of us spend 90 per cent of our time indoors without getting any fresh air.” Unlike a quick clean up of dust on a dining room table, she said duct systems are out of sight and out of mind. “Studies show inside air can be 1,000 per cent more contaminated than outdoor air.” The Modern PURAIR service begins with a visit from a technician who will conduct a walk-through; give a powerful vacuum to the duct system; and finish with a contact cleaning scrub system that actually enters the duct system and scrubs all four sides. Typically what is removed is dust, skin particles, animal dander, mold spores, viruses and bacteria. “Once we are done the cleaning, we show our clients everything that was removed from their duct system,” she said. The technician will remove the disposal filter, but lets the customer rifle through it. On occasion, clients have retrieved long lost items such as old collectible baseball cards, coins, and jewelry. A complete cleaning includes the duct system, furnace, fan and related parts, 15 heat vents and cold air intakes for $349. Depending on the age of the home, medical history of asthma or allergies, animals and foot traffic, it is recommended to book the service every two to three years. Hours are Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. with a one hour promise time on appointment day. For more information or to book an appointment, call Tayal at Modern PURAIR at 250-365-0030.

Beautiful, Musical Sunday
About 60 music lovers made the investment of a couple of hours on Sunday at Castlegar United Church and all were happy about it. The event was the latest in the Kootenay Gallery’s TD Concert Series. The Selkirk “Camerata Strings,” featuring members of the Selkirk Chamber Orchestra, mostly from Nelson, performed a showcase of classical music by composers including Mozart, Handel, Mendelssohn Elgar and Barber, beautifully performed and engagingly and informatively introduced. Pictured from left, ensemble leader Wendy Herbison, Vic Neufeld, Josette LaForge and Lena Ruiz (violins); Martine Den Bok and Miranda Hughes (Violas); Alex Nichol (bass) Bronwyn LeBlanc and Jeff Faragher (cellos). Winter Weather: Planning to arrive alive
‘‘
’’
Top ten winter road trip tips: 1. A full night’s sleep ahead of a long drive is important. 2. It’s also a good idea to let a friend know when you’re leaving and the time you expect to arrive. 3. Fill the windshield washer bottle with seasonal cleaner and carry an extra container in the trunk. 4. Don’t forget to bring sunglasses – glare from snow can be hard on the eyes. 5. Wear (warm) clothes that allow good movement to steer and operate the foot pedals. 6. Bring water plus non-perishable food supplies on longer trips. 7. An emergency (first aid) kit. 8. Check the weather forecast, road conditions and for road closures on your route before heading out on a long trip. 9. Good winter tires are mandatory on most high-elevation BC highway routes during the winter. 10. If you must drive in bad weather, it’s a good idea to refuel when the tank drops below half full. If the car breaks down or gets stuck in the snow, having engine heat until help arrives could be important. Useful winter driving web sites: drivebc.ca, icbc.com

Drives-U-Crazy
Watched a guy labour for 20 minutes the other day scraping the ice from his windshield, side and rear windows. Then he jumped in his car and took off without paying any attention to the snow on the car roof. I figured that ten minutes into his journey the snow would slide down onto his windshield, obscuring his vision and thus putting him at risk of collision with some other innocent road user. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

“And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.” – Matthew 1:21 Last month we considered the question, “Who is Jesus Christ?” and what better topic to contemplate during the Christmas season? We saw previously that the Bible declares Jesus is the God of the universe. This is clearly seen at His birth, “Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.” (Matthew 1:23) From His virgin birth to the title “Emmanuel” it is obvious that this child born unto us was not merely another member of Adam’s fallen race; but within His human form was a pure and divine nature untainted with sin. In fact, He was God in human flesh; born of woman for He became a man, yet without the natural agency of a man for He was God. The Prophet Isaiah listed other names to describe this virgin born Child – “For unto us a child is born, unto us a
son is given: ... and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6)

heartaches, temptations, and struggles of life. He is not a distant deity or some cosmic judge aloof from mankind, He is a loving Saviour who experienced every emotion and internal turmoil you experience. Remember this is God we are talking about. Why would He face all of that? Well, because He loves you and wants to identify with you - moreover, His love moved Him to provide redemption from our sins. “He shall save His people from their sins”! He became man in order to redeem man. Although He faced all that we face, He did it without sinning so that His blood shed on the cross could be the perfect, atoning sacrifice for sin. So you see, the gift the Lord gave at Christmas was the gift of Himself, coupled with salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin for all who will receive it by faith. Will you receive His precious gift and trust Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour? If you feel you need more help to know the Saviour please feel free to contact me. Merry Christmas!
Bible Truths There can be no mistake, He is God. Furthermore, Jesus is the Saviour. Why would the God of heaven condescend to become a man? He not only took on the form of a man but He went through the entire process of birth, of being a helpless infant, of adolescence, and growing to adulthood. Remember “Emmanuel” means “God with us”! He was with us in all of the

December is here, Santa has arrived in the shopping malls and the pressure is on to finish buying holiday gifts. Why not ease the pressure and beat the crowds by giving homemade food as gifts? Holiday baking is a popular gift, but let’s face it, some popular baked goods can be high in fat and sugar. In light of the rising obesity rates in Canada, maybe it is time to consider giving healthier goodies to the people we care about. Instead of giving truffles and Nanaimo bars, why not bake a loaf of homemade whole wheat bread wrapped with a festive ribbon? Try drying fruit, such as apples and apricots and layering the pieces in a decorative bag for festive flare. Fruit bas-

This past Sunday was a busy hub of family activities at the Pass Creek Hall. The Pass Creek Neighbourhood Association was hosting their First Annual Winter Holiday Celebration. Things started with a complimentary brunch, but quickly became a very busy production site of highly crafted cookies decorated one at a time by skilled junior crafts-people. Santa, of course, was there overseeing production but there was plenty of time for play and for pictures. A photographer was on hand to paint into pictures all the fun with Santa. The Pass Creek Fire Department showed up in a shiny big truck. It didn’t stop there, but went on into early evening with chili, bonfire and fireworks. The non-profit association was formed in July to build a strong inclusive community and creating food security. Judging by all the smiles and warm tummies they are already succeeding at achieving their goals.

48 Gifts for Wine Lovers
submitted
Let’s face it. Most of us don’t really need another pair of gloves, an ugly tie or monogrammed handkerchiefs (do they even make those any more?). Mostly, we just don’t need more stuff. Buying a gift for someone who enjoys wine is easysqueezy and in Creston it’s getting easier each year. With three wineries now producing excellent wines, a couple of fruit juice makers and other related businesses stoking wine lovers’ dreams, shoppers don’t have to look far to fill their list. When we head east to Calgary for Christmas, our car is stocked with Creston products, and the odd one from around the province. This year the Prius will be laden with wines from Skimmerhorn Winery and Vineyard, Baillie-Grohman Estate Winery and Wynnwood Cellars, not to mention bottles from Tabletree and William Tell. (Not to worry about space— on one memorable trip to the Okanagan we learned that a Prius can hold four adults, luggage and 11 cases of wine. But that’s another story!) Our treasures will also include a selection of wines from some of our favourite stops in the Okanagan. From Skimmerhorn our stock will include bottles of Old Koot. This new Port-style wine is an unusual treat, being much less sweet than most Ports. Fortified with alcohol made in the Skimmerhorn still, it features dark chocolate and cherry aromas with plum, black currant and cherry flavours. Perfect for an after dinner treat, with or without dessert. And Skimmerhorn fans will be pleased to know that white Kootenay Crush is now available at the wine shop, too. Our family members might get a little nervous if I didn’t show up with some of the current Baillie-Grohman selections. Especially popular are the always glorious, and different with each vintage, Blanc de Noirs, a rose wine made with Pinot Noir grapes. And, of course, there is the lovely 2011 Pinot Noir Estate wine, a must buy for those who favour the Heartbreak Grape. With this grape, the only broken hearts come when the BG Pinot Noir sells out. Wynnwood Cellars has sold out of its popular white wines and the wine shop is closed
until spring, but partner Dave Basaraba reports that 2011 Pinot Noir and 2012 Merlot are available at private liquor stores in the Creston Valley. What do about the turkey dinner conundrum? What goes best with a dinner that tends to be heavy and often includes Brussels sprouts, which don’t go pair well with anything, event water? (Okay, I exaggerate. But not by much!) I prefer lighter wines that have some spicy aspects. It’s a rare Rose that doesn’t enhance the dinner and the colours are invariably festive. Depending on the vintage, the grape/s used and the winemaking process, they can range from pale salmon to bright cranbrerry, from bone dry to semi-sweet. Rose wines have become hugely popular in recent years and not only during the hot days of summer. White wines—when I think of turkey Gewurztraminer comes to mind—can also go nicely with a Christmas bird. Sauvignon Blanc is a less common choice, but one worth exploring. I’ve said it before, but it’s worth repeating—arriving at your host’s door bearing a bottle of The Sage, a wild sage-infused Gewurz from Silver Sage Winery in Oliver is a surefire way to get welcomed back. If sage and onion stuffing is on the menu there is no better match than this off-dry wine. For gifts, we like to include wines that we have purchased directly from wineries, ones that have been memorable for us. Among our choices this year might be bottles from Serendipity Winery, a treasure among Naramata wineries, Summerhill Pyramid Wineries, where the Cipes family keeps hauling in international awards for their sparkling wines, Fairview Cellars, where BC “Cab Man”, Bill Eggars, makes fantastic red wines, and Moraine Winery, which produces really good wines and really good prices. The list goes on. And on. The huge bonus in this Digital Age is being able to order on-line from many BC wineries, which can ship orders right to your door. And many now have wine clubs, where a usually free membership provides for regular shipments and discounts on the product. It makes shopping particularly easy in the winter, when highway travel can get a little dicey.
I am especially proud to include Tabletree juices in my gift-giving, and to tell people about how this little company operated by Susan and Gary Snow has, for two straight years, been a finalist in the World Juice Awards in Europe. It has won once and been a runner-up this year, but the juices are undeniably of all-world caliber. All made right here in the Creston Valley, with only local fruit. A new addition this year has been the William Tell Juice Company, which is selling its products at the Farmers Market and in other outlets in an ever-expanding territory. We took a couple of bottles to Calgary last month so that our son and his newly pregnant wife could celebrate with a sparkling, non-alcoholic cider. How did the William Tell Sparkling Old-Fashioned Cider go over with them? We got a message on the weekend: Can you bring more when you come for Christmas! Of course it isn’t only just bottles of wine that make good gifts. Tigz Designs, open this season on Canyon Street, makes breathtakingly beautiful gift baskets using local products, including scrumptious Kootenay Alpine Cheese. Drop into any Creston Valley retailer, or check out the Farmers Market, and chances are there is something for the wine lover on your gift list. Beer lovers take their passion seriously, and we have never disappointed one with a gift purchased at the Kokanee Beer Gear Store at Columbia Brewing. When we travel it is surprising to learn how many people around the world are familiar with Creston—because they know where Kokanee beer is made. Finally, for a really personally touch, consider giving local art. Wine lovers tend to be art lovers, too, so even art works that don’t include wine in their theme are likely to be a hit with the recipient. ‘Tis the season, as we say. It’s always important to keep safety in mind and to ensure enjoying wine, beer or other alcoholic beverage includes not driving and endangering others. Make a plan that includes a designated driver or cab when visiting, and stick to it.

REGULAR SEASON GAME
Castlegar News Contributor
CASTLEGAR REBELS VS FERNIE
Upcoming hockey players are getting a chance shine at Rebels’ games. There has been unique sight between first and second periods in the last couple of Rebels games. No, the Rebels and their opposing team have not suddenly shrunk into mightymites between periods. It’s a team of seven and eight year olds playing their hearts out for their parents and the rest of the Rebels’ fans. The scrimmages are exciting as the puck goes from one end to the other with spectacular shots on net and fancy goaltending. At the last Rebels game the Castlegar Kings broke into two teams to play each other and wow the crowd. The Kings are a senior novice team, they don’t play in specific league but play one or two games a week organized by their coaches and management with teams from Grand Forks, Beaver Valley, Nelson and Trail. They also practice twice a week at Pioneer Are-

na or the ice at the Castlegar Complex. The coaches and manager are all parents. Hockey in Canada always involves dedication by not only the players but, of course, by their proud parents as well. Tim Hortons also sponsors hockey and many other sports at this age level with jerseys, socks, toques, medals and other goodies for many teams. This coming January there is National Minor Hockey Week. At the end of January,
Castlegar will host a hockey tournament in the Castlegar Kings’ age group with 30 teams invited including squads from Spokane and all over B.C. This Friday Dececmber 13 the Castlegar Rebels play the Fernie Ghostriders, a fitting team for a Friday the 13th tilt. It is time for the Rebels to do a little ghost busting! A novice hockey team will once again entertain fans between periods. Alright... drop the puck!

Audrey Vivian Patterson Passed away on November 25, 2013 at the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital in Trail. She was born in New Westminster on November 26, 1928. Audrey was the youngest daughter of James and Jill Patterson. Audrey was pre-deceased by her brother James and is survived by her sister, Janice Taaffe, her nephews, James and Jeffrey, niece, Elizabeth, and Canadian cousins, Bruce and David Bodwell, and Leslie, James, Richard and Ronald Waldie. For many years, Audrey taught grade one at various schools in the Trail area. A respected and loved teacher, she gave many of Trail’s children a solid and grounded start to their education. She also spent three years in Europe teaching at the Canadian forces base in Marville, France. This became her base for exploring Western Europe. As a result of her European experience, Audrey became a passionate and thoughtful traveler. After she retired from teaching, Audrey continued to travel the world, free of vacation restrictions and loved experiencing different cultures and countries. What she loved most about her travels, however, was returning to her beloved Kootenays and resuming the rich and textured life she created for herself there. A celebration of Audrey’s life will be held at a later date. Jordan Wren of Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services™ has been entrusted with arrangements. You are invited to leave a personal message of condolence at the family’s online register at www.myalternatives.ca
