A Langley Township bylaw that would ban medicinal marijuana cultivation on farmland is opposed by a local greenhouse operator who began growing the product in May. Koch Greenhouses owner Bruce Bakker came to Township council Monday (Dec. 9) to complain the ban was drafted without consulting farmers. He said the BC Agriculture council, which represents farmers, has told him they were not consulted. Bakker called the attempt to restrict medicinal marijuana cultivation to industrial areas “troubling.” “What’s next?” Bakker said. “Are you going go after the wine industry which produces alcohol?” He said the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC), the provincial agency that regulates farmland, has issued an information bulletin on marijuana production that Continued Page 3

Mormons object to housing project CHURCH CONCERNED DEVELOPMENT WILL CREATE PARKING LOT HEADACHES

In a 2010 Times photo, church elder Paul Christensen stands in front of the Langley Mormon temple. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints came to Langley Township Council’s Dec. 9 meeting to voice their objection to a proposed highdensity residential development near the temple. Their fear is that the building’s parking lot could be used as overflow parking for the new homes, creating conflict between the church and its neighbours.

DAN FER GUSON Tim es Reporter

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints are objecting to a proposal to build higher-density housing next to the Mormon temple at the corner of 82 Avenue and 204 Street, saying it will create parking headaches. Qualico wants to build 244 housing units in the area, roughly half of them single-family homes and the rest a mix of townhouses, row houses and duplexes. At a Monday (Dec. 9) Township public hearing on the proposal, church elder Paul Christensen said locating the higher density housing nearest the temple, as called for in the current design, could lead to problems with people using the temple parking lot. “We do not have sufficient parking to provide community parking,” Christensen said, adding the temple would prefer not to be in the position of towing trespassing vehicles. “It’s a church,” Christensen said. “We like to be good Christian people.” Another church representative, Ron Komm, said single family homes would be preferable near the 28,165 squarefoot temple he called a “crown jewel.”

Lan g l ey Ti m e s file photo

A Qualico representative told council the mix of multiple and single family housing units meets the requirements of the Township community plan for the area, and the higher-density housing is planned to go nearest the temple because it happens to face onto a major thoroughfare. Council was expected to make a final decision on the project at an upcoming meeting. The Langley temple, dedicated in May, 2010, was at the time the seventh built in Canada and 131st in the world by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. It serves 22,000 Mormons from 91 congregations throughout B.C. and northern Washington. The temple, which is not open to non-members, is reserved for the sacraments of the Mormon church such as baptism and marriage. Mormons have been in B.C. since 1875, but until the Langley temple was built, they had to travel to Seattle or Calgary for temple services and sacraments. Details of the Langley temple construction can be viewed on Facebook at “Vancouver LDS Temple.” — with files from Andrew Bucholtz

says the crop is “consistent with the definition of farm use … and as such is an allowed use.” Bakker was speaking at an evening public hearing on the bylaw, which aims to restrict medicinal marijuana cultivation to industrial areas. He called on council to delay approval until there has been “meaningful consultation” with the BC Agriculture Council which represents farmers, provincial ministry of agriculture staff and other medicinal marijuana pro-

ducers. He said he has been operating his greenhouse in the 3300 block of 240 Street for 30 years, mostly producing “indoor ornamental plants” until this May, when he began growing four varieties of medicinal marijuana. He plans to provide product under new federal laws taking effect in 2014 that will see large-scale medicinal growing facilities replacing the many smaller licensed pot operations across Canada. His company has invested about $250,000 on marijuana cultivation so far, Bakker said.

Township council is hoping to pass the bylaw limiting legal marijuana production to industrial areas before the new federal laws take effect. Any Township ban would still have to be approved by the provincial government, which has the final say over the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) which covers 75 per cent of the Township’s 316 square kilometres. Council was advised in March that the ALC has declared that medical marijuana growing on agricultural land was protected under farming regulations that

override the the Township of Langley’s authority. The ALC was responding to a question from the Vancouver law firm of Bull, Housser and Tupper, which was hired by the Township to review proposed new federal restrictions on medical pot growing. The legal firm also warned the Township’s ability to regulate medical marijuana growing in the remaining 25 per cent of the community not in the ALR is also limited because federal law takes precedence over municipal regulations.

A Langley man known for his work with Rotary and rhododendrons has been named the 2013 HD Stafford Good Citizen of the Year. Les Clay was awarded the prestigious title at the Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce annual Christmas evening, held at Cascades Convention Centre on Tuesday night. Past Citizens of the Year, Sylvia Anderson (1994), Dale Ball (2002) and Jim McGregor (2006) were on stage to pass the honour to Clay. “All I have to say is, come to the garden in spring. We have planted 2,500 daffodils so you will see a good display at the arboretum, said Clay as he accepted the award. Clay was referring to the Derek Doubleday Memorial Arboretum, which he was instrumental in helping create. In 2008, Clay shared his vision to establish a botanical garden for the community to enjoy. Thanks to his vision and relentless work, he created the “Arboretum and Botanical Society of Langley and then the arboretum and botanical garden

Dialysis patient loses his ride LANGLEY MAN TRAVELLING TO SURREY THREE TIMES A WEEK FOR TREATMENT

DA N F ERGUSO N Tim e s Re po r t e r

For over a month, Langley resident Pat Wiesner has been getting up early in the morning to drive her husband Garry to his three-times-a-week dialysis appointments in Surrey. That means finding someone to look after her 92-year-old mother, who lives with the couple and cannot be left by herself. Pat says she may have to post-

pone her planned knee replacement surgery if something isn’t worked out soon. The couple told The Times that HandyDart stopped taking Garry to his appointments after a Fraser Health social worker asked him if he was capable of driving himself. “I said, ‘sometimes,’” Garry said. “She [the social worker] took that to mean all the time.”

The 66-year-old former trucker, who is also insulin-dependent, says he tried to explain that he can’t predict from one day to the next if he will be up to driving himself. “I don’t know what I’m going to feel like until I get up in the morning,” he said. When the Wiesners learned the rides would be discontinued, they protested. They said they’ve been told that there are no available HandyDart rides from Langley to the dialysis facility on the days Garry usually goes. They’ve been told Garry could get a ride on other days or other times of day, but they say changing his schedule like

that will mean losing a male care worker he’s had assisting him at home for five years. “It’s just a nightmare,” Pat said. “It’s like the house is caving in on us.” While they try to work things out with Fraser Heath, they have had to shoulder the expense of the frequent drives to and from Surrey. Garry is a pensioner and Pat is on disability. “It’s not like we’re rolling in the dough here,” she said. At press time Wednesday, following a query by The Times, Fraser Health was looking into the the Wiesner case. A recently released union-funded study claims the number of

HandyDart users denied trips over the past five years has increased sevenfold. The report by transportation planner Eric Doherty said the number of HandyDart trip denials skyrocketed from 5,000 in 2008 to 37,690 last year. Doherty’s report was prepared for the Amalgamated Transit Union that represents HandyDart drivers. The union is unhappy with TransLink’s decision this year to use less costly taxis to provide trips, a shift of 15,000 service hours that has meant layoffs for a few HandyDart drivers and a loss of full-time status for others. — with files from Jeff Nagel/Black Press

Question langeytimes.com

The tragic deaths of two women in two separate house fires in as many weeks in Langley, once again underscores the need to exercise extreme caution during the ongoing cold snap — and all winter long. Although no definite cause has been determined in either case, in the first fire, which happened in a four-plex on Old Yale Road on Nov. 28, appears to been started by either a space heater or a power bar failure. In the second instance, firefighters said that while they don’t know whether the home had a working smoke detector, they did not hear an alarm going off in the house when they arrived. But in both cases, someone lost their life, and this holiday season is going to be a tremendously difficult one for the people they left behind. Of course, tragedy can never be completely avoided and we may never know whether these women’s deaths could have been prevented, but there are steps we can and should all take to minimize the risk of yet another fatality or serious injury. Whether it’s space heaters, fireplaces or candles, sources of heat are also potential sources of danger if they’re not handled with the level of care and respect they’re due. Fireplaces — whether gas or wood-burning — require regular, professional maintenance to ensure they are in proper and safe working order. Space heaters, meanwhile, should only be plugged directly into a wall outlet, never into a power bar. There should also be a minimum three feet of space between the heater and any combustible materials. Every home should, of course, have at the very minimum at least one working smoke detector — ideally, one in every area of the house where people sleep — with fresh batteries installed each autumn. And burning candles — which many people love to place throughout their homes at Christmastime — should never be left unattended. This is simple advice and we hear it all the time, but in the wake of such tragedy, perhaps it bears repeating.

Do you think distracted driving is a bigger problem during the holiday season than at other times of the year?

Trains of thought they

We’re told there are two sides to every story. Hardly. For anybody paying attention to the polygonous rail saga on the Semiahmoo Peninsula, there are as many sides to the issue as there have been trains winding their way along the waterfront since the Great Northern Railway opened the route in 1909. Even before White Rock Mayor Wayne Baldwin announced last month that he and Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts have been discussing moving the tracks inland since summer, residents have been making their voices heard on all things train related. Apart from safety, noise and health concerns related to rail traffic, we have also heard much about notions quite contrary to moving the tracks. Our neighbours to the south, for example, must be a little confused about Canadians’ attitude to the BNSF line — particularly since the last thing they heard was a community gung-ho to have passenger trains once again stop in White Rock. It would seem that the years-in-the-future dream of relocating the line is serving as a distraction from more pressing issues concerning rail traffic through our community. We should not lose focus on the need for basic rail safety, and protection from the shipping of dangerous goods, and those, like coal, that pose a subtler but no-less-real health and environmental threat. The historic reason we have rails on our waterfront is that more than a century ago, a multimillionaire with dreams of making White Rock a major international port city wanted it so. We must continue to add our voice to those across our nation who are calling for stronger safeguards on existing rail traffic, rather than letting these calls be diffused by the smoke and mirrors. – Peace Arch News

Guidelines meant to control, not stop, development Editor: It was a sad day for the future of Fort Langley when the judge set aside the heritage alteration permit to allow the Coulter Berry building to be built. What of the future? The heritage guidelines were put in place to control development, not stop it. They were also put in place while the decaying Interfor mill occupied the north side of the tracks. New zoning was put in place to allow residential use and even then, after only three or four years, council issued a variance to the new zoning there to allow an extra storey on some buildings. The world is still turning and there was no commercial interest in stopping it as it meant more potential customers.

There is now a significant population on that property and they need services. The Coulter Berry building meets the façade requirements and is the most sustainable type of construction that is currently available, what more can one ask? While the Fort Langley Citizens for Sustainable Development are passionate in their belief, they are turning the town into a no-development zone. First, if the Coulter Berry developer chooses to continue (I don’t think I would after all the alterations to accommodate the public input I’d already made) it will delay the project by months if not years. That means additional costs that make the project even less viable. Why would any other developer even

consider working here when Surrey is in boom mode and the investment is much stronger there? Second, if the developer chooses to cut his losses and walk away, the property has been devalued to the point of needing to hold it until the local population changes enough to do something without major campaigns and court battles. We now have a hole in the middle of town that will not enhance any new traffic and the traffic will eventually reduce to the point of hurting the viability of other businesses in town (remember the drought of no grocery store that we are just getting over?). Third, what kind of developers will the town now draw? If everything is going to be

Lost gifts too costly to replace Editor: Whoever found a bag left on the bus bench at 196 Street and Fraser Highway containing Body Shop items, please turn it in. I am on disability raising my 14-year-old granddaughter. We don’t have much money, so today we thought we would take advantage of the Body Shop sale which is buy three, get three free, we spent $45 so the items in the bag were worth $90. When we were getting on the bus across from White Spot my granddaughter forgot the bag, but we didn’t notice it until we exited the bus on 203 Street and Fraser Highway. We took the next bus back, but the bag was gone. I called transit as soon as we got home, but the most they can do is put in a report and if anyone turns the bag in, they will call us. My granddaughter bought some items for her great

grandmother and her grandmother for Christmas. Her grandmother has been fighting cancer for a few years and has just received her last chemo treatment and was diagnosed as terminal. It’s hard to buy grandmothers things they can use, but especially hard when they know their grandma won’t be here next Christmas and we can’t afford replacement gifts. If whoever found these items needs them as much as we do, then keep them. I hope it makes your life a little easier. But if you realize how much it would mean to have them back, then please drop them off with a driver or contact transit and we can pick them up at your convenience. S. Papineau Langley

Return Xmas tree to roundabout Editor: The following letter was sent to the mayor and council of the Township: Recently the Township chopped down the Christmas tree in the roundabout at 216 Street and 48 Avenue (Five Corners). We were involved in the planting of that tree when the roundabout was constructed. We paid for the tree and planted the tree at that time. Township engineering staff ap-

proved the tree, the planting of it and were present at the time it was planted. Why, five years later, would they chop it down? This tree was healthy and growing very nicely. Overall, it improved the safety of the intersection by reducing headlight glare, which is a problem. Roundabouts generally have a raised centre for that reason. The action of the Township in this

case was completely unjustified for any reason. The tree brought pleasure and happiness to all that passed the intersection. It was a native species of evergreen and was perfect as both a Christmas tree and as part of the natural landscape. Everyone enjoyed the tree. Please put it back. Sharon and Wally Martin Five Corners

a tough challenge here, the values drop as the costs are undeterminable in advance. There seems to be a opinion that the town can have democratic input on design and have been allowed more than normal in this case. A hard-fought-for ‘no’ means high risk to anyone else. Why take it? Why not move on? Therefore, I see the Fort Langley Citizens for Sustainable Development have effectively stopped development. If they wanted Barkerville, it looks like they will get it sooner than they thought. Brian Holmes Fort Langley

Incinerator an environmental monstrosity Editor: Which city will Metro Vancouver choose to build its toxic emission-spewing garbage incinerator? Will it also create more than 100,000 tonnes per year of toxic and hazardous ashes requiring geo-membrane lined land fill sites? If they build outside of the Metro area, will that city have to pay the ‘put or pay’ penalty if the waste won’t burn? Also, will that city be responsible for landfilling the ashes? Sweden is touted as the shining example of incineration and recycling, but there is a hidden truth. Because of recycling they don’t have enough combustible garbage and have to import garbage from across Europe. They also have a policy of not allowing the hazardous/toxic ashes to be landfilled so they are sent to neighbouring Norway and mixed into concrete to fill old mine shafts. How long before this toxic concrete cocktail breaks down and pollutes Norway’s groundwater and fjords? When you put our provincial government’s irresponsible fracking policy into the equation the whole province could eventually become a toxic wasteland. If you live, or know of someone who does live in one of these ‘chosen cities,’ help make sure that this environmental monstrosity and all of the ensuing problems it will bring, never gets built. A new poll has found more B.C. residents support a return to photo radar than endorse higher speed limits on the province’s highways. The Insights West poll conducted for Black Press found 37 per cent back higher highway speed limits, while 55 per cent said they should be kept the same and five per cent would lower them. Meanwhile, 39 per cent support bringing back photo radar to help curb speeding, while 53 per cent were opposed. The camera-equipped roadside vans automatically detected speeders and issued tickets by mail in the 1990s and were eliminated in 2001 by the incoming BC Liberal government. The findings split sharply on gender lines, with women and older drivers much more likely to oppose higher speed limits and support photo radar speed enforcement. Just 25 per cent of women said highway speed limits should be raised (65 per cent said they should stay the same), while 50 per cent of men were in favour of higher limits. Among respondents aged 55 and up, 31 per cent supported higher limits, while twice as many — 62 per cent — said they

shouldn’t change. A third of men supported bringing back photo radar, while that jumped to 43 per cent among women and 48 per cent among those 55 and over — more than the 46 per cent in that age group who oppose its return. Insights West vice-president Mario Canseco said the support for photo radar may be less about bringing back what many considered an unfair cash grab and more a reflection of frustration that other drivers break the law without being punished. He said the results on speed limit reform show significant support for change, but added the gender gap was a surprise. “Half of men driving out there say we’re just going too slow, we should be going a little bit faster. “But they’re only supported by one in four women.” Canseco said it appears those in favour of higher speed limits have so far been “a little bit louder” in rallying support than those worried about change. But he suggested a measured, careful approach by the government to lift limits on selected routes may win yet majority support. Transportation Minister Todd Stone kicked off a public review

of B.C. rural highway speed limits last Friday with a series of eight regional public forums running to Jan. 24. For details of the Rural Highway Safety and Speed Review or to register your comment, see http://engage.gov.bc.ca/ safetyandspeedreview. Stone has indicated the government may be prepared to raise speed limits on some rural highways, which are now mostly posted at 100 kilometres per hour, except for the 110 limit on the Coquihalla and parts of the Okanagan Connector. Stone said research has shown the biggest danger are vehicles that are driving much faster or slower than the prevailing speed on the route. “It’s not speed in and of itself which kills. It’s variations in speed,” he said. Improved roads and vehicle safety are among the reasons he cites for potentially higher limits. The review is also examining issues like the dangers of wildlife collisions, snow tire regulations and slower moving vehicles that don’t keep pace with traffic or clog passing lanes. The government has repeatedly said it has no plans to reintroduce photo radar and Stone said the review won’t consider enforcement changes.

A community campaign for a crosswalk at Aldergrove Secondary School’s 29 Avenue entrance has paid off. The crosswalk and redesign of the high school parking lot will be built this summer, as a result of a partnership between the Township of Langley and Langley School District. It will be the only marked crosswalk on 29 Avenue between 264 and 272 Streets and will be used by students from both the high school and the adjacent Betty Gilbert Middle School. Councillor Charlie Fox says this aspect of the project is a done-deal, however, the issue of whether traffic calming measures would be undertaken at the crosswalk requires approval of 67 per cent of neighbouring residents. Ballots and letters informing residents of this option have gone out to 900 homes in the area within one kilometre of the high school. The deadline for responses is Dec. 13, and if approved by two-thirds or more of respondents an open house would be held in the New Year to present the traffic calming design concepts to the public. The options include speed bumps and curb bulges (to prevent motorists from passing stopped cars on the inside lane)

POLL WILL NOT ASK RESIDENTS IF THEY VOTED IN MUNICIPAL ELECTION DA N F ERGUSO N Tim e s Re po r t e r

A planned Township poll of residents has been revised to eliminate a question about voting habits after several members of council objected. The “Engagement Survey” proposed by the Township Community Participation, Infrastructure and Environment advisory committee would have asked residents to rate their involvement in a number of community activities ranging from attending council meetings to using the municipal website and voting in a municipal election. But when the survey came to council for approval, several members said asking people about their voting habits was going too far. “I don’t know what the benefit [of the voting question] is,” said councillor Grant Ward. “It’s prying into citiGR A NT zens’ lives. If we want WA RD to encourage citizens to vote, this is not the best way to do it.” Councillor Michelle Sparrow, the co-chair of the committee, said she opposed the question at the Nov. 7 meeting that approved the questionnaire. “It does not seem like a relevant question to me,” Sparrow said. “It makes it a little political.” Councillor Kim Richter called the question “offensive.” Councillor Bob Long noted that the question didn’t ask people to reveal who they voted for, only if they voted. “What’s the harm in it?” Long asked. Council voted seven to two to delete the question from the survey.

Christmas in Williams Park will go on, despite theft and damage MO N I Q U E TA M M I N G A Ti m e s Re po r t e r

For the first time in 23 years, the Christmas in Williams Park Society has had to hire security to watch over the festive light display, after Grinches tried to ruin this year’s show. The day after Williams Park opened for visitors to drive through and see the magical display of lights and inflatables on Dec. 3, thieves snuck into the park after the gate was closed and stole several inflatables. They also cut wires and smashed some lights. “It’s very demoralizing,” said Jim Marvel, Township parks and facilities manager who also is with the Williams Park Society. “We were able to replace the inflatables but it cost the society extra money.” This is the second time, thieves have tried to ruin Christmas this year. In February, thieves broke into a storage locker and stole massive number of lights and extension cords. “It’s tough to recover from this,” said Marvel. The society made the expensive decision to hire security guards for all the nights the park is open for Christmas. Christmas in Williams Park will go on. “This is a key Christmas event

Subm itted im age

The theft of a number of decorations and destruction of others will not prevent Christmas in Williams Park from going ahead as planned on Dec. 13 and 14. In addition to other attractions and activities, visitors are invited to enjoy a horse and carriage ride through the park. in Langley for many people and it’s free,” said Marvel. However, they do have donation bins at the park where people can donate if they feel they can. This year, the society could use the extra help. “It has put a strain on us for sure,” he said.

This Friday and Saturday is the Christmas in Williams Park walking festival where people are welcome to walk through the park from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., meet Santa and Mrs. Claus, have pony and horse and carriage rides and enjoy live entertainment as well as hot chocolate and hotdogs.

NEW HOME DEVELOPMENT

RenoMe! with FortisBC contest names grand prize winner By Kerry Vital

One Vancouver Island homeowner has a lot to celebrate this holiday season after winning the RenoMe! with FortisBC contest. Melissa Tolsma of Nanaimo won the $10,000 prize for her outdoor space, which she can now put towards the renovation.

“I was leafing through the local paper one day and the ‘RenoMe! with FortisBC’ ad seemed to jump out at me off the page,” Tolsma says. “I couldn’t ignore it. I’m not usually a contest enterer, but I just had this weird feeling ‘you can win this contest’.” Over 7,000 votes were cast, and Tolsma is very excited.

“I’ve never won anything, really, so this kind of win is unbelievable!” she says. “I don’t think it will really sink in until I see my backyard at the end of the reno process.” Currently her backyard is only usable in the summer months, so Tolsma is hoping to be able to use her space year-round after the renovation. She and her daughter enjoy spending time outdoors, so the yard was the first place she thought of when she heard about the RenoMe! with FortisBC contest. “We plan to do lots of outdoor living year-round!” she says. “I’m envisioning plenty of weenie roasts and toe warming on those chilly spring and fall evenings when we

would normally have to retreat indoors.” As part of the contest, Tolsma received a rendering of what her space could look like from Sarah Gallop of Sarah Gallop Design Inc. Gallop included a hot tub heated by natural gas and an outdoor natural gas fire pit in her design, as well as space for entertaining outside. The design also features several levels to define the different spaces in the yard. “The space looked disconnected before,” Gallop says. “This gives (Tolsma) different zones in the yard while still being connected.” Gallop notes that many clients are now asking for natural gas

Sarah Gallop rendering

Sarah Gallop of Sarah Gallop Design Inc. envisioned an outdoor space with a natural gas hot tub, natural gas barbecue and natural gas firepit for Melissa Tolsma of Nanaimo. Tolsma was recently named the grand prize winner of the RenoMe! with FortisBC contest.

appliances in their homes; a trend that she believes will continue. “Natural gas brings warmth,” she says. “It obviously brings physical warmth but also a warm ambiance.” Among the things Tolsma will receive as part of her prize is a gift card from Coast Wholesale Appliances. One person who voted in the RenoMe! with FortisBC contest will win a $500 gift card of their own. A natural gas barbecue is one of the most popular appliances for a backyard. FortisBC notes that a natural gas barbecue can be extremely convenient for homeowners looking for fuel on demand, as you’ll never have to deal with running out of propane or charcoal. It also allows you to cook with different temperatures at the same time and control the heat more easily. Tolsma also plans to install a fire pit powered by natural gas. “I can’t wait to have the fire pit installed,” she says. “I see it as the focal point of the outdoor living space that Sarah Gallop has designed. Our house is under 1,000 square feet, so extending the living space outside is going to be awesome.” “It’s kind of like camping in your own backyard,” says Gallop. “You get the informality of outdoor space with the convenience of natural gas.” And convenient it is. Natural gas is available at the push of a button, so you no longer need to wait for your fireplace or cooktop to heat up or worry about running out of propane for your outdoor barbecue. Tolsma is also planning to purchase a new patio set as well as some new greenery to accent what she already has. The second and third place finalists, Gayle Curtis of Maple Ridge and Wendy Frose of Chilliwack, will each receive $2,000 towards their own renovations, for their kitchen and living area respectively. For more information about natural gas in your home, visit www.fortisbc.com/goodforhomes.

He played both sports since he was a child, beginning hockey at age five with the Langley Minor Hockey Association, and then joining the Langley Minor Lacrosse Association when he was six. Brendan Rouse gave up lacrosse in favour of hockey five years ago, but is now back playing lacrosse. He is one of three Langley players trying to crack the final roster of the National Lacrosse League’s Vancouver Stealth, who play out of the Langley Events Centre. The games have several similarities, including that both are five-on-five. “It is just that one is on foot and one is on skates,” he said. “But they both help with your hand-eye coordination.” He had watched a few games in his hiatus from the sport. “I hadn’t really picked up my stick at all in those three years off,” he admitted. “I kind of lost my stick skills but my defensive game was still there from hockey.” Rouse played this past season in the B.C. Junior Lacrosse Association, registering seven points in 18 games for the Salmonbellies. And he showed well enough that the

Vancouver Stealth selected him in the fifth round of the National Lacrosse League entry draft in September. “He is an intelligent player, we saw that right away,” Perreault said. In hockey, Rouse was a two-way forward and he plays a similar role in lacrosse as a defensive transition player, helping the team get the ball out of their own end and setting up the attack for the team’s offensive players. At the time of the draft, Rouse was surprised to be selected, but Stealth head coach Chris Hall said they liked what they saw.

Rouse has been among the 30plus players battling it out at the Stealth’s training camp. Each team must be down to 20 players — and an additional four on their practice roster — by Dec. 16. Rouse is one of three Langley players at training camp, alongside Brett Dobray and Sean Lundstrom. Those two played junior with the Langley Thunder and Dobray was a third round pick while Lundstrom was invited to camp as a free agent. Lundstrom had 29 goals and 67 points in 19 games last season

Hawley Bennett-Awad is one of six riders named to the short list for the 2014 Canadian national eventing team. The Langley rider — who lives and trains horses in California — was named to the short list for a fifth straight year, along with her horse, Gin N Juice. and Dobray had 46 goals and 94 points in 21 games. “That is my goal, first and foremost,” Rouse said about making the team. “I don’t want to look past that. I want to get better and more comfortable and earn a roster spot.” He also plans to play in the summer with the Western Lacrosse Association, which holds its junior player draft in February. Rouse, who turns 22 in January, also plans to study to be an electrician at BCIT.

CCI/CCIO/CH three star and four star competitions between Jan. 1 and Nov. 4, 2013. Bennett-Awad’s top two performances came in Kentucky in April and France in November. The 36-year-old has previously represented Canada on the international stage, including at the 2004 and 2012 Summer Olympic Games. She also helped Canada win silver at the 2011 Pan American Games.

Kent eyes KPU jump to CIS

RIC K KU P C H U K Bl ack pre s s

There is a new face at the forefront of Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) athletics, and he is taking the program in a new direction. David Kent assumed the role last week as the university’s new director of athletics and recreation, and will lead a department of six varsity teams. All six currently compete in the Pacific Western Athletic Conference (PACWEST), but could soon be competing against major universities from across Western Canada as members of the CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport). “The light at the end of the tunnel is the CIS,” said Kent, a Langley resident who brings more than two decades of experience in post-secondary sports to KPU. “The CIS is the highest level of amateur sports in Canada.” Moving up to the CIS level is what Kent suggested to administrators at Kwantlen, and was a

big reason he decided to pursue the job. “Moving to the CIS was part of my proposal, a two-hour presentation I made during my interview,” he said. “I can’t see why we couldn’t be in the CIS eventually. We’d be a brilliant bridge between UVic and UBC (to the west) and Fraser Valley and Trinity Western (to the east).” While some regard the University of British Columbia (UBC) as the ultimate CIS model, with UBC Thunderbirds competing in basketball, soccer, track and field, men’s and women’s hockey as well as football, Kent isn’t suggesting KPU should have the same kind of profile. Like smaller CIS schools such as the University of Northern B.C. (UNBC), Trinity Western University and the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV), Kwantlen could field teams in just soccer and basketball, and be successful in Canada West, one of four

regional leagues under the CIS umbrella. “Basketball and soccer are the core sports played everywhere,” noted Kent. “And the soccer facility (at Newton Athletic Park) is already up to standard, it would be approved by the CIS in two minutes.” The Eagles already have soccer and basketball, with men’s and women’s teams in both sports playing in the PacWest league. Kent has plenty of experience working in athletics at the university level, having been employed at Concordia University, Carleton University and, most recently, the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) Cascades, where he focused primarily on promoting student-athletes. He has spent 23 years in coaching, management and communications in post-secondary sports. While he has a couple of things to tend to, Kent will spend most of the next few months meeting people and learning more about the university, its athletic department and his staff.

Valley West Hawks’ Matt Bradley breaks in on Cariboo Cougars’ goaltender Jeremy Matte during a 1-1 tie at the Langley Sportsplex in B.C. Major Midget Hockey League action on Sunday morning. The Hawks took three of four points off the Cougars, winning 5-3 on the Saturday night as well.

Hawks take three of four points The Valley West Hawks took three of a possible four points from the Cariboo Cougars last weekend at the Langley Sportsplex. The BC Hockey Major Midget League team upended the Cougars 5-3 Saturday afternoon, then came from behind for a 1-1 tie on Sunday morning. Sunday’s tie was the first of the season for the Hawks, who are in third place in the 11-team provincial league with a 15-6-1 record. Saturday’s game was tied 1-1

after 20 minutes, with Eric Callegari scoring for the home side. The teams exchanged goals again in the second frame, with Jordan Funk netting the Hawks goal. The Cougars went up 3-2 with eight minutes remaining in the game, but Valley West responded the three unanswered goals in the final seven minutes of play. Matt Bradley tied the game, then Paul Savage added the winning tally with two minutes to go. Savage scored again a minute later into the empty net.

Bradley added a pair of assists to his goal for a three-point game. Cariboo led to most of Sunday’s game, taking the lead 11 minutes into the game and maintaining the 1-0 lead for 34 minutes. A goal from Ty Westgard with five minutes to play allowed the Hawks to earn the tie. Now six points back of the firstplace Okanagan Rockets (18-3-1), the Hawks will visit the Rockets next weekend for a two-game series Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning.

Top ten winter road trip tips: 1. A full night’s sleep ahead of a long drive is important. 2. It’s also a good idea to let a friend know when you’re leaving and the time you expect to arrive. 3. Fill the windshield washer bottle with seasonal cleaner and carry an extra container in the trunk. 4. Don’t forget to bring sunglasses – glare from snow can be hard on the eyes. 5. Wear (warm) clothes that allow good movement to steer and operate the foot pedals. 6. Bring water plus non-perishable food supplies on longer trips. 7. An emergency (first aid) kit. 8. Check the weather forecast, road conditions and for road closures on your route before heading out on a long trip. 9. Good winter tires are mandatory on most high-elevation BC highway routes during the winter. 10. If you must drive in bad weather, it’s a good idea to refuel when the tank drops below half full. If the car breaks down or gets stuck in the snow, having engine heat until help arrives could be important. Useful winter driving web sites: drivebc.ca, icbc.com

Drives-U-Crazy Roof of snow Watched a guy labour for 20 minutes the other day scraping the ice from his windshield, side and rear windows. Then he jumped in his car and took off without paying any attention to the snow on the car roof. I figured that ten minutes into his journey the snow would slide down onto his windshield, obscuring his vision and thus putting him at risk of collision with some other innocent road user. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. What drives-u-crazy. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

5 year/ 100,000 km powertrain 5 year/ 100,000 km roadside assistance Roadworthy: My tester was the Sorento LX. I found the vehicle to handle very nicely around town. The multi-link rear suspension kept the vehicle from rolling side to side in higher speed cornering and gave the overall ride a comfortable feeling. The electric power steering really helped in tight maneuvering. Power was impressive and for a smaller lighter vehicle, the motor

was well matched. Fuel economy numbers were good and, if driven sensibly, I am sure you could stretch these numbers to be even better. I was very surprised to see this many features offered as their standard package, great value for your money. Most of the time, the automotive world doesn’t serve up a “Godfather II,” the rare sequel that is the equal or better of the original. Sometimes, you get “Godfather III.” Here are cars that today are regarded as classics in their own right, but initially had a hard time living up to the legacy of their predecessors: 1. 1958 Thunderbird: The Rob Sass original two-seater 195557 Thunderbirds — or “Baby Birds” — were recognized as classics almost as soon as they went out of production. They were replaced by a larger four-seater that came to be known as “The Square Bird.” While the Square Bird was an immensely popular car that handily outsold its predecessor, the original two-seater remains the one that most people think of when the topic of T-Birds comes up. 2. 1979 Datsun 280ZX: The 280ZX had the misfortune of following one of the all-time greatest classic sports cars, the Datsun 240/260/280Z. And it also committed the cardinal sin in the eyes of sports car enthusiasts (although not necessarily in the eyes of the buying public) of being heavier and more luxurious. It was derided by the magazines of the time as being a flashy “discomobile,” and collectors are only now starting to realize the merits of the comfy and more grownup ZX. 3. 1971 Oldsmobile Toronado: The first generation Toronado that appeared in

1966 was a stylistic and engineering tour de force. Reminiscent of the great classic Cord 810 of 1936, it was a milestone car for GM. Hardly anyone remembers its successor, the second generation Toronado. Where the ’66 broke the mold, the ’71 was the mold for generic American luxury cars of the 1970s. 4. 1976 Jaguar XJS: This one had the extreme misfortune of replacing one of the most beautiful cars of all time, the Jaguar E-Type. So naturally, people were predisposed to hate it when it came out. Other than initial quality control issues, which have become legendary, the XJS was neither a bad nor ugly car — quite the contrary. But for Jaguar, lightning just couldn’t strike twice: There was simply no way that the XJS could be as lovely as the E-Type. 5. 1974 Ford Mustang II: The early 1970s were dark times for the automobile. The Arab Oil Embargo of 1973 put the brakes on large displacement high performance engines. What was Ford to do about cars like the Mustang, whose reputation was built on V-8 performance? Replace it with a four-cylinder version based on the Pinto, of course. Although V-6s and V-8s were offered, it was the sting of the anemic four-banger that stuck with the II until Ford replaced it in 1979 with what would become the very good and very popular Fox body Mustang.
