Food bank volunteers are ready to help out By Treena Mielke Christmas is fast approaching and while many people are enjoying the festive season in grand style, there are some out there who are less fortunate. And, sadly, even as some people enjoy a holiday table laden with delicious food, some people are struggling to make ends meet and being able to enjoy a turkey dinner with all the trimmings is not an option. That is where the Rimbey Food Bank comes in.
Due to generous and caring volunteers Christmas hampers will be made up for those in need and given out a few days before Christmas. Each hamper contains enough for a delicious Christmas dinner as well as some extra items to help make life a little easier during the dark, cold days of December. Hampers also contain toys and gifts for the family. Christine Simpson, office manager at FCSS said food and cash donations are coming in and she ex-

which is appreciated. The food bank is a valuable asset to the community, she said. “Anyone can find themselves in a situation where they may need to access the food bank. They could be laid off or have a serious illness or suffer from some other set back. It can happen to anyone.” Simpson noted all food bank recipients are screened. The Rimbey Food Bank is located in the basement of the Nazarene Church. For more information contact 403843-2030.
Mary Busch and Joan Carrigan, long-time Rimbey volunteers helped out at the food bank last week. With Christmas fast approaching, volunteers are busy preparing hampers for those less fortunate families.

pects donations of toys will pick up during the next few days. “We are happy to accept cash and food donations and anyone who want to help out is more than welcome to phone the office to find out the schedules of the work bees,” she said. Simpson noted school students have helped out at the food bank by carrying boxes and unpacking food. She said many regular volunteers are getting older and having the youth step up to the plate and lend a helping hand is wonderful. Local businesses have also sent staff to help out during December

Rimbey RCMP respond to MVA on Hwy. 20 Chevy Blazer stolen On December 1st, a 2000 Chevrolet Blazer, blue in colour, was stolen from Rimbey. The vehicle has yet to be recovered. Father and son jailed Your local detachment continues to crack down on impaired driving offences in the community in an effort to make our roads safer. Several more local and out-of-towners were arrested and charged with drunk driving. In one case, on December 12, a 56-year-old male, a resident of Rimbey, and his 32-year-old son were stopped by police at the midnight hour. Both men had been drinking. The father was arrested for impaired driving at the scene. The son, who was on Court Orders to not consume any alcohol, jumped out of the vehicle and ran away from the officer. The officer knew who he was, so the “apple that didn’t fall far from the tree” was hunted down within the hour and joined his dad in jail. ‘Check in’ requirements not met Police arrested more wanted people in an effort to track down people in the community evading the law. Police also have a requirement for some individuals to “check-in” at the detachment who have been released from jail on bail awaiting upcoming court dates. In one case, a man who is not allowed to consume any alcohol whatsoever, attended the detachment to report in and smelled of liquor. He was arrested and now gets three hots and a cot at the Queen’s Motel. Mounties seize highpowered rifle A local 19-year-old man was charged when he was stopped at a check stop and found to have a loaded high powered rifle in his possession and was

OPINION
Best gifts can’t be bought The best gifts can’t be bought Here we are, smack dab in the middle of the holiday season. For some of us lucky individuals it is pretty easy to be all jolly and happy. For us, the joy of the season comes naturally, like a gift we are Treena Mielke pretty sure we are goOn The Other Side ing to receive, even if we have been known to be on the wrong side of Santa’s list at least once or twice. For those of us who are so lucky, Christmas is one big unwrapped present that brings lots of good and delightful joys from start to finish. It is, of course, important to remember what is good and delightful and not go to some mall hoping you will find it on the shelf. You can’t! I set out with great confidence the other day to finish my Christmas shopping. Of course, it didn’t work. I got stuck in the first store I went into which was a store where there was supposed to be five million things that would be suitable for young girls. I happen to have two granddaughters who fall into that category, so that is where I took myself, my hopes and a good portion of my last paycheck! It turned out there were five million things or more there for young girls. That was, of course, the problem. Which of these five million things would they like? Would they like a hair band with a bow on top for their hair or would that be too uncool? Would they like a diary or a book that says “this book is awesome” or are those dumb gifts that only a grandma would buy? Would they like a pretty scarf? And what is pretty, anyway? Should the scarf be fluffy with ruffles or simple and sleek so they could wind it around their neck and toss their hair, and have other girls look at them in envy, not just because of the scarf, but because they had such a cool grandma.
That would be me, of course! I wondered around the store, picking up this, holding up that and feeling more and more confused. I began thinking about how nice a glass of wine would be at that moment and immediately felt guilty because it was, after all, only two in the afternoon. I looked around to see if any of the other shoppers could read my thoughts. I don’t think they could, but just in case, I slunk out of the store, head down. “Onwards,” I told myself. “Shopping is fun,” I muttered, but even I didn’t believe myself. I arrived home, tired and discouraged, dropping the bag containing the headband with a bow on top, a scarf somewhere between fluffy and sleek and a book that says, “this book is awesome” on the big chair in the living room to be wrapped later. I felt like a bad shopper, a complete and utter failure. And for my three grandsons, I still had nothing. Later, when my practical self kicked in, I realized that spending one second, even one iota of a second on worrying about buying the perfect gift was a total and utter waste of time.
The season of Christmas is such a short time, and, in this weary old world, there are many, many people who have so little reason to celebrate, to experience joy of any kind. For them, Christmas, with its lights and its message of hope and cheer and goodwill can seem not much more than mockery. Some of us are lucky enough to have been given the gift of the Christmas season wrapped up nicely with things we just can’t buy, but if we are very lucky, we get anyway. Health. Family. Friends. Laughter and hugs. Music. Snow! No!!! Not snow, what am I thinking? We have had far too much snow, already. But, it is true, the best gifts really cannot be bought, so shopping should take a back seat to what really is important, and, more often than not, what we already have. And so may each and everyone receive the gifts you don’t have to buy, if you aren’t lucky enough to have them already. And in the process may you have the best Christmas ever!
Food Bank provides wonderful service to community On Dec 11 the junior high students and I, from the West Country Outreach School, embarked on a venture to volunteer at the Rimbey Food Bank. Never have I volunteered at a food bank before so I was very curious and excited to see what the environment would be like including all the hard work that needed to be done. I will discuss the importance of food banks and what I feel about them and my own opinion on how they help to maintain balance in communities. Also I will share the pride, and sense of accomplishment that can come from doing a good deed such as volunteering. According to information on the internet, the Food Banks of Canada was founded in 1987. Today the organization assists nearly 900,000 Canadians each month of whom 339,000 are children. Food banks all over the world address the short-term need of food and the long-term solu-
Taylor Snell Work Experience
tions to reduce hunger. The importance of food banks is great. I feel very happy and positive just knowing the time sacrificed by the many volunteers is very worthwhile because that time is well spent and for a good cause. It’s beneficial not only to the families receiving the food but to the ones who donate and package it as well. Many organizations much like the food banks of Canada, help keep bal-
ance in communities. Some families need help this time of year, but don’t always have the proper aid or knowledge on where to go for help when in need. I, and I’m sure many others feel grateful, and remain hopeful for the years to come because of the service provided by food banks. No person deserves to be without food; it’s a basic life necessity. Unfortunately not everyone is able to have a full fridge or not so bare shelves. With the amazing support given by the Rimbey Food Bank, those people don’t have to go hungry this holiday season and can celebrate with some peace at mind. Leaving our school at 9 a.m. all bundled up, almost looking like little walking pillows was a small price my classmates, teacher Mrs. A, and I had to pay to get to the Nazarene Church in time to help with packaging all the food hampers. When we all arrived it was nothing like I imagined. There
were shelves upon shelves of caned goods and enough boxes of Kraft dinner to outweigh an elephant, or so it seemed. We all got the chance to make name tags, and were assigned to a partner. After everyone got the concept of finding food and putting it into the boxes, it went by like a breeze. Two hours went by and all the volunteers took a quick break, giving me the chance to ask some questions. The junior highs of WCORS all enjoyed taking part in helping, all found it educational and heart warming. I was so proud of every single one of them. It makes me happy to know that teens, besides myself love to create positive change in the community and bring joy to people and their families. All, with only a couple hours of volunteer work, a little elbow grease, and smiles on our faces we helped to reduce the number of hungry people. If we all work together we can make change happen.

“AMAZING SERVICE & EXTRA EFFORT” Matt Woolsey Rimbey, AB
First time buying a vehicle from a dealership and I must say you guys did a great job at making one feel pretty much at home. Not only was I on the road within a couple of days but I managed to do it all within a tight schedule. Their amazing service and extra effort in customer service just made the experience that much easier. Highly recommend Sylvan Truck Ranch to anyone looking to buy a pre-owned or new vehicle. Big thanks to Tyson, Michael and Meridel.

Privacy tips for online shopping • Research online merchants, looking at privacy and security policies and customer ratings prior to making a purchase. • Only enter personal information on secure websites. The website address will be preceded by “https” if secure and a closed padlock will appear beside it. • Reputable merchants usually send an email confirming your order. If you do not receive an email confirmation, follow up with the merchant immediately. • Use a low limit credit card for online purchases and one that provides you with specific guarantees, such as 100% coverage for any losses due to fraud when shopping online. • Make sure your computer security is upto-date to protect against spyware, adware, malware and other Internet attacks. • Create strong passwords, including numbers, symbols and upperand lower-case letters, and use a different username and password on each website you shop to limit risk if your personal information is compromised.
• Never pay bills, bank, or shop on a public or shared computer or on devices such as laptops or mobile phones that are on public wireless networks. • Do not be fooled by extraordinary offers. If a product or service looks too good to be true, it probably is. • Beware of emails asking for personal information even if they look to be from a reputable source. Fraudsters will often send “phishing”
emails to try to steal your personal information or to install malware. • Do not click on links if you do not know or trust the source. If you think you have been the victim of online fraud, scams, or identity theft, file a report with local police, your credit card company, or online to the Canadian AntiFraud Centre atwww. antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.

Rimbey Mounties investigated a break and enter where numerous firearms were stolen from a rural home. The investigation led police to a home in Lacombe where a search warrant was executed. A 28-yearold man was arrested on scene and charged with possession of stolen property. Numerous stolen items were recovered in the searched residence. Further investigation revealed additional alleged offences recently committed by the thief and serious charges are pending the outcome of the investigation. Bentley School’s Stephen Lush wins award Submitted by Lexi Moore and Jaxon Zimmer - Bentley School News Correspondents We are very proud and excited to report that, on December 5 our school’s assistant principal, Stephen Lush, won an ASAA (Alberta Schools Athletic Association) Zone Award of Merit for Alberta’s Central Zone. Lush is Bentley School’s representative in the Central Zone which consists of 57 schools. The ASAA Zone Award of Merit is presented annually in recognition of outstanding service to the students of Alberta schools in the promotion and operation of athletic programs in the Zone of the ASAA. The Executive Director of ASAA, John Paton,
delivered a touching speech as he presented this most prestigious award to Lush. The following is a portion of Paton’s speech: Steve has taught for 17 years – three years in Fox Creek, nine years in Eckville and five years in Bentley and has been the vice principal/athletic director the last three years in Bentley. He has been the CASAA president for 14 years and a very integral member of the Central Zone Association hosting numerous area, zone and Provincial championships. Steve was on the ASAA Executive as Athletic Director and the Board as the Team Handball commissioner. He was very involved in bringing Team Handball to the Association. Continued on Page 16

Firearms enthusiast speaks out in favour of the sport Dear Editor: In any Western Canadian Prairie town in 1965, it would have been as common to see two 14-yearold boys carrying single shot rimfire rifles en route to the gopher patch as it would be to see the same boys these days carrying their skateboards to the skateboard park or some equally suitable urban terrain. The only difference is how people would view the boys with the rifles these days. Not all, but many adults would suspect the worst. “Those boys are up to no good, why else would they be carrying firearms- my goodness, call the police”. As I carefully consider how I might deliver the following thought in inoffensive terms, I am reminded of the sentiment Van Morrison conveyed when he penned the verse ; “It ain’t righteous indignation that makes me complain, Just tell me why oh why must I always explain?” Well, I am not indignant and yes I do feel compelled to explain to those folks who, perhaps through no fault of their own, lack an appreciation of the recreational benefits of gopher shooting or else have a dim view of the activity itself not knowing it is based on sound agricultural practices and carries no nefarious motives. The situation is this: destructive gopher colony – reduced pasture output – injuries to cattle equals application of remedy – shoot gopher. It is no more complex or intrinsically evil than
that. It is more environmentally friendly and humane than chemical solutions plus it provides opportunity for the development of skills suitable to a broader range of firearm use not to mention the self-confidence and respect it engenders in the individual who pursues such a shooting discipline. In the early 1930s, my grandfather bought a Cooey .22 rimfire rifle to supplement his blacksmithing income by shooting and marketing muskrats. He paid seven dollars for the rifle and was pleased to tell me (years later) that he had recovered the cost in one week (about 30 rats). By the time I started using it, it had lost its front site which grandpa replaced by filing down a five cent piece and fitting it to the front dovetail. Several years after that, when I became it’s proud owner, I skillfully rendered it a “Safari grade model” by taking my old jackknife and carving a freehand diamond pattern into the comb stock resplendent with the initials “DA” In what I would have to characterize as “Epileptic Turkey Scratch” font. My earliest memories included the mysterious residence of that rifle. Yes, that’s what it seemed like – the rifle had its own persona - you know, like Davy Crockett’s Hawkins rifle named “Betsy”. It lived in a closet behind grandpa’s bed and I was never allowed to see it without permission. Fortunately my grandfather encouraged my interest in the outdoors and because that rifle was as important a piece of equipment as a fishing rod or tackle box, permission was granted frequently.

A typical conversation would go something like this: “Grandpa, can we shoot later today?” Reply: “First I have to sharpen a plowshare for Harry Mashanis and weld up a sickle bar for Garnet Strait. You can crank the blower on the forge for me then we can go down to the garden and practice.” Sure enough, later that day, Grandpa would shut the fire down in the forge, lock the door to the shop, take me to the house where we would wash some of the coal dust and smoke from the shop off of our face and hands. Grandpa would tell me to get the rifle as he would reach up to the top shelf in the kitchen cupboard and bring down a yellow and red box of of whizbang .22 shells. Off we went to the north end of the garden on the outskirts of town. Grandpa would set up a paper target and we would go back 20 yards to the south where we had a bench set up. Grandpa would instruct me on safety protocol , trigger control, site picture, direction of muzzle, all of

which served to heighten the anticipation of chambering one of those magnificent little golden missiles and firing the first shot. Thanks to my grandfather’s interest in improving my skill level and his keen desire to promote character in his grandson, I became a competent rimfire shooter at an early age and was winning turkey shoots by the time I was 12. I am now a 62-year-old firearms enthusiast who can maintain a respectable presence on most ranges. As for the character aspect, I hope I haven’t failed my grandfather’s expectations too badly. I will leave others to opine on that. I don’t care what sport or avenue of maturation you choose for the youths in your sphere of influence as long as you choose one that encompasses courtesy, respect, and social value. Rimbey Agricultural Society may receive some dollars from the Town of Rimbey for their new partially constructed Agrim Centre, but the final decision won’t be made until council completes its budget deliberations. At its Dec. 9 meeting, Ken Whitelock from the ag society’s board of directors requested council to pick up the approximately $90,000 tab for the installation of the shallow services for the new centre. “We are asking if the town of Rimbey would like to be involved and pay for the shallow services for us,” said Whitelock. Mayor Rick Pankiw said the Agrim Centre will be a positive for Rimbey.

concession and a grandstand to seat 900. The centre is to be multi-functional and bring in spectators for various events as well as provide space for organizations such as 4-H clubs. The ag centre is to be built with an outside balcony. Builders will use green technology in the construction of a solar wall and rainwater will be used for the building’s non-potable water needs. Ironwood Building Systems is the primary contractor. The board is hopeful more private and corporate sponsors will come forward to lend financial support to the $4.5 million dollar building. Donors are also encouraged to purchase square footage at $25 a square. For more information on the Rimbey Agrim centre, check out the website at www.agrim.ca.

“It will do a lot of good things for the Town of Rimbey,” he said. “As a mayor I am going to strongly recommend that we support it in some way. I’m sure all of council will agree that it has the potential to benefit the town immensely through the trickle down effect. Everyone will benefit and in the big picture that is what we as a council support.” Pankiw said council will need to review the development bylaw to determine what the guidelines are regarding the allocation of dollars for a project such as the Agrim Centre. Whitelock said the Agrim Centre is moving along on schedule. “It should be sheeted in by Christmas,” he said. Bentley Farmers ‘Spiel twice as big as in 2012 By June Norvila
Ken Brown was 5-2 after 5 ends but Brown came back to be down by only one on the final end, but without the hammer. LaGrange scored one for a final score of 6-4. Tim Feader placed third and Grant Kamps fourth. The Merle Craven rink with Lee Loeppky, Tom Barker, and Lonnie Sulzle from Red Deer won the “D” event. After being up 4-2 after 5 ends against Kevin Woolsey from Rimbey, the Woolsey team scored 2 to make it tied 4-4 after six, but Craven cracked a five-ender on the seventh end to end the game. Third was Miles Wright and fourth was Kyle Brink. There was usually something free to eat for the curlers upstairs in the lounge. The banquet, catered by Lora Walker, was held in the Blindman Valley Ag Centre on Friday night. At the conclusion of play on Saturday afternoon, teams gathered upstairs and the winners picked out their prizes from a myriad of items before heading home happy and tired. “We really want to mention the support from the out-of-towners,” said Ray Walker. “We couldn’t do it without them. We want to thank the local teams as well, and also mention the junior team that played.” Good support from donors and sponsors, and the hard work of members of the executive and others made it the success it was.
A lot of hard work and personal contacting by Bentley Curling Club executive this year paid off. There was a full complement of 24 teams, twice as many as in 2012, for the 4-event 2013 Bentley Farmer’s Bonspiel that ran November 25-30. All the eight-end games were scheduled after 5 p.m., except on Saturday, and the bonspiel was open to both males and females of any age who were connected with agriculture. There were two draws on Monday and Tuesday, three draws on Wednesday and Thursday and one on Friday as that was banquet night, and the final three draws were on Saturday with the last draw starting at 1:30 p.m. All the final games proved interesting for spectators to watch. Champion of the A event of the 2013 Bentley Farmer’s Bonspiel was the local Norm Rieu rink with Gord Mydland, Dwight Homan and Don Bridge. Bonnie Muzylouski filled in for Bridge for the team’s last two games. In the final game against John Stol from Lacombe, the teams were tied 3-3 after 5 ends and 4-4 after seven ends coming home. Rieu ended up scoring one without having to throw his last rock in the eighth end for a final score of 5-4. The Lyle Lorenz team placed third and Ernie Rodermond fourth. Winning the B event was the Eckville team of Joey Olson, his father Don Olson, Wayne Edmondson, and Scott Tompkins. Rimbey’s Amnesty International Group take part in annual write-a-thon By Treena Mielke

Volunteers from the Rimbey Group of Amnesty International were at the Co-op mall, last Tuesday, doing their part for International Human Rights Day by taking part in Amnesty’ annual write-a-thon. “Write for Rights” is the world’s largest letterwriting event. In 2012 people in 80 countries wrote 1.8 million letters – letters to help save lives, stop torture, free prisoners of conscience, and send messages of hope to those who have been unjustly jailed; and those who have had loved ones disappear because of their stand against human rights abuses in their countries.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. letters, greeting cards and stamps were provided, along with information regarding the cases being addressed this year. Beeswax candles, donated by the Emerys’ Honey House in Bluffton, were also for sale. These are being offered for those who wish to shine a light for human rights today. “If you have your own candle, we hope you lit it in solidarity with all those who suffer because of abuse of their human rights. It is worthwhile noting that human rights abuse occurs in every country,” said Florence Stemo from Amnesty International (Rimbey Group).

High school principal receives distinguished leadership award By Treena Mielke
Lekas prefers to put the focus back on his school and his staff. “Our provincial exam results were very, very good,” he said. “They were significantly above the provincial average.” He is also pleased with the Rimbey high school graduation rates. “Last year we had 93 per cent graduate. The provincial average was under 75 per cent.” Lekas is also proud to note a mentoring program which happens Tuesday mornings and Thursday
Being principal of a rural high school is not without its challenges, but for Rimbey high school principal Tim Lekas, the pros of the job far outweigh the cons. Lekas, who recently received a distinguished leadership award from the Central Alberta Council for School leadership, is happy to receive the award, but insists the award has far more to do with the success of the school than to do with him, personally. “Really, it’s the whole school,” he said. “It’s the staff and the parents.” Lekas is proud of Rimbey Junior/Senior High School, where he began as a teacher 21 years ago. After more than two decades of being an integral part of the school, Lekas is pleased to see the school evolve into a positive, ever changing community. “Our school is a small community in itself,” he said. “And the staff and students all get along, we have good relationships here.” However, as with any school or community, a good leader is a crucial component to making it be the best it can be. Continued from Page 10 Steve is often the first teacher to open the door at the school in the morning and the last one to close the door at night. Congratulations Steve on a very well deserved award; you have touched, and continue to touch, many lives. Lush responded with a speech of acceptance in which he thanked his wife Marsha, and their three children, Hayley, Ian and Andrew, for allowing him the time to pursue these commitments that are so important to him. He also thanked the Bentley School and students for their interest and commitment to sports, and the Bentley School parents for trusting him with their kids. Lush ended his speech with the motto he and Bentley School’s Principal, Lane Moore, use: “Whatever is right for kids at our school – we will do it!” Congratulations, Mr. Lush! Bentley School is proud of you and your dedication to young athletes within our school, and in our zone! You are awesome!

January 18, 1966 to December 20, 2012 “The Best” God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be. So He put His arms around you and He whispered “Come to Me” With tearful eyes we watched you. We watched you fade away. Although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard-working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, he chose to take the best. It’s lonesome here without you, we miss you more each day. Life doesn’t seem the same since you have gone away. When days are sad and lonely and everything goes wrong, we seem to hear you whisper “Cheer Up and Carry On” Each time we see your picture you seem to smile and say, “Don’t cry, I’m in God’s hands, we’ll meet again someday!” Shane, Will forever and always be dearly Loved, Missed and Remembered by his Wife Debbie, Daughter Nicole and Son Brandon
