‘People were so thankful’

Strong support helps local hamper program meet rising demand By Jennifer Lang Christmas arrived early for nearly 300 local families last Saturday, when recipients turned out for what’s known as ‘Hamper Day’ in Cloverdale. “It’s been awesome. Everything just went beautiful,” said Kevin Lunder of the Cloverdale Christmas Hamper Program Monday. “We unloaded 1,000 boxes of food.” While the 2013 tally isn’t yet in, he estimates close to 300 families have been helped, up 20 per cent from last year due to rising demand, including from seniors. “People were so thankful,” on hamper day, Lunder said. “It went so smooth. There were lots of tears. And so many volunteers showed up to help them load the cars.” The hampers contain a combination of fresh fruits and vegetables, plus non-perishable food items. Recipients receive gift cards from Price Smart to buy turkeys. Children and teens are welcome to select a gift or two from the toy room, which is filled with brand new, unwrapped presents arranged by recipient age group. Cloverdale Elementary schools are the largest contributors of toy donations, said Lunder, who acts program lead along

with wife Trish. Dedicated volunteers like Marie Kovacs and Sandy Doyle were part of the army of volunteers assembling hampers last week. On Dec. 12, they were nearing the end of their final shift, sorting donations and putting together hampers to meet Saturday’s deadline. “It’s fun,” said Doyle, insisting she prefers working at the warehouse, helping others, to shopping in crowded malls. Kovacs, meanwhile, had been there four days in a row, and figured she hasn’t missed a year since the program began. The Cloverdale Christmas Hamper Program is run by volunteers, and relies on support from businesses, individuals, churches and schools in the Cloverdale area. Even Surrey’s first responders got involved, helping collect 500 pounds of food and $900 in cash during Hillcrest Village Shopping Centre’s Cloverdale Community Cares event. The Cloverdale Legion also donated $2,000. Coat drive launched The threat of snow and more cold weather has inspired a local youth group to hold a winter coat drive. Friday, Dec. 20, from 5-8:30 p.m. the Surrey Cares Youth Empowering Team (YES) is gathering coats at City Centre Library. The coats will be

donated to a non-profit organization helping homeless people. The YES team is a program operated by the Surrey Cares Foundation. Members are Grade 11 and 12 students from Enver Creek, Queen Elizabeth and Kwantlen Park secondary schools.

o, your mom’s an addict, dad’s out of the picture, and you’re a former foster kid who’s just trying to keep it together. Mom keeps trying to sponge off you, now that you’ve got your own place. But with the holidays coming, she’s disappeared again. You’re 19, and you dream of applying for veterinary assistant school, because you love animals, but you can’t really even afford groceries. Now imagine it’s Christmas. That’s the situation facing Tara (not her real name), one of five foster youths whose stories were recently shared in an appeal for donations of grocery and department store gift cards for young people who could really use them. Although the holiday season is a happy time for many, filled with family, traditions, gifts and great food, it’s a time of pain for others, according to the folks at SOS Children’s Village BC. The society, headquartered in Cloverdale, runs the Transition to Adulthood program. It’s for youths aged 16 to 24 who have little support from family. When asked what they wanted for Christmas, “almost all of the kids asked for grocery gift cards,” program coordinator Katie Perkins, a social worker, told the Reporter Monday. “A lot of them are working part time,” she says. “They’re really trying to support themselves.” The society is trying to make this Christ-

mas a little brighter by helping them meet their basic needs. Tara, for instance, needs bath towels for her place, and would love some gift cards for Chapters or Indigo. A gift card for PriceSmart would help with groceries. Matthew, also 19, was living with his emotionally abusive mom until she was evicted in September. Now he’s couch-surfing while attending school full time. He’s hoping to get a job so he can finish his studies. Meanwhile, he desperately needs help getting food. Gift cards from Wal-Mart or Price Smart would really help him out. Or picture Jennifer, a young mom with a two-year-old girl. Like the others, she’s trying to make her own way in the world, without the kind of family life many of us take for granted. She’s only getting a couple of shifts a week at her job – not enough to provide for herself or her daughter. A gift card for Toys R Us is on Jennifer’s wish list. Donations of gift cards or cash will be gratefully accepted. Cash will not be given directly to youth, but will be used to purchase specific items for youth by staff. Perkins says the program was launched about a year and a half ago to address the needs of foster kids making the often difficult and confusing transition to adulthood. Once they reach the age of 19, they’re more or less expected to fend for themselves, even

though it’s practically become the norm for children from stable families to remain at home into their adult years. Perkins and colleague Stephanie Shuttleworth work one-on-one with the youth, helping them with a range of needs, whether it’s hunting down safe and affordable housing, finding a job or applying for valid identification so they can qualify for social assistance. They also provide counselling and therapy. Having the type of support that many of us receive from our family and friends is critical during the first two or three years after youths leave foster care, and can turn their lives around. “Once they turn 19, there are so few supports for them,” she says. Perkins notes statistics continue to show that as many as 70 per cent of the homeless in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside lived in foster care. don’t think that Frank meant to start anything. It just happened. That particular year, 1933, had been very hard for a lot of people and when he got that extra job wallpapering a house in Kitsilano just before Christmas, well, he just couldn’t help himself. The people he had done the job for were so happy that he received some extra cash. He had himself, Violet (my grandmother) and two boys, Francis and Oliver, and he felt that things had been good for him and he wanted to share the wealth (so to speak). On Christmas Eve while Vio-

let was cooking the turkey and the boys were decorating the tree, Frank went out and down to the rail yards in east Vancouver not far from the docks. He found a gentleman who was down on his luck, by the name of Charles, and invited him home to share a meal and some good cheer. After a wonderful meal Frank gave Charles a set of clothes that he could spare and played the piano while the family sang. When Charles came out of the bathroom he was a changed man. It turned out that he was a baker and an opera singer of sorts and he and Violet sang all the old favorite

songs from yesteryear. Because of my grandfather’s generosity, Charles had a job inside of a week at a bakery and he and Frank became good friends. Francis became known as Fran (my dad, Fran Dowie), and Oliver became known as Taller (my uncle). Since then, Christmas Eve has been special in my family. Friends, neighbors, and even strangers have always received a gift of sorts, either baked or hand-made and all given with love and the joy of sharing. CONTRIBUTED PHOTO

Jingle Bell walk gives back The Jingle bell Walk is AJ McLellan Elementary School’s annual way of giving to those in need. The school drops off bags in the community a few days before they return and pick up the filled bags. The community has been very supportive of this endeavor and the students look forward to this event every year. This year, they filled over 130 boxes of non-perishable food items for the Surrey Food Bank. It was truly a community endeavor with parents and families donating food items and their time to help students go door to door and collect items.

Kai’s favorite part: My favorite part of Christmas is setting up the Christmas Tree because every year I get new ornaments. My little sister gets one too.

Simone says... My favorite part of Christmas is presents because I like the gifts that I get and sometimes I get a present for my mom and dad.

Christmas is Special to Me Because.... Christmas is special to me because my family and I get to trade presents. I get to sleep in. I get to make a Christmas list for Santa to read. Some time in December my family will get to go to a family gathering. I will get to see my aunts and my uncles, my grandparents and my cousins. It will be the best family gathering I have ever had in my whole entire life. Each year my grandma gets my family and me a Jangula photo for my parents and me as a present. We always stay over for dinner and we have cake for dessert. We always have two cakes because there is about 35 Jangulas at the gathering. That is why Christmas is special to me. Christmas is special to me because it is the day Jesus is born. It is also special to me because I get to decorate the Christmas tree with my mom and little sister. My mom used to put real candy canes on the Christmas tree so when I was hungry I could just take one off the tree and eat it, but I don’t think we will do that this year, because we have a new puppy named Zuko and he’ll probably eat it and get sick. A few weeks ago we moved most of our furniture and make it look like some kind of Christmas wonderland of some sorts. I also like Christmas because we get cool or super cool presents. My Christmas memories are that last year, I sat by the warm, toasty, crackling fire pit that was so warm it was melting down my spine! Since I was two, my family and I created a tradition. It was every year, we would all watch the Polar Express! I would also get a new pair of PJ’s, my favorite ones were a reindeer pair! I always loved waking at 6:45 in the morning to wake up my brother. It’s always a blast opening my stocking and giving gifts! Those are my family memories!

On Christmas Eve, my mom, dad and I go to our friends Pam and Simons. They have two daughters. There names are Reese and Cameron. I’ve known them since I was born. When we arrive I can already smell dinner. It smells really good. When we get inside we sit down and they offer my mom and dad a warm coffee. And they offer their girls and I a hot cocoa. After we finish our drinks we set the table for dinner and put the food on the table. After dinner we start baking cookies. Once the cookies are finished we start decorating them. After the decorating we go downstairs and watch a Christmas movie. When it is finished, we get to open one present. The present is traditionally pajamas, slippers or some kind of small toy. After we open our presents it is time for us to go home. When we get home I get to open one

family present. After I open my present I put out the milk and cookies and go to bed. When I wake up in the morning I run into my parent’s room and jump on their bed until they wake up. Once they wake up I have to wait until they are ready to go downstairs. When we go downstairs I see all the presents under the tree. First I dig into my stocking and traditionally I find a stuffy on the top so I don’t see all the stuff inside. When I pull the stuffy out of the stocking I see all the candy and headbands and ponytails. Once the stockings are empty, we open all of our presents. After all the presents are open I thank my parents and phone all my family to say thank you. And that is Christmas in my family . Selina Reid, Grade 5

Hmmm, let me think. What does Christmas mean to me? Ah ha! I’ve got it. You’re going to love this piece of writing! Christmas to me is to be with my family and friends, to give presents to people in my neighbourhood, family and friends. Also to give to the less fortunate. I don’t just think you should do it to prove to someone, you should do it and be proud of yourself for doing that deed. It’s also about the kids sleeping and waiting for sleeping and waiting for Santa Claus to come sliding chimney with the presents lying in his sack waiting to be put under the Christmas tree and for the kids to unwrap them. Then the next morning I can see the kids rushing down the stairs so fast to see the presents lying under the beautiful red and gold Christmas tree. Why? I think this is meaningful because these are the memories we carry with us through our life, the pictures, albums, videos and special notes from our loved ones. Eid Eid is the time of year when all my family gets together. To a lot of people Eid is the time of the year to get money and presents. But to me, well, it is getting money and praying, being thankful for everything we have and meeting my family that I have not seen in a while. Every year my family gets a sheep and eats it and it’s delicious! We always have an Eid party so all my family gets together. Since a lot of my cousins come, we play soccer or cricket in my huge front lawn. After dinner we have dessert and we can have anything we want. There are two Eid’s, Eidal-fit and Eid-al-Adha.

Christmas — it means gathering up with my family around the fire as the hot air kisses our cheeks. It means giggling, tiptoeing downstairs waiting for your parents to wake. It means playing with your cousins, brother or sister. It means putting the tree up or getting a real one. Putting up the lights and decorations. It means clearing your driveway of snow when the cold misty air nips at your nose. It means going outside and building a snowfort or have a snowball fight with a friend or sibling or making snow angels as the cold snow covers you like a blanket like it’s trying to trap you or if you’re not an outside person, staying inside near the warm toasty fire and reading or drinking hot chocolate or doing both at the same time. It means seeing the smiles on your sigling’s faces when they open their presents. What Christmas means to me is giving, caring, loving and happiness. Christmas For Christmas, my family and I are going to get a real tree for the first time. Then we are going to have a party where we have my three brothers, Kaiden, Dayton and Jordan. Then my mom and aunts come to dinner and decorate the tree. We will have all sorts of food and treats. YUMMY. I can’t wait until this happens. I hope it comes soon so I can eat some tasty stuff. Well, first things first, it’s about Jesus’ birthday, but I’m not a believer in Jesus and I just celebrate it because I just celebrate it. To me, Christmas means jingle bells and green pine trees in your living room. Christmas is jumping into snow’s freezing cold arms that chill you to the bone. Hot chocolate with marshmallows in the color of the rainbow, that my mom bought for me. Snowball fights with my brother and friends that come from down the road. Mini Christmas trees in my room that is decked out in mini everything, from Christmas lights to candy canes made of plastic. I love deck the halls in school because you can make whatever you want that is Christmas related but on the other hand anything craft related I am a part of, trust me! My favorite part of Christmas shopping is donated to the people in need.

Christmas is an awesome holiday. If you don’t believe me, listen to this story. The Christmas Story Christmas is an awesome holiday. Where you get awesome gift. Oh and you get to stay home from school. Have you heard of Santa? He wears a red hat and a red coat. Not trying to be rude, but he’s chubby. Santa comes every year and gives you cool stuff. Like racecars and snowboards. Back to the real world. So do you believe me now? Yes, great. Because I was running out of ideas.

Christmas is a time to show your love to people by giving them a present they will cherish and love forever. It’s a month of red, green, yellow, and blue lights that flicker in the dark. Christmas is time to write over flowing lists of all the toys that should be toppling out of the bottom of your tree on Christmas morning. I always love giving people presents as much as receiving, seeing their faces light up feels like I just made one more person’s day. In my school choir we go to senior homes and sing Christmas songs. In my guide group we made cards for the senior homes. Christmas is my favorite holiday and I just love to decorate and it’s something my whole family get to do together. It means a lot to do all these things and make people happy. I try my best to make everyone I know have the best Christmas ever!

I’ve been getting into the Christmas spirit myself through a number of activities: the Surrey Tree Lighting, Sources Season of Trees at Fraser Downs, Surrey’s Santa Parade of Lights, the Surrey Chamber of Commerce Christmas Luncheon, the Cloverdale Christmas Hamper Kickoff (and of course visits to local merchants in pursuit of the perfect gift for members of my family).
