Red Scorpions boss Michael Le to serve three more years in jail for role in killings; gets nine years credit for time served
Decision on Surrey Fraser Docks’ application could come at any time
by Sheila Reynolds
by Jeff Nagel
A SENTENCE of 12 years has been handed down to Quang Vinh
Thang (Michael) Le – who pleaded guilty to playing a role in the Surrey Six murders – but with credit for time already served, the admitted gang leader now faces just over three more years in jail. Chief Justice Austin Cullen delivered the sentence Tuesday afternoon in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver, after earlier in the day hearing an agreed submission from Crown and defence lawyers recommending the 12-year sentence, minus double-time credit totalling nearly nine years for the four-and-a-half years Le has spent in custody. Le pleaded guilty last month to conspiracy to murder rival drug dealer Corey Lal. A first-degree murder charge was stayed. There is no minimum sentence for conspiracy to murder, and the maximum is a life sentence. Lal was shot to death in suite 1505 of the Balmoral Tower apartment on Oct. 19, 2007, along with five other men: his brother Michael, Ryan Bartolomeo, Edward Narong, Edward Schellenberg Christopher Mohan. Elieen Mohan andCullen said the planned murder of one person “exploded into a monstrous display of wanton, pitiless violence which stole the lives of six people ... and caused enormous devastation to their remaining family and loved ones.” Cullen said Le’s complicity “in law” was confined to the death of Corey Lal, but said his participation ultimately led to the deaths of the other five victims. “As such, his moral complicity is high,” said Cullen. Le apologized to the families of the victims in court Tuesday, saying while he didn’t deserve it, he hoped they’d one day be able to forgive him.

Balmoral Tower in North Surrey was the scene of a mass murder on Oct. 19, 2007 that claimed the lives of six men. On Tuesday in B.C. Supreme Court, Michael Le was sentenced to 12 years in prison for his role in the crime. Le has already spent four-and-a-half years in jail, and with double-time credit, will serve three more years behind bars.

posal in Surrey faced more opposition protests and a call for an interagency review as a new deadline for public comments on the project ended Tuesday. Port Metro Vancouver could make a decision at any time on the application by Fraser Surrey Docks to export up to four million tonnes a year of coal, which would come by train through White Rock, Surrey and Delta, and go by barge down the Fraser River and north to a transshipment terminal at Texada Island. Critics staged a silent vigil at the port authority offices Tuesday afternoon as the deadline passed for comments on an environmental impact assessment, which has been widely criticized as inadequate. That followed a scuffle with staff at the port offices Monday when masked protesters dressed as Santas attempted to deliver lumps of coal. On Monday, Delta council voted Monday to lead an independent inter-agency review of the coal transfer facility, although it’s unclear if it will be approved before such a review gets off the ground.

Police probe city’s 24th homicide Body found near 102 Avenue and 124 Street by Kevin Diakiw THE INTEGRATED Homicide Inves-
tigation Team (IHIT) is investigating Surrey’s 24th homicide of the year, after a body was discovered about 11 a.m. Tuesday near 102 Avenue and 124 Street. The body was found near the railroad tracks in the west Whalley neighbourhood. As of The Leader’s press deadline Wednesday, the police were not providing much information. “Details such as the victim’s age or gender are not known. IHIT is treating this as a suspicious death case at this time until further examination of the scene is completed,” said Sgt. Bari Emam of IHIT on Tuesday. “We are in the first few hours of the investigation and very little is known to us at this time.” IHIT is asking anyone who was in the area of 124 Street and 102 Avenue prior to 11 a.m. Tuesday morning and may have seen any suspicious activities, persons, or vehicles to call the IHIT Tipline at 1-877-551-4448 or email ihittipline@rcmp-grc.gc.ca. Dear Prudence, who abused you? Surrey Animal Resource Centre seeks information about emaciated puppy Black Press THE SURREY Animal Resource Centre is
caring for a Doberman puppy found in “horrific condition” and is seeking information about what happened to the dog. The female, likely around five months of age, was dropped off anonymously at a North Surrey veterinary clinic on Friday afternoon. The brown-and-black pup was starving, emaciated and suffering from a serious case of demodectic mange – a mite infestation. She also weighed in at just 28 pounds, when the average Doberman her age would weigh 40 pounds, said Kim Marosevich, the animal care and control manager at the centre. Marosevich said it would take “months and months” for the dog’s condition to

deteriorate to such a degree. She is appealing to the public for information about where the dog came from. “We would like to ask the community if someone, somewhere has seen her before,” Marosevich said, noting the dog’s ears have been clipped, so she has been to a vet at some point. Any information about who might be responsible will be forwarded to the BCSPCA, which conducts cruelty investigations, said Marosevich. Despite her condition, the puppy – who the animal centre’s staff have named Prudence, after The Beatles’ song Dear Prudence – has a sweet temperament. “In spite of barely being able to stand up when we first received her, she is happy and friendly to all and wants nothing more than good food and a warm soft bed to cuddle in,” said Marosevich. She said the pup will recover but will need months of medical treatment before she is able to be adopted into her forever home. If you know anything about what happened to Prudence, or if you are concerned about another animal’s welfare, you are asked to call Kim Marosevich at 604-5756628. newsroom@surreyleader.com

The municipality will seek participation by the health and environment ministries of both the provincial and federal governments, as well as Metro Vancouver and the cities of Surrey, White Rock and New Westminster. The environmental review commissioned by Fraser Surrey Docks found no adverse impacts to the environment or human health. Critics say it didn’t go far enough in considering potential risks from coal dust and other impacts along the BNSF railway line, or the climate change impacts when the U.S. thermal coal is burned in Asia. “There’s no support for this,” anticoal activist Kevin Washbrook said. “It’s up to the port to show how it’s going to address the concerns.” He said campaigners will turn the heat up on the provincial government in the new year, adding health minister Terry Lake has not backed up objections raised by Lower Mainland medical health officers. Washbrook also said it’s hypocritical for the province to say it can export liquefied natural gas to help wean China off of burning coal, when it can simply block more coal exports from B.C. right now. The extra coal to be shipped is a 7.5 per cent increase over current coal shipments.

Mohan: Some wounds won’t heal From page 1 The Lal brothers’ mom Cheryl left the courtroom during Le’s statement. Her daughter Jourdane Lal read an emotional victim impact statement in court earlier, saying her brothers were incredible young men with beautiful hearts. She said her kids have been robbed of knowing their uncles and that she’d had to watch her parents endure the nightmare of losing two of their children and the agony of the ensuing trial. “I’ve been told that time heals everything, but I’m still waiting,” Jourdane said, noting it
had been exactly 2,248 days since the murders. Eileen Mohan, mom of Surrey victim Christopher Mohan, also read a statement in court, saying her only son “made me fall in love with him every single day.” The Mohans lived next door to the murder suite and Chris was heading out when he was dragged into the mayhem. Eileen said Le’s guilty plea doesn’t erase what happened on Oct. 19, 2007. “The blood that you spilled out of my son was my blood. The lifeless body you left behind was my flesh. The spirit

in Christopher that was taken was my spirit,” she said to Le. “There’s some wounds that time cannot heal.” Mohan told Le she hoped he would one day have a son so he could experience what real love feels like. Though they were not read in court, several other family members of the six victims also submitted impact statements, including Bartolomeo’s mom, the Lals’ mother, father and another sister, and Narong’s sister. Lois Schellenberg, wife of Abbotsford’s Ed Schellenberg, who was repairing gas fireplaces in the building on the day of the murders, called her husband “thoughtful, loving and kind.” She said he was her best friend and that his death changed the lives of their family forever. “When I think of our children it breaks my heart to think Ed won’t be able to walk Rachel down the aisle on her wedding day, he would have been so proud to do that,” Lois Schellenberg wrote. “He will also not get to see the amazing man his son will become,” she added. Rachel Schellenberg wrote about her “beautiful” and “amazing” father whose absence has left a hole in her life. “There’s nothing to do but be. I’m surrounded by wonderful people, ones who care with unending love... but they’re not my daddy.” There are courtimposed bans in place that forbid publishing some details of the case, as well as any images or descriptions of Le. The court heard Tuesday that the Surrey Six murders began as an intention to eliminate Corey Lal, a rival drug dealer, and send a
message that the Red Scorpions gang wasn’t to be defied. The court heard Le initially didn’t want Lal killed, but later agreed after associate Jamie Bacon suggested if they didn’t kill him, the gang would appear weak. Le spoke to others involved after the fact, and was angry that Eddie Narong, who was a friend, was among the dead. Le’s lawyer Christopher Johnson reminded those questioning the length of Le’s sentence that his client has already been in jail for almost five years. “He has pled guilty to what he was charged with – that is on the conspiracy aspect of it. The Crown’s case with respect to the murder part of it was always weak against Mr. Le.” Johnson said his client wants to change his life and leave the gang underworld. Le is required to serve two-thirds of his 37-month sentence, Johnson said. The trial of Cody Haevischer and Matthew Johnston that began in late September will continue in January. Each has pleaded not guilty to six counts of first-degree murder and one count of conspiracy to murder Corey Lal. The Crown’s theory is that Haevischer, Johnston and Person X (who can’t be named due to a publication ban) went to the Balmoral to kill Corey Lal and shot the others to eliminate any witnesses. Bacon is also charged with conspiracy and murder in connection with Corey Lal’s death, but is being tried separately at a later date. Another man, Sophon Sek, faces a manslaughter charge and two counts of break and enter in relation to the case, but will also be tried separately.

in need has become a priority for students at Fraser Heights Secondary in North Surrey. Since Dec. 1, students in Grades 8-12 enrolled in the Learning
Assistance Class began collecting food for the Surrey Food Bank. The learning assistance resource centre has a number of “different learners,” said teacher Randi Sykes. “They often walk through our doors fail-
ing class and pretty beat down by the system and we really try to boost their self-esteem.” The teachers impressed on the students how the misconceptions of who uses the food bank can be very misleading.
“Some students were quick to judge and assumed only drug addicts use the food bank,” Sykes said. “But we try to explain that’s not true and often the need is right in your own backyard.” Once the students began sharing their own stories with their classmates, that’s when the program really began to take off. Jordan French was struggling with some of his classes and decided to take part in the program. “I live in an apartment complex in Guildford and I know what it’s like to go without,” said the 17-year-old Grade 11 student. “On the first day, I brought 50 cans in. I feel it’s right to give back to the community. It makes me happy.” For Grade 11 student Jenny Huynh the class has become somewhat of a refuge. “I was bullied in school and this class helps me with my school work and with life,” said the shy 16-year-old. “I got involved (in the food drive) because I have two cellphones yet so many people out there don’t even have food to put on the table or even a roof (over their head).” She donated food along with clothes and jewelry that she felt young teens would enjoy. So far the class has collected 2,300 items of food that will be delivered to the food bank on Dec. 20. “Not one student asked why they should donate,” said Sykes.”No one asked what they should receive in return; no one needed to. I didn’t need to motivate, this is all them.”

Watts is in Israel, drumming up partnerships with medical technology firms. The mayor is working toward turning the city into the country’s “innovation gateway” and hopes partnerships with Israel can help get Surrey there. But not everyone is enthused with Watts jetting off to Israel on the taxpayers’ dime. Jordan Bateman, B.C. director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, said that often prime ministers and premiers go on these sorts of business missions, but municipal politicians don’t have the same clout as their senior counterparts. “To me, the question always comes back to what’s the business plan behind this,” Bateman said. “We haven’t seen one. And taxpayers are sending the mayor to
Israel at a time when we’re contemplating a tax increase, among other issues.” Bateman, a former city councillor in Langley, also said he’s never seen this type of spending taking place without the nod from council. “This surprised me… I always thought you couldn’t spend money unless you had a motion of council.” It was instead approved by Surrey’s Investment and Innovation Committee on Dec. 2. Watts said in a release the trip is a worthwhile venture. “Israel is known as the world’s global ‘start-up nation’,” she said. “Surrey is looking to tap into Israel’s pioneering cutting edge medical, entrepreneurial and scientific innovation.” The aim is to strengthen Innovation Boulevard – the area in and around Surrey Memorial Hospital, SFU and City Centre.

Yes, it’s a minister’s job to feed children
LETTERS
Whippet has winter whipped WITH THE COLD temperatures upon us
“IS IT MY JOB TO feed my neigh-
bour’s child? I don’t think so.” That is the quote from Federal Minister of Industry James Moore, a resident of B.C., the province with the worst child poverty level across Canada where thousands of kids go to school hungry every day. Despite a unanimous motion passed in the House of Commons back in 1989 to end poverty, and a motion renewed in 2009, Moore states that it is not federal responsibility to make sure children get a proper breakfast. In the Bible, Cain says to God, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” James Moore has given us the definitive response from the Conservative government. Hungry children can fend for themselves; the government is too busy flogging pipelines. Larry Kazdan Vancouver

and the already frequent threat of snowfalls, it’s important to remember our the dogs this time of year. With the necessity to still go outside to relieve themselves and for occasional exercise, these frigid temperatures can be a bit of a challenge, even for the larger woolly hounds. I own a seven-year-old whippet and last winter I had many challenges keeping her warm and keeping her feet protected. As I bundle myself up in my own winter coat, scarf, toque, and mittens I can’t help but think, “boy if I can’t handle the cold, how can she?” Understanding that each breed is different, if you have a less furry breed such as my whippet, here are a few quick tips to keep your dogs warm, healthy, and happy through the winter season: • Purchase a sweater or a lined coat to provide an extra layer of warmth, specifically for the short-haired breeds. If your dog is as slim and lean as my whippet, it may be necessary to provide a layer over their legs as well. Iluka is wearing a whippet “snugly” that provides warmth to the majority of her body, including her neck, and it includes a convenient opening in the back for her to do her business. Polar fleece is the best option for keeping the warmth close to dogs’ bodies. • Invest in dog boots that have proper

traction, such as Neo Paws, so that your dog won’t suffer from any reactions from the cold, salt, and snow removal chemicals that are often placed on walkways and sidewalks. Dog boots also protect the paws from the build-up of ice and snow that tends to ball up in the fur between the footpads. • If you do not use dog boots, frequently check the paw pads for cuts and cracks and each time you take your dog out, clean their paws thoroughly to remove any unwanted salts and chemicals. As dogs tend to lick their paws, this will avoid and adverse reactions from ingestion of those substances. • Be sure your dog is eating regularly, as dogs use a lot of energy to keep warm in these conditions, and therefore they are burning fuel. • While indoors, keep their sleeping areas warm and dry and away from areas with drafts such as beneath window sills or near doorways. As a result of these few simple measures, Iluka is now a happy winter whippet and enjoys going outside despite the cold. So enjoy a happy holiday season, take care of yourselves, take care of each other, and remember the dogs too.

Surrey’s Board of Education claimed just under $27,000 during the last school year, an increase of about $3,000 over the year prior. The expense claim figures for the elected officials are included in the school district’s Statement of Financial Information (SOFI) for the year ended June 2013, released late last week. Trustee Shawn Wilson, who also serves as board chairperson, topped the spending, submitting a tab of $6,193, up about $400 from the 2011-2012 year. Past-chair Trustee Laurae McNally had the second-highest bill at $5,838, down about $600 from last year. Trustee Terry Allen’s expenses of $4,911 were nearly double those claimed last year, while Trustee Laurie Larsen – who is now board vice-chair – more than doubled her’s, jumping from $1,730 last year to about $3,800 this year. Trustee Charlene Dobie spent about $3,800 as well. Trustee Reni Masi claimed $1,608, a decrease of $2,400 from the year prior, while Trustee Pam Glass, who doesn’t drive, submitted a bill of just $592. Most of the expenses claimed are to cover out-of-town conferences and car expenses. The claims are in addition to the board’s combined wages of $217,300. Trustees were receiving remuneration of $30,400 annually, but voted last June to decrease it to $30,200. The chair and vice-chair get an extra $3,000 and $1,500 per year, respectively. The Surrey School District paid a total of approximately $448 million in employee salaries between June 2012 and June 2013, including wages of teachers, principals, support staff and senior management. A further $1.5 million in expenses was claimed by employees. The SOFI report for this year and years prior can be viewed online at http://bit.ly/1bLkVsT

Greg Moore will serve a third term as chair of the Metro Vancouver board. No challenger opposed Moore in a Dec. 13 election and Vancouver Coun. Raymond Louie was also returned as vice-chair by acclamation. Moore said key decisions facing regional politicians in 2014 include how to respond to Kinder Morgan’s application to twin the Trans Mountain oil pipeline, the search for a referendum-approved solution to TransLink’s financial needs, as well as the next procurement choices as Metro aims to build a new waste-toenergy plant. “We’ve also asked for more information on the impacts of the Massey Tunnel replacement.”

buying habits and potentially harm their health. The bylaw prohibits various gifts, rebates, refunds and other incentives, not just loyalty points. The college says such incentives are inappropriate “kickbacks” to customers. “After careful consideration, the college still firmly believes that paying patients for prescriptions is unprofessional, unethical and unsafe,” it states on its website. The college argues some patients may go without their medicine until they can fill a prescription on a loyalty point bonus day. It also believes patients with thirdparty insurance who don’t pay out of pocket may keep refilling a prescription after they no longer need it just to collect more points. The college calls that a drain on limited health care dollars and says drugs not used by the intended patient may be abused by others or diverted to the illegal drug trade. It says paying customers a kickback undermines pharmacists’ integrity and the credibility of the profession. “Patients do not expect to receive payments for other health services they receive, and drug therapy should not be the exception to that rule.” The college hopes a points ban will result in patients choosing a pharmacy or pharmacist on their own merits, not inducements. Some patients on Canada Safeway’s Facebook page said they may switch to closer pharmacies as a result of the ban on issuing Air Miles points for prescriptions at Safeway. Victoria senior Randy McEwen said he doubts anyone would delay filling prescriptions for the sake of a bonus. “Most Canadians are smart enough to make rational decisions,” said McEwen, who uses prescription points to fly his children in from Edmonton. “This ban discriminates the elderly and the chronically ill. Why would you let me collect points on gas or banking but not on prescription drugs?”

ar crashes and their legal consequences are so tightly woven into the fabric of modern life that without a ‘wow factor’ they barely receive mention. Stories require lots of victims and vehicles, massive inconvenience or defiance of all normal expectations. The early November crash on Denman Street headlined as “Four Vancouver Police Officers hurt after car crashes into Fatburger restaurant” had it for sure. Criminal consequences are more likely to ‘wow’, but often not newsworthy until the sentencing stage is reached. Then we are invited to outrage at the injustice of a sentence that to some of us, may appear not to fit the crime. Recently, a Texas story has captured headlines usually including the word “affluenza,” a portmanteau of affluence and influenza coined by critics of consumerism to denote the ‘sickness’—mostly psychological— caused by too much wealth and wealthseeking. It refers to the defence argument in the sentencing of a 16-year-old boy who killed 4 and injured 11 while driving impaired. The gist of the Texas story was that the driver had been “so spoiled by his doting and affluent parents he had no idea of the consequence of his actions or the concept of taking responsibility for what he did.” A psychologist for the defence said the boy had never been disciplined, abused alcohol, “had freedoms no young person should have including being allowed to drive when he was 13,” and, hence, believed that “money solved everything.”
Various media reports concluded that driver’s sentence—10 years probation and mandatory treatment costing $450,000 to be borne by his parents—indicated that the affluenza defence worked insofar as it avoided the possible 20-year jail term. The victims’ families were reportedly “bereft and enraged.” Mark Memmott, a reporter for npr.org, has, however, dug deeper. Noting the general lack of mention of State District Judge Boyd’s reasoning or detail about the conditions of the sentence, he quoted The Fort Worth StarTelegram, which did do so: Judge Boyd ordered … therapy at a longterm, in-patient facility. He will stay in … juvenile detention until the juvenile probation department prepares a report about possible treatment programs. If the teen violates the terms of his probation, he could be sent to prison for 10 years. ... In delivering the sentence, Judge Boyd told the victims’ families … there was nothing she could do that would lessen their pain. And she told the teen that he, not his parents, is responsible for his actions. Judge Boyd said that she is familiar with programs available in the Texas juvenile justice system and is aware that he might not get the kind of intensive therapy in a state-run program that he could receive at the California facility suggested by his attorneys. Judge Boyd said she had sentenced other teens to state programs but they never actually got into those programs.” The Star-Telegram adds that the lawyer who represented the teen … said [he] could have been freed in two years if Judge Boyd had sentenced him to 20 years, but “She fashioned a sentence that could have him under the thumb of the justice system for the next 10 years” …by Cedric Hughes, Barrister & Solicitor with regular weekly contributions from Leslie McGuffin, LL.B.

Clark stirred up debate over her government’s promised referendum on Lower Mainland transit financing this week, suggesting voters will have the option of saying no to more fees and taxes. In a year-end interview with Black Press, Clark cautioned that Transportation Minister Todd Stone and Metro Vancouver mayors haven’t worked out the referendum question yet. But she has a specific description of the referendum that she promised repeatedly in the election last spring. “My expectation is generally that people will be able to choose amongst a number of options, one of which will be status quo,” Clark said. “But it’s not going to be a yes or no option. “There will be a number of options, so it will mean that people will need to do a little bit of homework, thinking about what they’d like to pay for and how they’d like to pay for it, or whether or not they’d like to just keep the status quo.” The NDP opposition jumped on apparent contradictions between Clark’s version of the referendum and those of Stone. Clark has indicated the province will be neutral as taxpayers vote, but Stone has said he will advocate for new financing for roads and transit. The referendum is contentious with Metro mayors, who face an election next November that may include the referendum. Metro Vancouver residents already pay a transit levy on their BC Hydro bills, extra fuel taxes and tolls on newer bridges, and proposals for car and parking taxes have ended some municipal careers.

Barry Russell Christiansen, 54, is scheduled to make a first court appearance on Jan. 21, 2014. On Dec. 3, 2012, just before 8 p.m., Nola Carlson and Shelley Lammers were jogging across 152 Street at 32 Avenue, when they were mowed down by a vehicle turning south. Lammers suffered a concussion, fractured ribs, a collapsed lung, two broken vertebrae and a lacerated liver. Carlson’s injuries included a broken nose and cheekbone. Evidence from the scene included traffic-camera video that captured the impact and – about 25 seconds later – a figure on foot approach the women and lean over them before rapidly departing. Three days later, police announced the arrest of a 53-year-old Surrey man and the seizure of a BMW X1. Early last month, investigators forwarded their report recommending charges. Surrey RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet said the charges are good news for the victims and their families. “While the assistance of the public was the key in advancing this investigation, several officers have worked tirelessly to ensure that charges were successfully laid.”

National SAM Award nominees announced CMHC makes its predictions for 2014 By Kerry Vital
As 2013 comes to a close, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation is looking to the year ahead. “This is an unprecedented time of low and stable interest rates,” says Carol Frketich, CMHC BC regional economist. She notes that she expects this trend to continue, keeping the Lower Mainland housing market strong. “Our ties with Asia bode well for our outlook,” says Frketich. “Currently the top four migration countries are China, India, the Philippines and Korea.” She also notes that businesses are increasingly investing in B.C., keeping the economy strong and bringing new jobs to the area in many sectors. She states that skilled workers are the second largest group of immigrants coming to British Columbia, with most settling in the Lower Mainland. First-time buyers are also expected to increasingly enter the market in the next few years, though in an older age bracket than in the past.
The Fraser Valley is becoming a market leader in home starts and sales, and the CMHC expects this to continue in 2014. However, unlike in Vancouver, single-family homes make up the bulk of the sales. “People still want land,” says CMHC Market Analyst Richard Sam. “Fiftyfive to 60 per cent of sales this year were single-family homes.” In contrast, the majority of sales in Vancouver were multi-family homes. “The benchmark for single-family homes is decreasing,” says Lance Jakubec, CMHC Senior Market Analyst. Sam also notes that Surrey has seen the largest increase in population growth in the Fraser Valley, followed by Abbotsford and Langley. The type of home isn’t expected to change in the new year though. “All markets are growing at a similar rate,” says Jakubec, naming condominiums, townhomes and single-family homes as the markets. “We see moderate increases in new construction in 2014,” he says. Living in the Lower Mainland has its benefits, and much of that is the reason behind growth in most cities. “Vancouver is consistently ranked as one of the most livable cities in the world,” says Neil Chrystal, president and CEO of Polygon Homes. “Buying conditions have never been better.”

Valley West drops two games to league leaders
AFTER GIVING the first-place team all they could handle for 120 minutes, the Valley West Hawks left Kelowna with little to show for it. The Hawks, the thirdplace team in the BC Hockey Major Midget League, were on the road for two games on the weekend hoping to creep closer to top spot. But when the weekend was over, Valley West had dropped two close games to the Okanagan Rockets, falling 5-4 Saturday night and 6-4 Sunday morning at the Capital News Centre. One short lapse Saturday might have cost the Hawks their best chance to earn some points on the trip. After Okanagan scored three times in four minutes to break a 1-1 tie and take a three-goal lead with three minutes to go in the second period, Matt Bradley of Surrey cut the difference to two goals before the second intermission, then completed his hat trick nine minutes into the third period. A minute later, Surrey’s Trevor Ayre netted a tying goal for the Hawks. The Rockets then frustrated the visitors by scoring the winning goal with 48 seconds to play. In Sunday’s game, the Hawks again battled the league’s first-place team for 60 minutes, only to finish with nothing to show for it despite another huge offensive effort from Bradley. The two teams traded goals 10 seconds apart midway through the first period, with Eric Callegari of Langley scoring the Valley West goal with an assist to Bradley. Bradley found the net six minutes into the second period, but his goal was sandwiched by two by the Rockets giving the home team a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes. By the midway point of the third period, the Hawks had surged into a 4-3 lead. Bradley tied the game 29 seconds into the final frame with his second goal of the game, then assisted on Cloverdal native Jordan Funk’s go-ahead goal five minutes later. Okanagan pulled even with 11 minutes to play, went up 5-4 on a shorthanded goal with seven minutes to go, then added a powerplay marker with five seconds left on the clock. The Hawks are now
eight points off the pace with a 15-8-1 (won-lost-
tied) record, but still lead the fourth-place Vancou-
ver Chiefs by five points. Valley West will host
the 8-13-3 South Island Royals for two games
next weekend, facing off at 7 p.m. Saturday and
11:15 a.m. at the Langley Events Centre.

Santa looking to swap outdated ride for super economy sleigh NORTH POLE - Driveway can exclusively reveal that Santa Claus has been visiting local dealerships kicking tires—ahem, rails—in his search for a new ride. Ever conscious of the increasing cost of gas and effect his multi-million-kilometre Christmas flight has on the environment, Santa seems to have opted for 2014 Ford Transit Connect Wagon for his next sleigh. The wagon promises a fuel economy of 7.84 L/100 kms fuel economy, which means the sleigh will be kinder to the environment than his current means of transporting gifts to the world’s children. As an added benefit, the EcoBoost engine – which is finely tuned for high-speed performance – would offer speeds much faster than Santa ever travelled in his former 36-hoofpowered sleigh. The expected upgrade comes as a record number of children earn spots on the “nice” list, increasing the payload weight of his bag of gifts beyond the normal tow rating of his nine-reindeer team. Santa told me that changing his mode of transportation will not compromise his ability to remain true to his mission. “My goal is and always has been
giving presents to good the nine reindeer look girls and boys, and a new forward to some time sleigh will make that off. Every year, the process more effective,” flying animals travel he says. “Let’s face it, 200,194,557 kms and every year there are more they’d like some time to children who earn presrest, he says, explaining ents. Reindeer spokesperson Dasher says The child observation mirror would

allow him to keep a close eye on his gifts in the second and third row. From its 60/40 three-passenger second-row bench seat through fold-flat second- and third-row seating with third-row independent fore-and-aft sliding capability, the wagon quickly adapts to accommodate multiple combinations of elves and presents. The MyKey programmable ignition key restricts maximum speed should a mischievous elf get behind the wheel while Claus is down a chimney leaving gifts. With eight cupholders, Claus and his elves would have plenty of space to take along a few glasses of milk as they continue through their busy night. Rain-sensing wipers would keep Claus on the move, as there’s always a chance he’ll encounter nasty weather. “As always, we are busy making toys and checking long lists,” says Santa. “That said, Merry Christmas to all!” Of course, Mrs. Claus will have the final say on this purchase because, as any dealership owner will tell you, women make the final decision in 80 per cent of new vehicle purchases. Keep your eyes peeled Tuesday night to see if Santa got his Christmas wish. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Even though we have high fuel prices in Canada, the trend is away from small fuel-efficient cars to larger vehicles.
Zack Spencer
’’
Subcompact and even compact sales are down but sales of small SUVs and even mid-sized vehicles are up. There are a couple of things at play here. The first is the stronger (not so much in the last two months) Canadian dollar over the last several years has allowed carmakers to jam more content into their cars and often the retail price has dropped too. The second is that vehicles are becoming more fuel efficient, so buying a slightly bigger car isn’t much of a hardship. With this as a backdrop, it is interesting to see that Mitsubishi has introduced a three-cylinder fuel saving car at the smallest end of the market.
Looks The Mirage is sold in two trim levels; the base starts at $12,498 and comes pretty sparsely equipped. It’s a small car with a little price tag. The much bigger Nissan Versa is cheaper at $11,898 and has buckets more power. The car that most people will choose is the Mirage SE with many more goodies but the price jumps dramatically to $15,398 and with the automatic transmission it lands at $16,598. At this price, there are plenty of options in the subcompact class. Styling is not what I would car eye-catching. Cars like the Ford Fiesta or the Kia Rio have much more appeal and features for similar money to this SE Mirage.
Inside On the plus side, the Mirage SE does come nicely equipped. The front driver’s seat has adjustment and both front seats have very good seat heaters that bring your backside up to the appropriate temperature in short order. The centre cluster is nicely finished and it features Bluetooth with streaming audio. There is an auxiliary jack but no USB jack to charge your phone. The back seat is small and the rear cargo area is what one might expect from a little car. But this vehicle does not live in a vacuum. The Kia Rio, with more features, like satellite radio, is only a $1,000 more and is way up on space and horsepower. The Nissan Versa Note is massive in comparison and for $1,700 more has push button start and even a backup camera. So yes, the Mirage is nicely equipped and has a good price but

Drive What this little car was designed to do is deliver impressive fuel economy. This is achieved by placing a 3-cylinder engine under the hood and matching it to either a 5-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable transmission (CVT). With just 74hp, this car is way down on power compared to the rest of the subcompact set, even the Fiat 500 has 101hp and the Nissan Versa has 109hp. This combination of small packaging and small engine deliver a rating of 5.3L/100km in the city and 4.4L on the highway. In my mostly city driving I was achieving 7L/100km. The problem with such a small engine is that t often needs to be pushed hard to accelerate and pass other traffic. The engine and CVT are loud, especially when the car is cold. The steering is very light for easy maneuverability but at higher speeds it feels too vague. This car is happy cruising because the engine settles down to a lower RPM and the noise level drops. Ask this car to perform and it’s an experience filled with noise and vibration.

Verdict With a very low starting price and potentially good fuel economy the basic Mirage has a place for a buyer who wants a basic runabout that sips gas but if the trend away from small cars is any indication, that will be a small number.

Block Can there be anything much more frustrating than not being able to turn because some twit is blocking the intersection? There is a provincial law that forbids drivers from entering an intersection if they can’t exit the other side (not for left turners, that’s ok). But many municipalities have taken that a step further with bylaws that apply that rule to all intersections, not just those controlled by lights. However, it seems to be largely ignored by people who block the entrance to neighbourhood streets while waiting for a light change ahead. Whether it’s a by law or not surely it’s just common sense and courtesy.

With great sadness, we announce the passing of Noreen Mary Stewart, who died peacefully at age 67. She left this world surrounded by close friends, on the evening of Tuesday, December 10, 2013. Noreen was born March 7, 1946 in Edmonton, Alberta and had made White Rock her special home. She is survived by her sister Bonnie Smyrski, brother-in-law Brian Smyrski and nephew Stewart Smyrski of Penticton, B.C., nieces Nicole Cowle and Cassidy Smyrski of Langley, B.C., her sister-in-law Brenda Taylor of Surrey, BC and nephew Tim Stewart of Toronto, Ontario. She’s also survived by her treasured kitties, Moops and Jazz-Purr. Noreen saved and cared for many dogs and cats throughout her generous life. Noreen (aka “Wing”) was our beautiful Angel. She was intelligent, engaging, unselfish, wickedly funny and divinely sweet. To have known her a little was a delight. To have known her well, a treasure beyond reckoning. And so now, for many of us, a loss beyond measure. Many thanks to the doctors and nursing staff at Peace Arch Hospital ICU and Burnaby Hospital ICU, and to her family and friends for their love and support.
