Bomb threat shuts down Cranbrook courthouse 11th Avenue closed in Cranbrook because of a bomb threat Thursday morning, believed to be a hoax

S A L LY M AC D O N A L D Townsman Staff

Parts of Cranbrook’s downtown were closed off Thursday morning, Dec. 19, because of a bomb threat

called into the court house. Cranbrook RCMP was notified at 9:20 a.m. Thursday by BC Sheriffs of a bomb threat that had been received by one of the court

clerks. The voice message was left shortly after 9 a.m. and retrieved by the clerk as she began her workday. The Sheriffs and RCMP evacuated the courthouse.

A male subject was identified very early on in the investigation and has been arrested. The subject has advised police the call was a hoax and a search of the

courthouse found no threats. A 35-year-old male from Cranbrook is in custody facing charges of public mischief. The investigation is

currently in the early stages and updates will be posted as they become available. The courthouse had reopened by 11 a.m. Thursday.

HAPPY 102ND BIRTHDAY: Alice Cullum turned 102 on Dec. 19 and celebrated at Joseph’s Creek Care Village with friends, family and staff. Alice was born in Walden, Sask. in 1911. During the depression years, she and her sister supported her mother, father and two brothers by working as hair stylists. At age 28 she married Matt Cullum and raised their two sons. It was in 1988 that she moved to Cranbrook with her son Gary and his wife Sue. An avid curler and bridge player, Alice earned her Master’s 100 level points in bridge in 1961. She continued to play until age 99. Her family is no stranger to longevity, as Alice’s mother lived to be 101.

School District 5 and B.C. education support staff have signed a collective agreement just in time for the Christmas vacation. The Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 4165 and the School District 5 board have come to an agreement for a 3.5 per cent wage increase and other labour arrangements this week. CUPE represents education assistants, clerical staff, trades, aboriginal workers, youth and family workers, custodians and bus drivers. The finalized agreement was narrowly voted in by CUPE members. A tentative deal made on Dec. 8 was defeated by the membership, said CUPE national representative Keith Nielson. “Then, this past week, we went back to the table, negotiated a little more and felt we had enough of a settlement to take back to our membership who voted on Tuesday and Wednesday,” said Nielson. The collective agreement, which runs until June 30, 2014, was ratified with 60 per cent of Local 4165 members in favour. “60 per cent acceptance isn’t a high acceptance rate. 40 per cent of the membership are still unhappy,” said Nielson. “A lot of our members weren’t happy with what came out of the provincial framework but chose to accept it.” In September, CUPE negotiations with the B.C. government through the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association brought about a 3.5 per cent wage increase between July 2013 and May 2014. “Along with that provincial framework, the members vote on what’s happened at the local table and the provincial framework at one time,” said Nielson.

A group of Grade 8 students has been selling baked goods at Laurie Middle School for the past six weeks to raise money for Street Angel. “Our whole entire class decided on this,” said Leaha Thomson. “We decided it was a really good idea to help.” Each Thursday, the students bring in baked goods from home to sell to their schoolmates. Dec. 19 was the final day of the fundraiser, which has raised more than $200. Teacher Jayme Farnan said the students were inspired by motivational speaker and YouTube sensation Kid President to help the less fortunate. Run by the Ktunaxa Nation, Operation Street Angel has a drop-in centre on 14th Avenue North which provides services to Cranbrook’s homeless population.

CUPE strikes deal with School District Continued from page 1 The local agreement includes opportunities for educational assistants to move around within the first month of the school year. “That was an important issue that has been on bargaining tables for the past few years. Our members are

pleased with that,” said Nielson. The CUPE Local 4165 was on strike alert before reaching the agreement. “If the vote would have been defeated again, we would be looking at strike action in January. That would

have been the next step for the Local to take,” said Nielson. School District 5 board chair Frank Lento is relieved it didn’t come to that. “We are absolutely thrilled there won’t be a labour dispute that would impact our com-

munities and our kids and families,” said Lento. Lento said he was impressed by the hard work put in by both sides at the bargaining table in the past weeks. The school district has been placed in a difficult position by the

approval,” he said. But it is a wage increase CUPE staff deserve, he added. “We know that our CUPE members, each and every one of them, deserve a fair wage increase,” said Lento. “If our teachers in the districts are the

CUPE wage increase Lento said was imposed by the province. “We were forced with a 3.5 per cent increase that the province negotiated. We were obligated to come up with a savings plan, which we have submitted to the ministry for their

heart of our schools, then our CUPE members are the soul. They are the unsung heroes. The board cares about them, and each and every one of them, they all take their job seriously and they really care about their communities.”

Alberta incentives attracting health professionals from East Kootenay Arne Petryshen Townsman Staff

Should Cranbrook be offering incentives to help attract and retain ultrasound technologists in the area? A letter included in the Dec. 9 agenda package from Interior Health’s director of diagnostic imaging for the Kootenays asked council to consider the idea. Thalia Vesterback wrote that Interior Health has been struggling to keep the sonographers at East Kootenay Regional Hospital for several years now. “IH is supplementing ultrasound service with external contractors, but this is not an ideal longterm solution,” she wrote. “We need permanent sonographers working and living in the community.” Vesterback wrote that there is currently a world-wide shortage of sonographers, so countries and provinces are having to compete for the limited number of graduates from accredited schools, of which B.C. has less than the projected need. “Given the success of community support to recruit other healthcare professionals in other locations, we’re hopeful Cranbrook council or some community groups may be interested in providing some form of recruitment and/or retention support for sonographers,” she wrote. Mayor Wayne Stetski discussed the problem with Vesterback, saying

it is serious. “I was comfortable giving her materials that can help sell the area and sell the city. There are a lot of things that make this an attractive city,” he said, adding that anything further would have to come through council. “There are some communities that have provided housing,” he said, as some communities provide housing for doctors. Cross had a few ideas. “It’s really tough. They would have to be long-term suggestions,” Cross said. “One was that if the college was ever to expand its residences, there could perhaps be a pod that could be made available.” Stetski said Vesterback is also interested in working with community groups. In Calgary, for instance, there is a $30,000 signing bonus. Alberta also pays significantly more for the position. “The sonographers that we’re training often choose Alberta just because of the better money they get paid,” Stetski said. Cross said the area has many things to offer, and maybe more promotion is the answer, at least in the short term. She said she had a sonographer student from Victoria stay with her, who then decided she wanted to stay here. Stetski said community groups with ideas are welcome to come forward.

Suspects at large after Cranbrook home invasion RCMP

On December 18, shortly after 9 p.m., the RCMP communications centre received an abandoned 911 call from a residence on 1st Avenue South in Cranbrook. Nothing was heard on call back so officers were dispatched to the house to check. Once on scene they learned there had been a home invasion by two males and female wearing masking and involving firearms. Three people were in the residence when they heard a knock at the door. One answered it and two males barged in, both carrying firearms. The occupant got into a brief physical confrontation with one male in an attempt to direct the gun muzzle away. A 911 call was made by another occupant who heard the altercation, prior to being directed by the males into another room.

daily townsman

The invaders quickly realized the person they were looking for was not there. They demanded cash and anything else of value from the occupants. The subjects fled with several electronic devices and a snowboard. The suspects are described as follows: • Male — 5 feet, 11 inches, very slim, wearing all black including gloves and balaclava; • Male — 5 feet, 7 inches, very slim, pale complexion, wearing a half mask bandana and all black clothing; • Female — short, dark complexion, half mask bandana and all black clothing. The investigation is ongoing. If anybody had information about this crime, please contact the Cranbrook RCMP at 250-489-3471 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

A man who passed through Cranbrook in October on his way to setting a record and walking the length of the Trans Canada Trail has achieved his goal. On Tuesday, Dec. 17, Dana Meise dipped his toes in the Pacific Ocean, more than five years after he began his journey at the Atlantic Ocean on Cape Spear, Newfoundland. The 39-year-old forest tech from Prince George stepped off the end of the Trans Canada Trail at Clover Point, Victoria and into the history books as the first person to walk the length of the trail across Canada. At 16,000 kilometres, the meandering Trans Canada Trail passes through 800 communities and is the longest trail in the world. Meise and his 50pound backpack passed through Cranbrook in October. He has walked almost every day since then, through deep snowpack, blizzards, rain and wind to achieve his goal. He was joined by dozens of supporters and trail enthusiasts on Tuesday who joined him for the final six-kilometre stretch. “I DID IT!” Meise wrote Tuesday on his Facebook page, The Great Hike. “At noon today I set a world record for the longest hiking trip on the world’s longest trail, the Trans Canada Trail. “Thank you all again. I’m still in shock. Next year I set another record as I’m off to the Arctic Ocean.” Need help with current events?

Let’s keep Herod in Christmas

T

here’s a part of the Christmas story as Matthew tells it that I bet you don’t know about. Matthew’s gospel includes the arrival of the “three kings,” astrologers from the east who have come to inquire where they might find “the child who has been born king of the Jews.” So far so good. We’re used to seeing those three foreigners. But then the story continues with Herod’s response to their inquiry. Herod was the puppet ruler over Israel, installed by Rome to manage Roman affairs. King Herod was like Joseph Stalin. He executed his favourite wife, his brother–in–law, and three of his sons because he thought they wanted his crown. A proverb of the time said, “It was safer to be Herod’s dog than his son.” Herod was so threatened by the possibility of an infant king that he ordered all boys under two years to be killed. It is called the “Massacre of the Innocents”. We commemorate it on December 28 every year. You can find the story in Matthew 2. What a horrific story. Why does Matthew include such a horrific story? Why is it here? Thirty–two years ago, I was a new minister in a small town in northwestern Ontario. It was my very first Christmas as a minister. I decided that the service would be perfect. In the cold darkness of early evening, the sidewalk glittered with luminaria, candles inside bags, shining with a magical glow. A young girl played “What Child Is This” on the flute. Three generations—a grandmother, her daughter, and granddaughter—lit the Advent candles. We sang the carols “O Come, All Ye Faithful,” “Away in a Manger,” and “O Little Town of Bethlehem.” We read the story—Mary, Joseph,

the baby, and the manger. I remember thinking how wonderful it all was. The service was as perfect as I imagined it would be. That’s when George’s beeper went off. He was a member of the volunteer fire department. He ran out of the sanctuary. As we started singing “Silent Night”, George ran back in shouting that Bob’s mother’s house was on fire. jumped up and ran Rev. Yme outBob with George. People had Woensdregt to choose between listening to my sermon or slipping out to help. George’s wife got up and left. Others started slipping out. By the time Mary and Joseph reached Bethlehem, the church was mostly empty. That’s not how Christmas Eve services are supposed to turn out. Tragedies should wait until January. How dare this happen now and destroy this moment of peace and joy? King Herod doesn’t fit the Christmas story. This horrifying massacre doesn’t belong. No nativity sets include a plastic King Herod. You won’t find any cards featuring Herod. He’s not part of any Christmas pageant I’ve ever seen. We don’t sing about this in our Christmas carols—although there is one, called the Coventry Carol. But isn’t this how life works? Joy and pain are intermingled. Peace and disruption exist together. This part of the story may not seem to fit—but we need to hear it. Like a lot of stories, we have to hear the whole story or we get the story wrong. Every true story admits that even in the midst of blinking decorations and flickering candles, darkness threatens the light. If we try to ignore the darkness, we will ignore reality. We can’t take the hardship of

the real world out of the Christmas story. The reality is that in the midst of a festival of buying and decorating and baking, there are way too many people who are on the outside looking in … and we cannot ignore them. They are brothers and sisters to us. Matthew reminds us that Christmas came in the days of King Herod. The angels came to Joseph. They did not speak in soft, reassuring tones. In Joseph’s dream, they shouted: “Wake up! Hurry! Run!” The family escaped to Egypt. They were far from home, but the baby was safe. Tragically, not everyone was safe. Herod’s order was the death of every infant boy in Bethlehem. The part of this story that we’re used to leaving out—the sadness, suffering, and death—is most important. It’s the hard part that explains why this child is a holy child. When we remember the story, we need to remember all of the story. It’s not all sweetness and light. Rather, the story is that God comes to the worst places and the most painful circumstances to share our suffering, to care for us in the midst of tragedy. Christ has come to bear our sorrows. We have not been left alone. This holy season is the promise that God’s joy is deeper than our sadness, that ultimately life is more powerful than death, and that the light shines even in the darkness. In your celebration this year, remember those who struggle with a life which is not pretty, not peaceful, not filled with joy and warmth. Remember them … and become part of God’s light in their lives. Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook

Kootenay Ice wrap up first half of WHL season TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor

With the first half of the WHL season in the books, the Kootenay Ice have compiled a 18-162-1 record in 37 games played. Players will head home for a nine-day break before returning to action on Dec. 27th against the Spokane Chiefs, a game that will honour Cranbrook Hockey Hall of Famer Scott Niedermayer. Following are some observations on how the team has handled themselves so far. Best is yet to come I’m convinced that we have yet to see the best from this team. The Ice have had a better first half than last year, but the second half is where the cream will rise to the top. Last season, the Ice climbed out of the Eastern Conference basement with a 25-12-1-0 record in the second half, and combined with a massive collapse from the Lethbridge Hurricanes, was able to secure its 15th consecutive play-

ternational tournaments. Reinhart is versatile, and can play both centre or on the wing, an asset that head coach Brent Sutter will consider when he digs out the scalpel and cuts only three players from a 25-man selection camp roster.

off spot. Over the Christmas break, players will get a chance to see family and friends while recharging and refocusing in order to make that playoff push. Ice home attendance Attendance numbers are down this year during home games at Western Financial Place, a trend that has continued over the last few years. Tuesday’s matchup against Lethbridge, which featured Cranbrook native Brad Lukowich on the ‘Canes bench, drew the lowest crowd in franchise history at 1,934. A few other games over the season have drawn less than 2,000 attendees as well. The highest number was School Spirit Night on Nov. 8th that drew 2,909 bodies in a 3-0 loss to the Rebels. Dealing with injuries Players and coaches don’t like using injuries as an excuse for anything, however, the team has had to play with a short bench as of late. Kootenay is missing the

Kootenay celebrates a goal during a game on home ice in September. services of Ryan Chynoweth, Tanner Faith, Rinat Valiev and Jagger Dirk. That’s one forward and three defencemen currently missing from the lineup. Faith has had an especially rough go of it this season, missing 21 outings with an upper body injury before returning for three games and reinjuring himself. Earlier in the year, Kootenay also missed Kyle O’Connor for 12 games and Mackenzie Skapski for eight outings, both with lower body injuries. Nobody ever uses injuries as an excuse for inconsistent play, but missing guys like Dirk, Faith and Valiev does make an impact, especially on the back end.

yet to come over from Russia, and the infusion of youth. Bozon, a signed 2012 third-round draft pick of the Montreal Canadiens, struggled a bit when he arrived, going pointless in seven games alongside Sam Reinhart and Jaedon Descheneau, however, he has since scored eight goals and collected 15 assists. Along with the departure of Shirley and Thomas, off-season pickup Clint Filbrandt and returning vet Jordyn Boyd were reassigned to Jr. A while Jeff Hubic was recently shipped to Tri-City. The WHL has a trade moratorium in place during the Christmas break, which ends on Dec. 27 in advance of the final trade deadline on Jan. 10th.

New Faces Kootenay picked up some new bodies earlier in the season with the acquisition of Tim Bozon and Landon Cross from Kamloops in exchange for Collin Shirley, Matt Thomas and draft picks. Cross immediately stepped into a stabilizing role on defence, which was looking a little thin due to Faith’s injury, Valiev’s absence, who had

Reinforcements en route With injuries and the absence of Sam Reinhart with Team Canada at the World Junior Championship in Sweden and Troy Murray at the U17 World Hockey Challenge in Nova Scotia, Kootenay has recalled two 1997born prospects from Midget AAA teams. Dylan Overdyk, a second-rounder, and Austin

Wellsby, a fourth rounder in the in last year’s WHL bantam draft, will join the team when they return for action on Dec. 27th. Overdyk, a defenceman, is currently with the Edmonton Maple Leafs in the AMHL, while Wellsby, a forward, suits up for the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds of the BCMML. World Junior Championships Sam Reinhart is currently in Europe trying out for Team Canada and make no mistake— when the final roster is submitted to the IIHF on Christmas Day, he will be on it. Reinhart, the Ice captain and top scorer, is in his draft year after two seasons of hype from armchair and professional scouts waiting for him become eligible. He has 16 goals and 34 assists so far this season, and sits in seventh place in the WHL scoring race, tied with Mike Aviani of the Spokane Chiefs at 50 points. Reinhart has been paired up with OHL phenom Connor McDavid during Team Canada practices, as the two have played with each other before at in-

Eastern Conference parity It’s a tight playoff race in the Eastern Conference, with 13 points separating first place from ninth place. The Calgary Hitmen, at 49 points, reign at the top, while Red Deer, tied with Prince Albert at 36 points, sits in the final playoff position. Even those on the outside looking in, such as Saskatoon and Lethbridge, have proven to be dangerous teams and beaten the Ice in their home barn. Kootenay has struggled with consistency in the first half, their longest win streak being three games, and their longest losing skid being the same number. In talking with players, seesawing from win to loss has certainly been frustrating, and we’ll see how the team responds in the second half of the year. Western Conference dominance As per the last three years, the Portland Winterhawks have continued to dominate the Western Conference standings. Despite graduating players like Sven Baertchi, Ty Rattie, Tyler Wotherspoon and Mac Carruth over those years, the Winterhawks have remained strong with guys like Brendan Leipsic, Oliver Bjorkstrand, Chase De Leo, Nic Petan and Derrick Pouliot. After winning the WHL championship last year, they also gradu-

ated interim head coach Travis Green to the AHL with the Utica Comets. Green ran the show while stepping in the place of bench boss Mike Johnston, who was suspended for the entire season by the WHL for alleged player benefit violations. In addition to the Winterhawks, the Kelowna Rockets are having a very strong season with Cranbrook-born Ryan Huska at the helm, going 28-30-2. After multiple seasons of mediocrity, the Everett Silvertips are also chasing the top spot in the conference, while the Spokane Chiefs are doing well with overager Mitch Holmberg tearing up the scoresheets and leading the WHL scoring race. Rookies baptized by fire Kootenay has some new blood on the roster with the addition of Jordan Steenbergen, Troy Murray, Matt Alfaro, Hudson Elynuik and Zak Zborosky who stuck around after training camp cuts in September. Steenbergen has been the odd-man out most of the time, but has played more recently due to injuries and has also done stints up front as a winger on the fourth line. Alfaro, Elynuik and Zborosky haven’t missed many games at all, as the latter leads the squad in the rookie scoring race with five goals and nine assists. Troy Murray has been very impressive in his WHL debut, and seems to be getting better each and every game. It’s not fair to compare him to his older brother Ryan, a former standout with the Everett Silvertips who is now full-time in the NHL with the Columbus Blue Jackets, but he is playing well and has sat out only once.

Beltran, Yankees finalize $45 million, 3-year contract

Page 9

Associated Press

NEW YORK - Outfielder Carlos Beltran and the New York Yankees have finalized a $45 million, three-year contract. The agreement, reached Dec. 6, was announced by the team Thursday. The eighttime All-Star is to be introduced at a Yankee Stadium news conference Friday. The 36-year-old played for the Mets from 2005-11, when he was dealt to San Francisco. He signed a $26 million, two-year contract with St. Louis before the 2012 season and reached the World Series for the first time this year. Slowed by knee injuries, Beltran has retained a potent bat - especially in October. He hit .296 with 24 homers and 84 RBIs for the Cardinals this year and added two homers and 15 RBIs in the post-season. Beltran injured ribs in the World Series opener when he banged into Fenway Park’s rightfight fence while robbing Boston’s David Ortiz of a grand slam.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. - Kobe Bryant is expected to miss about six weeks with an injured left knee. The Lakers said Thursday that an MRI showed Bryant has a fracture of the lateral tibial plateau of his knee. The team said Bryant had hyperextended the knee in Tuesday night’s game at Memphis. The injury is the latest setback for the Lakers star, who had only returned to the court on Dec. 8 after nearly eight months away because of a torn Achilles tendon. Los Angeles had signed the fourth-leading scoring in NBA history to a two-year contract extension last month.

Fees persuade most smart meter holdouts Tom Fletcher Black Press

BC Hydro’s imposition of manual meter reading fees has persuaded most holdouts to accept a wireless smart meter. BC Hydro imposed a $35 monthly fee starting

Dec. 1 for customers who refuse to part with their mechanical electricity meters, after offering the 68,000 customers who still had them the option of accepting the new meter with the radio transmission function on or off.

BC Hydro reported the results this week to the B.C. Utilities Commission (BCUC), which is reviewing the fees. More than 48,000 customers chose the smart meter to avoid the meter reading fee. Another 450 chose the radio-off

meter, which comes with a $100 setup fee and $20 a month starting April 1 to cover costs of collecting readings. Another 6,270 customers chose to keep their mechanical meters, and 13,110 more did not respond to BC

Hydro’s letters, so they will have the $35 fee added to their bills until they choose another option. BC Hydro reports that 99 per cent of its customers now have the wireless meter. Most of those have been switched to automated billing, and have their daily electricity use displayed on their online account pages. Claims of health ef-

The Trans Canada Trail Foundation plans to close gaps in the cross-country corridor in time for Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017 — including significant portions through the Kootenays. Jim Bishop, a director and former chair of the foundation, told the Regional District of Central Kootenay last week they are still trying to figure out where the trail should go. “Some key decisions have to be made, not within the confines of just this regional district but others on the east and west,” he said. “So it’s important to work in tandem and put the trail

where locals want it.” Bishop explained about 17,000 kilometres of the trail is useable, leaving another 6,000 km to be completed. In B.C., about 750 km remains outstanding, mostly in the Kootenays, including the stretch between Castlegar and Nelson. One alternative is to go via Salmo, and the other along the Kootenay River. Other question marks include where and how the trail will cross Kootenay Lake — Bishop said it may involve a designated boat launch — and whether it will connect the East and West Kootenays via the Gray Creek Pass, as proposed. “I can’t speak on behalf of the East Kootenay people because they’re wrestling with it,” Bishop said. “But it will be

solved. We’re hell bent on being connected by 2017.” He added the foundation is trying to raise $150 million to finish the entire trail — half public money and half private — of which about $90 million would be for actual construction, $30 million for ongoing maintenance, and another $30 million for publicity and other purposes. “We’re trying to build enthusiasm to make this an iconic project,” he said, noting it will be the world’s longest recreational trail, and one of the largest volunteer operations ever undertaken, involving over 400 groups. 2017 also marks the 25th anniversary of the Trans-Canada Trail’s establishment.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Others will note that they ran into an unstoppable force when they get a glimpse of you and your attitude today. Remain confident, but don’t hesitate to walk away from complications that are of no interest to you. Tonight: Be spontaneous. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Listen to your instincts, and acknowledge them as well. How you handle a situation could change unexpectedly. Plans involving a holiday happening might be tossed out at the last minute, which will throw several people off. Tonight: Do what you must first. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Use your high energy to complete what must be done before the holidays. The whirlwind of festivities will start this coming weekend. Try to free up one area of your life. Tonight: Get together with friends; perhaps you will decide to start swapping gifts. CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Your creativity will emerge. Rethink the rest of your purchases, and make adjustments while you can. Get into the spirit of Christmas, and let go of your gift-giving concerns. Focus on your values; use them to gain a new perspective. Tonight: Treat a friend to drinks and munchies. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You attract people who have a similar energy. A friend might shake up the status quo. Enjoy the excitement, but avoid being controlling -- it won’t help. Make adjustments for this person. Tonight: The world is your oyster. Finish up your errands. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Much information comes in that you need to consider. In order to free up some time, you will want to rearrange your schedule. A loved one could be difficult when he or she discovers that plans might need to be adjusted. Tonight: Head home. Be with family. Make peace. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Your friends, associates and family might become childlike at the thought of Christmas.

Tundra

You will want to visit with many people before the actual holiday. Start now. You might be quite pleased at the amount of holiday cheer around you. Tonight: Get together with friends. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Pressure comes in once more from a boss or someone else you need to answer to. You might want to avoid an issue, but any attempt to ward off a discussion could be seen as manipulation. Face the inevitable, and get past this problem. Tonight: Burn the midnight oil. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Make plans to see a Christmas pageant during the weekend. Break out of your routine and enjoy some music or dancing. If you can, take off for a day and get involved in some kind of winter sport. Tonight: Make sure you’ve mailed all your packages before you meet a friend. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) A loved one or special friend might approach you and offer much more of what you want and desire. The two of you often

disengage from stress when you’re together. Catch up on each other’s news. Tonight: Continue the theme of deferring. Let someone else choose. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Schedule some time with friends and loved ones. Someone might go out on a limb for you. Be gracious, and avoid taking him or her for granted. This individual not only loves you, but he or she will do whatever it takes to make your life easier. Tonight: Make merry. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) People seem to show up and want to have a quality conversation with you. You are aware of how much is on your plate, so make it a point to honor your limitations and say “no” if need be. A meeting provides a lot of food for thought. Tonight: Head home early. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: After many years of using smokeless tobacco, I’d like to quit. Are there any effective measures one can take to beat this highly addictive habit? I use the kind of tobacco that comes in a can, and it goes wherever I go. It wakes me up in the morning demanding attention. I believe it is partially responsible for my high blood pressure. My dentist has concerns for my teeth and gums. I mentioned my tobacco use to my doctor, but he couldn’t give me a response that would be an effective way to quit. I see commercials on TV for a drug that helps smokers, but I don’t know whether it would be helpful for those of us who dip. I, and the many others with this problem, would appreciate any advice. -- Not a Baseball Player Dear Not: Smokeless tobacco is also called chew, snuff, spit and oral tobacco, but it still can cause cancer, just like cigarettes, along with other health problems such as tooth loss and gum disease. While some nicotine replacement therapy (patches, lozenges, sprays) can be helpful, not all work for smokeless tobacco. Some people prefer alternative medicine (hypnosis, acupuncture, herbal treatments, etc.), although studies are inconclusive as to its effectiveness. The American Cancer Society offers a Guide to Quitting Smokeless Tobacco on its website (cancer.org) and assistance by phone at 1-800-227-2345. Here are additional resources: Nicotine Anonymous (nicotine-anonymous.org) at 1-877-879-6422; Kill the Can (killthecan.org); the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (cdc. gov/tobacco) at 1-800-QUIT-NOW, and the National Cancer Institute (cancer.gov) at 1-800-4-CANCER, or smokefree.gov at 1-877-448-7848. Good luck. Dear Annie: I recently lost my driving privileges and have been getting a ride from a co-worker twice a week. I am right on her way to the office, so it’s not at all out of her way. This co-worker recently blindsided me with a demand to pay her gas money. I don’t feel I should pay her, because she already drives there. Do you think I should pay? How much? I already pay another person to take me to and from work on the other three days because it is definitely out of the way for him. I can’t afford to pay a second person. I work the third shift and am the main provider for my family of five. -- Broke in Ohio Dear Broke: Anyone who picks you up regularly deserves to be given something for gas and wear-and-tear on the car. She is doing you a favor, and it’s starting to cause some resentment, which means she could stop offering you a lift and you’d have to make other arrangements. You do not have to offer her as much as the co-worker who must travel a greater distance, but perhaps you could fill up the tank once in a while. Ask her what she thinks is fair, tell her what you can afford, and try to work out a compromise. Dear Annie: I had tears in my eyes reading the letter from “Lonely in California.” It was a sad and depressing life taking care of young children while my husband would rather be drinking with his buddies. Over the years, I saw a couple of divorce lawyers, but I was afraid to be on my own. And my husband made it clear that I could leave, but not with the kids. So I stayed in this miserable mess. This summer, after he got completely wasted every day, my worst nightmare happened. He was so drunk that he didn’t realize he was sexually assaulting our 7-year-old daughter. I got a restraining order, filed for divorce and am now on my own. It’s scary, but I have so much peace in my heart. I still feel like a failure as a mother for allowing my kids to live with this man, but I know I will get past this, and in the end, leaving will be worth it. -- Relieved in Massachusetts Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. December 20, 2008 Five years have come and gone, but you are in our hearts. We thought of you with love today, but that is nothing new. We thought about you yesterday, and days before that too. We think of you in silence, we often speak your name. Now all we have is memories, and your picture in a frame. Your memory is our keepsake, with which we’ll never part. God has you in His keeping, we have you in our heart. Love Janet & Family.

Born in Kimberly Nov 10, 1931 to Albert and Ethel Bureau. Attended Watkins School through Selkirk School. After graduation he took a job at the hardware store and Mark Creek store which later became the Hudson Bay Store. When he wasn’t working he loved to spend all his free time hunting and fishing in the Kootenays. In 1957 he move to Long Beach California and later married Joyce McMuldrick later they divorced. He worked in management at Sears Roebuck and retired after over twenty five years. To fulfill a lifelong dream he moved to Arroyo Grande and built a ranch where he could continue training Arabian Stallions and still be close to the beach. He grew restless and traveled throughout the United States and Canada, settling in Arizona for a number of years. Although he loved the southwest the beach called him back and he returned to Arroyo Grande.

He would then make his way to the seedy underbelly of London, and exchange his product for envelopes of cash.

The only difference between Kearney and the mules of today was his product. He wasn’t transporting drugs, weapons, or even stolen goods across Europe. He was smuggling books. One of these books went by the title “Candy,” which many knew as “the world’s most talked about book.” “Candy” was the brainchild of Beat writer Terry Southern and poet Mason Hoffenberg. Southern was interested

they disagreed on subject matter, both men completely agreed on who they felt should publish their work: Maurice Girodias. Girodias operated the Olympic Press in Paris; a firm well know for printing works other publishers wouldn’t touch. While this guaranteed a large backlist of salacious dreck, he also happened to publish “Tropic of Capricorn,” “The Ginger Man,” “Naked Lunch,” and most famously “Lolita.” Giordias published “Candy” in 1958. Bound in plain green boards with dull black writing, the book was part of the Olympic’s Traveller’s Companion series (an attempt to disguise what was basically a series of dirty books). Of course these clandestine measures never really worked, and “Candy” was banned in less than a week. Giordias, however, was quite used to this, and rereleased the book under the title “Lollipop.” This was banned in less than a day. As the French authorities were confiscating and destroying as many copies of both books they could find, Giordias released a third printing of the book, back under the title “Candy.” For export, a much sanitized and therefore thinner edition was printed for the British book market. This again was a complete ruse meant to satisfy government censors while Giordias had runners (see above) flood the market with the real thing. Much like today’s “50 Shades of Grey,” “Candy” was a book everyone was talking about. Giordias knew his real market would be North America, where he wouldn’t run into any censorship prob-

lems. Unfortunately, he was too late. A pirated edition had already appeared in the States, and was selling in the millions. It was soon reviewed in every major publication, and rose to the New York Times Top Ten List, all without the authors and publisher receiving any royalties for it. With the book’s copyright in question, Hollywood quickly became involved. Unlike the book however, the 1968 film “Candy” (starring Marlon Brando, Richard Burton, James Coburn, and Walter Matthau) was box-office poison. By the time the film was released, things had gone incredibly sideways for the creators of the novel. Giordias had scammed both Hoffenberg and Southern in their author contract which — when combined with the capital lost from the pirated editions — meant both authors were paid only 300 dollars for the whole affair. A convoluted myriad of lawsuits were filed, which only forced the authors to lose more money. Hoffenberg took all of this badly, sinking into booze and heroin addiction. The popularity of “Candy” in the States caused European countries to loosen their censorship laws — which quite ironically bankrupted Giordias (karma?), leaving him destitute. Southern only wrote one more book after “Candy,” but only because he was too busy writing screenplays. He penned “Dr. Strangelove,” “Casino Royale,” “Barbarella,” and “Easy Rider.” In 2006, a complete run of Olympic Press Books were sold at auction to Princeton University for just under $100,000. The seller? Patrick Kearney — the runner.

Some of the creations from the CDAC’s Introduction to Origami workshop.

AS GOOD AS

Due to a sell-out of the workshop in November, instructor Steve Bondy hosted another introduction to origami workshop Saturday, December 14, at the Cranbrook and District Arts Council (CDAC). People came from as far as Kimberley to participate and create, and to get to grips with this ancient paper folding art form. Steve’s workshops have been so successful at the arts council that he is already booked in for two intermediate classes for 2014. The first is Saturday, January 25, and the second is Saturday, February 22, both between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. For $25 you’ll receive all the materials you require and two hours of professional instruction. This course acts as follow-on from the introductory course, but is also suitable for people with previous origami experience. In this class Steve moves on from the simpler models from the introductory course to more complex models including an angel fish and, at special request of one of his younger students, a dragon! Terry Lynn Jeffers, director of administration for the Symphony of the Kootenays, took the workshop and paid it forward right away by sharing her newfound knowledge. “I took my origami pieces home and immediately spent over an hour having fun with my two granddaughters, teaching them what Steve taught us,” she says. “They were excited to discover how many fun things can be made with one pretty square of paper.” If you’d like to experience one of Steve Bondy’s classes, please register in advance to avoid disappointment. If you would like to request the introductory workshop run again, you can do so by calling 250-426-4223 or sending an e-quest to cdac@shaw.ca or via the workshop page on the CDAC website at: www. cranbrookanddistrictartscouncil.com.
